Although this book will probably tell you that personal testimony is not very effective as an evidence since you do not know me, I still want to contribute here to say that this book is terrific. Throughout the book, the author guides you what questions to ask when you look at an argument. This book provides me with insights to how to approach arguments and opinions. More importantly, it helps me understand how to revisit my own opinions and positions and how to contruct my argument more effectively.

An excellent book on the subject of reflective thought and criticism. Moreover, this book was more concise and illustrative than others I have read on the subject. This book includes many helpful case examples of short one and two paragraph essays which are analyzed critically for assumptions and fallacies in reasoning. If you needed to buy (and keep) just one book on the subject of critical thinking - this one should be it.

This book is, at best, a remedial 7th grade English composition book.
The first three chapters center around VERY basic argument construction, essentially describing conclusions and the need for reasons to support them. I'd like to believe that I outgrew the need for "indicator words for a conclusion" when I left middle school.
All in all, it's not terribly written: the material is logically organized and satisfactorily laid-out. However, this book seems to be marketed towards college students, and I can't believe the public school system in the U.S. has degenerated to the extent that high school graduates can't make use of basic argumentative structures.
I have no idea why this is used as a standard text in my GRADUATE-level Business Communication course. I don't mean to sound overly pretentious, but I honestly feel insulted that I have to stoop to such an unsophisticated style to prove that I've read the material.
This book may be useful to you if you have a substandard grasp of high-school English, but most of the content should be common knowledge to most university students.

Challenging ideas is always the hard way - but it seems to be the only way forward when moving in an unknown environment. That's why I found this book very convenient for people who want to get into business management.
