I didn't expect to like this book. By the time I finished it, I wanted more. There were lots of reminders of the Iron Druid books by Kevin Hearne. The book was easy enough to read the pace kept me turning pages. The "druid" in this story is likable, while trying to distance himself from his heritage in a world where no one will let him. This book has an aged mentor, werewolves, Fae, and gnomes. What could go wrong? Well, how about an inner demon?

After reading the counterpart series, THEM, and being introduced to an older version of Colin, I was intrigued by the character to say the least. In JUNKYARD DRUID, I get to experience the back story to this awesome character and man, does it impress. Gritty, vivid imagery and a great story along with a wealth of Celtic/Irish mythos and such make this a story you really do not want to miss! Cant wait for the next Colin book!

I was provided an ARC from the author. This in no way affected any of my thoughts or opinions regarding this book.

With a dash of Odd Thomas and a pinch of Dresden Files, Junkyard Druid is just my type of urban fantasy series. Throw in a splash of Constantine, and we’re cookin’ with gas! And don’t get me started on the hero, Colin McCool. He’s my kind of Druid - sharp-witted, sweet and a little bit dangerous.
Junkyard Druid is the perfect brew to quench any urban fantasy lover’s thirst!

I haven’t been able to actually get through it. I’ve tried. Twice. It’s just like trying to get through fan lit, an amalgam if other styles and stories, but if warm milk doesn’t get you to sleep, and you’ve tried the phone book...

This book has a great premise but there is so much drama that it misses what it aimed to be. Now having said that this book was an easy read with some interesting characters that have a long way to go before they will be able to function as a well oiled machine. This series has some great potential and I enjoyed reading this book.

Wring was a little rough in the very beginning, but vastly improved after the first quarter of the story.
Liked the main character, after getting to know him. A very interesting universe, with a lot more room to expand.
Carried this around sneaking reads on my Kindle.
I read more when more comes out.

There is a lot of back and forth from past to present. After getting used used to that. The story and characters pulled me in. McCool (Collin) is scrappy survivor and has lost everything. He's trying to leave the supernatural world...but it won't leave him in piece. It wants him in pieces!

Ok, I usually do not write reviews, but when an author has a preface stating how he went from writing young adult to writing an adult story it was just too much. Still very Young Adult! I have enough trouble trying to find new series that are written in an adult manner and I waste money in doing so. I was hoping for something like the Iron Druid series but was disappointed!

I read many books that blend fantasy into an urban setting, Richard Kadrey got me started years ago on that concept. However, this means I tend to compare every author with Kadrey and every storyline to Sandman Slim. This is the first time I have found a refreshing storyline and writing style that sets it apart from such comparisons. Great read.

Came across this book in my weekly suggested reading list from the store Kindle. Bought the first book, devoured it in 2 days, quickly bought the remaining books in the series and read them all in just over a week! Looking forward to more :)

Highly entertaining. Slightly more vulgar/coarse character than the Kevin Hearne series - the comparison between the two is the reason I bought this to read. It has some neat ideas in it and I'm interested to see where it might lead in the future. But personally I'll probably stick to Hearne's druid.

A quick and fun read, shorter than the books I usually read. Nothing really new, but well told. Colin is a somewhat different druid from the guys with with mistletoe, sickles, and robes. He is a more modern version with more modern powers. The story is set in the Austin area, so, as a native Texan, I approve. Basically, the story is of a young hero who finds out he has a Destiny and is influenced by powers more in the loop than he is.

Characters fleshed out nicely for the first in a series. Also set the stage for future tales in a logical fashion. The junkyard druid has that humanity flaw which makes the focal point easier to accept.

A great start to a new series. The characters are enticing and I bought the next book as soon as I finished this one. I'm looking forward to how the main character matures and what new plots are brought into play.

Truly bad. Ridiculous stereotypes (the bad girl rides a motorcycle and shames the good girl for not "putting out"!), and a whiny lead character who seems modeled on Japanese harem anime tropes (constantly having to fend off hot girls who won't take no for an answer). Ugh. Just not good.

I see potential, but the author needs to work at developing both his own voice and the junkyard druid universe. The borrowing from the Odd Thomas, Dreskin, and Iron Druid series were off putting. The journal entries were unique but I found them distracting though they did help to flesh out the characters. I'll return to this series after a couple more books are published and give Massey another try.

