This is a good book to read when you want to read something light and up beat. If you are or were a Mom raising young children some of Erma's antics are sure to remind you of those days. No zombies no guns. Just good fun!

It was fun to re-read some of my favorites from years past. It was also most informative about Erma's private life. I didn't know she was such a lovely person, though I could have guessed it from her columns.

Erma Bombeck had a way of making the mundane chores of life funny. When you read her work, it feels as if she is sitting next to you having coffee while you shell peas for tonight's dinner. When she died, we lost a National Treasure.

I have loved Erma Bombeck forever and always read her column in the paper and all hr books. She tells it like it is with just a slight bit of exageration. I especially loved her Mother's Day column from a long time ago.

This book is so down to earth, funny, and inspirational. Every mother of young children should read it, and older women will look back and remember so many funny things they have forgotten through the years. It would make a great Mother's Day gift.

I have always enjoyed Erma's writing. I like it that this book will be enjoyed by her old fans and introduce her to new fans. She was such a talent is sorely missed. Whenever you are having a bad day, just read something she has written and it will bring a smile to your face.

I forgot how funny Erma can make everyday life. Even if you don't have children and dogs and a crazy household her wry look at the daily pitfalls of life make you see yourself or someone you know in every vignette!

Through the years, Irma Bombeck's newspaper column never failed to make me laugh.
Her descriptions of life were so close to what I was experiencing and she made them so humorous.
This book recapped many of her BEST.

I read Erma's column when I was a struggling housewife and her comments helped me through trying times with her humor and perspective on everyday occurrences. Rereading them brought tears to my eyes.

I loved this book. Erma wrote about every day happenings that you will recognize instantly. While reading the book I got the feeling that Erma must have spied on me! You are left with a lovely feeling that someone understands you. Many were the times I actually laughed out loud. I truly recommend this book to anyone with a sense of humor!

I liked and didn't like parts of this book. It was interesting to read her perspective as someone who wasn't an adult when she was writing and wasn't born for most of the decades. But most of it irked me at the banality of her columns. She had a chance to write intelligent commentary on being a housewife and woman during that time, but for the most part, the main point of her columns was some common, ordinary housewifey thing, like tips on food preparation or handling children or husbands. It was interesting to learn about how people did things back then without computers or technology, but I couldn't stomach reading all of the columns. There was so much women's liberation going on back then, but she squandered her opportunity by taking a high-profile writing job and proliferating the role of women as housewifes and nothing more. I mean, many of her columns were in the 80s! Women over 60 might like it, but I can't imagine anyone under the age of 45 identifying with her.

With all the hoopla I read about the book before downloading it to my Kindle, I had expected a much more enjoyable read. I kept reading in hopes of getting to the fun parts, and eventually quit wasting my time. Needless to say, I am totally disappointed. I bought the Disappearing Spoon at the same time, but have been too discouraged to read it yet.

Some of the quips are timeless but in this day and age of technology Erma has lost me.
I do find most of it funny though. Just a little disappointed but not her fault. She just hadn't embraced the technology of today in her hayday

Erma has date with age. She is still funny but not as funny as she was. I am enjoying reading a few chapters periodically, but I remember when I read a while book without stopping and laughing with tears in my eyes. Maybe I have changed.
We all grow older. I wonder what she would be writing if she were still alive.

Forever, Erma: Best-Loved Writing From America's Favorite Humorist

By Erma Bombeck

If you want to start the year off with a dose of good humor and positive energy there is no better place to turn than the archives of Erma Bombeck. Her book, Forever, Erma: Best-Loved Writing From America's Favorite Humorist, was published posthumously and contains some of her best writings on the human condition.

There are over 100 brilliant and uplifting essays in Forever Erma featuring her no-nonsense and witty views on motherhood, family and daily living in general. The collection's chapters are broken into easy to navigate sections, such as, Hello Young Mothers, All My Children, A Housewife's Lament and The Empty Nest. The book is absorbing but entertaining reading and you can happily spend 5 minutes purusing one essay or several hours devouring them all.

Bombeck was a Phoenician who wrote over 4000 columns (appearing in over 900 newspapers in the US and Canada) and 15 best-selling books. She was a professional speaker, and successful radio and television guest who imparted her unique wisdom with candor and frivolity. She belonged to the American Academy of Humor Columnists and is considered one of the foremost writers on American life. Bombeck died in 1996, from Kidney Disease and had also battled cancer.

