I will say ***spoiler alert*** just in case I say too much even if I won't really go into specifics. We've been waiting a while for this book and I think of it as kind of a let down. Not because of what happens in the book, but because of what DOESN'T happen. We ended with a battle on the rise, but we don't get much farther than that story wise. We do find out a lot about other players and the ones we know already. But to me, I wish there was more story progression. Not just more backstory about Evie's allies and past games. I mean, it's interesting, but I thought this book could've been longer and not stopped where it did.

Just so disappointed in the whole book.
***SPOILERS***
Pros
-Meeting a two cards-The relationship Evie was developing with Sol was somewhat interesting. They were sharing personal experiences on their journey and if you didn't read day zero Sol's story was new to you. You could sense a seed of trust developing even though they meet in a precarious situation. The relationship is still untested (although Sol helped in the end) but there is something there that can go either way.
Zara's the other card, if you read day zero you know her back story of being a helicopter company owner etc. Other than the alliance and her small fight scenes there isn't much character growth for her.
-We see a new side of Matto-There is not much to this besides Jack noticing a sort of two face personality (one evil) coming from Matto and there were a few comments from Evie and Aric. It seems to be foreshadowing maybe in the next book???
-Death finally gets something he wants, obviously Evie.
-Jack's still alive, even though that wasn't a big surprise.
-Also I liked the writing from different characters povs. When there are a lot of people to follow it is nice when authors split up the experiences by person.
CONS
-Book felt much shorter-maybe that's why it was cheaper
-Getting really sick of this love triangle thing. When I thought Jack was dead I was happy but didn't believe he was dead. Don't get me wrong, I love Jack and was happy when Evie choose him (I couldn't pick who I liked more and was glad she did). However, when he died it cut off the love triangle permanently and that was nice because they get really annoying after awhile. Boy was I wrong.
-Whine, whine, whine. I know Evie just lost Jack and we got to follow her through her emotional state when trying to get him back but enough is enough. Guess what, she gave up on him anyway. A point was made in previous and this book to 'never underestimate Jack' and 'he'd always find his way back to her'. How many times is this going to happen??? Then when she made her decision to be with Aric she continued to whine and whine. Just kill someone already and get on with the story which brings me to my next point.
-GET ON WITH THE STORY. There were some promising ideas that never developed. The first disappointment was her grandmother. They spent 3 books trying to get to her grandmother to help stop the game and all her grandma does is tell Evie to kill all the cards, possibly sets Evie up with the whole pregnancy thing (which I don't understand what the point of that is but hope there is a good point) and then dies. We barely get to learn about any of the other cards which is a bummer cause those are the best scenes in this book. And what about Tess's death. So infuriated with the lame death she was given. She tried to go back in time to save Evie and the best you can give her is maybe a page in this book. And I think by now Tess would know when to step out of her reverse time situation before dying. It seemed like such a clumsy solution to force Evie in to Aric's arms. I would have liked to have Tess's story and the rest of the battle at fort arcana with the Emperor and Fortune than half this book. Not enough Matt, Jack, Lark, Finn, Joules, or Gabriel and too much Evie, Death was good. Could have used a little more from the enemy as well.
Sorry for the rant but it was a long wait for this book. It seemed like was an attempt to put out something to appease the masses

Never quite goes anywhere despite decent momentum. The love triangle (which I have loved throughout the series) did not have the same level of narrative weight. The cliffhanger was very disappointing, but won't deter me from reading the next one, or this one again after a little time.

Kresley, what were you thinking? The book is too short, and I won't waste my breath criticizing you as you rightly deserve to be for the quality of this particular instalment. You exude burnout (Yep!) Please pace yourself better. I won't hold my breath waiting for the next book either.
By the way, you are a darling and sweetheart and the first author I ever spent my sweet money buying their book hot off print. But someone needs to berate you for the shoddy work you did, and the length of your books in these particular series. Enough is enough, Dear!
Pay better attention to the quality of your work with the arcana chronicles as they are the only series (which you currently write) that can help you attain immortality as an author!!!!!
Berating done.. love you still!!

To quote from a previous review: "This is not a book, this is a book FRAGMENT!" KC is a favorite of mine always purchase her books on release date, this is my 1st disappointment. Guess that says something. Most definitely a 'filler' book. My advice wait until price is reduced if you must read.

Arcana Rising felt like a filler book. Without giving away any spoilers, we were promised a book where Evie would wreak havoc on the Other Arcana to get her revenge... What we got... was the opposite. I know there are more books to come, but there were zero resolutions, and no epic fight scenes, in my opinion. I adored the first two books, liked the third on re-read, but this fourth installment is very disappointing.

Omg?!?? I think I just about had a heart attack reading this, and the ending killed me!
I honestly don't know how I'll be able to wait for the next book. I'm more conflicted than ever over Evie, Jack and Aric...
I swear I'm wishing my life away wanting the next book bc they are all THAT good!!

Sad to say but this series, which WAS excellent, has jumped shark big time. Evie was a great character but now she is an indecisive moron. It's poorly written, barely moves the plot along, and very disappointing. I think Kresley had a great idea for three books and decided to sacrifice quality for money. I basically hate Evie and Death and hoped she would keep Jack dead so that he doesn't have to be involved in these silly books. Just end it already.

I waited so long for this book, I have been an avid Kresley Cole fan since the 5th book in her IAD series. The first three books in this series was absolutely amazing, but something felt off with this book. I still finished it in one-go because it was amazing, but the plot left me wanting. Hopefully the next book finds the luster that I just found lacking this time.

I wanted to start off by saying that I think that the author is crazy talented and this book is so intereating and unique. That being said, there's a lot I liked and a lot that I didn't, but I'm trying my absolute best to have faith in the author and not be discouraged and hope that the all of the surviving main characters can find truly find hapiness... especially the female lead.
Pros
-I liked how everything started off faced paced from the start.
-When there wasn't gritty action, there was an amazing profound emotion that was extremely realistic when it came to the situations of loss and the need for survival
-It DID answer a lot of questions I had concerning what happened next, history behind arcana and the games, while tying in some of the characters for Day Zero
-The next release is coming out sooner than expected, which will make any reader happy.
The Cons
-I almost threw my tablet against the wall at the end of the book. Then again, it isn't my story and I don't think that people should fault the writer if you don't like the way she is taking her own story.
-I feel certain elements are becoming redundant, but It didn't ruin the story for me, but I also feel like it divides the fan base.
-It's a personal pet peeve when writers end the book abruptly and in the middle of a scene. I can understand the author doing it one or two times. However, I talked to several people who agree with me on the nonstop cliffhangers are just getting a bit much. I honestly think I would have liked it a lot more if the ending has just a tad more of a conclusion and didn't feel like it was cut out in the middle of the scene.
Overall, it's a wonderful story and overall series, I recommend it to people on a weekly basis because of the unique concepts and the strong emotion in the pages. In fact, I love reviewing books, and I had to take some time in order to fairly give my opinion since this is someone else's hard work. I have complete faith that the very talented author will make sense of the final conclusion and gives the main character a happy ending.

