I normally don't like novellas because I usually feel cheated by its very shortness. Not with this book! I was intrigued by the description, and was hooked the moment the elevator doors closed. This was a sweet heartwarming small bit of mildly erotic romance and when it ended, I did not feel let down. I will watch for more of this authors books to go on sale (I don't spend more than $1 on short kindle novellas) as they are a little pricey right now.

This is my all time favorite book and I have read hundreds in the last few years. I rarely read a book twice but I honestly have to read this one at least once a month. I recommend this to anyone who loves tattoos and piercings. This is just a fantasy come true.

Great short story of love at first sight. To meet in darkness and bring it all in the light is a brilliant way of saying never judge a person by the way they look. Looks can be deceiving. Laura Kaye never seems to disappoint me!

This has become one of my favorite books. Caden is just a very likable character and I find myself going back to this book, often when I want a reminder of the strong but sweet man that does it for me. There are some great lines in this book. Oh yeah, and the book is Hot!

*Spoiler Alert*. "Can I have you".

The purchase from the store went fine, as usual. No problems there. But I really have to say, even with my recent Kindle reading kick, this book didn't hold my interest enough to want to finish reading it. To date, I still haven't finished, in fact, and it's short.

Laura Kaye has managed to pack a powerful/hot passionate story into 110 pages. Two people with their own 'demons' to deal with, manage to come together by way of being stuck in an elevator together - then the sparks fly!! Even when they are eventually released it doesn't end there but just gets hotter! Laura Kaye is an amazing author and I look forward to reading her other books.

A Hott & Heartwarming love story I felt drawn or pulled into the book from the begining. I do wish the book was so much more longer. The book was a Great short a read. But in the end I wish I was stuck in the elevator with caden.

For a short story this book was a great read..... really enjoyed it!! Different compared to other books since the characters at the start don't even know what they look like. Definitely worth the read!!

This book is like an appetizer to a meal. it gives you a bit of taste of what is to come yet not enough to make it a meal. Hearts of Darkness is the prequel to the main event book. This gives you the "how it all began" story. I give it a 3 1/2 stars because it is well written and gives details so the reader understands the darkness isn't just the lights being out in the elevator. It's about PTSD and horrific life that Caden survived through but has yet to confront.

I loved that 2 people get to know each other without seeing each other to make assumptions. Let's you really get to see someone from the inside. I loved this book. I could not put it down. I went back to buy more books from this author.

A great story about how a horrible day can change into something wonderful. Loved the banter between the two leads and how everything progressed naturally. The author allows the heat to simmer just under the surface before it smolders over into something titillating.

I don't read a lot of contemporary romances but I am really really glad that I gave Hearts of Darkness a try.

The hook for this novella length story is great - two strangers stuck in an elevator in the dark get to really know each other without the baggage of appearance. This lack of preconceptions is a big deal since the leading man has been using his appearance to keep people at a distance, but despite his scary looks, he's a sweetie and wounded hero as well and his great leading lady has just the right amount of compassion, humor and spunkiness to make it through the walls he's built around his heart.

The time frame of the story in Hearts of Darkness is short but the connection that Kaye establishes between them is well done and I thought that the story still worked - I thought that it felt like these two could fall in love in the unusual situation even in that short amount of time. So, I loved this story and am definitely going to try the other book of Kaye's that I've had my eye on.

This book is a great little escape, the characters really draw you into a page turning frenzy. The plot is a perfect balance between blissful fantasy and the ponderance of reality. It would be great to see what happens next! I definitely look at the possiblity of getting stuck in an elevator differently now. Can't wait to read Ms. Kayes next read, North of Need!

Ok story line , but book was way to short. Definitely could have developed the story into a longer book and continued the story of the relationship. Book was only approx. 100 pages long and I was done reading in a day. Would not recommend spending your money on this book.

This is a very delicious story, I only wish that it were longer, it definitely left me curious for more about what happens with them later on. Hopefully a 2nd book will come out to finish off the hole left in my head about whats next.

And that cover is just yummy, that's my favorite part to look at of a man, the back of their broad chiseled shoulders!

A short lovely hot read about two people thrown together in a malfunctioning elevator. He has visible scars from a terrible car accident. She has invisible scars from the loss of her mother early in life. In the dark, claustrophia inducing space, they share friendship, comfort, laughs and passion that even the bright lights of rescuers can't dispel. I double dog dare you to try to put this story down!

The story is very implausable and a little silly. I understand that the purpose of these novels are for escape, but this premsie is just too much to swallow. Falling for and BEING INTIMATE with someone you just met in an elevator that has no lights is pushing it. Read something else.

I didn't like this story. The characters just seemed like two horny teenager and that ridiculous banter between them was annoying. I know that it was a short story but to be believable the author really needed to spend the time developing a better (stronger) connection between the 2 characters.

I am torn about this review. I really don't want to give it a low rating, but the book was just under-developed. I think that the author has pretty good writing skills, but I was disappointed when the book abruptly ended. I found that that plot was rushed and I thought that if the author spent more time and effort developing the back stories to the characters the book would have been more enjoyable. I really didn't want to stop reading it. I didn't realize that I had pretty much finished the book in two hours. I woke up this morning to continue reading and I only had two pages left. Major let down.

I don’t know about anyone else, but the idea of being stuck in an elevator freaks me out. I’m not technically claustrophobic, but being stuck in the dark with no moving air would be enough to panic me, especially if I were trapped alone. Caden Grayson has similar issues with dark, confined spaces but, luckily for him, he’s not by himself. Makenna James learned the hard way to not ask “what else could go wrong” when she’s having a rough day. Thankfully, they have each other to talk to and they open up in ways that total strangers never would if their elevator were well-lit and making an easy descent to the first floor.

I really enjoyed this fast read. While it was a little unrealistic for me upon further reflection, I got caught up in the well-crafted story and the chemistry that ignited between Makenna and Caden. I would definitely be interested in seeing if they can make a go of a relationship that started in so dramatic a fashion but I’m rooting for them. The sex scenes (even the ones not including penetrative sex) are well-crafted, but move the book into “for mature readers only” territory.

I'm a huge fan of Laura Kaye's writing and I've heard amazing things about Hearts in Darkness so I'd actually bought a copy of this book a couple of years ago but for some reason I'd never got around to reading it. I'm not even sure why I put it off for so long because I was expecting to enjoy it but I think I kind of liked knowing I had a fab book tucked away ready for a rainy day when I might need it. Then I found out that Laura is releasing a sequel in the new year so I decided it was about time to dive in and now I'm kicking myself for not getting to it sooner because I absolutely loved this story. Considering the majority of the book is about two strangers trapped in a pitch black elevator together waiting for the power to come back on I'm kind of surprised by how fabulous it was!

Makenna was digging for her phone while rushing to catch the elevator so she wasn't paying attention to the person who held the door open for her and all she saw of Caden before the lights went out was a tattooed hand. Caden just saw a mountain of shopping bags and a flash of gorgeous red hair before everything went dark and his claustrophobia sent him into a panic. It's only the sound of Makenna's voice that helps him push back his fear so he urges her to keep talking and help take his mind of things. The longer they are trapped together in the dark the more they realise how much they're enjoying each other's company but will the magic persist after the lights come back on and they get to see each other for the first time?

Hearts in Darkness sucked me in from the first page, I fell in love with both of the characters and I really enjoyed spending time watching them get to know each other. Caden is the kind of guy who looks tough, and possibly a little scary, at first glance with his shaved head, tattoos and multiple piercings but he's actually incredibly sweet and has a heart of gold. He's the kind of guy I'd be happy to get stuck in an elevator with that's for sure! Makenna looks a lot more conservative but is actually really friendly, outgoing and a little bit of a tomboy. They aren't the first couple you'd put together based on looks but in terms of personality and their outlook on life they fit really well.

I love that while they're so different on the surface they actually have a lot in common and you could really feel the emotional connection between them. I guess I just liked the whole idea of getting to know someone without looks playing a part in the equation and I thought Laura Kaye did a fantastic job of building up the heat between them even when they both had no idea what the other one looked like. I'm really excited that these characters are going to get a sequel too, I loved the romance and we did see a little of them after they got out of the elevator but I definitely want more and I'm looking forward to seeing them as a couple in a normal situation. Love in the Light is right at the top of my January wish list and I know for sure I'll be rereading Hearts in Darkness while I wait for it to release.

When I pick up a story, I tend to get sucked in more by deeply nuanced characters than by clever plot devices. I was interested in the story the minute I found out that it dealt with two characters forced together in a broken down elevator. Character development and dialog would have to be stellar in order to make a plot device such as that work. This story delivers on both points. I was so excited to see the connection develop between the two main characters, Mekenna and Caden. They seem polar opposites at first: a business woman in a pinstriped business suit and a quiet, tattooed man. However, from the moment we hear Mekenna's strong inner voice, we know that there is something more to these characters than meets the eye.

The whole story is like a freight train, moving forward with so much momentum that it is literally impossible to put it down. I made the mistake of starting this novella just before dinner time; needless to say my family had take out that night. By the end of the story, I felt as though I knew these characters. I was rooting for their relationship while my heart pounded because of the sultry heat of the sexual tension. This is a definite must-read story. I'm anxious to read more titles by Kaye in the future!

Sometimes rereads make me nervous, but Hearts in Darkness reminded me why I started reading erotica in the first place. (Just like the next erotica I read reminded me why I quit reading erotica.) It has an original concept—which has now been copied by many other books—and checked off all three boxes for a good book.

Characters, character interactions (AKA chemistry), and world.

Right off the bat there's some wondering about what they'd look like naked/he has a sexy voice moments. Thankfully the two start to get to know each other immediately. Trapped in that elevator they end up knowing more about each other and learning who the other is than months of dating usually can't. It seems far fetched but sometimes anonymity and the lure of someone you don't know, and may never see again, can give you the courage to open up. Not to mention that the setting of being trapped in an elevator is Caden’s worst nightmare and it's probably the setting itself combined with his past that hits the spot.

How the characters of this book interact with one another is perfection. This is important to me. I found Caden and Makenna to be very realistic. I bought their pasts, who they are now, and how they were interacting with each other. The chemistry the two had was phenomenal. Not to mention that things don't go smoothly. They have doubts, worries about how she thought she wasn't a judgey person shouldn’t affect what she thinks of him once she finds out what he looks like. Worries about what will happen to them outside of the elevator, and I bought it all.

The world. It's our world so there's not much to explain. However, I new where the characters fit in to it. The elevator, building the elevator was in. Everything. I'm strange in that I need to know this type of stuff. World building is a big thing. And it's so well done I could picture every aspect and scene. Which only magnified the story for me.

Hearts in Darkness was one of the first erotica I had read. I thought by reading it maybe it wouldn't be as good as I had remembered. But it was. Probably even better, because it reminded me about how amazing the genre can be. Because I've been burned out on erotica and haven't bothered to even look around for new reads. Hearts in Darkness is a rare find and is one that passes the rereadable test.

Sexual Content: Some sexual humor and sex.

4/5- Great! Really enjoyed it.

Bookish friends are the absolute best, am I right? I was texting with the wonderful Krista at Krista’s Dust Jacket, lamenting about the fact that I was suffering from a massive book hangover. Which lead to talking about what she was reading (Hearts in Light). She was raving about this book and I admitted I had never read HEARTS IN DARKNESS – which is a seriously stupid oversight on my part because I know and adore the author, Laura Kaye. Two seconds later an email flashes that Krista gifted me the book.

Of course I started it and devoured it immediately. This book was totally what I needed, so thanks, Krista (and Laura)!

HEARTS IN DARKNESS is a small-ish book, a smidge longer than your usual novella, but that just makes the fact that in 112 and pages Kaye makes me fall in love with and adore Caden and Makenna all the better. This book takes off with a bang and doesn’t quit.

The entire novel spans one night. Now, I can already hear the internal “insta-love” grousing, but hold on a second. I think it’s crucial to remember that Makenna and Caden spend hours trapped together in total darkness with nothing to do but talk to each other. So tally up all that and what does that time equal? Three or four dinner dates? Twelve phone calls? A thousand texts? There’s a beautiful intimacy in that the way their relationship begins and unfolds is because they have nothing to do but be with one another and learn about one another.

