This time travel romance is one of the best I've ever read! I first read the book many years ago, and still have the hardcopy on my "keeper" shelf. The book is sublimely written, the story that unfolds, completely enthralling. As for the characters, OMG, they are amazing! I absolutely loved Dougless and Nicholas. The chemistry between the two is explosive, and the love that grows between them, palpable. While reading the book I was consumed with a myriad of emotions, not the least of which was sorrow. The ending of the story is nothing short of genius. By the time I finished the book I was both happy and sad. Of course I was overjoyed that Dougless and Nicholas had found each other again, but a part of me couldn't stop thinking about all the years that Nicholas had to live without Dougless, after she returned to the 20th century. Bottom line, this is without a doubt the best time travel romance I have ever read...and I've read a lot of them. The second best time travel romance I've ever read is, "Remembrance" also by Jude Deveraux. I loved this book and would highly recommend. Reading it was an out-of-this-world experience for me. BTW this is not a clean romance. Happy reading.

This is the book that first made me a life long fan of Jude Deveraux. A time travel romance, Douglas and Nicholas will have your hearts and you will not be able to put it down. This book I have read over and over again and I never lose my love for this story. I have this in both hardcover, paperback and on my Kindle Fire and My Nook Tablet. Read this book today and you will not regret it. In fact read all her Montgomery novels. I miss her historical romance novels and wish she would go back to writing them again.

I once strongly suggested The Host – one of my favorite books of all time – to my mother-in-law. In return, before I move, she insisted I read this book for the same reason.

For probably the first half of the book I was wondering WTF?! Nicholas seemed like a big womanizing jerk and Dougless (the name irritated me, but meh) seemed like an irritable, naïve doormat. Yet, by the end, I LOVED IT. I don’t usually like time travel romance, but I thoroughly enjoyed how this one worked.

I have never seen a better example of character growth in a book than what I read of Nicholas and Dougless in this book. The reactions of the characters to being thrust in unfamiliar surroundings is realistic, and the description of the 16th century paints an incredibly vivid picture. It was just a very well-written book!

The ending is controversial, and to understand why, you’ll have to read or you’ll spoil it. However, I can’t imagine a different ending in any way and I was completely satisfied.

A Knight in Shining Armor is a fantastic read that surprises you. I went from wanting to slap the characters to being unable to stop turning the pages. It’s a truly transformative read that I recommend to any hopeless romantic!

**I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.**

This is my favorite book of all time I read it again a couple times a year. I believe this is the book that started me deep in the romance reading when I was younger...... I have had to replace this book many of times I loan it out and I don't get it back. So, now I have my paperback and e-copy and e-copy is the only way I will let them borrow it now. This book is sweet, romantic, funny (actually made me laugh out loud!), unrealistic (but who cares?) and has a lovely feel of history. I thoroughly enjoyed this read from the first page. If you like a romantic / time travel story you can just sink back into the sofa with a cup of tea and just get lost in, this is for you. What a great way to spend a lazy Sunday!! I loved this book and would definitely recommend it.

I read this 25 years ago for the first time and to this day, it is my favorite book. I am an avid reader and since the kindle first came out, I read much faster and devour books. I had re-read the book once a few years after the first time. Now I plan to read it again to see if I still would call it my fave. I still have my original paperback. When I finished it the first time, I loaned it to my sister who called me the next day and said she hated me. When asked why, her answer was that the book was so good she stayed up all night and read the whole thing. It was the first night her baby slept through the night and she stayed up. She still talks about it.

I have always been a lover of time travel stories. This is definitely one the best. 1st time I read it was the 1980's. At the time I was not a great fan of romance novels but this made me change my tune. I recommended this to several people and when my oldest started reading told her I enjoyed this tale. She read it and has never stopped reading since. My daughter now says she has read all of Jude Deveraux's stories. If you have not stumbled in to this author you are in for a real treasure. Enjoy

annoying... I remember reading this book when I was a teenager and I absolutely loved it. It was romantic and I truly enjoyed the time travel aspect of it.

This book is beautifully written by the author, I enjoyed the style of writing and the love scenes were sexy but tasteful. However, revisiting this book in my late twenties I can't find anything relatable about the main character Douglass. Call it growing up and coming into my own but I found Douglass to be frustrating to no end. This woman cries way too much to be believable. She spends a lot of time being trampled on and crying about it. I wanted her to have some backbone and to stop falling apart emotionally every time things didn't go her way or someone said something out of the way to her. I'm surprised the woman wasn't dehydrated by the end of the book with the amount of crying she did.

Additionally, it is a little dated for the modern reader/listener which was a little bit of a turn off but overall I enjoyed the actual plot of the book. If you can get past the weak "onion eyed" heroine then by all means, but I can't say I'd recommend this book for anyone who is easily annoyed by an overly sensitive leading lady who doesn't seem to overcome her crying until...wait she never over comes it, nevermind.

I came across this book while I was browsing through a library. I was skeptical about reading a paranormal time-travel romance, so I did not pick it up immediately. After I read some of Ms. Deveraux's other novels, I decided that I should give it a try. And, that was the best decision I made. This is one of the best books I have read in my life.

It is a truly marvelous story from one of the best story tellers of our time. It has captivated my interest right from the beginning. It is interesting to see 20th century through the eyes of someone from 15th century. Likewise, it is very interesting to see the 15th century life style. Ms. Deveraux has done a splendid job of portraying both the periods. She has brought the period alive through her description. I can imagine the extensive research that she had to do for this story. There are many twists and turns through out the story that will keep us captivated.

The characters are portrayed so well, they don't seem like fictional characters. It is like seeing real people go through real emotions. That made the story even more believable.

I would recommend this book to everyone.

I'm not a romance novel fan and I read this book for it's time travel aspect. For the longest time the heroine is highly unlikable. There was nothing to go on as to why these two people fell in love, other than some mystical magical feeling they each had. They shared no likes or interests. A Knight in Shining Armor

Once upon a time...
...as a fair maiden lay weeping upon a cold tombstone, her heartfelt desire was suddenly made real before her: tall, broad of shoulder, attired in gleaming silver and gold, her knight in shining armor had come to rescue his damsel in distress....

A Knight in Shining Armor:

I fell in love with this book from the very beginning. I found myself angry and almost volatile at Dougless' fiance and the flippant way in which he treats her. After a bitter disagreement between Dougless and and her fiance's daughter, she is left virtually penniless in an old church yard.

Moments later a man appears before her, demanding she send him back to his home at once. Needless to say Dougless is shocked at being treated thusly.

Throughout the course of the book, Dougless and Nicholas delve into a deep relationship and neither one understands the other is their true soulmate. When Nicholas is sent back to his time, Dougless falls apart and returns to the church in hopes of finding him again.

I won't ruin the ending for those who haven't read it, all I'll say is read it!

Jude Devereaux is one of my favorite writers and her skill at story telling bypasses many on the market today. Her rendition of the 16th century is so vivid, I could literally envision the scenery!

You must read this book.

In a word, this book is AWESOME. I enjoyed every page except for the first 15 pages. Don't let the first 15 pages make you put the book down; plough through them and you will LOVE the rest of the book. In the first 15 pages, the heroine Dougless was painted as the Ultimate doormat with absolutely no spine nor self-esteem. She let her jerk of a boyfriend take advantage of her and her money. I was afraid that she would make a boring heroine. But, keep reading, because, like I said, the rest of the book was wonderful.

Dougless's worthless boyfriend and evil daughter left her at a church in the English countryside without any money or passport. She mistakenly thought the ass was going to propose to her on this trip to England. She cried and sobbed at the gravesite of Lord Nicholas who died over 400 years ago. Her crying called him to her and you get to read about what he thought of modern day England, and their adventure to solve the mystery of who plotted against Nicholas long ago. Nic and Dougless also falls in love day by day. This is a wonderful TIME travel, Love story, and Mystery, as well as a super fun historical all rolled into one incredibly well written book.

There's more. Not only do you get to see the modern world today through Nicholas' eyes, you get to see historical England through Dougless' eyes too, as she had to go BACK in time to save Nicholas.

I really enjoyed this book and will read more of Jude Deveraux's books.

Back when A Knight in Shining Armor first came out in hardcover, I bought it, read it, loved it, and immediately started reading it again. I was at a friend's house sitting by her pool one afternoon and was pronounced "anti-social" because I had my nose buried in the book and was pretty much ignoring the conversation around me. So I said to my two friends, "Let me read you a little something, and maybe you'll understand why I can't put this down." So I started reading. Two hours and a sunburn later, the two of them were fighting over who was going to take the book home that night.

Okay, so why does everyone love this book so much? I can't speak for everyone, so I'll tell you what I think. It has something to do with change, and how love can enact that change. It has something to do with the thought of actually being able to change the past. And it has something to do with the thought of a love so powerful, so pure, so timeless that it will literally span the ages.

When we meet Dougless Montgomery, she comes across as a total lamebrained pushover. She's in a relationship with a guy who takes complete and utter advantage of her, so much so that in the early chapters of the novel you want to crawl into the pages, give her a good slap and shout "snap out of it" a la Cher in Moonstruck. The couple's long-awaited vacation to England doesn't turn out to be the dream Dougless was hoping for. Mr. Charm brings his equally obnoxious daughter along for the ride.

Dougless finally stands up for herself, only to be left alone in an English churchyard with no money, no passport, no man, no nothing. She starts sobbing atop the tomb of a long-dead knight when low and behold, the knight is suddenly standing beside her saying, "Well witch. You have conjured me. What do you ask of me?" He is Sir Nicholas Stafford, and he died in 1564. Dougless called him forth somehow, yet she has no idea how to send him back. So the duo embark on a history lesson of sorts, delving back into Nicholas' life to try to find the key that will unlock the portal back to the past. It's a journey that will lead both Nicholas and Dougless back to the 16th century where they will have the opportunity to "put right what once went wrong".

One of the most entertaining features of A Knight in Shining Armor is the "fish out of water" that Devereaux allows readers to experience - not just once, but twice. First it is Nicholas' turn. For a 16th century man in modern England, he does a marvelously good job of adapting, mostly because he thinks of the trip as a holiday. He belittles the quality of the clothes, loves tea, becomes completely fascinated by anything remotely electronic and, because he is a learned man, looks with awe on bookstores. He tries to keep Dougless at arms length, but the two quickly become so protective of each other that it becomes impossible for him not to experience real "affection" for her.

From a reader's perspective, Dougless' trip back in time is infinitely more interesting, although not quite so amusing as Nicholas' adventures in the 20th century. When Dougless arrives in Old England, Nicholas doesn't know her. Determined to stick close and solve the problems that led to his premature death in the first place, Dougless passes herself off as the niece of the King of Lanconia (Devereaux afficianados will recognize her "credentials" as coming from her prior novel The Princess). Until Nicholas' sceptical mother can verify her claims, she keeps Dougless on at Court for entertainment value. Dougless knows a lot of songs and proceeds to fill the castle with Rodgers & Hammerstein tunes galore. In the meantime, she does her best to convince Nicholas that the two of them meant something to each other, going so far as to bake him brownies and fried chicken in an attempt to trigger his memories. She eventually spends so much time in the past that she gets used to wearing layers upon layers of clothing and eating fifteen course meals. Devereaux gives a real history lesson in the daily practices of life inside a nobleman's keep.

I don't want to give away much of the plot because it is one that I have always found completely beguiling. Nicholas and Dougless don't fall into bed immediately and it isn't love at first sight. They become friends in need and build a relationship that grows stronger and stronger with each passing day. . . years.

Witnessing Dougless' growth is equally fascinating. The mousy, put-upon schoolteacher has no choice but to accept the responsibility of what has been forced upon her. She begins to deal with her circumstances intelligently, yet she never sacrifices her basic innocence. For that is what Dougless is - an innocent who has trouble coping with the harsher aspects of life. Believing herself lacking in inner strength, she calls Nicholas forth. And it is not until after she is separated from him that she discovers a hidden depth of fortitude.

I don't know that I have adequately expressed my thoughts on this all time favorite. It entertains me. It teaches me. It moves me. It makes me wish I could conjure up something half as magical. But most of all, it makes me believe that there is a knight in shining armor out there for everyone.