I'll preface this by saying that this series so far is my absolute favorite. I've read the previous books numerous times and was so looking forward to seeing Evie grow further as a force to be reckoned with. Unfortunately, that didn't happen with this book. Based on the description, I expected her to more fully embrace her powers and finally come to a conclusion/balance on her internal battles with the Red Witch. While her grief over Jack was felt deeply and her relationship with Eric used as a way to numb herself from it, I was immensely disappointed by the ending. I absolutely hate it when authors do this and have such a strong aversion to her "situation" that I had my own grief to deal with in that this series may no longer hold my heart simply due to that one piece.
On top of all that, Jack, the book boyfriend to end all... Does Evie even deserve you at this point? I was not thrilled with how she handled herself, though can understand why Cole would work it this way. Maybe this relationship with Death serves to end this love triangle and satisfy those rooting for Death while easing readers into the realization that Jack is and always will be the only man to truly hold her heart and happiness. Please be true!
I did love the introduction of Sol and learning more about him outside of Day Zero. What was missing was more depth to Zara and the Emperor. In past books we learn more about the motivations of other Cards, but with those two that's not the case; which makes it harder to feel them enter the story seamlessly.
My only hope is that the next book delivers more movement in the actual story, answers the ever building questions, and that Evie's ending predicament here is completely fake.

"All you have to do is surrender...draw on your hatred and pain. Become her: the Empress you were meant to be."
FINAL DECISION: Sad and powerful and a game changer for the series, this great adventure also has significant things to say about love and pain and grief and survival. And what a cliffhanger!
THE STORY: Beginning immediately after the events of DEAD OF WINTER, Evie is almost killed by the attack of the Emperor and the counter attack by Circe. After witnessing the death of her beloved Jack, Evie is separated from her other love Aric. Now Evie travels along to discover what happened to the two men in her lives. Separated from friends and allies, Evie turns toward darkness as she meets new Arcana players.
OPINION: I have started and rewritten this part of my review several times. This is a difficult book to write about without spoilers and yet this is a book where spoilers can truly spoil the experience of the book. Part of the beauty of this book and indeed the entire series is the surprising journey which always ends on a cliffhanger and leaves readers begging for the next book in the series.
So I'm now begging. Luckily the next book is scheduled for next spring rather than next summer.
As this book begins Evie has lost everything. Throughout this series, just when Evie appears to have reached bottom, more is stripped from her. Evie has been struggling for a while between herself and her red witch side (which Evie sometimes perceives as dark and evil). Having been separated from everything that has meaning for you, Evie once again struggles against the darkness.
At this moment, she meets some new Arcana (so that most of the players are now revealed to to Evie and the reader). I really enjoy the complexity of the characters and their continuing mysteries. The motivations and the question of friends, allies and enemies remain a enduring complication in this book. Friends might be ready to betray; enemies might be doing you a favor.
Something is going on with Evie. She is not herself and it isn't clear why. One of the strengths of this series is that so much remains unrevealed. As I read each book, I can't help but ask how many more books are there...and yet, that mystery in itself gives an extra amount of anxiety which deepens the dissonance of the story. After all, Evie doesn't know where this story is going either.
This book while having all the secrets and action and surprises of an Arcana Chronicles book also has a lot to say about love and grief and surviving. Evie has evolved from the high school student who appeared in the first book.
This book saddened me for several reasons dealing with the plot and relationships. I don't want to give anything away, but there are going to be some unhappy fans -- and some very happy ones. I can only say, despite the cliffhanger, I think things are more complicated than they appear.
I can't wait until THE DARK CALLING to see if I am right.
WORTH MENTIONING: Without giving spoilers, I want to note that this book made me sad and unhappy at the direction the story went in. Despite that I have great faith that Kresley Cole can make it all work out in the end even if it doesn't follow what I expected.
CONNECTED BOOKS: ARCANA RISING is the fourth book in the Arcana Chronicles. It is dependent upon the prior books in the series and should not be read as a standalone.
STAR RATING: I give this book 4.5 stars.

Yeah! More like hell to the yeah! Finally! Aric you randy bastard! Just like McDonald's "I'm loving it!" Can't wait for my sister to read it so we can discuss her love for jack (who is super sexy with his accent) and my love for aric ( my version looks like Alexander skarsgard) yeah ! Freaking fantastic!

I have gobbled up each book in the series. I loved the character and plot development almost all the way through book three. I understand why she picked jack in part but I always wanted Evie to love Death. This book seemed like such a rushed and poorly done filler on the main 3 in the love triangle. Unending misery trying to read through Evie's whining over Jack(and I get that its because I am now biased but UGH was it annoying). After reading and rereading I just felt a stronger love between Aric and Evie. It felt like their getting together in this book was so lame, rushed and hollow. I couldn't even really enjoy it. There was no passion or emotion, which I cannot imagine when she actually loved and still pined for him... The redeeming factor is that the other characters in the story had decent plot lines and more character development.
Just hoping the next book gets its oomph back. I will be bitterly disappointed if it is similar to this.
Oh and the cliffhanger sucked. I hated that. Simply overdone plotline with lovers.

Once again, Mrs. Cole has written something I couldn't put down. This book really builds on Evie becoming her own person. Her arm gets ripped off and she goes crazy trying to get Jack. And that just in the first few chapters! I got this book at 12:00 am, and now it is 4:59 and I just finished it. We get to learn much more about alliances and the dangers of betrayal in this book. I give it five stars because I was consistantly surprised, intrigued, and just happy to be reading this book. Now I might be extreamly tired, and have to reread it to pick up some if the finer details, but this book might have been one of the best in the series.

I know a lot of people are upset over the constant cliff hanger endings...
But I mean, it's all really part of the story telling!! We can't expect the whole story to be divulged right away, it's got to go at the authors pace!! I'm not gonna sugar coat it and say that 2017 isn't looking mighty far, but give credit where it's due!! Kresley you've become one of my favorite authors and I absolutely DEVOUR everything you write!!
*SPOILER ALERT*
I think a lot of people aren't liking this particularly some *erm* Jack lovers out there... But I feel like she's added so much intrigue to the story through this book! After this book, I don't know where my alliances are, and Kresleys got us feeling yearning for Jack/wanting to keep Aric as happy in a rolled up in a confused bundle of dafuk just like Evie during this book! I mean come on what the heck is going on? Was her grandmother right? Is our Endless Knight manipulating her? Is she going crazy via the fool?
KUDOS again Cole, I'll be waiting to preorder the next one!

