Review courtesy of Dark Faerie Tales
Quick & Dirty: Our favorite Spider comes out of the shadows to save a friend from a stalker, and exact a little revenge at the same time.
Opening Sentence: The bastards never even would have gotten close to me if I hadn't had the flu.
The Review:
What entices Gin from her comfortable bar stool in her beloved Pork Pit? Well, getting the crap beat out of her is a start. Also, when you find out that a friend who is suffering because she helped you out might be incentive enough. It might be because Gin finally finds her long lost sister, who happens to be a cop. Some days, you have to wonder what Gin ever did to Fate to piss her off so bad.
Gin Blanco is a semi-retired assassin that now runs the Pork Pit, the best BBQ restaurant in Ashland. I say semi-retired because she is slightly bored and keeps doing jobs for friends and underdogs for free; much to the dismay of her foster brother, Finn. Her last job brought attention to one of Finn's, and sometimes Gin's, friend and co-conspirator Roslyn Phillips. Roslyn is a vampire madam that is being stalked by one of Ashland's big wigs, Elliot Slater. Elliot is bad news under normal circumstances, but he has been known to have a high mortality rate among his girlfriends. Now that he has set his sights on Roslyn, Gin feels guilty for her involvement in them meeting. Gin has always showed a strong loyal streak when it comes to her friends in the past. She also has a strict moral code that makes her feel responsible for Roslyn's dangerous position. The debt she feels drives her recklessness in rescuing Roslyn from her fate, including drawing the attention of the local police.
Bria Coolidge is the new detective in town. She also happens to be the long lost sister of Gin. Bria is strong of character and doesn't back down when things get hard; kind of like her big sister. She tries her best to be a good cop in a very corrupt town. She also knows that there is more to Gin that what meets the eye, and she is not going to stop until she finds out all her dirty secrets. Though Gin knows the truth of their relationship, she can't bring herself to tell it to Bria. Past experience has taught Gin to fear rejection. Can Bria, a straight shooter, love Gin as she is? Will Gin's past be too much for Bria like it was for the sexy absentee detective Donovan Caine?
Speaking of Donovan Caine, Gin has a new love interest in this novel; Owen Grayson. Owen made his debut in the last book and has made his interest in Gin quite obvious. He also has a past that is dark and doesn't hold Gin's past against her. We also learn about the first time Gin and Owen meet, so many years ago. Gin is constantly testing his resolve by flaunting her past and her darker solutions toward problems. She keeps expecting Owen to be disgusted with her just like Donovan was. Will Gin open herself up to yet another man who may reject her? If she does let Owen in, will her experiences with Donovan always overshadow their relationship?
Gin takes an ambitious stand at the end of this book. Will she survive long enough to avenge her family or is she seriously outclassed? This series just keeps getting better with each book. As much as Gin roots for the underdog, I too am hoping that the Spider comes out on top.
FTC Advisory: Pocket Books graciously provided me with a copy of Venom. No goody bags, sponsorships, "material connections," or bribes were exchanged for my review. The only payment received came in the form of hugs and kisses from my little boys.

Venom begins with Gin Blanco gearing up to assimilate the information revealed to her at the end of book two, when she learns that Mab Munroe had a particularly cruel hand in the demise of her family. Gin realizes that from now on she will have to be extra careful and persistent if she wants to take down Mab Munroe and her underlings, but before that can happen, Blanco has a rather unfortunate encounter with Mab's right and left hands: Elliot Slater and Jonah McAllister. Jonah is still vexed at Gin due to the disappearance of his son in the climactic events of the second book. So Gin is forced to take a severe beating in order to hide her identity and come out alive. Around the same time, Elliot Slater takes a rather special interest in Roselyn, the vampire madam who supplied the men & women for the party in the climax to Web Of Lies. Slater's violent fascination with Roselyn fuels the majority of the plot threads in Venom. Also introduced in the book are Bria Coolidge, Gin's long-lost baby sister who is searching for her family and has an interest in Mab Munroe, and Owen Grayson who has taken a liking to Blanco and might have a previous connection with her as well. Personally, Venom was my favourite entry in the series so far as it has the perfect amount of action and intrigue, while also introducing some interesting new characters into the mix.
Venom is a entertaining book full of action, while seamlessly fitting in with the clues and subplots developed in the earlier books. Prose meanwhile is commendable, deftly describing both action scenes and romance, while the fast pacing of the books never lets the reader's attention slacken. Drawbacks include the predictability of the story. While there are a few surprises in store for the reader, overall the plot seems to be heading to a certain conclusion. This isn't such a bad thing as the author has done her best to give the readers a polished and entertaining ride in spite of the predictable nature of the tale. Lastly with the ever expanding character cast, not enough time is available for all of them to be developed as fully fledged characters.
CONCLUSION: In Spider's Bite and Web of Lies, Jennifer Estep wrote two books that got the Elemental Assassin series off to a good start, now with Venom, she's slowly but surely arranging the requisite pieces for the explosive finale. So now's the time to jump in if you happen to like stories about an assassin bent on revenge, a quirky supporting cast, and generous helpings of action, humor & romance...

Third book and still going awesome!!! Before we even get into anything else may I say OWEN!!!! Oh my goodness I jumped Teams so fast I can't even believe it. You know in Spider's Bite I was really rooting for Donovan, and maybe even a little in Web of Lies. But by the end of book 2 I was glad to see the mofo was going away. And in book 3 I am super glad he did not come back. I just freaking LOVED Owen. What a perfect match!
Venom was amazing. All the characters we love our back and of course nothing is going easy. For a retired assassin Gin still does a lot of killing. The only down side is well she isn't getting paid. I don't want to go into the whole plot but just be prepared for awesomeness!!
I can't believe the risk Gin took in this book and I am scared of what that'll mean for her and those close to her. Finn kicked some major ass this time around (I love him), Bria is an interesting addition and I can't wait to see how that all goes. Lots of revelations and I loved her dreams just so I could get a good look at her past. Then there is OWEN! Sexy, bad ass and well I am in LOVE! So much freaking awesomeness in one book. Gin is a killing machine but a totally loveable character.
This series is so addicting. Once I started book 1 I was hooked. I haven't read anything else since. And I am not about to change that at all. Here I come Tangled Threads!.

