very informative book about microorganisms(bacteria, virus..) everywhere around us, you should read and get a broader view and understanding how those tiny features can cause us lots of diseases and how to prevent them, and other things related to microbiology.

arrived as promised, in great shape, a good bargain compared to the same hardbound textbook. It's also nice to be able to remove single pages or whole chapters for classes and labs instead of lugging the whole book all semester. This is a very large book, but easy to read, it's laid out well. Buying loose leaf has been a lifesaver. I have so many classes and having to carry entire books is a pain. I am able to remove a single chapter and place it in a smaller binder for my busy day. When I'm done with the chapter I place it back in the book pile and get the next one. Since the overall price is less than hardbound, I plan on keeping this book for reference and have been able to highlight like crazy.

I saved a lot of money compared to buying this book at my school or other sources. It includes access to Course Compass & a study sheet. I don't like the paper version very much because it is hard to look through the pages because they aren't really bound to anything but for the money I would definitely recommend this product. Also, the book is easy to navigate and interesting for a science book.

I have to admit that this is the first textbook I have ever actually used. I always purchase my textbooks but never refer back to them. I used this book for everything, I LOVE this book. It is so simple and easy to read. All the pictures are helpful and it does a great job explaining the topics and concepts perfectly. I am pre-nursing and this book worked great for me. It does refer back to other chapters but all texts that I've had do that. I don't see why this is an issue for others who have reviewed this book. I will definitely be keep this one for future reference!

I purchased this book for my Microbiology class in advance and set it aside in preparation for the start time. After getting to my second week of eight weeks I found myself needing to go to the index and was astonished to see I was missing pages I-3 through I-34. After waiting 6 hours to talk to a rep at Pearson I was told they can not do anything for me and I need to go to the store to get a replacement. Well I was past my window to do that also. Lesson learned...

As far as the book being the correct edition and getting the book on time, everything was great. However, i bought the hardcover book new and it was damaged already. There were what seemed like bite marks on the edge of the book and small dents on the side of the cover. Also i wish i had known the access card was all the way in the back between last page and cover. Its not a big deal but i freaked out at first because i couldn't find it when i first opened the packaging. Everything else was fine.

I have a lot of experience with health-based science courses. This book has been the worse textbook that I have read to date. The authors are long-winded and don't explain concepts in a clear manner. Plus, the book is designed in a way that combines the characteristics of Viruses, Bacteria, and Fungi in every chapter. As a reader, I found that I had to "re-set" by brain to identify which organism the authors had switched to. It was very disruptive and not conducive to learning. They would have been better off talking about viruses in one chapter, bacteria in another, etc., etc.

Note: The online component was not arranged well either. It takes an average of 7, very confusing mouse clicks, in order to navigate anywhere within the program. Plus, there weren't any actual Learning Tools integrated into the program (no games, etc.). It was a complete waste of money, and I wouldn't have purchased it unless required by the course.

Arrive on time, Perfect in all shape, color as in the image, there is wear and tear, but I like it. Holding the book and browsing the pages overshadow the tear and wear. Stick to the textbook and study guide. Thanks

Thanks so much :)

I don't have any complaints about the content of this textbook. It would be a 5 star rating except that it isn't available digitally. I hate carrying this heavy, oversized book along everywhere I go. Please go digital!

The book is good but the listing is wrong. The listing state that the book come with etext and access code but it doesn't. It is a used book. If you need the etext and access code try different seller.

Repeat - NO ACCESS CODE. I took a chance on buying this because other reviews said it came iwth one (I bought it new). It doesn't, so now I have to pay $60 to get the access code. What you need to buy is this http://www.the store.com/Microbiology-Introduction-MasteringMicrobiology-Access-Package/dp/0321793110/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1390019446&sr=1-1&keywords=9780321793119. That was money wasted. HUGE BUMMER!

I ordered this as a required text book for a class I was taking. The text book arrived on time and in good condition. However, the book was misprinted and was missing 1 1/2 entire chapters which obviously made using the book to learn that material impossible. I was especially frustrated since I contacted both the seller and the publisher about the issue and did not receive a helpful response from either. Very disappointing.

it said used, and I was thinking, old textbook. what I did not expect was for the previous owner to highlight the key passages in the book in blue highlighter - who does that?! it makes it so difficult to read. I'm so disappointed and now that class is starting in 2 days, I do not have time to return this for another copy. ugggghh

I only purchased this book because my college required this specific edition, but it's very thick with lots of reading and doesn't really explain as well it could for the price its worth. I have found other books to be more helpful and give you better understanding of the complex material not visible to naked eye and they were less thicker and not as long.

