Publisher's Description:

Experience the world’s most enchanting and timeless love story—retold with a dark and realistic twist.

A BEAST LIVING IN THE SHADOW OF HIS PAST

Reclusive and severely scarred Prince Adam Delacroix has remained hidden inside a secluded, decrepit castle ever since he witnessed his family’s brutal massacre. Cloaked in shadow, with only the lamentations of past ghosts for company, he has abandoned all hope, allowing the world to believe he died on that tragic eve twenty-five years ago.

A BEAUTY IN PURSUIT OF A BETTER FUTURE

Caught in a fierce snowstorm, beautiful and strong-willed Isabelle Rose seeks shelter at a castle—unaware that its beastly and disfigured master is much more than he appears to be. When he imprisons her gravely ill and blind father, she bravely offers herself in his place.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

Stripped of his emotional defenses, Adam’s humanity reawakens as he encounters a kindred soul in Isabelle. Together they will wade through darkness and discover beauty and passion in the most unlikely of places. But when a monster from Isabelle’s former life threatens their new love, Demrov’s forgotten prince must emerge from his shadows and face the world once more…

Perfect for fans of Beauty and the Beast and The Phantom of the Opera, Beauty of the Beast brings a familiar and well-loved fairy tale to life with a rich setting in the kingdom of Demrov and a captivating, Gothic voice.

Beauty of the Beast is the first standalone installment in a series of classic fairy tales reimagined with a dark and realistic twist.

Disclaimer: This is an edgy, historical romance retelling of the classic fairy tale. Due to strong sexual content, profanity, and dark subject matter, including an instance of sexual assault committed by the villain, Beauty of the Beast is not intended for readers under the age of 18.

My Thoughts:

I loved reading this retelling of Beauty and the Beast especially with the nationwide release of the Disney Action Movie of this tale.
This is of course a more adult version than the Disney one. There is violence and a deeply sensual nature to this story. It is very well written even though there is sexual violence as well as violence of the usual nature.
Adam is a prince who was the only survivor when the people revolted and killed his parents and his baby sister. The violent nature of his parents deaths and the memory of his baby sister burning to death haunt him. He was scared while trying to save his sister. His scars make him viewed as a beast and he is reclusive because of this.
Isabelle is the daughter of a merchant who is ill, nearly blind and most likely dying. In order to keep her family fed she has betrothed herself to the cruel Vicomte Dumont.
When her father decides he wishes to travel to the annual Merchants Fair she decides she must look to her betrothed for the means to travel there.
This is how she ends up with the reclusive and scared prince. It also culminates in the death of her father.
Can these two so different people find happiness together? Will they have their Happily Ever After?
This retelling of this classic French fairytale is very well written and told with the spin of an adult natured book.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this retelling of a longtime favorite. It is of course more realistic in nature than the childhood fairytale.
The characters are well developed and the storyline excellent.
I gave this dark retelling 4.75 of 5 stars for storyline and characterization and a sensual rating of 4 of 5 flames.
I received a complimentary digital ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley to read. This in no way affected my opinion of this book and I have voluntarily left my review.

Isabelle Rose is a hardworking woman who looks after her blind father and endures her two selfish stepsisters. She has to dodge the advances of Vicomte Raphael Dumont even though they are already betrothed. A trip to the Merchant's Fair is exactly what Isabelle needs to get away from the vicomte's clutches. But is she really willing to defy the snow storms with her ailing father?

Adam Delacroix has shut himself from the world when his parents were murdered and his younger sister died in fire. No one else knows he still exists, except for his faithful servant Sebastien. His world is in darkness, shrouded by the hood that keeps his monstrous face at bay. When he meets Isabelle in his threshold, his eyes alight with splendor and suddenly he comes alive. But death is imminent within his reach, and that death could very well be the reason Isabelle will never accept nor see him for the human he truly is. Not a monster, not a beast.

I love how this tale teaches us readers how to look beyond what's in front of you. Like the fairytale, it teaches us to see what's inside the heart. In this story, it also shows us the brutality of man that lives copiously in wealth doesn't mean that he is rich in attitude. Because that man of wealth could very well be vicious, a savage, a monster... More monstrous than the Beast himself.

I am truly at a loss for words after reading this beautiful retelling of one of the greatest fairy tales of all time. Aside from Cinderella, Belle of Beauty and the Beast has always been a favorite character of mine. I've read a number of retellings of this story over the years but I could never grow tired of reading them.

What made this tale different and stand out is the lack of magic and enchantments and spells on the characters. I must warn you, this isn't the typical fairytale that kids would prefer. This version is quite mature, more intense and definitely not for the little girls dreaming of rainbows and unicorns and Prince Charming. No, this one is bolder and more forward. And definitely more intimate. Just the way I like it.

This is my first book by Rachel Demeter and I am already a fan. I loved how she took so much care and attention to her stories, particularly this latest book, which came out just in time with the Disney movie. I loved how it's different from the usual fairytale retelling. I loved how beautiful and beastly the characters turned out to be. I loved how I was mesmerized by it from beginning till the end.

“Funny thing, the past. No matter how hard you try to shut it from your mind, you always hear those whispers in your skull…” That low, masculine whisper curled around her like smoke. His eyes fastened shut, and he visibly shivered, reacting to lamentations only he could hear. Overwhelmed with the urge to reach out and touch him, she twisted her fingers in the sullied fabric of her robe. “It’s inescapable; a true prison in every sense of the word. Almost like being chased by a predator. The faster you run away, the more it chases you, and the more it demands your surrender…”

A hidden castle in the woods. A hidden world that has been stumbled on. Why would anyone ever want to live in total isolation? Secluded from the world that has been constantly moving outside, while you remain frozen in the past? Our memories can truly make someone feel helpless, alone, desperate, and much more—if you let them. Demeter engages her readers with an emotional, yet mesmerizing retelling of the Beauty and the Beast fairytale. For who could ever learn to love a beast?

Isabelle lives in a little city with her Papa and two step-sisters. She is also engaged to a wretched man by the name of Rafael Dumont. His family has power. His family has wealth. And unfortunately, Isabelle would do almost anything to aide her father with his ever present illness. Agreeing to marry Rafael was one of the most repulsive things that she has ever done. Upon her father’s last request to attend the Merchant’s Fair, she crumples to his will and asks Rafael for a favor. That is when she is brutally accosted by his foulness, only realizing that this trip could be their last chance to save themselves from a cruel fate. With the Merchant’s Fair being three days away, they head out into the stormy forest with a horse and carriage borrowed from Raphael—but Isabelle notices that her father’s health will not endure throughout the trip. Noticing a very dark and dreary castle along her path, she decides to lead her father up to the door as a last prayer of saving him from death’s door. Rest may be all that he needs, if there is a kind soul inside who will allow it. When the door opens, the owner attempts to turn them away—but Isabelle becomes desperate. What Isabelle agrees to in hopes of saving her father, may imprison her and take the remainder of her soul along with it.

Adam Delacroix, surviving prince of Demrov still lives, after everyone assumed his death—but he only lives a shell of a man. Can he open his heart to a beautiful woman and her sick father or will he live up to the beast that he has become? Living in the past changes a person, but having someone to share those secrets and lift those burdens can make the difference between life and death.

Demeter provides the reader with a twist on the original ageless tale of Beauty and the Beast. With both superb character development and an outstanding plot, the story is emotionally charged with heartbreak, fear, pain, loss, joy, and hope. The pace of this novel is fast, making it easy to read; however, there are some spelling and grammatical errors throughout the read. Since this is an advanced reader copy, these may have been cleaned up upon further proofreading, but if not, this should not hinder enjoyment of the novel at all. If you are a reader of fairy tale retellings and historical romance, this may be perfect for you.

A copy of this book was provided to Turning Another Page by IndieSage PR, but this in no way affects our honest opinion of the book or the review that has been written. We provide a five-star rating for Beauty of the Beast by Rachel L Demeter.

4 stars!

“Hope is a beautiful and magical thing. Grasp it tight, monsieur, and never let go.”

Oh my what a book! I don't read a lot of retellings but as of late I've read more than ever, if one of them is good you give the genre a chance and all that - and this one was by far the best I've read lately and it came at a perfect time since the movie is coming out. The Beauty and the Beast is a classic and a favorite, plus I loved the author's previous book so I jumped right in and I loved it.

“For so long, I've lived as if I'd died. I've forgotten how it fees to be alive, to breathe fresh air and feel the sun on my face.”

The story starts with a brief glimpse of Prince Adam's past and how he became reclusive and how he was left alone. Orphaned as a child, and having gone through a terrible time, he stays in his castle away from the public eye. Flash forward, we see Isabelle living with her sick Papa, and her 2 step sisters who are unbearable. She is forced to become engaged with a truly horrible person so as to ensure her father receives the best possible health care.

