I read a LOT of military sci-fi, and this is one of the very best I've come across in quite a while. The author combines a fairly unique plot, brings together surprising protagonists from multiple time-lines, adds a surprising "alien" twist, and fills the story with believable, 3-dimensional characters that I came to care about fairly quickly. I'm very much looking forward to the upcoming additions to the however-many-ogy this ends up being.

This is not sci-fi. This is an over the top detective novel with the stage set in the future with time travel across alternate time lines. This is a detective novel where the detective is not a private eye. Forbes over indulges the main character's thoughts and feelings as only a dime store detective novel can do. The narration makes this even more pronounced.

I rarely write reviews but was compelled to write now if for no other reason than to ask when is the next book in the series! I really enjoyed this book but feel totally left hanging - which is how a series book is supposed to make you feel. The author needs to get the next out asap. I want to know for sure if the speck he saw in the final scene is Schism. And who are Origin and why are they destroying humankind. The storyline's concept of time is difficult to wrap my brain around but works well in the book. I enjoyed all the characters a great deal.
Honor Among Enemies (Honor Harrington Book 6) :: At All Costs: Honor Harrington, Book 11 :: Treecat Wars (Honor Harrington - Star Kingdom Book 3) :: - Honor Harrington universe Book 3) - Cauldron of Ghosts (Crown of Slaves :: In Enemy Hands (Honor Harrington Book 7)

A good solid start to a series. I enjoyed the first half of the book more than the second half as the writer started to have flashbacks from more than our "hero" of the story. The action was tight and constant and the author gave the players in the story enough attention so that they weren't just cardboard cut-outs - we actually got to know them a little--Yaaayyy. As I said I enjoyed the flashbacks of the main protagonist but when you start to have more than one character doing this it does start to become a little irritating (well it did for me anyway). Apart from a few little things though, this was a good solid overall story and definitely worth the money.

A solidly good military sci-fi read. Also has some unexpected moments of emotional authenticity.

The protagonist is your bog-standard superhero, stronger, faster, more handsome, and just plain better than everyone else. Hard to identify with.

However, instead of staying on the expected rails of "superhero saves the galaxy," the plot takes some interesting twists. Definitely enough mystery and unanswered questions to keep me reading the series.

Well, this was fun. I wasn't too sure about the story in the first few pages. The interview segment seemed contrived. It must have been a difficult piece to construct. Tamara King is a stereotype. Mitchell Williams almost was. . . thinking with his nether parts early on. As the story progressed, however, Mitchell became a more complex character, as did his 'co-stars '.
Time travel is not really my favorite genre but the author has made this about more than that.
Definitely a worthy read.

I'm used to self-published books having lots of copy editing errors and, honestly, less than tight plots. I'm glad to say the Starship Eternal is as good as many traditionally published novels. The plot mostly holds together. I was able to suspend disbelief and enjoy the book. There was a battle in which the hero used an asteroid field as cover, which may follow TV and movie conventions but not a real solar system, which is much less dense than the one in the book. Otherwise, I liked it.

Wow!!!! This was a great story! I made the mistake of reading books 2 and 3 first, but was left a little baffled about things that had been in book 1, that I had no knowledge of. This is definitely a series that should be read in the proper order to totally appreciate the story. Anyone who likes military science fiction should love this series. I'm looking forward to the next book.

There were parts of this book where I'd actually go back and reread it which is okay, because that way I understood what was really going on. It was a good read, I enjoyed it, a second book would be good, I think this might even be an excellent trilogy.

The basic SciFi storyline of the series is decent, enough to keep a reader interested. The multiple writing inadequacies of the author-cartoonish characterizations, immature plot, juvenile approach to adult themes-coupled with poor editing and proofreading, seriously hampers the overall effort.

This story is enthralling. I love a self published novel which is properly edited, proofread, and not riddled with typos like so many others seem to be. This story has a lot of originality, and is filled with delightful twists and turns, and characters who entertain.

Being a science fiction addict I have read over 100 books so far this year. Space Opera with many books on the story lines is my preferred approach. This very captivating story has been one of the most enjoyable in a long time. I eagerly anticipate the next book in this group.

One style of writing that I find distasteful is flashback. Some authors use it as a plot device telling two tales at the same time. Mr. Forbes seems to be telling three possibly four separate tales concurrently using this methodology. The book is so chopped up in the first couple chapters that I couldn't get a hold on what was actually happening in the past let alone how many time lines were actually being described.

The protagonist is the ringer whose lover died heroically while he has to take credit for her actions due to politics. As you might think, this leads to the time honored and overly used persona of an alcoholic as the protagonist.

Overall, the book isn't for someone like me but I can see how it would intrigue/entertain someone quite well.