I started reading Jude Deveraux with one of her other time travle romances, _Rembrance_. It was fabulous, and so I decided to move on into the world of Jude Deveraux's books. I had heard so much about _A Knight in Shining Armor_ that when I saw it, I imediatly jumped on it and walked out of my local book store with a grin on my face that was a mile wide for finding such a hard to find treasure. I got home and was at one entranced in Jude Deveraux's masterpiece. Let me just tell you that this book moved me very deeply and anyone who even remotely likes books should have a place in their hearts reserved for this one.
Dougless Montgomery is having a really bad day. It all started with her boyfriend's daughter Gloria. But, before we get into that, you need to know some backround of Dougless. She comes from the famous Montgomery family (does the name sound familiar? It should, Jude has about a million historicals dedicated to the family) and is their source of entertainment. When Dougless makes a mistake, her nose is rubbed in it. So, when she met the sucsessful doctor Robert, she decided to do something to make her family proud of her... she decided to marry him. Of course, Robert doesn't want the comitment, but that doesn't stop Dougless from trying to get him in her hands. When the two first move in, they decide to plan a trip to England a year from that day. Then, they will decide if they want to marry. Dougless puts her heart and soul into the trip, finding the most romantic hotels and the most informative stops, everything to make the trip a fabulous succsess, and to hopefully squeeze a proposal out of Robert. So, when Dougless sees a jewelry purchase made by Robert about a month before the trip for five thousand dollars, Dougless just about hits the roof in excitement. And, on their way to the airport, Robert says he has a surprise for Dougless. Thinking it is the proposal, Dougless just smiles and keeps her mouth shut about what she thinks is going on. But, at the airport, her dreams are squashed when Robert's horrible little daughter, Gloria pops up and it turns out that Robert's surprise was this little monster. Of course, Dougless has to pay for Gloria's plane ticket and she still has to pay for half of the trip even though Robert should be paying for Gloria and not her. You'd think that this would be okay because Dougless's family is rich, but she doesn't come into her inheritance until she's thrity five so at the moment she's living off a kindergarten teacher's less then flattering salery. But, Dougless just takes a deep breath and tells herself that Robert still has marriage intentions. Well, Dougless was wrong. That five thousand dollar purchase was for Gloria. Robert purchased an expensive diamond bracelett for his no good thirteen year old. So, Dougless just snaps. She's been forced to sit in the back of the car with the luggage, sleep on a cot in the hotel's and listen to Gloria long enough. While the three of them are viseting a church, Dougless lets Gloria have it. Robert and his snotty little girl leave Dougless stranded in the country without her money or passport. She is left to starve. Sobbing, Dougless stumbles into the church and colapses in front of the tomb of Nicholas Stafford. Mournfully she cries out for her knight in shining armor. When she turns around, there he is. A man dressed in armor. He claims to be Nicholas Stafford. Dougless just thinks he's a nutcase and wants to leave him to make it in the world alone, but he won't leave her. Dougless slowly starts to believe him, and wants to help him. For you see, Nicholas Stafford was to be executed in his own time for treason that he never comited. Together, the two look for the truth while Nicholas is introduced to the twentieth century. It is so precious to see him look at different things in wonder. But, as soon as the two fall in love, Nicholas is whisked back to his own time. Dougless must figure out how to get to him to help him save his honor, and is taken back in time, but to a Nicholas who doesn't remember her. Can Dougless convince him that she is not a luney or a witch? Will she have to sacrifice the love of their's that was able to last throughout time?
Whew! I really really really loved this book! Dougless and Nicholas seemed like real people to me, and I wanted to walk out onto the streets and meet them. Jude Deveraux is just fabulous at writing time travel. Some authors make the plot where everything is new to the hero seem so dull and unorigional. Not with this book. It is just wonderful to see Nicholas describe everything. Jude Deveraux is truly a gifted writer. I was already hating a character (Gloria) fifteen pages into the book. I also liked seeing historical England from a modern point of view. From descriptions of the steel corsets to revelations of ancient bathrooms, it was all new to me, and you get a little historical lesson through this book. _A Knight in Shining Armor_ is one of the few romance novels that I have sobbed in. This is most definitely a Kleenex book. And, while some other reviewers complained about the ending, I loved it. This book does end happily no matter what everyone else might say. So, if you want a wonderful romance that will touch you to your soul and make you believe in everything from time travel to true love, start hunting for a copy of this book and stock up on Kleenex. This book has a special place in my heart, and I know you will love it too. Good luck finding a copy of this classic!

When I started reading, I did not like the beginning. I told myself : I will give just another chapter, otherwise I will start another book". Well, I am glad I gave it a chance. On the following chapter things started to change. I really liked this book. It was my first time travel book and I enjoyed. The romance was nice. The heroine sometimes annoyed me, but okay. It is definitely a page turner. The only reason I didn't give 5 starts was because of the end. The end is like you want to eat a steak dinner and end up having Tofu. No longer hungry, but not satisfied...
But I truly recommend. It is absolutely worth reading.

This is by far one of the best books I've ever read. I should say listened to since I chose the audio book version. What a clever and well written story. I fell in love with the 16th century Lord. This is an incredible story that starts off with a woman going on vacation to England with her jerk of a boyfriend, who thankfully is only in the first part of the story. Then the story takes you on a journey of love that surpasses the boundaries of time. It is truly an unforgettable tale of a miraculous love affair, filled with passion, wit and true romance. The ending was a great and unexpected surprise. I could listen to this book again and again. It's that wonderful.

This was a good story, but it took me a while to get into it because the author repeatedly explained things over and over again, like her readers are idiots and didn't understand it the first time. Yes, we realize that a man from the 16th century is walking around in a suit of armor in modern England. Enough said, but she continued for the first few chapters to point out how awkward he looked in modern day and it was extremely annoying and hard to get past. However, once I finally got past that, the story was thoroughly enjoyable and I learned a lot about life during that era (hanging babies to the wall to keep them out of the way, etc). I would recommend this book, but be prepared to be put off by the author's doubt in your intelligence.

Dougless Montgomery is on vacation in England with her boyfriend, to whom she hopes to be engaged soon. What was supposed to be a romantic getaway for two turns into the trip from hell when Robert brings his obnoxious, scheming daughter, Gloria, with them, and them abandons Dougless in a Church in Ashburton, without even her purse! This being the worst in a string of bad luck lasting her whole life, Dougless breaks down, sobbing her heart out on the tomb of an English Earl from the 16th century who was to have been executed for treason.
1564
Nicholas Stafford, Earl of Thornwyck, is sitting in his prison cell, writing a letter to his mother, three days before he is to be executed for treason. Suddenly, he hears a woman sobbing as though her life is over. Try as he might to ignore it, this woman's cries overwhelm him to the point he can think of nothing else. The next thing he knows, he is standing in a Church, in front of his own tomb and face to face with Dougless.
Nicholas has come forward over 400 years in time, to solve a mystery. He had been wrongly accused of treason and needs to find out who his betrayer was. Dougless is in disbelief, thinking Nicholas is crazy when he tells her his tale. She was never one to turn her back on one in need though, so as she helps him find his way around, she comes to believe in the impossible, and finds herself falling in love with her own personal knight in shining armor.
However, as Nicholas and Dougless fall deeper in love, fate beckons once again. Nicholas is taken back to his time to face his execution, nonetheless. Dougless can't give up hope though, in spite of their seeming failure to save him from death. Now the impossible happens once again, sending Dougless back in time herself, to try and prevent the chain of events leading to the execution from occurring. Shock of shocks though, Nicholas does not remember her and in fact, he despises her! Can Dougless convince Nicholas her story is true, in time to prevent his death?
It is easy to see why Knight in Shining Armor remains a fan favorite of Ms. Devereaux's books. She takes a classic romance theme and alters it entirely, making it entirely her own. The plot flows seamlessly, capturing and carrying the reader along. She also weaves a lot of interesting trivia bits in, without detracting from the story, and gives a clearer picture of life in Elizabethan England.
The characters grow dramatically throughout as well. Dougless starts out as a weakling who will do anything to make someone happy, but by the end of the story, she has come into her own. She overcomes her feelings of inferiority to become a woman full of quiet strength and confidence. Nicholas starts off as a scoundrel, a womanizer, and a philanderer. As the story moves along, he is seen for the noble man he is... one who puts honor and family above all else, even himself and his dreams.
Whether enjoying this book for the first or the dozenth time, it is enchanting, guaranteed not to disappoint. It is a thoroughly engrossing read and one definitely not to be missed!

Excellent time travel story. I had a hard copy of this book about 15 years ago. I would read it about once a year. I was clearing out my hard copy library and decided to donate the book. A couple of years ago, I went to the local thrift store and they had a paper edition which stated it contained additional text. I bought it and continue to enjoy it. I would love to see a sequel.

First published in 1989, this read stands alone as a classic love story in the genre of romance. Recently updated to reflect the author's writing expertise, this well-loved novel is certain to become a favorite of those new to this spectacular love story.
On vacation with her surgeon boyfriend, Robert, and his difficult daughter, Gloria, Dougless Montgomery is tired of being the woman unlucky in love and life. When Robert and Gloria once again mistreat Dougless , they leave her stranded at a church in England. Drawn by her sobbing against his tomb, Nicholas Stafford travels across time from the sixteenth century to appear at Dougless' side. Though she is convinced that Nicholas is an actor living his part, she soon begins to believe that he really is from the past. As, together they travel the countryside trying to discover who betrayed Nicholas in the 16th century, Douglass patiently introduces Nicholas to modern culture in a touching and comedic turn of events. As they begin to fall in love, they begin to wonder if their love is even possible. Can they change history and prevent Nicholas from being falsely accused of treason?
As Dougless travels back to the sixteenth century, she soon discovers that Nicholas doesn't remember their being together. She carefully breaks down his defenses even as she enchants members of the Stafford household with her eclectic twentieth century repertory of songs and games. Even as their love comes into full bloom again, Dougless wonders if she can help Nicholas change history and be remembered for the remarkable man that he was.
With such a likeable heroine and to-die-for hero, this read is a romance to be savored again and again. Even as it highlights the awesome power of love, it is filled with just enough history to enlighten the reader without overburdening them with unnecessary details. A truly dazzling read!

Everyone was on me to read this book saying how touching and romantic is was and I have to say, they were right. Ms. Deveraux has a knack for getting to the heart of pure romance and in this book, she goes beyond expectation.
The characters were real and the time-travel was very realistic. Proving dreams and wishes can come true, only if you believe...
1988 England, Dougless Montgomery(distantly related to her Velvet book characters) is alone and weeping on a cold tombstone in an English church. Abandoned and left to fend for herself she cries her heart out and wishes for a knight in shining armor to come and save her. Suddenly like a ghost, a man appears before her looking very...confused? Why does this gorgeous man look confused and why is he wearing clothes obviously from a costume shop?
Nicholas Stafford, Earl of Thornwyck is confused...where is he? Last he knew he was praying in a church in 1564 and now he is standing in the same church, but everything seems different and he is looking at his own tombstone! He sees the woman, obviously she has called him from the past to do some evil deed for her, for she must be a witch.
Vowing to help this man since she somehow was responsible for his appearance, Dougless promises to make things right again. Her life is messed up beyond repair anyway, she is stuck in England for a month on 'vacation' abandoned by her boyfriend, so she is depressed and alone. Why not help this guy out?
Dougless soons finds out it isn't that easy. Nicholas needs to right a wrong in order to return to the past...
Nicholas shows Dougless that love is all-consuming and that she is special and deserves to be cherished. But time is running out for them...he must return. Can they live without each other?
Nicholas was a true Knight in Shining Armor.
I liked the first half of the book the best, lots of extremely touching and romantic and heart-tugging scenes. I sighed and cried and smiled many times. Definately a keeper.

I read this book 40 years ago! I still think about it. My family was on a vacation in Holland, and everyday we would go sightseeing and while driving we would read this book out loud. We had all ages, ages 3, 8, 10, 28, 30, 57. We all loved this book. I was thinking of suggesting this to book club and I thought I would see what the reviews were like and if book is still available. A good book never goes out of style. ?. This was so entertaining we couldn't wait to get in car and read.

I usually don't choose to read stories that make me cry, but this is currently my favorite book. This story makes you laugh a lot, but it definitely is a "tear jerker." A very sweet enduring romance. I think it is an excellent book, with a full range of emotions and lots of action. I thought I'd read through the one star reviews to see why these people didn't like it. Well, many of them don't like Romantic Fiction. Don't read Jude Deveraux if you're not into predictable romantic stories! I liked the main character, yes, she was insecure and she cried a lot. Many women have lowered their standards on men for the security of being loved. I could relate to her. Some people didn't like the ending. This is the only area where I could agree somewhat. I would have liked it to end differently. The happy ending is not quite as happy as I would have liked, but I have to accept the authors way of resolving things. If I could write to Jude to compliment this work, I would. This is my second time reading this book & it was just as excellent the second time around. So....much better than the movie Somewhere in Time, with Jane Seymour & Christopher Reeve.

In the opening scene of the book, the year is 1564 and we see the Earl of Thornwyck concentrating on a letter to his mother hoping to clear his name of the accusation of treason. Out of the blue, he hears a woman weeping and instantly feels her grief. As hard as he tried, he is unable to block the voice out...

In the year of 1988, Dougless Montgomery takes a trip to England with her boyfriend Robert under the illusion that she would get the marriage proposal that she's been waiting for. To her dismay, Robert takes his spoilt daughter Gloria with them who contrived to make her holiday a living hell. When after a disagreement Gloria lies to her dad, Dougless finds herself abandoned at Ashburton with no means to get back to their hotel. Shocked and outraged, she runs into the church and cries her heart out at the tomb of Nicholas Stafford, the last Earl of Thornwyck. Magically, her cries reach far beyond time and before she knows it, the knight in shining armor that she wished for appears right in front of her.