Until an opportunity arrises for her merchant father to make some money and she seizes the opportunity to run away and with her father and build a new life. But she doesn't take into account the terrible snowstorm and how seriously sick her father is so in the middle of a storm she seeks shelter at a castle that seems abandoned.

“Once upon a time, in a very far-off country, there lived a merchant who had been fortunate in all his undertakings...”

The story is so beautifully written with rich descriptions and it flows so eloquently that it was impossible to put it down even though - and that was the one thing it took a while for me to get used to - it had very little dialogue. Each chapter had beautiful but long descriptions and monologues that sometimes I had to go back a few lines and re-read but that was so minor and mostly just my issue which I loved after a few chapters.

“When his youngest daughter was little, everybody admired her and called her 'the little Beauty' so that, as she grew up, she still went by the name of Beauty, which made her sisters very jealous...”

The romance is a slow burn and the characters are deep and slowing developing with each chapter, we get multiple POVs - from the 3rd person - so the story creates a nice atmosphere that involves so many different characters each one with a unique voice and a unique personality that adds to the dark theme and the complexity of the story. I loved how easy it was to read but also how captivating it was without being too much. If retellings are your thing then this is a great read - if you're thinking about exploring the genre, this should definitely be on your list.

This book blew me away . I have always love the story of Beauty and the Beast . But as i grew up the fairy tale became a little bit darker and a little bit edgier and a lot more twisted . The author transports us back to a time of princes and noblemen . Wonderful woman who are strong and yet vunerable at the same time . The story has the same lessons to be learned to love based on ones heart and not how they look . Th author dives deeper into the story and also takes us to a dark place .
The characters are so intense and so well written . Isabelle is a tender woman who loves her father with all of her heart . She will do anything to keep her family safe . Even become engaged to an evil man who just wants to own her and torture her . She seems so weak and frail at the begining of the book and a total book worm . As you read you see that she is stronger and more feirce then she lets on . The moment she sets eyes on Prince Adam . Her life changes and she grows int o a woman who will do anything to protect her man . Prince Adam is such a tortured soul after surviving a fire that wiped out everything and everyone he loved . He has gone into hiding , hiding his wounds from the world . When he meets Isabelle . Things start to change for him . He reawakens the feelings that he has had hidden for a very long time . His heart starts to open up as Isabelle falls for him. He becomes the man that will save his beloved at any cost . He is the man that we all dream of . The man that will mover heaven and earth to bring his beloved back to him. The supporting cast is also very well written . They all add to the story in some way . Some we see as evil but the others have more to them and then bam it hits you they are evil and have been taken in .
Another story that grew up . The author wove a magical tale which i couldn't put down . I got this book and started reading in one evening and finished it that night . The way the author weaves the tale is masterful . She actually transports us back to the time .  This isn't your childrens fairy tale . There is now Mrs Potts or chip , or magical candalabras dancing around . This story is darker and grittier with a twist . Their are some very dark parts in this book . There is a sexual assault in the book that might make you want to stop . But don't it adds to the story a lot . There is also strong sexual content and some swearing . This book isn't for the feint of heart. So if you want a grown up twisted fairy tale that will sweep you off your feet . Check out Beauty of the Beast by Rachel L Demeter

Woah! What a fantastic surprise this book was. I'm the first to admit I'm pretty picky with what I choose to read. I know what I like and I tend to stick to that. I want to enjoy what I'm going to read and I hate being disappointed, lol. I'll normally stick to authors I've read or recommendations or things like that. Well this book I literally stumbled across. I will say that I'm a huge fan of beauty and the beast and have a read a good few twists on it. Some are good, some not so good, but this, IMO, is the best I've read so far. I'd not read this author before but I'll definitely be reading more from her now. I absolutely loved this! It was everything I was hoping for and more and I'm super glad that I decided to go for it.

Obviously the storyline is pretty familiar but this author writes it fantastically well with some clever twists on the original tale. Firstly I'll say that this is not a sweet, flowery fairytale. It has a darker, grittier edge but is highly emotional and moving. It was a deeply atmospheric read. It reminded me of the gothic novels of old.

This is a historical story but, if you don't read historical, I wouldn't be put off by that. The story easily translates over in a contemporary way and is eminently readable. I was sucked in immediately and struggled to come back to reality when I'd finished. The writing was very good and kept me hooked all the way through.

The characters were fantastic. My heart broke for Isabelle and Adam. I adored reading their journey and watching them grow emotionally together. There is also genuine conflict and suspense plus a pretty nasty and sadistic antagonist. I love a good villain. Okay that sounds a bit wrong, lol, but writing and genuinely bad person is not easy and this author did it very well.

This pulled me through the full wringer of emotions and I was deeply invested in the characters and their story. I was in a bit of a rut, reading wise. It wasn't that I didn't enjoy what I was reading but I was desperate for something different and special to hit me with a great big bang. Well this book certainly ticked all those boxes.

Like I said before this does have some darker themes and if you're hoping for fluffy bunny stuff then this maybe not for you. I, however, loved the darker twist.

I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this and would definitely recommend. I can't wait to read some more from this author.

I must confess I fell in love with this book, who wouldn't? I grew up with this love story, about the dark cursed prince and the beautiful woman who could see past his facade.

Now that we are older we need a bit more to complete and believe the story, the prince is not a real animal/monster, there is no magic involved,he is a human that has been hurt mentally and physically; and the story doesn't end with just a romantic dance and a hug... yeah, definitely my kind of story!

Prince Adam has been through hell, nobody could ever be prepared for what happened to him and his family, and he is now guarded and angry at the world. And even though he is not conscious and would never accept it, he is scared of people, that's why he has been hiding all these years.

Belle's life has been hard to say the least, money was always tight and her stepsisters are horrible persons, but she still has her father, who unfortunately needs her and she is willing to sacrifice everything for him.

She puts everything on the line and gets sucked into a dangerous situation, because of her immaturity and her goodhearted nature that prevent her from imaging the darkness that lurks in most bad people's minds.

Their encounter is definitely not a meet cute kind of moment, she hates Adam, and she is scared to death of him, but she manages to stand up to him and he respects her for that.

The main part of the book focuses on these two people, that are really different and dance around each other poking their armors, taking them down bit by bit. When it's just Adam and Belle they realize that they have a lot in common and they actually have a crazy attraction going on.

Letting go of their fears and trusting each other is the biggest challenge, both of them have self esteem and trust issues.

A true fairy tale of the broken that finally find a way to be whole again within each other.

Beauty of the Beast is a magical retelling of the classic tale, Beauty and the Beast. But unlike other versions, there is no fairy magic where the hero is entranced by a sorceress, or where there is a chance the beast may turn into his former handsome self at the end. Adam is tragically physically disfigured and his formerly happy life destroyed. He feels he himself is a beast and shuts himself in his castle from the outside world for two decades.

We are introduced to Isabel who puts her family's well being over her own by becoming engaged to Raphael in exchange for medical care for her ailing father. Raphael is arrogant, wealthy, and very cruel. Raphael causes Isabel great physical pain and heartache yet I felt a twinge of sorrow for him because of his own upbringing. However, as the story progressed it became obvious he wasn't deserving of any sympathy and was too far gone to save.

By the time Isabel comes into Adam's life, he wants no part of the outside world. She finds a way to escape from the obsessive Raphael but ends up as a prisoner in the castle. Then the questions arise for both of them - if whether beautiful people can become beasts, and can beauty be hidden by physical scars.

I enjoyed this version of Beauty and the Beast immensely because it wasn't just a tale about a beautiful girl and a beast of a man, but rather it was about whether people can find beauty on the inside and overlook physical appearances.

Beauty of the Beast is a classic Gothic love story, and the author does a wonderful job with imagery. Stories like this remind me of why I love this genre so much. A truly captivating and riveting retelling of a beloved tale, and I look forward to the author's version of the next fairy tale.

This book was provided by the author and any opinions are my own.

When I read the blurb for Rachel Demeter’s Beauty of the Beast, I was excited. As the Facebook meme says, “I still love to read fairy tales. They are just a little dirtier now.” This story packs so much more than just a sexy retelling of a classic tale though. This story is darker and grittier than the story from your childhood. Fairy tales don’t get much better than this.

