While wandering through the local bookstore four years ago I came across Sabriel in the Young Adult section. Noticing the cover I picked it up and read the first chapter. I was hooked. I must have read the copy I bought that day at least 40 times. I became such a fan of Mr. Nix's writing that I named my cat Mogget! But I digress, as I understood it Mr. Nix was supposed to only write a sequel. Lirael turned out to be the second book in a trilogy, the third to be the forthcoming, Abhorsen. Well, after I finished Sabriel in a manner of hours I knew their would be a sequel so I set out looking for one. After manny publishing delays I finally got my copy of Lirael. All I can say is that Mr.Nix is a masterful and engrossing writer. Lirael is a intelligent, brave and a thoroughly colorful charecter. I admit in the beging I was warry with the prospect of suicide, but she shone for the remainder of the novel. Lirael shares the spotlight with Prince Sameth, the son of Sabriel and Touchstone(Yes, they did get married!). He shows flashes of bravery and cunning, but for the most part he acts spoilt and afraid. These two are surrounded by a stellar supporting cast. Touchstone, Sabriel, Mogget(yes!) Sanar and Ryelle(the Clayr twins) you will remeber from Sabriel. Ellimere; daughter of Sabriel, the Disreputable Dog; loyal companion to Lirael, Nick; school companion of Sameth and not to mention the evil Hedge and Chlor who work for a higher evil. The story goes into how Lirael does not fit in at the Clayr's glacier home and goes to seek a man the Clayr have Seen. Parallel to Lirael's life is that of Sameth's. They meet mid-adventure and team up to find Nick and put down the dead. But will Lirael ever find her place? This is a story of high fantasy, adventure, mystery and human emotions. I loved the plot and dialouge. They both flow with seemless grace. This is a masterful piece of fantasy literature and both Sabriel and Lirael will always be high on my list so I recomend Lirael even if you haven't read Sabriel. Enjoy!

Lirael is an amazingly complex book that switches back and forth between two characters. (Sam and Lirael). The beginning is dark, as Lirael is considering committing suicide! The beginning is quite slow, but once you start going and finish the book and re-read the beginning, it's fascinating! But, if you're a young reader who only reads books that start right away (the action) this book is not recommended for you. Take it from a 15-year old teen that's into metalcore to buy this book. If i bought it and loved it....you will too. Oh, and I recommend that you read Sabriel before this book in case you're not into the zombie idea or something...

I can't recall how many times I've read these books. They're like old friends inviting you back in over & over. I have them as audio books as well and listen to them while I travel. Garth Nix has done an amazing job creating this fantasy world that envelopes you. You will not be sorry if you crack open these series.

Lirael was a wonderful book, I couldn't put it down and i read it twice.Lirael is about a teen who isnt gifted with the ability to see into the future like the rest of the daughters of the Clayr. She wants to commit suicide, but then is given another chance to be a librairian. There she finds many thing sabout herself and discovers some magical objects that help her in a journey. She is called by the Clayr and is told that they Saw she would be somewhere, but it was far away, so she begins a journey to get to that place, and an this lon gjourney she meets some very important friends, and learns more about herself than ever seemed possible. It has awesome action and suspense, great twists, the characters are awesome, and I could go on and on about how wonderful it was. I Couldn't wait to read the sequel, which I did and it was great too.And I read the one before it, Sabriel. Garth Nix is a great author, I became a fan of his when a friend of mine recomended the Seventh Tower series. I recomend Lirael to any fantasy lover, or any book lover for that matter. Definitely a rewarding read.

Lirael starts off differently than where Sabriel ended, so if you haven't read Sabriel I think you'll pretty much understand Lirael. Throughout the entire book, there are two stories going, one about Lirael and one about Sameth. Every few chapters Nix goes from Lirael's story to Sameth's, and almost everytime he ends the chapter on a cliffhanger and I wanted to know more! It sounds confusing, but it's really not and he ties the two together very well.
Overall, this book was just great. It kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time I read and I never wanted to put it down! It is definately as good or probably better than Sabriel, but that's just my opinion. It may be too dark for younger readers, but I'd say 10-12+ are good ages to start reading Nix. Parents may also want to preview the books first depending on the maturity of the child. These are not like any other young adult books! Read them all; they're good for you.