The action just keeps building in this latest installment of the Elemental Assassin series, "Venom." Demoralizing boy scout Donovan Caine has left town and has taken a piece of retired-assassin Gin's heart along with him. (I'm sticking pins into his voo-doo doll likeness as I write this review.) But Gin soldiers on, despite the toll his rejection has taken upon her. And it's a good thing she can stay on her toes, because retired or not, someone else is in need her special brand of justice.
This time, it's vampire-madam Rosyln Phillips. It seems crime-lord Mab Monroe's muscle man, Elliot Slater, has been stalking her. More specifically, he is forcing her to be in a sick parody of a relationship with him, under the threat of violence. Slater is already on Gin's radar, since he beat the stuffing out of her for Mab's lawyer, Jonah McAllister. The attorney was trying to figure out if Gin knew anything about his son's death. (Of course, we know she killed him and stuffed him in Mab's bathtub in "Web of Lies (Elemental Assassin, Book 2)," but our bad-guys don't figure it out.) Anyway, Gin vows to kill Slater, more to protect Roslyn than anything. But it won't be easy. Slater is a giant. He is strong and fast and is surrounded by guards of his own.
There are several other big points I can't ignore. Bria, the little sister Gin thought was dead, shows up in Ashland... as the replacement for Caine. That's right, she's a detective and one who is not corrupt. Should Gin tell her who she is? What she does?
And we've got Owen Grayson, Gin's new love interest. Finally, a man who sees her for her strengths. But will he still feel the same when he finds out she is a killer?
All this, plus the added intrigue surrounding the murder of Gin's mother and sister. She now knows who killed them, but can she do anything about it?
I love this series. I love Gin. And I will be waiting with bells on when "Tangled Threads (Elemental Assassin, Book 4)" comes out in April. 5 stars.

The third book in the Elemental Assassin series begins when Gin gets caught by Mab and her minions when she least expects it. So she has to literally let herself get hurt in order to throw them off her tail. It works, but not with out first really hurting Gin. And when the cops show up she never expected to find her sister Bria to be the one there to help her. Now she's got Mab, and her goons to worry about and her sister's appearance. Then when Gin sets out to help a friend get rid a problem, more and more problems seem to be dropping into her lap.
This series just gets better and better with each book. However I was a little disappointed with all of Gin's mess ups in this one. But she more than made up for it in the end with a huge bang. Literally and figuratively! And I seriously am starting to like Owen a lot. He is a lot better than Donovan was to Gin, but I still sort of worry about him at times. Now I can not wait to see what Gin's next move will be!

In this third installment of the Elemental Assassin series, Gin has started moving forth on her vow on vengeance against the Fire Elemental, Mab Monroe, who murdered her family. But first, Gin must help a friend who has a stalker issue. Fortunately for her, the stalker is none other than Mab Monroe's goon, Elliot Slater. How is that for fate? I think Gin sums it up very well on page 102:
"I'm just wondering how exactly I went from being the Spider to the Robin f***ing Hood of the greater Ashland area. Three months ago, I was killing people for money. Lots of money. Buckets of it. Now, tell me a good sob story instead and I'll take care of all your problems for free. Instead of stealing from the rich, I'm stabbing them to death for the poor."
As you can see, Gin is snarky as ever. Also developing is her relationship with the gorgeous Owen Grayson. Hopefully she can get over the hurt that Donovan Caine has brought down upon her. And speaking of the absent Donovan Caine, it looks like fate has another surprise for Gin. The police force has hired Bria Coolidge (Gin's baby sister) to fill Caine's vacant spot. Gin isn't the only one that knows Bria is alive, Mab has found out too. Now Gin must protect Bria and figure out how to kill Elliot Slater.
This was probably not my favorite of the series but it wasn't a letdown. By the end those feelings were erased and I became excited about what will come in the next book.

Former assassin, Gin Blanco still occasionally relies upon her skills as a killer to help those who can't fight back for themselves. Gin's latest favor is for a vampire acquaintance, who is getting stalked by an evil giant. The giant, unfortunately, works for Mab Monroe, Gin's nemesis. To complicate matters, Gin's sister Bria just moved to town, working as a police detective. And Mab knows who Bria is and wants her dead.
Gin is still facing the after-effects of her recent assassinations, and trying to avoid blame with her restaurant owner alter ego. She is also still reeling from heartbreak of a former flame leaving her because of what she does. But Gin has another love interest waiting in the wings, one that appreciates all of Gin's qualities. Their chemistry is steamy, and I can't wait to learn more about Owen. Gin is a brutal assassin with a big heart. Characters don't get much more complex than this.
This is the third exciting installment in the Elemental Assassin series. Action-packed and full of suspense from page one, Estep never disappoints. Her characters are vivid, her world is imaginative, and her stories are captivating. With the arrival of Gin's sister, we learn more about their past and the reason Mab killed their family. Gin's vengeance towards Mab is coming to a head, and I can't wait to see where Estep takes them. With plenty of startling twists, the tension builds to a surprising and satisfying ending.

My thoughts...If you are looking for a fierce, no-nonsense character, then you will love Gin Blanco.
This is the third book in the Elemental Assassin series, so if you have not read Spider's Bite or Web of Lies, you should definitely start there. This third book feels pivotal to me. Gin has reached an edge. She has lost so much in her short time and she has been defeated by love. This fact makes her character, while still tough as nails, very vulnerable. I developed a new appreciation for her character in this installment. She became so much more likable and relatable. Don't get me wrong, she is still just as fierce, even more so than before. But that vulnerability makes me like her more.
I am pleased with the other characters in Venom as well. We get to read more about the handsome Finn. We see more of Owen Grayson, who I love compared to that close-minded detective. A bit more is revealed about the mysterious sisters and Bria.
The action is once again non-stop. Estep leaves readers little time to catch their breath between scenes. It is still violent, bloody, and gritty, but retired or not, Gin is still the Spider. There were more world details revealed, as well as more fuel to the fire against Mab Monroe. As usual, I enjoyed reading the magic Gin created in the kitchen as well as the development of her elemental magic. I can't wait to see what happens in the fourth book.

