Quick & Dirty: A wonderful fourth book that introduces new elements to make the story even more thrilling than it set out to be.

Opening Sentence: "I have a confession to make."

The Review:

When I was asked to read Jennifer Estep's fourth book in the Mythos Academy, Crimson Frost, I was excited. I have heard great things about the series. So what did I do? I went back from book one and started at the beginning. I wanted to know the whole world that Estep created. She promised mythology and wonder, and let me tell you, boy did she.

Life has taken a shape of normalcy for Gwen, as normal as things can be. As Nike's champion, Gwen is a primary target for the Reapers and Loki's champion, Vivian. But while she somewhat felt safe within the protection of Mythos Academy, a new threat is revealed, the Protectorate. The judge and jury of their world, the Protectorate has accused Gwen of helping Loki escape as well as the fact that she's a Reaper. And the person who is leading the charges and accusations is Linus Quinn, Logan's father.

Gwen has grown so much since the beginning. She's more certain of herself, her powers, and of her own ability to stand up on her own. Gwen still has her own insecurities, but with the amount of pressure she has (defeat the Reapers and Loki), I think it's justified. She tries her best, which is what anyone can ask for, and I love how Estep has kept her flaws. Gwen has a realistic voice of a teenager trying to stay afloat in a world she was thrown in, and that is the best part about her character.

Estep's supporting characters aren't just in the background. Throughout the Mythos Academy stories, each character has grown in a way that is unique on their own. Their voices are strong, and each has a connection that is different from the others. Whether it's Daphne's feminine strength or Logan's gallant behaviors, Gwen is lucky to be surrounded by such a wonderful cast.

I was lucky enough to read the books back-to-back. I was able to appreciate how well the story and character progressed within each story. Crimson Frost is a little more established with its own world and setting, so I think Estep took risks. And these risks were well worth taking. There was a darker theme throughout the story, mostly inevitable since the end of the story is looming over our heads. There is more danger and doom, but rightfully so. The story of good versus evil is gaining in momentum, and I love the force that Estep brings it. Each moment was riveting and had me at the edge of my seat.

Specifically, in Crimson Frost, Estep has taken us around the familiar surroundings of Mythos Academy. But what differs in this book than the others is the tone of the school itself. It's a lot darker, a lot stricter, and I'm sure Gwen is feeling it. With the accusations, she is watched more carefully. It's an interesting double take on the school, and I really enjoyed it.

Estep is a talented author, telling us her version of mythology. Her world is filled with fantasy, but set in a realistic setting that often seems like it is a part of the reader's world. I highly recommend that you read Crimson Frost.

FTC Advisory: Jennifer Estep provided me with a copy of Crimson Frost. No goody bags, sponsorships, "material connections," or bribes were exchanged for my review.

I have to say these Mythos Academy covers keep getting fiercer and fiercer, and I am SO DOWN with that. Which is why I ask myself what's up with the fifth book? *flinches* Awkward chest and knife angle... NEW COVER MODEL... weird hairstyle... WHAT HAPPENED? But, I guess we'll save my bafflement for when I actually read the next book.

You know, I wasn't in any particular rush to get my hands on this book. You can attribute my requesting it to my Netgalley-happy fingers and a mild need for the next part of the story. Truthfully, when I was excitedly devouring this book, it was in hopes that this would be the last book. Gwen's story feels just a tiny bit unnecessarily drawn out and I was eager to get movin'. As you might've already deduced, that is NOT what happened here. I can't tell you if that adds to my half-disappointed half-satisfied reaction to Crimson Frost by Jennifer Estep.

Ok, So What Had Happened Was: Gwen Frost found out her true purpose at Mythos Academy, making her feel worth something and a little less self-pitying. She's made--claps for Gwen--a nice little swatch of friends who are all happy to support, defend, and hang with her. But now, there's an enemy on the loose and his evil henchmen are sure making life difficult for our unremarkable heroine. Especially since she's been accused of setting him free. Will Gwen and her friends manage to prove her innocence? Will she be able to save the day once more?