I am not a Mother, I do enjoy a good humorist though, and Erma delivered. This is the first Erma book I've read, and I am saddened that she won't be around to write more! However I am happy to know that she left plenty of books to keep me busy!! I especially appreciated her commentary on the socks that go in the drier as a pair and don't come out as a pair! Good argument for never having to wear socks!! I also appreciated her ability to speak freely about the Catholic church, and what Catholicism has meant for her. She didn't "force" her religion on others, yet gently stood firm in her belief, and in no uncertain terms, documented her strong faith in the Catholic church and in God. I am sad to see her go. If God only knew how funny Erma was, he probably would have taken her long ago! Thanks for giving us one last chance to laugh! Read it for the laughs, and remember, life is temporary, no one gets out alive! Erma lived life to the fullest, in this book, Erma promises each one of us, that we can do the

Erma Bombeck was a genius. I'm sure she was far too modest to admit it, but she was one of the greatest humorists of the 20th century. And her words still resonate here in the 21st.

Most people think she wrote only for housewives, or women in general, but as a guy (and a humor columnist myself), I can say that she wrote for anyone who has ever had or been part of a family, which means everyone.

This book is, in my opinion, her best because it is undiluted Erma. Humor works better over the short haul, and these columns, grouped thematically and filled with her warm, self-deprecating, gently subversive wit, are the finest and most lasting representation of her work. Even though the pieces were written between 1965 and 1996, they still hold up. They are, in fact, timeless.

Hence, the title, "Forever, Erma." I told you she was a genius.

Very funny. The chapters are short and easy to read. I had been reading a lot of historical material lately and decided I needed to take a break and get some light, humorous reading. This was a perfect choice and just the break I was looking for.

Erma Bombeck was one of the first, perhaps the first, American humourist to take on domestic humour - particularly the fairly pedestrian life of the American housewife, at a time when it was considered far too boring a topic for anyone. But, she did it with humour and it's important to remember that she was the trailblazer. However, I don't think a lot of her columns translate so well 40-50 years later, when so many others have beaten the domestic humour dead horse into a road pancake. I found the columns I loved when I was younger (and I was a teenager when I started reading and appreciating her newspaper columns) are just mildly cute today. Some of her later columns I still find as annoying as I did when I stopped reading her somewhere into the eighties when even *she* had run out of new ideas for domestic humour and was relying more and more on sappy, lachrymose tearjerker stories. Really, those should have been few and far between but as she got older they became more prevalent. This one, I guess, is mostly for the diehard fans...I only got about halfway through it actually.

Erma's humor is timeless -- 23 years after her untimely death, she STILL makes us literally laugh out loud (long before LOL was a thing). This should be mandatory reading for budding journalists and humorists, not to mention new moms and dads!

Anyone who remembers those wonderful columns will fall in love all over again. For the young who never read her columns, they apply to "the ages". Those who honored her at the end of the book made me cry once more at the loss of such a funny yet soulful and insightful woman.

I highly recommend this book for everyone.

I loved Erma Bombeck from the beginning. Her ability to make you laugh without being mean or crude, to see the humor in any situation, to be dignified and tolerant without being forceful about it. These make her a unique person.
This is a collection of some of her best columns. She knew the world could be mean, cruel, bitter, and unfair, yet she never was any of these things. She was a great writer and a great person.
I love the tribute section of this book, though the story from her husband made me cry. It was April 22, 1996 and the ride was over.

Thank you! Whoever thought this book up, I thank you! This book captures the essence of Erma. Though I never got to meet her, her books made her feel like a friend. I miss you Erma! I know you're keeping them laughing in heaven! With this book we laugh on!

Erma Bombeck can say so much ... without actually having to "say it". Her hilarious stories are lessons in life, without preaching. The humor she finds in everyday events that would horrify many people is inspirational. This book is a wonderful tribute that, even all these years later, can still make me laugh out loud when sitting by myself. And I think that was her goal. She created smiles all her life - and this book continues to do it now that we've lost her.

I ordered this for my 90 year old Mother-In-Law who in the past few months had frequently said "Remember that Erma Bombeck? I always got a kick out of her." She was extremely thrilled and suprised with a Large Print Edition of Erma's most loved short articles. I see it by her favorite chair, and I know she's enjoying it very much. The book was sent in less time than promised, and in excellent condition as expected. Great memory. Thanks!

Some of you recall seeing the tattered , torn , coffee stained colums on your moms refrigirator . This book captures all Ermas greatest colums . It's the honest truth . You will laugh out loud and cry as you nod and understand the pain . The most perfect peek into all of our windows , expressed with love . Buy this book for every woman you know , because you won't want to part with yours.

Even though the prices she mentions are no longer realistic, not many remember the psychic Jeanne Dixon, and she didn't have to deal with cellphones and teen-agers texting...her wit and humor still ring true with laughs and an occasional tear. I miss her regular columns and plan to get copies for my daughter and daughter-in-law.

Erma has always been a favourite of mine. I enjoyed the sketches of everyday life of a wife and mother.Quite nostalgic as it was written some way back when things were slightly different from today but one can still appreciate her quirky humour.