Jennifer Estep is awesome! This is the third book in the series, just as good as the first and second. Some people say she is real repetitive, but I didn't really notice it to the point where I was annoyed. A lot of time when I read books where regular people know about paranormal activities, or (for example) worlds where humans know about vampires, I don't feel like they are meshed quite properly. Gin is an elemental, a person that has magical control (power) of an element. In the world of the book, not everyone is an elemental, and it feels like it came together at the seams flawlessly. While Gin is certainly the typical female heroin, she displays enough traits that remind you she is perfectly human and has problems just like everybody else. I definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting to have a relaxing night alone with a good book. After you read the first 2, of course. On a sidenote, I emailed the author to discuss her book; not only did she respond back a few times, she was genuine and quick to respond to any questions I had. She has definitely gained a loyal fan through me!

Gin Blanco, aka the Spider, is a retired assassin, but that doesn't mean she keeps out of trouble. In the previous book, Gin killed Jonah McAllister's son, but for good reason. He had threatened to torture and rape her. But now Jonah wants the person responsible to pay. Jonah is the lawyer for Ashland's powerful fire elemental, Mab Monroe. Gin, a stone elemental herself has had it out for Mab after she learned Mab killed her family many years ago. Mab doesn't know Gin is an elemental, one that can control either fire, air, stone or ice - and Gin is just fine with keeping her secret.
But before she can take out Mab, she has other problems to deal with. Her acquaintance Rosyln, a vampire, is being stalked and harassed by the giant Elliot Slater. Although Gin is trying to leave the assassin business behind, she can't help but interfere when someone innocent is being wronged. Jumping back into action, Gin decides to help Roslyn out - and it just so happens Elliot works for Mab. Taking him out, will be a hit against her biggest enemy. With the help of her best friend Finn, and the dwarf sister Sophia and Jo-Jo, Gin goes against a very formidable foe.
Venom continues this wonderful world Jennifer Estep has created and gives us lots of answers that have been dangling from the first two books, but also gives us plenty of new things to chew on. My favorite thing about this series is our heroine Gin. If you wrong her she will kill you and not have an ounce of regret in the morning. If you treat her well, or if you've been wronged, there is not a single thing that will stop her from helping you. She is loyal, sarcastic and lethal. Venom continues Gin's journey for answers about her family's murder when she was a teenager. Ultimately setting up for the epic battle between Gin and Mab in a future book.
While I have waxed on about my love for Gin in previous reviews, I must hit on the supporting characters. First, Finnegan Lane. Oh Finn, whom acts like a brother towards Gin. Finn has the same kind of attitude that Gin has, except he focuses on having sex with lots and lots of women instead of the killing part. But, he has no regrets about his actions, just like Gin. They are a great team and his character really adds so much to these books.
We also really get to know Owen Grayson in this book. We first meet him in the previous book, Web of Lies, where Owen becomes a love interest for Gin. Before this book, I was a little hurt that the uber sexy Donovan Caine left Gin because he couldn't deal with the fact that she is a criminal. I was very interested to learn more about Owen - and I have to say he surprises me in a very good way. Owen is a smexy, smexy hunk of a man and I hope he sticks around for awhile.
Sometimes I wanted to strap seven guns to Gin instead of her armload of knives she carries around. Gin is very comfortable with knives supplementing her elemental powers, but sometimes she would get into situations where I thought a bullet to the face might be easier than slashing a throat. Otherwise, I think the action in this book is really done well. Jennifer Estep holds nothing back and that makes this dark world really stand out. This book is an excellent addition to this series and book four, Tangled Threads is going on my "I want it now!!!" list.

Venom (Elemental Assassin, Book 3) by Jennifer Estep
Paranormal Romance- Sept. 28th, 2010
5 stars
I can't believe it but this series only gets better!! Gin is the coolest assassin ever. This latest installment holds nothing back as Gin rushes headlong into: another mission, a missing sister and repeated attempts on her life.
Venom starts out explosively as Gin is being viciously beaten by the powerful fire elemental Mab Monroe and her vicious henchmen. But Gin does not fight back. She realizes she must pretend she has no elemental skills to convince Mab that she is harmless. But the beating injures Gin near death. Her dashing friend Finn must rescue her into the capable hands of the healing air elemental Jo-Jo.
However, what Gin does not expect is the police's quick response to her assault and the new detective investigating the scene. A detective who happens to be Gin long lost sister, Bria! Now Gin must decide if she should reveal herself to her sister and how best to protect Bria from the powerful players that she is beginning to anger. Because Gin isn't just the owner of the famous restaurant the Pork Pit but also a deadly (if retired) assassin. Someone who a detective may not appreciate or accept. But soon Gin finds herself drawn into more trouble when she is asked to help a victim of a powerful stalker.
This was another thrilling novel in the Elemental series. Each book brings us closer to Gin's shady history and the mystery behind her family's devastating murders. Gin has flashbacks that key the reader into clues about their deaths. I really enjoy learning more about Gin and the author does so in a way that makes her more human and sympathetic. Gin's spunky crime fighting sister was a really pleasure to read and I longed for them to have a meaningful relationship. Finn as usual has the devilish charm and I have a sneaking suspicions there will be a love interest for him?! Also secrets are exposed concerning the dwarf Sophia and her unearthly control over her powers which only lead to more unanswered questions concerning her traumatic past.
The more the author reveals the more she cleverly keep under wraps for her next book. Argh! However, she neatly avoids leaving the reader feeling the ending of each her books are unsatisfying unresolved or the reader feeling depressingly cheated. I found myself just eagerly anticipating more!!
This series is an unusual Urban Fantasy series because while it has darker aspects the characters are neither disheartened nor cynical but ready for anything. They have a charming optimism that the reader knows they will overcome any obstacle. But what I love most is the real sense of camaraderie and warmth between the characters.
Enthralling, fun and super addictive don't start this book unless you intend to finish it immediately!