HEARTS IN DARKNESS is a freaking fantastic little powerhouse of a book. It’s a superfast read that you won’t want to quit. Thankfully, Krista just introduced me to this book (as I am now telling you about it) and you only have to wait a few days before the sequel, Hearts in Light, comes out.

In the meantime, HEARTS IN DARKNESS is available for your reading pleasure for less than $1.

The truth is I tend to be more lenient in my reviews of novellas. There’s just no way you can pack enough character development and storyline complexity into a book that is under 150 pages. I dive in knowing that it won’t measure up to a full-length novel, so it’s unfair of me to judge it by the same standards. That said, Hearts in Darkness is a well-done, sexy little story.

The set-up is intriguing. Two strangers are trapped in an elevator, and before either gets a good look at the other, they are plunged into complete darkness. Professional and polished Makenna would probably never give Caden a chance if she saw him. Even though his heart is soft, his tattoos and piercings make him look intimidating. Their predicament provides an opportunity for them to get to know each other’s fears, favorites and past without any preconceptions. I loved how they come to fall for each other as people before they can be influenced by looks.

I realize their relationship is accelerated due to the unusual circumstances (and the book’s length), but I always find it disingenuous when couples fall in love and want to spend their entire lives together after knowing each other less than 24 hours. However, I can’t deny that Caden and Makenna are delightful characters with wonderful chemistry, and the story isn’t quite as predictable as I’d anticipated.

All in all, this was an enjoyable, quick read. I’m looking forward to reading more about Makenna and Caden in Love in the Light.

I was looking for another stranded on a desert island book because I was really in the mood for that kind of story so I searched the Goodread’s data base and came up with this category; Trapped/Stranded/Wilderness Romance Books. Hearts in Darkness rated number two and I knew I just had to read it. Okay so it is not a desert island instead it is set in a lift.

Makenna is having the day from hell. All she wants to do is go home open a bottle of wine and sit in front of the television. As she is leaving work she drops her phone and doesn’t realise the battery has fallen out as she steps into the lift. She is too wrapped up in herself to notice anything about the good Samaritan who holds the door for her.

Caden has just left a meeting in the building that Makenna works in. He doesn’t know her but notices her beautiful red hair. The lift has just set off down to the ground floor when the lights go out and the lift gets stuck! Caden doesn’t like enclosed spaces and needs to find a distraction.
These two strangers are in the wrong place at the right time. They need each other they just don’t know it yet. Fate throws them the ball they need in this sweet but hot romance novel.

I have to admit tragic pasts aren’t really my thing but in this book it worked. The lift adventure brings them together when they shut everyone else out. 4.5 stars out of 5.

This book was 99p on the store and totally worth it and better still now is the time to read it as the sequel is due out January 12th.

If you haven't read this novella you need to pick it up. Like now. It's sexy and fun and will make you wish you lived in a place that has tall buildings with elevators. Whew!

I freaking loved the characters, Caden and McKenna, and the whole set up. Trapped with a stranger...in a small space...in the dark, with no idea what they look like, and nothing to do but talk...for hours. It's crazy intimate and not just for them but was for me too. You really get to know these two quick and they're truly amazing people.

Caden's this big macho alpha male that's tattooed and pierced. Sexy as all get out but plagued with insecurities and phobias he's carried for years. And Makenna, well, she's a frazzled accountant that's had one monster of a day. She's sweet and pretty easy going. She's someone you'd feel instantly comfortable with and that would do anything she could to ease someone else's troubles.

The banter between them. It's amazing. They feel natural and comfortable and so good together. I loved getting to hear them just talk. The silly things they shared, the heart breaking moments they'd been through. You can't help but smile over their teasing and wish just a little bit you really knew them.

Things move very fast but with the intimate and super charged situation it totally worked for me. And these steamy scenes. Dayum! They're scorching hot, passionate and even have a little light hearted playfulness going on. It's the best combo and so satisfying.

At this point I never doubt a Laura Kaye book. I know going in it's going to be well written, sexy, heart warming and going to have an incredible happily ever after because really the woman is just brilliant and talented as hell but this one was even better than I expected. I'm seriously kicking myself for waiting so blasted long to read it. It was worth every cent and will definitely be a re-read.

4.5 Stars

Hearts of Darkness is a very quick, very sweet and a very hot read by Laura Kaye. I read this 2011, and I reread it to prepare for the second installment out this month.

I remember reading this and falling hard for Mckenna and Jace. It’s an unlikely pairing, but they are sweet and sexy nonetheless. Their beginning was quite extraordinary. It was love and lust at first meet in the dark…literally. They were stuck in an elevator and well, with nothing else to do, they ended up getting to know each other. I love that it all happened in the dark, and all reservations of appearances were put aside. Jace is super hot complete with tats and piercings, and plain Jane McKenna couldn’t resist his charms. Unfortunately, the book ended way too quick for my liking, but so much more to both characters were left unsaid. Of course, leaving me and the rest of Laura Kaye’s fans needing more.

I have to say though that I rated this book at four stars initially because I was disappointed with the short length of the book and at the time, I knew a sequel was not in the plans. I felt like I had reading blue balls and was left hanging. I needed more of their story. I can safely say; you won’t get ‘reading blue balls” because the next installment is scheduled for release 1/12/15. So, go crazy and read on!!!

The book caught my attention when I read about two people being trapped in an elevator. I wanted to see how the story went as I have never read a book like this before. It was very interesting how two strangers, Makenna James and Caden Grayson was able to talk more freely in the dark, They seemed to become closer because of their situation and find out things they had in common. There were good things they had in common and heart wrenching things they had in common. The wonderful thing too was that they had not seen each others faces before the lights went out in the elevator. I loved how accepting Makenna was of Caden. It broke my heart to hear about some of the things Caden had to go through.

This is a good book, but it is only the first book. You will have to read the second and final book to see how the story ends. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader opt of this book.

Hearts in Darkness by Laura Kaye

After a long and difficult day, Makenna James makes a mad dash to get on the elevator. She was in a rush to get home to wind down on her comfy couch with a glass of wine. Thankfully, due to a good samaritan who held the elevator for her, she does not have to wait for the elevator to come back up.

However, as her luck has proven for the day, it is not on her side.

The two strangers barely catch a glimpse of each other before the elevator comes to a halt mid descent as it becomes pitch black in the small metal box.

Too bad Caden Grayson is claustrophobic.

Minutes turn into hours and the only one to calm him down is the fiery red head.

As the two are waiting to be rescued, they began to learn about each other.

They say love is blind.

BUT

Will their connection be broken when the power is restored and they are outside the box?

Even though this book was short and predictable, I enjoyed the characters, their stories, and their chemistry! I look forward to reading book two, Love in the Light!

5 "My Good Sam" STARS

"Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind; and therefore is winged Cupid painted blind." ~ William Shakespeare

There are so many things I love about this novella. I think first and foremost is the fact that two people, Caden and Mackenna, form a bond - a strong, sizzling connection - without really setting eyes on each other. Like the quote above says, it just speaks to the beauty of the mind and heart to find love without looks to distort the reality.

This is also one hot read. This is seriously a sexual fantasy come true. Imagine being stuck in an elevator for hours in the dark with a big, muscular man who speaks his mind, is gentle with his ways, sweet with his words and smells delicious...*shakes my head and sighs* sorry, back to my review...Their time trapped in the elevator is one utterly mouthwatering (among other things) tease!!

"I love that elevator."

I'm super excited to see what happens with Caden and Mackenna. I've been waiting a long time for this. If you're looking for an original and scorching hot quick read with the potential for so much more, you must read this!!

Novellas are tricky to pull off well, especially when it's a standalone story and not part of a series. You wouldn't know that while reading Hearts in Darkness. It's definitely one of the best standalone novellas I've ever read. I would LOVE more of this story and, rumor has it, that's coming later this year. I can't wait.
Character development is so difficult in such a short story – and so important to my enjoyment of a story. Laura did an amazing job of highlighting the depth and complexity of her characters in just a little over 100 pages. I felt like I knew and understood them better after half the book than I do some characters in full-length novels. Makenna and Caden were both wonderful characters.

I'm not sure exactly how to identify the trope, but I'm a big fan of books that put two characters together for a limited time in a place they can't escape. Trapped in an elevator, locked in a room or even on a road trip. I love watching how relationships develop in such a short period of time under such circumstances. Hearts in Darkness does this brilliantly.

I loved the dynamic between Makenna and Caden. They might have only gotten a mere glimpse of each other before the elevator stopped and the lights went out, but they flourished in the dark. It was like they'd been put in that place at the same time because they each needed someone. They talked about their lives and spilled truths and I was completely enraptured the entire time. I'm pretty sure if you looked up "unputdownable books" in the dictionary, you'd see a picture of this book. Because, seriously, it's one of the most addicting stories I've read in a long time.

Hearts in Darkness was the best of the best when it comes to novellas. I was tripping over my feels while reading it. I loved how well these characters got to know each other in just a short period of time. Hell, I loved how well *I* got to know these characters in a such a short period of time. It had swoony moments and smoking hot sexy time. Love in an elevator, indeed! But, more than that, it had two characters I know I won't be forgetting about any time soon. I can't wait for the continuation of their story. Hearts in Darkness can totally stand on its own, but that doesn't mean I'm any less excited at the prospect of a companion novel.

I purchased this eBook because of the rates. But, honestly, what's in this book that makes it so well rated? It's ok but not that freaking good. I've read books which were written by other authors and they don't have so many stars although they are far better that this one. I admit the story is original, however, it's not a book I'd recommend to anybody since there are so many great books to go through, sorry.

Laura Kaye has managed to write a book that more than 2/3rds of which takes place in total darkness and its a Best Seller. MaKenna and Caden's story starts out late Friday in an elevator. Neither one gets a complete look at the other before the power goes out and they are stuck in pitch darkness in the elevator. How they get to know one another and over come their issues together is amazingly heartwarming. Not to mention its also totally sexy. Words are powerful and in the dark where all you have to get to know someone is your words, your personality and an instant connection your words are more important than anything. Laura Kaye did an amazing job building the trust, compassion, lust and need between her characters. I can't wait to see what happens with MaKenna and Caden once they are together out in total daylight.

Makenna James is rushing to catch the elevator. The weekday is over, it’s Friday; everyone is leaving the building. She almost missed the elevator, but the Good Samaritan who is standing inside, holds the door for her. Just as the elevator starts to go up, everything goes dark, and it stops. The Good Samaritan, Caden Grayson, starts to panic; he is scared of enclosed spaces, of the dark; Makenna starts to laugh hysterically, and thus begins a fantastic story!

The extraordinary Laura Kaye has woven a very unusual romance between unlikely people who might not have met otherwise. The setting gives Ms. Kaye to display her tremendous skills, focusing on the scents, sounds, touches. Makenna and Caden truly connect mostly through talking, and the dialogue is spectacular in its simplicity; they share all sorts of stories, get to know each other. HEARTS IN DARKNESS is erotic, passionate, playful, gripping, sensual, extremely innovative, and absolutely fabulous!

This is the first book, really it is a novella, I have read by Laura Kaye. The premise is interesting and slightly uncomfortable. Two characters - one corporate world female and one very non-corporate world male - are trapped alone but together in a completely dark elevator for hours. The story is told from the alternating points of view of both the guy and the woman -- Makenna and Caden. This switching point of view device is nice as it allows readers to fully see how each character views the other one.

Just like if you were stuck in an elevator with a stranger you could not see - the conversation begins slowly and awkwardly. But gradually, Makenna and Caden get a rhythm of conversation going; they begin to talk about intimate and personal subjects. They are emboldened by the anonymous like setting of not being able to see each other. However, Caden has a secret or a few - he saw Makenna before she got on the elevator. He knows exactly what she looks like and he likes the way she looks, he likes it a lot. His other secret is insecurity - he worries if Makenna can accept what he looks like. Caden is heavily tattooed and wears piercings all over his body. Makenna does not, at least on the surface, appear to be the type of girl that goes for tattoos and piercings. But then, this book is about so much more than appearances. After all, the romance begins in the dark with conversation and whispered intimacies -the bond and attraction that develops between Makenna and Caden is not dependant on how each other appears to the other in a physical way.

