The book Charlie And the Great Glass Elevator is a great book. When Charlie, his family, and Mr. Wonka go in a ride in the elevator the glass elevator gets too far up. It ends up in space. Then they see a space hotel and want to link up with it. When they get onboard they have a feast, but as soon as they eat, "knids" start appearing one by one, and start to spell "SCRAM." Find out what happens to them by reading this great book "Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator."

I agree with some reviewers in that mostly all of what the book talks about is the glass elevator and Charlie's grandparents. It does state nothing about what Charlie did after all of this with his new chocolate factory, but I disagree with those who say that book was awful. I enjoyed reading it, despite the above complaints. It was very well written, and interesting to read, althought I would have liked to read about what Charlie did with his inheritance.

We are big Roald Dahl fans, but this book dragged quite a bit. I read to my children nightly and we struggled to stay interested. As a sequal to "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" I would have prefered to read more about their experiences in the factory. On the contrary, it has little to do with the factory and all to do with outside adventures.

In this book i read it was like 2 storys in one half of the book is in space and the outher part is at the chocolate factory. I thought the first half was kind of boring it was like in space and they went to the space hotel and they missed the way home so they ran into some vermicious knids. In the outher half it tells about wonka vites and vita wonk. Vita wonk is to make you allder and wonka vite makes you younger.

I had never read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but I am a big fan of the movie, Willy Wonka, it is also one of my pre-schooler's favorites. We read Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator together, one chapter each night, and it was wonderful. It picks up right where the movie (and I assume the book) leaves off. The story was slightly inferior to The Chocolate Factory, hence the 4* rating, but nonetheless it was very enjoyable and well-written.

This is a funny, funny book! The story is not as good as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but this book is MUCH funnier.
I've read from some of the other reviewers' comments that their children didn't really like this book because the dialogue was over their heads. That may well be true--I read this book for the first time as a teenager. I read it out loud to my parents and all three of us were practically rolling on the floor!
I think this is a great book, for what it's worth.

OOOOOOPS!!!! WENT TO FAR!!!!
When The Great Glass Elevator goes too far, there are some problems.
They're being attacked by Vermicius Knids and there is a commuter capsule on their tail!! When they finally get back to The Chocolate Factory, Grandma Josephine, Grandma Georgina and Grandpa George are too lazy to get out of bed. Who (or what) will make them get out of bed?
This book is recomended for people who like astronomy and crazy things. It is appropriate for kids from 8 to 10 years old. I gave this book two stars because I think that it is too crazy and not very interesting. For example: I don't much enjoy stories about aliens that invade space hotels. How can glass be Knid-proof?

The publishers must have demanded a sequel, so this is what Dahl came up with. Slow, repetitious, and not very imaginative.
The glass elevator goes up-up-up. So what will come next? It will go down-down-down. The grandparents take pills in order to get very, very young. What will happen next? They take pills to get very, very old, of course. But not without alot of repetitive dialog to make the whole story last longer. Ugh.
We both loved some of Dahl's other novels for their creativity and heart (for example, The BFG), but this one feels almost like it was written by someone else. Maybe kids will like reading this book to themselves, but reading it aloud to my daughter was a chore.

This book made me laugh a lot. To understand it better you should read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. This time, Willie Wonka has taken Charlie's whole family into outer space in the great glass elevator. The grandparents made me laugh the most, especially when they yell at Mr. Wonka. Mr. Wonka is his craziest ever in this book! They have to save the space station from being squashed by aliens, though! Watch out for Willie Wonka in this hilarious book.

I really didn't know if I would enjoy this book as much as the first since the first half of the book is spent in outer space and not at the Chocolate factory. But once they do return to the factory, it picks up again. I still recommend this book, but the original is far superior. I don't know if I liked how selfish this book made Charlie's grandparents seem. This shouldn't be turned into a movie

The book Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator was a great and funny book. I admired it because the author of this book made it seem like you were in the place that you were reading about. It was a sequel to the book "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". Most of the book took place in outer space. I thought that this book was a great book and I would recommend it to anyone. That is why I gave this book 5 stars.

Actually, in comparison with the first book (Charlie and the chocolate factory) this book is definitely not as good. I did however read it in 2 days because I wanted it to be done in a matter of time for school, and, I couldn't put it down. This book does not have as much adventure because it's in space and then taking wonka vites and Vite Wonkas and so on and so forth. This book did keep your attention and of course, was written by roald dahl which makes it superior.

