I look foreward to more. The story was well written, and its nice to see something quality from a character position typically only reserved for secondary, or minor characters. Its great to have something from a non-human(ish) perspective. I read the first 8 chapters in the morning before work, and read the rest in one sitting after work.

Do you like stubborn protagonists who don't mind bucking the system that people are trying to force on them and doing their own thing while trying to figure out just what in the world is going on? Then this is probably the book for you. I enjoyed this book immensely and can't wait for the next one.

Dan builds a fascinating world with interesting moral quandaries and unforgettable characters. Ever wonder what would happen if you were suddenly an animal with no warning or thrust into magical worlds with no warning? Then this is the experience for you.

I was torn between giving a three and four star rating. I ended up giving it a four for a simple reason. I enjoyed the story, and are looking forward to the next one.

I had some initial problems with Off Leash, due in part to the way the narration skips around. I'm not sure if it was intentional or accidental, but there were several scenes where I had to stop and reread, thinking I had gotten mentally turned around, and a couple of scenes where things seemed to skip or skitter. Almost like a film glitch.

Still, by the end of the book, I was emotionally invested in Thomas' plight, and was rooting for him, O'Meara, and Noise. It's not as light hearted as some of the blurb seemed to paint it, but it was fun to read, and I'm looking forward to Marking Territory.

Engrossing story about witches and familiars in the modern world. Believable and multi-faceted characters with a dash of humor makes this one of the must read for fans of Fantasy.

Very similar to Patricia Briggs series of werewolves and shapeshifters.

We are thrown in mid action and never really catch up. Thomas is promised it will all be explained but that never happens. Found myself halfway thru the book and still frustrated with unanswered questions.

A little sloppy. Needs proofing. The world building is a little haphazard.

Some unique ideas about magic systems. I liked the Familiar design, but it wasn't really developed as well as it should have been. A few too many plot points were glossed over with 'magic'.

Entertaining, and Rudy is awesome. I don't feel I can recommend this to a casual reader.

I was only going to waste a little time with this small book, but surprisingly, I found that it had much more to offer then I had assumed.

It was entertaining, and well written with an intriguing plot.

Cute where you wouldn't expect, and harsher then you'd assume.

Definitely worth reading.

Off Leash by Daniel Potter is a fun little Indie book I picked up through a promotion recently, it's on KU but worth plunking down the purchase price for it. I'm not quite sure how to categorize it in a sub-genre, because it's Urban Fantasy but not really... The main character is a bit whiny at times, but he has a good heart, and I do so like stories where the protagonist grows up and makes difficult decisions. What makes this a fluffy tale is the nature of the conflict: Tom, the hero, is forcibly changed into a big cat. A very big kitty, in fact, a cougar. He promptly runs afoul of witches, a union, and a tiny but angry owl. His only ally is a squirrel, as long as Tom can resist the urge to make a snack of him.

It's a light, pleasant romp. It's not the most immersive writing, and at times I found the angst a bit irritating. But it carried me along in the story to the end, and when a sequel comes out, I will pick it up. The author left a lot of dangling loose ends, but managed to do so without making this book feel like a cliffhanger ending. The story arc was complete, it's just that it feels like a bouncing ball about to go up again rather than a plot at rest. I can't talk about some of the later revelations without adding spoilers, but I am curious to see how the author plans to resolve what feels a lot like a love triangle. I also want to know more about the werewolf puppies. Something makes me think they will be a handful.

A humorous tale of a man’s transformation into an animal familiar! The phrase “that’s just crazy enough to work” comes to mind when describing this story. Wonderful cover art and illustrations - so few books for older audiences take advantage of art to reveal parts to the audience.

Off Leash (Freelance Familiars #1) by Daniel Potter is my first experience from this author. It is a fun, sweet paranormal fantasy. After a sluggish start this develops into a really good story. It took me a bit to warm up to Thomas but he has such a great heart you can’t not like him. Thrown into a new reality and a new body Thomas has a lot to deal with and he does in his own way. I love that he is strong enough (unsure enough) not to fall in with the party line and that is what makes the story rock! A fun new series and adventures I am looking forward to. Looking forward to the next book Marking Territory.

Fast paced and funny, it's one of those books that could easily have been made into a 90's movie, if only the CG for a talking cougar was there. Some things where resolved too simply and people who where needed always seemed to show up just in the nick of time, but that's a minor nitpick and it didn't distract from the overall story.

I got this through the KU program.
I really loved this story, from the moment our hero witnesses a hit and run, his life goes completely astray. A person who apparently is very good at making the wrong choice, he continues however to blunder on stubbornly to not just maintain his own freedom, but try to do what he believes is right. All the while dealing with a number of people who have let their own power and gifts go to their heads.
As a first published book by the author, this is really a very good book, and a very good read. I loved it.

What would you do if you wake up one morning and you find yourself in the body of a mountain lion? After you finish freaking out, you learn the world is not as you know it and magic exist and you are now a highly sought after familiar to be sold to the highest bidder...Well that is what this book is about. This is a highly cheesey entertaining fast paced fun book.

This was huge amounts of fun. An ordinary guy waking up as a mountain lion - honestly, he copes far better than most people, but still has a realistically difficult time adjusting. Lots of magic, magical politics, action, and plenty of mystery. I can't find a single thing to complain about!

I stumbled upon this book by chance and after reading the first five chapters I was hooked enough to give it a buy. It was certainly worth it!

Now the story does have its fair share of flaws. For example, especially at the beginning, much like the character, I was confused by a lack of answers or a missing ulterior objective that would serve as the main character's motivation. In the end it sorted itself out fairly ok, but especially during the first part of the book the reason to keep on reading, for me, was not so much the plot but the tale of Thomas' transformation and first experiences in his new body.

Overall the book is amusing, the characters are lovable and I'm looking forward to the next part.

A fun take on a magical secret society that permeates our modern society. This book is a great book but feels like a precursor to a much larger universe. So many little details are hinted at, and for once 'magic' doesn't just work by magic in this universe, it has intricacies and centuries of development behind it so it can rival the complexities of modern technologies. It's not as simple as a wave of the wand, but layers and layers of delicate threads interacting and influencing to make even the trivial spells they take for granted.

I had a lot of fun with this book.

I enjoyed watching our main character learn about his new existence while holding on to his old self. The authors' character and world building are simple and well thought out. I look forward to watching this author grow and expand.

This was a wonderful read that quickly had me hooked to the point where it was hard to put down. The main character is lovable but a few of the supporting cast almost steal the show. I already am going to read this book again and hope that the next book in the series comes out soon and is even better then this one.

This was delightful. Snappy, breezy first-person novel, with a Special Magical World (tm) that's believable just as much for its pettiness as for its Special Magical Stuff. Fresh perspective, lots of humor and no few video-game shout-outs made this a really good light read. The prose was occasionally clunky, but more in the way of first-novel mistakes, and I would love to see more of these. (Special props for having an engaging cover that actually has something to do with the story.)

I was captivated by the description of life as a man turned into a mountain lion. I loved the details describing what it feels like to have a tail, four feet and fur. There was also enough mystery and action to keep it interesting. I enjoyed discovering the world Thomas lived in and finding out why it happened. I have always loved to read, and this was so much fun. The author did a great job of making the characters come alive.
