I'll keep this short, as my one less-than-complementary review will probably matter little to the legions of readers who seem to have enjoyed "The Lost Colony." Colfer displays some inventiveness, but he takes an "everything but the kitchen sink" approach to world building, and the result simply doesn't work. Colfer seems to invent new bits of magic and wizardry on the fly, so that there's literally no difficulty that his characters can't escape with just a snap of their fingers. Even a fantasy world needs to be governed by some rules. Moreover, his characters (Artimis Fowl in particular) are unappealing and evolve little throughout the course of the book, and his writing is fairly artless. Truly, I don't know why this series is so popular.

This book, like all of the other of Colfer's books (with the exception of Wish List) was great, but somehow didn't settle with me. For one thing, I didn't exactly appreciate the hanger at the end, and the progression of the story wasn't exactly one of Bond's great endeavors. While reading, I felt that the plot was to similar to those of the prequels, such as, calling in a criminal we meet at the beginning to be our Dues ex Machina. But don't let me keep you from reading this book. It was highly remarkable, and if I could, I would give it a 4.5

Artemis Fowl: The Lost Colony is a great book. Its author is Eoin Colfer. This is the fifth book in the Artemis Fowl series. This book is a fantasy. It has fairies, demons, and dwarfs.

In this book Artemis Fowl and his fairy friend, Holly, with the help of a friend, Butler, try to travel in time. There is a new family of fairies lost in time. After a great war with humans, the Demons jumped out of time, taking their island with them. Artemis tries to save the demons before time runs out. A young demon, who does not feel at home on the islands, helps our heroes in their quest.

I really liked this book. Eoin Colfer is a mastermind of literature. He keeps you guessing until the very last page. This was not my favorite of the series. Although that is true, it is still a wonderful book.

Artimis Foul and the Lost Colony

Book Review by: Landon Caudill 7B

Artimis Foul and the Lost Colony is a fantasy story. It is written by Eoin Colfer.

This story is about a young boy about 15 years old that is very smart and has friends that are elf-fairies that live under ground. These elf-fairies are only one of the species of fairies; some others are demons and warlocks. Warlocks are in another dimension, but demons did live in the same dimension as the warlocks but one day while the demons were setting a time warp thing to keep that planet from changing dimensions a warlock named n-zal destroyed the circle of demons and they were thrown in a volcano. It killed some and turned the others to stone. N-zal was thrown in the volcano too but he was sent to another dimension before he was burnt and he also went with a demon and stole his magic, but never told anyone after he got back from earth to his dimension. After N-zal got back to his planet he was worshipped and was placed as the unofficial leader of the tribe. Meanwhile, back on earth Artimis Foul has calculated the appearance of the next few demons that will materialize on earth as a result of the time tunnel on their planet wearing off. He goes to one in Italy and then another one somewhere on the other side of the earth. The second one that he calculated was in a theater during a production. The only funny thing is Artimis noticed something. Someone he had seen at the first appearance was half way around the world at the second too; this could not just be a coincidence. When the demon arrived, sure enough the people made a distraction, and captured the demon. Artimis knew that now that another person knew about the fairies that there whole fairy world could be in danger, so they went out to rescue the baby warlock (imp). Once they found out whom the group was they found out where they were going, and they got some help from another elf-fairy that was a criminal and they offered him full pardon if he would drive a car for them and help rescue the imp. The group they were going to rescue the imp from was lead by a girl a little younger than Artimis. During the rescue the elf- fairy Artimis' friend was captured but it was all worked out in the end. The only problem is that one of the girl's bodyguards turned against her and threatened her father unless Artimis brought the imp back. Artimis had started to like the girl, and so he called the guard to set a place for the swap, the girl for the imp. The place the guard chose was all the way on the other side of the world too, and they only had a day and a half to get there. When they got there they had to go to a hotel on the top floor in the lobby was a huge silver statue, and did I mention that silver is what holds you in the dimension you are in, so Artimis's plan was to make the trade and have the imp (N.O.1) pull off a band of silver and be sucked away but brought right back to the statue where Artimis was waiting. When they were leaving they saw a statue of rock that had the same symbol as N.O.1 and then N.O.1 told them he had something he thought was magic so he thought he was a demon, so they went and got lucky and N.O.1 freed a demon. By that time the guards noticed and followed Artimis and brought a bomb. Artimis went with Holly (elf- fairy) and the demons carried out the window y Holly's wings, and then took off the silver so they went to the warlocks planet. After they got there Artimis still had the bomb and so they used it as the power source for doing the time tunnel again with the help of N-zal or should I say the demon he trapped for magic and saved the planet right before it destroyed itself. Artimis got back to earth but it was three years later on earth. The End.