This guy should stick with YA literature. The writing was sophomoric, and while imitation is the highest form of flattery, when you're up against something like The Iron Druid Chronicles, you better bring your A-game, and this book was the D-team. The author wanted to be gritty; poor language, slang and violence does not equal gritty. Just a total disappointment. I wanted to love it, and I am left utterly dissatisfied.

I wanted to like this book. I really did.

The writing is very glib, and the characters banter entirely too much. The pacing felt off. The therapeutic aspect of the story (which I was looking forward to) never truly developed, and Colin's diary is used more for exposition than any sort of actual introspection.

The treatment of Sabine and Belladonna was not great. "Fae girl puts on glamour to avoid attention, has self harm scars, poor dear... did I mention how big her tiddies are, though?" Ugh. The way the two girls are set up as rivals is tiresome. Belladonna honestly seemed far more competent than Colin, and it annoyed me to see her get pushed to the sidelines at the climax.

The rape jokes felt rather... off. Immature, almost. If it was meant to tell me more about Colin's character, it did not endear me to him.

I think if the story focused more on the characters and relationships and building the magical world, there could be more there. I wanted to hear more about the junkyard! And the therapy! And the road trip!

Scrolling through the books on offer through Kindle Unlimited, I came across this title. I love urban fantasy and its not often that a series involving Celtic Mythology and a modern druid come my way so I gave this one a go. It definitely has some new adult tones, but I was not disappointed in my first outing with the series.

Colin McCool and his girlfriend were trained hunters by his legendary druid uncle. The future looked bright until the unthinkable happens. A witch set on revenge against Colin's uncle curses Colin and he ends up destroying his happiness when he kills his own girlfriend when the cursed beast nature took over. Now, he wants nothing to do with that past life he planned for himself, his uncle, or anything of a fighting nature that will stir the beast inside him. Unfortunately, he can't be left alone to attend his therapy sessions and college classes in peace. He is coerced into aiding Maeve, one of the faery queens, locate a magical artifact and he ends up helping his magical law enforcement friend investigate a werewolf murder. His life couldn't get more interesting, right? Wrong.

The book started out with a prologue of two young, cocky teens in love and then jumps forward in time. Each chapter is headed by a page from Colin's therapy journal so his thoughts on the past and that situation are revealed as the book progresses. After each journal entry, the present day situation carries on.

Colin was a fun hero to follow around and thankfully, the story didn't dwell on the morose thoughts of his earlier journal entries. He's got typical guy thoughts, but also some atypical stuff due to his past experiences and his training. There were lots of things going on to fill his day and lots of people surrounding him whether it was avoiding his addicted, but grieving uncle, a red cap fae mafia group, a new acquaintance Samoan MMA fighter/Maori Warrior, sweet and troubled Sabene his best friend, Luther the head of the vampire group, butt-kicking Belladonna a policing enforcer who unabashedly wants in his drawers, a werewolf biker club, and a cunning fae Queen. I truly hope that these are all going to be recurring characters.

I enjoyed all the story threads introduced and sticking around to see how they all ended up tying together. The fight and action scenes were great and I was glad to get to finally meet Colin's beast side. The series plot line was introduced and I like where it is going for future stories.

All in all, I had a good time and enjoyed discovering this new to me urban fantasy series that takes action and suspense to pair it well with Celtic mythology in a modern city setting.

Massey was afraid that Kevin Hearn beat him to the urban druid party, like showing up late to the costume ball wearing the same getup. Actually Kevin's books became a bit of a self absorbed preach fest with only two wheels on the pavement. I stopped reading Hearn and so long as Massey intends to concentrate on entertainment like Jim Butcher then I am in for the whole ride.
4 stars maybe a little generous but I am hopeful that readers of the genre will take a chance and give a talented author a shot. This was a free book and just like crack cocaine the first time is free. Now I'm hooked and will be starting the 2nd book in the series after writing this review.
The story has depth, magic, humor, werewolves, manipulative Fae, and most of all phenomenal potential for future installments.
I read the first book because the price was right. I will continue reading because the story and characters are right.

