Excellent historical recipes adapted for the modern kitchen. Loved the cinnamon scone and the goat cheese and bacon tarts. Beautifully photographed and it was wonderful to have excerpts from the books with each recipe. The author gives excellent directions and cooking tips. Would highly recommend this cookbook to anyone wanting to explore the tastes of Scotland. For Outlander fans, it's a just another wonderful way to connect with the story of Jamie and Claire.

This is a wonderful cookbook for a number of reasons. First, the recipes that I have made have turned out to be delicious. Some of the recipes are like those handed down on my mother's side. I was happy to see many of the recipes have oatmeal in them and they taste like the dishes my mother made. I like some of the drinks because I remember having some of them but did not know how to make them. Finally, I love the brief passages from the books. I am celebrating my heritage making some of these recipes. The price of this book on the store is very reasonable. I have paid a lot more for cookbooks that did not meet my expectations.

Wonderful book! Especially for the fans who are foodies too. It will make a great gift also. I love to old world recipes with a modern twist, some remind me of home. I love how every recipe has a story. Truly a wonderful project by this chef. I have made the Fraser jam so far and it was delicious. I gave it as a gift and I used it in a classic Victoria sponge cake, it was perfect for it, so much beautiful summer flavor.

Not quite as I expected, a little lacking in the stories, I thought. I really didn't need mine. And I bought one for my chef friend, since he's from Scotland, but his stomach cancer has taken away his joy for cooking. So I returned them.

I am a HUGE Diana Gabaldon fan, and I've been in love with Jamie Fraser since the first Outlander reading. This cookbook leads me back to the detail that is so mesmerizing in Diana's books, the clothing, the homes, the decor, the personalities of the Scotts, the history, the feasts--referring to passages in the book makes all of it ever more real. I'm busy reading the book now, and will try a recipe soon. Can't wait!

I'm not a cook, or baker. I bought it because I love the series so much, and bought one for my friend who has read all of Outlander too. The pictures are beautiful and the descriptions and recipes are unique and interesting to read.

A great book but I didn't keep either it or the replacement one sent me because they have been stored improperly. The pages have picked up dampness, resulting in rippled top and bottom edges for each page. As I was planning to give it as a gift, I could not keep either copy as each was damaged and unsuitable for gift-giving.

WOW! What a beautiful book! The recipes are easy to ready and follow. No un-need footnotes or complicated details. Just great pictures, simple ingredients an directions. I already made Plum Upside Down Cake and have 4 more pages marked for the weekend!

This cookbook is awesome! So far I have only made the Honey-Buttermilk Oat Bread (totally delicious), but I want to make every single recipe! Honestly there is not one that looks unappealing to me or like I wouldn't want to make it! Reading through it made me want to read the entire series again; and I loved the history and explanations that Theresa added on almost every recipe. Highly recommend for every Outlander fan!! (If you are only a tv show fan or haven't read the entire series yet be prepared for spoilers because each recipe has an excerpt from one of the books!)

This is my new favorite cookbook! I'm a fan of Outlander (I've only read the first two books so far), but more than that I'm a fan of good food, British/Scottish food, and historic recipes. But the problem with historic recipes is that they're often to suit a taste no longer popular (or existent), or to cover the rancidness of an ingredient. So much though I love collecting them and making them, I usually don't want to eat them. That's where this cookbook shines- the recipes are all suited to a modern pallet, and any historic ones have been gently adapted to be more approachable. The author says it right in the intro (this may be the first cookbook I've read cover to cover, like a novel)- these recipes are historic, modern, and fantastical. And they ALL look and sound amazing.

I love that she included quotes from the books with each, which gives a context for the inspiration. I also love that she includes tips with each, for substitutions, variations, and other useful information (it makes each recipe feel even more approachable, and customizable).

Nothing in here calls for ingredients you'd have to special order (like a pig's head) or can only buy in bulk despite using a tiny amount, or have never heard of in your life. What a nice change from the more 'precious' homestyle cookbooks I've found! (which I love in concept, but they're totally impractical). And all of the cooking techniques are basic and simple- I truly felt like I could make everything in this book. And wanted to. Despite my LEAP diet and food allergies, I dog-eared 2/3 of the recipes, to make later.