I loved this book a lot, and I would recommend it to people that like intense books that are son good it is hard to put them down. It is a good book for anyone that can read at its level.

As my title indicates, I was a little disappointed in this latest offering from Eoin Colfer.

On a positive note, the writing was fast paced, witty and full of the usual unexpected twists and turns that surround Artemis and Holly. Then throw in characters like Diggums, Doodah Day and Foaly, and you have all the necessary ingredients to make a interesting A.F. adventure.

However...although this book started of well (typical of all the Artemis Fowl novels), the plot and quality of story telling seemed to change (and not for the better) about half way through. It was at this point, (SPOILER...) Artemis, Holly and the others with them, had to start to travel through time and space; and while this sounds like it should be very interesting, I found it to be somewhat out of context with the rest of the novel (and in fact other A.F. books). As a consequence I struggled through the last third of this book and (unlike other A.F. books) was actually glad to be finish this one.

Not a bad book; just not as good as the others. 3 Stars

Artemis Fowl is a 14 year old criminal mastermind. In the first few books Artemis steals and is a criminal. Then in this book, he becomes a do-gooder. Almost. In the beginning you learn that demons are materializing without warning on Earth. If Artemis doesn't stop them, their island, trapped in time, will explode causing some demons to end up on the moon, in space, or on Earth. Most will die and the ones that survive will end up in zoos and museums. It would be bad for the demons, humans and elves, who live underground on Earth. This book is exciting, funny and full of action. Best one yet!

All of your favorite characters are back, in this fifth book of Eoin Colfer's New York Times Bestselling series. I thought this was the best Artemis Fowl book yet. It was a real page-turner. Artemis is 14 now and I think that this makes the series better because he doesn't stay the same age. He informs us that he is now going though puberty. At first Artemis and Butler are awaiting a demon to pop up. Artemis is trying to find out why demons are popping up randomly though time and space. The imagery of the demons reminded me of the Gremlin Movie because they look cute and cuddly until they become bloodthirsty. Then they warp into a freakish demon. Interesting to note they only have four fingers on each hand. After Holly left the LEP she became a bounty hunter but this was harder for her to help the people. Eoin Colfer is a master of the unexplained. With the demons, LEP-recons, and other mystical creatures. In short this book keeps you on the edge of your seat. You will find yourself wanting to know what is going to happen next. The end of the book will not disappoint.

Do you like demons and wonder where they came from? If you do, then you are in luck, because this book is everything you need to know about them and how number one, an imp, finds out his place in the world.................. Want to find out more about this great adventure of Artemis Fowl saving the world? Then read the book!

First off, I am 14 i just used this account so i didint have to give out an email adress:) WOW, this book was one of my favorite books of all time. I love how Eion decides to branch out and create a whole other world for Artemis to explore. I really liked the ending of this book as well. Throughout the whole book there seemed to be no slowing in the action or suspense. Its so amazing how Eion can create such genius in these books. You often wonder just how he thinks of it... I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone. You will NOT be disapointed.