Came back and edited this. First of all, I haven't read it all. I skimmed. I read Jack's chapters. I read the last chapter. I love this series enough that I named my last rescue puppy Jackson Deveaux. But again with the continued torment of Jack. And that bloody cliffhanger. Since the cliffhangers are rarely what we think, I'm hoping for a nightmare or something. And no baby. At least not yet. A few years later is better. With the last name Deveaux. Forever indecisive Evie had been working on my last nerve and now, it's snapped. I've never written a review on a book I haven't finished. I wasn't sure I would read it, but I got over my Jackson temper tantrum and now I will. I love this series and could read it for years and years. However. Stop with the triangle already. I hate them. Always have. Not fond of cliffhangers either. I gave it 3 stars to begin with because thankfully Jack is still alive, though I never thought he was dead and I was pissed off with the rest. A happy and healthy Jackson has always been my priority. Don't give a rip about Death. So hopefully something can be worked out for everyone. Looking forward to this coming spring and the next book.

Cliffhanger is killing me. After a year of waiting I'm begging Ms Cole to write faster for book 6! Love this world and characters, hope I don't need to wait another year to keep reading.
That said, the chess board is set and ready for an epic finale.
PS. SOL is my new favorite for all time. #SolBeaJoe #LoveIsLove

It's not fair to give a book a poor review just because it didn't turn out the way you wanted it to, so I'm going to TRY to keep my disapointment over Evie's choices concerning her love life out of this review. Instead, I'm going to address some other, slightly less biased, issues I had with this book.
Right off the bat, I'm going to say that the worst part about this book is its lack of progression for the overall storyline. This book felt like just a filler. I learned more about the characters, I learned more about the Arcana and its origins, and yes, somehow I learned even more about the inner workings of our main character, Evie. But yah know what? The book ends in a place not much different than then end of the previous book. The alliance between the "good" guys is still very delicate and filled with tension. For as much as us readers have gotten to know the characters (I'm referring to the previous novella that I USED to love), the characters haven't gotten a similar opportunity with each other. At this point in the series I find that fact very frustrating.
Okay, next thing. I'll be honest and say that I'm tired of Evie. I'm tried of her decisions, her LACK of decisions, her weaknesses, her attitude...you get the point. This was the book where I expected her character to really bloom (pun intended). The worst thing is that for the first part of the book, I thought she had. I finally got to see how she could really deal out some damage...until she met up with Death and became a shell of her former self. Inside her head she continued to scream "vengeance, vengeance, vengance" for Jack after what she had seen at the end of the last book. Yet what did she really do? She stressed over her feelings for Death. Then Jack. Then Death. Then we had to learn in detail how she felt about Matthew's possible betrayal and her misgivings with her grandmother and her struggling friendship with Circie. Oh and of course we needed to check in a few times with Lark to hear about how she's breeding all her animals. Now I like she's struggling to keep her humanity, and that means she needs to be concerned about those around her, but I loved the Evie who had a backbone for a few chapters with Sol at her side. There was no Jack or Death. There was just her finally getting things DONE.
That relates to my last point: I don't like the romance in this book any longer. And no, I don't just mean I don't like it because, in my opinion, she ended up with the wrong guy. I mean that this story would be so cool if I didn't have to hear her agonizing over who she loves for over half the book. There are so many alliances that need to be fixed and potential actions that could be had if Evie decided to just maybe focus on herself for a little while. If she wants so badly to fix the world then I wish would GET ON IT.
Never would I have thought that that I could be so disappointed with one of Mrs. Cole's books, but this one really did me in. To put it simply, I didn't feel good reading this story. The tone was too dark and dreary for too long. Evie's constant guilt and worry and heartache ate at me as much as it did her. There needed to be some humor or hope or excitement in this boom to perk it up. But what did I get instead? A few sorta steamy scenes with the guy NOT of my choosing and an ending that cut off in another annoying cliffhanger--one that left me rolling my eyes and sighing in disappointment. I'm not sure I'll bother continuing with this series...

Disapointed......if anyone is listening on Kresley Cole's team, get with the program. Putting out a book in a series once a year or more doesn't sit well with readers. This was a filler to quiet all the readers down that have been dying for the next installment.
The last IAD was terribley disapointing as well. Are you a sell out for the cash? Where is the awesome reader I fell in love with?

Hideous and barely readable. It is like receiving a book in some sort of inexplicable code.Would have appreciated more plot and less adolescent mishmash and angst. This was a promising series with real emotion and characters, but it has significantly deteriorated till you feel like you are playing some kind of boring video games with silly characters and stupid powers. Waste of money, will not make the same mistake with the author enriching 12 more volumes of this stupid junk.

I am a big fan- I have all her books three of which are singed copies. If Ms Cole is anywhere nearby I go in to meet and say hi. This book- a huge disappointment.
Let me start by saying that in expected more out of my money instead of a filler book that is filled with a mediocre love triangle. This is getting back to the sweet valley high theme with ghost writers for each book. It felt that disjointed. I returned my copy for a full refund. I rather she wrote about each player individually and with their own book instead of just prolonging it. It feels like one of those daytime soaps on tv instead of a novel or series by a great writer. I will think twice before picking up another book. I'm sorry kresely

The Plot Thickens! The 4th book in the series finds Evie dealing with so much grief and loss that she has compressed her own emotions to deal with it. (Minor spoiler here). I think in away Death is her bandage to deal with that pain and sex is her crutch. There is so much going on, and Evie isn’t sure who to trust. Are her allies, really allies? or will they turn on her? Down is up and up is down. I don’t think anything is as it appears. There are too many gaps in Evie’s memory, and she doesn’t know why.
The ending is a doozy that left me reeling. I did not see that coming. I have read other reviews, and people think they know where Kresley is taking this story and world. Personally, I’ve read her IMD series, and she is never predictable, so I say hang on for a wild ride because Kresley is just getting things started.
As for the Team Jack or Team Death, I am still going to stick with my original stand I am for Team Evie. It’s the end of the world, why does a modern woman need to choose one man? With that thought, I am giving Arcana Rising 5 Boundless stars, bring on the next battle.

I'm so pissed off, sick of these stupid "love" triangles, and pregnancies are for the imaginatively bankrupt authors. Why do I keep buying these book, each one makes me angrier than the last. If Jack doesn't get the best ending, I'm never buying any of Cole's freaking books again. I mean really Jack's supposedly the love of Evie's life then she sleeps with Aric (who has killed her in every lifetime without fail; let's be serious he loves her because he can't be with anyone else) gets knocked up and oooh my Jack's still alive- shocker. I kind of want to vomit. This book just made me feel slimy and bad. Que cliffhanger- where Mrs. Cole will make even more money off my inability to give up on Jack (unlike our whiny and weak-willed heroine).

