This book draws you in and is not predictable, even in those moments in which you think it might be. Great plot, incredible character development. It has been hard to find this caliber of story and writing in a long time. Cannot wait to read the next one!

This was a fun read, or rather a listen, as I've listened the to the audiobook. I was very intrigued with the concept of dragons, and smaller dragonettes. I thought it was very clever, and the bickering humor between characters was excellent as well. The narrator did a fantastic job, and the author did a great job creating a world, plot, characters, and emotional attachments. The end was sad, complete, and leaves you wanting more. I look forward to checking out the next book!

I chose to rate this book with five stars. Its story is lovingly crafted in words which fit together as well as the scales of dragons. And together they weave a tapestry of a world of magic, Dragon fire, and men. Beautiful.
I would recommend this book to readers of 12 and older, right up to when you grow tired of Dragon tales. (For me, at 63, that means never.)
Dragonfriend's editing and writing to me are as a Dragon's hoard; shiny, varied, lovely, and treasured.

This story is written very well. It had a lot of words I had to look up definitions for just because they aren't used often in stories I usually read. The adventure was good, the characters were well developed and the author makes sure you are drawn in enough to feel. I have extremely mixed feelings about some of the plot lines, but I'll be checking out the next book in spite of that. I'd recommend picking up this one but if you're an emotional reader keep tissue handy.

Lia lives in a time of dragons and magic. She is the adopted daughter of a king, whose kingdom is overthrown. This is her adventure, being saved by a dragonette and taught the Dragon language. Becoming a warrior, saving a ferol dragon, and her adopted family. An awesome adventure and wonderful read !!

This world of islands is full of magic. I was so wrapped up in the relationship between the three main characters that I was shocked by the turn of events and had tears running down my face. So much romance, sadness, joy and terror in an absolutely awesome book. I can't wait to read the next one.

This book is a beautifully written, masterfully developed Dragon gem. I literally could not put it down. Marc has a wonderful character and plot development skill. The characters are bright, funny, unique, and endearing.

Buy this book for yourself and each one in your family. A beautiful Christmas present. I guarantee you will get the next in the series before you even finish this one.

This started out so slow... kind of like a child's serving of ice milk. I almost gave up on it thinking it was too YA for mature readers. Then I realized it was more like gourmet ice cream. No, a sundae. Wait... triple hot fudge. Whipping cream. Salted nuts. And a really big cherry on top.

Thank you so much for offering this as a true Kindle Unlimited series! I hope so many people read the series that you still make a boatload of money.

This is an amazing story. I was entertained every step of the way. Marc Secchia is an excellent storyteller. I really liked how humor was weaved in throughout the story. This is definitely an original and new realm with different characters, both people and Dragons, and I was unable to put it down until I finished it. I'm going to go get the next book in this series right now!

This story, like the others in the group written by Mac Secchia, focus on relationships and learning experiences that are like the real world. They have to learn to get along with all kinds and work side by side. Also the stories are not littered with profanity and sexual overtones. It is refreshing to read fiction that uses everyday language and not gutter talk.

I pick up a book by Marc Secchia and I know from the start that I am going to get my money's worth. Without waxing lyrical, he is one of the best fantasy writers around and never fails to impress. The adventure is always big, but the thing I like most his is constant ability to breathe life into his characters. In just two words - Absolutely Brilliant! Thank you for the great reads Marc.

This is a true arming the hero tale. Except that there are three heroes. One is a heroine, one a dragon, and one a dragonet. The settings are carefully drawn. The challenge of dealing with unappreciative parents is a task our heroine (and the author) must manage with skills, courage and a caring heart.

To be honest, I didn't love this book at the very beginning. I thought that the wording was awkward and contrived. I'm happy that I stuck with it. The writing started to flow and I found myself hooked. Any spare moment that I had was spent reading. This is an incredible and original story. The absolute best fantasy book I've read all year

I loved the dragons and as an aminal lover myself, I really enjoyed the relationships between humans and dragons. I think this would make a great movie, along the lines of Tolkien ... or Avatar. But for me I found the book had too much description of fight scenes etc. - they would be good on a film but lost me on paper. Overall an enjoyable read, and would recommend to those that love dragon lore- but a very long book.