What ensues is a roller coaster ride for both. Dougless initially thinks that Nicholas is a madman. Though frantic and fearful of the stranger's state of mind, her compassionate nature takes over and she decides to oblige his "Elizabethan-era fantasies" in exchange for some much-needed money so she could get back to America. But what starts off as a simple gesture of assisting him, soon becomes more serious when Dougless realizes that Nicholas is indeed telling the truth, and she soon finds herself trying to uncover the reason why he's been transported. Together, they work to unravel the identity of the person who betrayed Nicholas in 1564, hoping to prevent his beheading and ultimately change the way history has depicted his character with such mockery. But as their adventure continues, both must fight the growing feelings they have for each other. For Nicholas, it is the fear of leaving her in such grief when he returns to his era, while for Dougless, it is the misconception of unrequited love.

A KNIGHT IN SHINING ARMOR is a delightful tale full of adventure, wit and excitement, with characters that are well-rounded and fully realized. I adored Nicholas' enthusiasm about modern technology and Dougless' soft-heartedness is very endearing. And even though she comes across as a pushover at the beginning, it is this vulnerability that endeared her to me, for here is a woman who aimed to please everyone, especially her too-perfect family, all her life and then she finally meets this arrogant aristocrat who appreciates her for what she is and doesn't find her wanting. And the love that develops between them is so sweet that I found myself crying in some part, half-dreading to get to the part when they would be separated.

This book is so worth the read. I've read a few medieval romances and I must say that this is one of the best. Sure, the plot is nothing unique - knight in shining armor rescues damsel in distress, but what makes this an extraordinary novel is the vibrant characters, well-detailed descriptions and just the sheer poignancy of the story that is guaranteed to enthrall.

This is my first book by Jude Deveraux and this definitely won't be the last. I plan on reading the other Montgomery novels from the beginning.

If you're after another great time-travel romance, I would also recommend Flora Speer's A TIME TO LOVE AGAIN. Now that's a real tear-jerker.

The best book Jude Deveraux has ever written. This is indeed the best book I've ever read. The story itself is very powerful and succeeds immensely at reaching to your heart. The heroine and hero are so fully developed and genuine that you come to love them.

Present-day Dougless Montgomery has been planning a trip to England with her boyfriend-- or hope-to-be fiancee. However, it turns around when this boyfriend of hers abandons her instead of proposing, as she expected. Lost in the middle of England with no food, no money, and no passport to return home, she goes to a church (with a particular tomb) and sits down and cries.

He has been betrayed. Nicholas Stafford is writing a letter to his mother-- a letter that will save his family, his fortune, and his life. While writing this letter, he hears a woman cry. Though annoyed, he gets up to tend to the woman. Surprise: Mr. Sixteenth Century finds himself in the twentieth century.

Dougless Montgomery, still crying, looks up to see someone by her. Not just someone, but one of the most gorgeous men she's ever seen. But (yes, there's a but) this beautiful man seems to be experiencing amnesia-- and he calls her a witch. He thinks he's from the sixteenth century and tells Dougless that the tomb she's crying on is his. That means he's been dead for more than four-hundred years. He is totally bewildered with the cars running on the streets and the jewelry-less clothing people choose to wear today-- but he explores everything of the modern-day world. Dougless just thinks he needs help. But she herself gets confused when the armor he is wearing contains real silver and jewels while the money he is carrying is genuine sixteenth century currency. However, she becomes convinced when he tells her something no one else knows. Together, she and Nicholas work together to discover who has betrayed Nicholas and try to clear up his name in history. As they are together, Nicholas decides that Dougless is the love of his life. Dougless realizes that there is more to Nicholas than that beautiful exterior, and it's what makes her always want to be with him. Nicholas knows that Dougless isn't as pretty as many other woman, but he's been around so many of them that he sees her innter beauty outshine her appearances.

Several twists are in this story that will keep you up all night. When I finished this story, I couldn't believe how good the book was. I just sat there staring at the last page. When I woke up the next day, I quickly picked the book up again and started re-reading it. One word: incredible.

This book is my favorite book of all times. The story plot is so well-built, the characters are very genuine, and the story itself is one that will leave a trace on your heart.

Dougless Montgomery is stuck in England without a passport or money after her boyfriend abandoned her. She starts crying and suddenly, a gorgeous, tall, broad, man appears wearing rare sixteenth century armor. This is Nicholas Stafford, who died in 1564 and is famour for romancing many woman and beheaded for treason. He, however, was innocent of the treason and apparently history overlooked all the good deeds he did. Dougless and Nicholas research his past as Nicholas explores all the wonders of the modern world. Everything from Playboy magazines to ice cream to whatever. They soon fall in love with each other, but then Nicholas vanishes.

Dougless wakes up and finds herself in sixteenth century England to change history and clear Nicholas's name... only Nicholas doesn't know who Dougless is.

I LOVE THIS BOOK SO MUCH! i was so overwhelmed with the story that i didn't read anything for two weeks afterwards. It was so good.

This was a story starting in the year 1988 with a meek woman named Dougless Montgomery who put up with so many selfish, overbearing, and demanding men just trying to find someone to return her love. She takes a trip with one such man to England, ends up arguing with his spoiled brat daughter, and is deserted by the two in a church holding the tomb of Earl Nicholas Stafford who died in 1564. Her utterly hystical crying while lying against his tomb calls him forward in time.

I enjoyed the storyline immensely.....however found him to be a snob and demeaning to her while he was in 1988 up until their last day together. I seemed to like him better when she went back to 1560 even though he still had that air about him that made me think she was never really good enough for him.

Ultimately, the thing that left me sad was the ending for the Nicholas of 1560........I won't spoil it for you........I do think it's well worth reading, but it won't be a do over for me. It is one of those books that you keep playing it over and over again in your head after you finish it.....trying to find a better solution to the ending....maybe a happier one where all is concerned. Read it......and let me know if you were a little sad in the end like me :(

This was the very first Jude Deveraux book I ever read. I fell in love and devoured it. I did not pick up another of her books for years though. I was very untrustworthy as a child of 15. I like time travel books sure. But NOT historicals. I had never liked on before. So why try again. The story of Dougless and Nicolas is not one you could ever forget. Dougless of Jude's Montgmory family is nothing like them. she does not fit in. She is in what Jude discribes as an alcoholic relationship. So desperate to be loved that she allows herself to be hurt over and over again. Nicholas who is only remembered for Arabella on the table but who was a grand lord. When her horrible boyfriend believes that she could hurt his daughter than no more reason but to be spiteful he abandons her in England cause she deserves it. She is rich andhe has a problem with that. No passport no money no nothing. She cries on Nicholas grave and he appears. Her knight in Shining Armor

at first i was turned off this book because the title was so cliche.

but they do say don't judge a book by its cover.

this book is wonderful! i have been thinking of re-reading it because i haven't read any good stories lately. i loved how she wrote of the main characters' emotions; you really get into the love story. and the time travel is fantastic!

i think this one i passed on to my mom and i had to get a new one for me, lol. i have since collected all of jude deveraux's novels from a used bookstore and have devoured almost all of them. i stay up nights reading them! i get so carried away in them. i have not met a jude deveraux book i didn't like; these books got me turned onto reading romance novels.

beware: you may actually cry at the end of this book. i'm not a crier but i was welled up! and it's been a looong time since i got involved in the characters of a book!! this is a book you will want to keep toting around with you from place to place because the story is so good.

happy reading!

This is one of my all time favorite books. It was one of the first time travel romance novels I'd read. Love love love it. Love the updates also. I read this in the o0s the first time, read it with revisions, it was a simpler time in the 80s when expectations were less and there weren't a thousand other books like it. I love Deveraux, shed still my favorite autor and I love the Montgomery family. Start from her first book and you'll understand everything.

This book was so interesting from front to end, i couldn't put it down. Each page makes you wonder about the next... I finished this book all in one night... I was yawning at work the next day. So I suggest, reading it during the day or when you don't have to work the next day. So far, It is one of the most intriguing love story I have ever read. At first, I didn't think I would enjoy time travel plot but as I read along, I got more into it. This book was amazingly written and described. It makes you feel as if you are inside the book itself. There were lots of funny scenes, Nicholas thoughts and ways of adjusting to the 19th century makes me laugh so hard yet I feel sorry for him too. Same reaction for Dougless when she went back t the 16th century. Dougless morning shower is what i like the best. The romance is very well written under such circumstances. However, I wished Dougless ended up with the Earl of Thornwyck's (Nicholas) descendants. That would really show that insensitive ex fiancee of hers. Overall, a rate the book a 10.

Now THIS is the kind of book I like to read -- skillfully written, entertaining, intelligent, exquisitely detailed, with superb dialogue and lashings of both humour and sadness. It's enough to make a reader smile and cry and laugh and love the story to bits.

I bought this book on a whim when I was buying some other books...it was a chance buy, a last minute inclusion in my shopping cart. But I am SO glad that I did buy it.

First written in the 80s, this special edition reprint has been rejigged by the author, who has added about 50 pages of new material. I cannot attest as to the original book's quality, but this new version is gorgeous, and reads like it could have been written this year...it really hasn't dated at all. Truly, this is one of the very few romance books worthy of that overused moniker of 'timeless classic'. Honestly, it's so fabulous, it puts most other other romance books to shame. The author knows her stuff -- her research is extensive, her planning and execution are Olympic gold medal standard, and her commitment to her work shows.

But best of all, this book will give hope to any woman who has ever wanted to change either her man or her 'destiny'...the heroine, Dougless, not only manages to change her man and his life (twice!) and her life as well, but also manages to alter history itself. Think that one person can't make a difference? Think again! And you should see the difference two people together can make...

Time travel, reincarnation, magic, eternal love -- all become possible in this book, made utterly plausible by the skill of the writer. Read this, I urge you. You won't be disappointed.

I saw the great reviews on the site for this book and got it! I hated the first half. In fact, I actually stopped reading it several times. I absolutely HATED the boyfriend she went to England with and it just made me not like Dougless from the begining. I am a very strong woman and don't have much tollerance for women who let men walk all over them!! I couldn't get over the whole, extensive scenes where they try to convince each other that they really are from another time. I get that that would be my reaction if someone came foreward in time, but I didn't want to read about it over and over and over! I forced myself to continue and I am not sorry I did.
The historical part of this book was WONDERFUL! I liked how the author went into the daily lives of 16th century commoners and aristocrats...I can tell she did research and that as all well done. I knew the ending was coming and I was prepared to be unconvinced, but it was GREAT...how she brought everything together almost made me cry!!! I couldn't give the book 5 stars since I had to make myself keep reading it twice, but i really liked it in the end and I will definitely re-read the second half of the book!!

The story: Dougless Montgomery tries to live up to the standards set by her perfect, rich family. But she always seems to fall short, and they end up laughing at her. She is thrilled when her boyfriend (a doctor) tells her he is taking her on a vacation to England. She just knows he is going to propose! Then he tells her he is bringing his bratty daughter, and not only that, but Dougless must pay half the expenses of the trip. So much for romance!
In England, after days of fighting with her boyfriend and the brat, she finds herself stranded in a churchyard surrounded by ancient tombs and statues. Physically and emotionally exhausted she falls at the feet of one of the statues. When she looks at it, she sees a 16th century knight. She starts to cry and wishes that somehow she could find her own knight in shining armor.
Suddenly she hears a ruckus behind her and standing there is Nicholas, the knight from the statue. As she loses her heart to him, she must also help him get back to his own time. Can their love endure? How can she live without him?
This book is absolutely Deveraux's best! It is Snow White and Cinderella all mixed together with a modern twist. You will laugh (Dougless tries to teach medieval ladies how to play Monopoly) and cry (Dougless must help Nicholas return to the 16th century to stop his execution). When I think of this book, I just have to sit back and sigh...it is such a wonderful, touching story. If you don't love this story, check your pulse...you might be dead. That is the only reason not to love this book!

The best part about romances is the part when hero and heroine fall in love. The looks, the longings, the forbidden kisses make it exciting and pleasurable. This book is double best in this respect because in this book the same characters fall in twice. Although the second time dougless knew Nicholas but he was not the same man at first and it took time for her to find the man she had fallen in love with.

The way of life in sixteenth century was quiet brutal and I am sure Ms Deveraux has done her research thoroughly and all that must be true. It's hard to imagine a life like that especially the part where the child was tied down to stop him from getting in trouble!!!

Nicholas was great! I am so glad dougless was finally able to change history because if she wouldn't have then my hero Nicholas would have such a disgraceful in history. Imagine how he must have felt to know that the things people remembered of him were just the sexual conquests he had and the fact that he was a traitor.

The happy ending was unexpected. In fact I was feeling very sad for dougless because she will always love a man she would never get but she did get her Nicholas in twentieth century. Thank you Ms deveaux otherwise I would have cried in the end!

I ordered this book based on high reviews. I enjoyed the beginning of the book. It was quite well written the description of the main character and her relationship with Robert, then also her meeting with Nicolass. Then it all started to be too simple and stupid. It was too much easily written when they spent time in the castle in 20th century. It was written in the style for teenagers. Then again it went better when Dougless went into old times. I enjoyed reading about old times, but Dougless was too much crying it was quite irritating crying all the time. The story itself could be maybe good for the movie, but it would have to be changed without all that stupid crying. This was my first book from this author, but I did not like her style of writting so much. When reading about old times I prefer for example the author Jennifer Donnely.