Not gonna lie: it would seem as this series gets longer and longer, I get more and more bored with all the side characters. Crimson Frost by Jennifer Estep didn't make anything better. When I said Gwen was unremarkable, I kind of meant in a GOOD WAY. She's just your average high school student with the uncanny ability to witness events and experience emotions at a touch. She's self-deprecating, brave, sarcastic, and, though the peeps at the Academy have given her NO REASON to be, kind. While she may not be the most adventurous protagonist in existence, she's definitely a decent chick, you know, considering. It's pretty easy to flow and mesh with her narration. As for everyone else? Her friends are like the dull wallpaper in your grandma's kitchen--expected and warrants a passing glance. Except Vic the DTD (that's Deadly Talking Dagger). He's just too talkative and gungho about killing living things to be anything but the 30inch flat screen with surround sound in the living room. I'm just so OVER the nerdy band geek friend, the cocky SOBing love interest with a KILLA grin, and the menacing BFF who shoots sparks out of her hands. It even seemed like I could feed the villains their lines and cue their echoing cackles. Toss a new atypical someone at me, Estep.

To hammer home why I keep reading the series, I MUST discuss the plot--it's FUN. Pure, undiluted fun, riddled with danger, battle, robe-wearing psychos who like to steal things and tote the complimentary torches for the evil dude, Greek god cameos, and mythology research. It's a MYSTERY with action and deadly consequences and the overarching goal of MUST DEFEAT THE GUY. It's all very intense and pageturnable when you're reading it, trust me.

Am I in a big rush to get Midnight Frost? Personally, I wish this series finished back in book three. That's not to say I won't MIND reading more; I'm just not desperate. These characters don't make me itchy to steal the fifth book off the presses. If you're looking for a fun way to pass the time, though, this series is a stack of guilty pleasure that is quick to hack through.

I requested this title from K-Teen via Netgalley.

NOTE: I received this book from Netgalley to review.

Firstly, I would like to say that I requested Crimson Frost before I even started reading this series. So then I decided it was about time I gave it a chance. But, as some of you may remember, and if not, just check out my review of Touch of Frost, the very first book flunked my expectations. I was too disappointed to even express my feelings properly.

So, naturally, I decided that I should just abandon all attempts on the Mythos Academy.

And yet!

And yet, when I saw Crimson Frost on my Netgalley shelf, I thought: "Why the heck not?" I mean, even if it was bad, it couldn't be worse than book one, right?

Truth is, that I was surprised in two exactly opposite ways.

On the positive side were several things:

1. It turned out that skipping the two books in between didn't affect my understanding of the events so far. So yay! I was up to date with no reason to go back and read books 2 and 3.

2. The story had actually progressed nicely over a span of several months, and I saw that finally, after three whole books, Logan and Gwen were on their first date. Wow!

Unfortunately there were negative sides too:

1. The descriptions were too long, to the infinitesimal detail, which wasn't interesting to me, so I found myself skipping over them most of the time. Because, honestly, I remembered quite well from the first book what the Library of Antiquities looked like (and other places too). There was no need to describe every small detail every time Gwen entered the place. After the second time around it just got boring. I don't know about other readers, but I'm certain I don't need to be reminded where each shelf and case and statue stood. Besides, that's quite irrelevant to the story.

2. The author's research on the Bogatyr warriors wasn't accurate. They weren't Russian warriors, as she said they were. They were Slavic and Mongolian knights, who fought while horseback riding. No two swords and whatever else Alexei was supposed to be fighting with. You may wonder why I'm even mentioning this, but I hate it when an author includes half true info about things that exist in the world. I mean, either do it all the way, or don't do it at all.

About the characters, here's what I have to say:

*Gwen* has grown into a slightly more bearable person. She was quite annoying in the first book, but I see that she's progressed. She isn't completely dependable on others and stuff. However, she's still lacking some sense of logic.

*Logan* is still this freaking super warrior, but he's also quite messed up on the inside. He seems to be quite strong, and yet unable to deal with guilt even when he's been forgiven for things he wasn't accountable for anyway.

*Alexei* I guess was nice and all that. I did totally want to smack him on the head when he didn't bother to defend Gwen, but oh well, he had his orders and such.

Anyway, with all that said, I still think the novel was good enough. I don't think I'd be reading on though.

In the fourth installment of the Mythos Academy series, the plot is finally progressing in the right direction... again. With the previous installments not always feeling as if they are on the same story line, the series, thus far, has felt a little all over the place. But not any more!
Crimson Frost picks where Dark Frost left off, which both thrilled and surprised me. Gwen was dealt a heavy hand in Dark Frost. And in Crimson Frost, readers are seeing Gwen having to face consequences that she never imagined. But to make matters worse, the one leading the charge against Gwen is her crush and possible boyfriend's Dad, Linus Quinn.

