Vocabulary Cartoons: Word Power Made Easy

This book offers a much easier, funner, faster, and better way to learn and to *REMEMBER* vocabulary than most other vocabulary books (including those by Kaplan, Princeton Review, *for Dummies, Arco, and Barrons). What makes this book an excellent buy is the unique method that is employed in teaching vocabulary: humorous CARTOONS that serve as visual mnemonics! You will rarely find this strategy utilized anywhere else! Verbal mnemonics for each word are also incorportated into the book. This ensures that you will not forget the words you've learned!
The words used in this resource emphasize focus on attaining a better score on the verbal section of the SAT I. I have come across most of the 300 words in this book on sample SAT Is. I would recommend this title to those who would like to effectively increase their vocabulary in a short amount of time, especially to those with weak vocabularies.
A sample word used in this book is "ubiquitous". The verbal mnemonic is "as big as us". The visual mnemonic is a cartoon that features two extremely heavyset people who claim: When you're "as big as us" you feel "ubiquitous". (Ubiquitous, by the way, refers to the quality of being everywhere at once.)

I have looked many methods in memorizing words for my daughter, and only found that they are either useless or unsustainable. Even though we have learned the new words one day, we often forgot them the next. That is because we have not learned the best use of our mind for memorization. According to psychological principles, human memorize pictures much better than letters. The wonder of this book is to help you remember words in pictures through magic links (words you know). For example, the word Aspire is linked to an easier word Retire as they have similar pronunciation. Then a cartoon shows a funny guy Jim dreaming (aspire) about retiring on the beach... The mnemonic method makes better use of our mind strength; hence it is effective in learning new words. My daughter and I tried Word Smart series, too. This book definitely offers better methods. The cartoons make the whole learning experience fun.

Since my daughter started using this book, her word learning interest is high. Much ahead of her grade level, she often gets on the honor roll in Beestar online word tests. I highly recommend this book.

I ordered this book to improve my vocabulary for the SATs. It tells you that you will learn a word a minute, and it is true. What it does is it links the word with another easier word so that you can remember the meaning easily. Then, it shows you a little cartoon. Would work perfectly especially if you are studying for an exam like the SATs.

I homeschool my children and my son's vocabulary book was entirely too dry and boring. This book instantly revived his love of learning new words. Even his younger brother likes to join in with learning the new words. The cartoons not only make the words easy to learn and remember, but are a huge motivator. The review activities are a great addition--they make for a nice assessment tool.

I just started to read this book, everyday 10 words, and i found it very useful, because i haven't forgot even one word with these all illustrations, they are great, they really help you to memorize all these difficult words , I'm a foreigner here, and I can't imagine how the book will work for native speakers, it must be excellent for them,...

The concept is wonderful; however, I wish there had been information on the grade level this book was desinged for. I can use some of the cartoons, but most are more suitable for gifted and talented, upper elementary, and middle school students.

This book is amazing. Its approach in introducing vocabulary words in a cartoon format; where kids will want to learn more is genius. I orginally purchased this book for my 12 year old. Not only did it spark his interest it also got our 7&9 year olds interested. I'm amazed!!!

At first I thought this book would help me increase my score of 650. But I soon found the book lacking in more difficult words. Words such as gainsay and mundane are words that I seem to use in my so-called coloquial language.
I only recommend this book to those who want to reinforce their vocabulary or have trouble recalling things under pressure.

I purchased this book after I read a review about it in the store. I got it about two weeks ago and I really likedit. It is really useful and it really easies your work to remember the words especially if you are studying for the SAT. You cannot go and memorize each word\ I mean it is hard but with the help of this book it is a lot easier. Soooo... Buy it!!! :D

I rated the item two stars because of the inconvenience and $$$ lost, but to be fair...it is a good book for individual use.

Good book with fun and helpful aides that help students connect the vocab words with images and associations. However, page twenty-seven contains are rather irratating sentence that denotes people of Latino ethniticity as "procrastinators." Pretty unnecessary remark considering the braod usage of this term.

My 7th grade teacher gave us one Cartoon Vocabulary word a day with a test after each set of about 20 or 30. Now, I'm in Honors English at my high school and I still remember the meanings of all of these words because of our cartoon vocabulary! These words are commited to my memory because of this book