I bought "A Knight in Shining Armor" yesterday evening on a whim, not knowing the author or anything about the story - and I was immediately sucked into reading it, so much that I wouldn't leave this book for anything, not to eat, go to the bathroom, or even sleep until I finished it around 1 am this morning. Then, instead of falling right asleep, I stayed up another hour just going over this book in my mind. It was simply incredible. I've only read one other time-traveling romance before, and that was "Until Forever" by my favorite romance author Johanna Lindsey. I had thought "Until Forever" was pretty good, but now I realize it simply sucks in comparison to "A Knight in Shining Armor." In fact, if I compared the two books to desserts, "Until Forever" would be a gingerbread cookie while "A Knight" would be a steaming chocolate soufflé drizzled in hot chocolate and topped with powdered sugar and whipped cream. It was that yummy!

The medieval hero, Nicholas, was amazing! It was the little affectionate things he did that had me ga-ga over him, like how he planted Dougless (the heroine) with a joyously sweet kiss once he tasted ice cream for the first time. Dougless was also fun; she didn't behave predictably and had personality quirks and clever come-backs that I had never really seen before in a romance novel heroine. They didn't immediately become lovers, but I liked that so much, because it made me crazy anticipating when they finally would - and when they did, all I can say is WOW! I had to reread what I was reading to make sure I had really read that.

For all my glowing praise, the book is not 100 percent perfect. The first chapter describing Dougless' relationship with her boyfriend Robert and his bratty kid seemed over the top to the point where I started smirking, thinking the book was going to be totally lame. Some of the women's lib stuff also felt forced. But thank God I don't always go with first impressions! I might have put this jewel down and not enjoyed a witty, magical story full of fascinating detail about medieval life and celebrating a love that spanned 400 years.

I am most definitely going to start reading Jude Deveraux now!

Well, Jude Deveraux doesn't belong to my most favourite writers. I think her stories are too unbelievable even for romance (every romance is more or less unbelievable). I read only 8 books of her: „Velvet series“ – it was OK; „Princess“ was nice, sometimes funny, I liked it more than „The Raider“ and I found „Temptress“ one of the worst novels ever written. But „Knight in shining armor“ ... I confess when I decided to buy it I was influenced by two things: ...list of best millennium (or 20th century?) romances and the plot. I've always been in love in those stories about nowadays people meeting men living in old times. I absolutely adore French movies „Les visiteurs“ and found Michael Crichton's „Timeline“ very interesting. So I couldn't miss „A knight in shining armor“! And I will never be sorry that I bought it. Yes, the book - I mean the plot - is unbelievable, but – it's a kind of sci-fi and in sci-fi stories everything is possible. I was really sad about the ending, I hoped Nicholas and Dougless somehow would be together. It surely was not that happy end used in romances! Still, it is very very nice, almost heartbreaking and I'm sure this time Jude Deveraux did her best. Congratulation!

The book was one I had read before when I was much younger. I had fond memories of it, but found that you cannot go back in time. I enjoyed walking down memory lane, but then stumbled when I could not explain some of the character motivation. I can suspend disbelief for the time travel and some of here today gone tomorrow mind set, but just could not feel the love when she made him promise to not marry and then she met a guy 400 years later and "fell in love" on first sight. A quick read and a fun romp, but hard to compare to my memories of the book.

Jude Deveraux is one of my favorite writers actually she's been probably the only reason I read romance books because I usually find them too tasteful for my own. I've had read many books by her before this one that I thought were actually good and well written but this book has outdone them all. After reading some of her not very appealing novels, I've started to lose hope in finding a book that could lift up to the usual high standards of her other good novels, but this book came to prove me wrong ! There is still some books written by Jude Deveraux that are both wonderful and gripping I just hasn't discovered them yet ! And this book came in a time where I craved a Jude Deveraux novel that is both funny and romantic !

At first I wasn't really sure about reading this book. I heard it was one of her best works but when I heard that it took place in contemporary England (20th C) England at that, I wasn't very thrilled because I thought it wasn't a Historical Romance which is what Jude Deveraux writes best Sorry to all fans but I have read some of her Contemporary romances and though not bad I think her Medieval once are better. That me hesitate a bit in reading this book but then I heard it had some Time Travel in it and I wasn't really sure how was that going to work out because the subject of time traveling although thrilling to me is very outdated and overused in movies and novels that I thought will make this book look somehow not very original (maybe not at the time it was published). However I gave it a chance mostly out of curiosity and because of all the hype.I was expecting a good novel but may oh may ! I got an Excellent Novel with very likable characters and a brilliant dialogue, at first this book didn't struck me much but well let's just say I came to fall in love with it that I stayed up to 2 AM to finish this book ! It was with no doubt a page turner and after throwing every book I've read recently across the room this book was finally been able to hold my attention well enough that I was been able to finish it in no time at all !

Douglass Montgomery hasn't had a lot of luck in her relationships. Everytime she meets a man she believes him to be the 'One' and thinks she's in love until the truth comes out and the relationship ends dramatically. Unlike her so Ambitious sisters all what Douglass wanted in life was a man who would sweep her off her feet and treat her with respect and kindness and Oh is not a criminal or married. With Having a surgeon (Robert) as her Boyfriend life feels finally tolerable, Douglass is going to marry him, makes her family proud and lives happily ever after. However her Pink Dreams soon ends even sooner that she'd hoped when Robert and his evil brat of a daughter Gloria stood her up on an ancient church while vacationing in England. Having no food, water or money to get back Douglass goes to a tomb inside the church and so hurt by what had just happened to her, spend the time weeping on the tomb of a 16th Century English Earl and asked for a Knight in Shining Armor to her astonishment and disbelieve a man wearing an Armor and a 16th Century custom appeared in front of her and told her that he was Nicolas Stafford Earl of Thornywick and that her weeping has summoned him from the year 1564 to the future and just like she brought him in she must help him return back. Douglass who is having a hard time believing the man's story thinks he is mad or insane but agrees to help him anyway from sympathy hoping that he'd come to his sanity soon. But as time proceed Douglass discovers that this man is actually from the past and just before she knew it they are trying to solve the mystery surrounding his past as well as clearing his name. What makes it harder is that Douglass is starting to fall in love with him and can't bare to think of him leaving her side.

This book has made me both laugh out loud at some moments and cry at others, it also made me sigh many times. I may be cliche and over sentimental but I really loved this book ! The characters were likable especially Douglass and Nicolas, thank God that jerk Robert and his daughter didn't have much say in the book I just couldn't bear them. I thought a Knight in Shining Armor was very sweet and Romantic, this has to be my all time favorite Jude Deveraux book ! She has really outdone herself in this one ;)

Having read and loved Temptation, I didn't hesitate in giving A Knight in Shining Armor a whirl. Jude Deveraux has once again delivered a wonderful novel. This has got to be one of the best love stories and time-travel romances I have ever read! I hadn't cried so much while reading a novel since Vapor. I hate it when romance novels bring me to tears, but I couldn't help myself with this one. This novel tells the story of Dougless Montgomery, a modern day woman (from the late eighties, but still) who never gets it right when it comes to men. She thinks she has finally met the right man in Robert -- until he and his pain-in-the-behind daughter abandon her at a historical church during what is supposed to be a romantic and educational holiday in England. Heartbroken and in tears, she wishes for a knight in shining armor... And her wish comes true in the form of Nicholas Stafford, Earl of Thornwyck, a sixteenth century nobleman who is transported to the twentieth century when he hears Dougless's wretched sobs. Nicholas is fascinated with all of the modern conveniences of the twentieth century and Dougless has no idea what to make of the strange and handsome man in ancient armor, but things get serious when he learns about his tarnished reputation in the history books and tour guides. Also, he arrives to the twentieth century three days before he is to be executed for committing treason, a false accusation that threatens the continuation of the Stafford dynasty. He sees his trip to modern age as an opportunity to change the course of history. And Dougless is there for him all the way, and during the course of events a love that transcends time and boundaries is born. There are many twists throughout the novel.

I loved this novel so much. I literally couldn't put it down. It was a roller coaster ride of emotions and twists and turns and I couldn't wait to know what would happen next. The things in this modern age seen through the eyes of a renaissance man is very interesting and so much fun. I loved how excited Nicholas became whenever he discovered some gadget or some food he had never seen and eaten before (especially the ice cream and tea). I laughed on several occasions. Nicholas is adorable in the first few pages in the novel, then he becomes exasperating when his womanizing ways come to light. But he never stops being one of the best romantic heroes I have read. I fell in love with this hero. His feelings for Dougless made me smile and his selfless ways, while misguided at times, made him all the more wonderful. And what can I say about Dougless? She is a wonderful, three-dimensional heroine who goes through a period of emotional growth and self-discovery as the story progresses. She grows from being a person who is desperate for love and a pushover to being a woman who doesn't settle for less than what she deserves. The historical aspects of the Elizabethan age (1560s) were very interesting and well-written. It was nice to see that the author hadn't romanticized the time period. She brought up some of the less savory aspects of the period, like the lack of grooming and modern conveniences and the way that women and children were treated at the time. The one big slipup I noticed was that Dougless addressed Nicholas as Lord Stafford instead of Lord Thornwyck, which is the correct form of address to an earl. This slip surprised me seeing as Deveraux did such a good job researching the time period. Anyway, the secondary characters were great and the subplot that centered on Dougless and Robert was very insightful after reading Ms. Deveraux's afterword. The ending was a major tear-jerker for me. It has quite a unique twist, not predictable at all! I just felt bad for Nicholas because while Dougless spent a few days without him after they met, he spent a whole lifetime without her. And that just made me cry buckets of tears. I fell in love with this novel and five stars aren't enough for this gem. This will go to my reread pile. Jude Deveraux, like Judith McNaught, has become a must-read author and I cannot wait to read her other books I have purchased. I also cannot wait to pick up Sweet Liar, where the protagonists of this novel make an appearance and because I look forward to meeting the Taggert family. In the meantime, I cannot recommend A Knight in Shining Armor enough!

This is one of my favorite romances of all time. I read this time-travel romance back when I was in high school and it made me swoon. Every woman wants a knight in shining armor to rescue her but what makes this story a classic, as far as I'm concerned, is that the heroine also rescues the knight. A story about true love and soul mates that makes you believe in the power of real love.

A must read for all romance lovers!

This book was recommended by a friend and is still a favorite of mine...if not her best book, it sure comes close. This is a time travel book with a twist. Douglass, the heroine, is more than a bit short of self-esteem. She comes to England on vacation with a man who basically uses her to help pay the way of him and his daughter and they constantly verbally abuse her on the trip. When she finally speaks up for herself, they take her purse and abandon her in a church cemetary where Nicholas, the hero, is transported from medevil times. They start to fall in love but he ends up back in his own time. A twist of fate then sends her back to Nicholas' time, but he does not remember her and doesn't really like her. This book takes a look into the realities of that time that some romance writers downplay or ignore. Some instances were the extremely poor hygeine, early mortality rates, and the truth about how kids were raised and why so many died young. Nicholas' own illegitimate son is wrapped in swaddling and left for hours at a time hanging from a hook often in his own waste. Also, the class differences were so much more dramatic then. Douglass tries to educate the people about how a little cleanliness can go a long way to prevent tragedy from unneccessary deaths. At first suspicious of her,Nicholas ends up falling in love with her all over again. Unfortunately, she must go back to her own time and he cannot come with her. It is heartbreaking to see these people find out how to really love only to lose their love to fate. The end is a surprise you must find out for yourself. I wonder why some people think romance readers and writers are less than intelligent, when some of the best documented research on the past is in these books. Of course, Ms. Deveraux is a master. Please don't let this book go by without reading it.

A Knight in Shining Armor is one of Jude Deveraux's best books. She weaves the tale of a hopelessly romantic American who wants to find love. So she sends her a knight.
A knight in armor. So what if he is from another century. They love each other almost from their first meeting. Douglas teaches Nicholas how to be a modern man, and he teaches her how to love. After a night of passionate love, he gets sent back to his own time. Desperate and disconsolate, Douglas finds herself in his time. Doing the same things all over again, learning to like each other first and then to love. They are soul mates in the true sense of the word. This book will have you on the edge of your seat, and not just from the fiery love scenes either, but from the beautiful, poignat way it is written. If you do not shed a few tears at the end of this book, you have not truly experienced it in all its beauty.

There is a long river somewhere in the never-ending cosmos. Two lovers, bonded as one, swims steadily in that river, but they are further from each other yet they still know, without question, where they are. That river is called Time, flows as it goes, and the positions of the two lovers are the positions of when and where they are at that moment in time. They know, without a doubt, that they always find each other. Beyond that continuous river, time has no meaning. Neither does space.

Love endures.

