The world building was great (though I wish the accents were explained) and the plot was intriguing and original. I'm only taking two points off because the constant one liners and vulgar exclamations felt forced and tired after the second chapter or so, and also there were a ton of mistakes. Misspellings, wrong words (rouse instead of ruse???). I don't know if Weil has no editor or if the editor is horrible...but I hope this issue gets fixed before she publishes the sequel.

This book is totally a waste of money and time. All throughout the book was just boring and uninspiring. Their was no real spark, just some crap about souls aligning and the fact that Zane is constantly rude and just a jerk and I did not like the immediate in love puppy thoughts Piper had as soon as she saw Zane. I hated Piper and how rude she was to everyone and had no respect for anything. And finally, the action in this book was entirely terrible. It was not exciting and personally I wish the people after Piper would have just killed her and got it over it. Don't waste your time hoping for a good romance or even mild action. You will be sorely disappointed as I was.

I loved this book and I just KNOW I'm gonna love the series. Zane and Pipers interactions with each other were hilarious. Piper was so funny at times I LOL'd. She's definitely a strong heroine. Which is one of the reasons I like this book. I can't stand weak, pushover heroines. Pipers got back bone. I can't wait to see how Zane and Pipers relationship pan out. It better have a happy ending! Just saying. Yea I know the deal with Zander and it better not happen. Lol. Definitely recommend! But very disappointed that I have to wait another year for the next book. I hope I don't forget about it.

The underlying story in this series is interesting and unique. The way it is told is rather awful. The book is full of typos and obvious grammar errors. The fact that everyone except the main character seems to know what is happening is intriguing at first. However, after that is dragged out for a long, long time, it just becomes annoying. The descriptions of the feelings the main character thinks about the love interest are a bit inappropriate for a YA novel. This is a good effort, but not really worth the time or money to read.

I don't even know where to begin to describe how terrible this book is. First of all the heroine of the story is extremely rude, an utter brat and all around annoying. The premise of this book was very promising but the story got all jumbled up and a lot of things did not make sense. The main male character of the story Zane is a jerk one minute and then he's nice the other. Again extremely annoying. Let's just say that I skipped a lot of the parts of this book and I will probably not be reading the rest of the series.

The premise of White Raven with reapers, hallows and the like is good, and with some revision, I think it could be a great book. There was no reason for Rose to not tell Piper what she really was, in fact, putting it off and creating secrecy put Piper in unnecessary danger numerous times.
I find a lot of Piper's internal dialogue is empty fluff used to fill space, such as the fact her friend Zoe invites her to hang out for the 4th of July: "I had two options, I could go to the manor and watch the tv show from my empty shell of a room, or I could stay. The answer was obvious." The internal dialogue was obvious and unneeded.
There was also quite a bit of what feels like awkward writing:
"The sound of his damn laughter carried in the wind.": they were indoors.
"I swear he could read my thoughts." She knows he can read her thoughts, in fact, they can hear each other's thoughts.
I also feel like it took way too long for Piper to finally stop being so stubborn and overly snarky to Zane. I understand she's supposed to be the girl that doesn't care, and her personality is that of being the snarky girl, but Zane proved himself time and again, and she was relentless with the snark, it was constant and too much.
She made a big deal of how hard it is leaving for the summer because she had to leave her best friend, Parker whom she kind of has feelings for. And while there were a few very short interactions with them, that part of the storyline completely fizzled out.
There was one line in the book that had me laughing out loud: "Greedily I gulped air like it was an all-you-can-eat chocolate buffet, and it was that time of the month." I think that any woman completely could relate to this.
I think with some editing to tone down the snark and to take out the needless or awkward lines, this could be really good.

I loved this book, it was a different kind of paranormal story which was a good surprise. I love Piper, she is strong, feisty, sarcastic, and loyal. Then we come to the drop dead Hunter family, they are all so good looking but Zane is the one her soul cries for. I love the banter between her and Zane, sometimes there are some pretty good names being called, other times you can tell she is only 17. I love when she gets angry at him and tries to convince herself that she hates him, even her subconscious tells her "Liar, liar, pants on fire." Quickly I noticed that this wasn't a story about your traditional supernatural beings but I could not guess what they were, there were people with red hawk tattoo's, black crow tattoo's, blue sparrow's, and white raven tattoo's. I did not expect what I found out, it was a great surprise. Piper and Zane grow closer and closer much to the dislike of her grandmother and others in the community. Many are out to kill her and he is always there protecting her, teaching her how to protect herself but her grandmother and others expect her to wed another, what will she do, I know what I want her to do but sometimes duty comes before love, ugh this better not be what happens in the next book lol

Read the first book and immediately purchased the entire series the second I turned the last page. Took a day and a night to read them all. This series is INTENSE. piper and zane's chemistry is undeniable, even when they're banter is in full blown rage mode. Made me love them even more. The whole "hate to love you/love to hate you" vibe was both charming and hilarious at the same time. I don't think I've ever chuckled so much with a crazy grin during those argumentative scenes. I love pipers wit and down to Earth attitude. Don't think anyone else could have been thrown into what she did and flourished despite all the circumstances. She was perfectly molded into the most obvious choice for the white raven, despite her hesitation at leading this world she knew nothing about before stepping foot onto the island. She thrived where most would have shut down. It was incredible to read it all play out. I love pretty much everything to do with Zane. ?? Fully convinced that I will love all books created by JL Weil, I'm now finished with the first book of the Divisa series, and it definitely didn't disappoint! I'm hooked on all her writings just 3 days into reading the synopsis of white raven! It's a public service to book lovers everywhere to recommend any of her writings! I'll be spreading the word relentlessly from now on.

