I read this book over the summer for our summer reading project. The book is about Sam Gribley who runs away to the mountains. He learns to make a fire, what to eat and how to take care of himself. He makes new friends: Bando, Frightful, the Baron Weasel. I would recommend this book for everyone as it is easy to read, full of adventure, full of survival skills and nature. I like stories about animals and nature.

My opinion of My Side of the Mountain is that it was one of the best books I have ever read. The recomendation age I think is good is for people 9 years old and up.One reason why I would recomend it for people 9 years of age and up is because their is a lot of adult vocabulary that younger kids wouldn't understand. If I could give this book a rating from 1-10 I would give it a 10 because the author really catches your attention,so you don't want to put the book down .

I remember as kid growing up first reading this book. It is one of those wonderful stories that has stayed with me my whole life. Growing up in the north I could really relate to the character and often dreamed of doing what he did. It is a wonderful story and now that my son is approaching the age at which I read this book, I would also like to share it with him. There are those few books like teachers that stay with a person they're whole life. I would recommend this book highly.

Do you like adventure? Well if you do this is a book for you. It is about a boy that ran away from home because his house was too crowded. He went to live in the mountains. If you read this book you can find out if he stays alive. You also can learn how to make a fire out of scrap wood. Read and find out if pepole will find him in the mountains or does he stay there forever. This book is recommended for pepole that like adventure.

This is what I call a "must-read" for anyone. I first read it and read it many times over as a boy in a small town in Virginia. I must have checked it out 5 times at least. It is a story that has "inspired" my retirement dream of living on the side of a hill somewhere, far from the lights, sirens and bustle that make up so much of our lives today. It will be a joy to have the "wild things" as neighbors and be able to, even if just for a moment each day be able to be silent, to feel the energy of this planet flow around me. If you have a son ( not excluding daughters of course...but) if you have a boy you must expose him to this book. I bought a copy for mine when he was 10....He loved it!

Before I read this book I looked at nature a different way.I didn't know one survival tip. Now I know alot and I'm looking at nature as a place to live.It isn't just a free time book, it's a good to read anytime. It's better than the sequel, & most other books. It shows bravery, wisdom, inspiration and ,for me humor. I'm lucky this site has it because I can't find it anywere else.I recomend you read this book, it's crushal to your health!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know this review is one of many but I need to add my thoughts to it. This book was special to me when I was a boy. No matter what was happening in my life I FELT SAFE up on the Mt with the lead character. My boy is three but I cannot wait until he is old enough to hear and understand the book. I think that my love and appreciation for things outside "civilized lands) com partially from this work. Peace, Love, and Honor

My side of the Mountain is a story of a run away, thirteen-year-old boy, Sam, from New York who runs from his family to prove to his dad that he can survive in the wilderness. He also says that he can live and stay there in the Catskill Mountains where his great-grandfather use to live. He hitch-hikes over to the mountains and finds his great-grandfather's ranch. The house is so messed up he has to make himself a home in the forest. When he is making a house in a tree he steals a baby falcon from its mother and trains it like he always wanted to. Fearful, Sams pet falcon, goes up to be trained and very trustworthy to Sam. Sam finds himself with other people in the forest that come and go for sight seeing. Sam and Fearful learn to survive and stay protected from other dangerous animals and humans. Sam and Fearful have scary and wild adventure living at Catskill Mountains.
The book, My Side of the Mountain, was a very so-so book. It didn't have any high or low points it was just how to survive in the wilderness. Sam, the child in the book, knows how to survive, he knows how to do everything and he's only thirteen-years-old. There's not alot of action in the book but, alot of survival skill stuff. I don't think I would read the book again because it got boring after awhile. It was pretty much the same things throughout the whole story find food, stay warm, work on something, and sleep. That was really interesting (not really). I would recommend this book to thirteen-year-olds who like the wilderness. I give this book three stars for have a good plot but, not a very good story itself.