This was a great book. I don't generally read fantasy and/or dragon books, but am definitely looking forward to reading more from this author. I enjoyed the adventures of three unlikely friends and the story of Hualiama finding herself and her inner strength.

At first I couldn't quite grasp the story, then some history came into play. Got better and better as the chapters progressed. I really enjoyed how humor was weaved throughout the story by the author, especially the journey bringing out emotions and growth of the heroine. Definitely an original with personality flaws of both people and Dragons, and I was unable to put it down until I finished it.

Marc offered me the opportunity to preview and review his latest book, Dragonfriend, and I grabbed it with both hands.

Marc has created a wondrous world, and with each book he fills in more detail about it and its workings, always leaving me wanting more, always wanting that next insight, that next peek into the mysteries. In this book, he’s fleshed out a story that was hinted at in the Shapeshifter series. And in the process, he’s created an enchanting and engrossing tale. Its a story about tensions and commitment, love and betrayal, terror and beauty. The story is focused on Hualiama, and the dragons and dragonets around her, in a world where this interaction is not always welcome.

A true page-turner, this book is captivating from beginning to end. The world building is nothing short of epic. The characters are endless in their complexity and beauty, and the interactions between them don’t always follow expected lines. If you’re a fan of fantasy and of dragons, this book is an absolute must-read.

Marc Secchia has hit another one out of the park!!! I have read other books set in the same world (Aranya) and loved those too. Dragonfriend made me laugh, and cry. My heart broke for Lia, for her childhood, her fathers, and for her love found and lost. I'm downloading Dragonlove to continue my journey with Lia.

This book ended up being about love, friendship, loyalty, acceptance of others differences and of course unfair treatment of others because of those differences. I loved the story and have started the next book in the series and it is already looking good so far. I hate to say it but the end was so sad it had me blubbering like a baby! I don't usually get that attached to the characters in a book to get that emotional but I did on this one! I recommend it 100%.

Dragonfriend

Marc Secchia

3/5 Stars

I received a free copy from Netgalley in exchange for my honest, unbiased review. Let me just say, this book has amazing potential. It has a fantastic story line, amazingly well-rounded characters, a beautiful new world, and DRAGONS! I tried so hard to love this book, I truly did, but one thing got in the way, one huge thing. The lack of description. Some flaws in a book can be easily overlooked, easily forgiven. But the amount of description that was left out killed this book for me. I could not follow what was happening most of the time because the author tells the story strictly through dialogue and the main character's current emotions. There are few landscape and surrounding descriptions, bare to none character descriptions, and almost zero imagery. It makes the story telling muddled, and confusing. I think that this story may have even earned a perfect rating if only the description had not been left out, it has that much potential. My hopes are that a publishing company finds the potential in this author's story and, with the help of an editor, turns this book around. Until then, I will be patiently waiting for the next installment, because despite its flaws, I have fallen in love with its world and characters.

I love dragon novels and this one was no disappointment. There is plenty of action, danger, and a great cast of characters (including the dragons). I know this is part of a series but this first book gave us a satisfying place to stop until we read the next one. I'm anxious to know what happens next.

I was looking for a interesting series to read involving dragons and oh boy did I find it! Great story, extraordinary characters and fine writing all included in book one. The ending made me sob. I rarely get so emotionally involved with a book and this one stole my heart. I loved it and highly recommend reading it. Now on to book two. I'm expecting great things to come

This is the best book I have read in a while. A masterful use of lauguage. Conveying ideas with intelligent use of descriptive words and well edited. Almost nonstop action with a good mix of humor. Shakespearean style insults and a rich interaction of characters.