A Knight in Shining Armor is certainly a wonderful and heart-felt book to be read, and I read it in one sitting. As I bury myself into this book, I cried, I laughed, I feared, I grieved, I smiled, and I pondered. While I admitted that it was a new edition of the book that I have read, I did not grant myself a chance to read the first edition before the changes been made to the book by the author. Nevertheless, this book contains a wonderful story with a beautifully written plot. I have enjoyed the author's delivery of the concepts of time travel, soul mates, and reincarnation into this book.

I am not a romance reader, and this is the first book of Jude Deveraux's that I have absorbed. I came across this book while searching for the time travel novels as I am fanatic of the time travel stories. And, this book is now adds to the list of my cherished books.

As far as I know Ms Deveraux was one of the first authors of the time travel story and as of today not many writers have reached such lofty heights of success as Ms Deveraux in creating such believable story lines. Because of the influx of sub standard writing in this area most romance readers have shied away from the time travel genre. In some instances I can't blame them. Unbelievable at best; just plain stupid at worst. I wish I could talk them all into reading AKISA. Time travel becomes a sub plot and true love becomes the essence of the story as it should be. In most time travels someone comes into this time or goes back to another. Very rarely do they share two time jumps together and if I say much more I'll ruin this wonderful fairy tale. The underlying lessons on true to life personality disorders is new and refreshing. The ending is so different is takes your breath away. A great read for a lazy day at the beach or relaxing in the hammock after a long days work. Read and enjoy !

I bought this book 2 evenings ago in an English bookstore in Paris (whilst looking for Johanna Lindsey books)and finished it last night, in between having to go to work and a few hours sleep. This is my first Jude Devereux book and I really enjoyed it. I have been on the look out for time travel/regression romance novels ever since reading Barbara Erskine's Lady of Hay as a teenagaer. I enjoyed Knight in Shining Armour but it's not the best I have read in this genre. Both lead characters are likeable. Nicholas is absolutely gorgeous but Dougless is weak (or stupid?) Do real women actually let men walk all over them like Dougless allows her past lovers to? The author's references to Elizabethan details are interesting to discover and Nicholas' discovery of the modern world is amusing. The friendship and relationship which evolves between the 2 lead characters keeps you involved in the book and you can truly believe that there is a great love between them. My only complaint is that there could have been a stronger love, a love throughout an eternity but this is not achieved because Dougless remains the same person in physical body, mind and sole whilst Nicholas changes.

A Knight In Shining Armor is a well-written historical romance. The characters are fun, the romance is captivating. But this book towers over the competition because it is so much more than that. Jude Deveraux has written a self-help book in disguise for women that don't value themselves highly enough. Dougless, the heroine, blames herself for the problems in her relationship. She worries about her looks, she hopes for marriage, and she bends over backward to treat her no-good string of boyfriends like Kings. She feels like a failure next to her successful family members. It takes one man, a knight, coming to her from the past to slowly teach her that she deserves, should expect, to be treasured by a man. The romance, the humor, the rich writing is all wonderful. But the feel-good sense of self-worth that a reader steps away with? Priceless.

Any of the books written by this woman will keep you enthralled. I've worn mine out and have had to buy new editions.
This story is humorous at turns, dramatic, unbelievably well researched, and above all the purest testimony to what love truly is.
It's unique for a time travel romance with Nicholas the errant and wickedly sensual knight tugged into late 1980's England by abandoned tourist Dougless, a naive woman.
Investigating how to get him back is full of chuckles and sensuality. When he does go back Dougless gets pulled along and it was hilarious.
Needless to say they cannot live in the same time. I'm not normally a crier but this book makes me bawl like a two year old without her nap. And I read it probably twice a year, every year since it came out.
This book is sophisticated, smart, funny, sensual, and perhaps the most romantic I've ever read. Why perhaps? Because Deveraux's "Mountain Laurel" is my favorite book of all time, any genre.

I have read this book years ago when I was going through a romance book period ~~ and this book has never left my bookshelf. I have found that every time I give this book away, I end up buying a new copy because I want to read it again. And I have noticed that this book has 155 reviews ~~ this book can't go wrong!
Douglass Montgomery is abandoned by her boyfriend and his spoiled brat of a daughter ~~ and is rescued by a knight from the middle ages, Nicholas Stafford, Earl of Thornwyck. And their story spans over hundreds of years ~~ when Nicholas returns to his own time, Douglass followed in turn. And together they right the wrong that has been done to Nicholas' family.
It's such a wonderfully romantic story ~~ a fable to be sure ~~ but so wonderfully written and not so sappy like a lot of romance novels are! You find yourself reading the first paragraph and you can't put the book down till you find out what happens. Deveraux has a talent matched by very few in her field. It's a book to be cherished over time.

Nothing has ever topped this love classic! Many have tried before and more will still try, but nothing will ever turn out like this one. I'm a hooked Jude Deveraux fan, and I practically slip out of the house <I'm only 14, after all> just so I could visit the library and my favourite bookstore to find more books of hers. I have spent a fortune on all the books but not a cent was wasted. 'A knight in shining armour' is a must read and a keeper as is 'Legend' and 'Remembrance'. Nothing can ever make me sell or throw my Jude Deveraux books away. 'A knight in shining armour' will make to cry, laugh and literally change your life. Read more about the fantastic Montgomery family in the other books by the authoress, but remember, REMEMBER, NEVER, to throw the biggest classic in romance stories!!!!!!
Keep reading her books!

This is the first book that I have read by Jude Deveraux and I ordered it based on the rave reviews from the customers. Mine is obviously the minority opinion here since this book is rated 5 stars by customers with over 350 reviews, but I was disappointed and almost did not finish reading the story (an unheard of event for me since I frequently whip through a novel a day!) My problem was less with the book's plot(which was rather good) and more with the writing style. The writing and sentence structure, particularly at the beginning of the book, was distractingly uninspired and it really detracted from my enjoyment of the story. Towards the end of the book, things got a bit better (perhaps because the story became more engaging.)

The story itself is a romantic fantasy with entertaining elements of time travel and a theme of enduring love. Unfortunately, the heroine, Dougless, is a spineless doormat at the beginning of the tale (another problem with the book, in my opinion) and the hero is a bit too conceited and high-handed in his treatment of her (I mean, after all, he was supposed to be her *soulmate* "Knight in Shining Armor" pulled by love through over 400 years to be with her--he could have been a *little* bit nicer to her...) I suppose that compared to everyone else in the book, Nicholas (the hero) was *relatively* nice to Dougless, but only because the rest of the characters treated her so appallingly bad. On the plus side, she does gain some self-respect by the end of the tale and Nicholas eventually does become the kind of lover that one would be willing to travel 400 years to meet.

This book is wildly popular, so clearly my complaints are not universal; however, for a truly fabulous and well-written romantic time travel story, I would go straight to "Outlander" by Diana Gabaldon.

I never, never read romance novels. My grandmother has read enough for both of us. So, when my shipment from the store.com included a floridly covered book (you know, the Other kind of romance novel cover, sans naked people on the cover) my heart sank. I thought I had ordered a fantasy book about time travel and the Middle Ages(I usually read only science fiction/fantasy).

But, with nothing else to do that afternoon, I opened the book and started reading. And didn't stop reading until 3:42am the next morning. And, I am ashamed to admit, I was weeping when at last I closed the book.

What a great love story! What a superior, inventive plot! What a well-researched, humerous, and intelligent book!

I have learned my lesson and I will be expanding my reading list starting today!

Granted that the research for life in 16th century England is meticulous and that the personalites of Dougless and Nicholas are quite charming. The rest of the story keeps grinding away at the same material.
In the second part of the book, Dougless rehashes the same information about the 20th century as when she first meets Nicholas in her own time.
There is also a small decrepency in the beginning of the book. On page 87, Nicholas tells Dougless that he was writing a letter to his mother, just as he was leaving to come forward in time. On page 99 Dougless wonders if he can read and write.
I did not find it a particularly satislfying book and just crept through it page by page hoping that along the way it would improve and that the tempo of the story would quicken. For sure it was not a book that I could not put down. I had to consciously think about going back to read it.
Perhaps it is because I am not a real fan of time travel books that I did not find it to be a "thrillingly romantic tale."

Knight in Shining Armor is without any doubt the best romance I have ever read, time travel not whithstanding. I could totally relate to this modern day heroine's difficulty in dealing with dating a man with a spoiled child (my husband had three). She smolders while he puts said child's wishes first (hmmmmm, so true and familiar lol). Then the book really takes off as she is basically abandoned by her boyfriend and is weeping in an ancient church. Here comes the knight, Nicholas. From that page on the book is often side-clutchingly laugh-out-loud as Dougless the heroine tries to help her bewildered time traveler make his way through the modern world to try to return to his own and redress some family wrongs that were part of history. The ending is very surprising, and I was more than satisfied with it. So laugh, cry, (well, Dougless does that rather a lot and it IS said to rid the body of toxins) and just don't plan anything for a while if you are a slow reader. :)

Alone in a foreign country with no identification or money, Dougless is weeping at an ancient tomb when suddenly a knight appears. Dougless helps the bewildered man search history books for the traitor who had him executed in 1564. When the knight suddenly falls back into his own time and Dougless realizes his execution was carried out, she wills herself into the 16th century to solve the mystery of his betrayal.
While I was initially annoyed with having to start the romance all over in the middle of the book (when Dougless goes back in time, our hero doesn't know her), I stuck with it, and eventually I was glad I did. The ending was so charming, so lovely, that I forgave Deveraux for bringing the book to a screeching halt in the middle. I highly recommend this book.

A few years ago my friend started describing "the best romance novel she'd ever read" to me. About the time she got to the girl bathing in a fountain, I tuned out. However, a few weeks after that I was at a used bookstore and lo and behold, it was sitting there right at eye-level, beckoning me. I reluctantly bought it and stayed up the entire night finishing it. I love this book and now own the original paperback as well as the revised hardback. I re-read it at least once a year and it never turns sappy on me, like most in the romance genre do. The characters are lovable and have a certain depth about them. The fact that the ending isn't predictable is a big selling point and anyone thinking of delving into a little romance this summer (or winter, depending on where you are) this is a wonderful starting point. It got me hooked and I display it proudly on my bookshelf. Be warned that there are some rather intense sex scenes so if that makes you uncomfortable, you might want to avoid this for something a bit milder. This isn't a trashy book and there is an actual STORY. I love this book and you will too.

I am now a happily married 66 years old and this (well worn) paperback has been sitting on my bookshelf since it first came out. Every few years I give it another read. It sits right next to Lynn Kurland's "Stardust of Yesterday". Books come and books go, but these two will stay forever.

SPOILER -- I couldn't put this book down and loved it. The only criticism I have is the ending... I was left feeling sad that Nicholas had to spend the rest of his life alone without Douglass. That really bothered me.

I enjoyed the first 3/4 of this book the most. About halfway into after douglass went back in time, it seemed to lose something for me. It became too much about saving nicholas and his family rather than the romance and the relationship. I felt they had more chemistry when they fell in love the first time... and it bothered me that nicholas never completely remembered everything that happended between them in the first part of the book. I feel if he had, the romance in the later part of the book would have been much more meaningful.

And, I was hoping in the end they would somehow be reunited and nicholas would indeed know everything... from both parts of the book. Oh well.

But, still, I loved this book and look forward to reading more of Jude's books.

This book was absolutely amazing. After reading so many 5-star reviews, I wasn't sure it would live up to my expectations. And of course it didn't...it EXCEEDED them! I was engrossed after the first few paragraphs (and it always takes me forever to "get into" a book completely). I fell in love with both Nicholas and Dougless for their absolute, complete, precious love for each other. I felt like my heart was going to break both times she loses him.
Even though I give this book 5 stars, there is ONE thing that bothers me. I was hoping so much that she wouldn't end up with some guy that looks and acts like Nicholas, but ISN'T actually Nicholas. And of course she did. That happened with Remembrance too, and it's just such a downer. After everything Dougless and Nicholas had been through together, they don't even end up together, but their "souls" find each other! Argh! It's like someone telling you you can't have your husband anymore, but you can have another man with your husband's "soul." Not good enough.
But yeah, other than that I loved it.

Jude Devereux created a genre that broke new ground ages before time travel and paranormal books became all the rage. This book is still at the top of my list of favorites.

Aside from every woman being able to understand being jilted by a man who cannot commit, and a woman who settles for a man who is so far below what she deserves in her life, this story then throws in a stunning knight in shining armor to sweeten the story. Jude Devereux tosses in laughter, touching pathos, outlandish situations that could only happen when you mix two individuals from such opposing time frames. From page to page, you do not know what to expect.

It all makes for a book you simply cannot put down. The twists and turns keep yanking you in every conceivable direction, and all the while it yanks at every emotion you can feel. Most of all, in the true fashion of this author her beginnings and endings always leave you stunned and keep you thinking about this book long after you've closed the last page. I'm never without a copy of this book in my permanent library. Extraordinary!