It's a good book but for some reason it took me awhile to finish it. There was something about the story that just seemed drawn out, as if the author was filling the pages. I've read many books between start and completion of this one.

Yet still I'm interested in where the story goes, so I'll try the next.

Ok, after reading many scifi/space exploration/military books on kindle unlimited this is the first I bothered to post on. I read through this is in a few quick days and really liked it for a few reasons.

The story isn't predictable as many books of this style are, and I was suprised several times as the characters/events unfolded (trying to not give anything away here).

I think the other difference and why I am writing this at all is the world/universe created by the author. I enjoyed that there were details about the technology/people/etc that were origional (to me at least ha) and flushed out- but it was done in a smooth way where the story kept moving rapidly. The last few books I read went way overboard on trying to explain every little detail at the expense of turning things boring and breaking up the flow of things. This book does not do that thankfully!

If I had anything to say, the main character is a bit too perfect. But really, in this style book you need that kind of person, because a super weak/flawed character would never survive here.

It really not fair for me to review this book. I didn't like the writing. The idea was interesting so I skimmed it and entire series because I was curious how he would end the book since... (oops, no spoilers)

I can't recommend it. But a lot of other folks liked the series, I recommend reading their comments.

Brain candy Military SF. The characters are excellent archetypes and the premise is as new as you can get in a "something bad is about to happen and only you can stop it" genre. Interesting enough that I'm into book 3 now, but not good enough to grant the coveted 5 star status.

Nothing terribly unique in this work but its a good mix of action, decent plot, and mostly coherent storyline. But the plot does involve time travel and frankly almost no one seems to be able to keep a coherent story together when time travel is involved. Character development is better than some of the other space opera type sci fi books out there but its not great. Interested to see how the next one in the series plays out.

After reading sci-fi for 40 years, the generic plots are easy to recognize and the interest becomes how the particular plot is developed. This took me completely and most pleasantly by surprise. It is unique, original, and thoroughly engrossing. I powered through it in about 5 hours because I couldn't stop. You should do likewise. It will reward you for the effort.

If your idea of hard science fiction is Futurama, you might like this book. I think the main character is modeled after Zapp Brannigan. I couldn't get any farther than 100 pages of this ridiculous space opera.

I have a lot on my plate and I'm very choosy about what I read, much less take time to rate. This was worth it. Life forms that shouldn't exist (and in my opinion some of the people shouldn't as well), and a plot where none of the characters gets a free pass to anything! A main character that is forced to pretend to be a hero, a lie he wants no part of, then a villain (a role he wants even less to be a part of), then just to even everything up things get ugly for everybody. My kind of story.

I liked the concept the book is predicated upon, but I am always troubled when people write a story were man is the only sentient life in the cosmos. That troubles me because the writer feels that man is special and I have never seen any particular evidence of that. We can't even take care of our own planet or country for that matter. The author needs to do some heavy duty proof reading that would make this book a much More enjoyable read.

Many unexpected turns and twists enjoyable from front to back page. I will be read the next in series with great anticipation! Get cliff hanger at the end but still managed to have a great ending so could be read as a stand alone, but I can't wait for more.

Liked the characters, a lot. They were interesting, and how the author introduced the main twist for the protagonist.
The whole time loop and its manipulation was tough to swallow. But the action kept going, so I kept reading. Will move to the next one, so worth the read.

I could not put this book down. Very good character and environment development but with a rather slow start for a scifi book. The use of cyber neural interfaces in current scifi is being over used in my opinion. Finally we get out into space with the obligatory FTL drive and things get very interesting very fast! This book has a very strong finish and of coarse has you waiting for the next book of the series.

I really enjoyed this book. It has it all. Sci/Fi really is my favorite. I enjoy authors who can get you interested in the storyline right off the bat. Who gives you enough characters to build the story around and make them and their backstory interesting. All the good old fashioned space fighting works too. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes science fiction.

I read books every day, about 1,200 pages a week.
Before I read a book, I check the rating and read some of the reviews. I usually don't write reviews because there are so many already written that are many paragraphs long. I'm not going to write so much.
I enjoyed this book very much. Well written, well developed characters, engaging plot. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

Other than a few typos and grammatical errors (pet peeves of mine), I found this story quite enjoyable. There wasn't quite as much character development as I would have liked for some of the supporting cast, but this is also the first book in the series. That can always come later. Speaking of later, when is the next book coming out? I need my sci-fi fix!

I absolutely loved this book! The new concept intrigued me. The main character was great. There was just enough back story and character development to get me engaged and caring about the cast. True, there seemed to be some throwaway characters but I definitely felt for them. The entire theme of cyclical time played into character development and back story. Very intriguing! Can't wait for more!

