Really loved this book. Touching and endearing love story and a pretty quick read as well. Tessa Dares characters never cease to amaze me. I find it hard to put her books down. Victoria is a heroine worth rooting for and Christian is a man I would definitely love to dream about. So grab this book and dig in!

Took me just a few hours to finish but it was beautiful, arousing, adventurous, steaming with passions and love. A must read. The only downside to it is I wish it had more pages to read. But the ending was just perfect to start another book, another journey, another thrill that I hope to read.

This story was decent - if it were filled out it might actually make a decent book. The characters were one dimensional at best, there was no depth to the characters, the setting or the action. By the end of the story I didn't know the characters or care about them. A good book leaves you wanting more and a great book makes you sad when it's over because you want to know what happens next to the characters. This story did neither.

I know this is a novella but... I wish it could have been a whole book. It has the makings of such a great but it just seems to come to a crashing halt. I would suggest reading it but only if you want to know what happens the characters.

To see "The Disappointment" turned into "My Half" was quite enjoyable. The character of Miss Violet Winterbottom brought a smile to my face. To see her strength, her passion, her abilities and her resolve to love and to trust made this book a good read for me. I trust you will enjoy it as well.

I downloaded this because I'd read Dare's A Night to Surrender and this is the continuation of the Spindle Cove series, to be followed by the full-length novel A Week to Be Wicked, coming out in March 2012. Spindle Cove, as you may or may not know, is a refuge for women who are running from or trying to resolve certain issues in their lives. Susanna Finch, now Lady Rycliff (she found her Lord Rycliff in the first book), is more or less in charge of their empowerment lessons, with outdoor exercises such as hiking, sea bathing, archery, guns, and whatever else may be needed to give these women the opportunity to return to their former lives more confident and in full command of themselves. Few men live in Spindle Cove, except for the militia headed by Susanna's husband.
In this novella the heroine is Violet Winterbottom. It's December 1813 and an officers' ball is being held at Spindle Cove. Violet is somewhat lacking in self-confidence and prefers to be a wallflower. She is also nursing a heart broken in the past by her handsome next-door neighbor (aka The Disappointment) who loved her and left her. The ball is disturbed by the abrupt entrance of a wounded, wet, muddy man speaking a language no one understands. Violet, being versed in many languages, is asked to find out what's going on, especially since the military men at the ball are suspicious that this guy may be a spy.
There you are. The rest is to read. I'm reluctant to say this, but I did not find the experience enjoyable. Too much goes on, the characters aren't well developed and the plot is almost a farce, but I do not believe that that was the intention. Violet's character is inconsistent. The timid wallflower develops quite the fierce independent streak in such a short time. We're supposed to think it's personal growth but the change is too radical to happen in just a few hours. And the wounded hero here has nothing heroic about him. He's pretty much ineffectual at everything except sex. I didn't see him do one useful thing in the whole novella.
The story itself is overly busy, disjointed and a bit silly. For me, Tessa Dare's writing is not improving. I enjoyed her first trilogy released a couple years ago but nothing since then has impressed me as being an improvement on her debut work.

A stranger shows up, there is something about him that reminders her of a past love. Will she start something new or will she find something she thought was lost. It's great read, I couldn't put it down.

Tessa Dare has an exciting way of writing. Tessa keeps you entertained and captured during the entire read. This is the first book written by Tessa that I read, but have become an avid reader of hers since. The book has a wonderful story line of love, lust, apprehension, fears and eternal hope, in all a good love story but certainly not to soppy.

I wish i could give this book 0 stars but this site will not let me. This was the most backwards story i have ever had the misfortune to purchase. The story reads like a rough draft that needs more brainstorming and polishing. The story is rushed and too short even for a novella. It could of been a lot better if more thought out and not rushed.

There wasn't much of a story here. I want to say I finished it in about an hour. This plot had so much promise and had some more thought been put into it, I think this could have been a top 20 for me.

Christian and Violet, lovers separated by misunderstanding and circumstance finally meet again, declare their love and plan their future. I love Tessa Carr's work. Her characters, dialogue , plot and the pace of the book is first rate.

I love Tessa Dare's spindle Cove series but this one had me skipping pages looking for the lively read I have come to expect from her. The story was thin, weak, and lacking depth to the degree it sounded like a proposal for a novel that needed trimming down. A dissapointment.

