I absolutely loooove Julia Quinn, but this was definitely not her best..I didnt connect with the characters at all, and I found myself struggling to finish it. It did, however, have it's charms...and Ms. Quinn is definitely still among my favorite authors....read her Bridgerton series...now that is entertaining...

I LOVE JQ for her witty characters. I almost always finish the book in one sitting but this time I got fed up. I really liked Bella in splendid, but she ended up being whiny and childish in her own story. I rather liked John, who really did have good reasons for his demons, even if he tended to act atrociously. Overall I thought both of their actions were immature and poorly thought out and I expected a higher level of maturity and character development than the novel delivered.

I thought this book would be dark, but it was far from it. So funny in parts I cried. In other parts so sad I cried. Recommending this book is a delight. One is enthralled from start to finish. Thank you for such a wonderful story again, Julia Quinn.

I have read almost all of Quinn's books. I have enjoyed most of them.

This story was ok. It was kind of boring at times. It didn't have enough substance. All of her books seem to follow the same story lines, without much variance except for it being a different family member. Im tired of the Bridgerton family.

This book lacks the humor that many of her other books have. I began reading the Bridgerton series first and have since then decided to read all of Julia Quinn's books. However, this is the first one to really disappoint. I just couldn't see any chemistry or like any of the characters.

I was doubtful of this being a good book before reading it as I read the reviews, but they were completly wrong!!! Both characters were strong and down to earth. Julia Quinn did a great job. The plot had many dimentions and the story well developed. I have never written a review before, but I felt so compelled that the other bad reviews were not deserved that I really wanted to dispute them.

Having read and loved all the Bridgerton novels, I decided to go back and read some of Julia Quinn's earlier efforts. This book was a total waste of time. I just kept skipping through it hoping it would get better but it never did. Belle and John were just totally annoying and I found Belle's insistence on "helping" John with dangerous situations just plain asinine. Also unbelievable was the fact that she was melting down to skin and bones after just 3 days of being ill. Thank goodness, Ms. Quinn's writing improved with age. This book is going in the garbage.

I was really disapointed after reading this book.
I really enjoyed Quinns other books and thought this one was just as good.
But it was not.
Belle is much more fun in SPLENDID and the "hero" John Blackwood is dull and oh so boring.
There is a lot of talk about Shakespear and poets and poetry. Belle even nags the poor boring John about writing her a poetry.
The best thing about this book is that it includes the people from SPLENDID. It's always nice "meeting" them again.
I'm so sorry, Julia Quinn, but this time you just lost your magic touch.

Not her best, but surely another great read from Julia Quinn ! I love the characters with their usual humor and engaging dialogue. Also check out a fresh voice in romance from a male author -Shade of the Maple by Kirk martin. Very deep with great insight, perfect by the pool. Saw it highlighted as a Top Pick in Romantic Times. Keep them coming, Ms. Quinn!

The storyline was very weakly written. Also, when will authors learn, if they're going to write historicals, please use period-appropriate language? If an author can't do this, stick to contemporaries.
Please RateDancing at Midnight (Blydon Book 2)
