The beginning of the book was slow to start. I kept waiting for something to happen but I wasn't sure what. Definitely an unexpected ending. Once I got to the middle of the book I didn't want to put it down. I enjoyed watching Ryker soften as time went on and SO happy when he came back because I thought he was a goner.
Now I am anxiously waiting for book 2!!!

This book is what you would expect for 99c. Its good enough for me to read through and happily buy the next book but it had some issues. As with most urban fantasy the main character had a chip on her shoulder the size of Australia, a smart mouth which should but doesnt get her killed and special skills that made her a super unique snowflake. This required a fair bit of reality suspension on my behalf and resulted in more than a few eye rolls.
But once I got past those littlle blips and the couple of typos and sentence structure errors I really enjoyed the story. I think it could do with alot more refining and if I had of paid $15 I would have been annoyed but for 99c its a good little throw away story.

Good first book in the series from a favorite author of mine. She is definitely a good writer because while this takes place in the Darkness world, it's completely its own story. There is so much action in this, it keeps you entertained the whole time. The ending isn't too much of a cliffhanger and keeps you satisfied until the next one.

I did enjoy this book, but it only deserves three stars. There was not much romance, just sexual tension towards the end of the book. It ended on a cliffhanger to get you to buy the next book in the series, but since the love interest never developed I had no desire to read it.

I tried really hard to finish this book. I love books so much that it feels sacrilegious not to finish one. I just couldn't take it anymore! There is not one original plot or thought in the entire book. It's a mishmash of about a dozen cheap romance novels, the kind I used to buy for a dollar fifty in my youth. Worse, the author tells you the same thing about the main character's early life that I began to think she was using copy and paste. I don't recommend this book to anyone.

Unfortunately, I felt the author made the classic blunder of ruining what could have been a great book by over complicating the main character and yet still leaving them completely predictable.
The female lead couldn't seemed completely unstable. She was constantly switching from trying to be so bad ass that she came off more like a bitch, to so vulnerable that she's a helpless hysterical mess half the time. Her past always seemed to resurface every few pages and last forever, without telling us anything new about her. It made the character completely unbelievable, and halted the story's flow.
It's a real shame because the plot had potential until even it was taken over in order to make the female lead more complex. All the while, the male lead was left stereotypical and dry as a bone.
.... But I found the narcoleptic sprite monkey endearing.

This book would be a lot better if the author showed the heroine as a stronger character. She is "supposed" to be a tough chick with a hard life. The book mentions the abuse she received in the foster system that leads to her being a street fighter and thief. You sense her anger and her ego about her "badness" and "dark side", but the majority of the book really shows her as weak. I expected more fighting skills from her, but she just keeps getting captured, is unable to save her loved ones and only survives with the help of others. She doesn't show any sign of fighting until the end when she's forced by a bunch of thugs. She's been able to escape black ops government agents, dozens of powerful far but can't escape some human thugs? I expected more of a fight.

I did enjoy this story, but I just found the female leads story very frustrating. A strong female who had spent so much time fighting for survival, yet she is constantly getting her arse kicked, having to be rescued (eye roll).

Zoey, a tough and independent young woman, who has learned to fight for herself growing up in various foster homes, is a Collector working for a secret part of the government called the Department of Molecular Genetics (DMG). Together with her co-worker Daniel, with whom Zoey is desperately in love although he is considerably older and hasn’t been reciprocating her advances, they track and collect fae. However, when Seattle is devastated by a powerful, magical electrical storm, Zoey’s entire life changes, as she finds herself thrown together with Ryker, who is a Wanderer, a merciless and intimidating fae. Ryker hates humans. Zoey catches fae. Not a promising basis for a functioning relationship that both of them suddenly have to rely on.
City in Embers started out a bit strange in the way the characters, their backgrounds, and the world around them were introduced. It sort of threw you into the action and then took a step back, which was confusing at first, but in hindsight, actually worked well with regards to the plot development. I knew I had to listen to the second book long before finishing this one. I became so enthralled with the characters, the dystopian setting (cleverly linked to the author’s Darkness series), and the mystery surrounding the DMG, Daniel, and Zoey. I loved Sprig, the talking, narcoleptic monkey fae! His obsession with honey, his love for his cuddly toy, and some of his remarks were just absolutely adorable and so funny. There is no insta-love in this and no love triangle. Instead, there is a totally enthralling budding romance with a lot of sexual tension. Age-wise, I think this is New Adult material and should appeal to anybody who enjoys paranormal romances. I’ve previously listened to Stacey Marie Brown’s Darkness series. If you enjoyed that series, you are bound to love this one, too.
The narration by Amy Landon was excellent. She was a very good fit for Zoey, and I was happy with her male voices, too. Good acting, in particular when voicing Sprig, without overdoing it. Nice pacing and delivery. There were no problems with the quality of the audio production.

I was blown away by this book. I absolutely loved Zoey and Ryker along with their little buddy Sprig.
Zoey is in her early twenties which means she's still trying to find her place in this world, she's still trying to figure out exactly who she is. Most of her life has been spent hopping from home to home, with time spent on the streets. It wasn't nice or safe anywhere Zoey happened to get placed, she was always made to be a victim, except she got tired of being one. She got tired of being targeted and being taken advantage of so she became a survivor. She lived for herself until she met Lexie, her disabled little sister. Because of Lexi, Zoey wanted to be better, she wanted to create a real life for them. This kinda leads us into the present and the current state Zoey finds herself in. She's pretending to be someone she's not all in the hopes of being better and maybe settling down with one man in particular. However, it takes a disgruntled Viking man to show her maybe the real her isn't so bad.
Ryker's past is a mystery and his future is still unwritten. He's wanted by many, feared by even more and has no idea what patience is. He's pretty much the all around alpha we've come to love in this genre. He's sexy, he's fae, and he hates humans. Yikes! Being attached to Zoey may be more dangerous for this duo than everyone else chasing him.
The synopsis pretty much covers this story, so I'm not going to go into that. I am going to say this is a pretty gritty and violent at times Urban Fantasy that I really enjoyed. I'd recommend giving this a try, and yes, there is some sexual tension that'll drive you nuts!
I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