Although I am now a 41 year old neurosurgeon, this book had a profound influence on the course of my life. I say that with all sincerity, and do not mean to sound sappy. My teacher read it to us when I was in the 6th grade, in 1973. I read it again the next year. It so captured my imagination, that I begain reading everything I could on wilderness survival, which led me to a backpacking book. The latter further piqued my interest in the outdoors, and I joined the Boy Scouts, soley to go on a backpacking trip to northern New Mexico, to Philmont Scout Ranch. Afterward, I became an Eagle Scout, and a straight A student, eventually going to medical school, while working summers at Philmont. Today, I spend my time in the outdoors, practicing catch and release fly fishing. I plan to buy this for my kids, and someday take them to the Catskills for vacation, including a little fly fishing on the West Branch of the Delaware River, which runs through Delhi! If you are a kid, and have an imagination, this book will capture it. If you're as lucky as me, it might just change your life, too.

My favorite part of the book is that Sam lives on his own. I like this part because I like to hunt, fish and be outside in the woods. I didn't think there was a bad part in the book. I liked it all.

My favorite character is probably Sam because his likes the things I like. I recommend this book for 9,10,11,12,and older for this book. I think this because it is a longer book and you have to be able to understand parts in the book.

I just finished My Side of the Mountain! It was written by Jean George. I would give it 5 out of 5 stars! It's about a boy named Sam Gribley. He's living in the wild in the Catskills Mountains. Sam has a pet falcon named Frightful. Sam lives in a hollowed out tree. He meets a man named Bando and a reporter named Matt. In the end Sam's family comes to live with him. This is a great book, so I hope you can read it!

I reccomend this book to anyone who loves the outdoors. This book describes the adventure of a young boy who risks it all and runs away from home to live, and survive, in the wilderness on his own. He uses his determination and his knowledge of nature to keep himself alive and comfortable on the side of one of the Catskill mountains. If Jean Craighead George didn't actually live this adventure I will be very surprised. A supurbly written book!

I read this book back when I was 10. I simply loved the book. In fact, all my brothers read it too, and they liked it just as much as I. I highly recommend this book, and I can hardly wait until I have a son around that age to give this book as a gift.
The book challenges your imagination and increases your desire to go outside and explore. In today's world where everything seems to involve television or computers, this book is the perfect solution to change that.

In "My Side of the Mountain," a boy named Sam Gribley runs away from home. He goes to his grandfather's old farm and hollows out a Hemlock tree. He survives by eating venison, different plants, and fish. During his adventure, he meets a few friends. One friend, named "Bando", met Sam while he was lost. He got to know Sam and then came back for. Christmas. To Sam's surprise, his dad came to visit during Christmas day. Bando and Sam's dad stayed for a few days, but soon had to leave. Bando had to go back to teaching and his dad had to go back to the house and feed the family. After they left, Sam stayed at the old Gribley farm for a few months during a snow/ice storm. His dad came back when the storm cleared and had some interesting news for Sam. You'll have to read to find out!!!!!
This was my favorite book because I like camping. It has a lot of interesting facts about camping such as: how to cook food, how to make a fishing hook, and how to make specific traps to catch game. I would defiantly recommend this book to people who camp. I believe that this book was good overall, but needs a few more climaxes.

Hey, Kathleen here telling you about this awesome book My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George that I give five stars. It is about this eleven year old boy named Sam Gribley. He is just sick and tired about living in his very crowded apartment building. He decides to run away to the Catskill Mountains to find his great-grandfathers land marked by the word "GRIBLEY" carved in to a tree. I just thought it was so intriguing to read about his strong will to survive and prove to everyone that yes, he can do it.

In the book he lives in a hallowed out hemlock tree that he burned out himself it was about six feet in diameter. He mad a bed of ash slats covered with deer skin and a fire place of clay and stone. He used notches in an aspen poll as a calendar. He eats nuts and berries and things made with acorn flour. For fishing he whittled a strong stick with a sharp point on one end and an angled cut at the other then took another strong stick and cut and angled end on it too. He tied both angled ends together with tree bark and had him self a fishing hook.

This book is only one of three and if you like it I highly recommend reading the others. They are: On the Far Side of the Mountain and Frightful's Mountain. I personally loved this book and i hope you can enjoy it too.