What develops over the course of their imprisonment is a strong pysical attraction builds - the attraction is based on what so many of us hope our relationships are built upon - a bonding of personalities and souls. This is an erotica novella so there are hot love scenes, you will not be disappointed. I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys reading erotica with strong character and relationship building themes.

Short but sweet. That about sums up my feelings about this story.
Makenna and Caden "meet cute" in an elevator when the power goes out. They are trapped together for some time before they are rescued. It's how they spend that time in the elevator that is the heart of the story. My favorite thing about this couple is the time they get to know each other before they know what the other looks like (the electricity went out before they could see one another). A bond was formed on the mental and emotional level first. For this couple, it truly is what's on the inside that counts - rather than the outside. [Of course, once they do see each other's physical appearance, each is hotness personified!]
The only part that gives me pause is that they have a physical relationship so soon after meeting each other. Yes, secrets were revealed, and heart to heart talks were exchanged in the elevator, but to take it to the intimate level the same night they meet? Hmmm, I'm not sure that's realistic. Still, this is a lovely little story and I wouldn't mind reading other books by Laura Kaye.

My first read by this author, and I enjoyed this immensely. This is just what I wanted, a light, fluffy read. I can't and won't bash the plot - the "I can't believe she almost had sex with a total stranger in an elevator" part because frankly, people do weird things all the time or else we wouldn't know what a one night stand is. This was more than that. Caden knows his looks draws all kinds of attention and stares and assumptions. After all, who wouldn't be a little afraid of a tall, broad male with an almost bald head, tattoos and piercings adorning his extremities? He must be a criminal, right? Wrong. He's just a man with a tortured past, and he carries the death of his family and his younger brother on his shoulders. His body art are a shrine to the dead, armor for his heart and the pain he went through to get them a sort of penance.

Then he's trapped in an elevator with Makenna, who he barely caught a glimpse of before the lights went out. The darkness sends him into a near panic attack, but he's soothed by Makenna's presence and her voice. The darkness which once fed his fears has turned into something welcome - it allows them to speak freely, without prejudice of first impressions and looks. They spend the next few hours just talking about mundane things, then about more personal things. They open up and find they have a lot in common. Sparks fly and lust ignites between them. Before things can go too far, the lights come back on and they finally get to see one another, face to face. Will the attraction they felt to who they really are on the inside carry over when the physical attributes are cast into the light?

I loved this couple. Their chemistry was made even sweeter by their interaction in the dark. There was an absence of cooing over the looks of the other as they grew closer, and that was a nice change from my usual reading. I also like the fact that Ms Kaye stopped them from going all the way too soon. I liked being able to follow alongside the protagonists and wonder, just as they did, whether they could take what they had found outside of the confined space. The awkwardness between them and their insecurities almost ruin their chances of being together, but Caden took the reins and led this to a most satisfying and sigh-worthy ending.

It's obvious that I loved this story, but my one and only complaint is that it was TOO SHORT!!! I wanted more of the ending. Did they stay together? Did he meet her family? How did it go? Were there wedding bells in the future? Children? I'd be happy with a teeny tiny future take of sorts, if the author were so inclined to write one on her blog *hint hint wink wink*

I'm not usually one for contemporary romance, but this short, sexy read actually hit the spot for me. Not only was there great sexual tension and hot love scenes, it also featured a hero who's tattooed and tough on the outside, but with a gentle vulnerability underneath. Win. And win again.

The entire story takes place in less than 24 hours, which immediately avoids one of the pitfalls of so many novellas. It doesn't try to cram too much story and character progression into a scant number of pages. It all starts when Makenna, a harried forensic accountant steps into an elevator with paramedic Caden Grayson. Neither of them sees the other's face before the power goes out, stranding them in the elevator between floors in the dark. That would be unnerving enough for anyone, but it's torture for Caden, who suffers from claustrophobia brought on by a trauma in his past.

Makenna is almost instantly aware of his discomfort and immediately works to sooth his frazzled nerves. They talk at length, getting to know each other in the hours that pass. A connection grows between them. At first it's just friendly, then it blossoms into attraction. That where that sexual tension comes in. Each of them wants to touch the other, but both struggle with nerves and self doubt. Obviously, they make the leap and the darkness only serves to ratchet up the heat factor between them. They do eventually make it out, but seeing each other brings all their insecurities right back to the surface, leading them to start their dance all over again.

I really liked both characters. Caden has just the right ratio of vulnerable and tough going on. I think I liked Makenna the most for how she treated him, how she soothed him, and saw the man underneath his armor. The two were a great fit and I enjoyed their alternating POVs. I also really liked the ending. A solid HFN is all I need for a story like this and I am so grateful there were no ridiculous proclamations of love after a day. Just right.

I have had this book on my the store Wish List for months. It was just sitting there staring at me every time I looked at my wishlist. I have never read anything by this author before and I wasn't sure I wanted to give it a chance even tho I've been LUSTING over the cover for quite some time. I finally just caved and got the book. Now I am pissed at myself for wasting all that time, because, I freak'n loved this book! I have seriously read it three times since I first read it. Part of that is because it's fairly short at about 100 pages and it's good for a quick read when I'm short on time and a larger part because I loved the story.

So basically the book starts out with Makenna rushing to the elevator after a crappy day. Because she is fiddling with so many things she doesn't get a look at the Good Samaritan holding the elevator for her. Caden is amused at the redhead trying to juggle a million things at once. All he is able to see of her is her gorgeous red hair. Almost immediately the lights go out and all of Caden's hard work and therapy to get over his extreme claustrophobia goes out with the lights. All of the sudden he is struggling to keep his ish together. It is Makenna's voice that pulls him out of his near panic.

Caden urges Makenna to keep talking with him, he reluctantly shares his phobia. What I loved about Caden is that he is able to share with Makenna. Despite the dark and the fact that she is a virtual stranger somehow even with the blackness pressing in on him they are able to connect and he opens up to her like he has never been able to before. His story is such a sad one and he is able to find some measure of comfort from Makenna and her kindness. She is so unlike anyone he has ever met and he knows he wants to see her after they leave the elevator, but he fears what she is going to think once those lights come back on. His exterior is a little rough around the edges and he worries that Makenna won't find him as attractive as he finds her, because she already knows about his sever baggage and his exterior may be too much to overcome in addition to his inner demons...

Makenna is a total sweetheart. She comforts a near stranger while he is bearing his soul. She helps him through a very difficult situation and helps him keep from freaking out. She realizes the gift he gives when he talks about his past and instinctively knows it's not easy for him. With each new discovery she cares more about this man. She worries about what he may think about her when he finally does see her, she knows he has a tattoo and thinks she may be too boring for someone like him, she's an accountant after all if that isn't the epitome of boring she doesn't know what is. He has such a tragic past; she knows that whatever his face may look like, his inner beauty will shine through.

I loved the whole elevator and not knowing what each other looks like aspect of this book. It's a bit different because there is no physical attraction to base the relationship off of at first. This forces the two to get to know each other on another level with no preconceived notions based on looks to get in the way. They find that they actually have a lot in common and being stuck in an elevator for hours with nowhere else to go means there is a whole lot of talking going on. In those hours they find out more about each other than people who have dated months. By the time they get out of the elevator something like 6-8 hours later it's like they have gone through the entire "getting to know you" stage of dating. Lol. It's like dating on speed! The physical insecurities of both Caden and Makenna are totally realistic and the same worries that any normal person would go through which also add to the realistic element of the story. I personally thought it was cute, and know I've gone through the same thing on the rare times I had agreed to a blind date. =)

I truly just loved this book. I even made my friend read it, she had no choice in the matter. LOL. So you should read it too! Come on now, you know you want to! Oh and I almost forgot to note this book is pretty HOT as well. Like burning up the pages hot.

I dont like telling people how to feel about a book, and I don't want to bash an author. So I can only say how I feel about a book, and how I came up with how I review them. When I read a book I judge it like this:
5 stars= LOVE it! Couldn't put it down and the story was amazing. I scream from the mountain tops for my friends to read it! Once or twice I may have told a friend I wasn't answering her calls until she read it. I think that highly of my 5* reviews :)
4 stars = Really like it. There was just something missing to where I wasn't in love, or there was something that bugged me. I would probably tell my friend to read it. If I thought they would like that kind of story.
3 stars= It was ok. It isn't bad, but I just felt "meh" while reading it and wouldn't recommend it to my friends
2 stars= I just really didn't like the book. Some books have really annoying characters, nothing at all happens, or I just dont feel connected to the characters so I dont want to keep reading. And if I dont feel connected then reading becomes a chore. I would not recommend these books to a friend. Or enemy :)
1 star= Didnt like it, and I couldnt finish. I have read around 400 books, and I have only given 3 or 4 a 1 star ratings.

I actually read this book ages ago. (August 8 2012), But the fact that I can still clearly remember it, as if I'd read it last night... speaks volumes about the impact this book had on me. I read and reviewed this book at a time, when I wasn't that big on writing full and lengthy reviews. In fact almost all my reviews dating back to August or so last year are all short and sweet. The reason for this is simply because I had not entirely gotten into the book review / blogger business yet :) But now that I have and since the Sharing is Caring Sunday Meme offers me a chance to recap on an old love... I thought I'd give this book the review it so rightfully deserves.

This is what I had to say way back when:

Ssshhheeeezzzz.... This book is so hot and I loved it. It was a little short and I really wanted it to go on longer but although it left me hanging a little it was by no means lacking in anything.

Hot, Sexy, Steamy... it's jam packed.

It was a unique story that was written so well I fell in love with the characters and I totally believed every moment.

A must read if you are looking for a quick read that gives you a thorough sexy thrill!

I know right... totally pathetic... It's not even a review... it's more like a text message, it's that short.

So anyway, back to giving this book another once-over especially put together for this amazing idea brought forth and organized by Sandra from Simply Sensational Book Fanatics.

Hearts In Darkness is brilliant! (haha) No that's not all I'm going to say... but if I left it at that... it would kind of be an #EnoughSaid- phrase.

The reason I love this book is because firstly it's written in both POV's... which I adore. It's gripping and enticing. When Makenna and Caden each walked into the elevator - they were so distracted and stuck in their own heads, each analyzing their own problems and responsibilities, they actually don't really notice each other. Now... I know that, that is very possible. I do it all the time. Sometimes I'll even drive somewhere and once I arrive - I can't even remember the drive or the music playing on the radio... so I get how this could happen...

Suddenly the power fails and the two are left alone in a dark elevator, only then noticing that they are not entirely alone. The chemistry between the two of them is so electric, that even in a blackout, they seem to be drawn to one-another.

The best part about this is that there were no - 'oh his blue eyes were like magnets bla bla...' nonsense. Their attraction to one another is buildup at a time when looks and the color of each others eyes do not factor into the equation... how refreshing is that? It's the true kind of desire and attraction... the kind we all want. Where looks and how you are dressed and how fat or skinny you are, are not even factored into the development of a relationship.

"He crowded right up into her space, pressed his body against hers--trapping her against the glass of the door behind her, plunged his hands into her hair until he was cupping the nape of her neck, and devoured her lips with his."

Now I don't want to give toooooo much away, since I really do want to encourage you to buy this freaking book... but another factor that I loved was the method and back stories that Laura Kaye used in order to bring these two together. I'm not talking about the part where they are alone in a dark elevator... what I'm talking about is the bond they seem to form when each of them are able to 'be there' for one another... to help them through... that's all I'm going to say. Anything more will spoil it and since it's a pretty short read, I need to be extra cautious because not a lot happens... but the little that does is... exceptionally hot :)

Read it! If you haven't... you seriously need to catch up with those of us that have. It's short, emotional, steamy and just super perfect for a Sunday afternoon, after lunch read... lol...

Oh.My.Goodness!!! and YUM!! Sinfully smexy!! Definitely not a YA!

Mackenna has had a long day and can think of nothing better than going home and having a big glass of wine. She's about to miss the elevator and being a nice guy, Caden holds the door for her. Mackenna, preoccupied with holding all of her bags and cell phone, only catches a glimpse of this guy's tattooed arm before the power goes out and the elevator stops. Caden for his part doesn't see anything of Mackenna except for her long red hair, and professional grey suit.