I am so glad that City in Embers found it's way into my life! I was drawn in from page one and couldn't turn the pages fast enough to find out what would happen next.
Zoey is a girl that has had a hard life. Nothing has ever gone right for her until she is starts working from the DMG. The DMG has changed Zoey and has provided hope for a life Zoey never thought possible. But it all is taken away in a blink of an eye or should I say a by a lighting strike. Zoey is now on the run for her life from the very people she used to work for. With no where to go, Zoey ends up relying on the very being she was taught to hate, a fee warrior named Ryker.
Stacey Marie Brown has done a masterful job of creating tensions and suspense in Zoey's and Ryker's journey. There is no rest for these two as they have to invade being captured by those who hunt them, as well as dealing with their mutual distrust and hate for each other.
I loved Ryker's and Zoey's journey throughout this book. They are two people who are stubborn and have such hate for each other, but as they spend more time together, they finally see the person behind the façade and this allows them to build a tentative friendship, first born out of need but develops into an unbreakable connection.
And I have to mention sprig. I love this character so hard. He has to be on of the best secondary characters ever created. I won't give to much away because you will want to find out about him as you are reading. I will say that Sprig is such a breath fresh air in this intense thrill ride and will have you laughing at unexpected moments.
City In Embers turned out to be a hidden gem and if you just give it a chance you will find your next great series.

Mark My Words Book Publicity and NetGalley provided me with an electronic copy of City In Embers, in exchange for an honest review.
Zoey Daniels and Daniel Holt are a team, collectors working together for almost three years on the city streets of downtown Seattle. Dr. Rapava, and more specifically, the Department of Molecular Genetics, pays them good money to capture and collect fae. Once living among humans, the world turned against magic, leaving researchers studying the benefits of using fae cells no choice but to hire people like Zoey and Daniel. Of the two of them, Zoey is impulsive one, running headlong into situations before help is in place. When something goes horribly wrong, will the hunter become the hunted?
This paranormal urban fantasy features a strong female main character, a fast paced plot, and a premise that has possibilities for future books. Although there are some familiar plot lines here, there is enough that makes it unique and stand out among other books in this genre. My favorite character is Sprig, the narcoleptic monkey sprite, as how can you not love a character that has the best dialogue in the book? I would be interested in learning more about the world created and the characters within, so I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

Wow! This book is definitely the way you want to start a series! It takes you into a world and describes it so well that you can feel like you're there with the characters.
Zoey has had a rough life going from foster home to foster home she finally found her place because of a foster sister when she was recruited into government agency helped locate and collect fae she believed she was doing the right thing.
When an electrical storm destroys the city it throws her world into chaos and she is left scrambling to put together the pieces and uncover the clues to help her figure out the truths that have been kept from her.
This story has it all from a fascinating new world with the fae and characters that really draw you in.
Zoey maybe a bit of a smart ass but she is tough, fierce, and strong and it has helped her to survive.
All the characters were so well described that they were truly a physical force inside your mind so you could get a clear picture on them. The story also kept me captivated to the pages wondering what would happen next and throwing in so many twists and turns that you never knew what would happen next!
Fantastic read! Loved every bit of it and came wait to read the rest!

City in Embers will be that book of 2015 to which I compare all others. This is a debut novel for The Collector's series that can be shortly summarized in a paranormal novel about human Collectors and the Fae. Zoey is an amazing character packed full of spice and vinegar. Having learned to be a survivor at a young age she is a force to be reckoned with. There are two other main characters, but this was a unique twist that had us following a main character about half way through, and then it switches up on us. I was not quite sure what to think of this at the moment, but as the story builds and familiarity increases in the second half I was fully supportive. I think this was essential to building this story so creatively, and I think it was excellent risk to take. The conclusion definitely full the remaining holes, and solidify the story line in detail. It has been a very long time since I delved into a paranormal novel that builds a story for the ages, and leaves me anticipating a series that will most likely cover many installments. I see the web of framework that this one powerful novel as spread, and I am so thrilled to see where it will go. Ryker and Zoey definitely have the friction that leaves us eager for more, but be aware it will not happen here. While I can always enjoy a nice smutty book this is not one of them. This is not just a story it is an adventure, or better yet an alternate reality for readers. Packed full of fascinating characters and side lined with this invigorating story line this series is not a choice, but an addiction you must explore. Stacey Marie is not an author that I am familiar with, but she most definitely made her mark. I see that she has some other series, and it will be my mission to read them as well. If her other works prove as successful as this experience she will be my new favorite. It has been a long time coming, but talented work such as this are rare. Not everyone can create stories of such perfection. ~BookWhisperer Reviewer Jax~