Awesome read! Although, the words of Yosemite Sam; "I hate you, rabbit", when I got to the end of book five....and it was continued!!! You're killing me sir. All of that to say, I can't wait for the next installment. Also a big thank you for making these available on Kindle Unlimited.

If you saw the movie, then this story will seem a little familiar. The main difference being the stage for this story is galactic in size and the timeline spans eons. My parental guidance recommendation for this book is NC-17. Language is clean, but there is lots of sex and violence, though nothing terribly graphic.

The war has only begun! Can't wait for the next book in the series! The End of Liberty (War Eternal, Book Two)

Fun, fast paced space opera, with oddly likable, but without a lot of depth supporting characters. A warning though, if abstract, complicated time loops give you a headache, this may not be the book for you. I enjoyed the premise, action, some cool characters and story that has plenty of kick ass moments. Good book, looking forward to seeing what's in store for the fate of humanity in the next in the series of 4.

Some stuff worked well. Other things were clunky.

I liked the "Dirty Dozen in Space" aspect. But some of the character motivations didn't have enough...depth. Forcing the characters to fit the narrative instead of having it be cooperative, maybe?

Some ideas weren't supported enough. The squadron Mitch is the sole survivor of is occasionally mentioned as being elite, but there wasn't anything backing that claim so even though others made the statement it felt like bragging with no basis.

The whole 'lost in time' aspect is tough.

Mitch shows almost no curiosity about the abilities of his new fighter. That simply seems unrealistic.

I guess I liked it well enough to finish it, but I can't really recommend anybody else to do the same. Unless you are bored. It's not terrible. But there is better stuff out there.

This book was a pleasant surprise. Space operas can often times be so boring and predictable and while you knew that the story would conclude in a particular way, the fun was in getting there in a unique way. I liked the technology of this universe and the way that it was used. Kudos to the author for making a good story. It is not epic or life changing but instead is a comfortable read. Exactly what I was looking for.

This first book in the War Eternal series was an excellent military space opera. Having been in the military, the command structure was well formed. The story line was well written, the characters developed. The tech was enough without getting me loaded down and away from the main plot. I am really looking forward to the rest of the books in this series.

A good read. At times it was hard to follow who vs who vs who. I had to read a few chapters over to find what was happening since I last put down this read. Great story line, a different twist on the usual time travel sci-fi. There is an interesting military subplot with lots of action, although some of it does get a bit unbelievable. The characters are more developed than usual, making the story more interesting. I'm pleased with the first volume and look forward to the next.

Starts softly and explains the target universe in detail. Technology seems a little one sided, but remains consistent throughout. Climax leaves lots of room for more storylines, especially related to the primary bad guys and tech lords from eons ago. We need a serious history lesson in this universe. Enjoyable read.

This book was entertaining but really stretched my suspension of disbelief. The time travel idea was intriguing but ultimately hurt the plot with be its inconsistencies. Nearly every single female character in the entire book jumped all over the main character romantically and/or intimately, which made me roll my eyes after the third time. Great ideas and concepts, but the writing fell flat.

Good mix of some interesting sci-fi time travel and alternative dimensions plus a space opera, romance, space pirates, secret agents, Goliath ( think Leviathan from Farscape) and an enemy like the Borg. Pretty good mix plus a non-hero hero Space Marine who is caught up in a Eternal War. Well witten and entertaining.

A little action, couple space battles, bit of romance, and a whole lot of confusion. Had a little of everything not much of anything, checked a lot of boxes but not enough of any one thing to make it stand out. The characters were alright, the storyline interesting, the dialogue ok. Not terrible but nothing special.

I really enjoyed starship eternal, primarily because I never knew what was coming. It was well conceived and well executed. I liked the whole idea of (spoiler alert) overlapping timelines, and something from the last loop being sent forward to prevent the same outcome. I recommend it to all sci-fi nerds (like me).

This is a very good first book, it can at times drag but not significantly. Your mind might become confused by the time loop implications which the author based this whole series on, just ignore that part and go with it :-) This is very indepth SO and some good potential going forward.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Well done. Look forward to Book 2. I would recommend this book to all.

External Time Loops, fast paced space battles, implants, bionics, alien high tech technology and lots of human elements. Humans are being over-run and one ship is the only hope to stop them. Will they succeed? You have to wait for Book 2 and beyond.

We have a hero who has been used by his military command. The book is about this hero who rallies others around him to take on the alien threat. Human Planets are being over-run and the aliens are using mind control on the humans to control and use them. The humans need to identify the creators. I have my own ideas who the creators may be. Will the creators be destroyed once they are identified. Depends on who the creators are. Read the book all. I won't spoil things.