This book was an excellent second book to Garth Nix's trilogy. You REALLY need to read the first one first though. When Lirael makes the dog and then fights the free magic creature I was amazed. Even if she did seem like a total misfit you had to love her because from the first chapter and her first suicidal attempt you could tell she was always in an adventure. Then when you heard about Sam- or Prince Samath -almost getting killed by Hands the first time you meet him!
But the best part comes at the end... which I WONT tell you because that would soooooo ruin the book seeing as how if you are reading this you have NOT read the book yet. But how the end just STOPS i mean it literally stops in the middle of the action! Its killer! but it was a great way to basically force people to buy the third book because you HAVE TO KNOW if that great spirit... the one with the nine free magic creaters of the Charter. yea well i wont say anymore but OH MY GOODNESS READ THIS BOOK! it is increadible! but make sure you read Sabreal before you read this one because it will be loads better!

Wow. That pretty much sums up this book and its prequel, Sabriel. I must have read Sabriel at least a few hundred times from the first time I read it, almost FIVE YEARS AGO!!! I had no idea then that there was to be a sequel and no one could have understood how surprised and delighted I was when the store "advised" me to read it, almost a month after it was released. Normally, if I had known I would have pre-ordered it years ago.
Anyway, this book (and its prequel) are for anyone who enjoys fantasy, adventure, or just a good story. Both books have incredible characters, settings, and wonderful writing. But it is definately the plot and creativity that sets these storys above other fantasys, you will be amazed at how quickly you become entranced by these novels and how much, once you have read them, you will anticipate the final conclusion to a story began a long time ago.
Worth the full five stars, and a million more!

Number one, I refuse to be called one of the "potter" crowd (in a previous post)... I liked the books, but I liked Sabriel just as much, if not more so! I gave Lirael 4/5 because I think Sabriel deserves 5/5, and the sequal doesn't quite match up. The fact that it had a hanging ending didn't bother me (get over it people, that's standard book practice... at least it mentioned a sequel!) What did was the lack in mention of Sabriel and Touchstone. I just can't belive that they'd go off to Ancelstierre and leave the Old Kingdom to fend for it's self. The purpouse it serves is simply to give the new charactures some space to grow, but I personally would have liked to hear more of the old charactures, who are still by far my favorite! Oh well, at least Mogget was still around, if only in a sleapy state!:P I guess I can always hope that the next book will have more of my favorite Abhorsen!

It had everything about information that was announced, but not elaborated in the first. Sabriel circled around the basic knowledge of the Old Kingdom and the differences between it and Ancelstierre. Lirael brances off the information given in the first and joins the North and the South. There are many perils still putting the two in danger. They are not joined and still has the Wall dividing them, but the relationships between the governing offices have greatly improved. The magic of the Old Kingdom isn't as unstable and the Charter returned to its original greatness. The experiances that the characters take part in are exceptional. Garth Nix captures the voices of the characters to what would be expected, and then slowly changes them into who they are and what they are destined for. The new characters and the old coexist with an understanding of not knowing their true identities. The ending will blow you away. There are twists and turns the story line takes that confuse you and get you back on track. A must read for any fan of mystics and magic.

Okay, first off, just wanted to say that I LOVE Sabriel and Lirael. They are so different from any other books I've ever read and the stories so deep that it's just so much fun to read them! Lirael has so many twists and turns and the story plunges you into the book you just can't put it down...who'd have guessed that Lirael is akin to...I won't say it cuz it'll spoil the book but Garth Nix did such a good job with this sequel. The story continues with the same emotions as before. The ever ominous Death and Charter come up so much that you feel like you can become a Charter Mage yourself. If only I had my own set of bells and a spelled sword... I recommend this book and the one before it to ANYbody who loves a good book to just pour yourself into. Get lost in it! They should make a movie out of it. But then again, that would just mess up the book like any other book made into a movie. (i.e.: Harry Potter...it doesn't look too good) So I'm basically saying that this book rocks and I hope Garth Nix never stops writing to his perfection.

This book was so good, I had difficulties putting it down. While I really liked Sabriel, I didn't fully appreciate the world-building until I started Lirael and walked through it again. The world in this series is really excellently done and the characters are interesting as well. The real beauty of Lirael is the library though. I can hope Nix revisits it in the next book.

I read this book before I was in high school, and every time I reread it, I promise myself to someday read it again! In my opinion, this is the best of Garth Nix's Abhorsen trilogy books, but all are extremely well-written and amazing! The world Garth Nix creates in this book is very complex and interesting, and the plot and characters presented throughout the book are stunningly developed and authentic. This is a rare find among fantasy fiction!

