Didn't read the book when it was originally titled "The Legend of the Werestag", I like How to Catch a Wild Viscount title better. It sounds better and it entices me to read it more. The story of Cecily Hale and Viscount Luke Trenton of Merritt and how their love flourishes.

I have a bit of a love affair with Tessa Dare's books. Her characters always captivate me and I FEEL for them. This book was no different.

Luke is a bit of a mess after his time in battle. He can't imagine sullying the innocent girl he knew with his pain and heartache. Good thing Cecily's wily and won't take no for an answer. She's stronger than Luke thinks and she's determined to have him for her own. Not before a few hiccups along the way, however.

A hunt in the country, one haunted man, and a woman who fights for what she believes in. Yep, this book worked for me.

This is a short novella about friends meeting at a house party getting involed in a local legion.Cecily Hale and Luke Trenton are the main characters. He left for war four years ago and Cecily had given him her heart .He cared for her and thoughts of her kept him going. He is now back a hardened and changed man. He lost his soul and caring. He thinks she is to nice and weak a person for him. She could not care the way he is now. She has changed she helped with the returned wounded and is a strong woman now. This is not a paranormal romance they only talk of finding the werestag a legend. I will not reveal any more since this is such a short novella. I realized that I had read this story before under the old title. I think it is an average story one I would not read but once.

Cecily Hale believed that she and Luke Trenton, Viscount Merritt, had experienced something special before he left to war 4 yrs. ago. But when he returned he didn't seem eager to continue their relationship. Cecily is baffled and disappointed by his cool demeanor. Both of them are at a house party at Swinford; when talk centers round a mythical creature in the woods of Swinford; the group heads out to try and find it. Cecily finds more than she bargained for; when her life is saved in the woods she assumes it was some unknown hero. The book is cookie cutter material, not one of TD's better moments.

This book was okay. It wasn't a great book by any means, but for a Kindle freebie, it wasn't half bad.

I understand that Luke's character was supposed to be this war ravaged soul, but he just seemed juvenile to me. It seemed like he was playing the "Everyone pity me because I went to war and saw horrible things" card. He treated the heroine kind of like crap. If I were her, I would have married the other guy. Maybe the other guy didn't inspire raging passion, but at least he treated her with respect. Luke played the hot and cold game. One y minute he was all over Cecily and the next he was shoving her away. I just couldn't get behind their love story all that much.

I'm a fan of Tessa Dare, but this is not her best work. Even a "not so good" work by Tessa Dare is still a good read. I did not like this one very much, because it had a fantasy aspect to it, which I really don't like in the romance novels that I read. In fact I don't like to read books fantasy books at all (Lord of the Rings, etc.). I only read it because it was free and I was curious what an early writing by Tessa Dare was like.

This was a quick and easy read with real life situations. The hero suffers from PTS and an image of the heroine that hasn't change in 4 years so he thinks he is unworthy. The heroine has waited for the hero but has not just sat home sitting by the window. She has grown up while helping injured soldiers and sees the world through different eyes. I also enjoyed the supporting characters.

I liked this story and it was well written, making the story line easy to follow. The author drew you in and allowed us to experience her characters emotions throughout the story. The story had intrigue, suspense, some violence, the unexplainable, (supernatural maybe), some surprises, some sexual scenes, romance, and as always a happy ending. Too short.

Very short and just plain boring. I guess if you want a quick read that you don't have to think about then it's ok. The only reason I gave it a two instead of a one star was that I liked the characters.

I stopped reading any further when I read a part that the hero told the heroine that he did not intend to marry her even though he loved her. btw, he knew she loved him too. the hero wanted the heroine longed for him but yet could not have him after she married to her cousin. He would then haunt her dreams in years to come. What kind of hero is that? Why would that heroine still want him? I didn't know if he corrected his confession in the rest of the book. but, whatever! not my cup of tea.

Steaming hot, this short will have you wishing you were back in time. Cecily has been waiting for over four years for Luke to come back to her. The entire time he was away at war, she waited. But she was done with waiting. It was time to take matters into her own hands. Luke wasn't the same young man he was before he left for war. He had seen too many horrors, killed too many men during his time away. The only thing that brought him home was his memories of Cecily. He continues to distance himself from her, desperately trying to preserve his own heart from losing her, because he's absolutely sure she would never want the beast he believes himself to be.
This is a wonderful tale of "cat and mouse" as the two main characters try to unravel the strings that hold them together, yet keep pulling them apart. Ms. Dare has a wonderful gift, and certainly knows how to put the words together to pull us in and keep us attentive. Worth the read.

