Good story but author focuses on all negative aspects of being Amish and nothing positive. She does not elaborate on several things she writes about. An example is its clear she does not like her dad but never really explains why. It leaves the reader wondering why she feels that way....was she abused mentally or physically? The book was an easy read and for the most part kept my interest.

This is a very interesting story. I really enjoy reading stories of people who leave the Amish. I'm always interested into why they chose the "English" world. This is a very good memoir of how this young woman made her choice and left everything she knew. It seems like her entire life, she kind of had an idea that she wasn't in the right place for her. She didn't quite fit in, so she left. I totally admire her courage to do so. The only thing I really didn't like about this book, was that it kind of left me hanging. I would have liked to hear more about her life outside the Amish and more about her adjustment to the outside world.

Excellent! An easy read and really wakes one up to the different ways of life people hand down.
Loved the whole book, really felt sorry for the young girl who suffered so.
What a brave soul she is.

...why people leave the Amish. I've been fascinated by the Amish ever since I first learned of them when I was young, & I've read many books about them. God bless Emma & I wish her every happiness. Thanks for sharing.

This book hooked me from the first page! I couldn't put it down literally until I finished it. The Amish life seems secretive and closed to us English, but Emma took us boldly and honestly into its innermost chambers. I admire her for her complete sincerity, especially with the sensitive handling of embarrassing moments in her life. I respect her for her courage to tell her story and wish her great success, peace, and joy as she travels down this new road she has chosen.

While I admire her courage in leaving the Amish, I think she wrote this book too soon. There needs to be more living before a memoir is written. As of the end of the book she is still in college. Her style of writing is not very interesting and I think it is because she is still lacking command of the English language. The book is filled with mistakes. Did no one edit for her?
On a positive note, she helps us understand why she left the Amish Swartzentrubers and how difficult it was to get away. I am thankful for people who reached out to help her. She had the good sense to know her own mind and to be determined to live the life she wanted for herself. I hope she achieves her goal and that we will hear more from her later when she has more to say and more experience in saying it.

Though some of it sounded like a girl just complaining about her upbringing, I can understand that to her it was a big deal. I think more explanation of some of the particulars would have helped validate her complaints to the lay reader. I can appreciate her efforts and wish her the best. I would consider this a fair, first try and I'm sure the next will be far better.
