If this book is a starting point to encourage further research then this book serves its purpose. As mentioned, Dr. Berry, offers no footnotes or links to research his information. So do not take any of his claims as final truth. If you research you will find contradicting studies and opinions all over that will likely lead you to throw your hands up in the air and get on with your life as usual.
With that said, there are a few grammatical errors in this book, some explanations that seem a bit confusing or contradictory. Although not really important, I agree with some of his positions because I have read some of the books he has mentioned and at length researched the info.
Since I tend to be fairly balanced in my eating habits and don’t go to excess like consuming gallons of milk per week or eating a loaf of whole wheat bread every day or two then I’m not too concerned with what he has said about those products. In my mind, research has yet to unequivocally resolve the milk/grain issue. You’ll find contradicting info on this. Weight has never been a problem for me like apparently it has been for Dr. Berry. I don’t drink a lot of milk and I couldn’t care less that it’s not a good source of vitamin D any more than nutritional value of tea which I drink occasionally or beer for that matter.
I enjoy my meat and am not afraid of saturated fats. I agree with Dr. Berry’s position on this. Cholesterol, well, that’s another story. Few years ago I stopped taking my statins because of what I read in The Great Cholesterol Myth. Now I have hypercholesterolemia, at least, the numbers indicate that. Cholesterol is just one of many players in the atherosclerotic process, so, I wouldn’t throw it out with the bath water just yet. This doctor and several others think they know the truth. Do your research on this one and you’ll find maybe they are correct or maybe they aren’t.
Anyway, I could continue but enough said for now. Oh yeah, one other topic and that’s sun and skin cancer. Again, with research I’m not totally convinced that there is NOT a link. Some studies appear to show a correlation between UV rays and basal/squamous cell cancers and perhaps much less connection with melanomas. Opposed to what Dr. Berry wrote there seems to be more of BC and SC cancers in sun exposed parts of the body than what he implied.

Really good book. I happened across Dr Berry's youtube channel not long ago and was looking forward to this book. I wish we had more doctors like this. Check out his book, check out his videos. Ask questions. Research your health. Expect more from your doctor and never just take his or her word on everything. After all, your doctor works for you so don't be afraid to fire him if he's wrong!

By following the guidance of Dr. Berry’s book, and working with my doctor to tailor a healthy weight management program specific to my needs based upon his common sense guidance, I have lost 40lbs in just under 6 months. I am losing it the right way, eating the right foods by flipping the dietary pyramid upside down. I have another 65 lbs left to lose which I am feeling extremely optimistic about thanks to Dr. Berry. I have been obese my entire life and was always told the same thing, you need to eat less and eat more grains for fiber. The problem was, I wasn’t eating enough to engage my metabolism in the first place, so the doctors telling me to decrease what I already wasn’t eating, was not helping me at all. I’m 41 years old and never had any idea why I was obese, and every doctor that I went to kept trying to get me to go on Weight Watchers which I refused because I refuse to eat processed foods. Come to find out, I am extremely carb sensitive. Therefore, my eating more whole wheat and grains as I was being told to do, was incredibly counter productive for me. I now know what my problem is, and what to do to fix it! Thank you Dr. Berry!

This author/doctor reveals the necessity for doctors to stand up for their patients by continuing to learn from newer science what really is/is not working . By recognizing the harm caused by sticking with the standard of care even when the best designed studies show such care doesn’t work or worse is damaging to patients, doctors lose all credibility and the chance to help patients heal. Sometimes their treatments in fact kill patients.
The medical myths show several examples of harm from a system that fails to challenge its own dogmas even when good evidence shows those dogmas are wrong. Also, we patients now have access to a wealth of medical knowledge via the internet and we see that often doctor doesn’t know best. Patients need to persist in sharing knowledge with doctors both to bring our own treatment into the light and to hopefully become a team member with our doctors to return us to health. If your doctor will not work with you fire him or her and find a new one!
I believe we are living through the dark ages of big pharma controlled medical education and that this cannot continue much longer as the truth escapes and reveals the fallacy of a sick care rather than a health care based system. Why are doctors still not trained in nutrition or the success of high dose vitamin C in stopping major infections or cancer or building strong immune systems? This book shines a light on the need for all of us to stand up for change.