This book is why I read romance novels to this day. Its why Romance is best selling in my shop. Because the book was so great and the books following it were so great that I became a Romance addict.
It has time travel, its sex and bodice ripping. It has characters that are passionate and intelligent.
My Best friend turned me on to this book when we were 19, 20... we are now 33,34... and still I never tire of it. I was so excited about the rerelease... another reason to read it again.
The Montgomeries. Agh. The Velvet Saga... these are four books also by Jude that contain the further adventures of the Montgomeries. You will have a very hard time choosing which man and woman you like best.
My BFF and I shut ourselves in her apartment one weekend and read them all... all the Montgomeries one after the other. We have a lot of other things to do... but it was something we wanted to do.
We feasted on Mac and Chz, Pigs in a Blanket and Green Bean Casarolle. Highly recommeded that you get your BFF and do the same. I will never forget the experience.
Where will you read A Knight In Shining Armor... make it an unforgettable place because it is a unforgettable book.

"A Knight in Shining Armor" is a magnificent masterpiece! This is one of Jude Deveraux's best works. This story-line and plot is one of the best stories I've ever read. It is a very emotional read. I cried the first time I read it. And I still cry now every time I re-read it. If you love romantic time-travel stories with great story-lines and characters, and the type of romance that causes you deep heart pains while you read it, this book is for you. "A Knight in Shining Armor" will always have a place of honor on my keeper shelf. I highly recommend this beautiful book. It's a keeper. Enjoy!

I've read this book over and over for the last few years. I have lost many and bought replacements each time. Each read is like a first time. The story of Douglass and Nicholas draws me in very single time. This book is very well written with humor, compassion and utter romance. Each character serves a purpose whether a spoiled daughter or condescending relative. With imagination, you can be a fly on the wall throughout each era of the story. I'll continue to read this book over and over. It is a perfect romance.

I picked up this book at the library. I was living on an Airforce base in Incirlik Turkey my kids were in school, the housework was done, and I needed something to occupy my time! From the first page, I could not put this book down, I laughed and cried and laughed again. This is romantic fiction at its absolute best! I'm about to download it onto my Kindle, and spend a delicious New Years day afternoon re discovering this beautiful story. I'm a mental health therapist, and this book is probably the best stress relief you'll ever find, an awesome way to start the year :0 First though I think I'll bake some cookies........... :)

this is one of the best books I've read in a long time. I actually listened to the audio book. It was the best I have listened to so far. I enjoyed the book and the humor so much. I got a few really good laughs.

Dougless Montgomery is a grade school teacher that comes from an old established family. Her family has money. She is living with a doctor, Robert, who doesn't want a commitment. Dougless and Robert go on a trip to England a year from the day the move in together. Robert brings his daughter Gloria from a previous marriage with him. Gloria does not like Douglass and causes her problems.

When they all arrive in England there is a misunderstanding and Douglass is left behind in a church with out any money, id, nor clothes. The adventure starts here. You really need to read it to appreciate all the great humor.

This was the first "romance time travel" book I've read, and I nearly set it down as unreadable. Good thing I stuck with it and plodded through the ridiculous beginning because it did prove a worthy and enjoyable read.

The book opens with Dougless, a spineless, pathetic excuse for an educated woman, who accepts the vile treatment of her "boyfriend" and his fat, cruel, manipulative daughter while on a trip in England. (This was where I nearly chose another book.)

Thanks to a bizarre experience, Dougless meets a fascinating stranger who claims to be from Elizabethan England. Pitying the poor hallucinating man, Dougless agrees to help him until his sanity returns. Gradually it dawns on her that the man (Nicholas) is indeed an English earl from the 1500s whose historical reputation is in shambles due to his sexual philandering. At his request, she agrees to help him repair his reputation and return to his own time. As you might predict, they fall in love and other problems arise.

The author brilliantly captures the enthusiasm that Nicholas feels for modern life with hilarious scenes; I laughed out loud frequently and thought this has potential to make an entertaining movie.

Since this was the first romance time-travel book I've read, I was unprepared for the explicit sex scenes. Oh, they were good, just a surprise!

The plot twists and turns enough to prevent the reader from predicting the events completely. Excellent character descriptions make them come alive, and the author must have done considerable research of Elizabethan life.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book once I passed the unbelievable beginning, and wish the author would make a sequel.

Are you in to historical romances? What about modern romances? Well you are in store because you get both in this very touching, very lovable novel. Set in 1988, a young, wealthy woman is left stranded by a spiteful lover. But when she sheds a tear, transported to her is a handsome hero. She believes him to be an amnesiac, he knows he is there, not to help her, but to help himself restore honor to his family name. Together they embark on a journey to right the wrongs of history mistold. To find the answer to a question that means life or death, they tour castles of Englands which he is sure holds the answers to his questions.
As soon as he had come to her he disappeared to leave the heroine in despair, until she discovers that what they thought would be the answers to his life, were not. Mysteriously, she finds herself in the 16th century to once again help to preserve the name and honor of his family. She is met with skepicism and doubt, but also with humor and fascination. Together, with perseverance and determination, the ultimate goal is achieved. With a beautiful leading lady and a gorgeous male, this story brings tears of joy and sorrow and of hope. One of the best romance novels I've read. It makes you believe in love time and again.

I originally thought that the book was historical romance, and was quite put off when it started out in modern times. I mentally berated myself for not further researching the book before I went out and bought it. I kept reading because I began to really hate Gloria and Robert, and if nothing else, wanted to see our heroine blow both of them off.

I have to say, that Dougless is not your typical strong-minded heroine. Most of the time she's crying, falling in love with every man who looks at her, and basically is a pleaser and willing to do whatever in order to get a marriage proposal and show her sisters that she's not simply a screw up. I can't identify with this mentality, because I have more self-respect than that. And, because when a man treats you horribly, you don't simply think that marriage is a great idea because that means you're not messing up your life. Obviously, marrying the guy would mess up her life! But regardless, not every heroine can epitomize my own decisions. And, once I got over that fact I began to like Dougless. She was very honest and up front that she was a screw up, that she fell in love with every guy that "needed" her, and that she just couldn't help crying. Heck, if she didn't cry the story wouldn't have moved along nearly as fast, considering it's what brings Nicholas to her!

I loved reading about Nicholas looking at the future with such raw fascination. It was even humorous at times. I was a little put off when a relationship began to develop because I had a feeling that Nicholas A. Simply felt she was the one since they had an emotional bond of magic, and B. still let other women kiss and hang all over him. It was never mentioned that this was done to make her jealous. So, him being a philanderer, I simply thought it rather distasteful of the hero. Nevertheless, I came to really believe in there love. It seemed very genuine, and who can deny fate in a romance novel?

I was a little disappointed when the heroine was transported back to 1560 to find that Nicholas had no recollection of their time in the future. Not only that, but when he's recovering memories, she leaves before he even completely remembers all of their time from the future. I thought it would have been better if there was a point where they could have picked up where they left off, rather than simply having to fall in love all over again, and never have the complete revelation, only flashbacks (or flashforwards?). But again, I loved how much Nicholas loves her completely, and is willing to never bed her in order to keep him with him. I found myself torn in what I thought the heroine should do: live with Nicholas and his wife, or never see him again. When she went back to the future, that's when I realized that I would maybe have stayed with him. At least you know you have his love, right? There's something to be said for touch, smell, and the sight of the man you love in comparison to a couple weeks of memories.

By the end of the book I was hanging on every page and pulled an all-nighter I was so enthralled in how it would turn out. These two simply had to end up together since 400 years couldn't keep them apart. So, imagine my disappointment when she ends up with a random guy that simply has the same mannerisms as Nicholas. The ultimate letdown, in my opinion. I can see how some people see this as a great ending since their "souls" end up together. But I don't know this Reed Stanford. So, to me it was like a completely separate person who ends up with her. I would completely recant this statement if Reed had all of the memories she did of their time in both the past and future. But no, she has to start all over again for a THIRD time. I thought, that it would have been a better ending if she went to the Staffords that were alive in the 20th century, now that they had rewritten history, and had a Nicholas Stafford that was actually her Nicholas complete with memories! Ah, how satisfied I would be! I also had a hard time swallowing Nicholas's life in the 1500's as a happy ending. Why does Dougless end up with Nicholas's soul in her life, but in Nicholas's time there was no one and he died alone?? If there's time travel, there can certainly have been a soul reincarnate of Dougless. C'mon, here!

Regardless of this, I still thought this was a strong and gripping romance. I loved it, and plan to reread it. There are just some things that I would change, as I've written out here. But, it's been a while since I've stayed up all night because I literally couldn't put it down. So, if that's not worth 5 stars, I don't know what is. It just fell flat on coming full circle with me. And because they did in some sense end up together, I'm not going to have the book lose a whole star for exactly one page of the book, no matter how important it was, and how much I still think about it! Please read it! You won't be disappointed, not at least, until the ending.

Sorry for the narrative. But I can't stop thinking about this book and wishing there were still more to read!

Dougless Montgomery is a "Hopeless" Romantic, searching for her true love in all the proverbial wrong places. When abandoned by her live-in boyfriend and his bratty daughter in the middle of nowhere, she is overcome with a soul-wrenching grief, a hopelessness so powerful she inadvertantly calls forth a real live Knight in Shining Armor in the person of Nicholas Stafford. Dougless and Nicholas will delight and amuse you in their attempt to adjust to two time periods as they work together to find the answer to a mystery before time runs out. It's so funny how the taste of food is even new to Nicholas Stafford his like a child just learning new things. But it keeps you going when she's transported in time and has to start all over again with him. The ending surprised me but I don't know how else it could have ended. I think it would make a great movie.

The lovely Dougless Montgomery, on vacation with her annoyingly inconsiderate boyfriend and his brat of a daughter, ends up stranded at a church in the middle of nowhere, England.
She falls upon a tomb in the church, wracked with tears. Praying for her Knight in Shining Armor. And thus, her wish is granted in the form of Nicholas Stafford, an English Earl who died in 1564. And that is only the beginning of this wonderfully romantic tale. It is funny, heartwarming, passionate, and all around fabulous. I highly recommend this book.

The first time I read this book I would have given it 5 stars because I loved it so much. The story stayed with me for years and I always planned on a re-read but it's only taken about 15 years to get around to it. Although I didn't remember everything about the story I found it was very nice which was great, a few surprises that I didn't remember. There were a few things that bugged me or puzzled me...referring to machines...was the word 'machine' known in the 13th century...will have to look that up. The name Dougless too was a bit strange considering her older sisters' names were Elizabeth, Catherine and Anne. I know Dougless' father was a Medieval History Teacher & that's why he probably called her that but I just didn't like the name. Small negatives that are a bit silly but overall I liked it. Probably won't read it again but may suggest it to friends.

As usual, I am impressed by Ms. Deveraux. This book was wonderfully romantic and enthralling and I would be lying if I said I didn't love it... however, is it just me, or is the plot strangely reminiscent of Johanna Lindsey's Until Forever? For those that have not read it, Ms. Lindsey's novel also had two lovers that jumped back and forth through time and changed history and ended with the heroine finding a 'reincarnation' of her love in modern times. The particulars were of course different, but... oh well.. Knight was an anjoyable read anyway.

I don't want to be in the minority, but I don't see the appeal of this book. I had heard this book was really good, but the first 200 pages made me angry at Nicholas and Dougless. I just could not connect with Dougless because of her "relationship" with Robert. The guy was a major jerk, but she kept making excuses for him. It wasn't until I read the author's note at the end that I began to understand, but still. And I could just not jump on the wagon for Nicholas and Dougless. The time travel was okay, I've read better. The Time Traveler's Wife was good, but if you want exceptional time travel writing, definitely read Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. I might have liked this book more had I not been in the middle of the Outlander series. I think the only thing that saved this book was the end. I didn't tear up like other reviewers did, but it was very sweet and not something I was expecting. If it wasn't for the end and the author's note, I would have given this a 1 star. And I could have done with less of Dougless's crying. All she did was cry and all Nicholas did was glare at her and refuse to admit he had any feelings for her. I'll stick with Jamie and Claire.

A pleasant surprise and an interesting read. Douglas finds herself stranded in England after she parts ways with her far from perfect boyfriend and his whiney daughter. Little does she know but her tears will summon an Elizabethan Earl from the year 1564. Our plucky protagonist is about to show the Earl what a modern girl is all about, and he is about to find the kind of love and devotion that only happens once in a lifetime.
Deveraux writes an entertaining yet predictable story that will keep you interested till the end for the sheer enjoyment of the characters she has created and the clash of two centuries. Another book by this author that I really enjoyed is THE SUMMERHOUSE. Kelsana 5/021/02

Nevertheless, I read it because the reviews listed here were outstanding. I have to agree with the 100+ readers that gave this book 5 stars. Ms. Deveraux has outdone herself. I didn't know how this was going to end but knew it wouldn't be exactly as I wanted it to, it would be too far fetched. The ending was much much more than I had expected.

This is the first time I have ever read a time travel book and was at first skeptical as I have trouble reading books that can't possibly be real. I closed the book with a knot in my throat.