As former wildlife rehabilitators of birds of prey, my wife & I now retirement age, completely enjoyed the narative and are amazed at the the accuracy and depth of JCG's facts. Truely a heart warming trilogy in todays not so warm world. JCG has been given a great gift to combine depth of knowledge and story telling. We are fans of hers and now have read many of her books.
I mentioned this book to the very best rehabber we know & she was so happy to have the title as she had forgotten it & read it when she was 11. Said today it has influenced her life ever since, a very highly educated abd sophisticated woman who lives in the woods. As a child, her father would drop them off in the Adirondack woods, with meger supplies, a section map etc, and then pick them up at a pre-arranged spot 3 or more days later. This went on till she was sixteen. Now she will purchase & pass this trilogy on to her grandson. Ractions from others to whom I have introduced this series include, from a VP of a multi billion corp. who was fascinated with it, finished it quickly and gave it to the son of his "Boss" and wants his report back. etc etc.

I liked your book but I would not want to read it again.I would not read it again because it is boring. Some parts are boring and some parts are exciting in the book. The part that is boring in the book is when Frightful the falcon teaches another falcon to fly. That part was very boring. The part that is really exciting is when Sam the main character runs to the willderness. That part is really exciting.Your book was good but mabey not good enough.

I liked the book but the thing I disliked was why did Sam run off. This book is a great one if you like survivor stories. If you wanna know does it match up to other survior stories like Hatchet and The Cay I would pick the other ones first, but this book is still good. It is amazing how he takes simple plants like cattail roots and pennroyal and makes them his everyday dinner and tea. If you like survivor stories this is a book to consider.

I think that people who love exciting stories or stories that make your heart pound five times faster should read this book. Jean Craighead George's book circles around Sam Gribley, a boy who is tired of the city life. Sam leaves his home to go where his grandfather once lived. On his way he meets his new companion for life and deals with challenges that he never had to face in the city. This book earns a five star rating because it is mind-boggling and mysterious as well as daunting and delightful.

well the book starts out with a wonderful beginning that makes you want to find out what is next until you reach the end of the book. the plot is excellent about how a boy runs away to the catskill mountains from his home in new york with some string flint & steel and $40. Sam(the runaway boys' name) learns to live in the wild all by him self for a year and 4 months , in that time he has learned to cook and make a home out of nature.

This book was given to me and my class in Grade Six. In the beginning everyone thought it was going to be boring. Once we started to read it we realized it was great. After that our teacher took us outside to try and make some of the tools Sam used. Our class even spent the night in the woods to learn how Sam felt. We all had a terrific time and began to look at the book differently. It wasn't just make-believe, but realistic situations.

My Side of the Mountain is about a determined boy named Sam who thinks he can do anything. Only armed with flint and steel and a strong heart he get's ready to to test his survival skills in the Catskills. But will he survive with Winter creeping up on him?
This is a unrealistic book because everything goes Sam's way. For example, when he he makes his house NOTHING goes wrong. I also think this is unrealistic because there are hungry bears that would be attracted to his food. All in all I don't recommend this book.

My Side of the Mountian is an extraordinary book written by Jean Craighead George.A boy named Sam Gribley decided to run away from the city. Nobody believed he would do it, but he did. Sam built a house, found a stream, and found food. But Sam is lonely so he captures a peregrine falcon and trains it to get him food and so he's not so lonely. I recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure books. This book is as good as Hatchet.

"My Side of the Mountain" by: Jean Craighead George, is a very adventurous book. I had just finished reading it with my class this week. Sam Gribley, the main character, runs away from home, because he is tired of living with nine siblings. I enjoyed this book, because it grabs your attention throughout the whole story. If you are looking for a good book to read I recommend this one.

"My Side of the Mountain" is a great book! Two things I didn't like about it was: 1.it was to much of a school book AND 2.what sam did could never happen these days.parents would never let their kids run away.also, kids these days could never make a fire from flint and steel and kill rabbits and stuff and live with a falcon.it could NEVER happen!at least i couldn't do that!
besides those two things,it was a great book.go buy it!!