Prince Adam Delacroix of Demrov had grown up with the world at his feet. Until he was 11 years old. Then, in the span of one night, he’d lost everything. His family’s castle was besieged by revolutionaries. Adam had watched the death of his parents and sister in absolute horror. Left to die in the burning castle, he had managed to survive. But he was left scarred, both emotionally and physically. For 25 years he’d lived alone, secluded, clinging to one thought- Never trust. Never forget. Never forgive.
Isabelle Rose had spent her youth traveling all of Demrov with her father, a merchant. Theirs had been a carefree, exciting life. But as a gap between the nobility and working class grew, business had faltered. Papa had remarried to a woman with 2 daughters. They were spoiled, manipulative, greedy women, and soon Papa’s money was gone. Now Papa’s health was declining and he was almost blind. Isabelle had accepted the attentions of Vicomte Raphael Dumont, knowing he could provide for her and her family. She quickly learned, though, that Raphael was not the charming, handsome man he first appeared to be. He was a wretched, brutal man who forced his advances on Isabella leaving her bruised, afraid, and desperate for escape.
When Papa announced he wanted to attend the Merchant’s Fair, Isabella was hesitant. She knew her father’s health was failing, but this was their chance for escape. She and Papa could leave and never return. She could be free of Raphael and his insistence that she marry into his vile family. This could be a new beginning for them. One where she would no longer have to rely on Raphael Dumont.
While on the 3 day journey to the fair, the weather worsened and so did Papa’s health. They needed shelter quickly. Through the snow, Isabelle could see a crumbling castle with a faint light inside. When she knocked, the door was opened by a tall, dark, cloaked figure. Reluctantly, the figure admitted them, but when Papa appeared to be stealing a teacup, the cloaked figure threw him in the dungeon. Papa died that night and Isabelle was left overwrought with grief. Adam, knowing too well the emotional and physical tolls of despair and shock, stood by Isabelle’s bedside for 3 nights, cooling her brow, feeding her, and whispering comforting words in her ear. His deep melodic voice was like a lifeline for Isabelle.
While she slowly recovered, Isabelle got her first glimpse of her new surroundings and of the man who lived there. The castle was run down, dusty, and drafty. The furnishings were faded and moth eaten. Everything looked as if it had been rotting for an eternity, but Isabella could imagine how beautiful it once had been. Her captor was just as puzzling. Once she saw him without his hood, she was frightened. Half his face was twisted. Charred and puckered flesh distorted his features. The other half was hauntingly beautiful. His eyes were breathtakingly blue but filled with sadness and anger. “She wanted to hate him, blame him for the tragedy that had befallen her father, but she couldn’t. His touches and words were evidence of his remorse.”
For Adam, Isabelle was a reminder of what he had become. She was beautiful, untarnished. Everything he was not. She had strength and compassion he’d believed no longer existed. Part of him wanted to send her away while part of him wanted to hold her close. Adam was a formidable presence for Isabelle. She took unexpected pleasure in every detail, every imperfection. Her fascination though was mixed with fear and uncertainty. Adam offered her his home for as long as she wanted. As he watched over her and cared for her, some of Isabelle’s hatred and fear melted.
In the days that followed, Adam and Isabelle slowly got to know each other spending time together reading, playing music, exploring the castle and grounds. The castle should have felt like a prison, but instead, Isabelle felt free. At night, they would go their separate ways, yet part of Isabelle remained linked to Adam. She’d heard his cries in the night, seen him thrashing and tormented in his sleep. Something about him touched her deeply. She realized Adam was running from something too. Isabelle affected Adam deeply too. He hadn’t been this close to another human being in decades. Not without being met with revulsion. Just speaking with her made him feel connected to the world again. Isabelle was easing her way inside and taking away the shadows that had covered his world for so long.
The longer they were together in their own private world, the stronger those feelings became for both of them. Adam’s very presence set Isabelle’s pulse on fire. His body seemed to draw her in, seduce her. She had become accustomed to the mismatched sides of his face. Where she once felt horror, she now felt growing admiration. When he smiled or laughed, he was beautiful. He sometimes frightened her but he excited her too. He touched her with impossible gentleness and she felt love for him starting to blossom. Every time Isabelle came near Adam, he experienced surging emotions and a jolting connection. Fire flowed through his veins and stirred him to life. He ached for her. The chemistry between them was electric, and when they kissed, it was beyond anything either of them had ever imagined. They were thrust into a world of magic and romance. But just as they were discovering each other and enjoying true contentment and happiness, their fairytale world was threatened when Raphael finally tracked Isabelle down. Would Adam’s and Isabelle’s second chance at love be lost?

Beauty of the Beast has unbelievable character development. You really get a taste of what Adam, the beast, endured and why he had built a wall around himself. Isabelle too was a much deeper developed character than in the original story. Her life wasn’t carefree. She had hardships and demons she was running from. The villain, Raphael, wasn’t the comical, narcissistic Disney version. He was a man whose painful past had shaped him into the cruel, bitter man he was. There are no magical teacups or candelabras in this story. But there is a sweet, sometimes poignant development of an enduring love that transforms all. A beautiful, bold retelling of a timeless classic that, like the original story, gives us hope for tomorrow. We all need that. I can’t wait to see what childhood tale Rachel Demeter breathes life into next! I voluntarily read an advanced release copy of this story. Who wouldn't jump at that chance? This is my first fairytale retailing of which is very much obviously of the Disney movie that has been on repeat in my house. Before I completely lose my mind on the G movie, I thought I would give what I'm hoping is a more adult version with Beauty of the Beast. Oh boy, oh my! I had such a hard time putting this down.

The beast in this story is Adam. He's not a beast because of a curse but because of severe scars from being burned. He witnessed his family’s brutal massacre at a young age and now is a recluse in a decrepit castle with only a fateful servant and a dog for companionship. Belle, I mean Isabelle is the beauty of her village. Trapped in an engagement with Vicomte, Isabelle takes her ailing blind father to a merchant fair in hope of an opportunity to escape and start their lives anew. Caught in a storm during their journey, Isabelle and her father seek shelter at a castle, not knowing who or what lays behind the door.

Really anybody who knows the Beauty and the Beast story can pretty much figure out how and what the storyline plays out. What makes this one so different is sad, and painful Adam and Isabelle's stories are. Adam, losing his family, burned and now in hiding, oh that just killed me. Isabelle, willing to do anything for her dying father. The getting to know each other, building trust, revealing their secrets, falling in love, it's all such a beautifully haunting story well worth losing sleep over.

The story isn't without its villians, the kind you'd love to hate. Vicomte Raphael is a man I could feel a bit of pity for if he wasn't so selfishly evil. There are also the evil step-sisters, Clarice and Elizabeth, for an added Cinderella flavoring. And then there is Vivian. Her I would take a pair of scissors to her hair. All four of them are nothing but cruel to Isabelle and I can't help but applaud what happens to them.

This is my first book by author Rachel L. Demeter. She has certainly taken me on a journey with Beauty of the Beast. Her dark, haunting story of Adam and Isabelle is beautifully told and perfect for those who love HEAs. Definitely worth recommending. I look for to the next in the series.

I received this book from the JeepDiva for the express purposes of an honest review. The opinions and rating of this review are solely mine.

I've never been super excited about fairy tale retellings. I'm not really sure why that is but I have a pretty good feeling that it's because when you grow up hearing stories (or watching movies) about these fairy tales, you grow attached. Beauty and the Beast was a big one for me. I adore that Disney movie and it's hard to believe that it can be improved upon. So when Rachel Demeter sent me a message asking me to give her newest novel a read, I was a bit nervous. What if I picked it up and absolutely hated it? That's a reader's worst nightmare. But that's not how it turned out. Not at all.

First of all, the cover is absolutely beautiful. I'm definitely a cover-judger. I'll admit it. Now on to the most important part ... the actual book. As I started reading, I kept finding myself sitting on the edge of my chair, just waiting for this book to mimic Beauty and the Beast. I was just so sure that it was going to happen and I think that it really took something away from those first few chapters. I ended up stopping and going back to the beginning but without the jaded thoughts. Because not once did it mimic Beauty and the Beast. Of course it was reminiscent but it never went to mimicry. It was so much more.

This. This is what Beauty and the Beast should have been. It's probably what it would have been if it had been written for an adult audience. Isabelle was the perfect heroine. She was the perfect combination of contradictions. She was so very strong but at the same time, very fragile. She was extremely brave yet skittish. She loved beauty but also saw the beauty in flaws. She was exactly what I envisioned our beloved Belle would be like. And Prince Adam ... you want to just weep for him but at the same time, you're rooting for the handsomely scarred prince. He has put up these walls around himself and his heart, refusing to let anyone in. Getting to experience Prince Adam as he tries to traverse the rocky landscape of his transforming life was something I wish I could get back. I want that first read magic again because it was absolutely phenomenal.

I don't want to say too much about the story itself because I don't want to ruin any of the many surprises. All I will say is that it is a story that will stay with me. I'll definitely be rereading this one and I absolutely cannot wait until the next book in the series comes out because THIS is what Rachel Demeter was meant to do. These fairy tale retellings. It blew me out of the water and I'm so excited about this little sub-genre but I know I can't read something from someone else because it just won't be as good. Just have to wait for the next one from Demeter. And it won't be a patient wait!