And the photos! Beautiful, full-color, styled photos of every dish (despite the type or size). I love when a cookbook has photos, which I use as a general guide to whether or not I messed up in making it. And as inspiration- humans are a visual species, after all.

The organization of the recipes is not your typical cookbook organization, but it worked well. And there felt like plenty of recipes in every category (drinks, desserts, side dishes, appetizers, vegetarian mains, meat mains, etc.) so every taste and dietary restriction can be appeased. I'm sure this is an excellent resource for throwing Outlander watching parties with food. I plan on making something out of it every two weeks or so, just because. :)

my paternal grandmother was a Scottish immigrant, directly from Barra in the Outer Hebrides. I was an occasional fan of the Outlander TV series as well as the first novel too. Recently, I found myself browsing through a local bookstore when I stumbled on this little hardcover. I'm a bit disappointed in myself for paying the full $35 price in the brick-n-mortar bookstore when I could've paid much less on the store.

I can say, without hesitation, these recipes are authentic in every way. The vast majority of the recipes in this cookbook are exactly the kinds of thing eaten by Scots...at least the Hebrideans. Scotland is just like many countries, the cuisine varies by geographical regions.

I have prepared a couple of these recipes that are very easy to follow, this cookbook is very well-written and many of the recipes are laid out step-by-step for inexperienced cooks.

My personal favorite is called Mrs Fitzgibbons Overnight Parritch, it's a really nice variation on oatmeal with steel-cut oats. My wife and I can eat this for breakfast at 0800 and I don't get hungry again for 5-6 hours later. It's easy to see why this porridge was a Scottish favorite.

I have a huge collection of cookbooks and my hubby has convinced me to get them from the library and try a few recipes before buying. Well, I got this from the library last week and have already tried several recipes and they are excellent. For the novice cook, steps are broken down so anyone could make them. For those of us more experienced these are interesting foods we may never have tried or flavor combinations that are unique. Many recipes use ingredients we already have on hand in the standard pantry which is refreshing. I hate buying a new ingredient I only use for one dish! Definitely a must have for any cook who enjoys historical fiction and/or fascination with how people could possibly cook and eat before refrigerators, supermarkets and electric ranges!

I am addicted to this cookbook. I have made something out of it every week for the past several weeks. Yesterday it was the Salted Chocolate Pretzel Balls. Some of the recipes are a wee bit complicated, but I blame myself for not having half-moon bridies. That's on me, not the cookbook. Everything I've made so far has come out delicious and a few I have made more than once.

The directions are clear, concise, and each ties nicely with a scene from the Outlander books. The chef herself is quite kind on Twitter and Facebook, offering tips and sharing our posts of our attempts at her "receipts," to quote the redoubtable Mrs. Bug.

If you consider yourself an Outlander fan, this book is a must for your collections.

Got this beautiful and amazing book for Christmas and really can't put it down! I love the adaptation of food & recipes derived from the Outlander series of books. Really enjoyed reading the intros from the author and from Diana Gabaldon not to mention the book excerpts with each recipe. For food lovers, Outlander Kitchen is the perfect companion to this series, as the recipes are very easy to follow with modern ingredients, yet bring the flavors of years past to life.

Everything I've made from this cookbook has been amazing, including the best buttermilk biscuits ever. The recipes are extremely well written and several of them have made my regular recipe list. I love how each recipe is connected to a scene in the Outlander books. Seriously, make those biscuits, they are insane.

I bought this as a gift. Unfortunately, due to busy schedules we have not been able to make any of the recipes. Outlander fan or not, there are some great regional recipes and worth adding to any home-kitchen library.