So now they are stuck in the elevator together, which is bad news for Caden. He is claustrophobic and is having a hard time until Mackenna starts talking to him. They start playing twenty-questions and talk about everything, and from there the attraction starts to build.

This story was a lot of fun, a quick read, and boy was there a lot of smexy *blushes thinking about it*! It is only 112 pages and the pages just flew by. I loved how these two got to know each other and how sight unseen they were attracted. This is my second time reading this (I was reading something else and got distracted!) and I really, really liked it, so I felt I should come back and give it a proper review!

That's a lesson learned in this book. Our hero is described as heavily tattooed and pierced, pretty much the kind of guy most people would cross the street to avoid on the assumption that he's nothing but trouble. However, Ms. Kaye humanizes him by giving him a very real fear of dark enclosed spaces, obviously making him the least intimidating person you can imagine.

Being devoid of their sense of sight due to the power outage, our main, and pretty much ONLY, characters are forced to get to know each other without any preconceptions. Let's face it, if any of us were ever stuck in an elevator, we'd never in a million years end up with someone this sweet or hot (keep in mind he's so sweet that we all think he's hot and we don't even know what he looks like). Instead we'd have the misfortune to end up stuck for hours with someone who is already married or a jerk. Probably both. Or heaven forbid, stuck in a crowded elevator where there's no room to stretch out. What ensues, however, is beautifully romantic.

This was my first sojourn in to the world of Laura Kaye and I couldn't be happier to have discovered her work. Do I have any complaints about Hearts in Darkness? Yes... it ended! I didn't want the story to end. Props to Ms. Kaye. You know you've written a great story when the readers' biggest complaint is that they wish it were longer.

Hearts in Darkness is one of the many books I own that I wonder how did I have this book for so long without reading it before now. Caden will also remain close to the top of my favorite hero list forever. He drives a Jeep and has tattoos and piercings. Yep, he was made for me. *sighs*

First of all big time kudos to Laura Kaye for kicking up the sexual tension early on in this book and keeping it simmering just below a boil for the entire book. Oh Caden and Makenna make one hot read. Could you imagine meeting under those circumstances. That alone makes this sweet romance all the more unique thus a must read.

Caden and Makenna quickly move from strangers to confidants as Caden reaches out for anything to calm the panic that is quickly rising to push him over. Makenna does not know anything about the man in the elevator with her other than she seems to calm his anxiety about their current predicament. The distraction technique brings Makenna and Caden closer together. They have far more in common that they ever would have expected. They just have to get past all the awkwardness that would have kept them from ever knowing each other once the power comes back on and sends them back into the real world and their very different lives.

This is such an amazing sweet love story. Treat yourself to something awesome and buy this book. I can promise you will not regret it.

Wow, this was a fantastic little read that I can see myself coming back to again soon. Short, sexy and just oh so good. The only thing that could have made this any better would have been a couple hundred more pages. Although in saying that this is perfectly complete in terms of story and unlike most novellas I never felt that our couple's sexy time was contrived or rushed. I just enjoyed them so much I wanted more. Always the sign of a great story.

Ah Caden, my new literary boyfriend, how I would love to get stuck in an elevator with you. Pierced, tattooed, skull trimmed and hitting all my Zsadist fantasy buttons (gah) this bad boy had me in bits from page one. He's also kind, insecure, lonely and somewhat tortured yet oh so delicious.

Makenna as our lucky heroine wasn't quite what I was expecting; despite her polished appearance and upper class job she had just as many insecurities as Caden did. Will he like what I look like? Will he think I'm homely? Will he want to see me again? This is what every girl thinks and made her relatable and much easier to insert myself into her psyche for fantasy purposes later on.

One of the things I really enjoyed here was how the author gave us the exact same moment from both POV's. Backtracking a conversation or action so that we could get the other persons internal thoughts and reactions to it. I've rarely seen this done before and it was awesome to get both sides. I mean how often are you left wondering how he/she feels and you're stuck in the wrong head?

One of my other favourite moments (and this is spoilery) is when Makenna finally gets to see Caden. She exclaims "You're freaking gorgeous." I loved this because up until the lights went on we (the readers) didn't really know what he looked like either. Of course looks are always subjective but I had thought this was going to be beauty and the beast type story, whereas it was more The Voice does dating. Highly recommended.

"Tell me, Red, you gotta say it out loud. I can't see your face or your eyes, and I don't want to make any mistakes here."

Hearts In Darkness by Laura Kayes

Makenna & Caden

Well, what can I say. This book was a gift from my friend Chris and I'm glad she made me read it!! Thank Chris! The book itself is not very elongated, but gets to the point right quick and in a hurry. It's 112 (Kindle Version) pages long and that's about all you need to get this story out and about! The first half pretty much takes place in a broken down elevator that's pitch dark and houses our two main characters. I sincerely thought that was pretty cool. I've never read something like this, where our main characters get to know each other without even seeing one another and it seemed like they both needed some kind of friend! It kind of reminds me of all the friends I've made on Facebook without even seeing them (in the flesh that is!) or hugging them. It's neither light-hearted nor dark, it just is!

Makenna and Caden are very likeable, very charming, and very much beautiful in their own way. Caden is certainly the more distressed one, however, being in a murky elevator for hours on end seemed to bring out the "good guy" in him and MaKenna capitalized on that. Smart girl! I especially liked that way they got to know each other through speech and touch! Wowza! Very diverse and very hot! Of course when they finally get out and the events that followed later... well, let's just say you'll be clutching your book/kindle and gasping for air from your heart palpitations!! There are no supporting characters in this one, but there are mention of family members. I wouldn't mind meeting one of Makenna's brothers, mmmmm!

The writing style is most definitely effortless to read and flowed very nicely. Everything seemed to get to point pretty fast and as the reader, I appreciated that. It's a short book for goodness sakes, the intro, meat in the middle, and finale were everything I needed and more. The discussion at the end kind of threw me for a loop, but I quickly conformed and finished reading!

There are some highs and lows, but nothing too scandalous or disturbing. The climax isn't really a climax, but a sort of an end to a chapter. I'm interested to see if the chapters continue with these two! ((wink wink))!! I'd for sure be on board with a sequel!

4 Stars!

"the store" really knows what kind of books I enjoy! So when this one was recommended to me by my favorite book dealer ;p I took the sample at first and forgot it on my kindle.
This morning at 1h30 A.M. I woke up and couldn't sleep anymore, so I took my kindle and remembered this book.
As soon as I started reading I got fascinated by Mrs. Kaye's writing and by the two characters that started to unfold in front of me.

Makenna and Caden are two strangers, that take the same elevator, without noticing each other too much until the light and the elevator itself shut down. Makenna's day couldn't get any worse and she is exhausted, but now sharing this elevator with an unknown sexy, claustrophobic stranger is a totally new challenge to her. Caden did not expect this sweet red hair to be able to calm him and draw to him that much. Both start to share their stories, their pains, their pleasures and fears. But what will happen when the light turn back on, Will they still fascinate each other?

The story has a great rhythm, nothing is too long, and nothing too short... the characters are wonderfully described. Both are equally sweet and fragile, respectful of the other and needy. Mrs. Kaye created two wonderful characters, I had no problem falling in love with. Both are so cautious to not force themselves on the other that the entire story becomes very realistic by a slow evolution.

I couldn't drop the book before finishing it. I loved its beginning, its end and everything in between. Well the smoking hot sex is not unpleasant either ;).

As a conclusion be aware that it is a short story (112 pages) without turns and twists in the plot, but simply a discovery of the two characters and their discovery of each other.

I hope you will enjoy this wonderfully romantic and hot short story. MBTM

I loved the story and how it developed! The range of emotion is off the charts and made me hungry for more. Makenna is strong, compassionate, gentle, and fun person with an easygoing manner. Caden is the scarred, tattooed, and pierced alpha male with a tragic history. I loved how they got to know each other; it was sweet, cleverly written, and wonderful to behold. I will definitely recommend this book.

Makenna enters the elevator not paying attention to her surroundings, being a bit distracted; she only glimpsed a muscular arm with a dragon tattoo while entering. The elevator stops then, went pitch black. Cade notices Makenna when she enters the elevator, he does not get to see her face but notices her red hair. He also finds her fidgeting humorous. When the elevator is stuck, for Cade he becomes a bit terrified of the dark because of his past. Both Makenna and Cade will use their time wisely while stuck in the elevator.

This was such a cute book with a dash of sexiness. I loved that Cade is not your typical male alpha in this romance novel. Even though he has his tattoos and piercings, he is shy and always unsure of how people perceive him. His characteristics work well in this particular story and he still seems sexy to me. Makenna is just your average girl who Cade thinks would not go for him because of the way he looks.

I did enjoy both characters getting to know each other while the lights were out in the elevator, it made for an interesting read. I also liked when the lights came back on, that moment was timed perfectly, but after the lights came on AWKWARD! Makenna and Cade had an awkward moment that led to uncertainty but later turns steamy again. I loved the concept of the story and I surely can relate to both characters. I would definitely read another book by this author.

Storyline: GOOD
Intimacy: GOOD
Enjoyment: GOOD

I have been wanting to read this novella for quite some time and I was finally able to purchase it off my wish list. It completely lived up to expectation.

Caden and Makenna get stuck on an elevator together with only brief glimpses of the other's appearance before the lights and electricity shut down and strand them between floors after most folk have gone home for the day. This allows all preconceived notions regarding appearances to not factor into the beginning of their relationship. Caden is terrified of dark enclosed spaces and spending this time talking with Makenna gets him through it. It is not long before they both decide that they are having the best time of their lives. Caden is worried that when Makenna sees his piercings, tats, and scars that she will reject him and Makenna worries that when he sees the plain woman then he will no longer be interested. What will happen when the lights come back on?

The plot and pacing were well done for this unique read that is mostly spent isolated in an elevator where their relationship is allowed to move along faster than average. The couple was allowed to truly connect with hours of time and nothing to interfere. I loved the build up to that inevitable moment when the elevator started to work again and the lights came on.

The characters were well written. I loved their dialogue which was what the story hinged on due to the circumstances. Their connectedness was a beautiful thing.

I highly recommend this one. Laura Kaye is becoming one of my auto-buy authors as this is the third brilliant story that I have read by her.

I cannot believe I am just now reading this book, it was published several years ago. But, I must say, this is a hearting warming and at times, a heart wrenching story. The blurb tempted me and I am thrilled it did. Caden and Makenna are compelling, well written, and great characters. You wanted them to get together and were cheering them on all the way. This book was fast paced, well developed, and had great tension through out. I just bought and am getting to read part 2 "Love in the Light" and can't wait to see how this story ends!!
I am voluntarily reviewing a free copy of this book.

I love this novella. Laura Kaye explores what could happen with 2 people who meet and get to know each other without relying on looks, misconceptions, and stereotypes. The result is a hot, sweet, and captivating short story that I am calling a must read.

In Hearts of Darkness, Caden and Makenna both get on an elevator and only get a brief glimpse of each other before the power goes out and they are stuck in the elevator in the dark. Caden is a big, tough guy, but he has issues. He is claustrophobic and being in the cramped, dark space is difficult for him. Makenna feels for him and helps to distract him. They begin talking and playing 20 questions. Without the distractions of looks and misconceptions based on appearance, they get to know each other for who they really are. The more they get to know each other, the more the attraction and chemistry between them builds. However, once the power is restored and the lights come back on, will they like what they see?

I loved this short story. Caden is a sweet guy, who hides behind tattoos and piercings. He has a traumatic past and his image gives him a certain armor, protection from being hurt again. When Makenna is able to see beyond his outer appearance and get to know the man, she finds a sweet, sincere person. Makenna herself is known for being a woman in a man's world. She has 3 brothers and she has a tendency to be "just one of the guys." When Caden gets to know her, he gets to know Makenna as a woman, and a smart, caring person. When the lights go on, and the elevator time comes to an end, both Caden and Makenna have to reconcile the people they were in the dark with their appearances.