This novella started off with an interesting premise, with a mysterious man crashing a ball where our heroine Violet is busy wallflowering. I enjoyed the mystery and the heroine's particular talent with languages. I will say that I felt the story sagged about two thirds of the way through, but for the price it was a nice, easy read.
This was my first time reading Tessa Dare, and I will probably be giving one of her full-length novels a chance soon.

I enjoyed the story line for this mini romance but I would have liked it to be much longer. It was just way too short. I enjoy Tessa Dare as an author and would love to see this story in a full length romance novel.

The self-made Wallflower and the "Disappointment". Christian and Violet's road to HEA was a fun read. This is a novella, so it's short... but it's a well developed story with strong characters. Tessa Dare, the awesome author, gave us enough of Christian and Violet's history... but she kept things pretty fast paced. And the storyline was very intriguing.
Great addition to the Spindle Cove series.

This is such a great book! I havn't read the first book in the series but believe me I'm going to...This is a very fast paced book. I seriously didnt want to put it down...... I read another reviewer saying this was a very short read 40min to 1 hr read, Im not a slow reader and it took me I think about 2 hrs maybe a bit more. This story is 10 chapters packed of adventure, and pure romance at its best. I fell in love with both H&H. I really dont want to get into the story because I would be spoling it. I highly recommend it if you enjoy strong female characters, a super romantic reedemable hero, a bit of adventure and a healthy those of passion. Read it, you won't regret it!!!

Don't read this book if you actually like reading historicals. The entire premise is ridiculous and shocking for the era is which this book is set. The language and behavior is completely unbelievable.

Rated 4.5 on the blog.
Another fabulous edition to the Spindle Cove series!! Have no fear if you haven't read the first one yet; but, beware, you'll want to after reading this novella! The short Christmas theme story is a fabulous addition to this series!
Once Upon a Winter's Eve is a great introduction for those who have not yet read, A Night to Surrender (book #1), but want to get a taste for Tessa Dare's fantastic writing style, setting, and character dynamics. This novella can be read as a stand alone, although readers who have read the first book will be left with a deeper appreciation and enjoyment of the series after reading OUaWE.
Spindle Cove -- aka. Spinsters Cove -- is the perfect place for young woman to either escape to, or be tucked discretely away from the prying eyes of the ton. Located not far from London, but far enough away from society, woman find a safe haven in this peculiar, small town, with the majority of the men belonging to a makeshift militia during the time that England is at war with France. Here woman can be themselves and find comfort and peace when the ton would only pass judgement and rumors.
In Once Upon a Winter's Eve, the novella length story is centered around Violet Winterbottom, the ideal woman who would find sanctuary at Spindle Cove. While I would love to talk about the great plot line, I simply can't because it would completely spoil the "Ah-Hah" effect! :)
What I *can* tell you is that reading OUaWE cemented my love for this series. Tessa's writing style is not only easy to follow and get swept away in, but she creates characters that truly seem three-dimensional. I was able to get a real sense of each character, how they worked through their emotions, and the way they grew and developed during the course of the plot. I have to also point out that Tessa throws in a great sense of humor, which obviously adds to the reader either laughing out loud with the characters -- or at them -- or even left feeling embarrassed by their actions.
Speaking of action, the plot moves effortlessly with and with continuous action. While reading this novella, I completely lost track of time and didn't put it down until the very last page.
And the passion. Oh, yes, the passion. Sexual tension -- check! Hot, romantic lovin' -- check! The hero is the sexy, dark, vulnerable, alpha, romantic type; you know, the one we all want for ourselves. And the heroin is a vulnerable, yet strong woman who had grown (from the telling of her back story) from a naive, in love girl, to a woman with strength and a strong sense of self.
It was just so easy to be transported to a small cove along the sea, enjoy these likeable characters, get swept up in the Christmas time romance, laugh at a few quirky moments, and rejoice -- and swoon -- in a great HEA for the couple. I would definitely recommend this Christmas time read for both beginners of the series and those of you who enjoyed book one!

Unbelievably contrived. I'm glad it was so short and even so I did some skimming to get through it faster. Didn't like either of the main characters and the plot was beyond belief. This has to have been the first draft of what clearly was never going to be a good book so it was turned into a cheap novella. I generally like this author but not this time.