I'm not sure if my tastes are drastically changing, or many of my favorite authors no longer really enjoy the stories they're telling, or what. I didn't enjoy this. It felt like I was almost to where the story would take off, through the entire book. Minus the constant whining.
Maybe it'because this is written for young adults, though I've read some really well written young adult books lately, but it's as if the story doesn't want to be the story it started out as. It's mopey. Even the horrifically dark parts that should have me agonizing for the characters just left me flat. Then the cliffhanger. Really? Really!?!
Like so many of my favorite authors who have long series that I've stopped reading, I can already tell that I'm over this one before it's really began. I don't know what is going on. Maybe there's something new happening with publishing houses or editors. All I know is that there's an entire genre of books that I really enjoy reading for entertainment purposes that I'm about to give up on.
This is another library checkout . It's short. It goes nowhere. And it leaves you wondering if part of the book is missing. I'd rather have just waited longer and got a full story than this. I'm going to stop purchasing from my favorites until there are several reviews to let me know if an entire or partial book has been released.

When I heard the news that the ARCANA CHRONICLES were going to stretch two books longer than originally planned I feared that Kresley Cole’s sensational Young Adult trilogy was going to lose some of its shine. Listening to ARCANA RISING cured any doubts that I may have had about the author’s ability to prolong Evie Greene’s story while maintaining the same caliber of writing that I’ve come to expect from this series.
DEAD OF WINTER left fans in the lurch over many things, but rest assured that the main one doesn’t remain a mystery for long. Now that that’s out of the way, I really enjoyed how this installment broadened the scope of this dystopian world. Baggers serve a purpose other than killing, the Major Arcana aren’t the only cards in the deck, and Evangeline finally gets her hands on the knowledge of all the Empresses who came before her.
Anyone who’s on Team Death will be pleased with this novel, I know I was. Sol (the Sun) proves to be a perplexing secondary while as Matthew (the Fool) further demonstrates why in spite of his mad ramblings that he shouldn’t be overlooked as a serious contender to win it all. True to form, Cole tops it all off with a fourth cliff hanger by leaving yet another character’s future up in the air in the worst kind of way.
Emma Galvin’s performance remains flawless. It’s impossible to improve on perfection, so as long as she keeps on doing what she’s been doing, I’ll continue to purchase any audiobooks where she’s listed as the narrator. It was worth waiting an extra 1.5 months for this title to be released in audio instead of one-clicking it the moment it became available to read. I hope I’ll be strong enough to do the same for the finale.
Not all series benefit from extra volumes, but ARCANA RISING was just as good as the first three.

Arcana Rising is the fourth book in the Arcana Chronicles and it picks up from that crazy cliffhanger in Dead of Winter. Forewarning though there’s even a crazier cliffhanger at the end of Arcana Rising. Darn you, Kresley!!!
No spoilers here, but I will say this poor Evie. That cliffhanger in the third book was rough and the minute I started listing to Arcana Rising, I knew Evie was going to have a hard time in the fourth book.
Readers who are Team Aric will enjoy Arcana Rising. I know I did. I lost interest with Jack during the second book thanks to Aric. Aric proves even more why I adore him over Jack in this book. Although, I was sad to know what happened at the end of the third book with Jack. Readers will be surprised what happens though in the fourth book. Don’t worry, some things will come to light in this book, but Kresley still keeps us readers in suspense.
I enjoyed getting to know some other major Arcana in the fourth book. Two of them are absolutely scary though and one I cannot really figure out. Is he a villain or is he good?! There was quite a bit of action in this book and not much of that love triangle that drove me bonkers in Dead of Winter.
Evie finally realizes that not only are the major Arcana to worry about, but there are minor ones too. She learns a lot more about the game thanks to Aric retrieving her grandmother. I don’t think I liked her character that much though, but she played a major role into Evie getting to know her powers.
There’s also the case of what the Emperor is up to, especially what he did at the end of the third book. He’s one scary character also. I learned quite a bit about him in ‘Day Zero’, which is a companion guide that I recommend everyone read before reading Arcana Rising.
Overall, I give this book 5 stars because it definitely kept me on the edge of my seat. It doesn’t help with that cliffhanger though.
Emma Galvin is one narrator I could listen to daily tell stories because she brings the story and characters to life. I do not think after listening to Emma narrate the Arcana Chronicles that I could actually read the books now. I rather Emma tell the story with all of her accents for the characters. I just realized too that I have to wait for the next book since the fifth book in the series is not in audio version yet. Ahhhhh!! I’ll wait though because it’s worth it in the end to listen to the story. It also makes work go back faster, when you are listening to a great narrator tell an amazing story, such as Kresley’s Arcana Chronicles. I will always love Kresley’s books!!!!

First off...I love Kresley Cole. I have read every one of her books and have been on board. I haven't loved every one of them, but there hasn't been a book she has written that I've been disappointed in, until this one. I love romance. I love passion. I love apocalypse settings. I don't love messy love triangles. I was invested by the end of book one though. I wanted to see where this story leads. After this book, I just want to forget I even started this series. First off, it seems like it is going to drag out forever. Here's the problem with that...The books are published maybe once a year. I honestly forget a lot of what happens from the previous book by the time the next one rolls out. Now some readers will go back and read the previous books before the release of the newest one. I did do that with the first. Not with the last ones. So it makes it difficult to stay invested in the story. I could care less who Evie ends up with at this point. That's not a good way to feel about a series. I found myself not even caring if she lives by the end of the series. Maybe if I knew there was an end in sight. But like I said before, the way things are playing out, Cole might be writing several more books for this series. Maybe its because she has a TV deal in the works for the series? If that is what's driving the series now, I'm definitely out. I'll read the very last book in the series just to find out who lived and who died. If I myself am still alive then.
Dramatics aside, I will continue to read Cole's other books. At least I know they have a HEA at the end of the story. She really is a great author. I'm just not sure if she's evolving with this series, or being motivated by other sources. Either way, I'm disappointed.

I knew this day would come, but I had no idea it would be here so soon. I have pretty much binged this entire series in a couple of weeks, and at the beginning, I had no idea that I would be here, and in love.
The Arcana Chronicles is based on a game with life and death stakes. Every few centuries, a chosen twenty two reincarnated souls battle it out to be the winner, and claim immortality as their own. These twenty two Major Arcana have been gifted special powers by the old gods and are based on Tarot Cards.
How do you win? Well, you need to kill everyone else.
In this game, an alliance has been formed. One that vows not to kill, but to live their lives out as mortals not immortals. But in a game based on killing, and trust severed to almost nothing over the millennia, can the Arcana stay in the light?
After the unique storyline, I completely fell for the characters. There’s so much about these people that you can love, and so much of them to be exasperated about in a post-apocalyptic world, but most of all they feel SO REAL, you cannot help but fall and root for them to JUST BE HAPPY.
Evangeline Greene is the Empress – she can make and grow plants and also poison using them. In a world with no food or plants, her skills are invaluable. After surviving the start of the apocalypse with her mother, who then passed away, she continues from her home with Jackson Deveaux to get to her grandmother, who is a Tarasova, or a chronicler of the game. On the way she meets other Arcana and learns about the game.
There’s Selena Lua (The Moon), Lark (Fauna), Matthew (The Fool), Finn (The Magician), Aric (Death), Gruthie (The Heirophant), Vincent and Violet (The Lovers) and others with THE COOLEST (and scariest) POWERS EVER.
I can’t explain why I love this series in words – but IT IS AWESOME.
This will make you love characters you swore never to love, it will make your ships sink and then fly, it will make your heart break and then fix it together again.
Set in a brutal background, The Arcana Chronicles is a masterful work of art.
I am broken, I am past tears, but somehow I’m also ridiculously happy – is this what love feels like? – and I am so SO ready for book five.

