A friend of mine recommended this series to me and at first I was skeptical. Turns out that
I got sucked in and have read almost all of the books. Anyone who enjoys a good fantasy
read will love these books. This is the first book in the series and it is a little bit of a slow
read at first but once you get into it you will not be able to put it down. I have definitely recommended
this book to multiple people and they have all really enjoyed it. Check it out.

Incredibly well-written and thoughtful. The characters and their story jumped off the pages with Salvatore's masterful writing.

I have wanted to begin this series for quite some time and I was not disappointed.

My first exposure to the realm of high fantasy novels was The Hobbit. I was in 6th grade. I started reading the Dragonlance series shortly after and probably read every published work at that time. After that I started reading science fiction books mostly by Asimov but I also read the Ender's game series. I am now in my thirties but wanted to start reading more fiction again. A few months ago I decided to read Lord of the Rings. Once I was done I wanted to read some more high fantasy but didn't know where to start. A friend recommended the Drizzt novels and I couldn't put them down. I read the first two in 3 days. Homeland is very much a bildungsroman, much like Ender's Game, but set in the world of the Drow elves. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of Lord of the Rings, Dragonlance, Ender's Game, etc...

This book offers a fascinating look into the twisted society where R.A. Salvatore's most beloved character was raised. You get to see how he was raised, how he was destined for more than that, and how he overcame the odds stacked up against him to become a morally good hero.

I wanted to read R.A. Salvatore because I somehow found out that his character Drizzt was an icon of fantasy stories and a fan favorite (I am kind of new to fantasy novels). I was not dissapointed at all. Salvatore's story telling is incredibly fluid and detailed enough to create the whole atmosphere, see the whole battles and even perceive the emotions. Now, my only problem (if you can call that a problem), is that I will have to read many more of his books.

Knowing that this was the first book in an ongoing series the hook got me pretty good. Character building was great. Looked forward to the next time I could read this book and instantly bought the second book upon finishing this one

When will they make this thing into a movie? That's what I keep asking myself all these years. I think Drizzt is a very likeable character. I fell in love with him and loved reading about all his struggles. That's what makes this book memorable for me.

I found this series of the "Dark Elf" when searching for my next book to read. They got great reviews from folks who enjoy this genre of books. Even though I started with Book 4 "The Crystal Shard". I decided to go back to the beginning of it all and am reading Book 1: Homeland: The Legend of Drizzt. Book 4 started off a bit slow for me and felt fragmented, initially. It did all come together and I thoroughly enjoyed it, but I needed to know more of the characters. Book 1 is wonderful, intriguing, keeps me on the edge of my seat and is indeed a bit dark. I am almost half way through and hate to put it down! While a bit different storyline than what I thought It might be, the Underworld is fascinating and almost comes to life with the author's written words. I LOVE IT! And would recommend this series to anyone who likes this type of book.

Worst part about the series is as it is with all good series, it eventually ends.

I finally decided to start reading the series of Forgotten Realms novels after meaning to for several years. I knew I wanted to start out with a Drizz't novel and figured starting with the book about his birth and escape from the drow would be a great place to start. All I can say is that if the rest of the FR books are only half as good as this one, I'm going to be doing some late night reading.

I can't wait to read the rest of this series, the Clerics Quintet, and the rest of the series based on the Drow written by Salvatore.

This Book and it's many counterparts are like old friends to me. They are wonderfully written, (story-wise) and are absolutely wonderful for young beginners of fantasy fiction. I began the series at eight years of age. to this day, (I'm 23) i still love to read them. I am currently buying the series now, each book is like meeting up with a long lost buddy. I would recommend these to anyone that is a fan of the genre.

I was interested in the imaginative underground world filled with stalactites, stalagmites and mushrooms. I actually wanted to live in this world. But Salvatore's writing is so juvenile. He completely takes out any mystery or sense of discovery by constantly telling us everything right up front rather than letting us discover through dialogue and action. I'm not a fan of books that switch between characters' perspectives constantly, especially from three different characters' POVs within the same paragraph.

I tried to imagine Salvatore was reading this story to me aloud, and that helped, but I wish the book had been better-written. Do we really need to be told a character laughed or smiled "evilly"? It's just so juvenile. But still, it's a fun read. I need a break from Salvatore before I try to read any more of his work, though.

It's an entertaining enough fantasy book. A nice introduction to the Underdark, the ugliness of Drow society and poor Drizzt, cursed with decency. Also, the description of the demonic orgy was surprinsingly tasteful.

My daughter calls these types of books mind candy because they are written for teenagers, but I enjoy them. The writer makes Drizzt and the characters he meets so real. Really fun reading. You want to know what happens to Drizzt.

This book cohesively combines timeless mythic tropes in a rich and narrative-serving setting. Delightfully fresh, relevant and distinct in it's unoriginality. I have rarely seen the story of the individual's struggle amidst a woefully broken system so well and memorably portrayed.

I read the Icewind Dale Trilogy before this book and I was glad I did so. This book was amazing. I thought the books of Icewind were good...this tore it up! I could not put this down. Starting book II immediately.

not so artsy
When I first heard about the existence of Drizzt Do'Urden, I knew only he was a dark elf and nothing else. Now that I have read his very first tale, chronologically, my impression on the character is of amazement and respect. Compelling and worth cheering for, Drizzt just earned another fan, and Salvatore, another reader.