Editing was not to bad. A few mistakes here and there but it does not distract from the story in my mind. I post this one example for the author to correct. "He ran his hair through her hair" .. thinking "He ran his hand through her hair".

Get the book all.

This was the first book in this series. If the rest are as well written and keep my attention I will continue to buy the author's other books. Interesting ideas on time. Battle mechanics a little under developed compared to some. Rote in regards to protagonist and opposite sex. Nice that the protagonist doesn't agonize over past and present to the degree other books will. Overall, a fun if simple space adventure.

I sincerely enjoyed this novel. The author made the diverse cast of characters relatable, interesting and genuine. The novel is written clearly with interesting technology but without nonsensical technobabble. It's a story based on characters rather than whimsical technologies - but it still has some very cool tech. I found myself reading this as quickly as I could because I couldn't wait to discover what was going to happen next. The story included some flashbacks which provided necessary context and history without diverting the story unnecessarily, and I was surprised to find myself looking forward to each one. The book was well edited, with no memorable grammatical or story holes, something I was very pleased about. I definitely recommend you give this book a try.

There are enough characters with enough depth and personality to draw you in and keep you engrossed that when you reach the end of the book you'll be giving a respectful nod to Captain Mitchell for getting you safely through the mystery, intrigue and dangers woven skillfully throughout this book.

I'm buying the rest of the series right now. I can't wait to see how this all works out!

Entertaining book. It draws from many past threads: reluctant war hero selling victory bonds, time traveler sent back to save man kind, dirty dozen, etc. A fun read that you find you can't put down. The only downside is following the dialogue and who is present with whom, it probably takes a better mind than what I have.

This was a very easy and enjoyable adventure. There were enough unknowns to keep me in suspense. I thoroughly enjoyed it and look forward to reading more by the author. I recommend this

While I enjoyed this book it had a few issues that are common to the genre. Good looking hero, check. Dark secret propped up by government/military, check. Eclectic crew of misfits that fit well, check. Unstoppable alien forces, check. Still, it was well written and kept me wanting more. Now to check out Forbes other works.

A well written enjoyable take on the science fiction trope of humanities last hope residing in the heroic protagonist. There are some interesting new takes that should hold the interest of the most jaded of long time science fiction readers. I'll be anxiously waiting for the next volume in the series.

I initially found myself attracted to Starship Eternal because 1). it's science fiction, and 2). the hero is a Marine. I found myself captivated - immersed in the world that Mr. Forbes expertly forms. Wonderful character development. I highly recommend this book. I can't wait to start reading volume 2!

Great read! Reminiscent of Starship Troopers. Good characters, plot. Believable dialog. Lots of action. Halfway through "The End of Liberty" (second of three books in the series) and am already getting itchy fingers to grab the third when it comes out. Gotta love it! :)

A surprisingly good read. Was just skipping through the Kindle Unlimited selection, and now I can hardly wait to get into the next installment.

(spoiler alert)

How do you top finding out that you're main character is in a war that spans ALL of time and space???

I don't want to give too much about the book away. Honestly, it's probably best to go in not knowing EXACTLY what to expect. There's hard military sci-fi mixed with a unique and satisfying brand of time travel. Read it.

The author does an okay job of creating interesting main characters. It is nice to see so many plot twists, yet the central focus is pushed forward naturally. The story is full of action, ship battles, space marine type action, and mystery. It isn't your standard space marine novel, which is both good and bad.

The good are the things that are spoilers that I can't really touch on. The bad is I do enjoy traditional space marine action and this tale isn't really about that. The world building is great and I enjoyed it. The love interests are important to the plot for the emotional aspect, which develops the turmoil in the primary players. Any "love" interests are more or less to round out the character.

I'm not into writing long reviews because I find them tedious to read. I'm also not a book critic wanna be. Simply put, I enjoyed spending the time reading this book. It wasn't a stunning literary masterpiece but it was a great read. Very interested to see where the author takes the tale.

I'm a long time science fiction fan especially of the star fighter category. Starship Eternal surprised me with its tech and savvy writing. The book is fast paced, well written and riveting. Hard to put down.

Really liked the book, definitely going to buy the next one. The whole premise is unique but plausible, and despite a few areas that could be a bit more fleshed out, it's a compelling read. I bought it at the start of a two day trip, and finished it on the jumpseat before I got home, and that never happens!

I found Starship Eternal to be a very entertaining and well written sci-fi novel. It does a great job laying the groundwork for a book series while also quickly jumping into the action. Definitely looking forward to the future books in the series.

Started off a bit slow, but after a bit I just couldn't put it down, had to read the next chapter.

Gutted to find out the 2nd one hasn't been completed yet. Definitely preordering it as soon as I can.
