Fifth star withheld only because I had realized whodunnit fairly early on- but thoroughly enjoyed the book nonetheless- I enjoy the character development of even minor characters; I can see it play out like a movie in my head! Beds is, however, a bit slow catching on to her future soulmate!

This was an interesting book set in England during World War I. While it was a bit slow in the beginning, I found the characters interesting enough to keep reading. And I'm glad did! Nursing Sister Bess Crawford is a tireless, persevering, and oftentimes
unrelenting pursuer of truth. Her niggling questions and doubts cause a lot of trouble, not only for herself, but also for those close to her, especially Simon. Will she ever realize the love he has for her? If you find love, infidelity, murder, and war intriguing, you'll enjoy An Impartial Witness: A Bess Crawford Mystery.

Charles Todd's books are addictive. I teach music to almost 1000 children a month in a Title I school. When I have had a particularly challenging day, whether it be teaching more and more children with fewer and fewer resources and still being expected to achieve the same quality of instruction as in past years or dealing with children born on drugs with 60 second attention spans,
I open up Todd's books and am transported to another time in which the moral boundaries were more greatly defined whether or not they were adhered to. Thank you, Charles Todd (mother and son) for being such a great team of writers and helping a tired school teacher face another day of heartbreaking inspiration from children born into an adult system based upon entitlement and cell phones.

Enjoyed development of characters, Bess and her friends. I really enjoy stories set in the Frist World War. My father fought in France and had the flu during the epidemic and was in the hospital there. This adds to my interest for the Bess Crawford series. Looking forward to reading others.

Lovely setting, poignant and compelling story of murder in the midst of war. Period details are like a background painting, never overwhelming the reader. Bess is a terrific main character, smart and kind.

Enjoyed the book. Characters were well-defined and the setting in England and France during World War I was interesting. Kept me guessing until the very end. Would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good mystery with a historical setting.