After reading the delightful Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, this sequel was an absolute let-down. The novel begins with the great Glass Elevator breaking through the ceiling of Charlie's (formerly Wonka's) chocolate factory and rocketing into orbit around the Earth. While beyond the reaches of Earth's atmosphere, our heroes---Charlie, Grandpa Joe, and Mr. Wonka---must deal with the malleable and voracious Vermicious Knids (pronounced "K'Nids"), aliens which resemble unfrighteningly hostile figs or turds with eyes. Far worse than these beasties, though, are the insufferable old folks whose twenty-year stint in their shared bed has made them less than useless. Charlie, Joe, and Wonka, with no help from Charlie's folks or other grandparents, save themselves and a US spacecraft from the clutches of the Knids and return to the Chocolate Factory, where the old timers stupidly overdose on youth pills, returning them to infancy or beyond. Charlie and Wonka race around trying to help these ancient parasites, who respond to this assistance with the thanklessness the reader comes to expect from these oldsters. At the end of the novel, the geriatric brigade finally leaves the bed when they have a chance to meet the President.
In short, these three are the most tedious, spiteful, unredeemable characters I've come across in children's literature and I hoped that they would be eaten by the Knids or the Gnoolies or even the Oompa-Loompas as I read this book. As it is, they (unlike the awful kids in the Chocolate Factory) learn no lessons and persist in their curmudgeonly parasitism from the first page to the last. Their presence throughout the novel rendered it a chore, rather than a joy, to read.

I chose this book because when I looked at the cover I thought it was cool. The cover shows and elevator flying up in space, so I thought it would be about space and cool inventions. The book wasn't like that at all. It was about Mr. Wonka, a man who owns a chocolate factory, and Charlie, a kid who will be getting the chocolate factory, and Charlie's family. They go into space and help people from dying and as a reward having a party. Since the book was different from the cover, I do like what's in the book better than the cover and the idea of the cover.
Mr. Wonka, Charlie and Charlie's family got into an elevator and ended up in space. They stayed in a Space Hotel for a day and later had to save it from space aliens. This book is for children 8 - 10. I couldn't put this book down. It is a great way of using your imagination. This fantasy is written by Roahld Dauhl.
I liked imagining what aliens looked like, and how they saved the space hotel.

Continuing where Charlie and the Chocolate factory left off, this book takes you through Charlie and his family's further adventures with Willie Wonka. See how Charlie and Willie Wonka take the Great Glass elevator where no man has gone before (well, almost). See how they even give the U.S. space program a helping hand as they help save some unwitting astronauts and the new Space Hotel U.S.A. staff from certain death from a hitherto unknown menace from space. After this, can Charlie and Mr. Wonka rescue Grandma Georgina from Minusland without getting themselves subtracted in the process? Suspend your disbelief, sit back, relax and find out how it all comes together--or not.

This book lacks some of the focus and the sheer joy of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but it is a delight nonetheless -- Charlie, Mr. Wonka and Charlie's family take the Great Glass Elevator around for some wild adventures.
It's a sequel, folks. And, frankly, when you are the sequel to the greatest children's book ever written, that's a hard act to live up to. Dahl does a decent job, so I give him 4 stars.

This book is about Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator. A funny and interesting book because it tells you what happened after the Factory was given to Charlie in the first book. Charlie had been one of the five winners of the 5 Golden Ticket in the first book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. This book also tells you what happened to the button-filled Glass Elevator which they rode before entering the factory. Partly sad, because Grandma Georgina turned into

After the Prequel, Charlie and Mr. Wonka and the crew are left in the Great Glass Elevator. In the sequel, (they're still in the elevator,)they find the Grea Space Hoteland the Commuter Capsule in space. They decide to be th first ones to to enter the Space Hotel, so they go inside. Inside, they find the Vermicious Knids.(a kind of green-brown upside down eggs with eyes) So they scream run away back into the elevator. There are Knids everywhere! Even outside the Hotel! But fortunately, the Elevator is Knid-proof. The Elevator flies all the way around the world, but they end up where they left! They decide to save the Commuter capsule, so they hook onto it with Knid-proof rope, and fly back to the Earth, unhooking from the Capsule and the Elevator ends up in the Chocolate Factory. I was looking through the the store.com books section for children and young adults, searching for just-slightly-past-Christmas presents for my niece, when I made an amazing discovery. For 24 years I have wondered just how Charlie, Grandpa Joe, Willy Wonka and the rest got back to earth after the great glass elevator left the building, and suddenly a way to answer my questions was at hand! After buying "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" for my niece, I ordered "Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator" for myself. Once again Roald Dahl succeeded in creating a work so vivid that it creates a picture in your mind better than a movie (because you can go to the snack bar and not miss any action). This is a wonderful book for children with imagination (even the 35 year olds). If you've always wondered what happened next, this is a great way to answer those nagging questions.

Not as good as the original.
The takeoff into the Sequel of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is ok, but the rest doesn't live up to it, unfortunately.
You can save the kids this one and go for some of Dahl's other work, or just go through the first book again.
The space mission here isn't as much fun and doesn't offer as much clever commentary as the other book.

