Together with Wouk's sister book, Winds of War, these narratives are spectacular in their depth and breadth. Reading them gave me new insights on WWII from a variety perspectives, from Holocaust victims to Nazi commanders.

These two novels, with its predecessor "winds of war" are possibly the greatest read of my life. The author's research is extraordinary, his gift of blending fact and fiction to weave the novels is most impressive. Mr. Wouk Is truly a great American author.

Magnificent. Should be required reading in any university course dealing with the history of the world during 1935 - 1945. Given the length of the two volumns
perhaps two parts of such an overall course. I don't recommend reading the second volumn without first having read the first. Although the second is so much more pithy.
War and Remembrance Vol. 2 :: A Personal Story of Remembrance and War, 1937-1948 :: The Hope :: War And Remembrance Volume 1 :: Let Me Lie

Excellent, historically accurate, vivid story of WWII and of two families' trials. Sublime writing, exciting. Particularly recommended for both those who know a great deal about the war and the Holocaust and for those who desire an introduction to these. Sufficiently detailed so that the careful reader will learn much. Characters are very well drawn as is American society in the thirties and forties. This book and its predecessor, "The Winds of War," are well worth anyone's time. A rousing success.

Beautifully written bitter reminder of the incredible atrocities evil ideologues commit when otherwise good but often self-serving people do nothing. This should be high on the recommended reading list for young Americans today.

Read this after Winds of War. Really enjoyed it and learned a lot about WWII. Mr. Wouk is quite easy to read unlike some other authors. I am going to read Killing Patton sometime this week. Strange at my age that I'm just now finding out details about WWII. I'm a 67 year old protestant female. Typically I read political/espionage which is fictional. Mostly shorter in length than this book. Don't mind spending time reading a longer book occasionally.

Paired with The Winds of War, this sequel, which can be read on its own, completes a sweeping WW2 story written as only Herman Wouk can. I have read these two books multiple times just to savor the prose and Wouk's unparalleled style. Wouk is one of the greatest writers in modern times.

Last month, I began to read "War and Rememberence" again in my 2 volume book set from approx 1980. Then I realized how much more enjoyable it would be on my kindle, since the hard cover books are so large and hard to manage in bed.

I love the mix in of the naval scenes and the lives of the various characters in the events during World War 2. The characters make the history come to life for me. My dad was a survivor from the Pearl Harbor attack on the USS California, then served on smaller ships during the war. This gives me another tie to the book that makes it special.

This is my favorite book covering this era. Love the author and his work!

I found this book gripping and a real page turner. Again, Herman Wouk did not dissapoint. I read Winds of War several years ago and never did get around to reading this one until now. I am so glad I ordered it. My only complaint is not with the book but the multitude of typos and spelling errors in the Kindle form. That seems to be an ongoing issue with most Kindle purchases I have made.

This book[s] should be read by all thinking people to insure history doesn't repeat itself. Its long & admittedly sometimes a very difficult read but having lived during WW11,I don't want my grandchildren to ever experience the inhumanity of tyranny. What happened to Jews could happen to any race or culture if its allowed to take hold.Niavety is not a legacy for future generations.Ther's always a Hitler lurking ready to decieve.

this is a great story with many thoughtful messages. it is a bit long however and I skimmed some of it to get through. some of the writing doesn't advance the plot and so the book bogs down. Still, one of the classics.

The best, most comprehensive, in fascinating history of World War II I have ever read. Wouk's depiction of the Holocaust was horrifyingly accurate and will forever remain in my consciousness. It started my quest to understand how and why it could ever have happened. That will take a lifetime and never be resolved. The book also got me totally hooked on the era-the customs, ethics, culture, music, films...all of it. Wouk's historical accuracy is really astonishing. I'm on my third time through, each time focusing on a different aspect.

This book (and The Winds of War) was recommended to me after I told someone how much I enjoyed The Fall of Giants/Winter of the World by Ken Follett. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story. The characters are marvelous and their adventures collectively will bring you happiness and break your heart. This novel is definitely one to pass onto friends!

What a great book! I enjoyed reading it tremendously, it's like you live with these people in a real life. And the great story too based on excellent historical research. If anyone would recommend something next as good to read? Much be appreciated.

I recently bought this edition along with Winds of War as a gift to my retiring assistant who herself worked for the Dept of the Navy more than 30 years. I read the book years ago, and would recommend it to anyone without hesitation. As a naval officer, Wouk's book reinforces my appreciation for our great naval heritage.

This timeless classic could stand alone but with book one, "Winds of War" it is the definitive WWII historical novel that will keep you up nights. The finest books ever written on the human drama of global warfare, spanning both the globe and the scope of human emotions.

Given that this is a historical novel, there are too many unpredictable turns. The book is an excellent read and ties in many of the back stories of WWII. This and the author's "Winds of War" provide an excellent insight into the war as seen principally through the eyes of one family. Outstanding character development and I was sorry to see the book end. Five stars in my book.

Absolutely love this book. A perfect sequel to The Winds of War. Sure they both are lengthy but I still didn't want them to end. A must read, especially those who enjoy historical fiction. A fine way to put yourself in the era of WWII.

War and Remembrance and Winds of War are the best examples of historical fiction I know of; both of these books should be required reading in high school when students learn about WWII. The only thing missing is a companion reader that would include maps of the campaigns, battles and engagements along with some other short narratives of the events.

Herman Wouk is a master of literature. This tome goes hand-in-hand with his earlier work, The Winds of War. My family also owns the complete video series of this film. The book itself is very detailed, yet easy to read and lose track of time with.

The characters of the novel itself were predictable and uninteresting to the point of irritating, however the explanation of the military and political background of the war was superb and entirely readable. For interest in the facets of the war itself the two books are fascinating. Ignore the silly fictional characters and their wooden personalities.

Herman Wouk writes an amazing story grounded in the real history of WWII and is NEVER boring. The book is a fabulous read and one that was difficult for me to put down. His characters are nuanced and real, and morally grounded. Wouk's writing is elegant, often poetic. When I had finished reading the book, I was eager to read the sequel, War and Remembrance. I heartily recommend to anybody who likes an unforgettable story to read this book. I look forward to reading more books written by Herman Wouk.