This is a very informative book. I have pretty much studied and researched most of the topics Dr. Berry covered, so it was good to find an actual Medical Dr. out there who has discovered the same things about current medical practices. Sure, you can find tons of chiropractors (Berg, Schmidt, etc.) who have no medical training whatsoever, acting like experts and trying to sell you all kinds of supplements/packages at ridiculous prices. Finding a REAL MD who gets it - priceless.

Where do we find more doctors like this who don't blindly follow guidelines for fear of lawsuits or admonishment from the American Boards of whatever? You can search and find most of this information in various places, but Dr. Berry brings it all together in one book. As long as "Big Pharma" runs our medical schools and pays off our legislators, we have to educate ourselves to avoid harm. Think about the surgical mesh scandal! Also be aware of the large number of generic drugs made God knows where that don't work very well because the FDA is inadequate at their job. I'm sure Dr. Berry has lots more he could write about. I will be waiting.

Great book, easy to read. I've been learning about many of the topics discussed in the book for about 5 years. He doesn't list his references, but gives you homework as other books to read shows you where to do your own research on topics that interest you and how to read and determine the real findings of the research. For the skeptics out there I've been grain, sugar, and dairy free for over a year now. I've lost close to 50 pounds and it is very sustainable. Fat is very filling and makes the diet much easier than the Atkins or Paleo. Breaking the sugar and carb addiction including fruit and not fearing fat was key with my success. I've never felt better or had more energy. My triglycerides are about 25% of what they once were, I am not longer borderline diabetic, my seasonal allergies have disappeared, I haven't been sick, and I'm at a healthy BMI. My success spurred others around me to make changes. My wife has lost over 50 pounds in the last 10 months. For anyone who is skeptical about common medical advice which doesn't seem to work and wants to begin a sugar free, grain free, dairy free lifestyle this book is a great place to start.

Author claims that many doctors have possibly "unknowingly lied" about medical information that they have given patients. A lie is knowingly providing false information, so the author doesn't even use the definition correctly. Having read 50% of the way through, there's been barely any references to any of the research that the author briefly talks about, mostly just book recommendations at the end of each chapter and a "just google it yourself and you'll see" type statements . Also, he uses anecdotes to support his criticisms of the majority of medical experts. For example, he supposedly sent a patient to a well-respected gastroenterologist who gave the patient bad medical advice, and speculated that the expert did not do enough research. He also claims that this well-respected gastroenterologist did not take into account the patient's medical history. I am very highly skeptical that any well-respected physician would completely skip over someone's medical history, especially when that patient was characterized as "obese" and a "smoker".
Mind you, this is only what I've gotten after reading halfway through, but so far this book seems to have some red flags.

This book, as well as the author, Dr Ken D Berry, is the most honest piece of literature I have ever had the pleasure of reading. As a nurse, I too, have been guilty of passing on many of the “lies” that are clarified in this book. I follow Dr Berry on social media, and have found that he is a trustworthy source. Not only has he made changes in his practice, but in his own health! I am thankful that he has been so generous as to share this information with others and has included “homework” so that we can make changes in ourselves and be a part of the solution, instead of part of the problem. Thank you Dr Berry! Keto Win!!! ~The Sassy Keto Nurse

The message of this book is important. You should read it and share it with everyone you know. The information found within has the potential to radically transform your health for the better.
Dr Ken Berry is one of the few doctors who has the guts to take out the metaphorical machete and hack through the jungles of medical jargon and mercenary interests that make up the medical field today.
But you don't have to take his word for it. He cares enough to provide you with resources and homework to find answers for yourself.
If you want more of Dr Berry's insights, you can also find him on his delightful YouTube channel. I listen to him almost every day.
There is something to be said about a doctor who is not only willing to share an unpopular opinion, but is also willing to put his face and voice front and center.
Dr Berry believes in his message, and now I am a believer, too. We would all be lucky to find a doctor as authentic and dedicated as him.

You can feel the sincerity and you will cheeer the courage! Dr. Berry makes it abundantly clear that to reap the current and future benefits of science in the areas of health and nutrition we must stop being spectators and become players in the game of life.

Dr Berry is a courageous pioneer and his book illustrates this. I am a 72 year old woman and have been researching better health for several years. Through a ketogenic lifestyle I am free of disease and take no medications whatever. Dr Berry"s book mirrors so much of the research I have found. He writes in a straightforward way as if he is speaking to you directly (and with a sense of humor ). I will be sharing this book with my relatives and friends . Thanks so very much Dr. Berry for all you are doing for this (nutritionally) messed up society.

