Romantic comedies can be a dime-a-dozen, but this one has really stood out. the way it was written in all emails was great for getting all the characters points of view firsthand. This is the first laugh-out-loud funny book i've read in a while. I loved the way the super model wrote emails in the same way as the little girls. Also, many books of this genre throw in a twist like the attempted murder of the elderly neighbor at the end, unexpectedly, but Cabot had this going from the beginning with common references to the transvestite killer and the way John was snooping around with the cops. This was very well written, and Cabot did an excellent job dishing out all the details through the emails. I loved this book

I adored this book. It was funny, fresh, and entertaining. It is the very definition of CHICK LIT. Meggin Cabot is a talented writer. I loved all the characters in her book - except Max. You'll understand what I mean when you read it. The "boy and girl" that are trying to get together are so right for each other. I usually don't like a lot of romance in mainstream fiction, but this was the exception because it was so well done.

"The Boy Next Door" by Meggin Cabot is truly clever and different from anything else I have read. It's all done by email and I think gives it something catchy. I was a little confused at the beginning (keeping who straight) but I quickly got into a rhythm and it was a very enjoyable story.
With a mix of romance, murder-mystery, chick lit and diary'esque feel to it, I think that Cabot has stumbled into a new genre and I really liked it. It's not a difficult book - it's not War and Peace, but it's fun!! Very sweet and charming.

Finished this one in about 2 days. Great dialog and humor projected solely through email messages between work and family acquaintances. The love story worked well. HOWEVER there seemed to be a major problem with the plot. Why would Max choose John who he knew was a Criminal Reporter to fill in and impersonate him? Wouldn't John be the last person on earth Max should have chosen to help him out? Book never mentions why the police didn't bother to question or talk to John (the fake Max)while he was living in the Grandma's apartment.
There were times towards the end of the book when Mel, the lead character majorly got on my nerves. I started to root for her to get fired. Forty-nine tardies...please, what boss would put up with that? Also the emails between Mel and her parents were really boring. I ended up skipping those all together towards the end. Still I liked the book and would recommend reading it. Loved the humor and still found myself absorbed in the book.

The plot of The Boy Next Door was fabulous. Unfortunately, the enjoyability of the book was marred slightly by the format, which was entirely email correspondence. Though this format was unique and made the book move quickly, it felt choppy and incomplete at times. Overall though, this is a very fun, easy read, and I would recommend it if you like Meg Cabot's work.

The Boy Next Door was awesome! After reading All American Girl I had fallen in love with Meggin Cabot. The characters in this book grab your attention from the second you start reading it. Mel is a gossip columnist who has recently been confronted with a situation. She found her neighbor unconscious in her apartment. Mel e-mail's her neighbors only living relative, Max Friedlanderand, and informs him that his aunt is in a coma and he should come see her immediately. Mel has been taking care of her dog, which has caused conflict with her job. Max, however, is a little tied up. He asks his old college buddy ,John, to do him an owed favor,go to N.Y. and pretending to be Max, while taking care of the dog. Now Mel and John will be temporary neighbors and begin to form and interesting relationship. This book has the perfect amount of romance, mystery and comedy a great book needs.

This is a cute & funny selection from Kelly Ripa's book club. It's fun and easy to read - the fast-paced story will keep you intrigued at all times. The unique part about this book is that it is written in all email format - I found this to be a nice break from the norm and such a timely concept! The story and characters still come through loud & clear this way!

...and Shamela because Mel is taking us straight into the 21st Century. The "letter" based novels of the 18th Century have been completely updated with Meggin Cabot's debut into Adult Comtemporary Fiction. By telling the story completely through e-mail, the reader truly gets inside the characters' heads. I laughed aloud several times, devouring page after page of this brilliant book that I couldn't put down. The characters are very real, and their voices ring true. The last time I had so much fun reading someone else's "mail" were with Nick Bantock's books. "The Boy Next Door" is the must read book I will be telling all my friends about this Christmas. Thank you, Meggin Cabot, for making reading such a joy.

I thought this book was highly entertaining. I really enjoyed it. I'd read 2 of the Princess Diaries books and thought if I liked those, I'd like a more adult Meg Cabbot book. I was right! She did a really good job of telling a complete story using emails even when you'd think some things would be missing! A really good vacation book!

Definitely a book for a die hard romantic... I'm not sure if I would have enjoyed the story more or less if it had been written in the "regular" way. The emails made it very different than most romances that are out there today. So, if you're getting a little bored with the same old stuff, you should try this one out.

While searching online for another book to purchase I came across `The Boy Next Door' which isn't really on my prefer list considering I'm into Mystery/Thrillers and True Crime books. But after hearing that it was all in e-mail format I thought I'd give it a try. I bought the book and wasn't disappointed. It was actually a nice escape from all the dark gloomy stories I usually read. It was sure entertaining and it didn't take me long to finish reading. I love the character of Mel and I enjoyed how the story unfolds. I recommend this book to anyone who wants a couple of laughs and wants to try something different you won't be disappointed.