If you are familiar with the Artemis Fowl product, suffice it to say this is number 5, similar to no.s 1-4, no worse, and certainly no better than the first. If you don't know Artemis, let us say the series is a decent scratch for a Harry Potter itch, a fun read, though perhaps with less developed characters than in HP. All around enjoyable, fun reading.

The book I read was Artemis Fowl the Lost Colony. The author of this book is Eoin Colfer. This book is a fiction and I think it is a fantasy. This is the fourth book in the Artemis fowl series. Artemis fowl has to save the fairy world again. The demon colony is what this book is all about.

Artemis finds a demon and figures out the island is lost in time. The spell that put it there is unwinding. It is up to Artemis, holly, and n1 to save the island. I think this is the best book in the Artemis fowl series. I liked it a lot and I think people who like adventure and fantasy will enjoy it. That is my review for Artemis Fowl The Lost Colony

This was an amazing book!!!! Eoin Colfer just keeps getting better. Ihope he'll continue with his other series. the only downside to this book is the whole 3 years in the future and Minerva and the eye thing between Holly and Artemis. i was watching a concert the other day and had a strange impulse to jump up and yell Brava Brava just like Artemis does in the book. MAKE A MOVIE SOON PLEASE

This book in my opinion was the best AF book out of all 7. This book was filled with lots of great action and it had so many things going on that fell into place near the end to make an amazing, awesome book. GET THIS BOOK!!!But you have to read the first four before you read this book or else you wont like it as much.

Purchased the Audio CDs for travel, and just like the other 4 books, Nathaniel Parker does an excellent job in narrating. If you enjoy Jim Dale (Harry Potter Series), you'll enjoy Nathaniel Park too.

Book 5 offered a lot more comedy (to me) than the previous 4 books, but also kept the adventure and suspense as a well. Like every Artemis Book, it leaves you wanting more. Book 6, 7/15/08!

After four books the Artemis Fowl series has been running lean. My fav one before this was number 3 The Eternity Code, but as soon as I even go half-way through this book it became my fav. The Lost Colony puts Artemis and his friends through the same activity they have been doing most of their life, Saving the World. This time it is Saving the World from a colony of angry and wild Demons trying to attack Earth. Lost Colony goes through ride of plot twists and action till the final confrontation is made. Lost Colony is a spectacular ride through Intense Action, Humor, Intwined with a little romance.
Eion Colfer does the best job he has ever done as a writer in this one as it is a must read.

Arty has done a lot in the last few years and though most of them involve the direct exposure of the People to the Mud Men, this book puts more than just the People on the line. Arty has learned humility twice over and has embraced this newest adventure with his usual genius and now irritating hormones and saves the day again. A great read; light, witty, fun and endearing. I recommend all of this series to anyone.

I was brought back to children's literature by a passion for Harry Potter, and I haven't been disappointed by Artemis Fowl. Although not as epic as the HP world, Artemis Fowl books have been very enjoyable. This latest one is especially good, with a fast-paced tight plot and fun lines. The Artemis/Minerva reference is a bit of a groaner, but such is life. From an adult perspective, this series illustrates the progression of a cynical, brilliant, bored, disaffected youth into a caring, involved, ethical and brave individual. What we hope our own children and our society to be. Artemis Fowl fills me with hope, and I recommend it to anyone!

That was by far the best book yet. It is probably going to be my most favorite throughout the entire series. When I read other A F books I'm like "yay let's read," but that was all I could think about when I was mewhere else. This one was more adventurous as ever. It was absolutely incredible. I just started reading Artemis Fowl and i can already tell it is going to be my favorite series. This series is a great story about friendship, loyalty and the underworld. but with this series, its is very important to start at the first book and read to the last book in order. This specific book was the most interesting, but not the best. (IMO).

This is the British/U.K. edition of the book; probably also the one they sell in Ireland (where the author resides).

The story looks pretty good so far, and seems to be a worthy sequel, but I haven't finished it yet; I'm publishing this review prematurely because I want to get this info up on the page first so nobody else is surprised by ordering it.