My Side of the Mountain is by Jean Craighead George. It is a great book. It is about a boy named Sam Gribley who runs away into the Catskills Mountains to live his own life. Sam finds a tree and makes his home out of it with an ax. After he built his home he climbs a cliff to get a falcon. Sam names the falcon Frightful. He gets the falcon because he wants to catch his food easier. If you like adventure this is the book to read.

My Side of the Mountain was an ok book.It would have been better if Sam the main character)wasn't such a superman. He could do anything, and he is only 11 years old!I would recomend this book to third graders to fifth graders.I probably wouldn't read it again, beacause it's sort of like this...
you read it once, it's pretty good, you read it twice, it gets a little boring, you read it three times,it's just really boring!!!

I found My Side of the Mountain to be a entertaining and a pretty well written book, or at least uniquely written. It is about a boy who decides to move off by himself to live in his ancestor's old farm that's over grown and been abandoned for several years. The book is told in first person perspective by the boy himself. This creates the effect of you, the reader, reading the boy's journal of what he has done during his stay on his ancestor's farm.
I did think that the book should have less detail, such as the recipe for acorn pancakes, and more detail on the action and events. The author seems more interested in writing how the boy changes during his stay in the wilderness than an actual entertain plot. It is an idea, but it makes the book less entertaining IMHO.
I also found the ending to be a bit lacking, and kind of dumb, though I won't spoil it for you here. I just think that the ending happened to suddenly and without very much detail and I think it needs to be explained a little bit more. But you need to read it to understand what I'm trying to tell you.
Over all, the book is a good read for kids and preteens, but high school students may find it boring. But I still recommend picking it up for something a little different.

I absolutely loved this story as a child. I still love this story. However, I was one of the boys who planned to copy the character in this book. If I had I probably would have ended up being dead. That said, I enjoyed many wonderful hours as a fifth grader contemplating my GREAT ADVENTURE! I spent hours poring over atlases and planning just where in my state's forests that I would be living and building my home. I read numerous books on survival in wilderness conditions. I practiced with a fire bow and drill. I even cleaned & tanned a fresh roadkill raccoon and made a hat out of it. The time I spent with this story and the dreams this story inspired for me are some of my fondest childhood memories.

My opinion of the book... There were some parts of it that wasn't making sense to me, but the rest was good.I recomend this book to people who like to read, and might have thought they wanted to run away. This book is a very specific, realistic, awsome book to read. When you pick up this book you can't put it down. From the time I picked up this book I felt it was a winner, and as a matter of fact it won a Newberry Honor Award.

I am currently a junior in high school, and this book stands as one of my all time favorites. I remember my Mom giving it to me when I was in elementary school, and me putting off reading it for the longest time because it seemed like a "boring book" however when I started to read the first few pages, I was hooked the rest of the way. Sam's adventures were such a great tale of freedom and self reliance while also serving as a representation of the self made man and the American dream. The sense of progress and accomplishment Sam gets when he completes a task is so satisfying and gives a good sense of progression. I know that I will be reading this to my children when I am older, and would recomend it to readers of any age.

The book "My Side of the Mountain" was a lot of fun to read. This book was full of adventures and thrills. I would definately recommend this book to kids of my age group. I am twelve years old and I think other twelve year olds would relate to this book well. They would relate to this book because the boy in this book is 12 and 13 years old and what he does would be possible for other boys to do. This book is about a boy in a large family who ran away because his house is too crowded and no one believed that he would run away. Because his father doubted that he would run away for more than one day, he decided to run away. The characters name is Sam Gribley. He is from New York and ran away to the Catskill Mountains. He is away from home for about 9 months. While he was out there he met some people and went to different places on the way. I like how he was very independent and built a house in a tree. Sam is very talented because he was able to capture and train a falcon, catch his own food, make his own dishes and silverware and start fires. Some of the people he met in the mountain sound like people you would meet today. There was a character named Gambo who was a teacher, but who Sam thought was a theif. There was also a character named Matt, he was a boy who worked for the New York Gazette, and he was in the mountain looking for the "wild boy". The reason he was looking for Sam was because Sam had become famous and known as the "wild boy", because he was living in the mountain and no one knew who he was. One day he heard a voice calling his name and he knew at once that it was his father. He ran down the mountain to greet him, and his father said that he was famous in New York. His dad stayed with him for a couple of nights and shared with him what he had done. The ending was unexpected and you should read this book to find out!

