I ordered this book for my grandsons who live out of town. As I have other grandchildren nearby, I like to keep my own, old copy around. I was disappointed in the lesser quality of the book's construction, the thin paper. My old copy made it through 4 kids and is about 35 yrs. old - still on decent shape. The story, of course, is still great and very much loved!

What a wonderful book for children and how many great memories! I can't even think of the title of this book without a grin plastered to my face. When I was very tiny and first learning to read aloud, I used to read this book to my younger brother. He found it riveting and it quickly became his favorite book and a nightly ritual to "read" the book. Ordinarily, no reading took place because the book was so simple to memorize. I can still recite the entire volume, cover to cover, almost thirty years later!
My brother now has two sons and the first present I bought for them was a spanking new copy of "Bears in the Night." The elder of the two has it commited to memory. Since the younger boy is only six months old, I'll give him a few more months until he has done the same!
Seriously, this book has a simple but attention grabbing plot where the kids are mischevious and sneak out of bed after dark. They go exploring and soon find that scary things lurk in the dark on the top of Spook Hill. Thankfully, they make their way home to safety. Somehow, you know that Mom was completely aware of what they were up to but knowingly let the children learn this lesson for themselves.

One of my favorite bear books! This is perfect for the little one because it has a picture that matches the text, it's short phrases, fun predicable pattern and it is very repetitive. This book will be one of the easiest books for your little one to learn how to read.

One of my favorite childhood memories is my grandmother reading us this book at bed. I had to get it for my daughter. She absolutely loves this book as well (while she did not take to others).
I love the brevity and rhythm, the pace and repetition kept her interested and helped her learn words (like window, bridge, rocks)... now sometimes when we are out for a walk and heading up the big hill I will say, "up spook hill, what's at the top?" and she will reply "owl whoooooo!"
This was the very first book I found her attempting to "read" herself. (at two)
Great to share a bit of my grandmother and a favorite memory with her.

This book is about these twelve little bears heard noises so they just ignored it.Well the second time they heard it the oldest one said to go out so they all did one by one. They went down the tree over the bridge and threw the woods alltogether.Next they climbed the old old spookey tree, they thought the whole time they heard the noises it was something spookey but it turned out just to be a slepping owl just hooing in the wind. So they ran back over the bridge where the water was and climbed back up the tree and in the window ,got under the covers and went to bed ssssshhhhhh.!

Definition of a classic: it never grows old. The bears will be an early read for the toddler. A simple vocabulary with enough action to keep the reader on task this chapter in the Berenstain bear sagas that has stood the test of time. A beginner's book ,for sure, but it will lead to many more bear stories.

I grew up learning many sight words from this book, and it belonged to my cousin before me! It was one of my favorites. I can still remember "Up Spook Hill..."

I am very excited to see this book still in print so that I can get it for my child, my copy is a little worn after many years in storage!

We had this book when our children were small. Our youngest boy had it memorized in short order and would correct his father if he left anything out while reading. Now our daughter asked for it for her new little boy. We bought it for him for Christmas. He has already listened to it several times (he is 9 1/2 mos old). We love the book.

My daughter is beginning to understand "between" "under" "out" and other prepositions from this book. The repetition helps reinforce concepts and it has the perfect amount of text on the page for an 18-month old. Plus, the pictures are really cute.

This book is beloved by young children for building up dread and suspense in

a safe environment -- with a happy-at-home climax. A reading is always

accompanied by bright eyed squeals, ohhhs, and shrieks.