Its a cheap used book. The description is accurate.. its not in the state that i wish it wouldve been in, but for the price i cant complain at all.. it does its job of being a microbio book perfectly. Or a huge paper weight.

I ordered this copy because it was marked as NEW. When we received it, there at the side of the book in big letters was the name of the first owner. So disappointed. Since I live at the other end of the globe, I just gave up in resignation.

It was a great textbook to use as a reference for my class lecture, although, for an introductory course, there was a lot more info needed in the textbook than what I actually needed. But, in many ways, I appreciate the added details, because it helped me remember the general concept of each lecture. My professor was pleased I read the additional details.

I received the book on-time, which was great! The book is covered in highlight colors with side notes that makes it really difficult to read the book. I am also not to satisfied that the store will want to book back prior to my class being over. I tried calling to let them know the inconvenience about that and they said I will be charged a late fee for turning it in late if I don't turn it in on the due date.

It's a hard subject regardless, so as you can imagine the book is a little dense. It's very small print and I get tired reading it most of the time. I'm also not a biology major, so I really don't find this book all that interesting. There's a lot of vocabulary, and I don't really think the book does a great job of defining the important vocab while you're reading the chapters. There are useful online sources you can use with the book, like taking quizzes on the chapters, but you have to purchase that separately. I'd recommend buying the online help, because as I said the book is dense. Overall it does it's job, but I wouldn't say it goes above and beyond with helping me understand the material for my class.

I just opened the book and tried to log-on to the website, when I discovered that the access code page had been neatly cut out of the book.
I'm sending it back. I was very disappointed, but trust that the the store return system will work properly.

When purchasing the product it was advertised as a "softback" text book. When the product arrived it was not a softback book, it was a printed text for a three ring binder that did not even include a cover or the binder. Text books set in three ring binders do not have the durability to survive a semester and pages tearing out is a constant problem. There is no way this is worth $95 and I would have gladly paid the extra $20 to get a traditional hard bound text book.

I ordered this text and it came looseleaf without a binder. I never used it bc i didnt have a binder big enough for the text. This looseleaf version is useless. I did however use the access code so i cant return it but I plan on re-selling it

Other reviews say their package came in shrink wrap and had an access code in it. Mine did not. Now I have to purchase the access code elsewhere when I could have just purchased the book with the access code at my college bookstore the same day instead of having it shipped to me.

Exactly the book I needed for micro 2010C. It’s better if you buy the mastering microbiology access card - but do that through Pearson. Most colleges sell it for $120 ish. If you go through Pearson, it’s $60 something.

I am giving 2 stars only for pictures and graphs. They are very detailed and informative.
It is hard to believe that this book was written by college teachers for student in pre-nursing program. The constructions of sentences are complicated and not clear. I had to do extra search online for better understanding and be able to answer on specific quiz questions. The writers jump from one subject to another through the chapters. For better memorizing, I take notes while I am reading but it is not so easy with this book because I will add more and more information to the same question (for example, role of enzymes) until I finish to read the chapter. I use a pensel to make some notes then its do not look so massy.
Another thing is organization of chapters. The chapter where there is explanation of different types of media and methods should be second one, after historical review. The reason for it is the labs which should be continuation of theoretical parts.
Moreover, I do not think that RN will remember all those details microorganism's respiration such as number of CO2 molecules 3-5 years later or so, if she will ever use its in her practice. I suggest that the authors should be more concern giving materials about pathogenic microbes because its are what she/he will work with.

THE INTRODUCTION TO MICROBIOLOGY 9TH EDITION WITH THE CD -ROM, WAS EXACTLY A BRAND NEW TEXT BOOK.THE TEXT BOOK HAS NEVER BEEN USED AND THE CD-ROM WAS STILL INTACT. The only good thing about this item, was that it arrived in a timely fashion. This company sent me an instructors edition. Then after going back and forth with the company via email, I called the company. The supervisor had horrible customer service and was not willing to work with me. The only option they willing offered to me was to send a return label, and they would refund my purchase. My class starts in 14 days, and it would take over 10 days to deal with the return and refund. The supervisor was not willing to take into account that I'm a student and will not be able to resell the book that they messed up with. This company is horrible to deal with.

