This book is an excellent resource for new dog owners to get off on the right start with their dogs. I have been breeding and training German Shepherds for over 15 years and this is the book I always ask my puppy buyers to purchase and read. I should say though that all dog owners show also take their dogs and pups to classes for socialization. The book is a very easy read and gives instructions that are very clear. It points out what your dog learned as a pup from its own mother and how you can use that to help you in your training. I highly recommend buying this book!

If you've ever wished you could speak with your dog in his own language, here's your chance. By emulating your dog's very first teacher...his mother...you can teach him gently and effectively in a way that he will understand at the deepest level. What makes this method particularly humane is the fact that your pup KNOWS what you are asking of him...no mixed signals, no misinterpretation, no fear or confusion. Doctor Dolittle, meet Carol Lea Benjamin! Highly recommended.

I'm a veterinarian and I recommend this book to all of my clients who have or are considering getting a new puppy/dog. I have also used the book to train 2 of my own dogs, one Shih tzu and one Dalmatian.
The book is straight forward and easy to understand. Topics are presented in an orderly fashion making it easy to go back and reference specific sections.
Overall, this is the best basic puppy/dog training book I have ever come across. I've even requested that our local bookstore keep it in stock.

I have used this book for years and love Carol Benjamin's approach to dog training. It is simple and set up step by step. Whenever anyone asked me about puppy training I always recommend this book. It seems to work with all breeds. I have Golden Retrievers and they have always responded well to this training method. I even have the link for this book on my own web site [...]

Best and most compassionate and loving book I've seen for training dogs, and actually, trains us humans more to know how to effectively work with them. Trained my dog solely by this book, and she learned very quickly, and from a place of love, not punishment or enticement by "treats". Best dog I've ever had! And the book is full of great humor!

I am a first time dog owner and had no idea how to narrow the vastness of dog/puppy training books down to one decent book. My breeder recommended this book to me. This book is fun to read, very easy to follow, very thorough, and takes you through the process in the correct order (so you don't have to read the entire book to begin your training!) An added bonus: the author has a great sense of humor.

I used this book to train my dog over 10 years ago. I enjoyed reading the book and it helped to make Chelsea one of the sweetest most well behaved dogs I know. This book is full of common-sense ideas for training your dog and it is so well written. If you're training a dog or you just love animals, this book is wonderful!

Use this informative book on dog training. I think it would also be useful on training, (teaching children!). Think how and where the animal comes from. Positive reinforcement and pack order gives your pet confidence and increases their desire to please. A must read for new and also seasoned pet owners.

I raised two dogs using techniques from this book (including one that came to me at two years old ! ). I have never had to raise a hand to them and people constantly comment on how they obey my voice. This is the one book I recommed to all new owners of dogs. A great investment !

I read this book in preparation for Doberman puppies. It was very useful in understanding the personality of dogs and their "packs". It shows you how to discipline your dog without breaking them. I would recommend this book highly!!

I have been a dog trainer for many years. This is one of two books that I suggest to my clients. So much common sense with a dash of humor. Easy to read and implement to your training program. Great book.

As a trainer of Assistance Dogs for persons with disabilities this book has been the foundation of my training methods and I have been using it since I started with my own pet dogs at the age of 15. It is very well written and the basic concept... WONDERFUL!

This book was reccomended to me by a Dog Trainer friend, and the 'waiting list' to borrow her book was so long, I decided to purchase my own because it must be a great book. So I am very much looking forward to reading it.

This just reads like it's outdated. Maybe it hasn't been updated in years, I don't know. For a better method look to Dog Whisperer titles. (No, I have NO connection with the D.W. titles! But I do know what works.)

Do yourself a favour and buy a book based on current scientifically based information, not old fashioned alpha wolf pack theory dog training techniques which are not backed by scientific fact or current behavioural research into dog behaviour

This book was a big disappointment. There's nothing new in the book. The concept of "Mother knows best" is just plain wrong. Teaching a dog has nothing to do with being a surrogate mother. The author keeps repeating herself without providing useful information. The whole book could be shortened to an insteresting article in a dog magazine. In its present form it is way too long. The author also contradicts herself many times. She emphasizes that learning should be fun for the dog and the owner, then on page 107 when she teaches SIT STAY she writes "He [The dog]understands that when you call him he must go to you and that if he doesn't, you will bore hime to death..." All in all, I would not recommend this book to any serious dog owner.