Sam Gribley wants to run away from city life. He takes $40, some clothes, and some tools for building. Once he gets deep enough into the Catskill Mountains, he starts looking for his great-grandfather's old house. He finds the house's frame covered in mold. To have a place to stay warm before the weather changes, he burns out the trunk of a large hemlock and considers it "home." How does he survive with no fire, food or tools? Sam learns how to make a fire; he learns to make the tools from a man he met, he fishes, and traps animals for food. He captures a baby falcon and names her Frightful. He also meets new people. "Bando," an English professor who teaches in New York, "Mr. Jacket," a boy he meets in the woods, and Matt, an apprentice for the New Yorker.

If you haven't read one of Jean Craighead George's books, this is an excellent place to start. You will enjoy this book, plus there are two more books in this series. You can explore the wonders of nature when you read this book. My Side of the Mountain teaches kids why you shouldn't run away from home.

This book was fun to read because It was talking about a boy out in the trees and in the mountains. He fixed an old shelter outside the mountains, and he had some people coming into the shelter to stay there for one or two days with him. That boy was living out in the mountains and his family found him, and gave him food and other things to live in the mountains. And his dad fixed his shelter while his son went back.

Who wouldn't want to do this?

A great novel about an independent boy living on his own off the land. It is hard to find good literature for boys. I grew up with "Anne of Green Gables" and the Noel Streatfield books - but those aren't going to appeal to boys.

This book would make an excellent gift for any boy. Read it out loud to your family.

Sam runs away from home to the Catskill Mountains, because he isnt happy with his eight brothers and sisters. He is too crowded. He burns out a tree to live in. He sees all the animals of the forest storing up food for the winter. He thinks he doesnt have enough food to feed himself through the winter. Sam trains a duck hawk to catch food for him. Her name is Frightful. Sam meets an English teacher. He heard sirens before he met him, so he thought he was a bandit. He called him Bando. Bando brings Sam newspaper clippings. They are all about a wild boy living in the mountains surviving off of nuts, berries, and deer meat. Bando wants to make a guest house by burning out another tree, because he is always there visiting Sam and sleeping in his bed. Sam doesnt like this idea but cant say no to his best friend. Will Sam make a home that he is content with? Sam hears all these noises in the woods. The sound of snapping branches gets closer and closer. He thinks someone is coming to take him home. I recommend this book to all people who like nature and adventures, because it takes place in the mountains.

The book My Side of the Mountain, is about a young boy named Sam Gribley who ran away from home to the old, family farm. He took with him a penknife, a ball of card, an ax, and some flint and steel. These are the only items he had to survive with. If you like the book Julie of the Wolves you should like this book too. This is a good book that kids and adults alike will surely enjoy.

My side of the mountain is an exciting book about a young boy named Sam Gribley. Sam is a boy that gets tired of living at home so he runs away to his grandpa's farm that has been abanded for the last 3 centuries. Sam gets to the farm by hitchhiking a ride from a truck driver that is going through the town were the old farm is located. Once in the town he asks the librarian were the farm is located, and after searching for hours they find the farm and Sam leaves the town to go to the farm. Sam learns to build a fire with flint and stone, live off the land, and build a house out of an old tree. He also catches a falcon and teaches it to help him hunt for food. While Sam is living in the hills he has many visitors that come and find out about him, and there are hunters in the hills that go home and tell the media that there is a boy in the hills that is stealing there deer. With all of these events happening he starts to get more media attention, and people trying to find him, including his family. I encourage this book for all ages of readers who are seeking an adventure.