When I saw this in the kindle store I decided to take a risk. There are a lot of independently published books available and not all of them are winners. Most have good ideas, but fall short on the dismount; while other are well written and thought out, but are little more than clones of other, better, more well known stories.
Junkyard Druid's preface/authors note acknowledges this, mentioning a similar series that came before it called The Iron Druid Chronicles.
As I've not read the aforementioned other series, I will not compare. However, if it's anything like Junkyard Druid, I'm looking it up soon.
Massey does a wonderful job communicating and melding heart and tragedy with wit and humor. The characters are distinct and varied, the use of magic isn't a be-all-End-all answer to a situation, and the flow of the story is gripping, with plenty of foreshadowing.
This does fail in one or two respects. First, the number of typos is distracting; whomever formatted this did not take the time and proofread after. Second, there are many wonderful characters and not enough of them are used to their fullest potential. It left many of them seeming flat.
All in all a book well worth you time. I'm looking forward to book 2!

Junkyard Druid: A New Adult Urban Fantasy Novel
M.D. Massey

Colin McCool may have been saddled with a hard name to live up to, but it really is the least of his problems. His ancestry is what will probably
destroy him: his is a descendant of the infamous Druid Finn, Finn is still alive, and Finn attracts trouble. Finn's schemes managed to get Colin's true love killed by making Colin overconfident when fighting a brutal adversary.

Family issues suck. Good thing that Colin has a good place to live--a junk yard. He's got a cool coffee shop where everyone knows his name
and no one has managed to kill him yet so there's that also. There's a cute vampire woman who will fight by his side. Oh, and he may finally
have found a new love interest to help him learn to love again.

So Finn had to come back. After all, Finn feels he owes Colin a lot. And there's a new possible love interest in Colin's life! What could go wrong?

The mystical and magical creatures are NOT the fluffy bunny cartoon characters that occupy the pages of so many books. This is a darker version of the classic fairy tale, a bit gruesome, a bit violent (without being overly graphic) and definitely shows a more twisted side of the fae coin.
The book flows smoothly, the human characters come across very realistically and 3 dimensional. The action scenes are exciting without being overloaded with graphic and gory details, despite the violence and bloodshed, a fact that makes it obvious that the author does not need to rely on any shock value tactics to impress and hold the reader.
I thoroughly enjoyed the story, and was completely entertained all the way through.
Colin McCool is descended from a long line of druids, but having druid’s blood doesn’t seem to be the answer to any problem. In fact, it’s more like having a trouble magnet flowing through your veins. He’s cursed by a long ago enemy, and he’s lost the love of his life, and everything else that made his life worth living. The Fae have him trapped, and he’s stuck babysitting his old mentor, who has fallen into a life of drunkenness and addiction. What on earth is a poor druid to do? Read and find out. You will not be sorry.

What a great series! Mr. Massey’s writing is fabulous; his narrative flows soooo smoothly. His characters remain true to their personalities and interactions throughout. They and their relationships are eminently believable. The plots are incredibly well thought out, and even though they are very twisty-turney with possibilities unseen by the naked eye, they develop without confusion as the story goes on. I have just spent a really fun weekend binge reading through Book 6. It has been quite a while since I have enjoyed a series so much. The editing is really good—which I appreciate!—and the wording and tenses are correct. Bad editing and use of the wrong word/tense is confusing and slows me down; there is none of that here. Whee! Thank you, Mr. M. More, please, please, please . . . .

This is a fast paced ride through the wonderful fae world of Colin McCool. They characters are lively and so easy to like. Villains you love to hate and a hero who is witty, innocent and road weary all at once. M.D. Massie brings to life the Irish mythology and breathes new life into the Fae. I was compelled by the story to read each page and not stop. If you like Harry Dresden or Merry Gentry, you will love Colin McCool.

I liked the story but there where definitely some problems. The biggest problem is this books needs to be edited. There is no excuse for a main reoccurring charters name to change in the middle of the book. Is main characters therapist' s name Dr. Larsen or Dr. Jansen and there was more than a few errors that changed the meaning of sentences or made them nonsensical.

I also found the use of unfamiliar or obscure supernatural myths and characters tedious. I am sure as author with an interest in all things supernatural it must be interesting to include these concepts in your storyline. But for me as a reader is often confusing and sometimes just annoying to stop my reading to look up what you were referring to. I read for entertainment not research.

