Fight the complacency and consider this perspective. While the book does not reveal all of Google's secrets (you did not think it would did you?), it is a useful perspective on how things work at Google. From a management perspective, there is much here to learn and emulate.

Wonderful book for understanding how business works at Google. It focuses a ton on the culture that they have there, and how they empower people in a way that is very different from the conventional corporate structure. If you're looking for a fantastic book on business, you've got to get this. Schmidt and Rosenberg did a remarkable job.

Very good book. The audio version is great in the car!!
It is pretty interesting to see their management methods which I consider pretty modern and to sometimes put more thoughts through our own ideas which were maybe not as well defined.
i like the fact that it is also full of examples for every concept.

Riddled with contradictions, and with an obvious bias and agenda, this read is frustrating and struggles to find an authentic voice. For example: there are many instances where the authors state "At Google we don't do X" explaining that all other companies must be stupid and are motivated by employee pettiness for ever doing "X", and then a few pages later, you learn that Google actually *does* do "X" but of course is so much more enlightened in the approach and does so with unimpeachable employee motivations. A great example is "re-orgs" right in the first chapter but there are many more. Most of the comparisons set up on the book between Google and competitors are broad generalizations, which makes the comparison companies sound like straw men to prop up Google compounding this effect. There are otherwise some really good nuggets in here and some great anecdotes about the history of Google, but it's a shame the book is padded with so many of these distracting comparisons which call the veracity of the authors claims into question.

A somewhat self congratulatory and slightly repetitive look into what makes one of the post successful businesses of the 'internet age' tick. Well worth a read for those interested in how to move business forward by hiring and then empowering smart employees.

Fascinating story on how a Start-up became an enterprise, though copying their knowledge would not be easy unless I am super brilliant. Nevertheless this is sort of changing-world idea. Very encouraged.

Interesting read on how Google functions since its early days all the way to the current Internet Century Powerhouse status. The concept and characteristics of 'Smart Creatives' is indeed captivating and apt.

Very nice account of early google, the importance of *real* company values, and how to cultivate innovation. It seems more like a review of how it was when the authors got to google, than how it was when Schmidt left.

How Google Works with radically change your business ideals to align with the Internet Century. The books details the internal models and policies that allow for optimal innovation...and most of these oppose long-standing best practices.
The core principles are:
1. Throw out the typical hierarchical structure for smaller, agile teams
2. Hire the best talent (smart creatives) and do everything to make them happy
3. Allow freedom to innovate and fail fast
The authors go into much detail of these principles by walking the reader through the history of Google and the product development processes which led them to focus on such ideals. The insight is unparalleled as Eric was the CEO of Google from 2001-2011.
This is a must read if you are a leader focused on innovation.

The book gives good insight into how Google is managed. It offers practical guide to manage new age internet companies with 'smart creatives'.
Not sure if the principles can be applied to traditional industries as well.
