I chose 4 stars because I thought this book was an excellent end to the trilogy. I did dock a star for the use of too much internet memes and slang. Phrases like "No f#%k's given" is a phrase used on Reddit; it will date this book. I also thought the cussing, while it'll felt natural, was a bit much. However, Mr. Grossman is an excellent storyteller, and this book is unput-downable.

The series got less and less compelling the further it went. This last one reads like an attempt to retroactively impose a structure on the first two - 'look it's been building to something' - coupled with a shift from 'fantasy book about fantasy books' to 'fantasy book about how fantasy books are actually about growing up / out of fantasies'. It's fine but the stuff that was interesting about book 2 gets sidelined for unfinished business in (no spoilers).

I became interested in the Magician Trilogy after reading a review of the third book. I did what any sensible person would do. I started with the first, and read them straight through. Fantasy/magic for adults. Not quite as "preachy" as TCON, but there are some very solid philosophical arguments presented about life in general and finding your own place in the world. Very enjoyable. I'm sorry the story ended.
Sequel to the International Bestseller Fingerprints of the Gods :: The Magicians; The Magician King; The Magician's Land :: The Magician King: A Novel (Magicians Trilogy) :: Magician :: A Novel (TV Tie-In) (Magicians Trilogy) - The Magician King

While I knew from the start that this series had potential, I was worried it wouldn't wind up fulfilling it. I'm glad to say I was wrong. Wonderfully imaginative and chock full of more happy endings than you could shake a stick at, this is the Magician book I've been waiting for.

A REALLY good book, but you do have to have read the first two for it to be meaningful. As much as I hated Quentin in the first book, he's really matured and has become even likable in this one. Though perhaps not as deep as the previous two, and one of the last lines sort of ruined the mystery and left a bad taste in my mouth about something, this is far and away the best book of the series

an adequate, but not brilliant, somewhat too-pat ending to this engaging series. tied it all up with a bow, when what had originally attracted me were the flaws in the characters and the anti-fairy tale feel. it seemed like it lacked the depth of the previous books. also: author has no idea what real female adolecent conversation sounds like. all this was forgiveable. I _was_ engaged and stayed up too late reading it. I was hoping for perfection and only mildly disappointed. still trying to get my husband to read the series.

When I was recommending the first Magicians book to a friend, I described the book as Harry Potter meets The Chronicles of Narnia meets Trainspotting. I was nervous to finally read the final book in Lev Grossman's masterful Magicians series, since I'd loved the previous two so much. I was also worried that it was going to end in a dark and messed up way. But the ending was fitting, beautiful, and surprisingly hopeful. This is one of the best fantasy series to come along in decades and I highly, highly recommend it.

For those looking for a more adult, down to earth and gritty Narnia, Fillory is everything you could hope for. This series is at once a scathing critique on the children's fantasy genre and a sterling indictment of it. Full of literary references both old and new this book provides an excellent escape from reality without disowning it entirely.

The plot lines are interesting, but the writing is weaker and more rushed than in the first two. It seems as if it were hurried. Some sentences feel like rough drafts. Punctuation is missing. Spelling mistakes. Poorly, or incompletely edited. I like the trilogy, the stories, and the characters, but this one felt like a solid dress rehearsal -- not quite the full performance. Still, for such creativity and vitality, the book is nice reading. I'd still recommend it as is, though it could have been even stronger.

The strangest thing about this series is that it's become part of my Narnia headspace, inextricably linked. It's self-aware Narnia, that knows how wonderful it is and what it means to us, and celebrates that with us.

Sometimes I'm amazed that humans can weave such magic. It redeems a great deal.

This book is a good read although a little sappy it retains the dark nature of the series. The first book really was made to confront and deny the fairy tale nature of fantasy, the second was confront and to mock all the tropes and quests of fairy tales, this book seems to try to reaffirm the happiness and mystery of fairy tales denied in the other two novels while still keeping the dark morose nature of the series, the ending leaves you wondering but confirms that, that is how life works.

An epic, touching and emotionally satisfying conclusion to The Magicians trilogy. I can only hope that someday Lev Grossman returns to this wonderful magic universe he created and tells us more tales from the Libraries of the Neitherlands.

Grossman once again marries the messy real world with the magical in a most gratifying way. Cliche though it may be, if you liked Harry Potter but are now a grown-ass person, this is probably the book for you.

Incredible end to an incredible series. It's rare that the end of a series isn't disappointing in some way, but Lev Grossman wraps everything up satisfyingly while staying true to the series's themes.

Lev Grossman managed to bring to the forefront some of the magic he lost in the second book of the trilogy in this excellent end to his series. Fantasy for grown ups that understand life isn't always happy ever after.

Every once in a while, I come across a book that is so captivating, I can't put it down. The Magician's Land is such a book. Thrilling from start to finish; a great conclusion to a wonderful trilogy. Grossman has been able to create a universe that feels like a mix between The Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia (minus the religious undertones) and Harry Potter, only more suitable for adults.

I don't know how to describe this one. I love the series as a whole, but this one seemed to just cram a bunch of story lines out of nowhere. I don't mind where things went, but turning a main character into a god for a few pages? Just weird. I don't dislike the book, but I would rather have seen a another book with some of those ideas fleshed out a bit.