While it's true that CHARLIE AND THE GREAT GLASS ELEVATOR picks right up where CHOCOLATE FACTORY left off, it does not continue on the same fun-filled path. There are adventures in space, a fight with an alien species, and many other senseless adventures which may work well in another children's story (or stories, since many of them do not work well in the same story). There is no central, cohesive plotline. There are no lessons or morals. The most glaringly absent item from this book is the sweetness and charm of its predecessor.
I'll not read this again nor will I recommend it to anyone of any age.

Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator is a GREAT BOOK! It stinked so much I loved it. There is two plotlines that don't go together, which is okay! Commander Dahl(he was a Commander in the RAF during World War 2.), your a genius. I know it got bad reviews, etc., but it was a pleasure reading it, even though Dahl hated writing the thin book.

Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator is a good book by Ronald Dahl. My favorite character is Charlie. The story takes place in the chocolate factory. I really didnt learn any thing from this book. Some of the events include blasting up into space, saving souls of grandparents and rescuing the crew of the Space Hotel. I dont want to give the ending away, but it has to do with the President.

After having read Charlie and Chocolate Factory after seeing the movie based upon it, I was happy to discover that there was a sequel. I immediately checked this book from the library and started reading it right away. Needless to say - I was very disappointed.
The plot of book is, truthfully and bluntly, quite stupid. It was sequel made for the purpose of having sequel. Don't waste your time reading this book.

After reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to my 5 and 7 year olds, I got down my childhood copy of Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator. It made for a terrible read aloud! The plot was slow, the dialogue boring and I had to edit out some racist parts about China and the Chinese. We all decided to abandon the read aloud after Chapter 5. Very disappointing! I was actually surprised to still find the book in print!

I first read this book in the second grade and, as a fan of both space travel and Dahl's other books, I loved it. Looking back over nearly 20 years, I'm struck by one of the story's minor characters--specifically, the President of the United States. The book's POTUS is an incompetent, immature boob controlled by his Vice President, who he addresses as "Nanny."
Obviously, this bookis a work of fiction, and a scenario like the one I just described couldn't possibly happen in real life--or could it? ;-)
It's for this reason that I don't foresee a movie version of this book--which could potentially boast some awesome special effects--being made before 2009.

This book is not that good. Because there aren't too many things happeningin the begining. And then it just switches subject and another thing happens instead. Somrtimes it's very funny but when it's not funny, it's a very boring book.
However the characters in the book are guite good. My favorite character is mr. Willy Wonka. He is very funny and he's never scared.
I don't recommend this book to anyone, but if you want to read it it is better to read "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" first.

Charlie and the great glass elevator is a book for all ages. It makes you think of things that never before came to your mind. It is the kind of book that you read for enjoyment and not because you have to. Rauld Dahl uses great imigry and humor to get you hooked on it. He invents new characters that just make you laugh or make you think if that could really happen. This book recieves 6 stars from me but i could only fill out five.

We recently finished "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" as a readaloud to our five year old daughter. What a cruel disappointment to read this book. By chapter three, we were all bored. And as a parent, I thought the characters were unusually mean as they spoke to each other. By chapter four, the "President" was racially stereotyping other cultures. As the parent of a Chinese child, I couldn't even bring myself to read aloud the Chinese Prime Minister's dialogue (for example: "Gleetings, honorable Mr. Plesident" and "Excuse pleese, Mr. Plesident. You make big mistake."
Needless to say, we didn't finish chapter four, and we won't be finishing the book.

This book is a worthy successor to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Maybe not quite as good, but still very satisfying. For Bill Herring and his unfortunate son, I would recommend "Retarded Isn't Stupid, Mom!" by Sandra Z. Kaufman. It'll help you through some tough times.

I recommend this audio CD 110%, for people of all ages. There is none better than Eric Idle, and he does supremely with this particular item. His voice, his narration, and his actions through words really bring Roald Dahl's book to life. It is highly enjoyable, as well as hilarious.

Much unlike the wonderful first book,Charlie and the chocolate factory, this book was horribly boring, and I had trouble not falling asleep while reading it.This book is definitely not one you'd want to read.

It is a great story, with my favourite part being the part where the Glass Elevator went into space.Even though it wasn't as good as the first story(Charlie and the Chocolate Factory)It is a great story all the same.

Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator is a very exciting book. Charlie and Mr. Wonka, his grandmas and his grandpas, his mom and dad, get into lots of troubles. You'll have to read the book to find out what happens to them. It has a great beginning and ending.

I purchased this for my daughter and nephew and it is a great story and continuation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory! It is Art, it is not always supposed to be understood by everyone but we love it!

After enjoying Charlie and the Chocolate Factory I was looking forward to this book. I quickly came to the sad conclusion that it did not measure up to the brilliance of the Chocolate Factory. Perhaps the standard was set too high but I was not impressed at all with this continuation.
