Over the past two years, I've managed to collect every volume of the Discworld Series and a number of books that Terry Pratchett has worked on.
Why?
Terry Pratchett has produced an array of books that have consistently floored me with their thoughtful insights, hilarious situations, and wonderful characters.
All that I have lacked has been a vision.
Thanks to Paul Kidby, I now have it. The illustrations for this story are wonderful. And the story is fantastic.
The book involves a large number of characters from Terry's world, so it might not be the best starting point for novices. But man, is it pretty. Well worth the price for fans of the series.

This installation of the classic DISCWORLD series features Rincewind, Carrot, Leonard De Quirm and The Silver Horde as Cohen the barbarian (and friends) decide to return something special to the Gods. Moreover, in this illustrated book, the illustrations actually do add to the book and are like something out of a fantasy art book.
While maybe not "the best" discworld book out there, I feel that this is still in the upper echelon of the reluctant series.
If you are new to the series, you may want to read "Interesting Times" and "Guards Guards" first as these will give you a bit more background. However, being new, it may be helpful for you to actually see some of the players in the drama via the illustrations. It's hard to go wrong with a discworld book.
In conclusion, this is a funny book which provides a great diversion from the real (ie round) world. Only Mr Pratchett
can turn a line like, "Houston, we have a problem" into "Ankh-Morpork, we have an orangutan."
Enjoy! and happy reading.

This book is about how the Jewish people in World War 2 escaped from Denmark to Sweeden. Annemarie and the Johansen's have Jewish friends named the Rosen's. Elllen is Annemarie's best friend. One day the Rosen's go to the synagogue (a Jewish worship place). There they find out that they were on a list to go to a concentration camp. If you want to find out what happens next read it yourself.

This book is an excellent book for children to read at a library. In the beginning of the book, it was a little boring. In the middle of the book, it was okey. But then when you get to the end of the story, it starts to get interesting because you will find out what happened in the story. I also enjoyed this book because of the names of the characters. That is why I give this book five stars.

Denmark Disaster

What would you do if you were a little Danish girl who had to save your

best friend and others? Would you cry and say you just couldn't do it or be brave

and rise to the occasion like little Annemarie Johansen? Annemarie Johansen is

the main character in the historical fiction novel Number the Stars by Lois Lowry.

With her younger sister Kirsti, and her best friend Ellen, they live in the

world of war during the 1940s in Denmark, and often try to escape the horrid

place by playing dolls and eventually taking a trip into the country where they

soon discover that life is not always the fairest place, and that taking risks is the

only way to stay alive and maintain your freedom.

Number the Stars is a fantastic tale of friendships, hardships, and finding

the truth. Lowry practically makes the story come alive around you. The story

literally unfolds right in front of your eyes. While reading this you feel as if Lowry

has given you a one way ticket into Denmark, allowing you to see Annemarie,

Ellen, and Kirsti walking home from school and visiting the country to see

Annemarie and Kirsti's Uncle.

Number the Stars is an exciting, creative, and moving novel. I recommend

this incredible book to girls between the ages of 10-13 who love to go back in

time and relive the lives of others with them.

This book is about when the German soldiers are everywhere in Denmark. The main character is Annemarie Johanson and her best friend is Ellen Rosen. Since Ellen Rosen is Jewish she must hide with the Johanson's pretending to be Annmarie's dead sisiter so the soldiers will not take her away. There is more to the story and to find out you must read it! This is a book that you can't put down!

One of my favorite books is Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. It's a realistic fiction book and full of adventure and suspense. It's about a brave girl who has to help her family lead Jewish people to freedom in Sweden. My favorite character is Peter Nielsen because he's very brave and determined. If you like suspenseful books, and are about 10 or over, read this book.

This is a great book because it is suspenseful. It was a little slow at first, but after the first few chapters you won't be able to put it down. We liked it when the soldiers raided the apartment looking for the Rosen family, and when Annemarie rips the necklace off Ellen. It is also exciting to find out what happens in the forest. This has become a favorite in our classroom!

Number The Stars by Lois Lowry is an all around downright excellent book. You learn how AnneMarie,a young girl in Denmark during World War Two, finds her feet and stands up to what's right. In the end, AnneMarie must do something she's never done before, and there's no backing out. You learn about the trauma of the War, and the strength that you can find by believing in yourself.

I rate this book 5 stars because it was very well written, and the suspense that Lois Lowry used made you want to read the next chapter, but you know you're not allowed to. I couldn't even put it down! Also, all throughout this book Lois Lowry makes you wonder and finally, at the end of the book, she answers all your questions. Read this book! I guarantee you'll love it!