I am on my third reading of My Side of the Mountain (first as a fifth grader, then with my first son, and now with my second son) and I'm enjoying it as much as the first time. In fact, I might be enjoying it a little more. Although we live on the dividing line between the city and "the county," we're really urban dwellers. This book excited my Playstation/basketball playing semi-urban kids about nature. They looked at hikes and scouts in a new way. In fact, what was most frightening about the book was the time spent alone.
I highly recommend this as a reader, parent and teacher. In fact, I've used passages with my college ESL classes and they've gone on to buy the book and read the whole thing!

I just finished My Side Of the Mountain. I will give it 4 out of 5 stars because, it is about survival. There is a nice boy named Sam. He only brought a penknife, a ball of cord, an ax, some flint of steel, and 40$. He lives in a hollowed out tree, because he lived in a New York apartment, then he ran away from the apartment, after, he lives on a mountain on the Gribley's farm.

Will Sam survive?

Read this book to find out.

This book was about a boy who ran away from home and had to survive by nature. When he needs help he turns to a local librarian on the Catskill Mountains. The librarian helps him by showing him a book of plants that are pisonous and edible. Even though I read this book last year it still is pretty clear to me.I only read it because my fourth grade teacher made the whole class read it. I'm glad she did!

My Side of the Mountain

By Jean Craighead George

This is a survival and adventure book. It has many unexpected parts. The boy, Sam Gribley, and his pet falcan, Frightful, have to survive on thier own after Sam runs away to the old, family farm. While Sam was hiking he met and made an interesting new friend. I enjoyed learning tips on how to survive in the wilderness. I recommend this book to kids who like survival and adventure books.

I thing that this book was fabulous. The desriptions pulled me right into the book. It felt Like I was living in the mountains with him. I would've rated this book better but in some parts it was a little confusing with all of the characters. I think people who love action and people who like to think "What's gonna happen next" at the end of the chapter have to read this thrilling book ...

This book was really a great book because it partly related related to me because I live in the city and I have wished that my family would move to the country. I was not as desperate as him because my family owns a house in the country so I have never thought of running away before. This book is really captivating and it was also a page-turner. I highly recommend this book to any kind of reader.

I really loved this book. It was great, but I wish George hadn't done confusing things like have the begining be in the present, the middle in the past, and then the end in the present again. I read this book as a child. Reading this book as an adult brought the inner child back to life. I think everyone thinks of ditching society one time or another. I don't think I could live on Sam's diet or live in the hollow of a tree in real life, but through out the story you feel as if you did. Very few books today can actually make you feel a part of the story. The book also tells which plants are edible in the wild. This book should be recommended for every child to read. So much to learn in it about nature, falcons, plants, and survival itself. Great book.

We as a class had to read "My side of the Mountain" and then give a report on it. I did not find the book very interesting for myself because I enjoy historical books, My favorite author is Mary Pope Ausborn.
But, if you like nature, it would be a good book for you. As an adult, I found "My Side of the Mountain" slow, unrealistic, naive, and all those other adult things, but I canremember reading a number of books of this survivalist/naturalist genre as a child and being utterly enthralled. I believe that this is a book that will turn many children's imaginations in a direction hitherto unthought of. It will also serve as a healthy safety valve to release some of children's pent-up desire for freedom through their friend Sam.

As I say in my title, it was okay. I'd actually say more of a 3 and half than a four. The book is about a boy who ran away from home and decided to live in the woods. There just isn't enough action in it to keep me enthrawlled.

This story is about a 13-year-old boy. He lived in Delhi, N.Y, and Sam, the main character, is too crowded in life. He has 6 siblings. So Sam decided to run away into the Catskill Mts. The next day he goes out wondering where to sleep, "Where should I sleep?" he asks himself". Suddenly he had an idea! Maybe if he could burn the inside he could have a home, and he did. From the day he starts he works very hard until it's done. One day Sam saw a falcon, and decided to follow it. It led to a cliff. A nest was at the top. So he climbs up and gets a falcon; he names her Frightful. He makes a fireplace, bowls, and cups. Out of clay. Will Sam ever go home to his family, or stay at the place he loves? I highly recommend My Side of the Mountain all readers, because it is suspenseful and exciting. By Kevin