From the first word to the last Deveraux keeps you in tears or stitches of laughter but always keeps you guessing as to what's going to happen next to her two main characters. This is one book that I literally could not put down. I called in sick and skipped work just to finish reading the book (that, and I'd stayed up the whole night reading and lost 8 hrs of sleep). Believe me, this book is worth every tear you'll shed, every laugh you make and any sleep you loose.

I liked this book, but every time Nicholas is referred to as a medieval knight and Deveraux suggests he comes from the Middle Ages, it makes my head explode a little. Ever heard of the Renaissance? The Elizabethans lived during the Renaissance. Also, putting the question of time travel aside, the human interactions in this book often feel unrealistic, forced and improbable, especially between Robert and Douglass. I get that he is abusive and that she is a doormat, but it was a little much.

I couldn't put it down!!! The story was so enchanting, and not only that but it was one of the BEST, and I mean THE BEST STORIES I've ever read. Believe me!!! I stayed up late at night just reading A KNIGHT IN SHINING ARMOR and even on the end...I kept on turning back to page one. It has been embedded in my memory and in my heart. I've read a lot of her books, but this sure tops the list. It was wonderful just the way it was. I've already decided to name my future-son "Colin." And nothing on God's green earth can sway me from that!!! :)

So glad I did! The book starts out slow, so you have to stay with it. The author develops these characters well and if you can get past how COMPLETELY ANNOYING the heroine is the first third of the book, you realize no matter how irritated you are, she actually grows on you. Now as for the hero...YUM. He withstands from start to finish, endearing to say the least. I give it five stars because it truly pulls you in as a reader. I'm not usually fond of time travel books, but this author does a nice job with the genre.

I enjoyed this book but I hated the ending. It petered out and could have been better done. Douglas went back to get Nicholas soul. Not believeable. I love the beginning and middle of the book. I loved Nicholas and Douglas and how they fall in love. I love that you learn how many kids J.T. Montgomery & Aria from thee Princess and that they are very happy. But the ending of this book was VERY sappy. I would of like a ton better if Douglas went back in time so her soul mate could be born. Douglas saved Nicholas' son from dying as a baby. Having it be that Nicholas soul in is Nicholas heir was just stupid. And That because Douglas was kind to her ex boyfriend and his daughter in the pasted life made them kinder to her in the present was lame. What did she do in the past before that made them so rude to her now. It just wasn't believeable.

I like a lot of depth of plot to counterbalance love stories, and I rarely find romance novels that have enough external action to please me. While this book doesn't offer as much in the way of plot as I usually like, I found it to be a sweet, light-hearted and compelling read. There were no earth-shattering moments of emotion for me, but there were some very amusing and touching parts that brought a smile to my face. Devereaux manages to tug at the heart strings without being overly saccharine or compromising character integrity.
If you're looking for something with the complexity of Gabaldon's writing, you may end up disappointed with this.. But if you want a light read that centers around a dashing knight, a modern woman and a healthy dose of humor, this book is well worth the asking price.

This was the first time travel romance I ever read when it first came out-I don't even know if the genre had been around before then. But I can say without fail that this book is the gold standard that I judge all time travel romances against! I won't give a synopsis, as there are several here already but I can say without a doubt, if you enjoy time travel romance, you will love this book. Jude Deveraux is an excellent romance writer and all her books are worth reading.

I kind of liked this book and other times I wanted to strangle the main character. The book started out so well. She's stuck in a bad relationship and a knight in shining armor comes to save her. There were just so many ways to approach this theme but Jude Deveraux took the really long and painful route.

The main character was so annoying I wanted to stop reading at times and finally did after that weird Calculator scene. I felt bad for Dougless in the beginning and wanted her to find her happiness like in all romance novels. But as I continued to read, I started to feel like she really deserved crappy boyfriends for being so damn stupid. She's too emotional and weak and her only winning characteristic is that she likes to help people. That's it? That's what makes a playboy fall in love with her? She's whiny and she cried too much in the beginning of the book. She's weak and I can't stand her indecisiveness. She doesn't know what she wants and I wanted to hurt her for even considering going back to her lousy boyfriend. She's an idiot. She's a jealous, petty person and she's always muttering sarcastically under her breath. She thinks she's so witty and I just wanted to roll my eyes.

The biggest problem I had with her was that she was pretty selfish. Nicholas needed her help and all she could think about was her own needs and relationships. His past was hundreds of years ago to her, but it just yesterday to him. She acted like the past didn't matter because it was too long ago and was very insensitive to him. I couldn't understand why he would ever be attracted to her. All she can think about half the time is finding a man and getting married. That's like her only goal in life. Anyway, since I really couldn't connect with her or even like her, I didn't like the book very much and eventually stopped reading.

Aside from Dougless, I liked all the other characters and thought the author's writing style was pretty decent. It's the main character that that made the book flawed, which pretty much killed the book for me. I couldn't finish this book and I probably won't read another book from hers seeing how everyone's already said this was her best one. Other people might enjoy this book though if they're into that type of heroine.

This is, without a doubt, one of the all time greats. I've read a gazillion romance books over the years, and this is among my top ten reads. I haven't read it in a while, and it's probably starting to show its age (like me) within the context of today's historical romance, but even now, 15 years later, I still get goosebumps when I think of Nicholas Stafford...

This is a great book to read. The plot is very well developed and you just fall in love with the main characters. Time trave seemed like an if'y subject but Deveraux does a great job with details. In the beginning Dougless is lost and passive you feel really bad for her. Its interesting as she comes out of her shell and learns that her strength can chnage not only her own future but that of the man she loves. She proves to be a strong, passionate, msart adn innovative heroine. At times you can almost feel her love as well as her pain. Nicholas .......can't help but find him so attractive!!!!! His sense of honor and the way that he dedicates himself to the poeple that he cares about is most endearing. The connection between these two is just amazing the way that they are so drawn to each other. Even though they are seperated several times it seems that they were destined to be together through the end of time not matter what era it is. This one is a must read .............. travel through time with these lovers desitned and determined to be together.

I picked up several Jude Deveraux novels at a library book sale. "Knight in Shining Armor" was the worst of the lot. Admittedly, I am not a great fan of time-travel romance, but this book totally ridiculous. Come on, people--Dougless travels 400 years back in time with her handbag, which just happens to contain a drugstore full of toiletries? I just wasn't convinced by the plot, and the characters were not that interesting to me either. I'll take a Judith McNaught or an Amanda Quick novel any day.

The moment I read about Nicholas I was in love, I love the way he spoke and the way he acted when he didn't know something and I love the way Dougless trying to teach him the things in our time. This book touched my heart and when it dose that then I know I will remember this book for a long time and I just might revisit with them one day :) Great Read

A beautiful light-hearted romance with endearing and plausible protagonists. The concept of love between lovers from different time periods is not new - but this one is extremely well-researched, and has humorous insights into how a 17th century knight might view zippers, paper and buses. The pictures drawn of the seventeenth century household gives a stark and harsh contrast to twentieth century life. What can I say? I love this story and return and laugh, and sigh at the twists and turns of the story..

This book sucked me in from the beginning. I would have given the book five stars, but I found Dougless Montgomery annoying at times and too desperate. Nicholas ended up being a great hero and the storyline was romantic. I enjoyed the dialogue in this book between the characters but especially between Nicholas and Dougless. Definitely the best Jude Deveraux book I have read.

A KNIGHT IN SHINING ARMOR is the fist book that I have read by Jude Deveraux, but after reading this, it most certainly won't be the last.

This book is about Dougless, (the modern-day heroine), who just can't seem to find a man who not just needs her, but wants her as well. They all seem to take advantage of her and her generosity. This time wasn't any different. That is, until she looks up and sees before her the man of her dreams - A knight in shining armor.

This knight is none other than Nicholas Stafford, a real-life 16 Century Earl. They soon discover that he was sent here to find out the reason for his death during the 16th Century, but in the process, love began to blooom, but not before he is sent back. Dougless, heartbroken, finds a way to go back in time, and even then, must once again earn the love that she once had with the Earl, realizing that he has forgotten everything about her and their love.

I just finished reading this book, and I honestly couldn't put it down. There is just something about this story that completely compelled me. Even though there were a few parts in the middle that were lagging, I thought that the end more than mad up for it. I also think that it was the fact that this book made me believe in true love, even if that love had to endure the span of over 400 years.

"'My soul will find yours'... Souls, not bodies, but souls."

I would recommend this book to all out there that want to find a book that shows a love that is fun, pasionate, and most of all enduring.

Can you imagine being so meant for someone that even the enormous obstacle of 4 centuries cannot stand in your way? Wow!! I would have gladly given this story 5 stars had the ending been different...however..the way this story was resolved left me so apalled and disappointed..I had to knock off 1 and 1/2 stars to make up for it...would I recommend this book? Yes...but be forewarned....it might not be exactly what you expect it to be.

An American woman, Dougless, from 1988 meets an aristocrat from 1564 Elizabethan England, Nicholas.
To give away more would be a pity...read it and enjoy it!

I was looking for a new romance book to read when my hand fell on this book. After reading the back cover, I thought to myself this one should be interesting. I'd never read a time travel book before. This book passes interesting and goes to amazing.
It begins in modern times with the female lead traveling to England with her boyfriend and his spoiled daughter. After being abandoned by those two, she has hit rock bottom. She cries for help at the foot of a statue. I thought the first few pages were difficult to get through. Then, the hero, Nicholas, appears and I was glued. He was pompous, arragant, and gorgeous. He also needed help. There's the catch...Douglass ends up helping him. While she's helping him in the 20th century, he's teaching her that she's stronger than she thinks. The way Ms. Deveraux writes makes the story easy to follow. I could literally "SEE" the characters, the places and the clothing. I really understood the female lead, Douglass Montgomery. I felt her dissapointments and cheered at her successes. I also cried when she felt the utter dispair at not being with her love or feeling depressed at who she is. I've never cried while reading a book, but this one is very believable. Then Douglass travels back to Nicholas' time. This was my favorite part of the whole story. We also get to see what life was like in Elizabethean times from the class distinctions to how families deal with one another. Douglass must warn Nicholas of dangers that will happen to him and his brother before she's returned to her time. They get to fall in love all over again.
By the end of the story, Douglass grows and becomes the woman she's always dreamed of being. It ended on a positive note which left me wanting more. When my eyes finally gave out and I had to rest them, I looked at the clock...it was almost dawn. This book got me hooked into Ms. Deveraux's other romances and I'm proud to be a fan. Every book of hers that comes out, I immediately buy and devour and have NEVER been dissapoointed.

I just finished reading this book and have read many romance novels but this has to be one of the best I've ever read!! Jude Deveraux did an excellent job in making this a believable and highly romantic story. I didn't think I'd like the time travel aspect but I loved it. Douglass (the female charachter) was very likeable, quirky, and not always perfection (which I liked about her) while Nicholas, the Knight in Shining Armor, was very sexy, charming, real and had the charachteristics of a normal man, not just the hero. I also highly enjoyed the other charachters. I loved despising Gloria and Robert. I loved Honoria and even Lady Margaret. I loved them all and watching them come to life and to see the irony between the charachters in the 16th century to those in the 20th.
I found the book to be adventurous and suspenseful as well. I had a hard time putting the book down, that's when I know I'm hooked! I liked the ending I just wish it were a little more involved with the "passenger", maybe if we could have seen a little more twist of fate. Other than that I loved, loved, loved this book and highly recommend it to anyone who wants a great summer read, or an anytime read.

I am in love with the concept of your "knight in shining armor" coming to save you. When i saw this book at Borders, i thought, This is going to be GREAT. It took me a while to get into it. Since the book was around 450 pages, I knew the first hundred weren't going to be that good. I was right. It took me so long to get into the book. My best friend kept telling me that historical romances are the best. I had never read a historical romance and so far, it wasn't good. But boy, once you get past the first 100 pages, you cannot take your eyes off that book. It was absolutely wonderful. It was all i could ask from a book. It was the first book i couldn't put down other than "A Walk to Remember" by Nicholas Sparks. I'm not a fast reader. I finished the book in a little less than a week. Believe me, that is good for me. When i was getting closer to the end, i knew what was going to happen. She'd stay in the past with him. I JUST KNEW IT. But it took me for a total surprise when she didn't. I wasn't that impressed with the end. But she made it all come together and that was still good. I mean GREAT. It would have been wonderful for her to stay with Nicholas, but the end was still good. =) I absolutely give this 5 stars. It was a great read and so far my favorite book. This was the book that started my passion for reading. I very highly reccomend this book.

The stars were aligned just perfectedly when Ms. Deveraux wrote this '80's modern take of Somewhere in time. Sorry but this is what the story reminds me of. This is what romance is all about and if you aren't smiling by the end of this story then you have circuit loose or something. I don't read too much of Deveraux any more--for me her peak was with this book and 'The Duchess'. But maybe one day, I'll see if the magic has returned--until then-I have this perfect book to remind me of the good times.

I simply adore this book - it's one of my favorites by Jude Deveraux. I was hesitant to read it at first because of the whole "time-travel" plot but I am so happy I decided to.
The story has laughs, romance, and you may even shed a tear or two. And the "time-travel" plot actually gives this story more appeal in that it's almost like you get two stories in one.