What a fabulous, fabulous book! Not only is it another wonderful yarn by Mr. Pratchett, but it is filled with absolutely WONDERFUL art that is at times stunning, and at other times very humorous.
For fans of Mr. Pratchett's other novels, there are numerous walk-ins by his other famous characters, which only adds to the fun. The story is original, though obviously satyrizing numerous greek myths.
I cannot recommend this book enough, it is an absolute delight.

I am a great fan of Terry Pratchet , especially of his Discworld series. That is to say that my opinion is a touch biased in his favour. However, I found 'The Last Hero" to be the ultimate beach side reading, especially when one contemplates about the "follies' of her/his youth.

Mind you that I enjoyed the book sprawled in the sands of Antiparos ( a tiny Cyclades island next to Paros - just google it)and even if someone considers it "mass written- just another one Discworld novel" , it makes you take a good look at your potentials. Because gods , any gods, are nothing but our conceptions and therefore they are liable to regular updated versions of their faiths.

I hore that you will enjoy it.

I enjoyed reading The Last Hero as much as any of the other Discworld books. Which is to say, "A lot!" The characters are as vivacious as ever and the plot is just as twisted (pun intended) as any I've seen in this series. The only negative aspect of this book is the artwork. Not that the pictures aren't very well done: they are very entertaining. I guess I've just become set in my ways and prefer my imagination to make the imagery. I felt like the characters lost a bit of their appeal to me when I saw them as portrayed by another person, even if Paul Kidby is a talented artist. I would recommend that anyone who has enjoyed Discworld books before should read this one without paying too much attention to the artwork. After you finish the story, go back and enjoy all the fascinating pictures. It'll be like getting a second book free.

I liked the book because, even though the characters didn't seem realthe book was exciting. It makes you feel what the characters are feeling. It also shows just how brave one little girl can be. I must admit that when I first saw this book I thought "Graphic Novel? Ugh" thinking that it would be little more than a cartoon strip effort - I was very very wrong...
From page one the as ever brilliant illustrations by Kirby help bring the Discworld to life like never before, from the highly amusing drawings of Rincewind (so that's what he looks like!) to the not-so-subtle Cistene(?)-Chappel-like background picture of Cohen and Blind Io.
As for the story, after going off the boil a bit in some of his later books, Pratchett manages to keep his 'revival' of highly amusing and intelligent Discworld stories well on track with this latest effort.
All I can say without giving away the story is that anyone who DOESNT buy this cannot call him(her)self a true Discworld fan!

because I thought it was overpriced for its length. However, my oldest son bought it for me for Christmas, and I may just have to leave my entire estate to him as a result. It's a marvelous book, albeit short, but the illustrations more than make up for the brevity of the tale. Leonard of Quirm's Mona, the many species of swamp dragon, the flying ship, the view of the elephant head rising over the moon -- it's all wonderful. The story brings together all elements of the series except the witches of Lancre and even adds a minstrel, whose character development adds meat to the stew. I agree with one other reviewer on an important point, however: how could you leave the luggage behind?!!!!

In Number the Stars my favorite part in the book would have to be when the soldiers caught AnneMarie in the woods with the bag that she needed to give Uncle Henrick. In the bag was a drug that ruins the dog's sense of smell when they were trying to find all of the Jews on the boats. Uncle Henrick is a fisherman helping the Jews escape to Sweden. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in World War II. If I rated this book 1 through 5, I would rate it a 3 because I for one am not that interested in World War II.

This is a wonderful book full of amazing illustrations. Leonardo da Quirm's sketches are amazingly detailed and the characters appeared just as I imagined them to be. Any one who has read 'The Pratchett Portfolio', also illustrated by Kidby, will be delighted to _see_ the charaters in action.
The story, while shorter then most of Pratchett's novels, is still highly enjoyable. I love it when characters from different novels have a chance to meet with each other, and the interactions between Rincewind, Captain Carrot, Leonard and Cohen are great.
A must have for every Pratchett fan :)

This was something of a surprise to me. I knew that Pratchett was beginning to get bored of the Discworld novels, but there was little way that he could just drop them; I expected some sort of departure for the series, but this was a little more radical than i expected. It's fantastic though- a shorter, but just as impactful, storyline, backed up by some of the most amazing fantasy artwork I have ever seen, almost remeniscent of the original, hardback version of Eric. Inevitably, however, this is a supliment to the canon, but not a replacement to the old-fashioned novels. An excellent one-off, and hopefully someday a collector's item, but I hope this will not be what the future holds for the Disc.

Number the Stars is a book about two ten year old girls living in Copenhagen, Denmark in the midst of World War II. Annemarie and Ellen must find the strength and courage to survive. With Natzis at every turn, they must be careful. This is a great book and it is hard to put down. I reccomend this to anyone who wants to learn about the holocost.