Sabriel was a gem-and Lirael is...not quite as good as Sabriel. It seemed to be me as if the whole book was tinged with predictability. Lirael's so-called secret birth isn't exactly so hush-hush and readers, if they have read Sabriel before, can easily guess at her true lineage. Everything from her looks to her abilities to her platonic relationship with Sam hints at--well, I don't want to spoil it yet! And although I haven't read Abhorsen yet, I can almost guarantee that Lirael will have fond feelings for Sam's friend Nick. The ending was also disappointing; it left me with a sense of incompleteness and dissatisfaction. I realize that this is where the third book comes in but the skill with which Lirael was rounded off was lacking. The only reason I give it 4 stars is to save Sabriel face.

Lirael takes place several years after the time of Sabriel, in the old kingdom. And as usual, something fishy is going on. Someone is blocking the Clayrs' Sight and from one paticular area. Prince Sameth, son of Sabriel, is having Death troubles of his own. Meanwhile, Lirael struggles with her Sightlessness and becomes a librarian. The end of this book is slightly twisted and suprising. Also, it ends on a cliffhanger and it's to be continued in the third book, Abhorsen. When reading, expect the unexpected. And Garth Nix, keep up the good work!

Lirael really needs the reader to have read Sabrie in which Nix explains a lot of the magic behind the story. Lirael doesn't have a real ending but rather is a cliff hangger to be picked up by Garth Nix's next book in the series (and I think last) Abhorsen. This book is a must read for all Fantasy or even si-fi lovers. Garth Nix paints a wonderful setting with "dark magicand deep love"

Now see my chillins, many people often wonder long and hard, into the depths of the great Night, which, above everytihng else, MUST NOT be insulted. If you insult the Night, pigs will come and eat your cheese, and all heck will break lose, AND THEY'LL STEAL ALL YOUR WIMMINS!! THough of course, that wouldnt be a problem to some...For you see, right now I am lissinin' to the Nightmare Before Christmas CD, and it speaks to me...it says at the end of it that Sally and Jack have chillins. BUT! This arouses some questions as one intelligent individual says,
"Dude, Jack's a skeleton, and Sally's full of leaves...how is that umm...possible?"
And another....
"HOLY CRAP!?! I DIDNT KNOW A SKELETON AND A RAG DOLL COULD DO THAT!!!"
So as you see, this is blends into Lirael perfectly...it tells of truth, of love, and justice...but mostly of the hams...Yes child it is time I tell you about the hams. You are of age and are ready. You see this "kingdom" we live in now? Long ago it was ruled by the proud and just Steak, but then the Hams, with their allies the Burritos, Spam, and the Porks. Many have tries to save the kingdom, ut it was in vain **sigh**. The Burritos were the merciless slave traders. But you see, and this may come as a shock to you, I was raied by the Burriots...
**GASP** Tavi! No!
Yes, it is true. But the Burritos are secretely working against the Hams, and their allies. They freed many slaves...they are good people...meat... yeah...that sounds about it...
Tavi, are you serious!?!
Yes...
That's wonderful!
yeah...im hungry....it all comes together...

This book is amazing!! I don't know how Garth Nix does it! Lirael will keep you reading till 1:00 in the morning. If you haven't read Sabriel, then I suggest you get going because you're losing a big part of the mystery and beauty of the book if you don't. Garth Nix has written this story so well that I feel that if someone just told me how to get to the Old Kingdom, I'd become a Charter Mage myself!! Lirael is a young lady Clayr, yet does not have the "Sight." She is sorely detirmed to get it even when all chances are lost AND replaced by a new hope. Prince Samuel is also brought into the tale. (if you've read Sabriel than this might feel very weird!) Sam is Sabriel and Touchstone's son. He is also expected to be Abhorsen in waiting - a destiny he has been putting off for a very long time. The two characters come together to defeat the undead and free magic that is threatening the downfall of the old kingdom. I AM DYING FOR THE NEXT BOOK, "ABHORSEN!" I hope you enjoy Lirael as much as I did!