There was nothing that I did not like about this novella. Sometimes in novellas there are too many concepts in too short of a story, but Hearts in Darkness was perfect. The story was written and developed very well, and I believed the romance between Caden and Makenna. Laura Kaye has written an amazing and captivating story. There is more to this short story than romance, it is a love story, and I highly recommend this novella to romance readers. This is not a paranormal romance, the genre is contemporary romance (don't be fooled by the tattoos on the cover, for some reason tattoos are linked with paranormals in my brain).

The more I read by Laura Kaye, the more I am convinced that I have found a wonderful new author. If you have not read any books by Laura Kaye, I recommend giving Hearts in Darkness a try. It is a short novella, but the story is fantastic, and you will not be disappointed.

I havent read a book like this in a really long time.

This book puts the LOVE back in a romance novel.

I couldnt put it down, the story was fast paced and original

Caden is one of the sweetest male characters Ive read in a really long time, I absolutely love how he is tattooed and pierced. I can see now whay this story has been rated highly and that there is a lot of love for Caden's character, What A MAN!!!

I love how Caden completely falls in love with Makenna, as they are trapped in the elevator they share not only their lives and loves but their souls. Makenna is wonderful also not whiny or callous or even aware of her beauty inside and out, I am really impressed with Laura Kaye on her choice of female lead she really captures a real woman someone we all aspire to be

Their attraction is very unique (As they are in the dark trapped on an elevator) they fall in love with their personalities and their minds way before their ever see each others appearance, it is beautiful to read how a couple fall for each other through this method.

The sex scenes are beautiful these are not just your typical sex scenes these are LOVE scenes a melding of souls it is spellbounding and erotic, this trait is often found in many of Laura Kayes writings, she has a wicked excellent talent.

I absolutely loved reading the story from both sides you get both Makennas and Caden's accounts of a scene how they felt, how they react to each other, wonderful.

Ive have read a number of Laura Kaye's novellas and novels and each time I am impressed a little bit more with her beautiful stories and characters and now this one can be added to the AWESOME list.
Laura Kaye is definately an excellent author I will be following throughout her writing career.

I read this book when it first came out and was surprised I didn't review it. I thought I would do so before going into book two. I remember thinking how can you write a book about two people stuck in an elevator. She did and she did it very well. I was captivated and read this book in one sitting. I loved that this was not a typical or trending plot. It was different in the best way. The characters are very well developed and so different from each other. The connection between the two seemed very organic and more exciting as it happened stuck in the dark. I was taken right away. I loved the writing and the great chemistry between the characters. beautifully written.

1. Loved the the plot
2. Great characters with amazing chemistry
3. Great storytelling

A sweet romance following Makenna James and Caden Grayson as they meet in an elevator during a power cut. With no lights, the only thing they can do is talk, get to know each other, and get through the night until they're rescued. Loved both these characters, and I've got to say the tattooed, pierced, bad boy is not as he seems. The fact of the matter is, these two might not have been paired in any traditional sense, but they are soul mates (in my eyes anyway). The straight laced accountant and the tattooed paramedic..........who would have thought? Light sexy enjoyable romance.

Being trapped in a dark elevator sounds awful, until you throw in a sexy man to keep you company. It's love at first sight, without any light to see. Makenna and Caden start out by talking to pass the time while they await rescue. The more they talk, the more they feel the spark between them grow. Things begin to get hot and heavy but the lights come back on. Caden worries that his extensive tattoos will turn Makenna off, but she knows there is more to Caden than meets the eye. What was easy in the dark isn't quite so simple in the light of the day. Makenna and Caden have to decide if they will listen to the instant attraction between them or walk away.

The whole sensory deprivation scenario was hot. It has been said that when one sense is denied, the others are amplified. Imagining the hyper aware sense of touch and sound makes the elevator scene intoxicating. When the lights came on I wanted to scream, "Why!?". Makenna and Caden really contemplate walking away. I knew they wouldn't because then we would have no story. This knowledge did not stop me from sweating it out. Laura Kaye ratchets up the sexual tension in Hearts in Darkness.

Even though I prefer longer books, this short story surprised me in the best possible way. I found theme of this story very fresh and original. I truly liked the idea about two strangers stuck in darkness of elevator and getting to know each other based only on their personalities. They were able to put aside all prejudices, not caring what the other person look like.

Both characters, Caden and Makenna, they are really sweet and adorable. Story has a rapid course and you will get to know both characters well in a very short time. Gradually, they reveal all their secrets and start to fall for each other even though they have never seen each other. Another thing which surprised me in a really good way, was switching narrators between Makenna and Caden. It helped me to know what exactly they were thinking and it dragged me more deeply into the story.

While reading this story, I could feel connection between two characters getting stronger. I could feel their passion and compassion for each other. I could feel Caden's anxiety about what will Makenna think about his oddities" when she sees him for the first time. I could feel Makenna's anxiety about what will Caden think about her ordinarities" when he sees her for the first time. And most of all, I could feel Caden's pain from his lost...

I am claustrophobic so this was quite challenging reading for me. But it was worth it! Apart from original story and adorable characters, this book has a huge bonus - it is super hot and sexy! I highly recommend this book, you won't regret reading it.

This was a short, though it was quite long for an e-novella. It's a steamy read about two seemingly opposite people who end up being trapped in an elevator when the power goes out. Makenna is an accountant who has had the worst day and is stuck in her own head (and her own problems) when she gets into the elevator. Caden is a tattooed and pierced guy (she snatches a peek at his dragon tattoo before the lights go out) who is actually afraid of dark and enclosed spaces. What could have been a poorly written erotic novella ended up being a really sweet and sensual read.

The two bond in the darkness learning each other's personalities before they even see one another, and they both worry about what the other will think in the light of day. The best part was that the romance continued after the elevator. It's truly a sweet read, and I enjoyed it way more than I thought I would (seriously, I could only think of elevator "scenes") and was surprised by how much I wanted Caden. If you're in the mood for something short, sweet and a little different, I'd pick up Hearts in Darkness.//

This is a stand-alone novel, but for more from this author check out Her Forbidden Hero and Forever Freed.

Short and awesome! I have always loved the idea of characters being trapped in an elevator together. Random, but true. So this book was a completely welcome read for me. It was written very well, I didn't want to put it down. I think it took me about 3 hours to read. I started it late atnight and stayed up till 12:15 am when I couldn't keep my eyes open anymore, and finished the rest the next afternoon.

This doesn't spoil anything, you know the lights have to come on at some point... Oh My God, when the lights came back on for good... holy crap that was an awesomely written scene! That's all I'm going to say.

Laura Kaye's novella Hearts in Darkness simply blew me away! I found this book while researching her website for a review of her paranormal romance, Forever Freed (another fantastic must read!) I saw the cover for Hearts in Darkness and immediately clicked on it because, well, it's so damn hot, who wouldn't? I was surprised to see it was a contemporary romance and not paranormal, but after reading the excerpt I was hooked. The novella was a quick read, but it felt like I had read a full length novel because of the emotional connection I felt with the characters. At no point did the story feel rushed like so many novellas can.

Caden is a surprising character, with his tattoos and piercings, you'd expect a tough alpha male type, but his personality and his past make him someone you'd love to snuggle up to and take care of. While we learn a lot about Caden throughout the story and not as much about Makenna, she is still a well-developed character with whom she's easy to identify. Their time alone in the dark elevator is filled with witty banter, sensual physical romance, and emotionally intimate conversations. The story keeps you intrigued and entertained throughout and disappointed that it's over at the end.

Hearts in Darkness is a must read for any fan of romance. Think you can't judge a book by its cover? You're right, this book is so much better than the cover and that cover is pretty close to perfect! Well, just to be sure, I think I'll go look at the cover again. Mmmm, yep, perfect!

Two strangers are trapped in an dark elevator, forced to share the past- present, truths and even fears to overcome the darkness within the confined space. A bond grows between two completley different people , both torchured souls, which leads to an unseen attraction. They like what they see even if sight is unseen. Comfortably they chat, and find they have alot in common.
Caden and Makeena are imperfect - Caden suffering from the past and Makeena a broken heart, find themselves comforted by each other . Makeena helps Caden overcome his claustraphobia - funny moments that will also have you snorting and smiling at there antics.

Caden is hot - buzz hair cut, piercings and ink, and Im sure in a dark alley you wouldnt like to cross paths with him. Makeena in her pin stiped suit, fiery read hair and business like sense, and appearance, they both seem like chalk in cheese. But it shows in times like this, a book can not be judged by its cover. aka (( appearances are only skin deep ))

Laura has created realistic characters, with flaws, and apprenshion, to make this story an intriguing and smexy ** wink wink ** read. Humour is present, which I found myself to giggling at times, lighter moments, this I enjoyed. Electricity and sparks where flying between Caden and Makeena, it was sensual and lustful but smexy !!!

I could feel that heat in the elevator between the characters, it definelty had me piqued and eagerly reading right till the very end. A read I assure you , you will read from beginning to end in record time. !!!! Only a quickee read , Im sure will have you out of breathe but wanting more !! An enjoyable read, with great storyline, that runs at a fast pace, with no pit stops, ** unless you call the elevator light springing into motion ** lol.. Right till the very end. A great read from Laura with all the goodies ** wink wink ** for any quickee !!! ;)

Cover is hawt - and whats inside could melt tips of the icebergs !!!

Claudette's Review

I really enjoyed this story and loved how the author made the story of two strangers trapped in a lift together, both poignant and sexy. I came to really care about these characters, and felt I knew them. The author injected this novel with so much emotional warmth I reveled in it. Makenna and Caeden only catch the merest glimpse of each other in the elevator, before it suddenly halts and all the lights go out. This mishap is the cap on the end of a truly crappy day for both of them.

Caedon is seriously claustrophobic and finds that Makenna's voice and the sound of her moving around in the dark push back his panic. As the first hours pass with no sign of either the lights coming back on or that anyone is coming to rescue them soon; they talk and find themselves sharing details about themselves they've never shared with anyone else. Perhaps it's the intimacy of talking in the dark, and having to rely on their hearing and sense of touch only; but these two very different strangers connect in a way they would never have done under normal circumstances. Caedon is a paramedic, tall with a shaved head, facial piercings and tattoos. His looks usually intimidate people, and he uses them as a shield to keep people away.

Makenna is an overworked accountant, on the surface she appears prim and conservative, but she has a great sense of fun. A bubbly redhead, she has just the kind of open optimism and joy in living that draws Caedon out of the nightmare of being trapped in a small box in the dark, to the warmth of Makenna's voice.

Their sharing leads to laughter and from there? I'm not going to tell you if they have sex in the elevator or not. You'll just have to buy the book and read it yourself. You won't be disappointed when you do.

What an awesome read! I loved every moment of this book. I sooooooooo want to be stuck in an elevator. Lol. Mind you it could only be with a man like Caden Grayson! Oh the feels for this sweet, shy, tender yet so strong and caring male is beyond wonderful. In this story Cade and MacKenna get stuck in an elevator that has gone pitch black cue panic attack and claustrophobia and we have a passionate story. I don't want to give away too much, suffice it to say that they both deserve a HEA! I fell in love with Cade instantly and adored that MacKenna was the type of woman to love a man scarred emotionally that she saw his true inner self! Loved it!

Caden Grayson is amused when a redhead literally falls at his feet. His amusement turns to panic when the power fails. Despite his piercings, tats, and vicious scar, he's terrified of the dark and confined spaces. Now, he's trapped in his own worst nightmare.

To fight fear, they must both reach out and open up. With no preconceived notions based on looks to hold them back, they discover just how much they have in common. In the warming darkness, attraction grows and sparks fly, but will they feel the same when the lights come back on?

I adored this book! No joke! I found it to be so unbelievably sexy, but also so enduring that my heart ached and worried that these two people would walk away from each other without exploring what could be further. I love love love that it wasn't just sex all the time. It was passion and it was insanely beautiful.
My only downside to this book, it was too short. THIS is the type of story that makes me want to see how everything turns out. Caden is so damn sexy and vulnerable and it made him an even better hero than the strong dominant types. Makenna is lovely in every single way. I love how sweet she is and how genuinely she feels things. I adore them together. She is his strength and he is her confidence. What more could two people be for each other?
Perfection.

Who has never dreamed of being stuck in an elevator with a handsome guy?