When I purchased the book for my Microbiology course this spring I wasn't aware that the MasteringMicrobiology would not have all of their resources up until Feb 10. This didn't help considering it was a mandatory part we needed for our class. I don't think it is fair to set up an expiration date on the online materials when the entire product isn't up and running.

So I decided to get the 9th edition instead of the 10th to save a hundred bucks... Wish I hadn't because I I'm waiting for the dam book to come in after I take my first week of classes and I'm still waiting. I ordered the books 2 weeks before classes and I ordered 3 other books, they all came in and I was forced to buy the book from school store so I don't fail any assignments. So guess what! IM STILL WAITING FOR THE BOOK! they stole my money and didn't send the book, I reported it to the store and they said they can't do anything about it because they are an outside company, not technically the store, so take my advice and don't give these people your money, they will steal it and not give you anything in return, Imma give the better business bureau a call see if they can do something about this.

I have the 2nd edition of this book. It is very comprehensive and informative. My 2nd edition is outdate and don't have recent drugs such as Azithromycin and or recent developments. This is the 11th edition so it is the most comprehensive.

I still refer to my 2nd edition time and time again as I sometime I forgot the details and terminologies, as I don't work in the medical field and am not expose to these terminologies everyday.

I am glad that I never sold my text book back to the school after the class was over as this text book is very handy over the years. As many time I would read news article, scientific publications and health books that would have puzzle me or be as strange as reading Greek or Latin, the knowledges in this text book and reference from this text book makes a big difference.

I have taken Biology but what you learn in Microbiology is much more interesting and useful than Biology. If one of your many elective choice include Microbiology vs some easy elective, takes Microbiology. Taking the easier elective class might meet your requirement but the reward is worthless. Even if it might seems hard, complicated, or lots of works, the reward you learn from this class will be with you for the rest of your life.

I give this text book 5 stars because of the quality of the materials and the usefulness the information in this book have been to me over the years.

I rented this book for the summer from eCampus.com and was SOOOOOO sad that I had to return it! Who knew that I could enjoy a textbook so much?!?!?!?! Everything is explained extremely well and I love the pictures. Come on now, if we're talking about the icky things microbes can do to you I want pictures! LOL! The online access is a great tool also because it does not just restate what the book says but it offers further explanations and plenty of interesting information.

Anywho, Pearson was awesome as well when it came time to purchase an access card. I had some problems with my account and the customer service rep was ON IT! She understood that this was a class with deadlines and if we didn't get the problem fixed my grade would suffer. Pearson also sent an email to the online instructor to let her know at the issues with my account were due to an error on their part and not a lack of effort on mine (awww how sweet!).

Sadly, this book is on my Christmas wish list :)

This is a good reference work.
ALSO, contrary to a couple of the negative reviews, I found that individual chapters are clear and enjoyable to read, EVEN out of order. Of course the chapters reference one another, because the the subject is inherently complex. That's not the fault of the authors, that's just the nature of the material! Excellent book. I highly recommend it.
(Yes, slightly overpriced I suppose, but then so are all such text books, whatever "overpriced" means.)

I honestly think the other reviews of this book are fraudulent, because they're just so off base.

This book takes an already very complex subject, and presents it in the most confusing and unclear way imaginable. The book is often worded in a way that adds confusion to nearly every paragraph. and it offers no 'user friendliness' at all. No pneumonics, no guidance, nothing to help you absorb the material. Throughout each chapter you will be left constantly confused often resorting to Wikipedia to clear things up. Simple tests like the ELISA are presented in a way that makes it impossible to understand without searching elsewhere. Topics vary wildly within chapters in a very unorganized fashion.

Have you ever quickly cobbled together a paper without refining it in order to finish it quickly? That's how this book seems to have been written.

I have a 3.7 GPA in nursing and all As in my previous biology courses. This is my second college degree and I have read probably a hundred textbooks by now. This book is a horror!

