This book was recommended to me by an instructor at a NRA class on home protection. He recommended it for its content on the psychology you must draw on in order to be effective should the time come to protect yourself, your family and your possessions.

The author is an expert and relates experiences from his students and other researches in the subject.

I found it fascinating reading and I have an entirely new level of respect for the military and the police who put their lives on the line to protect us.

This book brings reality home to roost. Superb follow-up to "On Killing". Takes the glamour out of the real business of armed confrontation.

Someone in your family suffer from PTSD? A reading of this book will help you better understand that condition and the other consequences of war and armed conflict

I love this book! I ordered several copies of this to give to co workers. As a deputy sheriff, we relate to this book very well. Dave Grossman did an excellent job in writing this book. I highly recommend this book to anyone really, but especially police, or military. Mr Grossman hits the nail right on the head so many times!! I wish i could give this book more than 5 stars!

Everything that Dave Grossman does is awesome. "On Killing", "The Bulletproof Mind", and "On Combat" are undoubtedly some of the best researched and articulated views of killology that I have yet to see. Please see his seminars if they ever come to your area.

Grossman takes you deep into the many fears, hesitations and simply the unknowns that are faced by many that serve within the military and law enforcement. His studies are simply to understand and the many examples make the read hit home that much better. I would consider this a must read for anyone already serving or intending on serving in either the military or law enforcement field.

The media should be held more responsible to the public by reporting at least a tiny fraction of what lies in this book along with their daily sensationalized stories on police brutality. Every military wife should read this book. I'm reading it because my daughter is one year away from graduating college and entering the police academy. We average citizens talk so much about PTSD and how sad it must be for our returning soldiers. But, most of us don't even know what we are referring to when we say it. I'm learning by reading this book. It's not for my entertainment. It's for my comprehension so I can be more aware and not be so judgmental. Thank you, Kelsea Shellenberger, for introducing me to this book!

This book helped me to clarify my feelings about warriors and their responsibilities and their rights. It is written in a straight forward way that gets right to the topics. I probably reread this book again and again.

This is one of the most insightful descriptions of how a person reacts under extreme stress. It shows why training should be presented in a way that mandates and simulates reactions to stressful situation so that you can count on your body to react correctly as your brain is being assaulted by your body's natural reactions to stress. Highly recommended.

A powerful and effective presentation of what a soldier, law enforcement officer, or self protecting citizen goes thorough when facing lethal action. Filled with true stories and practical advice. It can save your life, or the life of someone you love.

This book should be read by anyone in the military or law enforecement, or anyone who knows someone in the military or law enforcement. This will give you a great perspective on what these brave men and women go through during life and death situations.

Absolutely fantastic. Gives a great history of how humans have learned and improved on killing psychologically. Also really brings in all the numerous situational factors when one has to make a life or death choice in combat or in the line of duty. Understanding everything that goes on can really change one's perspective on use of force (especially lethal) by law enforcement officers and military members. I recommend this to anyone who is interested in the psychology of killing, or has an unfavorable opinion of law enforcement officers and how they use force. Grossman and Christensen really put a lot of great research together to bring the facts.

Absolutely one of the best books on this subject ever. I've incorporated much of this information into my concealed weapons classes. The information contained in here has helped me have a better understanding of the human mind and allowed me to be a better instructor as I understand my students better.

Excellent read for anyone who is or whose loved one is facing combat. Draws much more on law enforcement data and experience than the title/cover leads you to believe. Written in an easy to read style (rather than an academic work) the narrative is sometimes hampered by opinion or overstatement of case - which lead to the downgrade from five to four stars.

This is a very specialized subject area... and while it is so on-point for those who are necessarily part of this world, others will not receive the message at all. But is you are listening, it is the best!

Anyone who has read "On Killing" knows that Col. Grossman knows his stuff on this topic. "On Combat" is a new look at this topic with many updates and some new ideas, including more original research into the mental processes that take place in the mind of a warrior during combat situations. The authors also look at the mental processes of 'recovery', why recovery sometimes goes wrong, and compare the homecoming of the veterans of the various 20th century wars to look at the results of Vietnam vs the other conflicts.

Combat stress and ways to minimize it are discussed, as well as the etymology of psychological casualties in combat. And as always, the trainer comes out in Col. Grossman throughout the book.

I was able to attend a conference recently and hear Col. Grossman speak. If you ever have the opportunity to go to one of these, DO NOT pass it up. He is one of the best speakers I've ever heard, and he'll completely engage you on this topic. In my opinion, EVERY cop, school administrator, teacher, and other LE personnel in America should be required to attend one of his seminars. If this were to happen, it could almost eliminate the threat of another major terrorist attack in this country.

We need more sheepdogs! Hooah!

Excellent book that goes from discussing the physiology, to the psychology, and finally to the emotional and psychological aftermath of deadly combat. Lt-Col. Grossman knows his stuff and communicates effectively. Highly recommend for those who may themselves face deadly combat, and equally recommended for those who want to better understand the experience of those who have dealt with it.

Dave Grossman completes a wonderfully deep exploration of a world that very few professionals have any understanding of - let alone experience. Having worked in special forces, as a doctor and as a resilience consultant I recommend this as compulsory reading for any soldier or police officer who bears arms. Additionally, this is a very important perspective that many professionals in medicine, psychology, sport and business could learn from.