Loved this novella. Christian was so wonderful and risked everything for Violet. So sweet and cute. ?
Safety : she crushed on him as a kid but once he saw her one night as a woman it's safe after that he's obsessed. She was a virgin he wasn't. Both celibate after their night together

Notice: I have not purchased any of these titles from the store and have them on my Nook or from the library. Just wanted to give full disclosure up front since I have seen comments before in the store reviews so if you have issue with that then do not read below...
I have read ALL of Tessa Dare's novels and love them! I checked out some from my library and own all the Spindle Cove novels and novellas as well as the Werestag novella. You will not be dissapointed with any of her writings except that they end! I would like to find a "comparable" author because I just know Tessa's work to be the best for my tastes with the right amount of story, character development, setting, and spice. I was not actually a romance reader until I stumbled upon a free offering of one of her ebooks on my Nook. I know egads not a Kindle but anyways... that was how I even found this genre and now am hooked!
I have always been a fan of period romance movies and am a stickler for anything set in the Victorian (or earlier) settings of Europe which all of her books are. I do have a few other free historical romances but I just know already I won't be as pleased. I wish Tessa would go full time just writing ONLY Spindle Cove series and that PBS or BBC would pick up the rights and make an ongoing romance seriers for TV that would be hot and heavy and for adult viewers but tasteful. Maybe Netflix??? Wouldn't that be incredible! LOL
Bascially to sum all this up do not worry one bit about purchasing any of her materials. You will love having them. I have read each of the Spindle Cove series twice and plan to re-read each once a year- Yes they are that good! I stay tuned for pre-orders and have always been on of the first to get a book as it comes out.

Violet Winterbottom came to Spindlecove after she was abandoned by a man with whom she'd been in love with. He left her abruptly after she'd given herself to him. Now, she only refers to him as "The Disappointment." Living at Spindle Cove she is considered a wallflower. One evening, during an officers ball, a beaten and bloodied stranger bursts in falls at her feet. Even more suspicious, the language he speaks is unknown but Violet is fluent in many languages and so she steps up as the interpreter. There is something familiar about this man and Violet must find out if he is a simple farmer as he claims, or if he is someone far more dangerous.
Believe it or not this is my first time reading Tessa Dare. All my trusted bookish friends have recommended this author but I just haven't found the time to try her out. Catherine reviewed A Night To Surrender here at Fiction Vixen and loved it so I decided it was finally time to take the plunge.
There is quite a lot going on in this novella. Action, intrigue, romance, and sexy times. With so much going on I was surprised at how easy the story was to follow and how easily I was taken in and whisked away into Spindle Cove. I really liked the hero and heroine however there were some things about the heroine I wondered about. Without giving away anything, I'll just say that as smart as she was, I think she would have picked up on a few clues much earlier than she did. But, that aside, I loved the chemistry and romance between her and the hero so much that I was willing to toss that little niggle aside.
Once Upon a Winter's Eve is a great Christmas time romance. I love the concept of Spindle Cove and look forward to reading about the other ladies that seek refuge there.

He speaks a language only she understands. She can be his greatest ally or his worst nightmare. They don't have much time but they plan to make the most of it.
Violet Winterbottom is a quiet young woman is recovering from a broken heart when she meets a mysterious man from a foreign country who distracts her from her memories of the man who left her abruptly after a passionate night together. The man who broke her heart was a refined aristocrat while the man she just met is a rough foreigner. So why in the world would they resemble each other? Violet is short on time and knows she must help the foreigner. If only he wasn't so distractingly sexy and charming.
Corentin Morvan is the foreigner who desperately needs Violet's help, but he's also quite taken by her. In the short amount of time that he has to accomplish his goal, he intends to leave no doubt in her mind that he means business.
Ms. Dare paints pictures for us with her words and spins a story that is exciting and romantic. Her descriptions are not overly done, but just enough to make the reader feel close to the action. The heroine starts out as a passive, quiet lady and becomes an assertive, quick thinking, brave woman as she helps the man who she is falling for. The hero's situation gave the story a twist that was interesting.
The struggle that these two go through, culminating in the heroine making her choice for her future, makes for a satisfying read. Even though it is a novella, it is thoroughly entertaining, with spicy love scenes. I also love the cover which really goes well with the story. This is a book that will be going on my "keeper shelf". If a clever Historical with a bit of intrigue strikes your fancy, pick up a copy of Once Upon a Winter's Eve today.

This was a really sweet second chance story. I’m not sure if the Violet we see in this book is quite the same as the bitter angry woman portrayed in the first book, but I liked seeing this side of her and getting a better understanding of why she’d been so bitter and angry. I love watching a rake’s reform and when he’s a rake, a cad, and a scoundrel, it becomes even more satisfying.