Venom, Book 3 of the Elemental Assassin saga is probably my favorite of the series. It really hits its stride and some major developments go down that made me simply HAVE to know how the next book would turn out.
Per usual, this book starts off with a bang. If you're at all squeamish, this may not be the series for you. Gin suffers...a LOT. But we learn just how dedicated she is to keeping her double-life a secret as well as her elemental powers.
This time, past decisions come back to haunt her as Rosayln Phillips, a vampire and owner of a nightclub, ends up tormented by Elliott Slater. He's Mab Monroe's top henchmen and he didn't get there by being stupid or weak. He's a ruthless and crazy sociopath that becomes a little more than a one dimensional bad guy this time around. I was certainly disturbed by his behavior. He ends up involved with Phillips (against her will) after Gin used Rosalyn to call in a favor in the Web of Lies (book 2). Feeling guilty, Gin makes it her mission to take care of him, but he is quite a formidable opponent. Through him, she inches closer to Mab Monroe, and more secrets about her past are revealed.
To add a double whammy, Gin ends up confronted by her sister in the flesh. Except there's one problem, she is working for the other side of the law. She's come to town replacing Donovan Caine, only adding to the complications in Gin's life.
I certainly didn't miss Caine in this book. He never really added much to the series for me as a love interest. I was slightly annoyed with how Gin continued to be hung up on his rejection of her. I mean, really, their "relationship" was so short-lived, I didn't really see the significance in it. And his reaction would have been any normal person's reaction. Never fear though. Owen Grayson's here. If Estep was going to bother with a love-interest angle, I think his character was a much needed addition to the series and it looks like he may have his own elemental abilities. I hope that he is used in the future to aid Gin in her missions, like Finn.
The ending was totally amazing. It made me very happy that I read this book late because I was left only wanting to read the next book. In just 3 books a lot has happened, keeping the plot fairly tight and focused. Estep does a pretty good job at reviewing what's happened in past books so that readers new to the series won't feel too left behind. Sometimes though, I don't know if it's because I've read the books all at once, but it feels slightly too repetitive here at there, especially with the character descriptions. I don't really know how many times I have to hear about Rosalyn's perfect figure, or how often Finn drinks chicory coffee.
With that annoyance aside, these books are fun and fast-paced short reads. They are written so that you don't have to have read the prior books, but obviously the world will seem richer if you do.

This is one action packed 3rd book in this series. I read this one quickly and can't wait for the next one. Oh what to say without spoiling it? Well, as the blurb states, she is helping Roslyn while getting her and her friends into it deeper with Mab Monroe, the baddest elemental out there (so far). She also finds her long lost sister, Bria and finds it hard to reconnect. Especially since she is the new detective taking Donovan Caine's place.
I also have to say a little bit about Owen Grayson. He is Gin's new love interest and I am squeeing! I admit I did not like Donovan Caine and the way he treated Gin. I am SO much happier with Owen. They compliment each other so much better. I could have used a bit more Owen in the story, but I suspect we will see more of him in the next installment of this series.
Okay, I've said as much as I dare. I enjoyed this book so much and I give it 5 stars. It is a great fast paced urban fantasy. You don't have to have read the others in the series to enjoy this one, but I suggest you do just because I have really enjoyed all the books so far!

Gin, the getting less retired all the time ex-assassin, starts this book by taking a severe beating to protect her identity. The theme of this book seems to revolve around Gin's need to protect, even if the people she strives to protect in this book get on my nerves a little by all the weeping and helplessness, especially considering what kind of creature the victim of this book is. I was surprised Gin was never once tempted to yell at the victim, who took forever to find any sort of backbone. But of course, I'm just not as patient as a spider.
I find myself loving Gin's sister, Bria Coolidge. She is another wonderfully, hard edged woman, beautifully crafted. I have a lot of hope for their relationship. (Personally, I also like how Gin's and Bria's last names pay subtle homage to their childhood last name, Snow. Blanco- White, Coolidge- Do you really need that one spelt out for you?)
I was also very glad that Donovan Caine was gone, but I was very disappointed in how long Gin moped about him. "Good grief, the guy was an emotional idiot, let him go already!" is what I yelled in my head for much of this book. Owen was a much better hero in my opinion. I just find him so sexy and emotionally gorgeous.
If I could, I would rank this book at 4.5. However, since I can't in honor of Donovan's departure and Owen making a much sexier hero, I'm tipping the balance to 5 stars.

I ordered the first three books in this series from Aamzon, reading the reviews and thinking I'll try a new author. The reviews from Spider's Bite looked promising and I did enjoy that book. Lies was ok, Venom was a loss. I completely agree with another reviewer that the author needs to stop reviewing background data and get on with the story. About 1/4 of Venom was cut and paste from the first two books explaining background data. For me that meant skipping over the duplicate parts and I kept wondering when the story would move. I'm shocked her editor didn't do something about the repetition. Sure Venom could stand on it's own if that's the only book you read in the series. But other authors have written a series and made each book stand on it's own without all the repetition. Think of Lord of the Rings. Or other amazing fantasy series.
Of course I read each book back to back and am still trying to get through Venom because it doesn't hold my interest. I am highly disappointed, it wasn't worth buying and I will not read Tangled or buy another of her books. As for characters, yes her world is interesting and the characters are good. But I don't see any development in the characters changing as they mature. Finn is still the same, he hasn't learned a thing, his beatings haven't changed his mindset and with his dad's passing, he is still drifting through life. He's in his 30's and all he's thinking about is his looks, clothes, car, and girls. He's had some life changing events. I don't see his character maturing through those events.
Ginn needs her elements trained, she needs to realize that and come to grips with the advice she's given - That if she doesn't get a handle on her power, it'll overcome her. So ok, great advice, lets see she takes it and gets on with her life and stop thinking of her past and background data that should be just that, left in the past.

