I read the book in practically one sitting. Gives an overview of a woman daring to give meaning to her life against a culture. Fascinating to learn how much of her later writings in the nursing/ hospital area continue to influence even to today.

This was an interesting book for anyone interested in the beginning of nursing or making a life worth living. Florence Nightingale was a remarkable woman who dedicated her life to making things better for others.
Across the Nightingale Floor (Tales of the Otori - Book 1) :: Marrying Miss Marshal (Wild Wyoming Hearts Book 1) :: Nightingale (Crimson Romance) :: Shroud for a Nightingale (Adam Dalgliesh Mystery Series #4) :: Homecoming (Sweet Hearts of Sweet Creek Book 1)

The facts are all here, but the writing is wooden and gives no feeling of what Florence Nightengale, her Aunt Mai, her sister, and family were like as people. It was more like reading a term paper, and I was disappointed.

This was an easy and fast book to read, yet it was interesting as well as informative. I had not realized that Florence Nightengale's life went far beyond nursing to reforms that were so crucial in saving thousands of lives. I am amazed at the insight she had and her ability and persistence to pursue her dreams and make her beliefs reality. She did not care if she received credit for anything she proposed or did as long as the importance of her discoveries were implemented. And in the end she attributed all of her work as God's.

This is a very fast reading and interesting book about Victorian England. There was a very wide difference what working females and privledged
females. Those females of prevledge were for socializing , going to concerts etc and having children (but not necessarly raising them). Florence Nightingale did not fit the "standard" mold and wanted to do things and be educated.
Her work during the Crimeran War brought her to the attention to many people espically the British Army. She noted the very poor conditions in the army hospitals espically poor sanitation and ventulation besides crowed conditions. She wrote Notes on Hospitals indicating all the reforms needed to make hospitals places of healing and not places to die
All throughout the book we see Florence's interaction with many people and how she was accepted or not. She wrote Notes on Nursing to improve the place of nursing and established through the Nightingale Fund a Nursing school. After a slow start the school still is functioning today in England.
She was also involved with the British Army and their "rule" in India and issued the India Sanitary Report which indicated the same problems in hospitals and camps she had noted in Crimera mainly poor sanitiaion, ventalation etc. She also became involved with treating the India nation better and worked for their freedom from British rule.
She was doing her work before "germ discovery" and at first didn't want to accept what was being taught about germs and disease
During the later part of her life she was not well but kept right on being involved though she basically had visitors coming to her and not going out
Many of the reforms for hospitals and nursing she recommended are still being done today. In fact some of the procedures the Center for Disease Control uses are based in procedures developed by Florence Nightingale.
Hope you enjoy the book as much as I did.

I am certain that most of us only know Florence Nightingale as the "woman with the lantern", but, as you will learn from this book, she was far more than that. The impact that she had on the military and civilian healthcare systems in the UK, India, and the Empire in the late 19th century is nothing short of remarkable. Persistence and laser focus on what she wanted to accomplish should serve as an excellent example for all of us. Plus, although she could have led a Victorian life of leisure, she humbled herself to make life better for the sick, the diseased and the poor who surrounded her. She had an uncanny sense of how to get things done politically in a male dominated world and her efforts helped countless men and women avoid/overcome the diseases of her time. And, the heritage she left us of hospital management and procedures puts the medical community forever in her debt. Thank you Wyatt North for offering these concise and readable biographies. She truly was "A Life Inspired.."

The book is written in a very straightforward and unpretentious style. While some may consider the book lacking in detail, I found it an easy-to-read, engaging, chronological biography of an amazingly selfless and brilliant woman. Her theories on all aspects of healthcare ( literally from the floor up) and her influence has been so far reaching that it has touched all our lives. I learned so much!

'Florence Nightingale: A Life Inspired' reveals how the mark that Florence Nightingale set on both the field of medicine and human endeavor was set. I enjoyed the way the author conveyed her story. It was accessible, entertaining, and informative.
I would recommend this book to all considering the medical and/or nursing profession, parents of girl children, and men and women of all walks of life. She is still that important for the betterment of our human experience.
I rated this 5-Stars because of writing style, storyline and flow, and its impact that is still occurring today and tomorrow.

This is a book full of great, easily readable information not only on the inspiring life of Miss Nightingale, but perhaps even more importantly, her role in bringing our medical care a long way toward the state it is in today. We owe a great debt of gratitude to her! I highly recommend this book as an excellent addition to your personal library!

An informative and interesting book on a woman who made a large difference in the world. The book draws the reader into what Florence wanted to do selflessly for others. The modern healthcare system has much to thank her for her tireless work and great knowledge!

I was somewhat aware of Florence Nightingale, but until I read this book I had no true insight into her fabulous achievements and Victorian background. This book not only informed me about this marvelous woman but also gave me a better understanding of Victorian England and other cultures she was engaged in. A remarkable read.

I didn't know much about Florence Nightingale before reading this book and found it to be quite informative. She was born into a life of privilege but worked and dedicated herself to helping the less privileged. She might have been ahead of her time for some, but proved herself to be right on time for those who needed her most. She was definitely led A Life Inspired.

Florence Nightingale had a different life than most wealthy young women had at the time. She cost the way she wanted to live. She left a lasting and worthy legacy. This bio is interesting and easily read.

The biography of Florence Nightingale is a very informative text and delightful to read. It presents Florence Nightingale as the woman who raised nursing to a respectable profession for women during the Victorian Times. Moreover, she designed hospitals that saved lives rather then ones that increased deaths. If America had only known about the medical reforms that Florence Nightingale practiced and taught other nurses, thousands of soldiers' lives would have been saved during the Civil War. She broke out of the Victorian model for women and contributed so much to the medical field for nurses, that part of her nursing textbook is still relevant today.

Well written truly brings Florence Nightingale to life. We always think of nursing when you hear Florence she was so much more than that. She was a advocate for sanitary conditions in hospitals and homes etc. She is still a role model for woman of today and all that we can accomplish if only we stay true to our beliefs and convictions. Read this book to get to know this woman.

What I like about Wyatt North ebooks is that they usually have solid information, the book is not too long or too short, and their price. This book is no exception. Another solid book at a great price.

A short book, easily read in a couple of hours. That's all I can say on the plus side. Ms Hamilton has few if any skills as a writer, and none as an historian. The book appears to have been written as a text for high school students, and may indeed have value as a 'how not to write history' book, under the direction of a skilled teacher. A good copy editor would have taken out some of the more egregious mistakes, but half-baked feminism and religious intolerance would still remain to taint Hamilton's historical insight. Stop writing, stop wasting resources, get a real job.