This is my first time reading Rachel L. Demeter and I freaking loved it! I fell in love with Beauty and The Beast as a little girl when I seen the Walt Disney movie for the first time. I guess it was my first taste of damaged, scarred bad boys. There is just something so beautiful about seeing past the surface and finding true love no matter the flaws. Plus beast gives Belle a whole library and what woman could resist a man that gives you a whole room full of books! So I try to get my hands on every retelling I come across.
Beauty of the Beast was a great retelling of the classic. I felt it was like a cross between Beauty and the beast, phantom of the opera, and maybe a touch of Cinderella thrown in there. I love that instead of Adam, the beast, being a magical cursed beast he was just severely scarred. Adam's backstory was a heartbreaking and dark one. Seeing what he lived through at the age of 11 got me right in the feels! My heart bled for Adam and I fell in love with him too. Isabelle was easy to love. She had such a bright spirit. She loved her father and was loyal to her step sisters even though they were worthless and didn't deserve her loyalty. She was caring and had a good heart. She was a perfect Belle.
Adam and Isabelle were adorable together. There was such a sweet build up to their love that it felt natural and real. I loved how because there is no magic in this that Adam doesn't magically because handsome. Isabelle truly loves him scars and all. I felt Rachel L. Demeter did a great job of writing a complex and multifaceted villain. Raphael was evil but his character was so well developed that I could understand why he was evil and though I hated him I at times felt sorry for all he had lived through too. I enjoyed this book from beginning to end and I loved the epilogue. It had everything I adore about the classic Beauty and the Beast with just enough difference to still feel new. Beauty of the Beast was a wonderful read and I would recommend it to anyone who loves Beauty and the Beast!

Based on one of my favourite fairytales, Beauty of the Beast is a darker wonderful retelling of the classic with a Phantom of the Opera feel and, whilst there are naturally similarities, it's very much it's own story centralised around strong characters.

"...he resembled more of a beast than any man she’d ever seen."

Rachel L. Demeter is a new author to me and her storytelling kept me gripped from start to finish: Adam and Isabelle quickly worked their way into my heart, breaking it along the way and piecing it back together.

"You must stay here as my mistress. For as long as I demand. Perhaps forever."

Isabelle Rose is a lot of Belle and a little bit Cinders, focussed on her ailing father whilst trying to ignore her shallow, greedy step-sisters. But it's what she experiences before meeting Adam that shows her strength and whilst this is very much the darker element, it's pivotal to both hers and the overall story and Rachel has handled it with sensitivity. Needless to say I loved Isabelle, for her heart and her strong-willed determination despite her experiences. Prince Adam Delacroix is a contradiction of himself and for someone who is withdrawn and living his life as a recluse, he has a strong, confident presence, yet underneath is the more vulnerable, tormented but gentle, thoughtful man that you would expect.

"I’ve done things I don’t expect forgiveness for, Isabelle. But being with you... It makes me yearn to be a greater man."

I adored this couple together from the moment they met and, as the focus is completely on them for a large part of the book, we go through every step of their relationship with them, from the hate and the fight, to the walls around their hearts beginning to crumble and them beginning to beat for one another.

"...who has been here for you in your hours of darkness?"

Being book one in the Fairytale Retellings series, I'm very much looking forward to seeing which favourite Rachel L. Demeter brings us next and the twists she creates.

Purely Magical,
Breathtakingly Beautiful
Dark, yet whimsical
Enchanting, and haunting
Mesmerising, and unforgettable.

These are just but a few words that come to mind when I think of this fantastical retelling of Beauty and the Beast. Not only has the author, successfully, woven a story filled with the heartbeat of the original, she has also fused it with the dark elements of The Phantom of the Opera, as well as snippets of Cinderella. I found myself immersed within the hauntingly beautiful pages filled with descriptive words that floated magically in a way that had me completely engaged and falling in love with this beautiful rendition of a story that is a favourite of mine.

I cherished every word and felt every feeling. My heart pounded repeatedly and my senses heightened by the heartbreak the characters endured and the tenderness in which their love for one another grew over time. Our Beast, Adam Delacroix is that of a scarred man, both physically and emotionally. He has shunned the outside world, living within the halls of his tormented past, withering away and forgetting what it's like to be alive. Enter our Beauty, Isabelle Rose and his non-existent life will forever change.

Both escaping pasts that would consume them whole, if they allowed it, these two slowly strip away the layers that would unleash their truths and bring about a love that would stand the tests of time. It was such a breathtaking sight to behold, so to speak, and an experience that will forever be in my heart. Our dear and wonderful author has spun a tale that is filled with so much love and hope, of longing and beauty, of healing and faith, that what we see presented on the outside, is never what it seems. That the way we look isn't representative of who we are.

I would love to thank the author, Rachel L. Demeter for writing such a beautiful retelling. And in doing so, I have fallen in love with the way she can capture my heart with her splendid way with words. Absolutely stunning.

With the sudden popularity of fairy tale retellings and the wildly divergent results of those retellings, I wasn't quite sure what to expect from Rachel L. Demeter's Beauty of the Beast. This was the first book I've read by Ms. Demeter, after all. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that Ms. Demeter has taken this popular fairy tale and made it her own, whilst making it clearly recognizable.

Prince Adam Delacroix is horrifically scarred and a recluse. He hides in the ruins of his family's castle, having witnessed their brutal murder. Isabelle is kind-hearted and would do anything for her ill and blind father. When a storm forces her and her father to take shelter in his castle, it is only a matter of time for Isabelle and Adam to clash - and eventually, for them to fall in love.

Ms. Demeter makes it clear from the opening pages that this is not a book for the faint of heart as the opening scene is the one that scars Adam. Whilst he is the beast in outward form, I would also argue that the villain of this piece serves as the beast, given his actions. Heed the warnings provided in the blurb!

As a testament to Ms. Demeter's writing, all of her characters are complex, including the villain. As horrific of a person as he is, I couldn't help but feel a tiny bit bad for him. While the plot line is familiar, the author tackles it with aplomb and draws the reader into the world she creates. Overall, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed reading this book and I'm looking forward to reading Ms. Demeter's future works.

NB: I received a copy of the book from the author. I have voluntarily chosen to review it.

Rachel, Rachel, Rachel. Why have I not read any of your work before now?? This book was absolutely AMAZING!! I loved every single word of this book.

Beauty of the Beast is nothing like I expected; it was so much more! I have never read a historical romance before, so I was slightly hesitant to read this. But the gothic, fairy-tale retelling is what drew me in and had me inclined to give this book a go. And I am so glad that I did.

It's the retelling of my favorite fairy-tale, Beauty of the Beast but told in historical times. And Rachel does an extraordinary job of taking you back in time and placing you right in the heart of this story. I was able to so easily depict and see these villages, castles, landscapes, etc. The way they spoke, I could easily hear them in my head. Rachel's writing brought her words to life. Rachel doesn't mimic Beauty and the Beast - her story compliments it, gives it new life.

You will love Isabelle and Adam. Their stories are heart achingly beautiful. Isabelle is a delicate yet strong woman. She sees beyond the surface. Adam has become locked away not just physically but mentally and emotionally. He has closed himself off from everyone but his life-long friend, Sebastian.

Even if I never knew of this fairy-tale, I would have loved this book just as much. It felt like I was watching this whole book play out before my eyes. It's an unbelievably great read. And for me to say that about a genre I would have never touched before, that's saying a lot.

Phenomenal job, Rachel. I look forward to reading more of your books and I hope that you retell another fairy-tale in your future work.

I absolutely loved this! I was a little worried that it was going to be another of "those" books. The ones that are a re-telling that is actually the same story more or less. It was not that. This author takes a classic story and runs parallel with her own version. It is very much a story in its own. This is very much Not a childrens story any more. Please heed the authors warnings.
First we have Isabelle Rose. She is engaged to a horrible, powerful man. Raphael Vicomte. Her father has fallen is and is rather old. Raphael has promised the moon and stars, (well medicine and food) if Isabelle will marry him. So of course she becomes engaged. After Monsieur le Vicomte's true colors emerge, Isabelles blind father decides they need to get away to the Merchants Fair one last time. Against her judgement she agrees. With a horrible fiancee behind her, her fathers death looming in front of them, and a snowstorm blazing above them, Isabelle takes refuge in a dark and dismal castle.
Adam Delacroix..... (we find out its actually prince, but that thankfully doesnt play a big role) Horribly scarred from his traumatic childhood, and filled with anger and hate, he does NOT want visitors. And definitely doesnt need a pair of thieves staying in his home. So when he catches the man stealing from him after he opened his doors to them, well its to the dungeons.
We follow this story along, and it is obvious that is has some similarities, but for me it is a complete story all in its own. It is rare that I am nicely surprised by a book, but this one definitely did it.

I am always excited to read a retelling of Beauty and the Beast! The fairy tale is relatively simple in terms of plot, but it is interesting to me to see how authors develop the characters and the romance, and with “Beauty of the Beast”, I found the characters, the romance and the plot to be riveting.