It is true that I adore this series. But, if I am being honest, I was expecting Crimson Frost to be a disappointment. By this point, with three previous books in the series, Mythos Academy series and its characters have gone through a lot. However, the central plot line has never really felt solid. Until now.

For two books in a row, the plot has really started to come together. All I have ever wanted from this series is to live up to its potential. And I feel like we are finally getting somewhere. Gwen really develops in Crimson Frost. I loved seeing her continue to grow, to become strong. I just wish that I had gotten to see more growth from our secondary characters this time around as well. Daphne, Logan, and the gang are still present, but Crimson Frost was very centered around Gwen. Even the revelations about Logan felt tied back to Gwen.

Final Verdict:
Crimson Frost, in a lot of ways, was the make it or break it book for this series for me. I honestly adore this series, but with the plot line still feeling a little stuck, I needed some encouragement to show me that I am right by sticking with it. Crimson Frost was not perfect for showing a great amount of plot development; however, at least, I feel like it was on the right track. If the next installment, Midnight Frost, can keep with this momentum, this series could be unstoppable.

If you have read the previous books in this incredible series, you know that Gwen was tricked into freeing Loki (the big baddie) by Loki's very own champion. Because of this, Gwen is facing the fallout that this has had on Mythos Academy and is arrested by the Protectorate. Gwen is put on trial and is quarantined to the school until she is either found guilty or not guilty. This makes it a little difficult to prove her innocence but with her faithful allies including her love interest Logan, maybe she stands of chance. The biggest obstacle in their relationship this time around is that Logan's dad is the leader of the Protectorate and is NOT a fan of Gwen and her gypsy heritage. He also truly believes that she is not Nike's Champion. Gwen starts to fear that the Protectorate has been infiltrated and is not so sure she has a chance at a fair trial.

Just another great addition to an already amazing adventure. Gwen and Logan of course seem to always have something that gets in the way of the growing relationship (getting arrested on your first date can put a damper on things). I liked how this time we got to learn a little more about Logan so if you are a super fan of Logan, this one is for you! Another great aspect is we are seeing more of the world that Estep has created. The Protectorate is first introduced and we witness the inner workings of their so called "judicial system." There is also the characters that we have grown to love such as Metis, Nickamedes and Gwen's grandmother and a few new ones, including my new favorite, Alexei.

Estep as always, throws the twists and turns that as a faithful reader, have come to love. If you haven't tried this series yet and you love YA urban fantasy, then I highly suggest you start with the first book Touch of Frost (books should be read in order). For me, I will have to wait patiently for the next book in this series, Midnight Frost, due out in July.

Despite the major blow dealt to Gwen Frost when Loki was released, she was hoping to steal a few moments of normalcy and go on a date with Logan Quinn. However that just wasn't in the cards as the date turned disastrous when Logan's father, the head of the Protectorate charges Gwen with the crime of setting Loki free and promptly arrests her. It's kind of hard to enjoy a date when one of the pair gets thrown in jail. Even worse, it seems everyone has already decided her guilt and tries to take matters into their own hands. Innocent or not, this gypsy girl may not live to see her own trial.

I have to be honest that I wasn't exactly thrilled about the plot of this book at first. I mean there's more than enough going on with the reaper/Loki business that I just didn't think Gwen being put on trial by the supposed "good guys" was the best direction for the story. Much to my surprise, it took no time at all for me to forget about that annoyance and get sucked into the whirlwind of a story. Perhaps a lot of that has to do with the fact that the reaper stuff never faded to the background, but only added to the threat from the trial. I'm just glad the whole book wasn't just about persecuting Gwen, because honestly the poor girl is probably the last person in the world who deserves that kind of treatment. I am still amazed at her ability to stand strong no matter the odds against her. This especially held true in this installment when everyone who was supposed to be on her side turn terribly against her. Truly an admirable character.

One of my biggest pet peeves with this series has to do with the relationship between Logan and Gwen. In the beginning of it there was a whole lot of teen angst going on, and then once that died down, the relationship barely moved at a snail's pace. So, I was really looking forward to seeing them finally get some time as a real couple in this book. Of course that quickly went out the window since Gwen was arrested in the first chapter. Being guarded 24/7 doesn't really allow for any romance. However, that being said, I could see some real progress between them, which made me really happy. But in true Jennifer Estep style, that happiness was quickly snatched away once Logan made a rather bad decision that will really change things. Without getting into any real details about this, I have to say that I'm incredibly disappointed in him. I may understand his reasons, but that doesn't make it the right decision in my book. Hopefully the boy will redeem himself in the next book, as I've simply lost my faith in him and would really like to see it restored since he really is a great character. I know that was really vague, but I just felt the need to vent a little even if no one understands what I'm talking about until after they read the book.