tacey Marie Brown wowed me with her Darkness series so I was thrilled to see that she has started a new series and she really comes through with this one too.
City in Embers is set in the same world as the Darkness series so we are already aware of what kind of people/species that we will meet and the tensions that start to happen between humans, Fae and such. What we didn’t know was that some humans already knew of the Fae’s existence – the government in fact – and has a special government agency which captures Fae and uses them for experiments that will better humankind and hopefully create cures for all that ails them. In order to catch them, they first have to see them and that is where our heroine – Zoey Daniels – comes into play, she has the sight, she can recognise Fae from their aura and along with her partner – Daniel – they make an awesome team who always get their mark. Zoey’s homelife isn’t great and the only things that keep her where she is, is Daniel – who she secretly loves – and her foster sister Lexie who is paralysed and in a wheelchair and the driving force of her taking the job with the agency because if there’s a cure to be found for Lexie, then she’s in the best place to make sure she gets it.
Whilst Zoey and Daniel are out on the hunt for a Fae, they uncover something big happening but also find themselves outnumbered and needing to fight for their lives…… but then the storm hits and the lightning strikes and Zoey’s world is turned upside down so that not only is she dealing with devastating loss, she ends up running for her life…. With one hot Fae wanderer known as Ryker on her tail because she has something of his…. And he wants it back!
Zoey was a cool character, very tough and a ‘what you see, is what you get’ kind of girl. She is not a soft woman who needs love or a man to make her complete, she is more than capable of looking after herself but her love for her foster sister and partner add a softness to her that shows us a vulnerable side so that the reader can connect to her. She’s had it bad but will be a better person for those she considers family, she is selfless and will risk it all regardless of consequence. The way she sees Fae is put to the test with the arrival of Ryker, she has something of his that he wants and will stalk her until he gets it, Zoey is forced to run from everything she knows and ends up having to team up with the enemy making them an unlikely pairing – both can’t stand each other and they aren’t afraid to let that show but over the course of the book will start to understand and soften their views about each other.
As I mentioned earlier, I was thrilled to find out about this series because I adored the Darkness series and know what the author can do. I was even more excited when I saw that we were in a different part of the world we had already heard about in the other series and that they were connected by the massive storm which gives us some common ground and a sense of familiarity to the story. This also gave us a view into the aftermath of the storm and how it affected peoples’ lives giving the story a dystopian feel. I liked the fact that it shows us how others know about the Fae, I had no idea that the government knew and even had their own agency to ‘deal’ with them which will automatically make a ‘them against us’ scenario for humans and Fae. I also liked that the story challenges the characters view and beliefs, in stories such as these, there a never clear cut good guys and bad guys – it’s a matter of perspective and knowledge and that is what Zoey must find out. She is predisposed to think that all Fae are evil just as Ryker is against humans but what happens when neither can count on their ‘side’? The lines become blurred and it’s a matter of survival until all of the dots can be connected. The story is very much a run and chase scenario, many enemies are hunting for Zoey and Ryker which has them in a LOT of life threatening situations that really amps up the excitement and tension in the book and the action and fight scenes are awesome too. Zoey and Ryker need to count on each other and those type of situations form strong bonds and through this we also see them softening towards each other but there wasn’t much in the way of romance….. but knowing Stacey… there will be a lot of tension before we get to see any sexytime. This is a fab read though and if you loved the Darkness series, you will love this too.

I am telling you Stacey is an author to read and watch. I am so surprised with this book, though I knew I shouldn't be since I loved her last series. My first reaction after getting to the end was Holy Hell that is the grand canyon of cliffhangers. Jesus Stacey, how can you leave us hanging like that?!?! just when we were really starting to warm up to the possibilities. holy sheezus.
ryker and zoe. enemies, right? out should be. heartbroken. lost. wrongfully accused. on the run. hometown in shambles. no where to go. no one to turn to. no one to trust. zoe has nothing. she needs ryker, and he needs her ...alive. the idea of these two getting along s just driven into your brain over and over through this book. Its never gonna happen. slowly you street kind of hoping it does. little by little as he opens up and you get to see the other side to him, maybe even his mute human side, you really start to like him more and more. You really start to wonder if they will act on all this sexual tension. then you get reminded how badly zoe is hurt or why ryker really keeps her around. each time, my heart kinds deflated a little. I really like the idea of something more coming from they're strange relationship. and sprig, who doesn't love that thing???
you know what I absolutely love about this book? it's Staceys ability to create this other world, this world that I knew can't ever really exist, but she makes it feel so real. she makes it seem like I'm watching the story unfold as if I were watching everything happen from a window. she just had this way of sucking you in to these alternate universes that have all this really bad s*** going in, the hottest of guy s, and it makes you wanna wish you can have just one for the night.
SMB is on my authors to watch list. if you were smart, you'd add her to yours too.

I have to admit as a person who is not exactly a romance fan I was cautious going into this with the cover, but the summary sounded exactly like something I would enjoy. The book does start out with Zoey explaining her job and how much she is in love with her co-worker who is twice her age. Needless to say I was a bit worried that the story would be mostly romance off the bat, but the romance did not, in fact rule the story.
During a battle early on in the book Zoey becomes impregnated by a magical strike of lightening. It just so happens that the magic had to be taken from somewhere, enter Ryker. Ryker hates humans but until he can restore his magic, Zoey is not going to leave his side. Along the way they pick up a talking Money, Sprig who adds the majority of the humor to the story.
During the crazy storm, Seattle is devastated and the city is now an apocalyptic dead zone. Zoey and Ryker are not only being hunted by her company DMG for becoming pregnant with a Fae, but also Garrett who is after Ryker, so they have nowhere to turn for help.
I really enjoyed this story, the writing and pacing was perfect and kept me entertained every minute. There was one particular part in the storyline later on in the book that I felt was a bit out of place with the direction the book was taking us, but could be easily willing to forgive if that storyline continued into more depth in a future installment. Also when Zoey becomes captive and pregnant she seems to lose a lot of the character bad ass build up and I wish she was a bit more bold and defiant.
Overall definitely a book I would recommend, very entertaining and action packed with great combination of characters.
4 Stars I received a free copy for review for participating in the blog tour.