I loved that Isabelle and Adam were each developed separately and the reader was given a chance to understand how lost and unhappy they were before they met in the story. They both have tragic backstories, but I was more drawn to Isabelle’s backstory because the immediacy of her plight, and her fears about her engagement to a brute of a man helped flesh out her character and gave her romance with the “Beast” (Adam) more poignancy and tenderness.

The reworking of the fairy tale was so clever because it felt close to the original tale (similar setting) but also introduced some elements of the Disney movie, and some similarities with Phantom of the Opera which I really enjoyed. All of these elements gave the fairy tale more depth and made the characters and their romance more heartfelt.

This novel is adult oriented though. There were some descriptive sex scenes, that were satisfying to read in terms of developing the romance, but they did seem a little too long and overwrought sometimes. Thankfully it doesn’t overwhelm the story, because of the great plot and the writing is excellent.

I thoroughly enjoyed this retelling and appreciated how thoughtfully the author reworked the themes and the romance.

(I received a copy of this novel from the author or publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review. I was not compensated for this review.)

Beauty of the Beast' by Rachel L. Demeter is book One in the "Fairy Tale Retellings" series. This is the story of Isabelle Rose and Prince Adam Delacroix. This did remind me allot of 'The Beauty and the Beast' story but with a much darker and hotter story line. Isabelle lived with her father and two step sisters. Isabelle had thought she fell in love with Raphael but soon learned that as handsome as he was he was actually a monster inside. Now she tries to do everything to avoid him and doesn't want to marry him. Isabelle step-sister are very mean to her in addition to the hardships she has to go through along with having her father very sick. Isabelle and her father go traveling where they are caught in a storm that leads them to Adams castle. Adam has his own issue that he is dealing with. Adam has cut himself off from everyone but one childhood friend. Adam was badly burned with his parents and sister died after being betrayed...their house caught on fire. Adam was the only one to get out along with his childhood friend. But the scars and they anger has left him a beast . So when Isabelle and her father come to his door he tries to turn them away. But Isabelle is not having that and goes on in. There her father does something that angers Adam and he puts him into the dungeon overnight. But with her father so sick and the weather they were out made it so that her father didn't survive the night. Adam plans on keeping Isabelle as his mistress and Isabelle is to upset to fight him. But along the way they start to interact and things start to change. But will Isabelle's past come back for her?

An unusual reselling of the classic and some would say timeless love story that many have grown to love. Yet this author in many ways stays close to the fairytale we know whilst adding a more realistic slant. Set in nineteenth century Europe with all its political unrest the author offers her readers not magic and curses but the aftermath of bloodshed and an unrelenting fire. Yes our Beast is a Prince, badly burned as a child and now hidden away from sight with just a dog and the occasional visit from an old friend.
Into this picture steps Isabelle, devoted to her ailing father and oddly having almost Cinderella like step sisters! Fear not though for events occur which mean Isabelle remains in the castle with Adam and slowly chips away at his hardened heart. Yet as with all good stories there is a villain but here the author makes him poignant to the point that as a reader I almost ( only almost) had sympathy for him.
Brutal at times , yet clearly a very grown up read. The romance is beautifully told and the author clearly enjoys writing descriptive prose. Nothing is rushed and I loved the way the couple grow to trust and ultimately love each other. Not always a story full of hearts and flowers though as its injected with tragedy and surprises. With a melodramatic climax that had so much resolved at once and yet even then I understood the reasons why . A dark and sexy retelling that's emotional with an ending to satisfy the most vengeful hearts! From a new to me author whose work I will look out for

It's a retelling of classic fairy tale Beauty and the Beast. I think that the author has done justice to the original story, its well-written and captures characters of both 'Beauty' and 'Beast' wonderfully. I enjoyed reading it and I think anyone who likes fairy tales will love this new version of an old tale. Personally, I've always loved Beauty and the Beast. Story has so much depth and it tells us insights about human mind ans soul. On one hand, there is Beast, an outwardly ugly man with a pure heart. On the other hand, there is Raphael, a handsome man who is rotten to the core. Choice is simple, how can Isabella not love the Beast?
Adam has lived in isolation for so long that he has forgotten how to interact with people. You can say that his mannerism is beastly. But as soon as he sees Isabella something changes. He wants to make her comfortable and happy. Soon he starts to love her but fears that she will never love someone like him. Little does he know that Isabella has such a kind and beautiful heart that she can see beyond his outer looks. She knows that Adam is the man for her. May be she will finally find her happiness.
“Here is my secret. It is very simple: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.”
Definitely a great read. I believe that story has stayed close to the classic version but still there are enough surprises to keep readers on their toes. I'd recommend it to my fellow readers.

I. Could. Not. Stop. Reading!

This is my first book that I've read with this author, and it's like she knew that I adore Beauty and the Beast. I think she's psychic??! Ha. That being said, if anyone is a fan of the classic, Beauty and the Beast, you have to give this book a try because you won't be disappointed! Especially since this is the grown up version * wink wink*
Okay, enough fan-girling, so about the book – Ms. Demeter is very good at describing everything, she makes you feel like you're actually in the book with the characters, experiencing what they're feeling and what not. I like that. Also, it flowed very nice. You're not bored within the first 30 minutes of reading saying to yourself, “Is this going to pick up soon, or what?!” It pretty much took off from the start. For Isabelle to really be strong and find herself, she needs to get her and her father away from the antagonist of the story Raphael. Did I mention the author is good at making you feel what the characters are feeling? Because you will really dislike that man! Unlike Adam...poor damaged Adam! I fell in love with his character. He was a really good “Beast” with his disfigurement from his injuries he had as a kid; his personality and attitude towards everyone fit the book perfectly and when Isabelle came along she turned his complacent world upside down!

5 huge stars from me, and I really look forward to reading more in this 'Fairy tale Retellings' series if the author continues it!

Captivating. I couldn't put this little gem down.

The fairytale of Beauty and the Beast we know but that doesn't mean you have read this story. I loved every minute of it and didn't want it to end. It follows the similar storyline of the Disney version. However, the plot is it's own.

Adam lost everything in a fire; his family, his personal possessions and his stunning good looks. He is disfigured- The beast. He turned his back on the world years ago.

Isabelle just wants to look after her sick father. She is willing to do whatever it takes. Isabelle is even willing to sell her soul to the devil. She dreams of finding true love, but her nightmares are becoming closer to reality.

This book is described as a dark re-telling of the story. However, I have to say it doesn't come close to Disfigured love by Georgia Le Carre. This book is a little dark, but there is also a lot of love. I have read quite a few Beauty and the Beast books and this is definitely one of my favourites (the other being Broken by Lauren Layne which is completely different to this).

I would say the intend audience for this beauty is 18+.

5+ stars out of 5. I couldn't get enough of this and I would definitely consider reading more by this author. Not many books make it onto my Goodreads favourite shelf but this one easily slides on. Thanks Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

What a take on the fairy tale of Beauty and the Beast. This is definitely the adult version with a lot of angst, a gothic twist and strong emotional depth. Oh, also sexual tension and c h e m i s t r y!!!

Isabella is a beautiful and kind hearted. She lives with her not so nice stepsisters and cares for her ill Father. She is engaged to a wicked suitor who she goes to for a favor. He father wishes (Isabella fears this is his last dying wish) to visit a merchants fair and they need transportation. Isabella makes a deal with her fiancé for use of his carriage.

Adam is a scarred prince who experienced a traffic and horrific childhood. He witnessed the destruction by fire of his home/castle as well as the death of his family. He lives in shell of his home/castle in solitude and anger. We open with the scene of this playing out and it's heart breaking to read.

During Isabella and fathers journey to the fair they are caught in a storm and seek shelter in the decrepit castle. They are confronted by Adam at the door who tries to deny them help. Isabella will have non of that and convinces Adam to allow them shelter.

The beginning of Isabella and Adam's relationship begins with heartbreak as Isabella father dies. The two have so much pain, heartbreak and trust issues that it would seems almost impossible to insurmountable to overcome. But as the two come to know each other, slowly and carefully revealing their heart and thoughts to each other, they begin a healing process. But there are forces and people that are out to destroy, hurt and kill them.

What a rich and emotional read. It's got a dark feel but yet you have a sense of this promise of hope and happiness just in reach. The characters a so multi faceted, with rich depth and deep emotion. Chemistry and sexual tension jump off the pages. The feel and scenes suck you into the time period as well as what each individual is experiencing and feeling. The evil characters and villains you will truly hate. Your heart will ache for each of these characters. You will cheer for their well deserved HEA. Well written and a page turner

Who hasn’t grown up with classic fairytales their whole lives? As a little girl, I knew in my heart of hearts that I was a princess. I always loved fairytales, nothing has changed as I’ve gotten older. Beauty and the Beast has always, always been my favorite fairytale. Needless to say when I read the synopsis, I was excited to dive right into Beauty of the Beast.