Piper and TJ's mother was murdered and their father sent them to stay with their long lost grandmother for the summer. When they arrive, they didn't realize she was the owner of the island and have a huge manor estate to live in. I fell in love with Zoe, Zane, Zander, & Zach!

"I didn't have much of an appetite, mostly picking at my chicken Caesar salad and gazing out at the ocean, until....
His hair was black as a wintry night, eyes icy blue as a gypsy's heart. He had a lazy saunter about him and a glint of humor twinkling in those heart-melting eyes. There was nothing loose about his body, muscles bunching as he tethered a boat to the dock. I twiddled the straw, staring brazenly. Good God. I wanted to have his babies. Not now, but most definitely someday."

Going into this, I didn't know if I would like this series since I have read the author's other two series that is published. The Divisa series reminded me of J. Armentrout's Lux series and the Luminescence series reminded me of the Twilight series. The Raven series is by far the best and more original! Very funny, full of angst, supernatural twists, and hot kissing scenes! Love it so far! First book in the trilogy and you can download the full series on kindle unlimited!

Piper’s mom had been her best friend, her world. Piper’s mother had been shot to death five blocks from home. Piper’s younger brother was T J who was fifteen to Piper’s seventeen. Their father sent Piper and T J to grandma Rose’s who they had never met. They were to stay the summer at Raven’s Hollow. Piper’s father was a mess since his wife had been murdered. Piper had to step up : she made sure they ate, had clean clothes and paid the bills or they wouldn’t have been paid and make sure T J went to school. Yet she and TJ were being sent away from all they knew. Rose’s home was a mansion and each kid had their own suite. Piper felt the house was full of secrets. Then Piper sees Zane and a jolt goes through her. But Zane seems to be a jerk to Piper.
I think this story was just a little to young for me. I did like the plot.but once again inst-love -lust-. At times during the story Piper really annoyed me the way she acted. I did like the paranormal element of this story but it just wasn’t enough. The beginning of the story was kinda slow and that threw the story off for me also.I could have used a little more explanation to the fantasy element also maybe some background on Piper’s parents.
I received an ARC of this story for an honest review.

“I will be your sword. I will be your shield. I will defend you until my last breath. This vow I swear freely, to be your weapon as long as you shall live.”

Breathtaking Series. I can't wait to get my hands on the next book.

Piper's mother was murdered. If that wasn't heartbreaking enough, now she is being sent away to live with her grandmother for the summer, back to the same place her mother vowed to never return to. While Piper tries to make an okay summer out of the situation with the handsome Zane, but thats when things start to get crazy. Zane is keeping secrets and being mysterious, it has something to do with the reason she was sent here and with her grandmother, could it even have something to do with her mother's death?

I'm already in love with this series. The characters, setting and plot are all so unique and wonderful. In the beginning I thought this was going to be another Twilight-type book but man was I wrong, its not even close.

The book is told in Piper's point of view, and I really liked her as a main character. She's sassy, caring and strong. I usually don't read other people's reviews before finishing my own, but I was really surprised by some of the ratings, and I just wanna take a minute to talk about it and defend the main character. So what these people said about her were that she's ungrateful, a spoiled little girl and that she's rude.
In the beginning of the story we are told that Piper knows nothing about her grandmother, except the fact that she's rich and her mother ran away from home. Obviously thats going to leave her being a bit suspicious and of her grandmother and not trusting her, she's not going to run up and hug her pretending everything is okay, so I understand why she's sometimes rude to her grandmother, who is basically a stranger since they've never met before. I absolutely don't understand how she's "spoiled" or ungrateful, yes she was put into a giant house with servants and all the money she could want, but she didn't ask for it, and its definitely not something she was used to since she was living in an apartment with her parents and brother.
End of rant...

The romance in this story is pretty good. If you like the romance in Throne of Glass series, or in the Lux series where the main characters make fun of each other and pretend to hate each other but secretly love one another, then this is the romance for you.
But that love triangle tho.. No matter how sick of love triangles you are, you will like this one. I'm not going to spoil it, just take my word that its different and you will definitely like it.

Based on what I read, this book is really a hit or miss with everyone, but mostly a hit. I definitely recommend giving this a try, and hopefully you love it as much as me. I can't wait to get my hands on book 2 and 3, I'm addicted.

Imagine a cryptic phone call in the middle of the night and the next thing you know, you're being shipped off to an unknown relative on an island. This is what happens to Piper and while she has every right to angry at the world, this is only the beginning. Everything she knew, everything she counted on in the past is ripped away and she's left to deal with a brand new reality. On top of everything, someone is trying to kill her. What gives? She must find the strength to embrace her new life or she'll wind up like her mother.

Fans of Twilight will love this book.

I personally loved this story. There's plenty of angst, snark, mystery and even a hunky mysterious guy. The paranormal parts of the plot were sweeping and drew me in right away. I can't wait for book two!

My Rating: 5 stars

When Piper and her brother get the call to say that their mother was murdered, they are all absolutely devastated. Piper's dad decides to send them to their Grandmother, who they don't know, in Ravens Hollow. This is the Grandmother they've never meet, the one who their own mother left so she could be with their father, the one who's rich! From the minute they arrive on the island, Piper and her brothers life changes totally! Can Piper find out the secrets of her mothers life? Why does she keep seeing the same tattoo on peoples hands? Just what is going on in this small community and why does she feel drawn to the standoffish Zane?

This took me a little while to get totally into but once I did, I really enjoyed it. It started like so many other young adult books and I was initially rolling my eyes a lot and thinking, here we go again! But then it gets interesting, and I found myself eagerly reading the next page. It's not perfect, but still worth the read.

I liked all the characters, mostly, and by mostly I mean Piper annoyed me at times. I can't pinpoint why exactly but I think it was because she was so whiny at the start. I think if a character doesn't grab you from the beginning, then it's hard to totally like them the whole way through.