I loved A Night to Surrender, so when I discovered there was a Christmas novella from the Spindle Cove series, I couldn't wait to read it.
It doesn't matter if you haven't read the first book, but of course you will enjoy it better if you do. This time it's the story of Violet Winterbottom. She's very quiet and reserved, and prefer to suffer her heartbreak alone...until the day a stranger comes looking for her at the Christmas ball.
He's hurt, weak and chilled, and apparently doesn't speak English. Only Violet can understand him but he also looks familiar.
In only one night, she must discover if he's only a stranger fugitive or the same man who broke her heart a year ago. And if it's him, will she forgive him?
Once Upon a Winter's Eve it's a very sweet short and romantic story about heartbreak and forgiveness. Violet is very in love but doesn't want to be irresponsible again, but her heart can't let him go.
Of course, Tessa Dare's writing is still captivating. She creates realistic and funny characters, easy to like.
Overall, I really enjoyed Once Upon a Winter's Eve. It's the perfect novella to read for Christmas, it has sweet romance and a perfect HEA. I only wish it would have been longer, hehe.

Violet Winterbottom has been a wallflower except for this Christmas Ball at Spindle Cove when she has been Cinderella-ized by her friends. Suddenly there is a shriek and a mysterious foreign stranger who is wounded falls literally at her feet. Violet is a Renaissance woman who speaks many languages including some dead ones and packs a pistol. She becomes the interpreter as the mystery man mumbles in a foreign language. Her instincts tell her that there is more to this man than he is revealing, but she is not sure he isn't an evil French spy for Napoleon...except that there is something about him that reminds her of a first and only love...who left her after their first night of love-making. Her broken heart hasn't healed and the surprise twists of this story I will leave for you to discover...it is not what you think! You can read this in a few hours...and it's well worth the read.

A fun novella in the Spindle Cove series. A wounded Frenchman crashes the cove's Christmas Ball and makes a beeline for Violet Winterbottom, throwing everyone into a frenzy and the militia into action, fearing a French invasion (The Napoleonic War is raging, after all). He's held on suspicion of being a spy and Violet is tasked with translating any answers he gives. But the stranger is startlingly familiar to Violet. He looks an awful lot like the man who took her virtue and her heart and never looked back--the man who drove Violet to start a new life in Spindle Cove...
No spoilers! But this is an exciting little story covering one night of mayhem in Spindle Cove, with humor, adventure, steamy sexual tension, and of course, love. My only complaint is that there was very little Christmas in this Christmas tale. But I do love this series!

I purchased this book for $.79 when it was on sale. I think I got a great story for the price.
I was really impressed with the start of the book. A mysterious, handsome stranger, who speaks no English, stumbles into a ball and collapses in our heroines arms! But about a quarter of the way into the book, it started to lose steam for me.
I realize it's a work of fiction, and not supposed to be completely believable. But it really made little sense to me. It's great for entertainment purposes, and it was a fairly quick read, it only took me a couple of hours to read cover to cover.
I would recommend it for people who like Harlequin Historicals. It's not my cup of tea, but it isn't the worse book I've read lately.