I absolutely adored this book, i was unaware about this author before i read this book and i voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book and i am so unbelievably glad that i did. I will definately be following this authors work from now on.
The storyline of this book was extremely unexpected and definately a surprise, it was not what i thought it was going to be, the surprise was definately a good one! The storyline is such an addictive and compelling read, you will definately find yourself keeping on turning pages just to find out what happens next! There is so much that goes on in this book but it doesnt feel like its rushed or that there is too much going on, it makes sense the way it is written. The one thing i have to mention that i loved about the book is how the story of the past is written through a journal, it written this way tells the story of the past and why the characters are the way they are and it doesnt feel confusing at all. I cant explain how much i loved this story, there are twists and turns throughout as well as pain, healing and love. You feel all the emotions of the characters and to me that shows an amazing writer to make you feel the emotions alongside them.
Colin is a brilliant character, he is extremely complex and that is due to everything he has been through and the world around that he trained for. A lot of him is filled with pain, guilt and regret but he is trying to heal himself. He is a very realistic and human character in his hopes and fears and i think that makes me a reader like him even more. There are quite a lot of characters in this book and i loved every one, they each had completely unique charachters, i dont want to mention any more as i dont want to spoil this story for anyone.
This is an amazing world class book that is a definate must read for everyone! I honestly cant rate this high enough!! I absolutely loved and adored this!!!

I picked this up via Kindle Unlimited and it took me awhile to get around to it and longer to get into it. I was undecided on how I felt about it, but then the narrator mentioned Chuck Norris and how powerful and comforting he is and that made me love it. You could tell the protagonist was just thinking of all the times on Walker: Texas Ranger where Walker would stare down a wolf or a bear or something and use his Cherokee powers to psychically dominate the animal and force it to submit to Walker's commands. I'm looking forward to the next one and I hope the author explores this side of the character more

It's a decent story with the typical urban wizard tropes. There was a nice attempt at representation throughout the book but it got undercut with the "nice guy" trope the protagonist falls into very often. The generic 'all the girls love me and I also think they're hot (but will always love my dead girlfriend and always be respectful)' thing. Stuff like that. Otherwise it's a pretty interesting and funny novel of you like urban fantasy.

This could have been a truly fun, transporting urban fantasy novel, but though the storyline was engaging... the characters were not. The author didn't develop them enough to make me care, particularly about Jesse and his relationship with her. It was an odd overlap to the storyline that was more distraction than something I looked forward to as each new chapter started.

I did like the book. It is set in Austin, Texas and as a local, I could picture the scenes with no trouble. It is really wonderful to think that down at SoCo there would be a vampire barista, or a faery queen up on Riverside (I used to work just down the street from that one), and a wizard in a barn at McKinney Roughs. I liked it well enough to buy the next in the series.

okay. Okay. OKAY. I FRICKEN LOVED THIS BOOK.
I love Colin and his pragmatic outlook on life and all things spooky. I love Bella and her badass self (I really hope something happens there...) I love Jesse and also hate her situation. I want to know more and see more about the whole Junkyard Druid thing. Obviously something had to happen for him to be called that. It's a great moniker ?

This is a terrible review, I know. But I needed to tell someone about how much I enjoyed this without going into weird tangents soooo, here. Oops.

Y'all should totally pick up this book if you enjoy the Iron Druid series, the Mercy Thompson series, and books of that ilk. Highly recommend. Two thumbs WAY WAY up!

It was ok. I hope that the next novels are more deep. I just didn't feel the excitement like I do with other author's characters. Who doesn't try to get the license plate number of the car that keeps popping up when bad things are going down. Or not flesh out enough especially how Colin got wrapped around the Queen' s finger so easy. I'm just saying Druids, Warlocks, Mages, and Wizards aren't supposed to be played around with in paranormal novels but the author made it to easy get to Colin. I will chalk it up to Colin's youth☺

Fast-paced, good character development, a 2-for-one with backstory and present day tale trading off...suspense and teasers in both. I especially liked that I didn't have to guess which one I was in by the use of time stamps and italics vs regular font. I'm hooked on this writer. Oh, and the humor is a bonus. In the same vein (no pun intended) as Kim Harrison, Jim Butler, and Kevin Hearne. If you like their writing, you'll love MD Massey.