Garth Nix's amazing book Sabriel gave fantasy readers an exellent read when it was published a few years ago. His newest novel, Lirael, is equally as exciting and compelling. This book is something I would suggest for anyone, whether you are into fantasy/sci-fi or not. It has a sense of realism rarely accomplished by writers in this genre. While many writers would try to make the book more real by making the characters less mystical, with more obvious human characteristics, Garth Nix has given the characters a sense of reality by not making them seem childish, or funny, or trying to insert any modern-day phrases or practices. Overall, this is one of the best books I have read, and I look forward to the release of Abhorsen with great anticipation. Congratulations to Garth Nix on this wonderful book!

'Lirael' is a sequel to Garth Nix's wonderful 'Sabriel'. Although not quite as good as Sabriel it is still an excellent book. We learn more about the Old Kingdom, and more about the nature of Charter and Free magic. Have the nextbook 'Abhorsen' ready because the two are one story and you'll want to pick that one up as soon as you finish 'Lirael'.

OMI!!! this was the BEST book in the world. Only Sabriel and Abhorsen are at the same level as Lirael. With so much to read you just CANNOT stop until you are completely finished! With the brand new creature the Dog you are immediatly surprised and taken in by the magic. It was so good but it poses so many questions. How did Arielle die? Who is Mogget? and such.If you have read Sabriel than you should most certainly read this. It is kinda confusing at first but that alone is not enough to take away from such an amazing book. ENJOY!

I just read Sabriel and couldn't believe how much I loved it. Then I discovered to my suprise that a sequel had been written. This sequel being Lirael. I have read this book and let me tell you, it's amazing.
This book reads like real life, Nix has created such a deep and believable world that you come to the illusion that the action is truly taking place. His characters are sooo believable and well developed.
If you enjoyed Sabriel there is absolutely no reason for you not to read this book. I personally enjoyed it just as much as its successor and I await non-patiently for the final book of the series "Abhorsen".
The way this book builds is amazing and I know that all will love it. Sit down and read it, but not if you are going to be having to leave the house any time within the next 2 hours because..you'll never put it down.

I didn't like this book,I LOVED IT!!! it is a thrilling sequall to the book Sabreil(the first in the series),my favorite character was(well duh)the dissreputeble dog,or as mogget calls her"the horrible hound", i would not, however recomend reading it before you read Sabreil, that would leave you in the dark about who oh lets say Kerrigor is *shuder*.anyway it TOTALLY laeves you hanging and in my case, clambering for more. all in all i think it was a wonderfull book and if you like(d) it I would also recomend the sevanth tower seiries also by garth nix.

I loved this book. It's probably my favorite by Garth Nix. It had more action in it than the first book, Sabriel, did (probably due to this book's lack of romance, unlike Sabriel). I can't wait until Abhorsen comes out... but I'll keep reading Broken Sky until then...
Hey, why does everyone keep saying that Sameth is stupid? I felt bad for him. Okay, maybe he was too afraid to become Abhorsen, but you can't blame him. *enough* Ahem. I'm writing a review. On with it, then!
In Lirael, the two heroes, Lirael and Sameth (who is the son of Touchstone and Sabriel) are trying to find Hedge, and evil necromancer dude, and Sameth's friend (I think his name was Nick but I'm not sure). If you like fantasy, read it. If you like books, read it. JUST READ IT PEOPLES!!!!

(I recomend reading Sabriel first, but it isn't required) Lirael, Daughter of the Clayr is a great book for those interested in books involving magic and evil. Garth Nix has created a world with ongoing possibilities and a source of magic called the Charter. Lirael is one of those characters with the required corage, strength, and wit to save the destruction of her world, the Old Kingdom and Ancelstierre. If you have been interested in books such as The Lord of the Rings, or His Dark Materials series, you will definately like this book along with Sabriel and Lirael's sequel, Abhorsen. (Don't be discouraged by my mentioning of "saving the world".) I garantee you'll love this book. If you don't read it, you'll be missing out on a great adventure!

Garth Nix yet again creates such a book that contains absolutely amazing details.
At first this book may not be that appealing to you, but you really should continue on into the 1st chapter as the prologue is very mysterious and confusing at first so you might take it that the book wont be that good. But it is quite the opposite.
This book was made with SO much detail and was elaborately pieced together in such a wonderful framework of imagination, it is completely mind blowing. I would definately recommend this book to mostly teenagers, and those who enjoy an awsome fantasy read! I am definately sure that the conclusion of the books, Abhorsen, will be yet even better! Cant wait for that one to come out.