First of all let me say that Stacey Mary Brown write divinely.
Her style is poetic and evocative. She is really able to bring you in a magical world through few brushstrokes.
Her characters are strong, but above all they are survivors.
Zoey Daniels is an orphan, grows up too fast. After years of streets fighting and theft, she seems to find an equilibrium living with her foster mother and sister Lexie, confined to a wheelchair.
Zoey works for a special government agency, DMG, that catches, researches and testes Fae to save human lives. Fae are enemies: cruel creatures that used humans for their purposes. Or almost that’s what she believes.
Thanks to her ability of seeing fae’s aura, Zoey is one of the best collectors.
Her co-worker is Daniel, a forty man that she loves since he was her trainer. He seems not reciprocate her feelings, but Zoey is determined to change his mind.
During an op, Daniel was killed by a fae and Zoey was struck by a lighting. A terrible electric storm, in fact, destroys Seattle. Unfortunately the lighting that has struck Zoey, has also connected her to Ryker, a giant Viking-like fae. The connection transfers some of Ryker’s powers to Zoey.
From that moment the fae and Zoey are forced to be together. Ryker because he want his powers back, Zoey because she has no place to stay and no one to trust.
In few hours Zoey has lost all people she loves: Daniel and Lexie, died during the electric storm. But she also becomes an enemy for the DMG’s group. Her co-workers believe she was a traitress, sexually involved with a fae. So the hunter becomes hunting.
The plot is interesting, but at the end, what makes the difference is the writing. Believe me when I say you could smell Seattle burning. Who else will be able to create a complex character like Ryker who speaks so little? It’s the case to say that the silence speaks more than words with Ryker.
In my opinion the main theme is “How does it scare what we don’t know?”
«Don’t get high and mighty with me human. You think of fae no better than I think of humans». A chill filled my belly. there was truth in his statement. as much as I didn’t want to admit it, I did consider fae inferior. Testing on another species to help my own, even if it caused pain to one, benefited mine. Human life, especially with having a disable sister, was worth more to me than species I had been trained to despise .
And what does it happen when we start knowing the enemy? What does it happen when we discover that he understands us more than who we loved?
All the story goes on multiple layers:
1) Zoey’s feelings. Her love for Daniel and the sense of betrayal when she starts feeling a deep connection with Ryker.
2) Ryker’s powers. He is no more the powerful fae he is used to be. Part of him hates Zoey for stealing is powers but another one loves her… I think more than he can truly admit to himself.
3) Fae plan to destroy human
4) DMG plan to destroy fae.
As you can see City in Embers is an amazing story and you will have a hard time putting it down.
I must warn you that if you are looking for a romance full of sex and lust this is not your book.
Every time someone (especially one) seems to be about kiss Zoey, Mary Stacey Brown makes happen something. She is a horrible woman, because she makes us want almost a kiss, just one… but not! Never one! Naughty, naughty, naughty. :-)
I crave for Ryker’s kiss!

A sexy, brooding fae, a woman who has lost everything and suddenly has magic and is being hunted? What's not to like? :D oh and oh my god, Sprig is the bestest, cutest sidekick ever!!!
The book started strong, it slowed down considerably for a while, but once I got past that I didn't put it down till the end!
I liked the book and will absolutely read the rest of the series! I feel that with book 1 we got to know Zoey pretty well, got glimpses of what kind of guy/fae our Viking really is and some precious memories from his past, so hope to find out a bit more about the plot, the stone and the bad guys in book 2.
The Barrier Between... here I come!

An enjoyable adventure full of dangerous and fun twists and turns that kept me guessing till the very end. I really like the storyline and found can't wait to discover what happens to the characters that definitely grew on me.
I'll admit that I wasn't in love with the story right away but once I got into it I couldn't stop!
The characters had a way of growing on me and I loved the comical humor that Sprig provided. Zoey was a spirited lead that was flawed but was still kickbutt. Ryker's character was a sexy beast who I can't wait to read more about. I love the depth the characters had and their different quirks.
I look forward to reading and discovering more about this new world and of the course the characters.

This book was fantastic!
Thanks to Stacey for the read along invite in her newsletter! I couldn't pass up because I have been dying to read this series and glad I had a ton of people to talk to about!
I fell in love with this story, trust me I also cried. Zoey's loses and sacrifice's are heartbreaking but the fact that she meets Sprig (Read to find out who he is) and Ryker have definitely changed her point of view on life , the people she works for, and how she feels about the Fae world.
With enemies coming from all directions they have no choice but to rely on each other.
I recommend this story to everyone who loves a book filled with magic, tragedy, humor, and action all in one book.

City in Embers is the first book in a new paranormal action series, called the Collectors. As you may know, Stacey Marie Brown's Darkness series is one of my favorite New Adult paranormal series. The Collectors is set in the same world as that one and the electrical storm caused by the Dae in the Darkness series is what has rocked Seattle, where the main characters are on the run in City of Embers. Which I thought was the perfect crossover between the two worlds. It really added to the atmosphere throughout the story, and it was a cool throwback that fans of the Darkness Series would get. But you absolutely do not need to read the darkness series to get this one. They are very separate, with all new characters. I thought this book had a very different feel than the Darkness series. One that I ended up really enjoying. (But the Darkness Series is still my favorite.)
Zoey grew up really bad off in the foster system. I didn't particularly love how stereo typically cruel her foster parents were but you get over it because so many other things start to happen that they fade into the background very quickly. There is a lot of fast paced action once you got into the book a little ways. I had a really hard time getting into this book. It took me maybe 18-20% mark on my kindle before I really started to like the story. It was all up hill from there, but I took me a while to get interested. So if that happens to you, don't give up on the book! It gets so so much better!
Ryker and Zoey had an interesting relationship. I liked that they really disliked each other for most of the book, and only later on did they come to realize that they cared for the other person. And even so, this thing they had (I don't even want to call it a romance, not yet.) was never anything close to warm and mushy. They are two tough cookies that don't like opening up to other people. So when they tell each other something from their past, that is about as mushy and romantic as they get. And it works for them. I liked that the focus was much more on the running and the action than it was on these two and their romance. Now, that is not to say that I don't want to see more of them together in the future, because I do. But for the first book this worked.
I loved that the fae and creatures were consistent with Stacey's darkness series. And I loved how much action there was this book. I have no idea where the next book is going to take us because there was one heck of a cliffhanger at the end of this one. But most of all, I am glad that I didn't give up on this book, like I wanted to more than once, because I ended up really liking it a lot.
*Disclaimer- I got a copy of this book for free in exchange for my honest review. I was not compensated for my thoughts.

