I'm a relative newcomer to the Posie books within the last few months and devoured the first two in the series. With the 3rd and 4th being released simultaneously I wish that I could say I savored them but I read them both. What I really like is that this book has a different feel.from the others-a slightly more serious tone which makes it no less enjoyable. Without divulging too much, this book sees Posie looking back into her own painful past but also forward. The years between the wars in England is a time period that I enjoy and there are some very good fiction, and mystery authors, already writing. LB Hathaway's books are so well researched and her characters are honestly enjoyable. Posie is a great heroine in her own right and it was nice to finally get a little glimpse into the past to provide her with even more layers. I found the last page or so slightly implausible but it is not a stretch to think that real people at this time in history were dealimg with the ghosts of the Great War. It was a time of great changes and uncertainty but I admire Posie's pluck, fortitude, and penchant for sweets! I really like the tone of this book because it stands in a little more ontrast to the others. I think it also shows a versatility in writing style. Can't wait to read more Posie books. PS....I love that the author does not waste valuable time reintroducing characters book after book for folks who might not have read them in order. I don't think it's necessary to read them all in order but there's definitely been story progression with the characters and I would think others would find it more enjoyable to read them in order.

I like the Posie Parker series. It's not terribly sophisticated writing, but it's good writing. I like the characters and the writer makes me care about them. The plot interesting but again, not terribly new or surprising. However, it's a great read for pool, beach or plane.

The Vanishing of Dr. Winter (a Posie Parker Mystery)
by L. B. Hathaway

When a widow from her past as an army nurse hires feisty detective Posie Parker to find her dead husband, it's a little confusing and disconcerting, especially when her client asks, "Do you believe in ghosts?". The widow believes she has recently seen her husband in person though he supposedly has been dead for years. She wants to be sure it's not just wishful thinking on her part, and she can afford the rate, so Posie accepts the job. Dr. Winter is intertwined with Posie's brother Richard, whose questionable suicide she is already investigating. So, this gives her more reason to get involved. Much of the story takes place at Cambridge where Dr. Winter and Richard had both worked. Apparently, Dr. Winter had more than a few dark secrets, and Richard had one big one that he had not shared with Posie. If Dr. Winter is still in the area, why didn't he come back to his beautiful wife? With more questions surfacing regarding both these victims, Posie may be poking a hornets' nest and risks being swarmed by those who don't want their secrets to become public. She will also uncover something that will change her own life. There's a nice little mystical twist at the end. I love this series, and the 1920s era. Reminds me greatly of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries by Kerry Greenwood. *****Five Stars. ~Review by Sandy Penny, SweetMysteryBooks.com

I loved how this book brings Posie's WW1 experiences to the fore. This really gives an insight into how Posie became so independent and inquisitive. I love all the characters but I missed Richard Lovelace (the Inspector from Scotland Yard) he makes several appearances in the book but they (Parker & Lovelace) are not working together in the way we've come to enjoy. This story brings Posie to life with a depth of emotion and personal history. As I've said before the only thing wrong with the Posie Parker series is that there is not 100 of them! This would truly make a fabulous series on Masterpiece Mystery. They could bring the Edwardian era of glamour and contradiction to life as seen through Posie's eyes! Hmmm maybe someone from PBS or BBC will get this very subtle hint!