At 14 Lirael has not recieved the Sight. She is really upset. She finally decides to work in the library. The library is the only place where she feels secure but she wants the sight. She makes a sending dog named Derisputable Dog. Dog and Lirael discover a room in which she discovers a huge secret which might explain why she hasn't recieved the Sight. She sets off and meets up with the Abhorsen-In-Waiting, Prince Sameth, son of Sabriel. They set off to find his friend, Nicholas. They go to the Abhorsen's house where the they find a big secret. This is only a sum of the adventures in this book. The story leaves off there and will pick up in Abhorsen. This book was a very good book and i recommend it to everyone who has read Sabriel.

I was absolutely astounded when I saw that people in the store had rated this book lower than Nix's last in the series - Sabriel !at 5 *s. Actually, I gave them both 5 stars, but this one is still better.).
This book is written to endear us - and it's better than Sabriel because it has a dog in it!! Lirael is someone we can empathise with, and Sabriel and Touchstone make a comeback which completely explains the life they have made for themselves.
The only problem with this book is the way it left us dangling at the end!! I can't wait for The Abhorsen, Garth Nix!

Older readers may be put off by the marketing which puts this fine book in the young adult market, but they shouldn't be. It's strongly written and compelling by any standards and is no more of a children's book than Lord of the Rings.
I didn't find Lirael quite as strong as Sabriel, hence the four stars rather than five. But I'm still going to read the follow-up book as soon as I can.

Lirael, the sequal to Sabriel, is the best book I've ever read. Most likely because I totally connected with the main character, Lirael (I love to read books about people who also love to read books). As a "late-bloomer" I loved being able to read about a heroine whose emotions and fears are real and I felt like I could empathize with the girl. Nix introduces us to two new breeds of Charter, the Wallmakers and Remembrancers (Or more correctly Remembrancer). Join Lirael and Sameth (a prince) on this journey of self-discovery and finding friends to a place beyond your wildest dreams. Nix leaves readers begging for more.

A satisfying read. Note that the story continues in the third book, Abhorsen, unlike the first book in the series Sabriel which is a stand-alone story. Nix is a great writer, and the main characters are interesting, sympathetic, and relate-able.

'Lirael: Daughter of the Clayr' is one of the best sequals I have ever read. Instead of making up an entirely new plot and conflict, Lirael takes from the first in the series 'Sabriel' very well. I would definitely read this book after reading Sabriel. It has some adult content (suicide, sex), so I wouldn't reccoment it to people younger than ten. Look out though, because the ending leaves you hanging for the next in the Series 'Abhorsen'.

I loved Sabriel, and I thought this was even better. It had even more magic, and I loved the two main characters. I was able to figure out just enough about the story but not too much. If you have not read the summery, basically, its about a girl who lives in a community in which all girl recieve the "SIGHT". The sight alllows them to see into the furture and recieving it is, while an honor, not unusual. However, Lirael, is 14 and still has not recieved it- unheard of where she lives in the Clayr's Glacier. It follows her eand her progression until she finds out her parentage. This book was AMAZING. However if you have not read Sabriel, read that first.

This series must be read in order to understand all of the information. The main character's name is Lirael, and she is a daughter of the Clayr, the people who can see into the future. The dark complexion and light hair and eyes of the Clayr make Lirael an outsider, along with her lack of the "Sight". Her adventures inside the Clayr's Glacier is many and dangerous, including the battle against the Stilken, a creature resembling a human female with silver eyes and hooks on forearms as long as it's legs. With the help of her friend and only "family" the Disruputable Dog, she succedes in these and many of her other adventures.

If you thought that Sabriel was good, then you must read Lirael, the 2nd book in the trilogy. Lirael is the daughter of the Clayr, and doesn't seem to fit in with there life style. She meets up with Prince Sameth, Sabriel and Touchtone's son, and they continue to fight dead hands, and many of the greater dead. Even more wonderful then Sabriel, it is the most amazing book I have ever read. It was wonderfully written, and I don't know what else to write. It was wonderful, and all my freinds keep wanting to borrow it. A Must Read for anyone who remotly liked Sabriel or any other fantasy.

The way Barth Nix leads you into Lirael's story is priceless. The sentences and paragraphs form a movie screen in your mind where, after you pass the first chapter, you no longer control the stop button. I recomedn this book for all young adults for it opened my eyes into a whole world of fantasy and imagination. Garth Nix is a Mage with words in this gem of a book.