This is one of the most fun and entertaining books I've read in a long time. It had everything. It was fast-paced, easy to read, hysterical, and kept me wanting to read more. Yet, ironically, I didn't want it to end. I wanted the book to last forever. I can't wait to read more of Cabot's books.

Meg Cabot did not disappoint me with this book. I've read Boy Meets Girl, and while I think this one was not as good, it was still good.
Funny, sarcastic, and suspenseful (if a chick-lit could be suspenseful) and really sweet. If you love Meg Cabot, you will love this.

Absolutely LOVED this book.. the format was so fun and unique - it was all emails! It was SO easy to read this in a day! The plot was funny, and easy to follow, and the character development was great. I'd highly reccommend this if you like a good romance with LOTS of comedy thrown in the mix and a little mystery for good measure.

Okay..so my previous review was written before I had finished the book! I still feel strongly about the author's lack of e-mail format knowledge but my goodness the book is awesome! I LOVE it! I'm so in love with John it's crazy! Mel actually drove me crazy being so mad at him for so long, but I'm not going to say anything else cause I don't like when people give things away in books! But anyway..seriously, not a waste of money! Go buy this book!!!

Like all Meg Cabot books, this was another enjoyable, quick read. But I especially liked the format of emails that she used in this book. It managed to keep it from getting boring, and was also a good way to find out what all the different characters were really thinking. I will definitely reccomend this book to my friends, even to the ones that don't really like to read!

Meggin Cabot shows her creativity when she writes this novel using only emails between characters. It's hilarious and extremely tounge-in-cheek at times. I enjoyed this style of writing and I'll certainly be checking out this author's other works!

My roommate loaned me this book after she finished reading it. I have to admit that I was a little apprehensive at first but I'm so glad I got over that feeling. It had me hooked with the first few pages. I'm an avid reader and I can't wait to buy the next book written by Ms. Cabot...

The Boy Next Door is just another chick-lit novel, a genre I am not a fan of, but I wanted to read something light and romantic for a change. The only thing that separates this book from many, many other similar novels is that it's written entirely as emails sent between the main characters. It is an annoying gimmick, but the author does a fair job of making it work, despite the fact that most people would (hopefully) never dish about their sex life using their company email address. This book is completely predictable and pretty much a complete waste of time. Cabot should stick to writing Young Adult novels. If you want a QUALITY romantic read, I recommend either Bridget Jones Diary or Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.

This book has its share of cute and humorous moments, but in my opinion it was at least 75 pages too long. Since the plot isn't exactly hard to figure out and the writing isn't exactly Pulitzer-worthy, I found myself skimming through the last 1/3 of the book. At that point I was over the humor and banter between the characters and I just wanted it to end already.

This novel tells an excellent story of romance, friendship, truth, and lies all through internet correspondance, completely by email. Another masterpiece by Meggin Cabot. It shows the realationships between lovers, friends, coworkers, family members, etc. I loved this novel. I read all 374 pages in one night. It was awesome.

This book was sooooooooooo good! I loved it. I gave it 4 stars because parts of it were kinda boring, but when it wasn't boing it was very exciting. It's all about this girl who falls in love with the guy who lives next door, but he is pretending to be someone else. How will this story unfold? Well, you'll just have to read it to find out.

THE BOY NEXT DOOR

The book The Boy Next Door is a book about a young woman named Melissa Fuller, who works for a newspaper called the New York Journal as a gossip columnist who is having some trouble in her social life. Her current boyfriend just told her that he cheated on her, so she's having a bad time. She dumped him and she is now convinced that she'll never find a good person. Then she goes over to her 80-year-old neighbor's house and finds that poor Mrs. Friedlander (the neighbor) had been struck on the head and was in a coma. Mel calls up Max Friedlander, Mrs. Friedlander's only living relative, so he can take care of his auntie's cats. (Tweedledum, Mr. Peepers, and her dog, Paco Tweedledee died) Max doesn't want to go so he tells his friend John Trent to pretend to be him until Mrs. Friedlander gets better, since John owes Max a favor. John goes and he fell in love with Mel and Mel fell in love with him too.
So far I don't really like this book because it is sort of dumb. It is only a book full of emails that the people write to each other. Half the time they jump from subject to subject without any transition in between. Like these 2 emails that are in the book (one after another):
To: Mel Fuller < [email protected] >
From: Nadine Wilcock < [email protected] >
Subject: Fine. Go out with him. See if I care.
But I want a full report the minute you get back. Understand?
And I am warning you, Mel, if this guy breaks your heart and you are mopey for my wedding, I will personally kill both him and you.

You're writing a novel now? You've shed the shackles of the family fortune, you're leading a double life, you're leading a double life, you're trying to solve the mystery behind the old lady's assault, and you're writing a novel?
Who do you think you are anyway? Bruce Wayne?

My favorite part was the names Mrs. Friedlander gives her cats. Nobody in their right mind would name their cats Tweedledee and Tweedledum, or even Mr. Peepers.