I read this book in a single evening...that should say it all, but if not here is more. A Knight in Shining Armor is absolutely enchanting. It is everything you could hope for from a romance. There is intrigue, time travel, and the writing is superb. The characters are strong, witty, and after all this time, after all the books I have devoured I still remember Douglass Montgomery and Nicholas Stanford as one of my favorite romantic pairs. Of course that could be because I have read this book over and over, bought another because I have worn the previous one out, and reread it once again. The culture of England is richly described, the setting decadent and fulfilling. Jude Deveraux has magic at her fingertips. She has turned out one amazing book after another. There is no questioning her talents as a writer. She makes writing appear effortless.
Sit back and enjoy. If you feel differently I will have to pass it off as you having a bad day.

This one really blew me away. I have read so many romances that most, although they might be entertaining at the time, get lost in the shuffle of my memory once over with. This story, however, will stay with me for a long time to come.

The time travel element was done very convincingly. It made me feel like although time travel isn't possible, (yet!) this is how it would be if it could happen. Although some other reviewers have called Dougless "pathetic", I don't agree at all. She does let men walk over her a bit, but it is understandable, in my opinion. She is in desperate search of love and wants to settle down. she is probably overly accepting of men's flaws because she just wants to get along with them.

Nicholas is just what the doctor ordered! He thinks she's great, and he lets her know it! Yes, he is a bit stuffy and high-handed, but come on! He's from the 1500's for god's sake! Of course he's going to act a little different than your average 20th century guy!

What I loved about this book was that I could really feel the love between Dougless and Nicholas. Sometimes romance authors will tell you that there is chemistry between characters, yet it is hard to see it for yourself. Not this one! I really enjoyed watching these two overcome a huge time barrier, get to know each other and fall in love.

Another thing I loved about this book was the history intertwined with the romance. I find the reformation time period fascinating and I thought that a good amount of historical detail was incorporated into this story. it wasn't so much that it became a history book, but it convincingly portrayed the time period. I liked how some of the novel took place in the present day, and some in the 16th century. That was a nice touch. What was also nice is that the book actually had a plot. Investigating nicholas's past brought the main characters together, and gave them opportunities to really get to know each other.

Oh and Nicholas's facsination with all things modern is very entertaining and endearing.

This book succeeded where countless other romances have failed. I truly believed that the hero and heroine were in love, and that they belonged together. This romance feels real. That is why it is so memorable.

The end is very touching. I won't give too much away, but I will just tell you that I cried. Like full-blown sobbing. This is really saying something, because I have read so many romances that it takes a very unique one to get any kind of strong emotion out of me. But this one had me up all night long, crying in the dark after I turned out the light. But it wasn't depressing. It was just so tragic and wonderful at the same time that I had to cry :)

READ IT! I loved it, and if you are a fan of romance, I'm almost sure you will too.

I know it sounds cliche, but it made me laugh, it made me cry, and I will definitely read it again!! It's pretty much every woman's fantasy(well, maybe not spending a month in the 16th century!!), with the light-hearted right alongside the sad.
This is very easily one of my favorite books of all time. Second perhaps only to Julie Garwood's "The Bride". But I digress. I can't really pinpoint the exact thing that makes this book so wonderful, but I can tell you that by the last page, you'll be crying and laughing at the same time you're cheering for Dougless. Truly a great read, and one that I have trouble putting down no matter how many times I've read it.
If you don't buy another book this year, please, PLEASE treat yourself and buy this one!!!!!! A fabulous story, great characters, a beautiful plot, the works!!! Buy it, or you'll have missed a true gem of a book.

This book is one in a billion. What's really strong about this book is that it shows the abilities of love. In this book, Love is so powerful that it can change history. Love is so powerful that even four-hundred years cannot separate a bond that the hero and heroine have.

Nicholas Stafford--accused of treason in the sixteenth century finds Dougless Montgomery crying on his tomb.

The classic time travel romance. The classic romance.

This is my first J Deveraux book. The begining was hard to put up with. I hated for the heroine to be so weak of character. However, as the story progressed, I was able to experience her change step by step until she became a strong and confident woman. This is a story of hope and love that surpasses all barriers of time. I also enjoyed the small bits of historical fact regarding everyday living in Elizabethan times. For a time travel story, it was an enjoyable one. I'll probably be buying more Deveraux novels...

When this book begins you are ready to start shouting "Stop being a ninny Douglas!" before the end of the first two chapters. We especially hate her boyfriend and his spiteful daughter. But then, we meet her soon to be love and we are spellbound, finding ourselves cheering them on in this story of love and heartbreak. Truly a work of art and as an avid reader of mrs. deveraux, this is one of her finest.

I can't believe it took me so long to get around to reading "A Knight in Shining Armor." I loved everything about it. Dougless was the perfect heroine--exactly what this story needed. She was emotional at times, perhaps too emotional for some readers, but that deep, overwhelming, RAW emotion was the very force that called Nicholas to her. Nicholas was the perfect romantic hero and Knight in Shining Armor. I loved his intelligent (but rakish!) personality, as well as his capacity to care so deeply about a woman. I cried at the ending, of course. I wanted it to go a different way, but as I continued to think about it, I realized it was the perfect romantic ending to a perfectly WONDERFUL, poignant story. Loved it!

My first ever Jude Deveraux book that I read was the Raider and since then I have been a fan of her work. A Knight in Shining Armor is by far her BEST BOOK EVER! I love everything about it. The plot sucks you in within the first couple pages. The heroine isn't the typical mongomery. She isn't like the others because she doesn't have it easy as her family. She is anything but a montgomery. and I love her for it. I loved Nick. I wish he was my night in shining armor! PICK UP THIS BOOK ASAP!

I read the book when it was first out (1995?) and haven't forgotten it in detail yet! I loved the evoluation of the Knight's transference from a knight of his own time to a modern day man (picked up by looking at his daily habits; how those habits slowly changed to a more modern sensitive man). I adored the character portrayed in the heroine. The two were a perfect match. I laughed THROUGHOUT the first half of the book. About midway I began to sniffle. When I finished, I sobbed so hard I was afraid of waking my husband (3 a.m.). Any book that can make me laugh AND cry certainly is worth reading and remembering. It is absolutely one of the most memorable books I have ever read. Give Ms. Deveraux a hand for such realistic, loveable characters. Wish she would write more about the ones she used in this particular book. I look forward to rereading the book in later years (I still remember it too well to reread it right now). You don't forget this book!

I read this book about 10 years ago. Usually if I can't get into a book within the first couple of pages it ends up in the reject pile. I wanted to yell at Douglass to dump that jerk Robert and throw his daughter into the Thames! For some reason I kept on reading, and was I ever hooked! The story is wonderful! A 16th century knight in a 20th century world and a 20th century woman in a 16th century world! I'll bet he looked dashing in his Armani! My original copy got lost years ago and I just reordered it to reread. It's as great now as it was the first 5 times I read it!

I was iffy about reading a time travel. If you've ever read one and you couldn't bring yourself to like it, you must try this one. It puts all others to shame. You'll never forget this story. Ask anyone who's read it. You shouldn't miss reading this book at least one time in your life. You'll read it and try your best to get your friends to read it too. My friends loved it and so did their friends.

When I think of a romance novel, this is exactly what I think of. It has everything you need: romance (duh), intrigue, interesting character development, sex, clever and witty dialogue, and a good story. A Knight in Shining Armor is everything. It's the best, especially if you're looking for that mix of contemporary and historical that comes with a time travel romance. This is really a marvelous book. I can't stress this enough.

I have been reading romance novels for over 12 years, and I have never had one affect me the way this one did. I got ANGRY, LAUGHED, CRIED. I just can't recommend this book highly enough. I lent it to a friend and never got it back because she lent it to a friend and so-on. So I purposely went and bought another copy so I could keep it on-hand. LOVE IT JUDE!!

This was my first book by Jude Deveraux. The first half was great but something happens in the middle that makes it as so the whole story is starting from the beginning and I didn't like how the relationship was rushed during the second half. The ending was very touching. If I wasn't on anti-depressants I probably would have bawled my eyes out. :)

I don't like books that are set in the 80's. I try to block out that decade as much as possible and pretend that it was all just a dream. Yikes! I kept thinking that they would go back to the 1500's but it took soooooo long. Dougless was way too needy and unlikable throughout the first 1/3 of the book that I almost didn't continue reading. Once they did return to the 1500's the book became a little more enjoyable.

SPOILER***
I didn't like the quick fix at the end. I kept thinking about poor Nicholas spending his entire life alone. It wasn't a happily ever after for me.

I've read this book half dozen times. I hardly ever re-read a book. This book goes to the heart of my die hard romantic self. Heartmates thru out time and space find each other time and again. This book has more depth than any other of Deveraux books. Great Read!

I treasure this book and will not give it away, although I will loan one of my copies to somebody I like to share the enjoyment. I laughed, I cried, I got almost nothing else done while I read it. For me it ranks up there with "Whitney, My Love" by Judith McNaught and "Outlander" by Diana Gabaldon as a treasure to keep and re-read.

I agree with one of the reviewers who said it was difficult to read this book straight through. That happened to me the first time. I began reading it again after my friend was so adamant about it being the ultimate romance book. I was glad I finished the book. I loved the ending and it made up for a lagging beginning and okay middle. The thing I loved most (the thing that makes me sigh whenever I think about this book) is the concept of soul mates. How wonderful is it to know that your soul mate is out there somewhere, maybe in your time, maybe not...but no matter what, he/she will find you wherever you are. I loved the passion, the fear that your mate might disappear with a single touch, and the rekindling and growing of love when you find your mate again. Such devotion Nicholas showed at the end.

This is the first romance novel I've read that involved time travel and other impossible things.

I read this when i was 13...16 years ago. I still remember the scenes (like Dougless performing Broadway tunes for the Lady/Earl's mother) and showering in the fountain... or Nicholas traipsing around the english countryside in his armor. I must have read it more than 10 times. Its truly riveting!

Some people were harsh in judging this book... i like to think that Deveraux is a realist with her characterizations, plots and devices, and in the end, a big sappy romantic. She even believes in souls meeting forward, backwards and reincarnation.

The best part is, she made me believe it too! :) LOVE CONQUERS ALL!!!!!!

If you can only read 5 romance novels in your life, this has GOT TO BE one of them.

This book is such a well researched and written in such a provoking manner that my English professor in high school was permitted to use it as required reading for our senior year. The historical content is stupendous and the story is riveting, unlike most of the classics we are forced to read. I think that everyone should read it at least once.

I couldn't stop reading. I couldn't believe some reviews when the people said that they don't like it, because I just love it, I cried but, when I ended it i felt so good, so happy. I normally do not read books a second or third time, but this book I have read dozens of times. It is the most romantic tale of star and time crossed love. It gives you the feeling that "Love" conquers all. It leaves you feeling happy and with hope. The book is so compelling, it is hard to put down even if you've already read it. I really wish they would make this into a movie. I can see Brendan Fraser in the starring role as the "Knight"
I highly recommend giving this book a chance. You won't regret it.

I have read all of Jude Deveraux's works and I think this is THE BEST of all her novels. From the first time I read it, I fell in love with the characters and wept when it ended. Every year since I take it faithfully with me when I am on vacation and re-read it again. (that's about 21 times!) Like one of the other reviewers I wish it was made into a movie, I would buy it and watch it over and over again. I love the tales of the Montgomery and Taggert families with all their trials and tribulations and this is the best of them all.
I would highly recommend this book and all of Jude Deveraux's works to anyone who loves to read romance novels on a rainy afternoon. They stay with you forever.

The book was surprisingly entertaining. I was a bit skeptical at first too because of the whole time travel element of the book. It can be hard to pull off, but Jude Deveraux did a good job. It was funny and romantic. I would have liked a bit more suspense and action to the book. I felt sometimes that things were solved too easily and quickly. I loved the ending though. I loved how the heroine and hero changed and the message of soulmates being brought together. It was very sweet and I definitely would recommend it to any romance reader.

I loved the first half of the book where Nicholas came forward in time. The last half of the book was fair at best. It was just too, too hard to believe that she travelled back with her bag full of magic and that those people accepted it so easily. Often I did not care for Douglass' choice of words. They just weren't believeable.

But Jude Deveraux is one of my favorite historical romance authors so I figured it was worth a shot. I was taken for a really fun ride with this book. Characters are well developed and you really find yourself involved with them. I would recommend this to anyone for an enjoyable adventure.

Where do I begin...I have, like most true romance fans, read thousands and thousands of books. This book and very few others stand alone as books I have re-read and re-read again and again!

The only other books that I keep in my bedstand drawer are:

Princess-Gaelen Foley

Whitney, my Love-Judith McNaught

Seize The Fire-Laura Kinsale

Suddenly You-Lisa Kleypas

Dreaming of You-Lisa Kleypas

And, this is the ONLY book that I have truly CRIED MY EYES OUT (Like, eyes swollen shut the next morning, snot everywhere kinda crying!) at the end...it is just such an enduring story of real true, true, TRUE love! You must read it! YOU MUST!! :-)