As I read back over this review, I'm feel like I've been in rant mode, which is funny because I actually really enjoyed Crimson Frost. Everything flowed well and there was plenty of action. I was rather sucked in the whole time, so I really cannot fault the book for my frustrations at the obstacles that were thrown in Gwen's path both physically and emotionally. If things came easy, then the book wouldn't be very entertaining now would it. I guess I'm just a little too attached to Gwen, therefore making me rather outraged on her behalf. So, rants aside, Crimson Frost was a solid installment in the Mythos Academy series that is sure to please fans. I know I'll be waiting rather impatiently for the next installment set to release in August of 2013.

Crimson Frost is the fourth instalment to the Mythos Academy series by Jennifer Estep. I don't know why but for some reason, I find myself comparing this series to a slide, it started way up high but is somehow slipping from okay and way down. The first book, Touch of Frost was incredibly epic to me because it was new to my point of experience when it comes to incorporating mythology to a story. It was great. But then came Kiss of Frost which was pretty good, but just didn't top the excitement I felt for the first book. When Dark Frost came out, things just went from good to bleh! It kind of lost its spark. But I had high hopes for this series so I went on and tried out Crimson Frost. Much to my dismay it still didn't get high off the charts. But it was probably more bearable than the third book yet still not as satisfying as the first.

Gwen Frost once again comes back to Mythos and is finally, officially dating Logan. You think this girl could use the break from that entire stressful mythological world she's in, but no. That wouldn't make her the ever strong and tested protagonist that she's supposed to be, would it? Right at the beginning she faces another kind of battle for her life. She ends up getting arrested by the Protectorate (police force of the mythos-world), which I refuse to feel that they are the right form of justice to any world considering they condemned Gwen guilty with only one measly witness (and a fraud at that) against her when they could question an entire group of students for whatever testament needed to be taken in for investigation.

As much as I didn't really find myself liking Gwen here, I felt sorry for her. I'm not sure if I was just in one of my mood swings (the I'm-too-emotional-I'm-crying-about-every-little-thing kind of mood) that I found myself shedding tears every time the people around her picked on her, or maybe it just really bugs me when someone is being bullied. I'd say both.

I don't buy the idea about Logan regarding the Reapers and Loki's plans (you'll get what I'm saying if you read the book). Honestly, there are a lot of elements to consider over the "qualifications". Heck, Gwen could be an even better choice bearing in mind what she's capable of, right?

I don't understand the villains in this book. Seriously, why would you tell the hero the one thing that could stop your ploy??? And to our dear hero: how about trying to get the thing that controls the mind off of the person first before thinking that the only solution is to kill them? I mean, there's such a word as common sense after all... Another thing I don't understand is why every student from Mythos cowering in corners on the utmost time they're supposed to take their trainings into consideration? Hello? Isn't that moment what all they've been working their asses off for? And you consider yourselves "warriors"? Really? I find that hard to believe.

I know, I have so much complains about this book, but I've given this a lot of thought. I really liked the action in the ending, despite the lack of logic from the characters. I was also touched about Gwen's major sacrifice just so she could save everyone, especially Logan. The ending was a little sad but I know there's more to be seen about that. Honestly, this would have been better if only Estep took off some of the (in Gwen's words) "frou-frou" going on.

Crimson Frost starts with a real bang when Gwen's long awaited date with Spartan Logan Quinn ends in her arrest by the Mythos Protectorate headed up by none other than Logan's father Linus Quinn. Accused of intentionally freeing Loki from the prison realm that the other gods had trapped him in centuries ago, Gwen's very public arrest means that until her trial every Mythos student who has lost a friend or family member to the Reapers is now determined to make Gwen's even more difficult.

There's a real build up of tension in this instalment. Gwen finds herself with a double threat hanging over her from the students who are out to get her and the possibility that she may actually be executed for conspiring with the Reapers. Not only that, Gwen knows that with all attention focused on her and the trial that the real villain Loki's champion Vivian is still out there with a free rein to create even more mayhem. Although it seems like an impossible task it's up to Gwen and her loyal group of friends to prove her innocence.