Spindle Cove Series, Novella
Naughty Rating: Mild.
The Skinny: Violet Winterbottom is a relatively new resident to Spindle Cove, though even for the others, she's a bit of an anomaly: she's a quiet girl with a penchant for languages and well-placed vantage points used to pass her time as a wallflower, watching everyone around her. No one ever really notices Violet and it's just as well, considering she's still recovering from a secret heartache. Her family is demanding she return home and marry and she's trying diligently to muster the nerve necessary for a return to London when a strange man literally crashes the Christmas Ball she's attending.
Upon seeing his handsome, yet rugged face, Violet is quickly aware of several things: he doesn't speak English, she's the only person in the room who understands his language, he's noticed no other women in the room save her, and he's clearly more than what he seems. Old memories threaten to ruin her best-laid plans at recovery, but if she can't get this stranger to confess who he is, he may wind up arrested as a spy, a fugitive, or a smuggler - either way, his life would be forfeit. If he only didn't seem so familiar to her, she might have an easier time helping him.
The Good: Violet has been through intense heartache ever since The Disappointment, and I think in some way we can all relate to her pain. But, like many a wonderful heroine, Violet doesn't allow herself to be lost in the pain. She runs away to Spindle Cove, yes, but it's more of a tactical retreat than a true desertion. She's incredibly brilliant and her ability to quickly learn new things has created superb survival skills. Skills she readily uses to get to the bottom of the stranger's purpose in crashing that party (and really, I think that's the ultimate in party crashing, don't you?). The stranger's secrets are as intriguing as they are believable - to both Violet and the reader. And most importantly, Violet demonstrates how a woman of her time can be a survivor without relying on another man.
The Bad: I absolutely loved this novella, but I really wanted more. I can't say this is a complaint, however, because the story was well-written, the plot laid out nicely, and there was just enough sprinkling in about the Spindle Cove series to make me want to devour the others. So the "bad" thing about this book is I can't truly find something to complain about. For shame!
The Wrap-Up: Once Upon a Winter's Eve is a story of lost love, second chances, and moving forward when life doesn't happen as you'd hoped. Mistakes are made, chances are taken, and our heroine finds love when she least expects it. As I said on twitter last night, Tessa Dare weaves a tale that's enchanting, dreamy, exciting, and deliriously romantic - a bit like how I'd imagine dancing the quadrille on clouds would be. Definitely worth the time and money (it's $0.79 to $0.99 depending on where you purchase it) and I give it 5 stars, without reservation!
Full Disclosure: The copy of this book was provided by Tessa Dare, herself (though I can't recall if it was for the purposes of a review or not). Though I have met the author in person at RWA Nationals - she's a really awesomely cool person, btw - I am relieved to say her personality was never factored into the rating given. Because it was that good. Objectivity is sometimes difficult for readers, reviewers, and fellow writers, especially if we've actually met the authors in question, but this time it was easy. Additionally, I receive zero kickbacks from the author, publisher, or marketplaces these eBooks are sold for utilizing any of the links supplied on this site.

Not appropriate to the period and illogical regardless of time frame. H has seduced the virginal h a year before the story begins--a one-night stand--then disappears without a word or a note for a year. Was he kidnapped or prevented from leaving a note? Nah, he was planning to leave before he seduced her. So he's a cad. Even a contemporary h would be ticked off, but not our society miss. She's thrilled to see him--though not sure she recognizes him, the "boy next door" she grew up with and has had a crush on since she was a young child. I guess she never really looked at him? And doesn't know his voice? Hey, his hair's longer and his clothes are dirty, how could she be expected to recognize him? <snort>
He's been spying for the government (Napoleonic War) but decided to drop everything to go see her. Without authorization. Without a cover story. In front of a whole town full of witnesses. Fearing imminent discovery, they run. But detour to her room at the (fully-inhabited) inn to make noisy love. Oddly, no one hears or sees a thing. And off he goes after their second one night stand.
After the war, he returns and asks her to become a spy. Why? Napoleon hasn't escaped yet...but just in case, they'll go to France while telling their family they're going to South America. What?!? And just a quickie wedding. Yeah, that won't seem odd to their aristocratic families...
Ridiculous.

As always, Tessa Dare's writing is very good. However, what drew me to the book--clever wallflower heroine and a sudden romance--didn't turn out to be the heart of the book. I don't want to give a spoiler but the focus was much less fun for me making it a ho hum read.

It just wasn't long enough. I would have liked to have more details about her trip back to London, her decision for a more risque wardrobe. His excitement to tell her about his plans and perhaps his nerves over her acceptance or not. But.... It was a Fun Escapade.

A very short story told with charm and humor. They've both changed so much in the last year, can they still find happiness together? I recommend this book about Violet & Christian's love story if you're already a Spindle Cove enthusiast.

This book wraps you up in the characters love affair and you feel what Violet feels as she's reunited with her love. Almost makes you want to take a vacation to the country, meet a handsome spy, fall in love, secretly Marry and lead a double life

This was a nice evening read. I wish it didn't end so soon. I truly enjoyed the characters and was worried for them as they were dashing through town. Add it to your reader for a long ride or a few hours of escape.

Tessa Dare is one of those authors like Dick Francis or Dean Koontz - if you love one of her books, you just keep waiting for the next because you know every book is going to deliver! And this one is no exception.

I didn't have time to connect with either of the lead characters before the end of the story, and they have a lot of back story that just couldn't be covered. The Spindle Cove series is great, but this one feels more like a throw away.

Well, I'm back! When are these authors going to wake up and see that the book readers who have been with them for years are being disrespected by the kindle books that are not published in print at the same time. Some of us do not have a kindle nor do we want one. Do the publishing houses want to go to all electronic books? If so this is sad. I do not have to read your books Tessa so far I have read all the books on your web site but I would not die if I did not read another one hey it would save me money. These Authors need to wake up and see all the support their book fans are giving. If this Kindle is in another book I'd like to know!