Me! I would go ballistic thinking about my last hours coming deprived of oxygen (I know I have a vivid imagination). I would also be distressed not to be able to go to the restroom and that would keep me really nervous.
Excuse me to be a little down to earth but the call of nature seems to be blind even in front of a power failure especially if it lasts for hours...
So I was impressed by the author who manages to ignore such details for a long time to focus on the romantic part.

Quite honestly, I think after I would have broken my voice calling for help to let me out, I might have asked God to be saved by Superman but certainly not tempted to succumb to the charms of a stranger. Of course, this is my very pragmatic side... That is why the fantasy of this story amused me. I would say that it was so far removed from me that it allowed my imagination to take off!

So I enjoyed this fun and very cute romance. No sarcasm in my tone ... I find this story really adorable. And of course, there is a happy ending to please the hopeless romantic.

A nice book, well written entertaining that makes you spend a good time in a place not usually really sexy!

I just wonder how it would have turned for the heroin if she had been locked with a paunchy smelling sweat guy... LOL!

There is not a person alive that doesn't understand the frustration of a bad day, me included. It was for that exact reason that I immediately connected to the story.
From the moment Makenna spoke her first word on the pages of Hearts in Darkness, I was interested. Once Makenna started laughing and snorting in the evaluator, I was riveted. I found myself not only being humored, but actually laughing out loud at some of the banter between Makenna and Caden as they sat locked in a dark elevator.
Laura Kaye reaches out with this quick fun read to enthrall readers from the get go. She made sure to touch on so many basic human emotions and that I felt completely drawn into the story by the third page. I watched as the feelings of frustration, anger, humor, rejection, empathy, compassion, lust and love between the characters evolved. I even cheered it on.
The plot is short, to the point and just down right fun. The words are written clearly and give meaning to the visual they are trying to represent. Makenna and Caden are so well explained as characters to make you feel you actually might know them.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a fast paced, no putting down book filled with laughter and lust. I am hoping that the next time I get locked in an elevator; I have a tall dark and very mysterious man beside me to see if I can relive the story.

Makenna James was busy celebrating Murphy's Law when Murphy out did himself and caused the elevator she was in to breakdown. Not only was her day wrecked, but she was on the verge of a hysterical breakdown in front of a pierced and tattooed stranger in a pitch black sweatbox. Caden Grayson was terrified of dark enclosed spaces due to trauma suffered in a childhood car accident that resulted in the death of his mother and younger brother. To look at Caden, no one would believe this tough looking behemoth would be afraid of anything. The only thing keeping him sane is the hysterical redhead in the corner of the elevator. Things are not looking good.

I absolutely adored this sweet little parable about not judging books by their cover. It is indeed a message that bears repeating, and Laura Kaye has found an utterly charming way to tell it. In complete darkness, Caden and Makenna are stripped down to the bare essence of what makes them human, and without the visual trappings to hinder them, they discover a commonality that brings them together on the most basic of levels. It is only after they are rescued that visual cues are misinterpreted and problems arise. If only everyone took this theme to heart.

The heat in the broken elevator did nothing to quell the ardor that these to were generating. It was a passion of the soul and not of the eyes. It was the perfect short read and I highly recommend this enjoyable tale.

This was a 5-Star Short Story!! I really wished it was longer!!

So Makenna is a forensic accountant and she is running late. She rushes toward the elevator and when it is about to close, a man holds out his hand to hold the elevator for her. She notices the head of a dragon tattoo on his hand. When she gets into the elevator she drops her purse. So she bends down to pick up her stuff and the elevator door closes....

All of sudden there is a jolt and it goes completely black...She is alone in the elevator with a stranger.

Caden is in there with her. He is afraid of closed in spaces and it doesn't help that is pitch black.

Caden and Makenna have the best conversation ever! They are witty and sweet. I loved it! Caden is afraid that she won't like what she sees when the lights turn on. He is covered in tattoos, has two piercings on his lip, and a bolt through his eyebrows.

Caden has had tragedy in his past...and he finds it so easy to open up to her and really hopes that she would give him a chance when the lights turn on and they leave the elevator. They get so close in the elevator and it gets HOT and STEAMY!! It is so weird how you can feel that comfortable with a person that you have never seen.

HEARTS IN DARKNESS is the first published novel by author Laura Kaye and her most recent re-release of a stand alone novel. If you like a fast paced, one of a kind romance story with a quick friends to lovers to love premise HEARTS IN DARKNESS is the perfect read.

The premise focuses on Makenna James and Caden Grayson who are trapped in an elevator- no light and no power. Over the course of four hours Makenna and Caden play a game of twenty questions and learn more about one another than many couples who have dated for weeks. And in those four hours Makenna will learn that there is more to Caden than just tattoos and piercings. The man is a walking canvas of therapeutic ink and scars.

Hearts in Darkness is a fast paced, interesting storyline where most of the events occur in a four hour time period in the confines of a powerless elevator. Laura Kaye pulls the reader into the story using creative detail so that we too must feel our way around to understand the emotional turmoil and anxiety of being trapped. Like our couple, we are blind to the visual description of the characters and must slowly uncover the possibilities of what is to come.

Hearts in Darkness tells the story of Makenna and Caden who get stuck in a lift. They only catch the briefest glimpse of each other before they are plunged into darkness. With nothing else to do they play 20 questions to find out about each other. Due to the darkness they have no preconceptions of looks to base their opinions on and they discover the more they find out about each other the more they like. But what will happen when the lights come back on and they can see what the other looks like.

This is a wonderful short story and really well written by Laura Kaye. I loved that we didn't know what the characters looked like either until a piece of information was revealed and then it was only small hints. Would I change my opinion of them once the lights came on? It was so exciting seeing how the story would end. It is pretty hot what they get up to in the lift as well.

I would have given this book 5 stars but two things stopped me. One was I wanted the book to be longer and two was the last part of the book. Whilst it was still good it was not as good as the first part. This is an enjoyable quick read and I highly recommend it. I am going to give Hearts in Darkness 4 stars.

This was a pitch perfect little story about two strangers caught in a pitch black elevator for several hours. McKenna and Caden can't even see each other. All he knows about her was the glimpse he got of her before the lights went out that she had great red hair (he never saw her face). All she knows of him is that he has tattoos (she never saw anything else).

The two commiserate, then talk and laugh and get to know each other and then they start to feel....something. They connect really well in the darkness in the hours they are there. The author did a great job of making the progression of relationship in that small space, in that small time seem just right. The conversation felt like what two strangers would have at first, then two people who realize they are starting to connect and later two people who want to know each other much better. I loved the aspect that they couldn't see each other. They couldn't rely on physical attractiveness to be the basis of their attraction. They got to know each other just through words and voice. It was all the stuff they learned about each other in the dark hours that made them attracted to each other.

After they get out, the awkwardness, the uncertainty all felt very authentic. It is just how you imagine two people might feel after they had an incredibly intense relationship that only evolved in the last few hours.

Good writing, good flow. Somewhat reminiscent of the vibe I got when reading Cara McKenna or Anne Calhoun.

Highly recommended.

What would you do if you found yourself trapped in a pitch black elevator with a stranger for 4 hours?

This is what happens to Makenna James and Caden Grayson. Makenna has had the day of all days and then ends up stuck in an elevator with a man that she only got a glimpse of. Caden finds himself smiling when he sees a head full of red hair rush into the elevator, that is, until the elevator stops and the lights go out and Cadens’ claustrophobia kicks in.

A short story but full of emotion and heart makes this story the perfect quick read. Characters that have depth with a truly original setting, Hearts in Darkness will take you on a journey and leave you more than a little flushed with the heat that Makenna and Caden create!

The chance to get to know someone without any preconceived images of how they look gives this couple an opportunity to think with their hearts, but what will happen when the lights come back on? Be sure to pick this one up by Laura Kaye to find out!

This is the first novella that I have read by Laura Kaye and I loved it!! Caden & Makenna were great characters and this novella was short, but it packed a punch. I loved that the "normal" roles were reversed in this book; Makenna was a strong business woman and Caden was the quiet one. Laura Kaye really delved deep and had me so anxious for what would happen next. There was so much sexual tension and passion in this novella and I loved that!! These two characters may have looked like opposites, but they are perfect for each other!! I am excited to start the second novella in this duet and I can't wait to read other books by Laura Kaye!!

Have you ever heard of the saying, "Love is blind"? Well that hasn't been more true than it is here! Hearts in Darkness is a quick, heart warming and sexy read from author Laura Kaye, who I've come to think of as a 'sure thing' now. ;) lol

An unbelievably sweet story about a sexy tattoo and pierced man who is still hurting from a loss in his past that meets the woman of his dreams in an elevator. But neither of them know what each other even look like after the elevator looses power and gets stuck between floors for several hours. Whats a young man and woman to do in the stifling confined space to pass the time? Well, you'll just have to read to find out!

I loved every minute of this captivating and entertaining ride. Laura Kaye brings two fantastic and alluring characters to life on the pages with Makenna and Caden. Quick, genuine and a story that is masterfully woven together, Hearts in Darkness is a must read for contemporary romance fans and for the price how can you pass it up?

This was a wonderful story from page one and it definitely kept my interest. Who says opposites don't attract? They certainly do in this wonderful love story between a forensic accountant and a Paramedic with tattoos and piercings.

This was a heartwarming story that really brought tears to my eyes. The heroine with her heart of gold and the Hero with his gentle, kind, loving & considerate ways, had my kindle smoking.

Thank you, Laura Kaye, for this loving and romantic love story about two very loving an warm people that may not have come together under normal circumstances.

I was shocked that the author was able to get me as involved as I was in such a short time frame. Due to it's length, the story jumped with immediate drama and never let up till the very end. It's not car chasing, murders, or crazy stuff, just sweet and heartwrenching. The book is short, but so full of emotion, sensuality and left me missing just one thing, MORE....These 2 characters drew me right in and I found that I really really wanted it to work for them because I totally felt Caden and thought he deserved a break and a happy ending. I loved it and will always check to see who i get into an elevator with from now on...

Darkness strips away all senses and allows people to see past looks and perceptions and into the heart of the person. On one unfortunate evening two people, leaving late, end up trapped in the darkness of an elevator.

When you're stuck in the dark with nothing to do but talk the getting to know you part of the relationship moves quicker than it would out in the light of day. The darkness allows confidences you couldn't tell others.

The romance was sweet, the characters engaging and interesting.

While I don't see the couple as having lasting potential outside of the elevator. I didn't see wedding bells and happily ever afters in their future the happily right now was just as satisfying as any happily ever after I've read.

A definite read for anyone who loves sweet romances.

I've never been stuck in an elevator, but I'm thinking it wouldn't be so bad to be trapped with a tattooed, buzz-cut, pierced, claustrophobic paramedic.

I loved how this relationship developed quickly and all in the dark without either Caden or Makenna really knowing what the other one looked like. Their desire, feelings and the connection they made were based solely on their hours of conversation and playing 20 questions in the dark, confined space.

Did I mention Caden is claustrophobic...in a big way? Listening to Makenna "MJ's" soothing tones while in that elevator was like a lifeline Caden used to keep his panic at bay. His story about why he was claustrophobic was so heart-wrenching. Sad to think such a little boy suffered as he did. His fears about what MJ would really think of him when she saw the real him (piercing and tattoos) were a very real concern for him. Well he didn't need to be worried because he was "freaking gorgeous".

The elevator may not have been working, but Caden and MJ were firin' on all cylinders!

Fate works in mysterious ways and even finds a way to make a match in the dark! It was refreshing to see MJ and Caden make a connection before they ever had the chance to let their looks influence their feelings.

This was a quick, hot read.

This was a little better than "ok" for me. I don't mind that it's short; I prefer that over a story that is way too long and goes on and on. But in reality I guess it was hard for me to buy meeting a hottie in an elevator and then just hours later having him spending the night and having hot sex. I didn't really feel attached to either character. I felt that there wasn't much of a back story for her. I felt that I didn't really "Know" either character, but that's what comes with a short book, so that's ok. But it was just a bit far fetched (maybe forced feeling) and then pretty predictable. The writing was fine.

