Intertwined families struggle in the post Civil War era, during a time when many emancipated slaves continue to experience torturous and hateful ordeals. It’s a good read which neatly represents that all whites were not mean and that with faith and family, difficult challenges can be overcome.

I like that Maddie and Elizabeth, were able to come together and support each other in there own way. They were able to unite former slaves and lead them to freedom. This book was a great read. I highly recommend it.

The author was able to depict the awfulness of slavery so clearly it made me cry and since at it's horrible cruelty. Notwithstanding, she equally depicted the power of true faith. Two families from the same, but different worlds unite through faith and bravery.

Good book that reminds us that afyrt the Civil Ear life was still hard in many people's lives. The story of how they survived is great. We have to learn from history and this book helps you to understand how life really was.

This is one of the best books I have read on kindle. I like the history and it shows how the black man was treated then. Even though they were free they were still treated like slaves. We have come a long way since then but not far enough. This book is for anyone that likes history

I never knew the real story of post Emancipation. MUSTARD SEED tugged at my heart and opened my eyes. We must be vigilant as it insidiously continues today. To all who are ignorant as I was, pick up this book and you will FEEL the injustices suffered by the Negroes as you walk in their shoes.
A truly excellent novel filled with family love and those who don't deserve to be loved too.

I found so many people confusing at first and was unsure of i wanted to continue but I'm glad I did! I never realized what would happen to former slaves and slavery after the Civil War. This book gives tremendous insight to the lives of those who suffered such cruelty and indignities.

This book was so informative about the aftermath of slavery in American! Those were evil times. I'm so thankful every time I learn something new during slavery. How could anyone justify that period in this American?

Taking place just after the civil war ended this book creates a window into the lives of people still living with the racial horrors of the south. I can honestly say I’ve never really given much thought to this time period. This book is a well written and poignant look into the struggles of that time, as well as an inspiring story of love without boundaries.

Still more insight to the innermost feelings about freed slaves. Both those who were freed and those that were forced to free theirs. Most experiences were not good ones from both ends of the spectrum

Fascinating, but difficult story to read. This is fiction, but borders on historical fiction. As a white person, it has opened my eyes to some of the atrocities associated with humankind. Perhaps by some of my own ancestors. God have mercy on our souls!

This book brought alive the social injustice and horrendous mistreatment of slaves after they were freed . I was angry, disgusted, overwhelmed and heart-warmed all at the same time. The description and depiction of the differences in mindset between the north and south after the Civil War was excellent.

I am a huge fan of Laila Ibrahim and read all her books that she writes. The story is so engaging, that I just couldn't put it down. Like many reviewers, I recommend Yellow Crocus first, but this could be read without it also.

ThanksFreedom Even though I knew I was reading about the effects and struggling of the Civil War, it's not unimageable to think it could be this century. Each of the characters made decisions based out of respect and love for one another. recommend to any audiance.

A beautiful sequel - it was nice to know the next steps of these two families. Definitely not a stand alone story - the reader truly needs to read the author’s first book in order to grasp this story.

This. Is a story of continued racial tensions that we are seeing today. The genuine feelings, thoughts, and actions of a white family moving north after the civil war to help the slaves who cared for them escape after the slaves had been freed. So many things have changed unfortunately so many have stayed the same. A beautifully written book.

These books are one of the best books I've ever read, you can follow the characters and not get lost. They show us a past that though very harsh and painful, teaches us that no matter what we go through in life, it doesn't have to defined who we will become but who we choose to be. Read it you'll love it.

I can't say I enjoyed these books although I couldn't put them down. The story and characters were so compelling I had to know what would happen. Learning more about actual lives affected by slavery is a painful experience but one we should all strive to understand. We still have a long ways to go as a society to truly treat all human beings equally,

When I found this sequel,I was overjoyed to see this story continued. like any book you hate to put down, to know there is more is a gift too precious to ignore.

Sadness and joy in each situation guarantees this is another book you hate to see end.

Difficult to get into and follow. Almost every other line in the book emphasized how slavery, racial inequality, and gender inequality 'wasn't right'. We get it- it isn't right- we don't have to be told every other sentence through Lizbeth's kids dialogue. I feel like the author was quick to make a "Yellow Crocus" sequel and this fell terribly short.

This story is heartbreaking, informative, exciting and just plain wonderful. Having been raised in the north it is so unreal to think that this actually happened but like many and in all fairness, it was their upbringing and what they knew to be the way. Who can judge. I think this book would make a terrific movie.

I wasn't expecting this to close the chapter of the yellow crocus, but I was pleasantly surprised to get some answers. I love the way Laila writes, and while it difficult for most authors to pull me into the story, visualize the characters, Laila has done it for me again in Mustard Seed. I am anxiously awaiting her next novel.

A beautiful story of love, determination, family "kith" and faith. The historical events are hard to read, but something our county needs to know. This fight for the "liberty" of all people continues. May God have mercy on our country and help us to truly realize the words of our forefathers in our Constitution .

One of my favorite books is Yellow Crocus. That being said, I was looking forward to reading how life went on for Mattie and Lisbeth. Their world's intertwine and the bond they share remains steadfast in this novel while depicting historical events and a glimpse into southern life post civil war

Though the topic itself is abhorrent, slavery is a part of our nations past that we cannot erase. I found myself able to imagine the details of each character and location. It is an easy read for those times you just want a story with a handful of characters.

Thus is a beautifully wriiten sequel to Yellow Crocus. Its the story of how slavery contunued in tge soyth after the 13th Amendment abolished the institution. But even more its a story about the family who make - kith - and how you cross boundaries of blood to protect those you love.

The sad story of humans so mistreated words barely explain. The compassion and deep commitments that are the "bones" of this awesome offering must be held up and continually retold. So important, this share.
