A Gathering of Old Men is a good book to read if you like reading an entire book on one single day. I found the book pretty boring. I feel you only need about three chapters to write about one day. The book was long and drawn out. The only thing that made it somewhat interesting was the descriptions of the people and using different narrators. It does a great job of giving reference to southern racism and problems with land, money, and people. The way the book is written you can't tell if the author is black or white, male or female in that sense it's a real good book but you have to have a lot of time and patience. You would also have to be a young adult or an adult to understand most of the meaning, words etc... It has a lot of profanity and other inappropriate stuff in it for young children. The content of the book is mostly rated PG 13 but it slips up to R every once and awhile. Other than that it was an ok book that I would only recommend to older people.

Ernest Gaines, master storyteller, delivers again in this thought provoking novel. Set in 1970's Cajun country, 18 black men finally liberate themselves and discover an inner strength they never knew they had.

This book is a good depiction of a town in Louisiana in the 1970's. It shows the beauty of the surroundings as well as the racism of both white and black people in the south.
The old black men show unity of a black community. Whereas they don't rat on eachother, but say that they themselves murdered Beau.
This book was a good writing. Although I did not understand all of it. It is time consumer. So if you are to read this do it on your free time. On the scale from one to six I give it a four.

The book is a slow read but very deep. Very deep. Upon reading, I had a hard time thinking of this book in the 1970's and not in the 60's. That is a good writer. Reading this book was like cokking to me, it devolopes into a great story that speaks of black men doing what others, whites, do all the time, but with class and a brain.

In the book "A Gathering Of Old Men" talks about the 1970's in Louisiana, in a huge sugarcane plantation, by this time the social life was very racial, and diferent than how it is now. A white men was murdered and the sheriff though it happened at the hands of a black men, but there was to many people claiming to be guilty, but the sheriff knew than only one had done it. The language used in this story is more like how blaks talk. In my personal opinion this book is a good book but its to confussing at the same time. Its a great book for people who like to read a lot of science ficcion stories.

This book takes place in the 1970's, in a sugarcane factory in Lousiana. It takes place in a time when the blacks and the whites didnt get along. If there was a murder of a white person it was attamatically a black killer. There was alot of hatered going on between all of the people in the town. The language in this book was confusing beacuse they used words not usually used in english and that made it very confusing. They also called each other nigar which brought up a good discusin in our classroom. We noticed that we had alot of differance in opinion, some thought that it is just a word and others thought it was more. I think that this book was boring. I didn't like how it jumped from person to person. It was very confusing that is why i chose not to read it therally. I wouldn't suggest reading this book unless you enjoy to be bored. I would give this book a one because it didn't keep my interest.Don't read this, i am warning you.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone. A Gathering of Old Men is full of surprises. It keeps you turnig pages to find out what will happen next. It describes some of the things that use to happen in the south. It also talks about issues that were important like racism. It talks about real life. The novel also involes problems that we are facing today.

The book was very interesting and it kept my attention. I would refer this book to others. I was looking for a different type of book and one that reflected a different type of writing. I found all of this in this book, it was easy to follow and it gave the story in a very interesting manner.

This book given to me as an assignment will stay with me forever. This book displays what true friends and loved ones are all about. It also shows change is an important role in life and change can keep you safe from people who are blinded by prejudice.

This has got to be the boringest book i've ever read. The author milks and milks the already dried and much-explored area of racial tension and minority rights and black rights, etc; it's basically the same formula as every other black rights book. I do like the different points of view technique, but each characters failed to deliever a fresh sense to a tired issue. There cannot be a more typical book than this. Read one and you've read 'em all.

The book, A Gathering of Old Men is a unique description of a story about a white man who gets shot by a colored man. If you are interested in the civil rights act and segregation this is truely the book for you. The author used a complex perspective of different characters on the same story to express the different views of the plot. This book can get boring at times yet is in the end very interesting with the ironic twist. Overall I would recomend reading this book.

I believe that this book was well written. I enjoyed the book until the end of the book when the shootout begins. I think that Mr.. Gaines rushed too many events into the short ending. This book is by a far a great one, but I believe more time could have been spent on the ending.

I thought this book was a very moving book. I did not like all of the racial slander, but the book told it just like it would have really happened. It was slow to develop, and the ending was less-than-desired, but Ernest J. Gaines did an excellent job on this book.

I read this years ago when I was a librarian living in Texas and it was newly published. I reread it living in California for book club. It was marvelous the first time and marvelous the second time. People behaving as people, doing what they've learned and continuing to do so until a killing of a white man by a black man calls people to act and not react. Old men can learn new tricks, new ways of behaving and thinking, drawing closer to one another while appreciating those who have looked out for them in the past. Their learning and developing enabled others to grow also. A book to read and enjoy and learn from so that the reader perhaps can apply and learn new tricks.