Gin is still officially retired from her trade however she hasn't stopped flexing her assassin skills. She's on a mission to end Mab Monroe, the woman who killed her mother and sister years ago. But Gin is ever loyal to her friends and family and when she finds out that Mab's right hand man, giant Elliot Slater is stalking her vampire friend Roslyn, she sets out to put an end to his reign of terror. She's also got Jonah McAllister, Mab Monroe's personal attorney breathing down her neck and maybe even trying to break it. He suspects Gin had some kind of involvement in his son's murder, which she did.
Gin kicks ass, and takes names like no other urban fantasy heroine earning her a spot on my all time favorite heroines list. In Venom, we learn even more about her past through flash backs and thus begin to discover who the real Gin Blanco of today really is. Although Gin thinks of herself as a cold blooded killer, she is so much more. She is an intriguing character that can be counted on to do right by those she loves no matter what it takes.
Speaking of love, Gin's love life has taken an interesting turn. Owen Grayson is a much bigger part of Gin's life now and he is determined to win her over. Gin has to decide if she should continue pining over the upstanding Detective Caine that is everything she thinks she is not, or should she take a chance on Owen who not only wants her, but seems to get her as well. That fact that Owen is charming and super sexy doesn't hurt his case at all.
All of the secondary characters we've come to know from the previous books are present within this story but it seems that as time goes on Gin's friends are becoming more like extended family to her. Now a new upstanding Detective has hit town and it's Bria, the baby sister who Gin once thought perished along with her mother and older sister. Gin will have to keep Bria safe and in the dark about her true identity until she comes to terms with this new turn of events and decides just how to handle this new discovery. There relationship will be interesting since they are on opposite sides of the law.
While I enjoy the colorful cast of characters in this series, one secondary stands out above the rest and I just can't get enough of him. Finnegan Lane is a womanizing, sort of sleazy but not really, kind of guy that adds a special flavor to this series. Jennifer Estep really has a knack for creating characters that by all intents and purposes should be despicable but I just can't help but love.
Venom, like the previous books in the series is action packed, violent, and is a genuinely kick ass read. But Jennifer Estep really kicks it up a notch and out does herself with this installment in her Elemental Assassin series. This is definitely a page turner and the ending will leave you itching for more.

The Good: The action in Venom is so great! Besides the over all villain, Mab Monroe, we get a new assassin on the block and she is awful! More secrets and mysteries reveled and we get a lot of Owen! YAY!
The Bad: The only complaint I have is the same as in Web of Lies, the repetition got a bit annoying =/
The Romance: TEAM OWEN all the way!

The Story
Gin Blanco retired as the assassin Spider several months ago. Her good heart keeps sucking her back into special cases. She is the owner of the Pork Pit. She requested a special favor from Rosalyn Philips in the second novel that caused her to have a violent stalker. The stalker is none other than Elliot Slater, Mab Monroe's head of security. Mab Monroe killed Gin's mother and sister and tortured Gin. Gin recently found out her sister is alive and is a new cop into Ashland. Gin tries to protect Rosalyn and Bria throughout the book and trying not to get dead. Owen Grayson has more to him than has met the eye in previous books. He is there for Gin, she just has to let go and trust him.
Thoughts
This third installment is more violent and more killing. In some aspects it was more, but in the emotional department it was less to me than previous books. I did enjoy reading this and I'll definitely read Tangled Threads (Elemental Assassin, Book 4), the next in the series. I felt emotion lacking in this book, the only emotion that really came across to me was Rosalyn's desperation. There isn't enough balance of good vs evil. There is a lot of negativity, darkness and despair in this book. Also what I missed was the creative sandwiches Gin would make. I look forward to that and she only made one meal at the end, but that isn't a deal breaker. I really like the Owen aspect! They are perfect for each other, I'm excited to see where that is going. The pace of the book didn't really pick up till the second half. There are +'s and -`s but all in all I was entertained.

Your friendly neighborhood assassin, Gin Blanco, is back in the Elemental Assassin's third installment, Venom. Blanco, equals Bada$$. Coolige, also equals Bada$$. But Jennifer Estep is definitely the biggest Bada$$ of them all, and Oh what tangled webs she writes. Venom proves Spider's Bite and Web of Lies was only the start of good things to come. With the set up and well established characters of Gin, her cohorts, and the world that is Ashland, firmly behind her, Estep confidently starts her descent into the point of no return. Before the end, lines will be drawn. Decisions will be made. And war will begin.
In typical Estep fashion Venom starts off with a bang.... Or a fist in the face. Picking up where Web of Lies left off, paybacks a b!t@h, that Mab's minions are taking out on Gin's body. Getting jumped by a gang of giants lead by Elliot Slater, and Jonah McAllister, sets the tone for the difficult battle ahead. And it won't be easy with the new straight laced Detective Coolidge on Gin's back. In this episode Gin's case, is eliminating a stalking, serial murdering, rapist, with an eye for a certain madame. This will be her hardest mark yet, and Gin's not sure she will walk away from it alive. Compounding matters, he also happens to be at the top of Mab Monroe's inner circle, and getting this job done will be like declaring war. But Venom isn't just about present problems and relationships, there is also a healthy dose of the past. In this installment, Estep works in Gin's memories of the fateful fire that changed her life. We even find out why her family was targeted, along with learning more about Grayson's troubled past, and how Sophia does such a good job at cleaning up after Gin.
With the abrupt departure of Donovan Caine, Gin is questioning her head and heart. The always confident assassin, is feeling quite self conscience about how new relationships will perceive her. Enter Owen Grayson, wealthy, sexy, quite possibly the most understanding man in the world, but Gin's weary heart is worried about his motives, and wether he'll be there in the morning when he finds out who and what she really is. Then there's baby sis Bria, who has moved back to Ashland, but Gin's not the only one who recognizes Bria. Life's just not fair for Gin, who's struggling with how to break the news to long lost little sis about who she is and what she does, while juggling to keep Bria alive and kill her mark. But it's all in a day's work for the barbecue betty.
With luck abandoning her, Gin can't seem to catch a break. Retirement is becoming more of a full time hobby, and the assassin Spider, a murdering philanthropist, donating her skills to the less fortunate. Fortunately for us Estep is donating her writing skills to the masses. Venom's strong story line, action packed drama, and well written characters will keep you hooked. The few answers given will satisfy. And the new threads created will string you along for the next book.