Dr. Berry's writing is easy to read and understand. Great presentation of why we have been taught these lies, and the research (or lack of) that proves they are wrong. The suggestions, while simple, will require work because my eating (and shopping) just got turned upside down. Oh how my kids are going to miss pasta (even the whole wheat)!
I appreciate the author's personal story and honesty..."I was a fat assed doctor telling my patients to loose weight..."

Very eye opening! Dr. Berry is a real doctor with a small practice in TN. He seems to have a passion for learning and a passion for truly helping people not just blindly following what Big pharma want him to do. I have suggested this book to many, many friends. I hope they read it because how we treat out bodies matters. I also suggest checking out his Facebook and YouTube page. I look forward to approaching my doctor on some of the medical myth in this book to see what they say.

I really enjoyed reading this book because it has a treasure of wisdom and health information. No one cares for your health more than you, so we all need to know more about nutrition and health. It is too important to leave to your doctor. It isn’t his or her job, it is yours.
Every chapter encourages you to learn more and read more. There are several book recommendations he gives that I am now interested in reading.
Good book. I couldn’t stop reading it.

This book was recommended by someone in my keto group. It is well done, extremely informative and packed full of valuable information.
It should change the way you think, and eat and feel.
It turns everything you thought you knew upside down. It has my age old perceptions and beliefs! As a nurse I repeated so many of the “lies” because it’s what I was taught. How wrong we have been.
I plan to share this book with my healthcare providers. I hope they will be receptive to change.
Im hoping it will give us a way to better communicate.

Mostly true, ( as the recommendations of the major medical communities and their peer reviewed journals are not good science) BUT you use references to Mercola and Hyman, both proven Quacks....defined as persona with medical degrees whom profess a belief without scientific evidence like the Dr Oz show...a scam.. Remember, good science states that results are REPRODUCABLE.......lab mice studies DO NOT replicate in Humans.......and all studies need to be done many times before they are accepted as true...so Yes, be a Sceptic, don't get taken in by this modern day snake oil....Eat a whole foods diet, take NO supplements and exercise and have fun....if so, you will live long and prosper.........

Some of the concepts and information were good by the tone was quite aggressive and very "all or nothing", either every doctor does this or nobody does that. And the author makes it sound like all doctors (except him) are not very good. Also whoever edited the book did a horrible job as there were tons of errors and misspellings.

Dr. Ken Berry, disillusioned with so-so results and adverse effects of pharmaceuticals, turns to nutrition to help himself and his patients. In his quest he learns that many long-held beliefs are simply false and he shares what he has learned with the world. He has a keen writing style and I had trouble putting down this very interesting book.
Doctors receive minimal instruction in nutrition, usually a hand full of hours. Doctor take the Hippocratic Oath when they graduate but ignore the fundamental principle espoused by Hippocrates--let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.

I have been following Dr. Berry on social media for a while now, and love his raw and real attitude. He doesn’t sugar-coat anything and tells it like it is. It took me less than 2 days to read this book; I couldn’t put it down. It really makes you question everything you know (or think you know) about your health. I love that at the end of each topic, Dr. Berry gives homework and resources for you to read. He doesn’t just want you to take his word for it, but actually research for yourself. I will definitely be buying more copies to gift to friends, family and my doctors. Looking forward to not only reading the books recommeded in this one, but also reading any other books Dr. Berry blesses us with!

Wow! What an important book for everyone. Dr. Berry lays the truth out in an easy to read impossible to put down book. He covers several of the myths we are told about our health. Salt is bad, milk is good for you, testosterone will give men cancer, and many more. This book is a fast and engaging read so take the time to read it for your health and body.

I liked how honest Dr Berry is and the great advice. I am recommending this book to all my family and Facebook friends and probably will be buying a few books to give as gifts. I have been doing the Ketogenic diet since last August and have lost a lot of weight and have improved my health , and love this way of eating , amount of energy I have, less inflammation, no more blood pressure meds , my asthma seems to be better. Thank you

I love the way Dr. Berry explains difficult concepts in such a down to earth manner! I remember hearing many of these myths / lies from my own doctors, and I just believed everything I was told. I am also a fan of the way he provides studies, books and websites for further information and to back up his conclusions. Definitely a book everyone needs to read!

I just finished your book "Lies My Doctor Told Me", and I didn't consider myself much of a reader, but this was mind-blowing. Thank you so much for writing this. I got so much out of it and have told many about it and you. The knowledge I've gained from it will affect my life positively from here on. I started listening to your videos, and following you and your keto advice May 30, 2018. I'm down 30 lbs. I have another 90 to be a healthy weight. I'm in it for life! ?