This book was mediocre at best.
I was SO looking forward to this book and it was such a letdown. The first part was actually pretty good with Evie on her own for the first time and mad as hell. But it plummeted off a cliff once Death showed up (OFF A CLIFF).
This is a problem I've been having with the series since book 2. Death is an abusive boyfriend and Evie just makes excuses for it every time. "Oh, I betrayed him" Um, yeah, he forced you into marriage, then killed you! "Oh, I was evil in a past life" Again, he killed you and god knows how many other people. He used psychological warfare (repeatedly calling her wife when she hadn't chosen him), kept her from talking to others (namely Jack in the last book by turning off the radio without her knowledge), and here is the biggest thing: When Calanthe tried to use the "weight of sin" on him in the first book he said "I'd have to consider what I do to be sinful for it to work." So, murdering a bunch of kids isn't sinful? Even if they attacked first, you have two thousand years of life over them. Oh, and instead of trying to make the world a better place he just amassed wealth and power for himself. Great guy.
I could go on for pages with how much I hate this character, but I'll cut it short and go onto one more thing.

WE NEVER FIND OUT WHO THE INACTIVATED CARD IS!!!!
What a freaking tease. I got Day Zero hoping to find out; nope. I figured for sure it was in this book. Nope.
And it ends on the dumbest cliffhanger that I've ever seen. I am so disappointed in this book. I'm only giving it two stars because I have enjoyed the series in the past and I hope Cole gets her act together for another book. This was pathetic. This is one of the few times I'm actually mad at the author for how bad a job they've done. Some books are disappointing, this was just a complete waste of characters and time. If you don't have a book in you then don't write one.
This is a waste of money. I got the audio and paid almost $20 bucks. It would barely have been worth it if I had gotten it from the library.
If you love the Arcana, then I suggest skipping this one and hoping she writes something better later.

Wow poor Evie! This book was way more gruesome than previous books and I liked it. In this one Evie is back at Death's stronghold trying to heal both heart and body. Nothing new happens in this book Jack is missing and most of the previous Arcana are either dead or missing. Evie finally reunites with her grandma but that was kind of a pointless addition since the woman was sick and crazed the whole time. Death and Evie finally consumate their "endless love". I find I can't decided which beaux I want Evie to end up with. In these love triangle books I usually vote for the one with the darker personality you know the more dangerous one. But strangely I find myself ambivalent about both Death and Jack. If I had to choose maybe Death, because he cant have anybody else, and how sad is that. I read a lot of readers were upset with the Evie/Death pregnancy and how there's no way she can be with Jack now. I found that curious because have you been reading these books? This series isn't going to end with babies and happy parents. This series is going to end with blood and pain and sacrifice. I already feel sorry for her.

Things are going really crazy here! Evie is on her own. Jack seems to be dead, and she is swept away from Arik by a monster wave courtesy of Circe. I liked seeing her on her own a little. She was able to really explore her capabilities and test the limits of not just her power, but of what she was willing to do with it.
In Day Zero, the novella sharing the beginnings of the Arcana, we meet the rest of the deck, and they begin to make their appearance here. They are a twisted lot, some more than others, and some just doing whatever it takes to stay alive. As Evie encounters each one, the decisions she's forced to make on her own have major consequences for everyone. There are new enemies, new friends, and some that I'm just not quite sure of yet.
The love triangle style of romance really comes to a head here after Richter washes Jack away in a sea of lava. Evie no longer has to choose, but that doesn't seem right to her. She wants what she can't have, and she wants what's still around to have. She want's her past, and she wants her present. Another big decision Evie will have to make on her own.
There's a lot of growth and development in the Arcana in this book. They are all forced to look at their lives and their plans for the future, adapting as things change faster than they can really keep up. I'm interested to see what the Fool has up his sleeve, and how it will change the game in the next book - which is supposed to be coming pretty soon!

Ohhh sweet baby jesus I'm loving this series more and more. #TeamDeath all the way!! You guys know I love the cajun but I loves me Death a lot more! i was a little over halfway with the book and honestly I just hit the pause button. I didn't want to go any further because I was afraid Kresley would bust my bubble. I mean I was over the moon with Evie & Aric. All my hopes and dreams had come true. Everything I had imagined it would be, it was perfect!
Reluctantly I continued. And then bam....heart twisting moments where Evie's grandmother rambled on about nonsense. BUT was it really? Was she lucid enough to tell the truth?
All I know is Aric better have a happily ever after when all is said and done. I cannot take heartbreak if the story goes in another direction. I just can't.
And the ENDING! O.M.G - Yes I'm loving this more and more. I hope its true, I hope Aric had nothing to do with it. I'm betting the doc is playing dirty.
Ohhhh next book can't come any sooner?!!!!