Oh Jennifer Estep; You created a series that I can't stand to read, but I'm so engrossed in the story I can't help but plug through it.
I need to echo the other reviewers that have already mentioned the repetitiveness of the writing.
I swear everytime I saw it come up, I said to myself, "If I see her call The Pork Pit 'my gin joint' one more time, I am going to scream, and stop reading!"
Yes, we get it. Her name is Gin. Reference to her name in gin joint.
Ditto for "get dead" (ie, it's a sure way to get dead). We know she kills people. We know there are people out to get her. We know someone is going to "get dead" one way or another.
Great storyline, but for the love of Gin's gin joint, approach a more capable editor.

Venom is the third book in the Elemental Assassin series by Jennifer Estep and the book, along with our heroine Gin, kicks so much ass- literally and figuratively! This book is raw, funny and packed with action- I devoured it, could not put it down.
Gin is everything I want in an assassin. She is hilarious, cold hearted yet vulnerable, gritty and this woman has the most amazing, unique elemental powers. Personally, I'm always hot, so being able to create ice from my palms would be the coolest (no pun intended) thing ever! Oh, and she does a great job at killing those that deserve it. I'm almost done raving about my favorite assassin. Almost.
All of the entertaining secondary characters have returned- Finn, Owen, Jo-Jo, Sophia. All of the characters have incredible depth and pragmatic personalities that suit Gin and her adopted family. I was not a fan of Donovan Kaine, so I was thrilled seeing Donovan scram and Owen Grayson potentially take his place. I'm waiting on pins and needles for Tangled Threads to see if Mab finally falls from her throne and if Gin and Owen take their relationship to new heights. Obviously, I'm a biiiiig Owen fan- I can't even explain my fascination with him.
The book is written smoothly, beautifully and the plot is compelling- the action scenes being my personal favorite. Gin has a witty, brilliant voice- absolutely to die for. And if you're a fan of Urban Fantasy, READ THIS SERIES! You won't regret it.
Almost.

**Possible spoilers if you haven't read the first 2 books**
Gin Blanco is trying her best to stay as a retired assassin. But unfortunately bad news follows her, mainly because of the turn of events in Web of Lies, where she ended up snuffing out the son of a very dangerous man, Jonah McAllister, who is also the lawyer for one of Ashland's most powerful elementals, Mab Monroe. Venom starts where Gin has the flu and is suffering from a bad cold. She's attacked by Jonah and some of his thugs because he thinks she knows something about his son's death. Gin puts on the scared act and is beaten within an inch of her life. Mab puts a stop to it. Mab, Jonah and his goons all think Gin is some weak, pathetic loser. And because of that Mab has no idea what Gin is capable of and will be taken down. Gin wants to kill Mab, who was responsible for murdering her parents, almost killing her when she was a barely a teen, and up to most recently thought her younger sister Bria had been dead all these years. The biggest surprise in store for Gin is that Bria is alive and has moved to Ashland to take over the role of detective, the one Gin's sometime lover, Detective Donovan Caine had recently vacated.
Gin's attack doesn't weaken her resolve. She's fixed up by two very powerful dwarfs who are skilled in healing, and has the support of Finn Lane. Finn's father Fletcher took Gin in and taught her to be an assassin. Years later he was tortured and killed. Gin also wants revenge for Fletcher's murder because she thinks Mab may also had something to do with it. Gin and her crew carefully plan a way to bring down Mab, but Bria is sniffing around. And because of that, Bria is marked for death. Now Gin has to protect Bria, while keeping her true identity a secret, as well as lend aid to an old lover of Finn's, a vampire, who is being stalked by one of Mab's psychotic goons.
And, if that's not bad enough, or perhaps in Gin's case, a very good thing, the mysterious, rich Owen Grayson, who first appeared in Web of Lied (Gin saved his sister), wants to know Gin better. He too has a past much like Gin's that bonds them. And because of that, Gin may have found not only someone who understands her, but a lover who won't judge her like Donovan did every time they were together.
Venom is another wonderful installment of Jennifer Estep's Elemental Assassin series. Gin makes no excuses about ending the lives of those who cause pain and suffering to innocent people. She's much like Robin Hood, but instead of stealing from the rich to give to the poor, she's a vigilante who is the judge and jury when it comes to the sort of punishment she dishes out. Gin also prefers to use weapons, knives being her weapon of choice, rather than her own elemental powers, and only if she has no other choice left.
What I also find amazing about Gin is her devotion to her friends, who are essentially her family. Her brother Finn, in everything but blood, is a smooth character who hides a very resourceful nature. Just as Gin puts on certain act for the world, Finn does also. And I have a good feeling that because Finn adores Gin, he's close to feeling the same for Bria, but in more physical terms. And speaking of physical, Owen is a worthy partner and lover for Gin. He's definitely not a rebound from Gin's disastrous relationship with Donovan. I can't wait to see what Jennifer has in store for these two, and if and when Donovan will return at some point.
Kick-ass balls to the walls action is what I think when it comes to Gin Blanco and this series. Venom may just have your adrenaline running where by the end you'll be panting for the next book.