Ok! Lireal is a fatastic book. I love the dog and it is really cool how Lireal figures out how to make the best of things. Although, I personally didn't like what happend to Sabriel and Touchstone. They seemed to loose their flare. This book, like Sabriel didn't end very well I know there is going to be another book but Nix could of put a better ending on it (I had to reade Shade's Children to make sure Nix new how to end a book). Anyway this is a a great book read it, BUT READ SABRIEL 1st or eles you will be lost! Mogget Rules hehe!

I first read sabriel and that book flung me into the old kingdom and i was an instant fan. The book can be related to everybody's lives and i am sure it is in everybodys dreams too. This made me pick up Lirael and read it, at first I was saddened to see that I would no longer be reading about sabriel, but infact a daughter of the clayr which we hear little about in the first book, but before long i was transfixed in the old kingdom with sameth and lirael who i could relate to. It is an excellent book, when you turn the pages, you don't see paper, you see charter marks. Charter marks for excellent literature and magical reading.

Garth Nix is a great writer! I loved this book. It had me just page burning and now I'm so glad that the 3rd book in the series is out because, well I can't tell you as you will have to read it yourself. (Plus I love the use of the Clayr vs the Claryoint!) Also the dog really does steal the story once he appears.

Garth Nix brings his thrilling world of fantsy alive again in this beautifully written sequel to Sabriel. A combination of thrill, chill and pure fantasy, Nix has made an unforgetable creation. The young heroine, Lirael follows her destiny through the dangerous world of the Old Kingdom with the help pf her faithful and funny companion the Disreputable Dog. Joined by the young Prince Sameth, Sabriel's young son, the two join forces to battle the most powerfull and dangerous enemy yet. This book will have you hooked from the first page to the last.

With Lirael, Nix joins the ranks of Disch, Jacques, and Pullman when it comes to engaging fantasy for young adults. Lirael is an intoxicating and captivating tale for children of all ages, and lovers of good fantasy... Gary S. Potter Author/Poet.

Garth Nix has truely dazzled us with yet another masterpiece. After reading Sabriel many readers were itching for more and wanted a sequel. After waiting for what seemed like forever, Lireal is here to amaze us again! His second novel in the series moves just as fast as the first one. If you haven't read Sabriel, I recommend reading that one first so you understand part of what's going on. He ends it at a point where we want more and more. But we have to wait for the third in the series, Abhorsen. Highly recommended for teens and children at heart. A mix between fantasy, realism, love, adventure, and sci-fi. Thriller for all!

After finishing Sabriel, I could not wait to start this one. It did not take me long to finish it, and overall it was very good. However, I did not like Lirael as much as Sabriel, who was barely in this one. But the thing I did not like most was Sam, Sabriel and Touchstones son. He was very whiny and annoying, and self centered. He was very off putting and I hope he will grow up some in Abhorsen- which I cannot wait for! Don't get me wrong, this is a great book, but the characters are not as good. Though not as good as Sabriel, i still reccomend it for those who liked Sabriel.

When I frist read Sabriel in a school library, I didn't get it. Now, after several years curiosity made me read it again, and I don't regret the choice.
When I first got Lirael, I expected it to be only a few years after Sabriel, not fourteen, with her pretty much the main charecter. So I was disapointed when Sabriel didn't appear as much as I wanted her to. But that was more than made up by a new person, Lirael, whos personality is just as absorbing as Sabriels.
Great job and keep it up, Mister Nix!

Lireal is one of the very books I've ever read, and I've read two that are very, very hard to beat to make it into the top (of my list, anyway). And this one followed directly in Sabriel's footsteps and into the top three. Outstanding discription, along with a very ensnaring plot are sure to make countless numbers of people read it over and over again. Add the many twists and turns, and it leaves even the most proud reader begging for more.
The only thing that truly irked me was that it's a 'to be continued.' Now I have to wait for Abhorsen to come out.

Just like my title, I thought this book was only semi-perfect because...THEY LEFT ME HANGIN'! I guess it's a good way to get you to buy the next book. But besides that I thought it was a very good book. Garth Nix is a very good writer and I can't wait for Abhorsen to come out. His detail makes you feel as if you really are in the book. The Old Kingdom and Ancelstierre creates a perfect world for Sabriel, Lirael, and Abhorsen to be in.