Very well written. I don't normally write reviews, but I rented this book for a course. In reading it in conjunction with my lab material, I have decided to purchase these books for further readings!! Totally great! Best to teach to students with strong previous lab experience (referring to "active-thinking" hands on labs in biology/chemistry/physics), critical thinking (calculus, physics, chemistry) completed prior to information in this book. Its really well explained and allows you to use the lab opportunity for hands-on questioning. My prof at CSUB taught from this book and I'm really glad that we did. Now its time to make room on my bookshelf!! :)

THIS BOOK IS EXCELLENT. I originally purchased it for a course in undergraduate Microbiology. It explains concepts and ideas clearly and has many illustrations to increase understanding of structures and the details of microbial organisms, such as viral envelopes and bacterial cell walls. Now that I am in Medical school, I still refer back to it as an introduction and refresher for more advanced medical courses. The concepts are so clearly presented that it is easy to go back and read over a few chapters of this book to enhance and reinforce the understanding of particular subjects. When you are short on time, it is much better to review chapters in this book than to scan and decipher numerous pages of medical text when many of the important main points are presented clearly in this text. Although, I recommend using it as an adjunct to your class lecture notes. If you are looking for a dry, banal book that will put you to sleep, this is not it. ANYONE WHO GAVE THIS BOOK A BAD REVIEW IS WRONG!!! THIS BOOK IS EXCELLENT!!! BUY IT AND SEE FOR YOURSELF!!!

This was the required text for the microbiology class I took. I found this book to be very informative and helpful. The class was an introduction to microiology and this book was perfect for it! And I'm sure that, had this book been that bad, the instructor would never have selevte it for the course. My only regret is that I sold it back to the campus bookstore at the end of the semester; I wish I still had this to go back to and look up the information.

I'm a nursing student, and I can't stress enough how much I LOVE this book. Gives a pretty good overview of microbial activity, signs & symptoms of the particular infection, antimicrobial agents' mechanisms and side effects. Book seems tailored to nursing students. As another reviewer stated, subjects were scattered all over book. Constant referrals to other chapters and sections. If you choose to do the review questions in back of book, you won't find the answers unless you go on-line, very annoying as I don't like to study in front of a computer. Lastly in other science textbooks there are often mid-chapter review questions to help you learn - this had none of that. Book was useless, learned more from instructor's outlines.

This review is only about the book itself, as I did not order this book from the store or an the store seller. While it is an informative textbook, it is full of typographical errors. It doesn't look like it was proofread at all. Most of the errors don't really interfere with learning the material, but it comes across as sloppy and unprofessional. Also, I feel that some of the questions asked at the end of the chapter "Study Questions" are not thoroughly addressed in the text. It leaves me to wonder how I was supposed to know the answer without referencing a source other than the book.
I wouldn't necessarily advise against getting this book, but I don't have any other micro textbooks to compare it to either. The book is certainly full of useful information, the complaints above are just frustrating to me.

I taught a basic undergraduate microbiology class using this text book. The students were mostly pre-nursing so we had a clinical focus. My main problem with the text is it is trying to be all things to all people. It tries to present too much information that is scattered all over the text. Frequently, within chapters, students have to jump back and forth to material presented in other chapters and it simply becomes information overload. In addition, some of the study question, especially the clinically oriented ones, ask the students about areas that haven't been adequately covered in the text or assume knowledge that they don't have as yet. Finally, beware the Powerpoint slide presentations. These are also full of errors and need pretty extensive editing.

We used this book in our Microbiology class (community college-pre nursing). Everyone, including me, disliked this book. We usually keep all our books for future use, but concensus was to get rid of this one. We have found the topics to be scattered all over the book and not organized well. DNA replication information was not clearly explained...In fact I found most of the topics to be better explained in "Biology" by Cambell-Reece-Mitchell. I usually read all my books. This class, I used the web for DNA replication and bacteria caused diseases, and biology book for the rest. One good thing came out of this. It forced me to use the web, and it is a great resource for Micro.

This 9th edition book works great even if you were told to get the newest 10th edition you really don't need it. I've compared them and they are almost identical. I think its a little confusing, things jump around a lot and the tables are not on the same page as the text a lot of the time. But my professor follows it exactly. The writing is really detailed and confusing but the pictures and tables are plentiful and helpful for simplifying or clairifying.