Gin Blanco, a.k.a. "The Spider," was officially retired. She spent her time running The Pork Pit and attending classes at the local college. She should have known her mundane life wouldn't last long. Elliot Slater and a couple of his goons, along with Jonah McAllister showed up on campus and kicked the crap out of her. Jonah had been searching for the woman responsible for his son's death. Gin took the beating in order to secure her identity, not to mention she was sporting a cold and wasn't feeling up to par. Good thing, as Mab Monroe, thier boss and Gin's nemesis appeared out of the shadows. She stopped the beating, believing Gin was nothing more than a mundane female, but with influential friends. Then to top of her evening, the detective who took Donovan's position was none other than her long lost baby sister, Bria.
While Gin contemplated revealing who she was to her sister, the world continued to get smaller. Apparently, Elliot Slater had been stalking Rosyln, a madam vampire and friend. Gin refused to sit by and let it happen. It just so happened, Elliot was a target on her list in advenging her family. With the help of the dwarf sisters, Sophia and Jo-Jo, her best friend Finn, and Rosylnn, Gin declares war on Mab.
Buh bye Donavan and Helllllo Owen! I am so glad that Gin had met someone, who could love and accept her for who she was. Owen saw into her heart and understood, some of the things she did was a necessary evil for the greater good. She didn't take joy in the act, but the safety of the innocent. He saw the hero in her. It was something Donavan was never able to do. He had still lived in a black and white world wearing those rose colored glasses of his. Finn was more charming in this book and I found myself wondering if Finn might end up having a little "something something" with Bria in the future...because I could have sworn there was some sparks. It was fun to learn more about the Dwarf sisters, although I am still not sure why Mab fears them. Eva and Violet make a small appearence, it was nice to see that they were happy. I still haven't figured out Bria. She seemed eager in finding her sister, but there was something off about it. I can't explain it. It was as if, she was having some kind of inner struggle that hadn't yet been revealed.
Overall, I loved this book! The world the author created, was not only crediable, but filled with dark and edgy situations that made it seem realistic, yet made me wonder about all the possiblities. The characters continued to grow giving them not only depth and substance, but personality, which I felt made the characters more interesting and engaging. Jennifer Estep has entered the Urban Fantasy world fast and furious and has remained consistant throughout each book in the series, filling each book with memorable characters, action, intrigue, and wonder. Venom was every bit as amazing, as the previous books in the series, Spider's Bite and Web Of Lies. I finished the book completely satisfied and finding myself anxiously anticipating the next installment, Tangled Threads.

*CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR SPIDER'S BITE AND WEB OF LIES!!!
I honestly don't even know where to begin with this book. I have been completely hooked with this series from the beginning and Venom not only lived up to, but exceeded my expectations. It is by far, my favorite of the series to date. Like Spider's Bite and Web of Lies, Venom is a completely engrossing story that reaches out and sucks you into it's world immediately.
Once again, we have an extremely colorful (yet gritty) cast of characters. Gin is as kick ass as ever and although she is retired from the biz, she still hands out plenty of butt whoopings. She has a lot of character growth in this book and she is better able to reach out to those around her. Gin is now at the point in her life where she starts to really evaluate what is important to her and she wants to be sure to protect those around her.
We are also graced with the wonderful Finn; Gin's foster brother. Finn is easily one of my favorite characters and I love the banter that goes between the twosome. They are truly like brother and sister and his protective streak shows up a few times in within Venom. However, fear not, it is still the same old Finn. He is as just as conceded and hilarious in this book. Finn is more of a central character in this book, especially now that Donovan is gone - he gets more shall we say, screen time.
Another character that is back for a repeat appearance is the ever-charming Owen Grayson. Let me just say this; good riddance Caine - don't let the door hit you on the way out. I am simply ecstatic that Gin has a new love interest, Donovan was just not doing it for me. He was just a great big party pooper - always bringing Gin down. So she was an assassin... she saved his butt many a times, if I remember correctly. Still, he was all, "I can't do this... you are a bad person.." blah, blah, blah.
Owen, on the other hand, is totally into Gin. He finds her interesting and full of life. Most importantly, he isn't ashamed of his attraction for her. Donovan was constantly struggling with his attraction to her - talk about a turn off.
We are introduced to a new character in this book - Bria; Gin's long lost younger sister. Interestingly enough Bria is how a detective working in Ashland. In fact, she took over Donovan's spot once he ran for the hills. Ironic, no? Bria is a hardass, just like her big sister - but she is also a straight arrow. This provides a lot of inner turmoil for Gin. She is proud of Bria, but she is afraid to let her know who she is, because she may reject her. After all, Gin isn't exactly a savory character.
But that is what I love so much about her as a character. I adore Gin. She is an exceptional character - she is seedy, aggressive and often terrifying, yet you find yourself rooting for her. You never really stop to consider, "this chick is an assassin; she is KILLING people", you just cheer her on and start scoping out her new victim. This to me is one of the things that makes this series so remarkable. Estep is able to create a character, who makes a living committing the worst crime imaginable; yet she is completely likable. Kudos to Jennifer!
Once again, the story is bursting with action, deception and romance. The excitement practically oozes off the pages and you develop this need to read on. It becomes absolutely necessary to discover what is going to happen.
Without giving too much away, I want to say that the ending was topnotch. It was heart pounding, thrilling and terrifying at the same time. I cannot wait to see where the story goes next, I can only hope it contains more Owen, Bria and, of course, Finn.
If you are a fan of Urban Fantasy, you should definitely pick up this series. Even if you don't read Urban Fantasy books, you should still read it. In fact, Spider's Bite, the first book in the Elemental Assassin series, was my first ever Urban Fantasy book. I loved it so much, I dove head first into the genre. So, listen to what I am saying, go pick up a copy today!

As usual Jennifer Estep opens to chapter one in the thick of it, no holds barred. Venom is Jennifer Estep's Elemental Assassin series part three. If you missed book one and two, Spider's Bite and Web of Lies, respectively, you will be able to play catch up with Venom. Jennifer Estep repeatedly goes over material from the last two books a little too often for my taste, but that's just me.
Venom opens to Gin Blanco the retired assassin, yeah right on the retired part, to getting her body rearranged by Eliot Slater, minion giant of Mab Monroe, Gin's old nemesis and friendly family murderer. After one of our fav secondary charcters Jo-Jo Deveraux heals Gin with Jo-Jo's talent of Air Elemental power, Gin's step-brother Finn Lane connives Gin into helping his sometime girlfriend Roselyn get rid of Eliot Slater for good. Trust me there is no love lost between Gin and Eliot, but his stalking and torture of Roselyn is as good a reason as any to slice and dice him. Which Gin Blanco does very well indeed. At least Owen Grayson is back in the picture with a promise of a full-time relationship in the future, and a sexy future it looks like. She finally confesses all to Owen who accepts her for who Gin really is, unlike that awful Donovan Caine. Obviously we are all happy he is long gone. Then baby sis Bria Coolidge is on scene and involves herself full time with trying to save Roselyn. Gin balances saving everyone again in Venom. Bria is targeted by Mab Monroe and has given Eliot Slater the assignment. While Gin complains nothing ever goes right for her, she manages to do just that and then some. This book ends with Gin finally giving Mab Monroe a spider rune warning saying, "I'm coming to kill you honey, sit tight".
Jennifer Estep keeps us on the edge of our chairs till the book ends, or we fall over, which ever comes first. You will not be able to put Venom down. The first two books were very good, but Venom is so much better. Much more action as well as watching Gin grow into a woman who can accept and trust a man, and proving that Gin Blanco can be a very good assassin and a very good friend too. She has rounded out Gin in this book, loving sis, great friend and accepting of a family in her life. Jennifer has taken a broken woman and has made her whole. I highly recommend Venom and the entire Elemental Assassin series, you can't go wrong with a little spider once in a while.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this fantasy thriller. Estep has created a quirky set of characters that blend and contrast wonderfully well while keeping you smiling and wanting more. I'm a big assassin thriller fan, and Estep takes the usual killer for hire theme and spins it with fun and fantasy making me wish there were such things as elementals in our world. Highly recommend getting lost in her series - you will become attached and wishing the characters were real people.