This certainly is one attention grabbing book and hot from the get go. For a short story it didn't disappoint and left me wanting more, how I wish it had been longer! We got to meet Makenna James also known as M.J and Caden Grayson and treated to the awesome story of how they're worlds collide when they meet in a elevator (what is it about elevators) and then they get plunged into darkness! Well, after the plunging its a bloody hot read and you won't be disappointed! I for one have never wanted to be trapped in a elevator so much since reading Hearts In Darkness. Download it today, its the right thing to do!

I read a few recommendations for this book via Facebook, the cover had immediately drew me in. I had taken the time to "like" her and read the product information for the book, I knew I'd have to give it a try. It did not disappoint. The characters and the situation you were put in could really happen to just about anyone. Having them meet in such a way, was perfect. So many of us base those first impressions on looks, these two didn't get that chance. They had to rely on their instincts and conversation to find something meaningful.

For my first Laura Kaye novel, I will be sure to pick up the rest.

I have to admit that ever since I heard about this book, it's been on my TBR list. I sat down to start it late the other night and quickly realized I had made two huge mistakes. 1.) I waited waaaaay to long to read it, and 2.) I shoulda started it waaaaaaay earlier in the day. I had to stop reading because of the time and then had to wait one whole agonizingly long day before I could pick it up again. I thought about the characters all day and couldn't WAIT to find out what happened between them. As far as I could tell, there was only one thing wrong with this book. It was no way near long enough. Kudos to this author on a stellar story. I loved it! LOVED IT!

This was a great novella. The plot was interesting, and the conversation between the two main characters flowed very well. I loved how they got to know each other and had a spark without physical appearances factoring into things. Makenna was such a sweet comfort to Caden, and he was a passionate and truly great guy. Both of their POVs were enjoyable to read. The character development was surprisingly good for such a short read. I am definitely a Laura Kaye fan after reading this one.

This book was the epitomy of sweet romance! Definitely a read for adults only! I loved how the author flip flopped between the main character's, Caden and McKenna's, point of view - it was very refreshing to read a story in this way. I usually pick stories in first person but when I read the first page, the author hooked me immediately! I like the premice of being trapped in an elevator in darkness, it was great to see the chemistry between both Caden and McKenna unfold. I also liked how there was mystery surrounding both of them and not just because of being trapped in a dark, hot elevator!

A great, yummy read for late night or early morning.

A mysterious, brooding hero. (CHECK!) A smart, likable heroine with a good sense of humor. (CHECK!) A chance meeting that throws them together. (CHECK!) And romantic chemistry that just won't quit! (CHECK!)

Hearts in Darkness is a compelling romance with believable characters you quickly come to care about. As they navigate the discomfort of being trapped in an elevator, they learn about themselves and each other. And when they get together--whoo-wee! The sparks fly and the romance is majorly hot and steamy!

I absolutely loved this short read. It's a great story and one I will read more than once. Two main characters, Caden and Makenna who distractedly meet in an elevator which conveniently breaks down forcing them to get to know each other in complete darkness. The characters were exceptionally written, you can easily believe they are real people. The moments shared between Caden and Makenna are intense and extremely romantic. Made me fall for Caden myself. You won't regret this read.

Short but sweet!
I read this in one sitting because I had to see Makenna's reaction to Caden! Then I had to see what happened when they left the elevator. Caden's appearance was his way of dealing with and feeling emotional issues along with keeping people away. They seem like such an unlikely fit but I guess that's the point of the story. Her positive and humorous outlook is refreshing. Caden's "bad boy" persona only to be destroyed by the "Good Sam" inference is a great reminder to always look deeper

I love when an author can take a familiar theme and make it fresh and original, and Laura Kaye did that with Hearts of Darkness. I will admit to buying the novella wondering how she would handle the getting-stuck-on-an-elevator-with-a-stranger theme, and I was not disappointed. I loved that MJ and Caden got to know each other in the dark, talking, feeling the pull, yearning, and desire for more without actually ever seeing each other. It unfolded in intriguing layers of increasing sexual tension--which is so much fun--and ended with a satisfying and erotic bedroom scene. Caden being claustrophobic added to the originality and depth of his character, and the development of both H/h was done well in the novella length of the story. A very enjoyable read!

Hearts in Darkness by Laura Kaye

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

WHAT AN AWESOME READ!! Thank you Ms Kaye : )

I'd heard all sorts of great things about this book, and the reviews only made me want to read it more. The cover is to die for and I thought illustrated how Caden looked in my mind perfectly.

I loved the banter between the hero and heroine, and the fact Caden was terribly claustrophobic only made me want to wrap my arms around him all the more.

The author worked the sexual tension between these two wonderfully well, and it just kept got hotter and hotter, until I had to tear myself away from my ereader for a breather! This is a keeper and one I'll enjoy re-reading for many a time yet.

What a great read! I recommend to all who love a HOT read with quick, witty dialogue and fun characters.

Who knew you could find love in a stuck, pitch black elevator. I love the idea. To meet a complete stranger and not even get a glance of what they look like and you plunged into complete darkness. You really get to know the person with a series of questions. This is well written with amazing characters

First appearances can be deceiving. Caden Grayson and Makenna James find themselves trapped in an elevator. Neither previously 'noticed' the other. So - when the two are plunged into darkness - both must rely on the other to get through the situation. Both learn more about the other and find themselves on a sensual 'high'. When the lights come on - the couple find that appearances are totally deceiving. Will the two find that `love is blind'?

Loved this short story. Laura Kaye does an amazing job describing this hot duo!! This was a steamy read that left me wanting more of Caden and Makenna. It also leaves me humming `Love In An Elevator' a lot more!!

When it comes to interpersonal attraction, there is very little getting around the role that physical appearance plays. It's simply a fact of life: most of us are visual creatures, and he or she with the prettiest surface will get the chicks...or the dudes. But what if that oh-so-important sense of sight was taken away at initial meeting and we had to rely upon our other senses to form the basis of an attraction? Having to rely on sound, touch, scent, and taste for that initial impression is an intriguing, almost stimulating, proposal.

In her novella "Hearts in Darkness," Laura Kaye gives us a romance based on just this premise. Two people who have barely glimpsed each other beforehand are tossed into darkness and close proximity and must rely on each other for comfort, companionship, and support. And out of this, affection, attraction, and even passion are born. Yes, this is complete fantasy material, because if such a situation happened in real life, it could possibly result in a disaster. But oh what a fantasy Ms. Kaye gives us! I found this story to be a good time indeed. It is sweet and very sensual, with two well-drawn and likable main characters and a few love scenes that will leave you squirming in your seat.

I must be on a cover kick lately, because I have to say that I truly dig the cover of Hearts in Darkness. In a word: me-ow! It is sexy and classy at the same time. When I first picked this story up to read, I made both of my review partners look at the cover - just sharing, you know. The results were three feminine thumbs up and an enthusiastic "yowza" as well.

Ms. Kaye's main characters are extremely personable. They are imperfect and human and interact in a way that is both fun and relaxed. We can almost feel the romantic tension building in the dark between them during the first part of the story; this is good tension, however, not negative energy. It builds and builds and builds... until bang! (And don't bother to pull your dirty little minds out of the gutter, because I certainly did mean it in just that way.)

Caden is a deliciously edgy hero, complete with buzz-cut, piercings, and ink. Some folks might not appreciate this kind of a man, but he certainly flipped all of my switches. Even in the dark, when we can't see him, he is appealing. His panic attacks feel real to us, and how can we resist a big tough guy who is scarred and hurting inside and who possibly needs the heroine more than she needs him?

When the sense of sight is completely taken away, other senses are intensified. Ms. Kaye does an excellent job of working with the pitch dark during the first half of this novella, emphasizing sound, touch, taste, and scent. The scenes where Caden and Makenna make physical contact in the elevator in the darkness are very sensual indeed. When that physical contact is taken into the light, the sex is hot and sweet and playful and realistic between them. I appreciate when romances don't take coitus too seriously, when authors allow their characters to have fun with each other, so I enjoyed this aspect of the story.

"Hearts in Darkness" ends on a sweet note, with a promise of tomorrow that will make you smile, warm your heart, and lead you to want the very best for these two lovers, however fictitious they may be. This story may be a quick read, but it is also an excellent one. I'm quite impressed.

Have you ever met someone with whom you can be yourself, your every flaw and insecurity exposed but never judged or rejected? Makenna and Caden each have their own self-doubts, Caden more so than Makenna, and this made me really like them. They are both so real.

I can understand how Makenna may think she is too plain or conservative-looking for Caden who has that bad-boy image down pat. He's dark, moody, and intense, with a skull trim, facial piercings, scars and loads of ink. For all this tough guy look, Caden is afraid that Makenna will be turned off by his looks. And having connected to each other emotionally in that dark elevator, relying not on visual impressions but on true feeling, they are wondering just what the other will really see when the lights are back on. I loved this anticipation.

For me, Caden is the real star of this little story. He does look kind of dangerous and intimidating, but there's so much more hiding under this rough exterior. I can't resist a bad boy with a painful past and a need to belong to that one woman who completes him, giving him what he desperately needs but is too afraid to ask for.

This story is not long or complicated in plot, but it is full of feeling, from the vulnerable characters, the deep connection between them, the sweet and tender interaction, to the playful and fun sex scenes. It's just a really intimate exploration of tender emotion between two people who want to find that one place of belonging and acceptance, that forever place.

Makenna's having a rotten day on top of a rotten day. We've all been there. You spill your coffee on your shirt, you're late for work, your boss yells at you for something that isn't your fault, you break something. Take anything that could go wrong in a week and stick it in one day and that's where she is when she gets stuck in the elevator with Caden. I thought she was the most "real" character and I loved the way she reacted to the situations. She handled nearly everything exactly the way I could imagine myself doing (well, there are some things mid-book that I would not be doing with a stranger). She was funny, compassionate, had a normal job, normal life - apart from being in an elevator with a screamingly sexy guy, she was written perfectly realistically.

Caden was really the star of the book. He'd had a hugely traumatic event in his childhood that caused his claustrophobia and fear of being confined in the dark but he was trying not to lose it in front of Makenna - not really succeeding, but trying. He gets her to start talking to him to distract him and then they just talk and talk. Caden is utterly charming - he's sweet and hilarious, doesn't take himself all that seriously sometimes and is attracted to Makenna but sort of shy about it. When they finally get around to having that first kiss - after all the talking they did before it, it feels like they were on a dozen dates first and it's really powerful and sexy.

The story only takes place over the span of a bit less than two days, most of it in the elevator in the dark. I thought it was so clever - it didn't feel unnatural for the characters to learn each other's life stories at all. They had to talk about something while they were trapped so they traded little anecdotes, just pieces of each other's pasts and enough that there was a feeling that they got to know each other. Keeping them in the dark also let Caden and Makenna be attracted to each other without making assumptions based on what they looked like. Obviously Caden's appearance had something to do with his past - he had tattoos that all had meanings related to his life experiences as well as some piercings. Makenna was pretty straight-arrow, even a little insecure.

I think the ending was really perfect for these two and the experience they had in the elevator - and it was exactly as sexy as I knew it would be based on that kiss.

I loved finding this and being so pleasantly surprised. This is a sexy and fun little story that is definitely staying on my Kindle and will be reread and I'm going to be checking out more books by this author. Even though I do shamefully occasionally buy books based partially on their great covers, in this case I'm happy I bought one in spite of a mediocre one.

I absolutely loved this novella (and like most, only wish it was longer!). Short romances almost invariably get bad ratings from me, because I'm unable to believe any lasting connection, but in this case I had no trouble with that. I found the idea of this new relationship fully believable and wholly enjoyable - and much sweeter than I expected.

HERO:
Caden was such a fantastic hero. He's big and buff, tattooed, has piercings and a shaved head - if you saw him walking towards you in a dark alley you'd think twice about staying there - however he's one of those absolutely teddy bear heroes that's gruff on the outside but a softie inside (he works as an EMT). A lot of times those types of heroes are gruff to everyone until the heroine breaks him down, but here Caden's only "gruffness" is really only his outer appearance. He's actually quiet and somewhat shy, and I loved how sometimes he was tentative and vulnerable, not sure how he should act with her or how far to go, and other times he was so passionate and possessive. From the beginning he's very sweet and kind towards Makenna, which I loved.