With action galore (I especially loved Grandma Frost's acting skills), double crossing, drama and a bit of a who dunnit mystery with a potential Reaper spy in the Protectorate, Crimson Frost has a bit of everything in it. With Gwen's magic constantly evolving and the impending chaos war literally just around the corner I'm eager now to see the final showdown. Although I still don't see Gwen as a typical all conquering heroine (which is exactly what I like about her as a character) she has developed dramatically from her initial days at Mythos Academy. Like Gwen herself, I want to know what the Goddess Nike sees in Gwen to make her such a worthy champion. So bring on the final battle please Ms Estep!

I've been cheering for Gwen and Logan to get together from the first book but it seems that for Gwen the course of true love never will run smooth. And that ending???? Arrrgghhh you NEED to read it, it's a real killer and makes me even more impatient for the next instalment Midnight Frost.

Crimson Frost by Jennifer Estep
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

GENRE: YA Fantasy
THEME: Myths/Romance
RECEIVED: Author

REVIEW:
Jennifer Estep really knows how to make her readers get emotionally attached to her characters. Crimson Frost not only continues with Gwen’s quest to stop the evil Loki, but emotionally hit my two favorite leads with some intense and heart pounding scenes leading me to read this book in one sitting.

Crimson Frost once again follows Gwen Frost in the middle of a battle, but this time its for her life and innocents. She has been accused of releasing Loki and working with the Reapers, the charges are being lead by none other than Logan’s father. Everyone thinks she’s guilty beside her friends and teachers that witnessed what happened. But reapers are behind Gwen’s trial and Loki is closer to getting what he wants.

Gwen, I swear this girl needs a major vacation and asap! She pretty much goes through hell and back in this book, fighting for her life and pretty much no one can help her. Logan’s father is down right hateful of her and won’t listen to his son’s plea that she’s innocent. Though every book she gets stronger and is really starting to stand on her own, she always seems to get wrong end of the sword. I wish I could give her some luck, but her friends Daphne and Carson are there by her side fighting with her. Plus Logan, her Spartan and boyfriend will do anything to protect her. I pretty much felt frustrated with how Gwen was being treated, it was hard to read how much my favorite character was suffering and really falling apart. She was able to use her gypsy gifts to help her find the truth behind the trial and find the reapers, I hope she continues using her abilities more and more. But Estep known’s how to strengthen her characters after loosing so much and being brought back from hitting the bottom.

Logan, as always this Spartan steals my heart just like he does with Gwen. I feel this book emotionally was hard on his character. He not only has to deal with his past but the harshness of his father who is a lead warrior and accusing his own girlfriend for Loki’s return. Logan and Gwen pretty much keep each other from falling apart, they are each other’s rocks and Estep challenges that and then some. The ending was a tough for me as the reader but I love his character and how he is with Gwen, I can’t wait to see how they get through this next challenge.

Daphne and Carson are not only Gwen’s best friends but I feel they are going to be super important to taking down Loki. No matter what, they stick by Gwen’s side and battle the reapers, defending her against all the student who are bulling her thought out the story. Plus they add a little humor in between all the battles and Gwen trying to find out the truth.

Alexei is a new character and is assigned to keep an eye on Gwen while the trial is going on. He also has a soft spot for Gwen’s friend Oliver, which I felt softened up his super serious attitude. I liked Alexei as a new addition to the team, while following Gwen around he gets to see what she really goes through and that she really is Nike’s Champion. I look forward to seeing how he works with Gwen and the team to take down Loki.

Overall this was the best book by far in the series, I feel the battles are getting tougher, the powers are getting stronger and Gwen is even more ready to stop Loki. The characters are developing more and more, growing up with each challenge that’s thrown at them. After the somewhat of a little cliffhanger I’m so ready for the next installment and can’t wait for Gwen to kick some serious butt with her trusty sword Vic.

RECOMMENDATION:
This is a young adult novel with heavy focus on Greek Mythology. Fans of the House of Night Series and Vampire Academy series will love the teen angst and supernatural elements in Dark Frost by Jennifer Estep.

This is probably one of my favorite installments in the Mythos Academy series. I don't know if it's my favorite, but its one of the top! This book was filled with tons of action. Tons :) Not much romance in this book, but the action made up for it. So many elements happened in this book that left my mind spinning.