Almost every doctor I have ever encountered needs to read this book. If I had listened to most of my doctors uncritically I'd be dead. Definitely will be sharing this book with everyone I know. I was already subscribed to Dr. Berry’s You Tube channel via my KETO diet plan research. I learned so much about nutrition from his videos that I decided to give this book a whirl. Dr Berry went into many subjects that needed researching and honest answers. It's refreshing to hear a physician that actually listens to his patient. I'd rather trust a doctor who can admit his mistakes and learn from them than a doctor who listens to no one and feels he has no mistakes made. Good work Dr Berry!

Absolutely loved this book. Such a wake up call. As a nurse on a journey of discovery and self help this book has been so helpful. I want everyone of my family and friends to read it. I had already seen some truths about nutrition so maybe I was easier swayed. I highlighted lots of areas and plan to read several of the recommended books.
I really liked the chapter formats. I have chronic fatigue and easily fall asleep when reading even when interested. It was much easier to concentrate with this format.
Thank you so much. Excited to see your next book!

Working in the health field makes me curious to hear opinions from each side, so this book caught my attention. Aside from the typos and repetitions, the book offers insight into alternative ideas to mainstream medicine. Hopefully more doctors will embrace a more holistic approach.

Largely emphasizes dietary advice, notably contrary to the food pyramid of the USDA and other agencies, and consistent with Atkins, South Beach, and Paleo recommendations. Also interesting recommendations regarding hormone levels and sunlight exposure rather than avoidance or sunscreen use. Persuasive.

Facts and fiction tend to overlap in everything, including the practice of medicine. Great book to shake your old neurological wiring and create an improved one. Patient and doctor are both responsible for Hippocrates oath to "do no harm"...this book makes you assess what you do outside the doc's office doors.

Dr. Berry,
If eating all the sodium I want is now an option, should I not be concerned about water retention in my extremities that this causes and also be concerned with edema and the risks of high blood pressure...etc... congestive heart failure?? Because that is exactly what happens when i consume excessive amounts of sodium. This is ok, I guess?
Then, as I had visited your website i've also noticed that you offer patients help if needed in weight loss by prescribing the use of Phentermine, Topomax and a list of other prescriptions?? How does this coincide with the Ketogenic weight loss lifestyle?
And....
According to your book I can use tanning beds with no concern for skin cancer resulting in excessive exposure to sunlight? In fact, it will make me healthier?
I want to like this book and I do like your youtube videos on Ketogenic weight loss, but looking at your website is really making me
question your motives?

Just wanted to thank Dr. Ken Berry for writing this book, because most people are afraid to talk about the things and great information shared. I really enjoyed this book and looking forward to the next one.

We have been taught so many things that are just not true! Bits of information have been accepted as truth and passed along for far too long! Dr. Berry does a great job of showing how these things happened and gives the truth. I bought the digital version of this book and loved it so much that I just purchased the paperback version so I can read it again and take notes.

I've eaten Pa!so for over two years and at 67 I feel great and I'm on no medication. A!! the while, friends, family and doctors have been convinced I would drop dead any minute. I was chastised using a number of the kids in this book. This gives me a concise place to have naysayers look for info.

There seems to be an overall lack of common sense these days in regards to medicine. Dr Berry has shed light on many issues and I for one am glad to learn the things that can improve my quality of life.

Very informative and educational. Dr Berry provides information in an easy to digest manner. Each chapter states the Myth/Lie, Why it matters, history of the belief and what to do about it, along with further reading if you’re interested. There is typically one belief discussed per chapter, so it easy to navigate to the subject(s) that matter to you.
It is an interesting and informative read, with only a little overlap for those familiar with his YouTube channel. Well worth the time.

Excellent excellent book! I applaud Dr. Berry for writing this book which reveals the lies that I've been told and believed (most everyone I know has also been told the same) throughout my life. The book makes complete sense as how to make sure you're asking your health care provider the right questions and confirming or debunking the answers you've been given. The book also contains a lot of good information that health conscious folks would be interested in. I eagerly await his next book.

I enjoyed this book because it speaks to many questions and theories on health that I have been suspicious of. It is very enlightening, informative, and thought provoking with research and information to back up the various subjects. Would highly recommend.