The romance was.... hmmm, not sure what to call it really other than similar to thousands of other books! Girl sees hot boy, hot boy is standoffish and doesn't want anything to do with her, yet is somehow drawn to her, girl keeps thinking of him and both end up together, yawn!! I wanted something more from it but sadly, it was just OK.

The plot was what saved the book for me. I loved the history and mythology behind the book. I loved finding out about the White Ravens and can't wait to find out about the Reaper war. It was fast paced enough and mostly held my attention throughout. I will definitely read the next one to see what happens, though I do hope a lot of the cliche is gone!!!

Caitlin Kelly was really good. It's my first book narrated by her and I enjoyed it. She had the right tones for the right times and gave each character their own. I will have to see if there is anything else by her that I'd like to listen to!

This was written really well. The plot was different and original. I say original I have yet find anything else like it. I had a great time reading this novel. It was entertaining and captivating. I read the description and immediately jumped on this one. Piper was a feisty and hilarious. She has flaws and weakness. Which makes her very relate able as a character to a reader and reviewer. Even When she was down in the gutter, she preserves through the many secrets and attempts on her life. However, I do want to slap Piper sometimes for her stupidity. Zane was the hot-brooding male of a hero. He was a hero even though it may not seem that way. I do want there was intrigue, magic, mystery, and Hot Guys/Brothers! I look forward diving back into this world again with the next book in the series.

Note: In exchange for an unbiased review, the author, publisher, and/or narrator were kind enough to provide an audio version of this book at no charge via AudiobookBlast.

Oh lord ... where to begin?

OK, I'll start with the positives to help take the edge off.

First off - the narrator: she did an excellent job on the characters and the overall narration. Her voice was crisp, clear, expressive, and very pleasant-sounding. As a narrator myself, I appreciated her work on this book.

Secondly - the premise of this story was different and interesting. I liked the concept about Reapers and Banshees, etc.

Third - the writing style was good; no real issues there.

Now on to the things that bothered me to the point that I had to knock the overall rating down quite a bit.

It started off well enough, but about halfway through, the verbal and physical abuse dished out by the female protagonist was a huge turn-off. It's NOT cool or funny to continually call someone vulgar names, threaten bodily violence, and commit actual physical assault - even IF the character on the receiving end is the hunky love interest of said abuser. Imagine if the roles were reversed and the male character threatened to stab the girl or knee her in the privates or actually carry out acts such as biting, punching, poking, etc. It's disgusting and there's nothing okay about depicting such behavior as somehow acceptable or even desirable in a "romance" novel - especially a YA one, where kids are basically being taught that it's perfectly fine for a female to be abusive. Huge thumbs down for that. Not only is it uncool, but it also makes the main protagonist a hugely unlikable character. Which isn't the type of reaction that would generate interest in continuing with the series.

Other things that started to get under my skin was that it seemed the author would forget what the protagonist had said or felt at earlier points in the novel. For example, in once scene, she is treated to a yummy breakfast of pancakes, bacon, and coffee at the mansion where she lives with her grandmother and brother. She mentions in her thoughts that it has been a long time since she'd eaten food that she hadn't cooked herself. Then, several scenes later, she's eating with the family of her love interest and she mentions in her thoughts that it had been a long time since she'd had a "home cooked meal"/one that she hadn't cooked herself. Uh ... excuse me? Did the author forget about the earlier scene where she had a meal cooked for her at her grandmother's place? And then there was the mention at one point in the novel that she'd never really had a boyfriend/dated - and not long after that, she talked about how she hadn't had/experienced anything like she did with the male love interest. Well, if she'd never had a boyfriend or dated before, then of course she wouldn't have had anyone like him before because ... she'd never had anyone at all before. And then, the character notes how much better shape her grandmother is in compared to her (or something like that) - and yet this same out-of-shape girl is somehow able to overpower a strong reaper who tries to kill her? And along the lines of that particular scene, this reaper (who's supposed to be very hard to kill), somehow instantly dies when the protagonist pushes her off and the hits her head on something? If reapers are so hard to kill, then a knock on the head shouldn't have killed her (and the protagonist shouldn't have been able to even overpower her - mind you, this scene was before the protagonist's powers had been brought to life). Oh goodness, there were SO many examples of this type of thing that I lost track of them all. I was listening to this on a long road trip; if I hadn't been driving, I would have started writing it down every time this sort of inconsistency popped up. I happened a LOT. There were many more besides these examples.

Another issue was that this book was entirely too long, given the very short amount of time that was actually devoted to the supernatural/mystery element. It was primarily a romance, and one that was built on contrived, predictable encounters and anger/arguments/repeated over-reactions by the protagonist that made my eyeballs about roll out of my head by the time the whole thing was over.

The complaints listed here are by no means everything I had an issue with, these are the things that came to mind first. If I could remember them all, I'd write about them.

I suppose fans of books like "Twilight" (ugh) would find this an acceptable piece of work. But I am unable to view it that way.

This is by far my favorite story that author J.L. Weil has written to date. This story is fascinating and leaves you begging for more. I want the next book on audio now please. I also know what I really want to happen in the second story and its a MUST, Piper and Zane Hunter need to be together asap, please. I think I'm not the only person wanting this to happen. Honestly, I don't see the big deal, Piper and Zane just need to go together and tell Zane's dad that they won't take NO for an answer and they want to be together and no matter what he wants, they want to be together, easy peasy and its done. J.L. Weil has blown my mind with this story. This is such a great story and its written to perfection. She's an amazing author and it shows in this story. This is one of those stories that you just can't put down, if listening you can't stop the story and that shows alot. Weil has created a story that is intriguing, unique, a killer plot, plenty of action, twists and turns throughout, alot of mystery, clean romance, and a much needed, different race of supernatural beings. In my opinion for this genre, it is the best book of 2015. I'm not going to give this story away, I kinda hate when a review does thst. I'll just say this is a MUST read or listen, whichever you prefer but you really have to check this story out and have your mind blown away.
Caitlin Kelly is a new name to me in the narrator world and I know plenty. This is the first time I've listened to anything by Caitlin but she didn't disappoint at all. I thought her performance of White Raven was fantastic. I felt as if I could hear and feel every emotion as I listened to her tell the story. I found it easy to recognize each character throughout the story. I'll definitely be looking for more stories that this narrator has done. Overall, a perfect 5 ? rating.