I’ve read countless fairytale retellings and Beauty of the Beast would have to be in my top 10 favorites. This story is beautifully written with such picturesque details. It teaches you to see past people’s outward appearances and not to judge a book by its cover. This story drew me in right from the prologue. It starts out with the devastating fate of Adam’s family. It was horrible what happened to him as a young boy and it made my heart ache. He grew up scarred, not only physically but emotionally as well. You could feel his pain and heartache as if it were your own. Slowly, Isabelle pulls him from the depths of his despair. Together, they find exactly what they both were missing in their lives.

Beauty of the Beast is a story that not only fans of fairytales and Beauty and the Beast will love, but fans of historical romance will love as well. It’s a story that reminds us that true love will always prevail. It shows us that looks and appearances are superficial and what really matters is the inner qualities of others.

Absolutely beautiful. A perfect retelling of one of the most famous fairy tales. This version doesn't involve talking teapots or enchanted roses, but this retelling is still beyond magical.

Prince Adam isn't a hairy beast with sharp teeth. He is just a man with a painful past. On the outside, he has scars all over his body from being burned. On the inside, he is hiding from civilization and himself. He doesn't trust anyone. If he is a monster, it is because others made him that way.

When Isabelle and her ill father stumbled onto his doorsteps during a blizzard, he tried to turn them away. But she held her head high and refused to be ignored. Eventually, their hearts thawed, and a relationship stronger than any spell was created.

This book isn't for young adults because there are some steamy scenes towards the end. And as the Prince has never been with a woman before, he fantasizes a lot about Isabelle.

I loved the story and the way the prince desired to be a better man all because of Isabelle. There were some moments where it was a little repetitive. For example, the story kept bringing up dust motes flying in the air. There were also some abrupt stops when the two were making out. But overall, I enjoyed every second, and I can't wait to read more by Rachel L. Demeter.

Beauty of the Beast is everything I hoped it would be and more. With multi-faceted characters, amazing setting details, and a dark, gripping, intriguing plot, author Rachel L. Demeter creates a stunning fairy tale retelling that captures a reader’s heart and imagination right at the start.

Adam and Isabelle are two fascinating, deeply layered characters, with their own personal set of troubles and wounds, that make connecting to each other rather difficult. But despite their individual experiences and pain, there is in an underlying strength in them and a vulnerability that allows them both to see each other more fully. And to connect in ways neither one of them ever expected to find.

Incredible writing, phenomenal storytelling, and an in-depth attention to psychological characterization make Beauty of the Beast a standout read that is dark, sexy, raw, and real. It is also heartbreaking and beautiful and engrossingly mesmerizing to read.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Rachel L. Demeter is a writer I trust to tell me an amazing story time and time again. She creates rich, beautiful worlds that completely pull me in and characters who both break my heart and fascinate me to uncover more. Love her writing and love this story.

Wow! This retelling of the classic fairy tale is like nothing I've read before, and I soaked up every word while I was reading it, it's just that damn good! I'm not going to rehash the story because at the foundation it's the story we grew up with, but with Ms. Demeter's spin on it, it's almost like reading a whole new story, definitely one NOT meant for children. Ms. Demeter has a way with the written word that you manage to feel the emotions of the characters, you feel the love Isabelle has for her father, what's she already suffered through with the man she's betrothed to, and her inner strength. You might find yourself surprised by the capacity of Isabelle's heart and her fortitude in moving forward in life and love and trusting the man buried under decades of torment and despair in Adam. There are events in this book that will make you uncomfortable as you read them, but know they happen because Ms. Demeter wants it like that, but rather so you see how the characters learn to deal with and heal and grow from such tragic circumstances. So yes, this retelling is a bit on the dark side, but trust me when I say it is worth the read and the book hangover, and I will be eagerly awaiting however many fairy tales Ms. Demeter would like to spin in her own way.

Beauty of the Beast by Rachel L. Demeter was exactly what I needed right before seeing the super fab live action remake of Disney's Beauty and the Beast. It reminded me of the more realistic, somewhat sad version of the classic tale.

I loved Isabelle. She was true to the times, yet fierce and unrelenting when necessary. Her strength of character was only out shined by her ability to love. Lost, cold, and caring for her ill father, Isabelle refuses to take no for an answer when they find Prince Adam's castle are in need of shelter. Her willingness to marry a horrible man (and omg, he is AWFUL) to ensure her family is taken care of broke my heart.

Prince Adam was very well written. The way we are shown his past really set the stage for his desire to be alone and the depths of his sadness. But the way he cared for Isabelle proved that even after years of anger and self-hatred, his heart was still strong and seeking someone to fill it with love.

Certainly not an easy read, Beauty of the Beast dives into the less beautiful side of relationships and the pain of not measuring up. But it also allows the reader to see that even when surrounded by darkness, there is always light .. if you look for it.

This retelling gives the drama of the beast a bit more flare and political stance behind it. The original beauty of the original telling of this fairy tale was not lost in translation. All the way down to the selfish sisters that only concern was material things and how things would benefit them and no one else. This was a read that enchanted and delivered that spark of long for gotten fairy tale romance. There was drama, intrigue, a villain, and villainess, death, sacrifice, and true love that shined beyond the brightest candles. I found this as a read that would draw me back to it on my shelf dedicated to fairy tales and their re-telling with twist and turns.

Prince Adam was a prince that no longer had a kingdom. He was a prince without a true purpose. He was a prince that had generally lost his way but with a special light he found it once again. Isabelle was everything that a fairy tale beauty should be. Sweet, innocent, loving, and kind. She had that inner beauty as well as the beauty that shone outside. Their journey toward each other was nothing compared to the battle they had to stay together. This was a read to keep and re-read over again.

Title: Beauty Of The Beast

Thoughts: Well, as soon as I realized this was a Beauty and the Beast retelling I had to read it and I'm so glad I did. There isn't really any magic or fantasy, other than the roses being in bloom all the time, but it's still a magical story. The "beast" is just a man, but being burned has left him looking like a monster. Adam has locked himself away from the world and would prefer to stay that way until one stormy night brings unwanted guests knocking on his door, Isabelle and her sick father. There are many similarities to the Disney movie and I loved that, especially the library, but there were enough differences that had me wondering what was going to happen next. Beautiful story!

I loved this adaptation. This is more emotional and compelling than the beauty of the beast we know from childhood. It also is more real. We have a young boy who is emotionally and physically scarred by betrayals of the past he becomes a man. A man who is hidden in shadows in his castle. Adam is this man and he becomes a shell of himself. He hides away and lets the ghosts of the past control him.

When a young girl shows up he isn’t exactly nice at first by does allow us to see him become more human. He starts to face the past and let go. He also allows himself to feel and hope. Isabelle sees beyond the scars that Adam carries inside and out and she sees someone who is suffering but kind. She sees who Adam once was and can be again. this doesn’t mean there aren’t stumbling blocks because oh there are. There are some twists and turns as well. Adam has such guilt and anger and Isabelle helps him with it but she also shows him that how he looks doesn’t matter. Isabelle lets him feel alive again and that the village won’t see him as a beast but one of the lost royalty who can help them.

I loved that Demeter didn’t have Adam change from beast to gorgeous again but found that it was what is inside and your heart that makes you beautiful all around. He doesn’t gain beauty on the outside again but gains his life and himself back. He gains beauty from within and love and acceptance not only from himself but from Isabelle and this makes all the difference. The romance aspect is so sweet and sensual. It isn’t instaromance but one that comes about over time as Isabelle and Adam feel each other out and get to know one another. they develop a friendship and trust first. From there we see Adam grow and let go. He releases the past and lets Isabelle in. she helps him feel safe, supported and loved. She is his rock and helps him see he is more than what is on the outside but he is a person with a soul and a heart. His transformation is from within and this helps make the story more alluring and intriguing. his journey is very emotional and heartbreaking at times but in the end it is so worth it for he comes out more alive and with love from a woman whom he loves dearly.

A wonderful alluring adaptation of Beauty and the beast with a great twist and a sensual romance as well.

As far as 2017 goes, this was my favorite read so far (please don't hate me, other books!) I love beauty and the beast adaptations, and though this retelling was only slightly different from the original story, that still managed to turn it into something beautifully unique full of characters that all had different sides of a story to tell. The bad guys, for example, while horrid, were just as wronged in the wrong, and if I didn't hate them so much in this story, they'd probably be one of my favorite characters in general. But, they are in this story, so they're just psychos I'm not afraid to say goodbye to after I finished the last page lol

I loved the writing, the flow of it. The characters all seemed so well rounded with their many faces to wear. The tone was nice and mysterious, matching the castle rather well. An overall satisfying read.

Beauty of the Beast is a realistic historical fairy tale retelling. I’ll let you figure out which fairy tale. ?