A summery of the Newbury honors wining book my side of the mountain, by Jean Creighead George. I found this book to be a very venturous as well as entertaining. The main character of this book is a boy by the name of Sam Gribley, he is a boy who is tired of living at home in crowded New York City. This is where the story begins, Brian runs away from home to the Catskill Mountains to live off of the land. He begins with only a penknife, a ball of cord, an ax, forty dollars, and some flint and steal. He must rely on his integrity and knowledge of the land to survive the many adventures. I especially like this book because I find my self to be an outdoorsman in a few ways, so if you like the outdoors and adventure you should read this book. Not to forget it has a few illustrations on traps and various other survival tactics.

Sam Gribley was sick of living in a cramped apartment with his eight brothers and sisters in New York City. One day he decided he was going to go to the Catskill Mountains to find his grandfater's land. When he found the property he built a house by burning out the inside of a tree. He caught a falcon and named it Frightful. Over time he trained the bird to hunt and made friends with some of the hikers. One of the hikers, whicch Sam called Bando, was a college professor and took a liking to Sam. Him and Sam became good friends and Bando came back to visit on all of his vacations. Sam made it through the tough winter in the Catskill Mountains, but with all of the hikers wandering around would Sam soon be found and put all over the news?

My Side of the Mountain is about this boy named Sam that left home because his family thought he couldn`t go to the Catskill Mountains. He did so and he tried to survive in the wild. He thought at first it was difficult, but when he got halfway it got easier and easier.

I sort of hate this book. I give it a 3 because in the beginning, it's sad. The middle is sort of happy. The end was surprising.

I liked this book because I didn't know what was going to happen next. The book told me about the dangers in the Catskill Mountains. My Side of the Mountain is a great book even if the reader is a little confused at first. This book is about a boy named Sam Gribley who runs away to his Grandfather's old farm in the Catskill Mountains from an overcrowded apartment in New York City. He is tired of the city life and wants to find a new way to live. Taking with him a penknife, and a hatchet, he sets of into the Catskills. There Sam lives in a burnt out hollowed tree, eats deer, crayfish, and rabbit. He meets many people that help him survive in the mountains. He makes many human friends and animal friends as well. But then he must survive a harsh winter in the Catskills. Will Sam survive? To find out read the book My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George.

This book is very interesting it has many detailed sentences, many relationships, it's humurous, and has some funny comments. I would recommend this book to a person who is looking for a story with adventure, animal life, human life, tips on running away, a long story, and a hard relationship.

I think that it's very good compared to another one of her books, Water Sky (which I also reviewed). Jean Craighead George does a decent job on this. There just isn't enough action in it to keep me enthrawlled.

this book was the most adventurous, courageous, and daring!! This was the coolest to read about on how he survived in the wilderness alone by catching his food. I learned many things from this like what plants are edible and some basic tips on surviving in the wilderness. I loved this book.

This book does a really good job of portraying what living off the land would probably be like. I know it came out a while ago, but I just read it recently and I was impressed with how the main character actually knew what he was doing when he hollowed out a tree and made clothes out of deerskin, rather than just winging it. Good stuff.

I like the book because it is interesting and good. I like the way Sam lives in a tree and also how he has a trained falcon name Frightful. I wish the story was a little longer so he could meet more people and have more time with them because he only met three friends.

he used to watch the original movie when he was a kid, over and over again. He's been away from home for a few years, working on a ski slope in CO, so I wanted to send him a bit of 'home'. I know it's a kid's book, but he said he really enjoyed it, and has read it several times. It brought back lots of memories. It's been a story that has stayed with our family for almost 20 years now!

Its been many years since I've read this book. But I can still tell you the story like it was yesterday. I think this was probably the first book I read from front to back. It pulled me into the story. As a young boy I spent my weekends fishing and hunting. This book traveled with me in my backpack like a survival guide. I had to tape the binding because I wore it out. I made the snares and looked for nuts and berries and all that good stuff. I can truthfully say this single book molded a part of me that is still with me today. Encourage your child to read it. After the first few pages they will be hooked. I haven't read the trilogy, but, now that I know it exists I plan to.