When 17 year old Piper losses her mother to a horrible tragedy, her elusive grandmother, whom she’s never met, requests the summer with her and her little brother TJ on an island off the New England coast. But when Piper and TJ arrive, they never could have prepared themselves for the huge and elaborate home that their grandmother lives in. With Piper’s standoffish attitude and feelings for her grandmother, she keeps to herself and tries not to enjoy the lavish lifestyle, still in mourning over the loss of her mother and best-friend. While in her shell of solitude, Piper wanders around the coastal town and meets Zoe, who is bubbly and outgoing. She invites Piper to a bonfire, where she proceeds to meet Zoe’s three brothers, Zack – Zoe’s twin brother, Zander – the oldest Hunter sibling, and Zane – dark, brooding, and a complete jerk toward Piper. But of course Piper feels a strange pull toward Zane and his obnoxious attitude, even though she knows she shouldn’t want to be talk to him…or see him…or dream of him.

When Piper starts feeling like she is being watched and Zane keeps popping in out of nowhere to intervene when she faces anything/one threatening, she begins to look for answers as to why people call her grandmother The White Raven, why Zane keeps calling her Princess, and why he and others have seemingly “invisible” tattoos that she can see, but others can’t...and why everyone keeps referring to her as a “Raven”. With the on again, off again sparks she feels from Zane, when the eldest Hunter, Zander asks her out, she gladly accepts – he is literally just the tall, dark, and handsome to give her a little fun, but then Zane shows up and puts Piper’s life into a real tail spin. And when he delivers the news that his father is THE Grim Reaper - that he is the son of death – and Piper is from the long line of powerful reapers known as banshee or a White Raven. Zane tells her that she has the power to take a soul with one touch. As her fascination with Zane grows, so does the danger she is in, as well as the information that she finally learns about her heritage – that her grandmother has an enormous amount of power, her mother didn’t want the reaper life for her (which is why she left Raven Hallow when she was pregnant with Piper), and that Piper is now next in line to be THE White Raven, “Queen” of all the reapers. And not only that, but Piper also finds out that she is betrothed to Zander to unite the two most powerful families…falling for Zane shouldn’t have been a part of the deal. But with danger waiting around every corner, Zane Hunter’s lips looking more kissable by the minute, and her impending marriage to the other Hunter brother – Piper’s life is about to get more complicated than she could ever imagine.

Let me start of by saying I. LOVED. THIS. BOOK!! I thought that Piper’s character was well developed, she knew how to stand on her own two feet, but was still willing to trust and rely on others. She was strong, funny, and even without knowing it, completely kickass! Which leads me to Zane…hmm, how to describe him with his hard abs, kissable lips, and dark hair (ha!) – Piper gives us some pretty good imagery throughout as she falls hopelessly in love with him. I thought that their banter was amazing, and even though their journey is far from over, it’s apparent that they are a team, bound by their souls in an amazing ride of love, life, death and all those things encompass. Great series so far – can’t wait to see more butt kicking and lip locking for Piper and Zane!

After Piper’s mother passes away her father decides to send her to the island of Raven Hollow to live with the grandmother she’s never really known. Piper is rebellious and bored being in a place that her mother ran from years ago and never looked back. That is until she meets Zane Hunter and finds herself fascinated with the gorgeous dark-haired bad boy. Piper soon realizes there is something not quite human about Zane and something a bit off about all of Raven Hollow.

White Raven is a book that I really should have loved but found myself quickly annoyed with the main character and just couldn’t connect to the story from there on. I tried my best to enjoy the rest of the story line but in the end I also found myself wanting more out of the overall plot and a bit underwhelmed in the end.

Piper is meant to be a rebellious teen with a spunky attitude that should come off as independent and strong. Instead for me I found her to be more of a whiny, self entitled brat if anything. Also, I would have liked to see any sort of sadness when she had just lost her mother, her actions to me seemed a bit heartless to be so cocky and arrogant instead. It just got to the point that I saw her as very childish which ruined the tone of the read for me.

As far as the plot though, I thought that I was going to enjoy a bit of it but it just seemed a very slow pace read that never jumped out at me and got exciting. There’s a few moments here and there with a bit of action but it took to the halfway point to get a partial reveal as to what type of supernatural story line the book is about and then another 25% to get the rest of the reveal so the story is over before much even happened.

Overall, not for me I’m afraid. The writing is fine and I’m sure some will love the book but I just didn’t connect with this one.

Full Review:

White Raven is the debut novel in the up and coming Raven Series by J.L. Weil. One thing I truly appreciate when reading is an author that can take something completely ridiculous and transform it into something awesome. J.L. Weil is one such author and I am really psyched that I found this book.

The description given with the book doesn’t give much away in the sense of what type of different we should be prepared for when meeting Piper, the narrator and main character. The characters in the story keep her in the dark as to who she is for a while as well and it got me completely hooked. No one would explain anything to her about what was going on and it pissed me off, which was great because it made me feel for her. The world building was detailed and allows you imagine what you’re reading.

Piper and Zane are well developed, their chemistry and tension are great. I really dig the love-hate type of romances especially when they are not over done. This one was chef’s preference for sure. Other characters in the story are not as well built but it didn’t really take away from the over-all enjoyment factor. Piper is feisty and made me laugh but she is not as BA as I would have liked. However, judging by the events near the end, that may be pretty quickly remedied with the next one.