Kresley Cole has long been one of my favorite paranormal romance authors. Her Immortal After Dark series has so many twists and turns, the heroes are always to die for, and the heroines – quite frankly – kick ass. When I learned that she had a young adult series, it was a no-brainer for me. "Arcana Rising," the fifth installment in her Arcana Chronicles series, does not disappoint.
This book picks off where "Dead of Winter" ends. Richter, the Emperor card, has covered the land with lava, and Evie sees it cascade over Jackson’s army. Flood water combats Richter, only for Evie to find herself ripped away from Death’s arms. Alone, she vows vengeance on Richter as Evie makes her way back to the Arcana fort – back to her alliance – hoping to bring back Jackson.
It’s never that simple. Evie meets new players in the game and gets one setback after another. As hope seems lost, she reunites with Death (aka Aric). The tension between them comes to a head, and Evie wonders if her ever-deepening feelings for Death are a betrayal of Jackson. The war, however, waits for no one, and Evie must decide her fate.
Evie has grown up through the series, and I have enjoyed seeing her continue on that path. The United States is now a apocalyptic land, however, and Evie has no time for doubts or questioning. She’s a woman on a mission, and her top priority is saving Jackson. She is devastated, but her anger keeps her moving, and I could understand her pain. I love reading a novel where I can root on the heroine and admire her.
I admire Evie.
Especially as new players emerge. As soon as I thought an alliance was solid, it manages to shift again, and I could never be sure who to trust. The same as Evie. It gives the reader the opportunity to feel as if they are on this journey too. This world sucks you in, and I happily latched on.
I have to say, however, that Death is the heart of this installment. He’s so afraid to trust Evie. The Empress has betrayed Death one time too many, and he tries so hard to deny his feelings, and honestly, I wonder if Evie deserves him. There is so much depth to Aric. He’s such a great guy, and the whole not being able to have touched any other woman – ever – heightens the tension with Evie to the nth degree. Gosh, but it is smokin’ tension, ya’ll.
I thought I was firmly on Team Jackson (even if he could be an alpha-hole at times), but by the end of this one, I am thoroughly on the Death bandwagon.
That’s not to say there weren’t some pitfalls. The love triangle is a little overdone in YA, and I really wanted Evie to choose (even if I, as the reader, am still a little torn.) Evie shows a lot more gumption in this book, but I’ll admit the plot is what sells me on this series. I am dying to know which alliances are real and which ones are no more sturdy than wet sand.
This guessing game keeps me on my toes, and even though many readers didn’t like the cliffhanger ending, I am okay with it. I must know what happens next! Will they defeat the Emperor? What other enemies will Evie face?
And what happens if they are all cursed to continue the game, resetting it for all eternity?
You, as well as I, will just have to wait and find out.

I wanted to take my time with this book, but I got so caught up that that plan went out the window. I hesitated on starting this series because I wasn't sure about the YA, but this is honestly one of the best series I have EVER read!! I've heard other people say they have a book hangover.... now I know what they were talking about. This book made my emotions bounce around until my head was spinning and I was exhausted! Poor Evie. I'm so happy that her and Death finally get together! Don't get me wrong I like Jack, but it's Aric!! I won't go into a long rant about why One's better than the other, but Aric's my favorite. We get introduced to new cards and the game ramps up even more. Can't wait until the next book!!! A ten star read!!!

Arcana Rising, the fourth book in the Arcana Chronicle by Kresley Cole is another great installment to this magical, end of days, post-apocalyptic world featuring zombies, cannibals, and a groups of humans with super powers that battle each other to be the last one standing, ala Highlander (1986 movie). The book to prior to this ended on a major cliffhanger. Evie, the main protagonist of this tale is not even eighteen, but has so much weight on her shoulders. Not only is she still trying to understand her powers, but searching for her beloved grandmother, who may not even be alive. Then there is the two men in her life who want her as their own. There’s Jack, the Cajun boy she knew before the flash who is her first love, and would have been her husband. Then there is Aric, aka Death who has followed her through the centuries and past lives. He’s her soul mate, but also her biggest competitor in ruling this new world of destruction and death. Evie is caught in a love triangle with these two men, but like Highlander, there can only be one. She can only be with one of them, but her HEA is uncertain, especially if she has to battle Death for the ultimate prize- her life.
Arcana Rising isn’t as heavy on the action and fighting scenes as in the past books. This installment is more dialogue heavy and interaction with specific characters as they make plans for the next battle between the Arcana. The first half features Evie recovering not only from a horrendous physical attack that almost killed her, but the loss of someone very special to her, who she adored and loved. Evie is very much a survivor, growing stronger each day. She does have a great support system for the moment because these who she made an alliance with may turn on her because of the rules of this war that has been set for centuries.
Arcana Rising is a more adult novel with some cursing and a few sex scenes. What started out a young adult series is now more of an adult one. Some would say New Adult because of the age of Evie, but based on her experiences, she is more mature than her age. Even with the adult type atmosphere, adult and teens will be entertained. Evie continues to astound with her abilities, and even her introspective on Jack and Aric. One of these men will lose, and lose big because Evie can’t be with both of them.
There are many things that occur here I can’t mention because they are major spoilage territory. Something big time shocking happens with Evie that will now change her path with one of the two men who are vying for her heart. If you’re on a certain team, you won’t be disappointed in what Evie does, and with whom. There are also some twists regarding characters missing or believed to be dead. Readers will be gnawing on their nails to find out what happens with these characters, and what their futures will be.
Kresley is a queen at writing a cliffhanger you want to shake your fist at. The last page, including the last sentence is another big, OMG she did not moment in this series that will yet again change Evie in ways you would have never expected. I actually gasped at the last sentence. An evil move on part of Kresely, but one I can’t wait to read and see how it will unfold.
Arcana Rising kept my interest and continues to awe me with the world building, including the romance element with Evie. I look forward to the next book in this series that has me salivating for more.

This was a tough review to write. I enjoyed reading Arcana Rising but I had trouble with how some parts were plotted. Also, too many questions were left unanswered, so I hope the next installment isn't the next book . As much as I wanted this series to end soon, it doesn't look like it. It's a shame because I loved the first two books a lot and I wasn't very excited with the latest ones.
Huge Spoilers Ahead:
Burning questions for the next book:
Who's Betraying Evie? Lark? Circe?
I believe the grandma and the doctor might be minor arcana. Some of them might be revealed on the next book since there was some minor arcana talk in this book
Does Matthew know that Jack is the arcana yet to be revealed? Sound to me like he's the only option for that position. And I suspect he's using Jack to manipulate Evie.
How about the symbols? Is the red ribbon related to the hanged man?
Dark calling is Matthew's dark side. Is he surrendering to it? I think he's gone rogue!
Who's the baby's father? I could be both of them since we don't have an exact timeline!
Things got pretty ugly for Evie. I was (still am) #TeamDeath but I didn't like at all how Kresley Cole plotted their reunion. I feel like Evie is with him because Jack died, and she's not invested in their romance. Aric and Evie's sex scene wasn't good because of the circumstances. And I have no idea what Evie will do when with Aric and with her baby she finds out Jack is still alive.

Oooohhhh boy, this series is going to drive me crazy. But I still liked it! There was a significantly more drama in this instalment, when I was hoping for a bit more of the Arcana and the lore. Though there were more flashbacks and more development for other characters that we weren't really familiar with, as well as introductions to new characters who I'd like to learn more about. Evie definitely, and understandably, went through significant turmoil that changed her character and forced her to mature. There was a lot of character development and revelations, and though I know the story is working to a larger goal, there were some parts that made my inner fangirl scream. I still really liked everything in it, especially the strong opening and intense end battle, before the shocking ending that will cause our beloved heroes way more problems. Still patiently waiting for the next book!