Should be required reading for patients and doctors; especially Primary Care Physicians.
Dr. Berry risks his all with this book, and this fact is an indication of just how much the medical profession has deteriorated over the years - or has it?
Anyhow, at least several of the myths he mentioned will pertain to you (sooner or later). Well written, well researched, and well done!

Critical thinking skills are so needed for today, especially in the area of health. This is a great read for those who try to make sense of t h e medical system but leave with more questions than answers. Great resource to start questioning the status quo!

Phenomenal book which provides great information in an accessible format with references for further information. We need more doctors who are actually interested in preventing suffering and disease rather than profitting from it. I think general practitioner s need to start providing a valuable service and that includes informed advice on optimizing health without gimicks. Great book!

I've followed Dr Berry on YouTube and he doesn't open his mouth unless he can back up what he is going to say with data. He put together such a great resource that should be required reading for both the patient and the doctor. I can't recommend this book enough, it will be the most lent out book that I own.

This book is amazing. Finally a medical doctor who debunks so many of the lies and myths we have been told by the establishment. I have always looked for information outside the box and have finally found it. Thank you Dr. Berry you are indeed my hero.

I am a Primal Health Coach ( through Mark Sisson) married to a Cardiologist. We both know many fallacies exist especially in regards to nutrition! This book isn’t preachy. It gives you books and links to explore more information at your leisure. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to regain their health.

Dr. Berry Is HOT! Like Fiyah...Neisha is one lucky LADY!
I doubt I could have said anything else that hasn't already been said here about this man and his work. Thus, I chose the shallow dumb blonde approach. REAL, HONEST, HUMBLE, INTELLIGENT, BRAVE, FUNNY and one hot ass human. Even my husband agrees! We love him.

Everyone should take a moment to put aside all their medical beliefs and pick this book up. Read it! Share it! I have learned so much, questioned my own beliefs and came out on the other side knowing I must share this information with others.

Great advice - after a few chapters recommended to a friend. Lots of good and knowledgeable advice. I knew I needed to change my diet and lifestyle and this helped me decide on what path to take. Thanks Dr. Berry for all your help!

Once I finished reading chapter one I couldn't research the topics fast enough. Dr. Berry explains things so anyone can understand them and in just a few weeks I was feeling the benefits of the small changes I was making. Read it and then read it again!

Quick, to the point, and with a splash of humor, I loved this book. This book blew my mind and confirmed many of the suspicions I’ve held about many medical “facts” for years, some since childhood. But, like the author says, do the research!

Shared a lot of information in an easy to read format. Makes you think about so much of what we have heard from the “authorities”. Now up to us to make more, educated decisions about our own bodies and health...with our doctors.

Dr. Berry cites numerous valid medical studies and uses common sense to blow up many of today's "known truths". You'll be reluctant to trust "conventional wisdom" again when it comes to health and diet.

Dr. Berry does an excellent job of uncovering many of the medical fallacies we have suffered from in the last 50 years. He covers the information at a good digestible level with resources to look at if you need more.

I enjoyed the book and information provided, but did find some of the chapters lacking substance. He sets the foundation to question what you consider to be common knowledge and in turn label it as common nonsense.

Saw Dr. Berry for an acute orthopedic injury. His no nonsense approach to what I could, couldn't and shouldn't do was refreshing. I will def. be reading this book as I am sure his insights are worth the effort.

I could write a book titled: Lies This Book Told Me, and it would have more detail and context. I haven't read a more ridiculous book on healthcare, especially one that goes out of its way to basically demonize physicians.
Please RateMedical Myths That Can Harm Your Health - Lies My Doctor Told Me
The most important takeaway from these books is to become informed,as best you can, when it comes to your own health choices. At the same time, do not make the mistake of believing everything these contrarians write. They are not intentionally misleading you but, regardless of the force with which they make their pronouncements, they are not know it alls.
One particular approach in these books that bothers me is the tendency to dismiss hundreds of studies as soon as the doctor finds ONE that fits his point of view. I've read a lot of medical studies and I agree that the quality of many is disturbingly low and others are blatantly biased by those who pay for them to be written. Those are real problems that have cost many people the quality of their life not to mention billions of dollars. However, citing one well written report screams of confirmation bias - and that's one of the things these authors are trying to caution you against. My advice: be skeptical of everything and don't stop your research at the first paper that agrees with your preconceptions.
Finally, there's no excuse for the dozens of typos sprinkled throughout the book. Whatever happened to editing and proofreading?