This was a fine start to a new Urban fantasy series. The story is very reminiscent of other popular Urban fantasies, in particular Jim Butcher's Dresden series, Kevin Hearne's Iron Druid series and Patricia Briggs Mercy Thompson series, but he puts his own spin on things, the characters are interesting, and the action scenes quite exciting. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

Ok it would have been 4.5 stars but I rounded up since it the first in a new series. Just a plain enjoyable book. Could have been deeper maybe but then it might have gotten boring. I just know I liked it. Not my number one favorite for the past year but I would say in the top 10-20 books I've read in the last 12 months. I will definitely read the next one. I really like the humor thrown in and the fights did not get so bogged down that I would want to skip to the end result like I tend to do in some books. It has a little of everything, good character development, good flow to the story but enough detail so the picture is vivid enough. Even the fairer gender will like it I think because of the "love story' aspect and the balance of male/female "heros". Good job Mr Massey....now hurry up and write the next one, I'm impatiently waiting.

This book is pretty good. It is well edited, if a little short and draws a lot on Irish mythology which makes since, as the main character is a Druid. For readers of urban fantasy some of the story will seem familiar but there is enough of the new to keep things interesting. The book is fast paced and keeps you involved throughout. Definitely looking forward to book 2.,

There’s a plethora of characters with just a smidge of development. Maeve the fae Queen, Finn the longlived Druid working a recovery program, Belladonna, a type of Supernatural policeman, Sabine, a timid half breed, Jesse a hunter ghost and Colin a Druid with a problem. I’m interested to see how this unfolds.

When I first saw this book, I thought, yet another paranormal urban fantasy. I decided to try it and enjoyed it immensely. Many of the urban fantasies are romances, and they focus so much on the romance that there is very little story or character development left. This book had a good story and developed the characters too. There is still much development to do and I look forward to the next installment.

Colin McCool - just the right amount of snark and sass combined with boyish charm and druid mysterious. You want to pinch his cheeks and take him home and feed him -- IF he shows you what's in his hella cool Craneskin bag and teaches you some magick.
If you love Celtic mythology, bad ass hunters, biker lycanthropes, and Maori warriors, plus lots of other fascinating characters, this author's the one.
It was a true pleasure to read a novel in this format and not be frustrated by punctuation, spelling and grammatical errors. Honestly, it was a relief not to have to try and decipher what the author meant to say.
Great scenes. Wonderful character building. Great plot.
Can't wait for more!

This book starts off slow and has a LOT of references to myths, legends, and monsters from Celtic mythology. If you don't know a lot about Celtic mythology you may need Google on hand to look up the monsters or myths as they aren't explained very well.
So long story short just take it and roll with it whenever Collin starts talking about monsters.

Excellent story, Unfortunately after I had read it, I realized why I felt as if the story started out too abruptly with Colin living in a junkyard as his mentor struggles with drug addiction. I don't often write reviews but this writer is so talented that I had to put in my two cents.

The Author does an excellent job of creating a world with Magic and Rules.
This is not a coming of Age Story, the character is around 20 years old and a little world weary.

I think if you read 5 pages you'll be hooked

A very good start to a series with a well-formulated fantasy world.

As the author admits in his notes, he was dismayed by the fact that his book hit many of the same notes as Kevin Hearns Iron Druid series.

However, having read and admired both, I can say the similarities are only those based on the same folklore and that M.D. Massey has created a unique and interesting world that I am looking forward to following.

I really liked this book! Urban Fantasy is a tough one. Typically, what I've read in this genre was either poorly written or a cheap imitation of Harry Dresden. This book was neither.

I was pleasantly surprised that the book had original characters and ideas in a genre full of clones and copycats. The story caught me, grabbed me, and held me in for its entirety. Can't wait for the next installment!

Lots of similarities to the iron Druid although I don't think it's a rip off. I like urban fantasy genre and this is worth reading especially if you've got the prime free books subscription. It is unusual to find a writers with a realistic knowledge of martial arts and the use of edged and ballistic weapons. I am currently reading his Them series and find it fascinating that a writer can take the most impossible setting and make it and the characters so real. This is not a Walking Dead type of writer, Massey understands real world because his knowledge of people and action are beyond what you can gain by reading comic books and playing video games.

The story was ok, but really not my thing. It was slow in a few places, so I skipped over a few things. It didn't keep my attention as much as I would have liked for it to. Oh well. Good story, but could use a bit more action and intrigue in my opinion.