I liked the book a lot. I strongly recomend you read Sabreil before reading this book. Both are great books. I did not excpect the ending at all. I didn't like the way the author ended it. I guess he had in mind a sequil, that's why I gave it a 4. It was a fast read. If you've read Sabriel then I strongly urge you to read Lireal. Tell Garth Nix that he needs to get going on the sequel to Lirael, not another Seventh Tower Series book! I Highly recomend this book to fantasy lovers.

This is one of the greatest fantasy series i've read since phillip pullman's "his dark materials" series. "Lirael" is a great book, and the ideas in it are--there is no other word for it--ingenious. as w/ all series, it is probably a good idea to read "sabriel" first, as it will give you a better understanding of what is going on. this book left me dying for the conclusion. i couldn't believe it when i turned the page, and there was only "to be continued in 'abhorsen'" waiting for me!

Though this book wasn't as action packed and enthralling as I'd hoped, I still love it. I'm disappointed with the fact that it really was a couple hundred pages just to set up for the final installment, but I can't help but love it in spite of myself. I'll probably read it again in a few years :)

Lirael was a fabulous sequel to Sabriel. Gripping, with realistic imagery mixed into Nix's fanciful tale of two very different lands, one of which is complete with the walking dead and magic, while the other the total opposite reality, with electricity and normality. The focus of the story is around the Old Kingdom (The magical reality) and it's difficulties in maintaining a stable country, while evil (free magic spirits, and the dead) does everything within it's power to distroy it all.

Lirael is one of the best books I've read in a while. However, I recommend that you read these books in order. I started out with Lirael and then read Sabriel. It was still good though. I was very sad when I read Abhorsen...I didn't want it to end. It would be a wise choice to buy this book, it will be a good investment. Lirael's story pulls you in and you sympathise and also speculate what it is she is meant for if not the Clayr's visionary world. You have to read it to find out....

Garth Nix has done a great job of capturing the reader's mind and imagination with the book Lirael. This book is fulled with adventure, riddles and a love for the characters. Those who have read Sabriel will be very pleased with this sequel. The book contains some original things so you can recognize things from the book Sabriel but he adds new twists that will keep you wanting to read on. The book seems long when you pick it up, but take it from me it doesn't seem half that much. :)

Lirael is an amazing book. It is a fantasy full of adventure that constantly kept me on the edge of my seat. I had read SABRIEL a few months before I purchased this book, and I was a little nervous because I loved Sabriel and was afraid Garth Nix would try to replace her with Lirael. However, all my worries were pointless as LIRAEL is a completely different story, set in the same world as SABRIEL, and Sabriel herself still has a fairly large role in the book. I recommend LIRAEL to all book fans.

just not as good Sabriel in my opinion. Sabriel is 5 stars, and i would rate Lirael as a 4 3/4 stars. Now if Sabriel had been the main character, probably it would have been 5 stars. when the truth comes out about Lirael and who her parents are(more father than mother) at the end was stunning. Never would i have guested. When they encounter Chlorr and Sam rages into the fight the unknown necromance at that time, u could tell Sam and Touchstone are father, son. Just like Touchstone, excpet not as wimpy. As i said in my review of Sabriel, Garth has a gift for suspense. all through the book, i kept saying to myself, with is this evil and i want to no now. I definitely gonna read Abhorsen.

I had waited years to finally read the sequal to Sabriel which I consider one of my favorites and equal to anything I have read in adult fiction. Lireal was descent and interesting but a very slow beginning to the series of two new books. The ending was abrupt and the meat of the novel didn't really begin until the last say 50 pages. However I eagerly await Abhorsen since the real story seems to be underway.

I think that the book Lirael is an excellent book as is the pre-sequel Sabriel. This book is about a young woman named Lirael who despretly wants to be a proper Clayr which she is not. Lirael becomes a librarian and is sent away to battle evil. On her journey she encounters many obstacles and even something else. Half of this book is also about Sabriel's son Price Sameth and his encounters and adventures. This book is a good book for ages 9+ This was one of my faves.

I've read this book, and Sabriel twice a year, since I was 11. The first time I read Lirael, I locked myself in my room, and read the entire book in 6 hours. I couldn't put it down!!! The plots addictive, and you realy feel like you're part of the story, and that you're in The Old Kingdom. Even though it's fiction, it doesn't read like it. It's so smoth, and has no holes. This book is a great sequel to Sabriel, and is just as - or more - exciting. Lirael has her own "pet", just like Sabriel, only its a dog and she made it herself, out of a wood carving...