I read half of this book at a friend's house. That was six months ago.
When i re-read it several weeks ago, I was shocked. The quality of the writing is awe inspiring. The plot is well written. There are so many shockers that...wow.
I never expected how good this would be.
I loved the ending.
Can't wait for the next one!

I'm 14 years old and I absolutely loved this book. I couldn't put it down and have to say if you have read the other Artemis Fowl books and haven't read this one yet, you NEED to read this one ASAP. It is a bit more emotional than some of the other books but is a VERY, VERY GOOD book and I recommend it to anyone. Kudos to Eoin Colfer. He's an awesome author.

I read these books to my son at bedtime. As a general rule, I like the Artemis Fowl books, even though I don't particularly care for the main character. I enjoy the colorful supporting cast and the clever writing. Unfortunately for me, I think that the author got a little carried away with expanding the non-human world for my taste. The book seemed like it wanted to be 2 things at once. It kind of switched from one story to another 2/3 of the way through. I read the last 80 or so pages out of duty. Frankly, I didn't care if Artemis made it home or not. Having said this, I am not a writer, nor could I conceive of such a novel, let alone 5 of them (up to this one; there's a 6th). If you enjoy the Artemis Fowl books, you probably need to read this one anyway. You'll probably like it more than I did.

The Lost Colony is an epic journey through time and space. Artemis Fowl, the criminal master mind who is only 14 years old, travels through time encountering many gnomes and elfs. Some who help him and some who dont help him. Artemis Fowl along with his body guard, "butler", help save the world, and the demon world by helping prevent the exposure of these creatures.
Artemis, butler, holly the pixie, mulch the gnome, N*1, and Quinn the worlocks, all join forces against Billy Kong. A crminal known for murder and collateral damage. By using science physics and some luck this band of heroes can help save the world.

Averaging one a year, Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl series is no rush-job, I am increasingly enjoying and looking forward to every entry more than the Harry Potter series. Colfer's magical world just seems more accessible and imaginative. And he is constantly changing the type of story rather than just another labored part of a single massive arc.

Slightly longer this time around, the book has Artemis tracking demon activity on the time-displaced island of Hybras. The time spell which keeps Hybras stuck in oblivion is beginning to unravel and Artemis is busy investigating how to fix it when a 12-year-old French female rival (and love interest) kidnaps an insecure, classically educated demon, just as he manifests on Earth, right under Artemis' nose. Not knowing what trouble she has started, Artemis must break into her chatau, travel to Taiwan and match wits with her psychotic security in the Taipei 101 Tower to get the demon back before travelling to Hybras to fix the time spell with Captain Holly in tow.

I especially like the relationship between Artemis and Holly. Once enemies but now close friends. And the ending, not only including an imaginative and pretty damn cool twist, in which they become a part of each other forever (not giving anything away) was a nice touch.

As usual it's packed with ultra-technology that always seems realistic now matter how far-fetched, the typical amount of globe-trotting and the right amount of humor.

Artemis Fowl is definitely the best fantasy boy-hero. Harry Who?

I admit I had a moment of doubt when I first saw this book. It's always the old, "Can the author pull it off AGAIN?" question.

He did. The Lost Colony is everything we've come to expect from Artemis Fowl, including humor that had me cackling out loud and drawing strange looks from my family. I can't wait for the next book.

I have read and own all of the Artemis Fowl books and so far this one is the best. It has the same storyline as most of the Artemis Fowl books except it is enhanced it with as much new characters as Eoin Colfer can pack in without confusing the story. As normal the imagery is crystal sharp and draws you in farther and farther into the story. It uses many literary devices to give the story complexity. An amazing thing that Eoin Colfer is able to do is he is able to introduce completely alien ideas to our minds and makes them make sense. He uses this magnifencently and makes a masterpiece.