I received this book as a gift
City of Embers is an unexpected thrill ride, packed with surprises that will throw and shock you into a serious adrenaline rush. Complete and utter captivation.
PROS:
Zoey is fierce. Her resilience is powerful and admirable. She’s daring and beautiful, she wields so much strength. She fights tooth and nail for her life and those she loves. Her past is full of bad decisions made to survive and horror story foster homes. It’s amazing how far she’s come and with such confidence in her ability. Emotions are volitile and when Zoey crashes, it’s brutal and hard. Zoey learns to trust and open her heart when she least expects it. Sarcastic, short-fused and prone to flying fists, Zoey is a take charge, risk-taker that shields her emotions with her words and dirty street fighting.
Zoey and Ryker have killer chemistry. The violent, explosive kind that leaps off the pages and pushes the story forward in a series of lust and unfulfilled desire. The angst is a drug that will leave you feeling tipsy and dissatisfied but thirsting for more. They’re aggressive, angry, they throw punches and insults but the heat is constant. Despite a lifetime of learned hatred for their opposing species, their mutual loss and hardheaded tendencies bring them together.
Sprig is hilarious. The pervy little sprite is energetic, daring and completely adorable with his honey addiction and off-kilter TV references. It’s easy to fall in love with his spirit and playfulness even though he’s a constant source of disruption that effectively blocks the culmination of Ryker and Zoey’s feelings. The frustration is INTENSE.
The violence is extreme. The bloodshed is extensive and graphic, deaths come fast and action scenes escalate so quickly it’s hard to keep up. The story is fast-paced and moves even though here are lags the danger is ever-present.
The story does contain triggers. Zoey’s past is dark, full of heartache and abuse but it is not really detailed, more suggestive than blunt. There are a few scenes that feature assault. I appreciated that the author included just enough without flashbacks.
Variety of fae and powers was quirky and inventive. Each character, no matter how small or fleeting has unique features and dominant traits. They’re all memorable and that’s quite a feat.
CONS:
Relationships and love, whether it be sisterly or sexual were a huge part of what made Zoey tick and yet, the back story was abrupt and felt insignificant to grasp their connection. Yes, you could feel the love and longing but it wasn’t as poignant as it could have been.
Zoey’s life as a collector and what they do as an organization was missing its history for most of the plot. When it was revealed it was a rapid-fire info session and the climax was like a slap in the face revelation.

*I received this Advanced Reader Copy in exchange for my honest review*
I hadn't read too many books about fae in the past, but City in Embers was definitely a great introduction to that world! The mystery behind DMG intrigued me, the romance had my stomach fluttering, and the end had me worried for what is yet to come! When The Barrier Between (Collector #2) comes out, you can bet I'm going to get my hands on it ASAP!
What I enjoyed:
Ryker.
(spoilers ahead) In all honestly, I was pleased after reading the passage that would end Zoey and Daniel's relationship. I'm sorry but a 22 year old madly in love with a 40 year old-- it was a little awkward for me. Little did I know, the best part of that romance ending was the introduction of Ryker. *Swoon. Ryker, sigh. At first, I remember thinking "he sounds like a caveman on steroids". Silly me. Stacey Marie Brown, must be some kind of wonderful because by the end, I was thinking "good lord, Ryker is perfection".
The steaminess.
The sexual tension between Zoey and Ryker had me giggling like a giddy little schoolgirl. There was something so satisfying in picturing myself as Zoey, curled up against a rugged, muscular man with my head perfectly fitting in the crook of his arm. Sigh, bliss.
No insta-love.
In City in Embers there is no love lost between humans and fae. Sure enough, when Zoey and Ryker first met, they spent most of their time insulting each other. With time, conversations were had, secrets and pasts were shared, and you could see the walls coming down. I enjoyed the slow progression of their relationship. It was a nice change from the various insta-romances I have read in the past.
Sprig.
Who wouldn't love a narcoleptic, honey fiending, comic relief providing half-monkey, half-sprite?
The plot twist.
I don't want to give anything away, so let me just say I read that particular passage with my mouth wide open in shock. I really hope they find a way around this!
What could have been a bit better:
The beginning.
I'm not sure if it's just me, but I had to read a few pages before I became used to the writing style. I read the first page, felt confused as to what I had just read, and had to reread the page again. The first few pages are very action-packed, however, so this may have a lot to do with it.
Lexie & Daniel.
(spoilers ahead) I feel a little regret in saying that I felt nothing in their deaths. I don't want to feel this way! I want to care! I want to shed a tear or two! It was just difficult to care for characters whose time in the book was so short-lived because of the storm. I do understand, though. There was a lot of story to tell after the storm.
Overall, an enjoyable read!

Again Stacey has delivered a book that sucked me in! City of Embers is a book that will take you on a adventure you will not forget!
Zoey oh Zoey what a bad break this chick gets. I felt so sorry for her but loved that she was so strong through most of it! After losing everything and being stuck with the one thing she has been trained to hate, Zoey will have to find a way to stay alive with a Fae named Ryker after a event that transfers his powers to her.
Oh this book is just that good, from the first page to the last it will leave you breathless and excited and much more! I love books like that, and I think everything I have read from Stacey is like that! You get a world after it’s destroyed and a girl looking for answers to her life she always thought she knew.
Ryker, the wanderer, and Zoey the human what a pair! They will fight there true self and the others to get answers and its so FUN to read! There journey is one to not miss and I cant wait to read book 2 because I know its only going to be that much better!! ;) Thanks Stacey for another amazing read!