From the start I was lost in this epic tale. The setting (though over described for this particular readers tastes) was epic and beautiful. The heroine kind and caring. The hero, beyond damaged. And the villain? Just when you loathe him beyond imagination, the author gives you a taste of his backstory and you almost don’t hate him as much. Almost.

It was fun to read this book and compare events and scenes to the Disney version, at times they were nearly identical, but at other times they were brand new. I much preferred the brand new, because it was something… new!

I loved the backstory of Prince Adam, how he was forced to watch his family murdered, how he was burned and badly disfigured. It was at times TOO well described. Leaving me feeling a little sick. (I mean that in the best way.)

I honestly didn’t care as much for Isabelle, I’m not sure if it was her use of Mon Dieu all the time or what. But something about her kept me from fully connecting. She was well developed, so I think its just me. Isabelle and I probably just wouldn’t be good friends if she was a real person.

Raphael, the villain, is a selfish, arrogant, drunken jackass. I was absolutely repulsed by him. I couldn’t believe Isabelle would ever have agreed to marry him, no matter how dire her situation. In other words, he was a great villain.

I liked that Demeter also added in a couple of “wicked step-sisters” for Isabelle. It was a nice touch, one of those changes from the Disney version that I appreciated.

The love story built slowly. So slowly that I can’t really pinpoint the moment their relationship turned into “something more”.

I would recommend this for fans of sweeping epic historical romances. Those looking for the magic and wonder typically found in a fairy tale will be disappointed that there are no evil witches and curses. A word of warning though, this book gets very dark in a few places.

My Thoughts - Story
Let me start with… I am definitely not a fan of fairy tale retellings no matter how it differs from the kiddie books.

When Ms. Demeter approached me to review her book, I immediately rolled my eyes to the heavens and dreaded even reading the first sentence, but I gave it everything I had and cleared my mind of past prejudices.

Well, what a surprise when I didn’t get the “mansy, pansy” heroine and the fluffy romance. Instead this was hard, gritty and at times gut wrenching. Yes, there are a few parts that can be considered triggers and the faint of heart should be warned, but give it a shot because as the story goes on…you will find yourself on the edge of your seat waiting to find out what happens next.

Yes, it does follow the general story of Beauty and the Beast but there are so many differences that you won’t exactly know what to expect next.

The angst, romance, and adventure are on every page you turn and there won’t be a time that you feel that the author has over described a scene or got lost with feelings and emotions. This is the right mix of everything combined and Ms. Demeter did a wonderful job of bringing two characters together in a romance of a lifetime!

Beauty of the Beast (Fairy Tale Retellings Book 1) Kindle Edition
by Rachel L. Demeter
I received a complimentary copy in exchange for a honest review.

A story for every girl who wanted to be with the Phantom and every boy who believed himself to be the Beast, Ms. Demeter has created a Gothic fairytale in 19th century France and it's imaginary

Creating the perfect fairy-tale retelling as told by a mixologist. 1 shot of Bronte (I think Charlotte tastes best but some will see Emily as more to taste), 1 shot of Gaston Leroux, two shakes of Chinderella. Shake and strain into a glass and top off with Charles Perrault. The influence of all these writers and their heroes and heroines makes this a glorious retelling of Beauty and the Beast with just a little Jane Eyre and a little Phantom of the Opera. It's a Gothic romance, which doesn't mean moodie GenX'rs and Millennials drowin in black eyeliner but rather the writing style. Ms. Demeter makes the style all her own with her deep descriptions that set the tone of each scene perfectly. She also displays emotions, not by naming them but by showing the outer actions and the face that reveals, even for an instant the disparity.

Ms. Demeter has created a lovable story that is 50% Beauty and the Beast (Disney not Perrault) 40% Phantom of the Opera and 10% Cinderella written very much in the style of the Bronte sisters. I fell in love with Adam the same way I fell for Mr Rochester, Eric (The Phantom – he does have a name) and the Beast. But was overwhelmed with the number of unnecessary characters. The servant and the mistress were totally unnecessary. And once again, someone left out Beauty's brothers.

All in all a passionately written, Gothic romance with a penchant for an adjective overdose.

****SIX HEARTBREAKING, BEASTLY STARS****

I can't even with this novel - and in a good way.

Rachel L. Demeter has yet to disappoint with her outstanding writing techniques, and pulling a reader into her work. BEAUTY OF THE BEAST was an outstanding read that drew me in, and kept me there. Seeing as Beauty and the Beast is one of my all time favorite fairy tales, this novel was a must read for me. The cover art was outstandingly beautiful, and really captured the original tale of the beast that lives in the broken down castle, forever broken, and forgotten, a human being rests in the shadows where he watches the world pass him by. Other than a lone servant that has stood by his side for twenty-five years, Adam Delacroix, is a mysterious, powerful character who was absolutely stunning to fall in love with.

In a town, about two days away from the broken castle is a mademoiselle. Her looks, and knowledge, and quick wit are all adored by the townsfolk. She's so much more than what meets the eye. Isabelle Rose was a well written, heart breaking, and heart mending character that saw beneath all the stories, and rumors, and saw what Adam really is. But that isn't after she accuses him of being a monster, and blaming him for something that was completely out of his control - just like his life had been spiraling out of control before she graced him with her presence.

So, a little bit of heartache, a little bit of romance (which was completely hot, by the way), a little bit of back stabbing nonsense by a friend that never should have stuck their nose in in the first place. What I thoroughly enjoyed about this novel was that the story kicked back and forth between Adam's voice, Isabelle's voice, as well as two other characters voices. Never once did it get confusing. Now, you see I used voice, and not point of view? I felt that the characters spoke instead of saw. The tense of writing was perfect, and went so well with the time period, and feel of the novel.

As the age old fairy tale goes, a fair maiden stumbles upon a man who is not who he seems to be upon the first meeting. Cold, heartless, and not kind towards visitors, Adam Delacroix has had so much happen in his short life span, that when the beauty that is Isabelle Rose knocks on his castle doors, he hesitates to let her and her ailing father in from the storm that raged behind them. But they were running away from more than just the rain, and cold weather that drug them to the door of the castle. So, so much more. Adam takes pity on them, and things turn worse for the wear when he catches what seems to be a teacup disappearing beneath a cloak. From there, Isabelle sees the man for what he truly is, and lashes out, calling him a monster. I'll leave it there for there is so much more to this novel than meets the eye.

BEAUTY OF THE BEAST had a fine resemblance, and nice balance between Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, and a speck of Phantom of the Opera - all of which are my favorite stories/tales/movies/books. BEAUTY OF THE BEAST was outstandingly written. As I said, Rachel's writing never ceases to amaze me, and I am so looking forward to this series of favorite fairy tale novels with their dark twists around every corner.

Not the Disney Fairytale we all love this is darker! It reads like a beautiful but sad historical fiction novel not just a retelling of a popular children's story. Yes the pieces of the classic are there but it stands as story of its own. It is written with elements of Beauty and the Beast but also Phantom of the Opera. I just loved it!!
There was no horrible witch curse, the evil of man has turned Prince Adam into a sad recluse of a beast.
Isabelle is a sweet villiage girl caring for her ill father and stuck in a horrible loveless engagement.
Raphael is our 'Gaston' and is far worse than our storybook character he has a past that made him an EVIL man.
"A tale as old as time, song as old as rhyme, Beauty and the Beast" Yes we all know that story but this retelling, this version is different, told with new words making it a heartbreakingly beautiful romance.

BEAUTY OF THE BEAST was a beautifully written twist on Beauty and the Beast—with a little bit of a Cinderella feel mixed in.

I was completely engrossed in BEAUTY OF THE BEAST from the beginning. You quickly get a feel for Isabelle's inner strength as she finds a way to take her ailing father and flee from the monster of a man she agreed to marry before he showed his true colors. A little of Isabelle's heart is shown when she tries to get her greedy step-sisters to come with her even though they make both her and her fathers life miserable to try and save them from poverty when they're gone. Her strong will makes an appearance when she approaches a castle in a snow storm and demands shelter for her and her ill father from the man that tries to turn them away. Adam is bitter due to the cards that he has been dealt in life. It took me a little bit to warm up to him, but his true colors start to bleed through as Isabelle awakens his heart and shows him how to live and trust again.

As a couple, Isabelle and Adam were amazing. They both had issues that had to be worked through, but both had a way of helping the other grow. I never doubted their connection or relationship—even though they both doubted it at multiple points throughout the story.

The world was fantastic. I'm not really a fan of historical settings, but I was so engrossed in the characters and storyline I hardly noticed. I loved every single second of BEAUTY OF THE BEAST and wish there was more story to read, but I was pleased with how things ended. I'm excited to see what story Rachel Demeter brings to life next.

While historical romance isn't my go-to genre, Rachel L. Demeter sure can tell a beautifully descriptive tale that I enjoy reading. This is the second time she's brought a story to life in my mind with her writing style.