One thing I felt could be improved is the amount of time spent focusing on the relationship between Piper and her grandmother. There isn’t a whole lot of interaction or back story on their history or the reasons for it. I also would have liked to have had a little more explanation and back story when it comes to who and what Piper and Zane are. But overall, I really was quite taken with the experience this novel provides. It leans harder on the fantasy side of things than my typical go to YA books but I can appreciate something where the characters are different. There is a cliffhanger, but no need to worry, I will be painfully waiting along with you for the next one. I would explain more but I don’t want to give anything away. You’ll just have to read it yourself.

I adored this book. Honestly, the character reminded me of myself to the point of saying things I would say. Lol. I thought this book was very well paced and the character building was amazing. I liked how even though she wasn't a fan of "girl" friends, she managed to make a few anyway, well, one anyways. I liked how the reapers and death weren't your typical "black hooded cloak with a crazy looking scythe". The fact that death had a sense of humor was just awesome to me. But of course, there is the insta-love... Which I'm not knocking, I'm just wishing it weren't predictable. For once I kinda wish the girl wouldn't go for the "bad boy".... and I kinda wish she would have went with who she was SUPPOSE to be with. He is so adorable! Ugh I just love him! Anywho, I wish we could have known more about a few characters like Rose and her mama. And to be honest, I actually am curious to know more about her brother for the fact, he might be younger and a "gamer" but that doesn't make him blind. As a brother, I'm sure he is still protective over his sister and was wondering where she was going all the time. What did he think about all the crazy things going on, ya know?
A few things I had trouble with ... well, not really trouble, it just made me think "that's not possible" is when they were talking about Banshees and Reapers. They made it seem like Piper was both... Which isn't possible, considering Reapers reap the souls while a Banshees cry warns of an impending death. I could be missing something here or she could just be making her own kind of Banshee.
Also at one point, I really thought it said the twins were five minutes apart, but later it says four? I'd I'm wrong, someone, please tell me.
Over all, I adored this book and can not wait to get my hands on book two! I need it. NOW!

This book was a good read. I was drawn in by it. The plot was decent although I felt I could only rate it for 3 stars. My reasons and complaints are thus -

The age old ruse of the main character not knowing what they were or the history of their heritage and dragging it along for most of the book. This is overused by too many authors these days.

It took forever to enlighten the readers and main character of the secret about Piper and it was frustrating. On countless occasions it seemed we, and Piper, were on the brink of discovering what was being covered up only to be let down. It made Piper come across as a doormat. Especially after she blustered about how she was going to get to the bottom of what was being kept from her and then did not have the courage to demand answers when she was supposedly a rebel who did not like to be contained.

Also, when Piper and Zane had their showdown with the hallows on the beach, how was it that no other reapers went to help? I expected the other Hunters' or those allied with them would have assisted. After all, their main priority was supposed to have been keeping Piper alive. It was a small island so it seemed unlikely that no one else knew there was a fight going on down at the shore and would not have joined in to help keep Piper safe.

The author could use new beta readers since their were several accounts of grammatical errors ranging from misspelled words to confusing sentences to puncuation mistakes throughout the book.

That having been said, I am looking forward to reading the second installment.

I finished this book in exactly three days. It was a sassy, full of spunk paranormal romance story. It didn't have anything that stuck out writing wise that pulled me out of the book's story. There were only a few things I would have liked to see differently in the book which I'll explain below. But first off I really liked to see a main character full of such angst and fiery honesty. It's nice to see a girl that will say what's on her mind, but also have insecurities that people can relate to. Overall 4.5 wing review.

This story does contain strong language including the word bitch, and the use of the bird. But, it didn't feel too jarring for me most of the time, it wasn't so much that I was put off from the story.

One thing that caught my mind in this story, and the reason why I didn't give it a full five-wing review was that there were too many shallow instances of man he's sexy, and what I would want him to do to me, and that if it weren't for this I would totally have sex with this character type of scenarios. Not that it is a bad thing for the book, it wasn't done poorly, and there is no actual sexual content in book one other than heavy kissing, but I just wish more stories didn't put so much peer pressure for females to have sex.

The murder of Piper’s mother is still a very recent, fresh scar for the three family members left behind. Piper’s father, in an attempt to work through his own pain and to restore some sense of normality to his children’s lives, sends Piper and her brother to the island of Raven Hallow to spend the Summer with their estranged grandmother.

At first, Piper is furious. How dare her father dump the two of them with a grandmother she’s never even met? Then she meets blue-eyed Zane Hunter. The attraction is mutual and instantaneous. But there’s more to Zane than meets the eye. As Piper strives to uncover the truth about Zane, she discovers that there are more than a few family secrets hiding in her own closet - secrets that could kill her.

The fantasy world of Raven Hallow is intriguing, although I’m still unsure exactly how the powers and hierarchy works. Some of the fantasy elements could have done with more explanation. The characters were also mildly interesting, but I found them hard to pin down. Piper and Zane both came across as inconsistent and lacking motivation, and I struggled to find the developmental arc. Rose’s character was a pivotal one in the story, but I felt she was side-lined and many of her actions didn’t make sense when it came to Piper. It was entertaining, but not gripping enough for me to continue the series.

I did not enjoy the Audible narration but the cover is stunning!

Honestly, I might have given this book a higher rating if I'd liked Zane even a little bit, but... I really didn't like him. Maybe it's because I'm tired of the supernatural trope of the bad boy who should stay away but doesn't. I don't really know, but I just... didn't like him, and I couldn't see why Piper was attracted to him - at all. The fact that her father allows her and her brother to just up and stay with the grandmother they haven't seen in years and her recently-deceased mother didn't get along with is a little worrisome too. Just because he's mourning and can't really pay attention to them? There was just a lot of worrisome things going on. And what is it with adults hiding things from teenagers old enough to handle the truth that may... I don't know... get them killed?!?