City in Embers is an action-packed urban fantasy featuring lots of fascinating magical creatures and an addicting plot. Zoey is a kick-ass heroine with a traumatic past, coupled with an uncommon ability to see fae when most humans can't. Add in an adorable half-sprite/half monkey sidekick and you have the makings of a fun read.
The beginning of the novel was almost overwhelming. So much information so quickly, like massive info-dump. Whew-- it was rather exhausting. Once I was past this rocky start, things settled down into a better pace. The story was so interesting: the DMG, fae existing among humans, government experiments, and most of all Ryker.
What can I say about Ryker? He was the total alpha male-- you know the kind you hate at first due to his masculine nonsense but come to love by the end. The romance between Ryker and Zoey was hot and progressed over time. Considering they started off on opposite sides, the slower progression was needed to be believable.
I enjoyed the intriguing fantasy world created by Ms. Brown-- our world yet so very different. Nonstop action and unfolding secrets kept the pages turning. There were times when I found Zoey's backstory to be a tad draining... let's just say she had a rough life. Thank goodness there was the little sidekick to lighten the mood.

City in Embers is action pack with LOTS of sexual tension. This book will hook you in just a few short pages. It has everything a reader wants; A HOT sexy Alpha male that doesn’t take anything lying down, a heroin that can not only talk the talk but walk the walk. Also, the supporting characters are well formulated to give the story depth and excitement. This is by far a 10 star read! There are twists and turns that will not only shock you but please as well.
Stacey Marie Brown is able to construct a setting and story that allows readers see and feel the characters anguish and triumph over their adversaries. She takes you on an emotional roller coaster ride. I laughed and cried with the characters. By far my favorite character is Sprig the sprite. He is so cute and funny.
I just loved this book and I can’t until the next installment. City in Embers is awesome start to the series!

First off I would like to thank Stacey for the Autographed Books I loved the series, I think she has great Potential as becoming a up rising Author.
I must say the only draw back I have of the series is I think she dragged out the suspense a little to much in some areas like she was trying to figure out what she wanted to happen next. Don't get me wrong I love on the edge of your seat, but i felt like there where to many staggers. All in all
great story line and loved how the series ended. I really hate when books drag on and you end up reading 14 books that must feel like fillers to the great ending, with Stacey's books I didn't feel like that.

I really enjoyed this story! It was so action packed and just gave all the feels!
Zoey is such a great lead character, she has been through so much in her life and watching her try do better while not only reliving her past but learning from it is great! The whole story line about where she works is cool too, seeing it from the humans perspective gave a new spin on this world.
I love Ryker as well, a big great viking who definitely helped out with the story and took us on some adventures, plus I mean he is gorgeous!
The world building was great, setting up the story with great writing, made this for a super easy read, love!

great story line and loved how the series ended. I really hate when books drag on and you end up reading 14 books that must feel like fillers to the great ending, with Stacey's books I didn't feel like that.

One thing I’ve learned about Stacey Marie Brown? She never disappoints. I loved her Darkness series and now I’m in love with the Collector series too.
If you’ve read the Darkness series, you’ll know that City in Embers takes place right before and after the Electrical Storm caused at the end of Darkness of Light.
Zoey Daniels has been tossed around from one foster home to the other for most of her life. And she has seen some unimaginable horrors that no girl should. She was used to having no home and no family, but all that changes when she is put in the same foster home as Lexi, a crippled, wheelchair bound girl. Zoey finds a sister and best friend in Lexi. Lexi is what inspires her to turn her life around and make something of herself. Soon after high school, Zoey is recruited by a super secret government agency called Department of Molecular Genetics (DMG).
Zoey is a powerful Seer, a person gifted with the Sight. She can see the true form of the fae, she can see behind the disguise they put for the sake of the humans. She is a collector for DMG. What does it mean you ask! She apprehends fae and takes them back to the lab so that they could be researched, tested, and used to save human lives. She has no sympathy whatsoever for any of the fae. She has been taught that they are monstrous beats and are to be despised. It is here that she meets the love of her life, Daniel. Another reason to become a better person and live a better life.
But when the Electrical Storm hits Seattle, her life is completely tossed around. She lost the only people she cared about. I didn’t much care about Daniel’s death as he wasn’t the guy for Zoey. She was a complex girl with hidden dark tendencies. She only presented to Daniel the kind of woman he wanted to see. He never would have been able to accept Zoey exactly as she is. I was sad about Lexie’s death though. She was a free-spirited, fun girl. Despite her disability, she tried to live her life to the fullest. And for a 12-year-old she really had a dirty mouth on her.
The devastation that hits Seattle, completely turns her life around, as Zoey finds herself joined at the hip with a Wanderer, Ryker and a monkey-sprite, Sprig. With Ryker comes a hoard of other problems. What ensues a hate-hate and then a love-hate relationship between Ryker and Zoey and an uneasy, awkward acquaintance. Now that Zoey is on the other end of the knife, with the hunter becoming the hunted, Zoey has to run from not only the DMG but also from the men out to hurt Ryker.
Zoey was a strong woman. She was dealt too many bad hands, but she came out a survivor through it all. It is hard not to respect her and even admire her. Every time she fell, she got back up and fought back.
Right now, while writing this review and listening to music, it suddenly hit me that these few lines from Katy Perry’s Roar explains who and what Zoey is perfectly.:
You held me down, but I got up (HEY!)
Already brushing off the dust
You hear my voice, you hear that sound
Like thunder gonna shake the ground
You held me down, but I got up (HEY!)
Get ready ’cause I’ve had enough
I see it all, I see it now
I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter, dancing through the fire
‘Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar
Louder, louder than a lion
Another favourite character was Sprig, the monkey-sprite. He was just so adorable. He provided the much-needed respite from all the sadness and heavy-duty stuff going on in the book. I think he was also the reason why Zoey and Ryker didn’t kill each other. Sprig and his love for honey was just plain adorable. And for some unexplainable reason he knew a lot about blue balls. Makes you wonder. Huhh!
Ryker. What should I say about Ryker? Well he certainly was a big pain in the behind, but he grows on you. He treated Zoey like dirt calling her human, as if that was an insult. To him it was. But that’s okay. Soon he gets his head out of his lovely tush, at least halfway out. Once you find out more about his past who understand why he is the way he is. Ryker, like Zoey, is a complex character and Stacey has a knack for writing complex characters. Her characters are never easy. They are never black and white. They are always, always complex and with shades of grey. And why shouldn’t they be, real life can be a bitch and people are not always about rainbows and unicorns. She has proved this point all through City in Embers. The dichotomy of life is there for you to see. The ugly truth is staring you in the face and you can’t walk away from it. In fact, in this book you see more of the ugly side of life than the pretty one.
The action, the buildup, the emotions, the characters. Nothing about this book was a disappointment or predictable. At no point in the book could I guess the turn of events. Stacey reels you in through her masterful storytelling. Her world building is perfect. She doesn’t dump info on you and neither does she give you too little. With her kind of writing, it’s hard to keep the book down. In fact as soon as I finished it, I wanted the second book right then. If you haven’t read it, go read it. You won’t be disappointed.

