Very good story line. Very good pace, few grammatical errors. You can're help but empathize with the main character and how unfairly he is treated. It is very much on the darker end of the spectrum. I will definitely be reading this many times in the future!

I was riveted from the first page onward. Jex Lane has written these wonderful characters, especially the main character Matthew who you can't help but adore. Matthew is strong and vulnerable all at the same time. The way it's written you can't stop reading, I hardly breathed reading this book I was in such a rush turning the pages to see what awful/wonderful thing was going to happen next.
Best book I read last year and I bought the sequel 'Sire' straight away.
These books become a bit of an obsession, so be warned.
It's a dark book, with some sex and hints of romance but it's not a romance. It has a larger mystery that is pretty darn intriguing, so try to stay away from spoilers.
Will say though that it feels like the author was inspired by world of Warcraft in the look and feel of her creatures and some of the story elements remind me of Baldurs Gate. So many things about these books to love.

Could not put it down! Matthew's inner turmoil of who to be loyal to, who to help... vampire or incubus... was wonderful. The ending had me on the edge of my seat, and I can't wait to read the next one to find out what happens.

This is such an emotional Rollercoaster of a book! I read this in one sitting for eight hours without realizing that much time had passed. The author is great at weaving chatacters emotions into the situations and laying out battles. Poor Matthew is all I will say about his entire storyline, anything else is spoilers that you really don't want. I need more!!

I absolutely love this series. I've bought the 1st two books on Kindle, and then ordered the paperback because I wanted a physical copy. The series is one that just keeps on surprising you and craving more.

What a fantastic story! You might think that this is just another vampire storyline and dismiss it but you would be very wrong. This novel should not be missed as it is a wonderful story by an up and coming novelist and I can't wait for the next book by them. Yes this was an ARC review but I can assure you that this is definitely a must read and should not be missed. Enjoy.

Sex, fantasy and action! I was looking for a book that had those three and I found it. I would recommend this book to every gay nerd out there that want to read some man on man love and more than that! I give it a five star, because of the well written third person narration, and all the action followed by sex and then more action in a world of infinite fantasy.

Wow-- What a surprise! Just when you think vampires and other critters, like incubi are so ho-hum you'd just roll your eyes and walk on by, there comes along an adventure that doesn't bother twisting vamps into something sparkly or incubi into something sweet, but just through telling a good story, your interest is captured, just like it was with the first cool paranormal book you fell in love with... (and hey, captured, Captive! see what I did there? OK... yeah...)
So, Matthew lives in a world where the paranormal is hidden, and like so many fictional characters before him, he's jumped one night and turned into a vampire and, abandoned by his Sire, has an insatiable blood-thirst and needs to stay away from his wife and child and just learn to survive... The action starts right away as he's lured into a trap and tries to fight his way out. But it's a trap laid by a powerful Incubus Lord and he's well and truly captured, since he pretty much knows nothing about vampires and wasn't aware of other paranormals. It turns out that there's a war that's been going on between Vamps and Incubi... centuries-long, full-on war. The two sides absolutely hate each other and kill on sight... but Tarrick, the Incubus Lord, is curious about Matthew and takes him captive.
The subtitle of Beautiful Monsters is right too, and not just in a poetic way. The Incubi are all incredibly beautiful. It's their thing. But whoa, they are NOT nice. Matthew is able to survive, but mostly because he's a vampire and can manage to heal up from say, getting every bone smashed in his body. There's a hierarchy, of course, and Matthew must address Tarrick as Master. It doesn't go all Dom/sub, but there's lots of sex, m/m, m/f, and some non-consensual. This is definitely NOT G-rated. (Not to mention the violence, but hey, that's apparently OK for younger ages in the US.)
We get to know the ways of the Incubi through Matthew's eyes... of course, it's rather grim, as he's a captive and the Incubi hate vampires. The Incubi are not the good guys... but we gradually see that they aren't all bad. Just like Matthew isn't all bad because he has to kill humans for blood. There is a lot of dark, nasty areas here, and then we start seeing some lighter grey areas. There's nothing new and sparkly about what we learn, but somehow, through Matthew's eyes, it's still compelling. We don't know what's going to happen next--death? destruction? sex? punishment? maybe, love?
Matthew's voice isn't something new and sparkly, either. But he's a fairly honest narrator, and he's interesting enough for us to want to follow along on his adventure. The writing, basically, is good enough not to need some snarky or quirky personality at its core, or any crazy twists and turns or new takes on the supernatural. We just care enough about Matthew and his situation and this whole new paranormal world to really want to know what happens next. That's the basis of a great read, and this book has that. (I have to admit that I even shed a tear or two for Matthew!)
The characters and situations and cultures are pretty darn subtle beyond the battles and beat-downs. It makes you uncertain about what's going to happen while still giving you some clue. I just was totally caught up. This was the kind of book that's hard to put down, and you truly just want to keep reading--not just because you're watching a train-wreck, either. I can't wait for the next book to be released! (This book ended in a good place, but it was definitely far from tied up, which was sort of good, too!) Oh, who am I kidding... this was ALL good! If you like paranormal sex and violence and action and suspense--and some feels-- at all-- check this book out!

I truly enyoy this book. Like to travel with Matthew. I was happy, cried a lot too, get to hate Tarrick ( I still do), feel heartbroken & helpless and then save by the wonderful vampire mom of his prison friends. Even the witches make me happy. Magic make everything possible. Hope this journey put Matthew in a place with people that can be the family and love that his heart deserve. Your a awesome author Jex Lane :)

I absolutely loved this book. Have re-read it at least four times (so far). It has gorgeous monsters, steamy romance, betrayal, strategic actions, royalty and humor. Give this book a chance and I do not think you will be disappointed.

Cannot believe this was a debut book. This read like a seasoned pro penned this baby! It was a totally original & Fresh look @ a paranormal plot as far as I'm concerned. I was not @ all happy with the ending. It was a "for now" ending more than a cliffhanger for me, that ending just did not make me happy. Cracking open book #2 because I don't want to leave Matthew hanging there overnight. So many theories, so many questions!

I loooooved this book and the following two. Devoured them in a few days and then re-read them all. Captive is dark and emotional, but also sexy and exciting. You just have no idea what will happen. You'll be hooked by the first Chapter.

Matthew is a young vampire trapped between two worlds. He holds power within him. When the incubus capture him, they can see his potential but fear him for what he is. It's an amazing story of vampires and incubus, and other creatures full of possibilities. I loved Mathew's character, his kind heart, his loyalty and his strength. I wanted to slap the hell out of Tarrick. Very well written story with a lot of creativity and quite fluid. I couldn't stop reading.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book.