HEROINE:
Makenna was a great heroine, but I actually didn't feel like I knew her as well as I did Caden by the end of the book. When we're with Caden's POV, I feel like we get much more insight into his personality, thoughts, and insecurities than we do for Makenna when we're with her POV. I liked her though, and I'm often tougher on heroines than heroes. She's hard-working, intelligent, sweet, and has a good sense of humor. She's used to being considered one of the guys and while not supremely confident about her attractions, she's definitely not insecure - which from other people's comments/shelving had been what I was expecting.

THE ROMANCE:
Honestly, I was not going into this with high expectations. I thought I would probably find the whole thing somewhat sleazy if these two people who don't know one another get stuck in a dark elevator with each other and then have sex (for those worried about this as well: they don't get that far in the elevator, but after). Basically, I wasn't sure how much of a "romance" this would actually be, but I was very pleasantly surprised. Normally I hate - hate! - instant attraction, one night stand romances, etc., but none of that felt like it was part of this story.

There is definite chemistry between the two and Kaye writes wonderful sexual tension, but I felt like they did get to know one another and certainly had an emotional/intellectual connection as well; I loved the conversation between them and their back and forth banter. They can't see one another, so while they're intrigued by the little they did notice about one another before the lights went out (her red hair, his tattoos), that's not the basis of how they start their relationship. I think the fact that they're in the dark allows both of them to let their guard down from the beginning much more than they might otherwise. It also allows them to look beyond the outer appearance - Caden, the big, scary guy and Makenna, the boring accountant.

CRITICISMS:
One of the most annoying things throughout the book was that there were no space breaks between POV transitions. It made it so that each time the POV switched I wouldn't really realize it until the end of the first or second paragraph; minor complaint, but since it could have been so easily fixed it bugged me all the more. Also didn't like how the transitions would rehash what had just happened but from the other character's POV. Other than that, I had a little eye-rolling towards the end when Makenna offers her interpretation of what Caden uses his tattoos for and he has this shocked oh-my-god-this-woman-can-see-right-into-my-soul reaction. Again, minor, but this book was so great I don't have any major complaints to share!

BOTTOM LINE:
As unusual as the circumstances of them meeting are, the entire encounter - and what follows - felt realistic, as if I could meet these two people and completely believe that they met that way and were still together. Their conversations were cute and funny, their thoughts and feelings sweet, and their chemistry was sizzling. All in all, a perfect novella and one I am so glad that I bought! Laura Kaye is a brand new author whom I hadn't heard of before, but I will now definitely be keeping my eyes out for her future work.

I didn't believe it. I was skeptical that a book (even a novella) could be written and take place in the span of less than 12 hours and I would enjoy it. I thought, surely it is mostly about sex. What else could possibly keep a book moving when most of it took place in an elevator? I was happily proven wrong.

This is the second book I have read by Laura Kaye and it has fueled interest in more of her books. Yep, time to go shopping for more. Back to Hearts in Darkness, though. It starts out innocently enough when Makenna is running to catch an elevator after a long, crappy day and Caden holds the door open for her. Nothing out of the ordinary, until the elevator stops, and all the lights go out. Now they are both stuck in a pitch-black elevator and Caden is close to having a panic attack as he is claustrophobic. They are stuck there for hours with no phone to call for help.

So starts the two of them getting to know each other, because what else is there to do? Caden isn't a guy that lets a lot of people get to know him but Makenna's voice and conversation is what keeps the panic attacks at bay. They share and learn more about one another in those few hours in the elevator than most people do when dating for weeks or even months. What I love about this situation is that because they don't really see one another before the lights go out, they get to know each other on an intellectual and emotional level - not physical.

They are finally rescued (sorry for the spoiler but you could have guessed that) and then we get to watch the weirdness that comes with the lights on seeing each other for the first time. Where they had confidence in darkness, both Caden and Makenna show some doubts in the light. They continue their night at her place getting to know each other. And you know what? It isn't all about sex. Yes, they have such a strong draw to one another and their need for intimacy is met, but the way Laura writes it makes it more emotional than physical. It fit the story and the characters perfectly. I am really picky about my love scenes. I don't like them out of place and just there to sell a book. I like them to mean something and let me tell you, this one does. All I could think about after reading this was that I couldn't wait to see my husband again. ;-)

The dialogue between Caden and Makenna was a big part of the story and what keeps it going for me. They were able to share some of their deepest secrets and fears with one another but could also laugh with one another. Laura does an outstanding job creating Caden and Makenna and although I wish it were longer, she ended it perfectly. I closed the book (or actually, clicked to the end on my e-reader) with a happy sigh. If you are looking for a quick read that is both passionate and emotional but also really sweet, I highly recommend Hearts in Darkness.

The description of this book pretty much gives you what the story is going to be about so instead of giving my summary of it I thought I'd just tell how much I enjoyed it..no scratch that..loved this book! I often have trouble with short stories because there is always something that throws it off for me, or it becomes really cheesey. There wasn't anything like that for me in this short story. I LOVED it from begining to end! The attraction in this book was so wonderful between the two characters and the dialog between the two was great as well. I often found myself smiling when reading this book. I just didn't want to put it down. My favorite was the ending...I'm not really spoiling anything here but just in case don't read if you're worried about that...But I loved how the ending was. Like I said before I hate the cheesey stuff, doesn't seem real to me and the ending did not have that! None of this Oh I love you after meeting you in one day...Nope none of that. It just leaves things nice and open for you to figure it out on your own.
I just can't say anymore nice things about this book. It was just wonderful to read and I look forward to reading more from this author. If she can write a short story that I loved I can only imagine how I'll love a full length novel from her!

Laura Kaye's writing style is wonderful, and her plot grabbed me immediately--I could not put down my e-reader! I highly recommend Hearts in Darkness!Hearts In Darkness

Even though this was really short I really enjoyed it, The author managed to get me to connect with the characters better than some bigger books.
I loved the whole don't judge a book by it's cover vibe.
I found myself grinning like an idiot while reading it so knew I was onto a winner.
Caden was yummy & Mackenna was a girl I'd like to have as a friend..win win:)
If you have a few hours to kill & you enjoy a bit of contemp romance then I would definitely recommend this.

This was SO GOOD! I read it in one sitting. I was hooked by the premise - the h/h are stranded in the elevator in the dark together without ever having seen each other's faces. It felt believable and intriguing and the chemistry between them was hot, hot, hot. I loved every moment!

This is the first time I'm giving a review on a book I haven't read yet. I just found this book. And just by reading what little I could. Brought me to tears. I have to buy this book. I fell in love with the characters. You brought the characters to life. I look forward to reading this book and giving a better review.

This book is perfection on paper... or liquid crystal if your reading it on your Kindle!

It's an all consuming story that you will find hard to put down. I finished it in a few hours and it's now on my all- time favorites list. Both main characters were very lovable and I quickly found myself falling in love. It's a fast read, however I found myself thinking about the characters and certain scenes for days after finishing it.

As soon as the story came to an end I had an overwhelming desire to start reading it over again right away. But I resisted... because I'm looking forward to reading this book again someday and I want to be as enthralled as I was the first time. My only complaint is this: IT WAS TOO SHORT AND I WANTED MORE!

Genre: Novella--Contemporary Romance

First Lines: "'Wait! Can you please hold that?' Makenna James huffed her frustration at her crappy day as she jogged toward the waiting elevator." A good, solid opening. We jump right into the action of the story without hesitation or unnecessary build-up. I enjoyed that.

Brownie Points: The intimacy of two people being in a dark elevator with each other and talking about things they probably couldn't say otherwise and with no preconceived notions about one another is both unique and fantastic. I absolutely loved the premise of this story. I also enjoyed the slight awkwardness between Makenna and Caden once the lights came back on--the whole story felt very realistic and believable. And the steaminess in the elevator was hot hot hot. I was so frustrated, in a good way, when the lights came back on haha.

Beefs: I had very few beefs with this story. My main wish was that I knew more about Makenna. Caden's character is very well revealed and I felt like I definitely knew him by the end of the novella, but I wanted just a little more about Makenna. However, this was nothing to deter this from being a fantastic read.

Recommendation and General Comments: Anyone who has ever had a conversation in the dark (say a car, for example) where they've been able to talk about things they wouldn't say otherwise would be able to relate to the premise of this book. This is a great read that kept me turning the pages and never lulled in pacing. I was thoroughly impressed.

This is a really great read that I would recommend to any romance reader. Hearts in Darkness appeals to a wide audience and doesn't disappoint.

Would I aspire to write like this author?
Definitely. Laura is a fantastic writer and she does a great job at creating realistic relationships between characters. I would love to work with her.

This was a great book about two strangers that fell for each other without seeing what the other really looked like. These two were there for each other and helped each other get through a bad situation. Loved Caden and Makenna.

I love Laura Kate' writing. This was a great short read. I don't usually like the shorter ones because they seem like something is missing or its choppy, but in some cases that just isn't true! I think I will be looking at elevators completely different from now on. So much passion between these two!

Absolutely loved it and could not put it down! I normally don't read while on vacation, especially at book conventions, but something about this book said, "start reading me, now" and I couldn't stop. The characters are very well fleshed out and although this is a very short book, you really get to know them. I cannot wait to get my hands on book two and see what happens next for Makenna and Caden.

He's claustrophobic and afraid of the dark so it's no cup of tea when he finds himself stuck in elevator with no power...

The subject matter that this author chose was what caught my eye. I, too, am claustrophobic and hate the dark. I just had to see how she worked those fears into a story and where she went with it. She has created a very entertaining story with it.

Caden is a loner with secrets and has no desire to get involved with people. He's not overly thrilled with being caught in an elevator and having a panic attack, but at least it's dark and she can't see him. Once he calms down, he decides that being stuck with an attractive female is about as good as it's going to get.

Makenna only saw his tattooed hand hold the elevator door for her and she's had a dreadful day already. Then the finishing touch happens; the elevator goes dark and quits working.

The author creates an interesting situation here. It's the end of the day and there's no one left in the building. How long they will be stuck is unknown. They can't see each other and don't know who they are stuck with. She builds tension between the two characters, and then defuses it with conversation.

I found it interesting that being in the elevator in dark made it almost like a confessional. They each talked easily, got into some deep issues, and became friends in a short period of time. I know danger can make people bond, and that's the premise this author used in her story.

It was almost like reading a play. The majority of the story in the elevator is like a stage set where nothing changes until the act was done. The sexual tension picks up, but the moments get broken up each time they begin to kiss. You find yourself rooting for Caden and Makenna to get together, despite their external differences.

I really enjoyed reading this story. Ms. Kaye took an impossible situation and made the most of it. I hope to read more of her work.

Although I find this book very short at barely 100 pages, you do get into the story of McKenna and heavily tattooed and pierced *sexy* Caden quickly when they meet in an elevator that's stuck. Caden has a deep fear of the dark and is clausophobic so what starts off as McKenna trying to help him cope in the elevator becomes sexual attraction. Very much like Fifty Shades with the elevator attraction. If you are a fan of Fifty Shades, like I am, you would enjoy this book.

What a sweet love story. And when you get down to the heart of it, this is what love should be about. Outside appearances are not what is important. You should fall in love with the person they are on the inside. This was a great afternoon, complete with a heavy dose sexy.

I've been anticipating this read purely on the cover. I know I probably shouldn't do that, but this is one book that didn't fail to deliver. I'm giving it a firm five stars! Seriously one of the best novella reads I've had in a while. Over half the novel takes place in a dark elevator which would normally bore me, but Makeena and Caden's witty banter and steamy word play kept me revited to the story. I'm serious folks, the dialogue in this book is fun, fast, and full of emotion.

Makeena's a fresh take on a rigid accountant and Caden's not quite your average bad boy. I love that Kaye created full characters that broke stereotypes. And when the characters finely find each other in the dark, the heat is on. I fanned myself several times.

Absolutely enjoyed this book, and I know I'll be visiting it again on occasion.

I wont sit here and give away the plot - it really irks me when people do that - but I will tell you that this little story will have you captivated from the first sentence until the end. It is a wonderful tale of love at first sight, sort of. You just have to read it to find out what I mean. I am in love with the characters and hope that Laura Kaye will bring them back for a future story. I have read it twice, and probably will read it more since I find myself missing them. Give it a read it wont disappoint.