I would have given it fkve stars but wished book was longer with more info regarding the grandmother. I checked all the reviews posted at the time before I decided to read the book. For those upset about the cliff hanger I am not sure what you were expecting. If you have read the Arcana series thus far, this is standard for this series.
I also noticed many were upset over how Evie (the heroine) reacted to her loss. They felt she let them down by first being driven by revenge then realizing how much room she did have in her heart. They felt after all the loss, pain and surving she has done in the previous books that she should have grown more and not been whiny or conflicted/confused about what she wanted. They felt she should be beyond those teenager feelings and to grow up. I feel Mrs Cole is right on track with this book. Evie is still a strong heroine anx shows her doing everything to stay "good" and keep the red witch from taking over. it shows even through everything this young 17 year old girl has been through she is staying strong to her beliefs in stopping the game, staying true to her alliances/friendships and trying to find her path in this new life. Its possible to be in love with two people at the same time and to not hurt one by grieving for the other. I also truly believe she only chose Jack in the last book because he was from her home and being young she needs to hold on to that. Remember no matter the horrible situation she may find herself in and the life and death choices she has had to make, she is still a young girl trying to find her way. She has grown and I have a feeling in the next book (probably end of series) there is more heartache and growinv in store for all.

Oy. Kresley Cole you're killin' me. This love triangle is killin' me. It feels like she's trying to make both Team Death AND Team Jack fans happy. But I wish she'd commit already. It's going to be heartbreaking enough.
Evie meets other Arcana after Richter and Circe strike and displace her. I thought this book had more character development and zero forward progression with the storyline. I'm eager for the game to move along. I'm happiest with the action scenes.
Once again we're left with more questions and a shocking revelation that's sure to be a game changer. As always, I'm looking forward to more no matter how frustrating.

Getting sick of never ending cliffhangers. It's so long between stories that I'm starting not to care. This used to be my favorite author. Who could stretch out a series to like 15 books... but every one had an ending. This sucks cause I used to care so much for what happened to Jack and Evie. Now I JUST DON'T CARE. This just seems like a way to sell more books by cheating and dragging everything out. I started this book ...got bored...skipped to ending and stopped reading . A great story finishes ...or not..with a whimper.

Just my opinion and I figure some may disagree. First off, I love the author, and I didn't HATE this book, but I really didn't enjoy it. I will keep it spoiler free.
Evie-Too much back and forth. This is book 5 (and really 4 of the novel itself.) I expected some growth and I saw potential in her wanting to give it at times. I was heartbroken with her, however that beauty was just crushed by the lack of strength she shows. I get she has lost a lot, however, she is neither stronger for it now than she was before. She is a small part of the red witch, but why cant she really either take over that, control it, or just get lost in it? I'm tired of the tease in this area.
Pairings without spoilers: While I was happy about it and I won't say who, the other 'part' was constantly interrupted or had been mentioned, other people being a third wheel in emotions or in the minute...yeah, I just couldn't. I wasn't happy on HOW it happened, but I think a few of us may or may not be. This outright ruins that entire thing for me. Its not like I wanted her to just swap her feelings-because they were diff for each man she loves-but she doesn't take the time she needs. The persons mention this at least twice as does another character and it didn't 'fit'. And then she decides that one is a soul mate and one is her love (being very loose with that). And the images of another pop up right before she is with someone to the point i was like...why are you doing this.. and wanted to throw the book :( . Then she goes on to give what she thinks she should, but there was a time is ending feel to it rather than a true heartfelt 'choice'. Maybe I felt it was expected by how it was written more than I want to do this. Sorry I am being vague on purpose. it makes Evie look weak to me and sorta giving, but not true to herself in some way. I'm scratching my head over it even now.
Other things: She was not darker to me, just heartbroken. I got none of that dark edge from her. Sure she had a time she had to do what she did, yet that is the premise for the post flash time so I didn't feel it really jived ahead of that to make her 'darker'. The carnality was just fine, but as I said, the hints of the other person ruined it. It didn't cheapen it, cause I got her motivations, yet it was just...IDK...off to me? The twist with grandma and the last line were cool, but I also agree with the lingering cliffhangers than really only made me feel ticked off more than, oh cool. Matt and his little plan were neat if you call it a plan, and that seemed on par to keep me wondering. The SUN was cool. Richter seems nuts, and Gi Joe woman (I forgot her name) I didn't get her siding with him, or much of a feeling about her, aside book 4.
I cannot say anything about the last cliffhanger person Jack so there is that. I think I may understand the next card, but I also wish there was a point to be made about WHY they cannot leave this thing. Death, fauna were on par, and a new person Paul was introduced. He felt out of place, I didn't remember him from last time, but the yearly release took so long, I may have forgotten that. Maybe something is up with him. There is a lot of sadness in this book, which was well written. Cole always writes fantastically, so there is that. I too have found my interest dwindling like one of the other reviewers, where I just want to read what happens and not really...rad an entire book. There were pages I just skimmed and I never really do that.
*********Skip here if you don't want spoilers****
-Matt, what is your game plan here. Jack, you seem to have more luck than lady luck. How will you feel now that there is something new with Evie? Even if she loved you and would have run off with you, you are sure to be hurt.
-Tess I will miss you, poor thing, that is no way to go out.
-The past pairings in games seems neat
-grandma, why can't Evie be with you know who...and I think I see what you did there...shame shame.
Aric- steamy as ever, I think you are a class act, and I am glad you are happy. I do wish Evie was more into it without thinking of jackson every time before. Seriously, you deserve better.
-Evie-give the man a ring for god sake. I feel bad about the mishap that happened to you, and that may be why your powers are not on par. the sadness was beautiful, but the non-grieving wasn't. IDK how this would play out on TV, but I hope you tell us what it makes you feel about next book. Will that surprise be your death or will it turn the tide of the game? Grow a pair and find a way to merge with the red witch, or better yet, best her and be the strength you are. Strength is beauty, and it is found in ones self and the belief you can do it. If you are going to pick someone, be 100% because the way you are, it is wearing and not at all cute anymore. It makes me do an Elvis lip.
Paul- hmm, you could be good, bad, or a minor card? or maybe there was an illusion grandma used before she went on.
Grandma-why so cruel?
Again, I am sorry, but this is just how I feel. I do not expect anyone to agree with me. After waiting a year, both book 4 and 5 left much to be desired and paced...awkwardly. Book 4 was neat, but I didn't enjoy it as much. Evie grew maybe sideways but not forwardly to me. Aric turned out to be pretty cool after all and really sweet. I liked how he worked with everyone. The steam was cool, however Evie ruined that for me. Everyone feels differently. Its a rare trend, but I don't feel so moved forward in the plot. I feel stuck, frustrated, and there were a few good points, but I miss the part with Tess, Jackson a little more in depth, and a stronger Evie who can grieve, make a choice, and stop being all over the place. It was just more frustrating than enjoyable.

