Excellent text on the many breeds of chickens and other poultry . There are many breeds of chickens on our earth especially because of the ease of cross breeding but using this guide one can see the different breeds in your own poultry .

This is the most comprehensive book of information and pictures. They pictures are outstanding and have helped me make my choices for next year when I add to my petting zoo. Excellent book and I plan on getting the sheep and goat one next.

Excellent pictures of many common poultry breeds. Best collection I have seen. However, there is very limited information on the breeds. I raise chickens (which is the majority of the book naturally) and was interested in comparing cahracteristics of the breeds, but it did not help at all.

Storey's Illustrated Guide to Poultry Breeds is a beautifully written book with wonderful pictures that are vibrant and beautiful on every page. I especially love how much attention to detail the author gave to the book by insuring that any and all photos had a description of what you are looking at even if its just a small head shot photo. I love how in the beginning of the book the author went into the detail of DNA and how genes can affect the outcome of the offspring. While it is a lot of information in just a short chapter, it is thorough and I had no problem understanding and following the scientific side of it, but I am also a biology major but from over 15 years ago. If anyone has had some science I believe it would make sense. I think she did a good job at being very descriptive as well about every bird and the background and history of the bird. The layout is so thorough too, it makes it very easy to look up a specific type and breed and read all about it without it being to much info or not enough. I also love how she puts in the reference page of every bird she talks about within a paragraph or sentence throughout the book. The pictures are beautiful and the layout of the book is a very nice read as well as making a nice table book. My only disappointment was I didn't get in hardbound. But the book is so nice I think I will spend the money to get it in hardbound if it is available.

This was first experience with a Storey's text and I will be searching for more! Beautiful photos abound and for anyone interested in poultry (primarily chickens) there is plenty of information regarding a variety of breeds.

The history and classifications of the birds are covered and makes for excellent trivia knowledge. As an avid chicken afficiando, this book has helped generate a new flock wish list!

I have no regrets after purchasing this book. It was very easy to read and understand, contained excellent images, and covered some very fascinating poultry breeds from the mundane to the exotic. The index of bird coloration was very helpful. The chicken breeds are separated into 3 categories (laying breeds, meat breeds and ornamental breeds), which I find is a nice touch. It does have some limited information on birds such as peafowl, ostriches, swans, etc. but its main focuses were chickens, geese, ducks and turkeys. I'm sure that any poultry enthusiast would enjoy this book.

I am writing a fiction book about chickens. After reviewing several reference books from the library, this one stands alone as the MUST HAVE. I'm ordering a copy for myself for more research to finish the manuscript and for the sheer pleasure of reading about these fascinating species.

Nicely done book. Carol Ekarius did a good job illuminating potential and current poultry fanciers and enthusiasts on poultry with a guide on different breeds and their qualities. It is a good coffee table book which will entertain most who open the pages, as with all Storey books.

The photographs are the best thing, in my opinion. Unlike many poultry guides with line drawing and a few photos, pretty much all the birds in here have at least one photo. You know the old saying, a picture is worth a thousand words. A photo even more.

I suggest everyone who buys a copy buy an extra one and donate it to your local library. Why not, maybe a library of an old folks home! I am sure it will bring back fond memories for many of them.

I just recently moved to Pennsylvania, and decided to raise chickens.. and I wasn't completey sure why many chicken books have illustrated photos and not photographs.... but this book does. and many, the glossy pages, detailed photos and indepth descriptions make it a good collection for anyone interested in domestic birds.

I found the book helpful in identifying feather and colours in chickens. I did learn some background information on breeds I had not known. Unfortunately the book is very American based and I live in Australia. Most of my flock are not identified in the book which was a shame as I wanted to learn more. I loved the illustrations which I was able to link to my hens.

Excellent breed descriptions with mutiple pictures of most to show color variations. Tells you who's on the endangered list and how many eggs to expect over a year. Which are the best broodys and which won't sit at all. Wish I'd had this before I began my backyard flock.

Overall just an okay book; more informative books are available about poultry breeds & avian species; nice photographs, however, this book would have been much better & more handy if it were published as a small 6" x 8" size field-guide; having made this such a big & bulky book was unnessary & a distractor for practical use of this publication!