I enjoyed this book very much. I loved Zane a lot, although he was sort of like your typical bad boy, he had a little bit of a different flavor. I think it could have been because he was the only one who wanted to tell Piper the truth, versus the normal not wanting to tell the main character the truth. I didn’t like how Piper freaked out about everything, yet was obsessed with the show Supernatural. I think if she liked watching the show, then she would be more open to the possibility. That could just be me.

I thought the entire idea of having different reapers was a lot of fun. I want to learn more about this world and how it works, however I have to wait for the next book. Although not everything was answered, I think enough was answered where the story felt complete, and just left the rest for the next book to answer.

A couple of problems I had were that it was a bit slow starting out. We didn’t find the truth of anything until 80% through the book and a lot of the beginning seemed to be repeated, her getting into trouble, not knowing why, questioning everything, and then again that happened. I wished it was a bit faster.

All in all I give it a 4/5, being a great story that sucked me in, but a little bit slow. Definitely will be getting the second book!

This book was phenomenally good! I loved this book so much that I went and bought the next two books in the series!

Something mysterious happens when Piper is sent away to her Grandmothers house. She is thrown into a world of paranormal beings that she never wanted to be a part of, and yet she also wishes she wasn't left in the dark her whole life.

I thought this book had great character, and world building, but also great relationship building which made the romance in this book so much more fun to read. This book was completely unpredictable adding so much more excitement too. If I had to recommend this book to others I would recommend it to young adult and adult readers that love an exciting young adult read.

I felt like I became a part of this book, and this story really holds a place in my heart big enough to put it on my favorites shelf. This book was something completely different and way more impressive than I was expecting making me love the book so much more.

Received a copy from Netgalley for an honest review. Thank you, Netgalley!

This is more like 2.5 stars. Overall this book was a quick read and had enjoyable moments but not exactly original.

The fact that the story centers around grim reaper families, specifically the white ravens and black crows, is a little different. I wanted to know more about the black crows, specifically THE grim reaper- how he came to be the grim reaper, why he and Rose did not decide to fight to be together, etc... I also wanted to know more about the other factions too.

That being said- the whole veiny eye thing totally done in vampire diaries for how many seasons- 6 or 7. Granted, the author makes reference to this so at least they know it wasn't original. Then more unoriginal and even bigger as it is kinda the premise of why the reapers are around, is the whole reaper vs hallow thing. This was done in Bleach for 78 manga volumes (that include somewhere around 600 or so chapters) and 366 anime episodes. In Bleach they are called hollows but it's the same thing- spirits on earth with lots of negative energy turn to hollows and create chaos/destruction on earth. Only the reapers can get rid of them. I understand imitation is a form of flattery but this is a series being developed based on the premise of another hugely popular and successful series!! A little originality would be appreciated. Especially because it seems the author may know something about anime-Piper is into it- unless that's just a ruse and the author knows nothing. Even so, it's easy enough to google.

Not sure how I feel about Piper- she's your typical snarky, rebellious teenager you find in these stories. Throughout the story she kept mentioning how concerned she was for her brother, but he always seemed like an afterthought when he did make an appearance. If she was so concerned, why not take him out to meet people and let him socialize?? Instead it's acceptable for him to sit in his room all day. She doesn't visit him or anything- he always comes looking for her.

At least her mom's unexpected death did have a big impact on her- she dreams about it and thinks about it. This is what would happen in the real world. At least that aspect was believable.

As for Zane, I was interested to know why he is like the back sheep of his family? If he's the scythe then what are his siblings? I want to know more of his backstory.

I get the tension between her and Zane. It's not insta-love at least, attraction yes, and they do hang out and develop a relationship. However, this arranged marriage with Zander is really not needed. It does nothing to move the story along and it seems as though it is thrown in there just for an obligatory love triangle. They keep saying if Zander finds out Piper and Zane have kissed he'll be mad. But why?? It's not like his and Piper's relationship ever really developed. Is he going to be mad because of some arranged marriage and they aren't even married yet??!! It's obvious Zander left the one he really has feelings for because of Piper and the arrangement. So why be mad she's hooking up with Zane? He could just hook up with the one he feels for.

What this book has going for it- the reaper angle (it just should be different than the Bleach one), how Piper's mom's death affected her, Zane. What it doesn't have going for it- the whole premise of the reapers is unoriginal, not much was resolved by the end of the book, the forced love triangle.

This is a promising first book in a trilogy – full of secrets and intrigue, splashed with humor, teenage angst and sarcasm with danger and love. The pros: a well thought out plot and the supernaturals are interesting, with some really good action sequences. The cons: almost too much angst and whining from our main character, Piper, who acted overly childish for most of the first half of the book. The storyline was also a bit slow getting to the point, and a bit slow for the main character to catch on.

All that said, it was a fun read and I’ll definitely look for book two. The full trilogy is out now, so if you get hooked, you won’t be delayed in reading.Reviewed by Cyrene

pooled ink Reviews:

First thoughts: Daaaaang, this girl has got attitude for days. And oh ho ho I was right! From start to finish Piper is armed and trigger-happy with her quips and bullets of sarcasm. No one is exempt from her rebellious tongue. Also, I feel like she used every idiom in America. She had those whipping out of her mouth or thoughts every other minute.

I blew through this book in mere hours, which was a pleasant surprise considering I didn’t look up much about this book before taking the leap. Is this book Tolkien or Shakespeare? No, but it never claimed to be and that doesn’t mean it wasn’t captivating in its own way. If you’re looking for a delicious paranormal romance to dissolve into then this book would be a good choice.