This was an excellent sequel. It was nice to see more character development in the second book. I was also happy that the author didn't just give the main characters immediate happiness with nothing really getting in their way, but instead showed that both Lia and Grandion had some flaws to their person and that they had to overcome quite a few things to make their relationship more.
Overall, the story is beautifully written, and if you liked the first book I would definitely recommend that you read this one.

The is an amazing story of a girl and her newfound friends. This journey will make you laugh and cry. I recommend this book to ones who love daring journeys and dragons. This book was well written. I laughed, and cried with the characters. It was easy to get drawn into the world that the author created. I will admit that there were a few places where I felt like perhaps the story progressed too quickly without enough details; however, they were very few and far between. I will definitely be purchasing the rest of the series, as I am already attached to Lia and the others.

As a longtime fantasy reader, I just love a good dragon tale. So I was happy to dive into a new one, especially one that promised a lot of dragon action alongside a coup and subsequent revolution, featuring a princess who knows how to kick some butt. And on these elements, Marc Secchia certainly delivered with Dragonfriend, the first novel in a series with the same name.

If you enjoy a read with a strong female lead character who must overcome seemingly overwhelming odds in order to achieve a goal that seems way too big for her, then you’ll enjoy this book. Lia isn’t a typical spoiled princess, but she’s certainly been sheltered in some ways (while becoming quite jaded in others), so the book begins with a threat to her very survival. Later, her goals solidify, and she gains friends and assistance along the way, which is very much in the fantasy tradition.

Of course, what epic fantasy would be complete without a cast of amusing and fascinating characters, and Dragonfriend is no exception. Apart from the humans who throw in their lot with Lia, there are the dragons. Her very first friend in this book is the dragonet Flicker, who saves her life and befriends her at great cost, and he remains steadfast throughout the novel, offering Lia as well as any reader of this book laughter and tugging at heartstrings.

Then there’s an Ancient Dragon, who’s pretty much a scaly Gandalf, and the dragon Grandion, who comes in a bit late to the party but who more than makes up with it when he does because he ups the adrenaline factor by a peg or two. I’d go as far to say that the dragons really make this story, and one dragon in particular wrenched my heart out of my chest and had me ugly crying during a very dramatic scene.

However, despite a surplus of feels, I felt I couldn’t quite give this read five stars. I had a difficult time wrapping my head around the nitty-gritty aspects of the world-building like geography, physics, and politics; it felt almost as if this wasn’t the first book in the series, even though it is. The first half of the book also tended to drag a bit in terms of action and development, and while I still enjoyed this section, I felt like it could have been tighter.

Finally, there was Lia’s rather complicated emotions when it came to dragons, and to Grandion in particular. Maybe it’s because I read a lot of steamy novels, but some of the interactions between characters had my imagination going in a direction that was decidedly not YA-friendly, and while nothing actually happened, there were things that could be picked up and found disturbing if your brain is wired a certain way (and obviously mine is).

Overall, I’d say this was a pretty solid epic fantasy, notwithstanding the issues mentioned above. And seriously, the feels in the second part of the book will have you feeling you’re driving fast on a hilly road—or maybe even riding a dragon.

If you’re looking for a book to read until you find a book to really engulf yourself in, Dragonfriend will do.

The storyline is a bit cliché, but what makes it tough to stick to is the editing. It can be very choppy at times, and the story jumps on you to the point that you have to re-read the last few paragraphs to make sure it wasn’t you missing details, but rather the writing.

I ordered the paperback version and am very disappointed that the book starts on page 9 ... I have to open the kindle sample every time i want to refer to the map, or read pages 1~8?! Really? This is a shame because I genuinely like the story...Please fix this for future page-turning addicts!

I loved this book. I loved Lia and all the characters. I could never have dreamed a plot so complex and compelling. The author created a world so vivid and alien, I feel like I have been there. I feel like I have seen and ridden a dragon. Wow! To top it off if was clean. Romance, action, adventure, and a sense of wonder permeate this book. The magic development is slow and I am not sure where it comes from or what powers it, but I loved it. I have already purchased the sequel. Well edited, very few mistakes. I think I will check out other books by this author.