This book is very, very actiony and suspenseful. It is also confusing. There are a lot of references to space and time and quantum physics. It may be hard to follow the story. But this doesn't annoy me too much because most of the people reading this would understand everything. Eoin Colfer has managed to turn the plot of what may otherwise be a short story into a thrilling 385 page novel.

I read this book because I loved most of the other books. I was soo disappointed, though. I'll never read it again. Artemis just doesn't seem like Artemis. He doesn't talk the same, or even really think the same. Butler's lost his charm as well. I laughed once throughout the entire book (which is pretty freakin sad considering it's not hard to make me laugh) and that was only because someone said something $tupid. Though these books were really written for 9-12 yr olds, i always thought Artemis was hilarious, as well as Butler. Anyway, this books was BORING. very, very boring. after about half way through this 4oo pg book, I remember thinking "Are you kidding me? we're already *half* way through and nothing interesting has happened???", and i kept waiting for it to get funnier, or more interesting, etc. well, it didn't. I pretty much hated 12 year old Minerva's character, and Artemis' constantly made obvious attraction to her was just annoying. Even the end battle was boring as heck. Holly isn't funny anymore, and doesn't have any charm to her anymore, either. which is a shame because she was my favorite character. I won't bother reading the next book. I wish i hadn't read this one, either. it kind of tainted the whole series for me. I'd prefer remembering it how it used to be, where any age could enjoy it, but now it seems only a 9-12 yr old could enjoy it..

Of course if you've read one you've read them all. the amazing and riviting Artimis Fowl series comes back for a spectacular sequal, yet again. Artimis is trying to find a demon in the streets of Sapin. He almost has him, but is yanked back by Butler. Now when a demon gets into the wrong hands the ex-LEPricon Agent and Mulch Diggums must team up whith the young criminal mastermind to save the world and the secrets of the fairy world.

Artemis Fowl is Brilliant, another exceptional story written by the great Eoin Colfer. This product as an audio CD book. Read by Nathanial Parker who puts every ounce of realism into his art. The voices are the same as in previous Artemis Fowl book CDs. The CD's are packaged in a cardboard slip case as with the previous book. No plastic jewel case so teat with care. Not available anywhere in England so had to order from the USA. Well worth the effort. Simply brilliant.

This book is just as interesting as the previous ones, starting with Artemis Fowl. The winsome folk that live underground are so much more interesting than the ones above, except for Artemis and Butler. I am always amazed how an author can think up such subjects to write about and continue to make it exceptional reading. My teen grandson introduced this writer to me. I have bought every one since and read them before I give to him. This will take you away to another space. Start with Artemis Fowl and read them all.

Once again, Artemis Fowl is back for another crazy episode. This time he is traveling time and space...

2,000 years ago, a great war between fairies and humans raged for the land above ground. The fairies eventually realized that they were losing the war, and all decided to hide below ground. Well, all but a signle family of fairies. The demons. They gathered their warlocks and cast a time spell, but something happened to disrupt it, and now the spell is crumbling, sending demons to random points in time and space. Even Foaly is stumped by the degeneration of the spell, and it seems only one person has the wits to solve the case. Artemis Fowl, the greatest mind known pretty much ever, has seeming figured out all of the patterns in the disintegration, and has outwitted even Foaly again. However, there seems to be another party able to work just as well as Artemis. Is there another genius around?

I found this book a bit disappointing compared to the others. Too much seems to happen all in the space of a few chapters, and I as confused at times. Some of the things that happen are fairly ridiculous too. However, I would still recommend this to fans of the series. In light of these flaws (It felt sorta rushed) I give this title 4 stars.

The latest in the Artemis Fowl series and the best yet. The books are getting a bit darker and scarier - people actually dying in the last two - but still greatly enjoyed by my whole family from the ten-yr-old up to the 57-yr-old. The fabulous Mulch Diggums surfaces again with the obligatory quota of fart jokes, there's an engaging new character and a great twist at the end (shhh). These are well-written, snappy, pacy books with not a surplus word in them. JK Rowling take note!