How have I not reviewed this book yet? (Into the corner of shame i go...in my defense though. ..I jumped right into book#2) Oh my goodness I was hooked! There is so much that happens in this that keeps you on your toes and wanting more! The leading lady is a strong one...and I admire that! She is thrown in a crappy situation left and right but manages to figure out a way to get through. ..even if not on top. There is tension, angst, heartache....so so much to love in this! There are a lot of questions that you'll have at the end...but isn't that the fun part? Wanting more?
Don't even get me started on Sprig...I want one! Want to know what a sprig is? GO READ THIS BOOK!!!

Just when I thought I was tired of reading stories with bad boys, enter Ryker! This is my introduction to Stacey Marie Brown and I have to say I was not disappointed. I will admit, the story starts off a bit slow with Zoey and her "woe is me" stories, but as you continue reading... you start to understand why she's the way she is. Zoey is a human and Ryker is a Wanderer. As a Fae creature he has powers. His power is to "jump" wherever he wants. He travels through space and time. One day there is a storm and it transfers Ryker's power to Zoey. So they travel together with a sprite (that looks like a monkey and he talks... and he's a narcoleptic... who possibly has ADD and addicted to honey) to see how they can transfer Ryker's power back to him.
The flow of the book was great. Scenes between Ryker and Zoey are fascinating. I can't wait to see where this goes.

Everything changed with the BOOM!
Zoey is a foster kid making it on her own. She has a job she loves, is going to school, has a sister she adores, and a guy that has stolen her heart. Working as a fae collector she gets the action she craves as well as fulfillment for helping her fellow humans cure disease and become better on the whole. While tracking a group of fae she meets the Viking-esque colossal known as Ryker. That is when the world shifts and everything she thought she knew changes.
This is a quick book. A lot of running and hiding. Snarky comments and fighting for what you feel is right. City in Embers leaves you on a number cliff hangers eager to find out more!
I am looking forward to book 2!

City In Embers is the first book in the Collector Series, which follows the events from Stacey Marie Brown's Darkness series, but from another perspective. The series is a completely different story, from the characters, to the locations, narrative perspective and even writing style. Often in this type of set up, the 'voices' of the narrating character just aren't different enough for me to distinguish them when I think back over the books. Not the case here, Stacey Marie Brown has this down to a fine art, if I didn't know the worlds in her series were linked I could believe that the series were written by two people.
I loved the Darkness series, but I think City In Embers has done the impossible and filled the Eli shaped hole in my life. The characters are complex, unpredictable and above all likeable! I don't use that word lightly, I genuinely love this genre but it is quite a feat to create female leads that don't frustrate me.
I've read a huge amount of books in this category but this author stands out. This is the start of an expertly woven story and it captivated me from the very start.
City In Embers is full of action, comedy and you won't believe me when I say it: it's hotter than Eli!

I am impressed with this series! First of all, I NEVER read Fae or Vampire fantasy books. I'm just not into them, but this one got my interest piqued. It kind of reminded me of the Road to Hell series by Brenda K. Davies, which was excellent. Second, I've never read a story where the main character was not who I expected it to be. That's refreshing. And there is also plenty of comedic relief. I couldn't put this down!

I really enjoyed the first installment in this series! I have never read any books like this before and it intrigued and hooked me from the start. I am excited to dive into the rest of them to see what happens with these characters and what lies ahead for them. This book was filled with action, suspense, magic, tragedy and all sorts of other things that kept me on the edge and turning the pages!