Having been a long time fan of Diana Gabaldon's books series Outlander, I was seriously looking forward to my copy of Outlander Kitchen arriving in my mailbox. :) And trust me, it did not disappoint! First it is a beautiful book, and the photography is stunning! (Mouthwatering!!) First thing I made from the book is the Shepherd's Pie. My whole family LOVED it! And that hooked me. I've now tried many of the recipes in the book for various occasions and non-occasions and have never had a recipe fail. Best and most fun cookbook I've ever had! Would make a great gift for the Outlander fans out there.

I am not a gifted writer and I am just a home baker. I love love this cookbook. The recipes are tried and true. The directions are easy to follow and the pictures make me what to make every one of these recipes. I plan to start on the first one and work my way to the end. The cover makes you want to take it home right away. You will not be disappointed. We have liked everyone we have tried. Bullrem in Ark.

As a huge Outlander fan and fan of Therese's blog, I knew I'd be happy with this cookbook, but I don't think I realized just how much I'd love it! I'm a novice to middling chef and I've been able to make several recipes with no trouble, and the family loves all of them - Jack Randall's Lavender Fudge is a big hit, as were the Corn Fritters, just to name a couple. Love it!

Love the layout, love the pictures and there are tons of recipes which are easy to follow. I cannot wait to try these, I love sweets so I'm especially looking forward to Black Jack Randall's Dark Chocolate Lavender Fudge!

This book is a must-have for fans of Diana Gabaldon’s OUTLANDER series - and for those who just plain like good food. Because the food you prepare from this book - it’s So Good. Theresa Carle-Sanders writes clear recipes with humor and plenty of variations. The photography is stunning. The only wish I have is that I had the ebook in addition to the cookbook. :-)

i have only tried a few of the recipes but this cookbook is great. there is a variety of dishes inspired by various people and places from the outlander series. the oatcakes are simple to make with a rustic and simplistic taste that transports you. They taste much better with fresh cheese and fruit than expensive store bought gluten free crackers.

I ordered the book and have made 3 items so far- strawberry jam, strawberry jam pies, and cottage pie- all delicious. Ingredients are easy to find at grocery store, recipes are easy to follow and so far I’ve followed the directions completely and everything has turned out great. There are quotes from the series and notes from the chef after each recipe, to help troubleshoot. So far I am looking bing this book.

This book is a MUST HAVE for any Outlander fan (or even those who aren't). Beautiful photos, amazing easy to follow recipes, and wonderful tie-ins to the epic saga of Jamie and Claire. I love the humor that is woven throughout as well. Reading the recipes (with the corresponding excerpts) brought me back to the books and reminded me why I fell in love with this story in the first place. What a wonderful gift idea as well. I'll be purchasing a few more for my sisters!! Money well spent. Kudos to the chef and author!!!!

I won the Outlander Kitchen Cookbook in a raffle, and I can't express how glad I am!! The recipes are easy to follow and delicious, and it is an entertaining read in its own right. Don't let the title fool you about the contents: it's not just Scottish and English recipes. The cookbook is inspired by the entire Gabaldon series, so many American foods are included as well.

Outlander Kitchen: The Official Outlander Companion Cookbook
Theresa Carle-Sanders (Forward by Diana Gabaldon)
Delacorte Press, 2016

A LibraryThing Early Reviewers Book.
My husband and I love to read and cook from cookbooks, we also love the Outlander book series by Diana Gabaldon, therefor this was the perfect choice for us.

The setup of the book is logical, and the table of contents is easy to look through. Each recipe starts with a related quote from one of the books, and the recipes are wonderful. We prepared three of the recipes so far: Short Crust Pastry; Bacon, Asparagus, and Wild Mushroom Omelet; and Jenny's Hare Pie. Each recipe was easy to follow and came out great. In fact, this is the first time that I was able to make a perfect omelet.

I look forward to trying the rest of the recipes in this book. If they are as tasty as the few I already tried, then this will be one of the best cookbooks I own.

5 stars.

Honestly quite a few of these recipes just didn't work. I have had to search online to find other recipes to fix the ones that don't turn out. Although I love the show/books and make a fancy scottish/french/english dish with every episode/meal, I usually only use this book as inspiration and find similar recipes online. We have used most of these recipes from their website but I will say the beef pies are my husband's favorite meal.