I am a sixth grader. I thought My Side of the Mountain was a very good book. It was a very adventurous book. It is about a kid named Sam who has dreamed to run away from home. He found a tree that was big enough for him to live in and he burned out the inside of it to make a house. Sam goes through harsh weather and eats only berrys, turtle soup, and some meat that he hunts for. I loved this book so much and i would recamend this book for people who like adventure books. I would rate this book a five star book because it was so good and there was a lot of intresting things in this book, like what kind of food is good to eat in the woods and what kinds of food isn't so good to eat. I really enjoyed this book. But to find out if Sam makes it through the winter and all the harsh weather you will have to read the book and find out what happens at the end.

I loved this trilogy because I like the outdoors and falcons. They are a great read because it shows examples of how humans can take care of the earth and keep our beautiful animals safe. It teaches you skills you can use if you get lost; what to eat, how to find shelter; etc. Just a wonderful series.

It was a good book because of the tips of surviving in the wilderness. The one I thought was the best was boiling the egg in the water in the leaf. It was cool! Another good tip was grinding baked acorn to make pancakes. It would taste good I think.

In My Side of the Mountain, Sam leaves the city and goes to a forest on a mountain to live off the land. My favorite thing in the book is that he gets a pet falcon named Frightful. What I don't like is that he gets found out. At the end, his family comes to live with him but they don't live in Hemlock trees, they build a house out of wood. I recommend this book highly to all my friends!

This review comes from my 10-year-old son, Dylan. I'm typing exactly as he wrote.
"I think that 'My Side Of The Mountain' is a great book because of the relationship between Sam and the Catskills. The plot is great, but the way he encounters Frightful was horrible. I also like how the story ends.
The only thing I didn't like too much was the reason Sam ran away. Also, the organization of the book is a little bit complicated - with the chapters being in a weird order.
Overall is a VERY good book and I can't wait to read the sequel."

This book is excellent reading. Not only is the writing dead-on, the story is fantastic. Sam's independence, inventiveness, and perseverence is inspiring for kids, and the ending is perfect (I won't spoil it).

I have my students read this (and The Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankenweiler) every year, and then they do a project explaining how they would cope if they had to go live someplace exotic by themselves for a year (such as a space colony, a deserted island, etc.)

I did not like this book very much and the four ohter people I read it with didn't enjoy it either. The story didn't keep my interest and when I was reading it I would always daydream. In the story he did the same thing almost everyday becuse there isn't much to do when you are in the forest. I didn't not like the way it ended it was not very exciting. I thuoght the book had a weird storyline because the father didn't even bother saying no when he decided to run away. This is why I would give this book one star.

A great book I remember reading when I was in grade school. I am now sharing it with my daughter and we both love it. It has a much more "real life" feel than a lot of the adventure literature out there now. It seems we should be able to go find Gribly farm.

"My Side of the Mountain" is my favorite of my mom's books. I wasn't much of a reader as a kid and I think "My Side" was the first book I ever read. I've met so many biologists whose careers have been launched or influenced by this book. Her illustrations are quite good too; she has a knack for drawing animals and kids! I grew up with drawings of Sam and Frightful hanging about the house, they are some of her best work. Nice work Mom!

I read this book several dozen times when I was a kid, vicariously living my dream of making it in the wild. Some kids are bored with it (it goes into quite a bit of detail, and is slow-paced), but others love it. It tends to interest kids with a lot of imagination or an inclination to be a writer. The sequels don't hold a candle to the original.

This was one of the best books that I had ever read. I could not put it down. I hardly ever got bored, it was so adventureus. How Sam lived off the berries, nuts, deer, and some plants and also fish and mussels. He met a college professor at his tree (that he lives in) and Bando (the man he met)ended up staying for christmas. He would bring up the news articles about the wild boy (Sam) so sam could read them. They were trying to find him to take him home (COPS). If you would like to find out the ending, read this book.