WHITE RAVEN unravels and twists a world full of Death and romance as Piper discovers the secrets her mother died trying to bury. A hierarchy is being challenged, forbidden love tears at young hearts, and powers are suddenly awakening in full force. Dripping with sarcasm, burning with passion, and tense with an oncoming battle WHITE RAVEN invites you innocently upon its shores just to trap you inside its pages holding you yearning for the conclusion.

This book...where do I begin? It had me on the edge of my seat, biting my nails, flipping the pages as fast as possible, then it ended. I want more. So much more.

Piper was sent to spend the summer with her grandmother. A grandmother she didn't know. One who lived in a huge house in a town that was very mysterious. When Piper arrived, everyone knew who she was, including the Hunter family.

Zane Hunter was gorgeous and also someone Piper didn't want to like. He was abrasive and didn't want anything to do with her. Yet, when they were together, she felt connected to him. More connected than she had ever felt to another person. The strange town she was in, the strange people she met, things she saw that she couldn't believe, it was all real and Piper was now part of a world she never knew existed.

What a great read! I loved Piper. She was spunky and snarky. She didn't take anything from anyone. Zane was perfect. I loved him and his family. I was completely immersed in this book and didn't want it to end. When it did, I kept tying to flip the pages for more. I can't wait to read what happens in book two.

Book received in exchange for an honest review. Reviewed on behalf of Once Upon An Alpha.

The White Raven by J.L. Weil is an exciting YA paranormal with a young plucky heroine, Piper, whose mother was recently murdered and an old fashioned hot alpha-male bad-boy, Zane, who makes it his job to protect the heroine from the same forces that killed her mother. The angst and sexual tension between the two main characters was very realistic. The hero reminded me a lot of the hero in Meg Cabot's Abandon series, which is a reimagining of the Hades/Persephone myth. In the Abandoned series, the hero is the keeper of the underworld. In the White Raven Zane is the son of the Grim-Reaper who helps souls cross over into the after life.

I absolutely loved the premise of this book, which is not that unique: one group trying to destroy a much smaller group so they can possess all of the power held by the smaller group. What is unique though is that three different communities live in Raven Hallow and each one has superhuman powers with characteristics similar to certain bird species. I especially appreciated the thought that two souls can reach out to each other and be synchronized, especially across different "breeds."

What I didn't like was how foul-mouthed Piper was, especially when she is verbally sparring with our hero. I've never heard a teenager or an adult swear that much and I have two teen daughters myself, and chaperoned many buses full of bandies on several road trips over the past six years, including one very long trip to Disney. Don't get me wrong, a little swearing here and there is to be expected, but Piper's vocabulary is 50% bad words with another 25% of nothing but negativity. Her character would be much more believable and likable if her language were toned down.

I listened to the Audible version of this story narrated by Caitlin Kelly. She had great intonation and pace, including differing voices for male and female characters as appropriate. Her portrayal of Zane is swoon-worthy! Her narration certainly contributed to my enjoyment of this book and the overall rating reflects it. I received a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest unbiased review.

Piper and her family are devastated when her mother was murdered. She was her best friend and the best mother one could ask for. Her father, stricken with grief, sends her and her little brother to an island her rich grandmother owns. The grandmother she only saw in pictures before. The one her mother left to be with her father.

Arriving at Raven Hallow, her life changes as she never would thought it would. Tons of luxuries she never would have dreamt of at home. Furthermore, everybody seems to know her and of her arrival. She meets Zane, the mysterious and gorgeous guy who seems to hide many things. The island is definitely hiding some secrets and Piper is determined to find out the truth.

I couldn’t get into the story at first, because I thought Piper complained too much and all the time. As it went on, it got more and more interesting and fascinating and I found myself liking the main character. I really wanted her to be with Zane and thought they made a great couple. He really is the one for her. The author introduced a new race of paranormal creatures. I was trying to guess what the people of the island really were for a long time, and I was really surprised when I finally learned the truth. The ending left me wanting more and I’m definitely excited to know what happens next in the series. Fans of YA paranormal romance should absolutely get this!

The narration contributed to my enjoyment of this book. I could clearly picture the main character in my head and her voice was comfortable to listen to. I also really liked how Caitlin Kelly impersonated the main character's romantic interest, Zane.

It was so difficult to read as the main character was just horrible. Teenager with a lot of angst trying to be “badass”. Also, evrytime I turn a page I’m hoping for some kind of explanation or understanding but more and more questions were left unanswered. A lot of people liked it and that got me excited to read the book but I cannot even finish reading it. So sad it was a waste of time. It had a lot of potential.

I really enjoyed this story. I love the world that J.L. Weil had created. I'm so glad I'm finally reading this series, better late than never.

I love me some Zane, he is gorgeous, protective and so much more than meets the eyes. Their back and forth banter and their love and hate relationship is what kept me reading. Every time they were together they were electric. I want them to be together so bad, but I know it will take some time before they finally get their happy ending. I can't wait to read the rest of the books. Loved it.

This was a great Y/A read (except for the swear language), there was a bit more angst between the Hero/heroine then I care for in books. At certain points, I could relate to the emotional whiplash Piper was getting from Zane. I think it could have been a better read with slightly less whiplash. The world building was good, the flow was good, the types of paranormal was one I hadn't read before. I think toning down Zane's love/hate emotions a bit would have made this a better read for me. Was still a great read though & I will be looking at getting the remaining books in the series. I'm hoping some of the questions that were left unanswered will be answered in the remaining books.

This is just another ok YA book. Piper is the young female protagonist that develops these "paranormal" reeper powers and what do you know, she is supposed to be the best of the best, but since she was sheltered all of her life, she knows nothing about it. The story drags and drags until finally someone lets her in on the secret. Seriously, full of just filler words/scenes without any action.