What a pleasant surprise this book was in the end. It has all I’ve wanted: I spunky female lead, a ferocious fae warrior, an apocalyptical setting in today’s USA, a fast moving plot with some surprising turns and an adorable fae familiar in the guise of a monkey. The little guy made my day, every time. And take a closer look at the cover! Aint't it beautiful? Better as some covers that I have seen lately with male nippels in the center.
Oh and the romance was brilliant. Even though they are not even kissing there were several moments when you could feel the heat coming of the pages. What I love most about this book? There is no insta-love, not even an instant attraction. They are both standing on opposite sides: Zoey is like the fae equivalent of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and La Femme Nikita. Zoey is hired by a special government agency, the Department of Molecular Genetics (DMG) to find and collect fae in Seattle because of her special talent: She is one of the few humans who can actually see through the glamour. Ryker is the fae warrior she is paired up with, a freak mix somewhere between V’lane from the Fever series, Merle Dixon from The Walking Dead and Travis Fimmel as Ragnar Lothbrok in The Vikings. Zoe hates fae and Ryker hates the humans. Unfortunately for both, they have no other choice but to work together. Bit by bit their prejudices and hate for each other vanish and there is a growing respect and a fragile friendship blooming instead. I am so much looking forward to see how this will ripen in the next book.
The only thing that I have to criticize is the bumpy beginning. I almost gave up reading the book to be honest. There was just so much info-dumping in the first few chapters! The first person narration did not help in that moment either and there were so many confusing bits and pieces: Daniel her instructor with whom Zoey has fallen in love, her sister who is disabled and sick, the crazy professor from DMG, Zoeys backstory a foster kid… On and on it went this telling and not showing, recounting past events. I felt breathless alone from reading it. I feel like a different approach to telling the background history and kind of starting the book a little bit later might have been better. But 15% into the story the action really takes off and makes for an enjoyable, suspenseful read.

Reading a story that is based in my home state is always a bonus for me. When I picked up the book that I received for my September month book club from Fandom Adventures and started into it I was pleasantly surprised. As I continued to read I was taken into an awesome world of fantasy and reality where a girl named Zoey has struggled through life and overcome hardships to become a strong kick butt warrior. Most books where one overcomes hardships is enjoyable for me to read. The ability to also change how one sees people based on what we were taught and to listen to our hearts shows how we overcome many of the different prejudices in the world. I really enjoyed reading the first book in the series so much that I bought and downloaded the rest of the books. I highly recommend reading this book.

From the first page on I wanted to find out more about these characters. Zoey is a strong, smart , resourceful character. She had such a rough life in foster care before joining the DMG. Ryker tries to be the emotionless, tough guy but who really does care. I like the fact that this book takes place in todays Seattle. The writting and the world the author creates is very good. I look forward to reading the next book.

I really enjoyed the fresh storyline and I loved Zoeys fire and strength. Sprig was the comedy relief but sometimes he went a bit overboard. Ryker was pretty mean in the beginning but couldn't resist Zoeys fiesty spirit for long. I don't like when the author uses one. Word. Sentences. She did this quite. A. Few. Times. No one talks like that. I am looking forward to the remaining books and what other trouble Zoey can get into.

Everyone needs a talking monkey. This book has everything!! It was funny, exciting, suspenseful, action packed, and a sweet love story with the cutest monkey!! The story line is so intriguing and the mystery of the back story has only started to be uncovered. Once I started this story I couldn't put it down. It was so exciting I couldn't tear myself away. I can't wait for the next book and find out what happens next. An amazing 5 star paranormal read you don't want to miss!!

After reading the Darkness series, I read Collectors, and I was SO wary about reading about humans and DMG. However...I fell in love with the Collectors series, probably even faster than I did Darkness. Ryker is just the right amount of rugged and sexy, he makes the perfect partner for Zoey. Sprig gives a lot of comedic relief and he's adorable. You'll fall in love with them. SMB outdoes herself again ???

When I picked up this ebook, it was mostly for the cover. The brief summary sort of attracted me but not much. I actually had this ebook for weeks before I began reading. What a pleasant surprise this book turned out to be! I'm not a fan of fairy/fae stories but this one was so action filled that I forgot the whole fae aspect. Also, the budding relationship between Zoey and Ryker makes this a page-turner. Can't wait to read the next book of the series

Sometimes on the rare occasion I read a book that's out of my normal genre. This book was one of them. This is the first book I've read by this author. It was a little slow for me at the beginning but maybe that's because I had to read slower and kinda concentrate (and maybe look up some words in the dictionary).
However once I got my head into it I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to reading book two.
This book has taught me that I should branch out to different genres as this was an unexpected good surprise for me.

Another great story written by the very talented Stacey Marie Brown! After finding out about this spin-off of her Darkness Series, I couldn't wait for City in Embers to come out. Zoey and Ryker are wonderful and I love how this book builds up to what we foresee as a budding relationship rather than jumping right in. Stacey's ability to weave wonderful tales is in full force in City in Embers. The painting of Zoey's back story through memories and dreams provided a great way to keep the story moving while making the reader fall more deeply in love with her. Ryker provides the hot, dangerous sex appeal Stacey is best known for writing and he is definitely a character we soon find ourselves going "all in." And let me not forget to mention one of my favorite characters, a little sprite named Sprig. Sprig was given some of the greatest lines and comebacks the book offered. Definitely someone I would love to hang out with! If you are a fan of Stacey's Darkness Series, this first new book in the Collector's Series will not dissapoint!

Fantastic start to a new series! Loved how the the relationship between Zoey and Ryker 'the Viking' developed throughout the book. Sprig was a funny little monkey spirte who just sounded adorable and made me laugh. As you find out more about the characters, especially Zoey, you really start to feel for her situation and the life she has had - it adds to her strong and resilient character and helps you to understand her better. This book has plenty of action and fighting that will have your heart racing as you turn the pages waiting to see what happens. Can't wait to read the next one to find out how the story pans out!

Please RateCity In Embers (Collector Series Book 1)
There are a lot of passages that don't serve any purpose except to fill pages.
The characters just ran around in circles, without any purpose or making any sense. I supposedly strong, determined Hero is lead on a merry chase, floundering distractedly about without any regard to his own problems or purpose. He only came across as scattered. The heroine is anoying, melodramatic, repetitive in her pity parties and condescending life lessons. The last part of the novel went from bad to awful in its cliches. This novel's only saving grace is Sprig - as character portrayal and dialogue.