‘How to Catch a Wild Viscount’ is set in a war time England. The story was short, sweet and pretty predictable but satisfying nonetheless. Mainly because the heroine Cecily is fabulous, knows what (who) she wants and goes for it. She has waited years for her man to come home from the war and take up where they left off... with a kiss in the moonlight. But the war has changed him, and he's determined to resist her.

This was a fun story. This novella shows why Tessa Dare is such a popular author. I just loved the story of Luke who is horrified by what he experienced in the Napoleonic War and what he has become but as I said I Also loved Cecily who has grown over the 4 years from a naive debutante to a thoughtful woman.
I found the secondary characters Portia and Brooke really intriguing as well. I really enjoyed this short story. It has left me wanting to read more from Tessa Dare.

This is a tongue-in-cheek Gothic romance, about a small house party just after the Napoleonic Wars. A returned soldier feels he is no longer able to marry, the young woman who waited for him is not so sure of herself; while another woman wants to write a Gothic novel about a were-stag that might or might not be lurking in the estate woods.

I enjoyed the tale and atmosphere and I was pleased that we meet a lady of quality who has spent time nursing soldiers. (Just changing bandages; servant class women would have changed bedpans.) The physical romance element seems out of place, while no reference is made to the one reason many women desired to marry; to be in charge of their own household, not subservient to family with no purpose. Also every character seems one sided except our heroine.
This short novella is a romance for mature readers.

I’ve never read a book that I hated from the first sentence. I could barely get through the first few pages, needless to say I eventually gave up reading the silly thing altogether. Stupid characters, just all around unlikeable and the premise was even worse. If there is some equivalent of a Razzie Award for books, this should be a very strong contender for the winner... so stupid! I had not read a book by this author that I would give less than 4 stars to so I think this was just a fluke as she is a pretty good writer. She should promptly take this one off of the market and forget it ever existed. I know I want to.

Luke Trenton, Viscount Merritt, returned from war a changed man. Battle stripped away his civility and brought out the monster from within. He thinks he has nothing to offer the innocent girl who pledged her heart to him years ago. Cecily Hale is a woman determined to hold on to her heart’s desire. She and Luke are guests at a party when a local myth captures their friends' imaginations. While the others rush into the forest looking for a legendary stag, Cecily's on the hunt for a man. She has only a few moonlit nights to reach the real Luke or she could lose him to the darkness forever. This was an okay historical romance, but it bored me. I wanted more, more depth in the characters, more plot, and more suspense. It was extremely short.

I quite enjoyed this quick novella by Tessa Dare. Luke was the strong, silent man Cecily has loved forever. He was a wonderful broody character.

Cecily knew what she wanted and went after it. I loved this about her. All in all, I really wish this was a longer book, so that I could spend more time with these characters.

This is a great short story. There's a touch of the Gothic with the legend of the werestag (man who turns into a deer), but the real story is how Cecily has waited all these years for Luke to come home from the war. Surely that last kiss meant that he loved her? However, he thinks he's far too damaged to be a good match for Cecily, but she is determined not to let him get away again.

It was a very entertaining short read, what best for a short time cut.
Both the H and h have changed over the years.
Luke returned from war a different one, damaged and stripped from a part of his humanity, because of this he thinks he does not deserve Cecily’s affection.
She has spent years yearning for his return but now that he is here, he avoids her or acts like she is no one. But she too is no more the naive young woman who let him go to war.
This was a cute story about two persons who are no more who they were, now to both to see if they can fit together.
The author did a good job narrating this stag chase with two protagonists on the run for each other.

This is a book about a far gentler age where men were more courteous and women were taught some things just are not done! No really this is a good book about the age where things are gentler.
Cece and Luke have been in love for 4 years.
Without telling each other. They are staying at a house with others and the others are really funny.

The style is good, the story of the werestag is captivating (and I regret that the original title, The Legend of the Werestag, was later changed) and the side love story between Portia and Mr Brooke is lovely, but I found hardly believable that a 1815 heroine would honestly think to win a man’s love offering herself to him. I disliked the sex scene and its motivations and I could not warm to a love story based on such flimsy premises.