I read all the Artemis Fowl books and this is the worst one. You'll've to endeavor to find the main story. Albeit you know this is a FAIRY tale as all the series's books, the other books are always in the main path but not this one. Maybe if this book was written with 50 or 60 less pages would be as good as the other four. I don't know if it'll be another book of this series but if not you can skip this one and if yes the sixth book must be an excellent one to read.

This phenominal book is definitely one to add to a timeless collection of sci-fi fantasy books. For those who are familiar with the series, this addition to the Artemis Fowl collection gives you the same great feelings that were produced reading other Artemis Fowl books. I enjoyed the book. Artemis Fowl, as well as Holly, Butler, Mulch, and the rest are becoming more developed, more well-rounded characters, and I have enjoyed the progression of Artemis' development as the series has progressed. These are fun books with no real deep meaning, which is just fine at times.

I highly admire Eoin Colfer for his inventive and unique storytelling and creative characters. However, this latest book is the tacked-on-sequel the others were not. Not only does he introduce plot elements not even hinted at in the previous books, so much that the reader is left confused, but the pseudoscience of the time tunnel and the island of Hybras go against the grain of his previously well-done science and magic integration. I found it difficult to suspend disbelief, a feeling I never experienced in his other books. Thanks, Mr. Colfer, but its time you moved onwards from little Arty.

This is by far one of my favorite series of all times. It far surpasses HP in my eyes (I know, blasphemy, right? LOL) I love the twist on the ending and the set up for the next book (there WILL be a next book, right?) A must read for anyone who enjoys the blend of genres and Eoin Colfer.

As usual Eoin Colfer takes us into the world of the Elves with our No1 criminal Artemis Fowl. But is the young lady who appears in this book to be his nemesis or love interest. You wont find out till the end.

The Artemis Fowl adventures are clever, easy reads.
The stories are fun, the characters engaging. There
is lots of magic and adventure. This book is pretty
similar to the others in the series. It would be
helpful to read some of the earlier books first.

This was an awesome book, not to repeat myself. The whole thing was suspenseful, and the ending was AWESOME-I want to find out about Artemis' younger brothers(or sisters, I don't think it said). But I'm not spoiling it. I DO want you to read it, after all.

I think that this book is one of the best books that I ever read, and especially the best book in this series so far. I recommend this book to people who like fantasy and science fiction and big chapter books. I'm 10 years old and read a lot and I think that this is a very, very good series.

That was the only thought that could come to my mind when I read this book. I have been avidly reading Artemis Fowl for a long time and this one I have to say is my favorite. God, such emotion I really can't describe it. Well kudos to Eoin Colfer because it was fantastic.

i have to say i was very glad when i heard he was writing another artemis fowl, and boy, this was the best yet, i laughed out loud every time his puberty kicked in, it was hilarious when he tells butler, "we're planning a june wedding",he's talking about him and minerva,he had just gotten off the phone with her, that is that funniest line in the whole book. hope any fan enjoys it as much i did,(and still do, of course). later!!

I loved this book the only downpour was the ending because butler retires, minerva is 15 (he is still 14) so she's older, and at the end what does it mean by twins? Still a awesome, sweet, great, splendid (this is what N1 does), super. book.

Eoin Colfer needs to stop. No, really. This book disappointed me to no end. I simply adored the first book. I mean, how cool is it to be rooting for the bad guy for a change? But then, Colfer began making Artemis a completely different character. He made Artemis come over to the good side. NO WAY! Bring back the criminal Artemis of old! This book was just plain weird. If I were you, I would read to book four or so, then stop. It all goes down hill from there

Although some of these books in the series dont seem too bad....this one has magic, demons, wizards, spells, and all the things Christians do NOT want their kids to read. We believe in spiritual battles and its no wonder they are eminent in homes where books like these sneak their darkness in between the book covers...