Gin Blanco is still retired, and running the Pork Pit. Also dealing with the broken heart left behind by the fickle Donovan Caine. Foster brother, Finn, takes her out to the club owned by his on again off again vampire girlfriend, Roslyn. Gin is expecting a night on the town, but what she gets is a front row seat view of Roslyn's stalker, Elliot, in action. Gin is wracked with guilt knowing she is the reason Roslyn ever crossed Elliot's radar. Gin decides it is up to her to take him out, and save Roslyn from the crazy giant. This won't be easy because Elliot is one of powerful Mab Monroe's henchman. Lucky for Roslyn, Gin enjoys a challenge. Gin is also dealing with the arrival of her long lost baby sister. Retirement has turned out not to be as boring as the former assassin expected.
Verdict? Loved it! This is a series that just keeps getting better and better. I adore Gin even with all her faults. She is a chick you just can't help but love. Plus what is better than an assassin who bakes to relieve stress. I was also so happy to see the frustrating Donovan Caine take a hike. I have good feelings about new love interest, Owen, but admit I still long for a Gin and Finn hookup. With that said, I admit the chemistry between Owen and Gin is good stuff.
Gin's close friends played an even bigger role in Venom, and we get a few interesting tidbits of information about their pasts. This series features a fantastic cast of well developed and interesting characters. I love how well they fit together to complete an intricate, and well paced plot. This is Urban Fantasy done right.
Venom was non-stop action. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time I was reading. The ending was superb, and I can't wait for the next installment of this series. A must read for anyone looking for a kick ass Urban Fantasy series.

Review by Patrice Stanton
I see by all the titles Jennifer Estep has in print that she's made-the-bigtime (Estep-pun intended) as a writer for sure. But at what cost, I ask you...
I picked up "Venom" and found the annoying problems other reviewers have already mentioned: repeating easily-remembered details ad nauseum; the "heroine's" failure to use and conscious choice NOT to use her magic to protect herself. This last is the "epic-fail" of the story & leads to a major problem I have with the author herself: in my opinion Jennifer Estep is a MISOGYNIST.
Yes, you read right. The author writes like a woman-hater. She, Estep, writes (if she really is writing these `Gin-stories' and not just fronting for some sicko-guy) like the stereotypical feminist claim's - stereotypically - how all men `really' feel about `powerful women': that they need to be beat down to a bloody, broken pulp. The novel for all intents and purposes opens with it's first of at least two excessively violent beating of `Gin' whom the author portrays as her series heroine. I skimmed through the middle looking for some redemption but found none so skimmed on and found the second `heroine-pulping' near the end of the book where our thoroughly modern super-magic gal `Gin' was STILL unwilling to use her secret powers to save herself pain and injury!
What will teen girls learn from this kind of `heroine'? To shut-up-and-take-it? (Then run to the nearest healing-dwarf-girl who'll make it all better!) What kind of `grown women' could identify with or enjoy following the `adventures' of this kind of female character? What kind of readers will sit through two or three or four novels of the same or similar repetitive, sadistic, near-death violence-against-supposed-super-magic-woman PORN (because porn is what you really ought to call it) and keep `going back for more'? Gluttons for perverse punishment I guess. Count me out.

This story is very entertaining, full of deception and action. Characters are well developed and are interesting and engaging. If you enjoy fantasy stories this is one is perfect for you. I highly recommend this book.

I really like these books. The story is fresh and original as are the characters. The only thing that bothers me is that things are repeated over and over again. I can see maybe repeating something from a previous book so that someone who didn't read them will know what's going on. I don't see why she repeats something over and over in the same book.

THE PLOT: Gin comes out of retirement to save someone from a bad guy and in the end she kills him.
Well...the story is really not that simple.
1- Gin finds she has more friends/family than she thought.
2- Gin has a big guilt complex.
3- We meet Bria and find she is more like Gin than you would have thought.
4- Gin has to learn to open her heart and let others in.
5- Who was Fletcher really, and will we ever get to really know him?
This time I really thought Gin was going to met her match, but knew since she had more books she wouldn't, but still it was really close. For me she has really fleshed out to a real person...She is still hung up on Caine (who still doesn't think of the one who got away). She still does believe she has done something worthwhile (don't we all have self doubts). She is still feeling guilty for things she had done (The death of Bria even though she didn't die, Roslyn's trouble, etc. And aren't we all that way?) She also puts everyone first but herself, including worrying about them getting hurt but not caring if she does. But what I like best about this series is that Gin mostly does things without magic.
How does the ante increase you ask, well because now Gin has come out of the closet and threw down the gauntlet and challenged Mab. Now that takes guts!!!

Please RateBook 3), Venom (Elemental Assassin
I instantly liked Bria. She’s no nonsense, but willing to do whatever it takes to protect the innocent. I know it’s hard for Gin to see her, but I think she does a pretty good job on keeping things from getting too personal.
I freaking love Owen. He’s smart and knows how to get under Gin’s skin. Sometimes in a bad way, but mostly in a good way. He’s almost a perfect fit into her world, and doesn’t look at her like she’s an awful person for what she decides to do.
The only thing that bugs me is the repetitiveness from the previous books. And sometimes even the events that happened in this book.