The first book in this series was an all time favorite. This one felt like an old fashioned soap opera. Lots of angst but no real movement. Where is the Evie Green who torched Haven with her mother's body inside? She now sits around agonizing over every action, thought, and decision past and present. Exhausting.
There were a few engaging scenes, thus the two stars instead of one. Sol was interesting. Good action scene towards the end involving Evie's alliance. Missed the banter between characters that was such an enjoyable part of the earlier books.

I read Poison Princess and loved the whole idea of this dystopian world Kresley Cole created because it was so unique and different and the next installments in this series were equally as good with the story line moving along at a good pace and the characters ever changing. I got to Arcana rising and I started going slightly insane with how rediculous and outright stupid everything started getting! For one I understood the use of Jack in previous books but I hated that Evie loved him because since the beginning of the series he has done nothing but lie to Evie and even STEAL her personal belongings and other peoples belongings to worm his way into her private thoughts and feelings ( And oh yeah even helped kill Evie's Mother while Evie was unconcious! ) He came across as completely shady to me and I even think he could be the mysterious hidden arcana that is hinted about throughout the series. I was pleased when the lava ended him and their relationship and even happier when she finally pulled on her big girl panties and moved on and started building momentum with Death because he's sexy and straightforward about his motives and intentions and always seemed to me to be a better match for Evie. But Evie's character in this book drove me crazy because she moped and whined so often about Jack it made me sick......And then you find out Jack never died! WTH?!?! End him already please! IT also came across like she was only with Death to make Death happy not because she actually loves him, which she says a lot and has said about him in previous books but you just don't feel it. In this book Death evolves and is loving and hot while Evie remains stagnant and withdrawn and completely self absorbed. Also all those books lead up to Evie finding her Grandma and she is a cruel old wretch in this book with no heart and no real useful information so what was the point? It felt like there was no movement or momentum in this book at all and Evie was just trudging along at a grueling pace doing absolutely nothing and the ending was terrible! Did her evil Grandma set up Evie's mysterious pregnancy with the medic Paul because those two spent an awful lot of time together before she died? Either way it was a terrible way to end the book and a total cop out by the author who I thought was a little bit more original than that. This book was a complete let down and if it wasn't for the scenes with Death that show how much depth and emotion his character actually has and the introduction of the new Arcana Sol I would have skipped right over reading this book in the series because the rest of the information in it is just about useless

Overall the book is a good read. It kept me turning pages after pages and the cliffhanger will keep me excited for the next book.
After reading from Endless Knight until Arcana Rising, the story either goes two ways:
1) Based already with the flow of the entire series, it majorly leans on Aric/Evie romance rather than Jack/Evie. Personally I favor this pairing. Its not a safe choice and Aric compliments Evie much more than Jack does. Love is not instant, its grows and I belive Evie will grow to love Aric more than Jack, as well as make herself grow more as an arcana. In this way, Jack makes the ultimate sacrfice and deals the last blow to Richter that will kill him. Reason is to me he somehow holds back Evie, and i believe the author sees this too. He just cant make Evie rise to her potential. At the end Evie and Aric will live out their life and let Circe or Fauna ultimately win the game ofcourse leaving a legacy.
2) Evie does end up with Jack which will make her the winner of the game. Aric makes the ultimate sacrifice to save Evie. Evie will be immortal and will never grow old or die until the next game. Jack will die in the long run. Evie will then meet Aric's predecessor and they will be finally be together... whatever.... #1 makes a more convincing and satisfying ending
Well goes with saying I'm team ARIC!!!

In the next installment on the Arcana Chronicles we see Evie get attacked by the Emperor, one of her greatest enemies. In an attack that possibly ended the life of her love, Jack, Evie has been separated from Death and from the others, and is now on her own. As she grieves the death of those she’s lost and plots her revenge, Evie steps closer and closer into the shoes of the Red Witch, the true form of the Empress.
Just like the previous books, I devoured this in a day! I actually missed my bus stop on my way home from work I was so engrossed in what was happening. Due to the actions of another Arcadian, Evie ends up north in Indiana, rushing to get back to the South to attack the Emperor for his actions!
This is the first book in the series (excluding Day Zero) that gives us the point of view of other characters such as Mathew, the Fool, and others within the text. This opens up the world that we have, so far, have seen exclusively through Evie’s eyes. Things are changing fast and Evie has to decide just who will she be when it all comes down. Will she be Evie, the Empress who ends the games? Or will she be Evie, the Red Witch, who is determined to win the game? Further information is revealed that might change the course of Evie’s actions and might change the course of where the characters are going.
We are introduced to new players and as the book reminds us, All Arcadians lie, I’m having a difficult time figuring out who’s a friend and who’s a foe, and I know Cole did this on purpose. No one, including Evie, can be trusted! And the ending! Oh my goodness, pick this book up! It’ll change everything!

I love this series. While this wasn't my favorite book in the series, I still devoured it and bought it twice - once in paperwork (because that's all that was available, then in Hardcover, my prefered choice of reading).
I'm a huge fan of Death, and he was so promient in this book - I also loved the development of some of the characters.

4.5 stars. I finally got my Aric fix. Team Death! Can't wait for the next one! (Yes, I understand why some folks felt that this book feels a little too much like filler. I'm still on board though.) Matthew is fast becoming the most intriguing of all.

A lot of great moments in this book. Really enjoyed Aric/EV, Sol, and Matt's dark side but overall, disappointed that the plot didn't progress much and the book was SO SHORT. Oh, and don't even get me started on the cliffhanger... Stupid. I'm sure it'll all tie in brilliantly in the next installment, but honestly I would rather have waited for a longer, more complete book.

I don't know how it's possible, but even more intense than the last book! And if I thought the last book was a cliffhanger, this one is a monster of a cliffie!!!! Worth every minute, 10/10 would read again!

What...the...hell?!? Really?!? KC, you wrote a book just for writing one sake...no real progress with the Arcana but just mainly to show us a very immature rushed reasoning for throwing Evie at Death. Not impressed at all. Am deciding whether to even continue to read this series....very disappointed, her earlier books definitely better and more engrossing.

Too much cliffhangers.... I hope the thing are settled for the love triangle, which might not be the case, knowing KC.... despiteI have always shipped for EviexJack, Any other issue would be too ackwards, from my view.... Interest has quite for the story decreased with this settlement in my case

This was once a promising series with a strong heroine but now not so much. This ridiculous love triangle sucks all the fun, action, joy, wonder out of the book. I couldn't even finish it, ended up returning it for a refund which I have never done with a Kresley Cole book. Sadly i'm done with this series.

Ugh, yasssss. This book was everything. Seriously, read it. Enjoy the feels, the love, the angst, the action. So worth it. Stories and writing like this are few and far between. Gah, my only complaint is that I zoomed through it in under five hours and I'm guessing the book hangover I'm currently nursing will last for DAYS. Now to settle in for the long wait.