I really loved this book, it was not somrthing that I had expected and was exactly what I needed!
Piper is relatable yet super snarky and not into taking anyones crap, seeing her whole world change as she and her brother move in with there very interesting grandmother. The island has a lot to teach Piper and a lot of secrets

I LOVE the Hunters and they give such a great contrast to Piper but the relationships she builds with them is great love Zane!

The way the world is explored and you get a hint of what mmore there is to come

J.L. Well has a boundless imagination and is a natural storyteller. Of course, that can be said of most authors, indie or mainstream.

What makes Weil's work different from that of many imaginative storytellers is that she also knows her craft, growing in mastery with every tale she weaves. Moreover, she understands that more is needed and so utilizes good copyeditors as well, as poor developmental or copyediting can seriously diminish the impact of even a great story.

As always, a novel well worth buying and immersing yourself in.

I gave this book 5 stars because i absolutely loved it. There was drama, suspense, mystery, and love all wrapped up in the story. I love how there was an instant connection between Zane and Piper but that connection was fought against every step of the way between the two. I like the mystery of Piper finding out she isn't human. This book was hard to put down. I was constantly wondering what was going to happen. The story was easy to follow and kept my interest every step of the way.

After the death of her mother Piper moves to an island. Unknowingly, her grandmother owns by the island, and she has a huge target on her back. She has a difficult time to feel at home here. Her grandmother is keeping secrets from her and the one man she absolutely has to have can't share one nice word with her. She's anything but boring and such a fighter. But will that help her against being promised to one she doesn't love and the forces trying to take her birth right?

This book left me craving for the next installment. I have to see Piper get Zane. It is a great read. But I would only give it 4.5 stars due to some minor things. I would have liked to see a more distinct climax to the story. they all felt like small hills in the story. However in the authors defense I do think she was trying to set up the foundation for the series. And what a foundation it is. So many things I am curious to see what happens. The pace was constant. The romance was leaving me drooling, and wanting more every time. More then a few times did the bantering make me laugh out loud. The mystery took me for a loop. Her I was sitting thinking I was reading another shifter book... I couldn't be more wrong. It's goes deeper then that, Way deeper. The cover is beautiful.

Some descriptions of scenes, locations and actions are sometime dis-jointed and appear to editing mistakes. Ex. One moment two characters are speaking in a drive way under a tree, the next, one of them is standing up from sitting on a car with nothing indicated where said car was or how the characters got to or on the car. However the story keeps things moving so much that you can figure it out or just forgive the bad edits. On to book 2.

The story line is really good and the descriptions of the characters and the settings are easy to follow. Parts of the slang were a bit annoying. This book has a great concept but honestly the execution was lacking for me. The main character was annoying, the instant attraction to Zane was also something I couldn't get on board with. Overall I found myself rooting against Zane and Piper getting together if only so I wouldn't have to hear how "hot" they each thought the other is. Towards the end I found myself skimming the book just so I could get it over with and end !y misery. Will definitely not be continuing on.

Not bad. My biggest negative was there were just too many unanswered questions. It seemed that as soon as Piper is about to get some answers, she gets distracted by something else, then forgets what she wants to know. I also found her to be to forgiving in certain situations.

Under here, somewhere. It's covered up, like a cashmere sweater under a pile of acrylic. It needs an editor. This would have been vastly improved if it was trimmed by 1/3. It's quite vague and drags on. The slang is terrible. It's a terrible idea. Shake your tailfeather? Sometimes it read like a 35 year old pretending to be an 80 year old, pretending to be 17. The author can do better.

The author was awesome in writing and describing the connection between Zane and Piper - it definitely could be felt!

What I didn't seem to like is the continual "digs" between the two... maybe because I am an older reader and not a young adult.

This is a favorite author of mine so I couldn't wait to start this new series. Piper is one angry teen that travels to an island with some weird things happening. The only way I can describe this book is spunky. It as so hard to put the book down and actually get things done. The plot isn't really like any paranormal young adult book I have read. It has attitude, and hooked my interests from the beginning. The character development was amazing. The main character had depth, Piper was not just sassy but emotional and grieving her mothers death. She was bratty and spunky. The author did an amazing job. She also did great with character development, not only with the love interest Zane, but side characters. I'm starter the second book in the series, Black Raven immediately!

Yeah, couldn’t finish. So immature. Rude characters. Too much things unexplainable. Her father sent her and her brother to live with their grandma that they never even met. A grandma that their own mother ran away from?? See any red flags here?? Oh, and their mother was killed and the grandma doesn’t seemed very concerned with her safety not even to tell her what she is. This one needs a lot of work really.

Too many questions unanswered not enough info. She lets too much slide. And I really didn’t like the main characters.

The author basically plagiarized the plot of twilight...like all four in one novel...and didn't do it nearly as well as she could have. I think what resonated the most as not believable was the main character's inner dialogue about her love interest, Zane. She sounded like an idiot, and not nearly as strong as the rest of her character insisted that she behave. I wanted to love this...but I just couldn't get around the main character, who was supposed to be so strong, simpering and falling apart all because of a guy. What a waste of time.

2 stars. there's A LOT of "teen speak," almost to the point where i didn't really care about our heroine bc she's mean and whiny. plus she talks a big game and is always reminding the reader of what a 'rebel' she is. the best thing about the book is that the author hired someone to do a cute cover to sucker people into reading it.

It took me longer then normal to get through the first couple of chapters, but once I did the story picked right up and I couldn't put the book down. I loved how the book was a lot different than other supernatural books. By the time I got to the end I couldn't wait to read the next one!

I generally finish books even if I don't really like them and I never leave a review, but this one I had to stop reading. It was oh, so painful. If you have read Twilight, you have pretty much read this.