This is Pratchett's best work since 'Interesting Times'. This one includes an all star cast of: Rincewind, Cohen the Barbarian, Captain Carrot and a host of supporting characters including,of course, Death. The art by Paul Kidby is truly wonderful. I can't imagine reading this without the great artwork. The art complements the story perfectly. It's Beautiful!
The reason I gave 'The Last Hero' four and not five stars is because it is woefully short. You can read this in a day. I suggest that you savor the art while reading this so that it lasts longer. Other than the length, the book is near perfect.
A collector's item for all Discworld fans!

If you're a fan of Terry Pratchett's Discworld, you absolutely must read this book. It's chock full of great Discworld characters like Rincewind, Cohen the Barbarian, DEATH, Captain Carrot, the Librarian and The Luggage. The illustrations are fantastic and add quite a bit to the humor.

Terry Pratchett's first illustrated story is a wonderful work of art. If you're a Terry Pratchett fan, then this book is absolutely necessary and you will enjoy it immensely. If you have never read any Pratchett before, I would recommend an earlier work to get involved in the stories (yes, plural) of Discworld before getting this illustrated volume. Besides, the wonderful illustrations actually confirms one's mental images of all of the subjects that are illustrated, which adds to your enjoyment if you already have a mental picture.

The Last Hero was everything I was hoping for in Paul Kidby's illustration. If you're a Diskworld fan, the story explores the gods and Leonard of Quirm in much more depth than I think they've ever been in the novels. The illustrative style of the book realy becomes the only way to view Leonard, and his way of thinking and creating. Aside from the character art and exploration, the book evokes a true sense of awe for an imaginary world that inspires wonder in our own.

For someone unfamiliar with Terry Pratchett's novels, it is a marvelous introduction to his Discworld. Technically, it is fantasy, but in truth you won't find more realistic characters in any other author's books.
And, long time Pratchett fans will marvel at the quality of the writing and the splendid illustrations.

I had to read Number the Stars for school. Most of the kids didn't like it, but I thought it was pretty good. While I was reading I really felt like I was tasting the bitter October morning air!(And no, I wasn't reading it outside in October!!) If you like Terry Pratchett this book is a must have. Period. The story is excelent, but the art is amazing. There is a picture on almost every page as well; the characters appear just as I've always imagined them. As much as I love Terry Pratchett's work, Paul Kidby's art is the reason why I keep coming back to this book again and again. He in part inspired me to become an illustrator, and I'm very glad he's had the distinction of bringing the Disc's characters to life.

This would also be a great book to introduce a wary friend to the series!

When I first read Number The Stars I suspected it would be about a girl who was living in Denmark during the Nazi occupation. I never would guess that Annemarie's friend would be Jewish. This is such a great book and I recommend that you borrow or buy it. This book's message is you must be brave no matter how scared that you are. It also informs you on how horrible things were during World War 2. This was my favorite line in my interpretation: Annemarie took the necklace in her hand and sigh "until then", she said to herself," I will wear it myself."

The End

I'm an 11 year old girl and have read Number the Stars several times. It's a good, accurate book, but I've kind of already outgrown it. I can't relate much to the main character anymore, because she seems so young and clueless.

Bare in mind that most folks reviewing this book are die-hard Pratchett fanatics, the types who will pay a lot of money for a 167 page coffee-table book. If you witlessly love anything Discworldian then you do not need reviews; you will adore this book. If you like, rather than worship, the excellent writing that Terry Pratchett is capable of then you will be seriously disappointed with The Last Hero. This is the sort of substandard (compared to the usually high standards of Discworld novels) work that inspires conspiracy theories. Perhaps the pod-people have taken over Pratchett's body and are trying to pass as him. Or an obsessive fan has written a Discworld book and palmed it off as the real thing. Terry Pratchett is indeed one of the best satirists currently in print; it is a shame that he now seems to be writing fake versions of his oun style.

The book I read was Number The Stars. It's about the Nazi's taking over Denmark and Germany. I believe that it's a very interesting book. It's not that great in the beginning, but once you get into it you cannot stop reading it. I would recommend everybody to read this book, because it's awesome, and amazing.

I love this book even though I haven't finished it yet. NUMBER THE STARS is about a girl named Annemarie and her Jewish friend Ellen. This novel is set in Denmark during WWII. I won't tell you what happens, but I will tell you that the Jews are under attack. I also reccomend reading the children's book THE YELLOW STAR for more WWII info.

Number the stars is a funny, adventurous and very sad. Annemaries sister Kirsti is the funny one while Annemarie is Dramtic. The Nazi's are trying to take over the Jewish people. Annemaries friend Ellen is Jewish so she is staying with Annemarie. I think you would like this book.