"Love me for me. Nothing more, and nothing less."

We all know the story of Beauty and the Beast, however Rachel L. Demeter puts her own spin on it. We have our beauty as well as our beast, but we also have all kinds of drama surrounding them, which assures they don't become instantly smitten with each other.

Isabelle is a strong girl with a strong love for her father. So strong she will take a chance on an old, abandoned-looking castle when he takes a turn for the worse during thier travels. He is Isabelle's number one priority since it's just been the two of them for so long.

Adam Delacroix is said owner of the castle and isn't a fan of unexpected guests. Actually, he hasn't expected a guest in twenty five years. He's a hard man, on the inside and out after a family tragedy long ago. He is fine in his castle alone, until he is forced to let the beautiful stranger in.

As in the classic tale, our beauty isn't a huge fan of the beast at first and that's the way he likes is. Adam has tried "normal" before, but quickly realized he isn't welcome in that world anymore. The longer she's around, the faster the ice around his heart starts to melt. Isabelle shows Adam that there is still some good left out there in the world.

"I-I need to understand. If I am to ever find happiness here, if I'm ever to know light, I need to see through the shadows first."

It's a friends to lovers story. Adam and Isabelle learn and grow together and it was fantastic. In the safety of the castle, nothing but the past can come between them now. A past that isn't too far behind for the beautiful Isabelle and I read on pins and needles waiting for it to all fall apart.

The book is well written and I appreciate that Rachel L. Demeter went a little darker this time around as it gave the story the angst it needed. Knowing what was looming over Adam and Isabelle was almost painful, but it was a good hurt. Rachel L. Demeter can tell me a story anytime.

The years have passed but I cannot still get over the weakness I have for fairytales. "Beauty of the Beast" is a retelling of the original one missing the talking objects but without lacking the magic of love.
Prince Adam has lost everything; his family, his innocence and the will to truly live. Isolated from the world, he survives in a dark castle with his only companion his loyal dog. Haunted by nightmares and scarred to his body and his soul, he lives in a world of darkness until a beautiful girl fills him with light.
Isabelle might be poor but her heart is full of tenderness and kindness. Running away from an evil man who is disguised behind a handsome exterior, she finds shelter into a castle owned by a beast. She is frightened by the disfigured man but some part of herself is intrigued by the haunted man.
Isabelle gives hope and comfort to Adam and he gives her protection and everything she desires. Slowly, they start to trust each other and their attraction and love burns quietly until it bursts.
Isabelle is a woman confident, strong and likeable. Adam though is the one that steals the show. He is a man caring, sensitive and protective. His love shines and the way he gives it wholeheartedly to her is endearing.
I liked their story but I have to say it is a slow burn romance. I would have liked to see them closer and as a couple a little sooner. There are sexual scenes , but they are limited and I missed their deeper connection throughout the story.
The writing is good but as it is a historical book, the story is a little bit more descriptive and repetitive for my taste. Despite that, I read it in one sitting as it is an interesting one. Also, I have to say that the beginning of this story is really powerful and heartbreaking and the epilogue sweet and hopeful.
If you like fairytales edgier and darker but with the pace of an original one, you can try this one! This author is new to me but I will gladly read her next story based on another fairytale.

"Everything inside these walls is mine."

As Beauty and the Beast re-tellings go, this one had elements that reminded me strongly of both the Disney version and the fairy tale I read as a child. It was also decidedly non-paranormal, as the beast is a flesh and blood man, damaged by burns and in need of anger-management classes to control his temper. That is if anger management classes were a thing in the 1830s.

Set in a region of France, referencing real places like Paris, Ruille and Lavoncourt, Demeter has built a fictitious royal family into the fabric of the time, using the French Revolution as a departure point for violence. The novel opens as 11-year-old Prince Adam Delacroix is awakened by a raging fire in the palace. Eventually, he becomes the recluse who refuses the barest of courtesies to traveling Isabelle Rose and her ailing father. Demeter does an excellent job filling the creepy palace with shadows and despair, resulting in an overarching Gothic tone. Add in the erratic behavior of a deeply scarred giant of a man, and Isabelle has every right to feel intimidated, where her defense is to retreat to numbness. Eventually, though, her innate curiosity reemerges, and she proves she has compassion and the "stomach" to pull Adam into the light. And then his uncontrolled temper drags them back into darkness. "A beast who's drowning in the waters of a past life."

There are moments of stillness and wonder in this book, such as the times dedicated to music and Isabelle's reaction to the manor library. There are also moments of violence and intimidation. The villain, a debauched minor noble, is dangerous in his indulgence and greed. However, the length of time it takes for Adam to unburden himself hampers the forward progress of the book. While I found numerous passages beautiful and the departures from the traditional story interesting, I just wish it had all happened a little more quickly.

As I've stated before, I love fairytale retellings and BEAUTY OF THE BEAST was a good one. Prince Adam Delacroix has lived a life of solitude in a secluded castle for 25 years, ever since he witnessed the massacre of his family during the revolt. His solitary existence is disrupted when Isabelle and her sick father seek shelter from a storm. After what he perceives as a transgression against his hospitality, Adam locks her father away in the dungeon. And then we all kind of know what happens next. Kinda.

I like how the author took artistic license of the classic tale and spun her own twists and turns. There was no true magic here but real magic took place. The magic of love. Yeah, that does sound pretty corny, but it doesn't make it any less true. Adam was disfigured and no magic spell was going to change that, however, Isabelle was able to see beyond that to the beauty that was at the core of this man. It was wondrous to be able to watch them fall together. For years, Adam's heart was full of anger, bitterness and resentment. With Isabelle he was able to start replacing them with hope and love.

The short and sweet of it is this: the story was entertaining and heartwarming, as was to be expected; Prince Adam was most definitely swoon-worthy; Isabelle was almost child-like with a huge capacity for love; and I enjoyed this story immensely.

Beauty of the Beast is yet another retelling of the the classic Beauty and the Beast tale. It's a dark, sensual and haunting retelling. Adam is a pitiful, anguished creature. Isabelle is more than the classic beauty. Her strength has been forged in pain. She is a perfect match to Adam. There's a shadowy, gothic feel throughout the book. This is not a fluffy fairytale. The author paints sexual, harsh, yet beautiful pictures with her words. It's the kind of story that you want to keep reading, yet at the same time, you just want it end before you start bawling again. This a true love story but with a convoluted and frightening path. Isabelle is one of my favorite heroines of all time. The author fleshes out her personality and reels you in. I love Adam because she loves Adam. Twists and turns throughout the story make for an engaging and tantalizing read. Memorable characters keep the reader on an emotional roller-coaster. I will be looking for books by this author. Her writing style is fascinating and works well with this darker retelling of a well known tale. I hope she does more like it.

Adam is a scarred recluse with little humanity left in him. When he makes a bargain with Isabelle Rose to free her father, his bleak existence is about to change forever. But Isabelle knows about monsters and Adam may not be the worst.

From the very first page, I was completely taken in by this tale. Spellbound may be a pun, but a very appropriate one in this case. I could not put the book down until I read it from the front cover to the back.

Adam Delacroix grows up to be a beast, but not one made by magic. His beastliness is entirely man-made, starting from the most tender age of 11. He is horrifically scarred, inside and out, by the devastation of his family. From the crumbling, smoldering ruins of his life, he finds a veritable castle-cave and hides away from the world. He expects to live out the rest of his days alone, but Isabelle Rose stumbles across his door and everything changes for him.

Isabelle is the town beauty, as we all know she would be. But the town "prince" is not only devastatingly handsome and self-centered, he is predatory and vicious. He torments Isabelle, forcing her to endure unspeakable things. And she does. She feels desperate for his financial help to care for her ailing father, and so she resigns herself to a lifetime of unhappiness with her tormentor. Then one day an idea hatches in her mind to orchestrate her escape with her father. A fresh start. She jumps at the chance, but nothing turns out the way she plans.

The start of Adam and Isabelle's relationship is awful. Terrible is not a harsh enough word. But what else is there for Isabelle to do but endure as she has always expected to? The fondness and ultimately love that grows between them is remarkable to read. The story is so compelling, so good, it is such a great read. Having raced through it at breakneck speed the first time, I look forward to a long weekend where I can read it again, and savor it.

This story was nothing that I expected and everything that I didn't know that I would love!! Obviously by the title, this is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast. The stories are similar, however Beauty of The Beast takes a darker and edgier road than the classic movie.
The writing was beautiful and even though there were no singing or talking objects like clocks, candlesticks and teapots, it had its own unique quality of magic. I wasn't sure what to expect going into this book and I was impressed. It wasn't only captivating, but beautiful and dark and left me turning page for page and losing a sense of time.
This is the first book by Rachel, and I loved it! I would love to read future works of hers, especially in this series of Fairy Tale retellings!
