The writing is very good, but the storyline was a little bland. The mystery was good, but there was nothing for the main characters to overcome at the end. I did like the writing style and the characters though. This is my first book by Lincoln Child and I will definitely read another.

Lincoln Child is a good writer and keeps you engaged. However, on this book I think I set my expectations to high or this book was just not to par with his other books. An easy summer read with an interesting story line. The ending was a little less than what I would have hoped for.

I read all Preston and Child's books. Archeology is an unfullfilled love of mine so I'm an armchair adventurer. I was very disappointed in this story. It's Egypt (actually the Sudan) and I was expecting heat, sand, dryness. I got wet, dankness and unenjoyable story. I really didn't like it. Aside from my views, the writing was as good as usual in his books. Several times I was reading in anticipation and hurrying ahead to view the outcome of the situation but the story was not what I thought it would be, thus my disappointment.

Enjoyable fast paced novel. The story and pacing was similar to many of his other novels such as the Ice Limit and Mount Dragon. The ending was predictable but the characters were solid and the story moved quickly and enjoyably.

Certainly keeps your attention throughout but seems missing something. I think the author really could have developed the story and characters more. As such the ending felt very rushed. Four stars for an interesting story and characters but could have been such much more.

I enjoyed reading The Third Gate. It was an easy read and once I got into the book, it was difficult to put down. This is an interesting and easy weekend read. I always enjoy the historical back drops.

Typical Child submission......fast paced, believable characters, historic with liberal licence, and an ending that has you literally leaping over much text in a frenzied attempt to attain the finish.

In summary, difficult to put down even for a restroom break.

Child continues to outdo himself. This, to me, his best and they have all been remarkable reads. Do not simply read one of his works but all. Engaging, informative and enlightening, a thrill ride through every tome.

Lincoln Child is one of my favorite writers. Whether he teams with Douglas Preston or writes solo, the books are not to be ignored if you like good adventure novels. After reading "Thunderhead" I became an addict of the Preston and Child books. I believe "Third Gate" measures up!

I love this kind of fiction; the blending of history with the supernatural mystery. However this book, while good, lacked an appropriate pacing & follow through. The sad part is it was ripe for it.

I love all the Agent Pendergast novels by authors Preston and Child, but I had read them all twice. So I was looking for something by either of the authors that I hadn't read. Third Gate was awesome. If you love mysteries that include Eygptian tombs and mummies, here you go! It was fantastic.

Thin plot mixed with complex scenarios (near death exp's, archeological dig, Egyptian lore) and superficially developed characters. I have read most of the books by Lincoln Child and this was not up to previous standards.

I found The Third Gate very disappointing in comparison to Child’s other books. I didn’t find any of the characters relatable or even likable. Check this book out at the library rather than purchasing.

Having started on the Preston-Child Pendergast series, I was a little hesitant about the single author books, but no need to be. Lincoln wrote an excellent adventure! The audiobook came on time, was as advertised and I would order from this vendor again.

I was disappointed that there was too much set-up time and not enough action. The actual action occurred about 10 pages before the end of the book. Should have spent more time on the spooky aspect of the dig. But all in all it was a good book.

His books are entertaining, but they are getting too formulated. You can pretty much figure out what is going to happen because his other books have followed the same plot pattern. He needs to shake up his writing style with some new approaches. It was still an interesting read though.

I've read many of the Child ( stand alone author ) and the duo with Preston....3rd Gate did not let me down .....always enjoy reading their stuff and then go looking up to see if half of it is real....

Interesting from the standpoint of learning about Egyption History.
Some of the situations were very difficult to accept; incredible.
The story just seemed to run down leaving many unanswered questions.

I enjoy Lincoln Child's thrillers and his current book did not let me down. His standalone books seem to be of the science fiction genre while this one deals with ancient Egypt and Egyptian archaeology mixed with psychic mysticism and perception. I'm fascinated with ancient Egypt, and not particularly bothered by his employment of the "tried and true" curse of the tomb; these devices usually work for me and it's effective in this book. The psychic sensitivity of the novel's protagonist, Professor Jeremy Logan, an enigmalogist (an investigator of mysterious things not readily explained by rational means) when he's near the tomb makes for a suspenseful story. The plot is good but not great; the writing is clear and descriptive but not particularly praiseworthy. In short, this is a good book for the beach or a rainy weekend, but it's no "The Da Vinci Code".