I think that Number The Stars is the best book I ever read! It is very suspenseful, happy, sad and funny. The best part was the part with the handkerchief. If you want to know what I are talking about, read this wonderful book, Number The Stars. ;)

This story is not as long as most discworld novels and it is not his best story, but it is in the typical Pratchett style. I enjoyed it (3 stars). The fantastic illustrations are worth a 4th star. You should have it in your Pratchett collection.

"The Last Hero: A Discworld Fable", is a basically Discworld novella by Terry Pratchett that is lavishly illustrated by Paul Kidby, coming in at around 160 pages, about half of which are in large-font text which tells the story, and the other half are illustrations, character portraits, and other fun stuff.

Back in the 1980's, I discovered Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels not too long after he began publishing them, and I eagerly bought each new book as it was released. My favorite leading character was Rincewind, but as time went by, Mr Pratchett centered his books around other, different leading characters and poor Rincewood faded mostly away. Nothing wrong with that, as to a certain extent, Rincewind is pretty much a one-trick pony, and Mr Pratchett couldn't grow the Discworld universe around just one character, but I wasn't as interested in many of the newer characters. After about 20 or so books, I kind of lost interest in the series, but I've generally kept my eye out for any stories containing Rincewind in any significant degree. So, I was pleased to recently discover "The Last Hero".

The story focuses around the aged Cohen the Barbarian and his Silver Horde's attempt to return fire to the gods by delivering the Discworld equivalent of a nuclear bomb. Unknown to Cohen, this act basically would destroy Discworld. Cohen is old, and having basically beaten, robbed, or conquered everything on Discworld at one time or another, is bored and doesn't want to die of old age. He doesn't really believe he can beat the gods, though, and just wants to go out in a blaze of glory. However, Cohen being Cohen, he could potentially pull it off.

Various well-known characters and factions on the planet find out about Cohen's attempt, and band together to put a team forward to attempt to deflect Cohen from his purpose. (Rincewind, happily, is an involuntary part of the team.) The story is well written and entertaining, and the illustrations fit well with the text. My favorite illustration is of Verna the Ravenhaired, who basically looks like the kindly (but still deadly) grandmother she's become, but is dressed in chainmail and clutching a long, well-used sword.

I enjoyed the book and enjoyed re-visiting Discworld again after so long of an absence.

Number the stars was not the worst book but it was not the best. The author was Lois Lowry and Number the stars were published by Dell Yearling in 1989 and the lexile is 670. However this book won the National Jew award and the Newbery award. Some of the author previous books are All about Sam, Anastasia again, and Anastasia absolutely. Number the star is a historical fiction book you might like this book.

In the book Number the stars the mother get very upset because Annemarie talked to a Nazi solder and her friend was walking with her and her friend is a Jew. Annemarie thought there would never be a war but she was wrong. The war happened and the Nazis came and took Jews out of their houses. Annemarie and her family had to protect Annemarie's friend because she is a Jew. The father said to Annemarie's friend and her "everything will be alright." If you want to find out more read this book.

My thought of this book Number the stars it stunk. I lost in trust in the book. I did not like the style of the authors writing. I disliked the story line because it was not my kind of book because it did not make sense in the start of the book.

This book was confusing because it did not explain why the shoulder was standing in each corner of the streets. The weird thing is that there is a king that any one would take a bullet for him and Annemarie was telling her little sister a story and it when to the little sister and it said that she saw the king in the streets riding a horse. The most confusing thing was that the father was bossing around Annemarie to be a teacher because he was.

I thought this book was boring because there was not enough action and it was too girlish. I thought it was confusing because it said that a king was riding around the street. I lost in trust in the book because it was all over the place. I would recommend this book if you like to sleep and if you are a history nerd.

This book was O.K. I didn't like it that much but I didn't think it was the best book I ever read either.I rated it 1 star because I'm just not into those types of books.I did learn alot though about how ordinary people saved the lives of their friends.

This may be my favorite Discworld novel, so why only four stars? It's because of the paperback binding, frankly.

The Last Hero is a gorgeously written, lavishly illustrated, perfectly conceived and executed tale from start to finish, and once you've read it, you may want to read it again right away! At least I did. What I really wanted, though, was a hard-back copy that would do the tale justice. I still have not found one that was in my price range, so I make do with this one. The cover is heavy with nice paper, but the "glue bind" spine and the faux "cover folds" don't work quite as well as I'd hope in my heart-of-hearts.

Don't get me wrong! It's worth the price, and you'll love it if you like Discworld or myths at all. It's wonderful, magical, and it could possibly change your life (no guarantee on that, of course).

I hated this book but I had to read it for school! I had to make my self get through it! I would never recommend this book to anybody! It has horrible characters. You don't feel like you even know who the person is. DO NOT READ IT! It isn't even very exciting!