So I really enjoyed this book, it was a good start to what I hope will be an amazing series, I was a little put off at first by the way the story jumps from Journel to present day, but that went away after 6 chapters. It is wonderfully done and really has 2 stories in one for the first book. Its a great intro book for a series because it explains everything well, while still leaving enough for you to guess at what's coming next

For those who don't know, the quotation above is the unofficial motto of Austin, Texas. So the setting of Junkyard Druid is amusingly appropriate. I am a big fan of urban fantasy, have lived in Austin several years and am also somewhat knowledgeable about Celtic mythology, so this is right up my alley. Next time, include an appendix of the creatures, with proper pronunciation. That way the un-and-under-initiated don't either scramble for their references or give up on keeping track of the players. Good first entry. Looking forward to another.

There's definitely a few thing to work on. There's a lot of telling and not enough showing. The mythos was a little cluttered and completely held to history, but the action seqences were riveting, and Colin is a strangely charming character that I found easy to relate to. I hope the writing improves in the second book, however, as I wouldn't exactly call it top notch.

It's not Kevin Hearn, but maybe that is a good thing? The world is pretty well realized and the characters are developing nicely. I love the prose, and am a sucker for witty dialog, so keep um coming.

Treating classmates with zero respect, drinking underage, and hacking classmate's computers for notes. Yea, this guy is a true modern American. He's as bad as the grand theft auto endorsing schmuck from Richard Kadrey's Sandman Slim series. Welcome to the decline of the Western Civilization, where anti-heroes engage in petty crimes.

I liked the book. The beginning was a little slow and a little confusing. It was kinda annoying it repeated itself in the beginning but as I understood why once it picked up and i really started getting into it. I am looking forward to reading the next one.

I'd never read anything by Massey before so this was something new for me, and it was cute. There premise was easy enough to follow even though the names of creatures and witches were too bizarre to easily keep up. I think this story is written for someone younger than myself because I only caught a few of the cultural references. I will read on and find out what happens to Colin, I only hope there aren't that many more weird names being introduced or I'm going to need a cheat sheet!

Hands down the best new series I have read! M.D. Massey shot his way to the top of my "must read" authors, and will soon be on yours. The Junkyard Druid series has every element of the best supernatural fiction books - Unique story line, suspense, action, a little love, humor, and relatable characters that make you wish you knew them in real life (with a "Cool") name. A must read!

If you are a fan of Jim Butcher or Kevin O'hearn's work you will love this. MD Massey's contribution to the urban fantasy genre is wonderful. The hero is flawed, the women are hot and the fae are as devious as ever. My biggest complaint was it was too short, I wanted more. I enjoyed the way he told the back story for the main protagonists, I thought it was unique and allowed me to jump into the story "already in progress" I look forward to seeing where this series goes.

I received an advanced reader copy in exchange for an unbiased review.

Fun and fast-paced, good characters and plot, kept my interest throughout. If you dig Dresden, Rachel Morgan, Verity Price and Atticus...you’ll dig this. Solid 4 stars. (Sorry, but 5 stars are reserved for The Wheel of Time and Ursula K. LeGuin...)

I did not have high expectations of this book going in, but it drew me in quickly. The sign of a good book in my opinion is that it makes you want more and I was so sad to see that it was the only book in the series. Can't wait for the next one.

I really liked this book. I'm a fan of the Iron Druid series and this book is proof that there is plenty of room for another Druid! I can hardly wait to find out what happens next, please hurry Mr Massey!

I really enjoyed reading this story. It did need some editing. There were some extra words and the occasional weird sentence. Overall however, it was a satisfying story. I'll be glad to read more by Mr. Massey.

I applied for an advanced reading copy by the author. I liked the other books that i have read of this author. the druid novels are a little different to the other books, but also good to read. I like the new guy in the story. but i assume this book is more written for the young adult then me.
I still enjoyed it and will read it to the end.

Bonus for being set in Austin. It's a good start for an urban fantasy series. Interesting cast of characters around town. I like that the hero rides a scooter, good way to not get so full of himself. All in all a good adventure that sets up the world and lays out rules, boundaries, and cast. I had mixed feelings about the long chapter intro/historical back story thing.