The writing style of Jennifer Estep really draws you in. My eyes were glues to the pages of the book and I had to force myself to put it down. The words and sentences flow together with ease, which is a major plus for me. Now, on to the characters. Our dear Gwen just always finds herself in heaps of trouble. Now in this case, we can honestly say that she didn't do what they are accusing her of doing. I felt so bad for her, being that she is always fighting for her life against the reapers and now being accused of helping them. And those reapers were so relentless in this book. I was 'whoa' they just don't give up and are so persistent. And Logan, things were going so well until that ending. I don't know what to expect in book 5, book I can't wait!

Like I said before, there was tons of action in this book. Page after page of amazingness, which I don't even believe amazingness is a word, but it was just that awesome! I adore this series and it has definitely become a favorite of mine. And who can resist Gwen's lovely attitude. That sarcasm of hers...I love it! I definitely recommend this series if you like warrior-ish type of books. You know, like sword fighting and things like that. It also has a little bit of gods/goddesses in it and a little bit of magic. And all that equals awesome.

Thanks so much to netgalley for providing me with an eARC of Crimson Frost. All thoughts are my honest opinion.

Crimson Frost is the fourth installment in Estep's Mythos Academy series and continues the series' trend of fun characters and fast paced plots. In this one we see our main character, Gypsy Gwen, charged with being a Reaper and purposely freeing the evil god Loki from his prison. Gwen is a good heroine, although sometimes her brash choices annoy me. Her Gypsy ability of psychometry, which she can use to see an object's or person's history, is a pretty darn cool ability and I always love any scene where we get to see her use it.

Throughout the book the plot bounces back and forth between Gwen dealing with the Protectorate, the team that will preside over her trial, and Gwen up to her old antics trying to solve the mystery of who the real Reapers are. In typical Mythos Academy fashion, Gwen is the only smart person who attends the school and therefore must be the one to unravel the mysteries and stop another Loki plot to start his Chaos War. There were many disheartening scenes where Gwen's classmates treated her awfully because they believed her to be a Reaper and those scenes added a little more to the plot to make readers understand how unforgiving the mythological community would be to anyone involved with Loki.

All of the side characters are great, including popular girl turned Gwen's BFF Daphne and her band geek boyfriend Carson, school slut and mean girl turned friendly acquaintance Morgan, new addition Alexei, heartwarming Grandma Frost, and Logan freaking Quinn. Logan and Gwen's relationship continues developing in this book, hindered slightly by the fact that his dad is the one leading the trial against her and is completely convinced that she is guilty, but things move slightly forward nonetheless.

This is a fun and breezy read and, while some plot points are completely predictable, Crimson Frost has plenty of heart behind it to make it worthwhile.

Recommended for fans of: mythology, Covenant series by Jennifer L. Armentrout, Starcrossed series by Josephine Angelini, fast paced YA reads, and Logan freaking Quinn.

Fourth in the Mythos Academy urban fantasy series for young adults involving Gwen Frost, Nike's Champion.

Be sure to read Gwen's letter to Logan at the back of the book...

My Take
I like this series. Yes, it's a bit clichéd with its underdog protagonist, but I do like the twist Estep puts on Gwen as both unacknowledged champion and underdog. It shocked me to realize this is only the fourth in the series as I feel so much a part of Gwen and her friends. As though I've been reading about them forever. And I mean that in a good way. It's a tribute to how well the author has pulled me in to the storyline.

That said, I am disappointed with this installment. It feels as though Estep let logic out the window in favor of illogical melodramatic tension. What??? They can't figure out a way to prove who is whose champion? Give. Me. A. Break. And I just cannot get over the fact that the Protectorate is completely ignoring signed witness statements. No. No. No. It's no wonder they're all afraid of the Reapers if the good guys are this stupid.

There was no sense of justice being sought. What was with Raven and her attitude? Vivian's claims should have been easy enough to disprove. Why were the other Protectorate agents going along with how Linus handled things? The way in which he exposed Gwen so early while "claiming" that investigations were ongoing? I can only assume "innocent before being proved guilty" is not a part of Pantheon law.

All of Linus' actions---heck, all his words, no matter how he words them---indicate that he's already tried and sentenced his victim. Without ever speaking to her. Or, obviously, anyone else. God forbid he should believe his own son.

The quote that starts there are none so blind...certainly applies to the Protectorate. A caution to not allow one's prejudice to influence what one sees. For great loss would not have occurred, if not for this blindness.

I just don't get it. It makes no sense. The entire process is just so wrong. Arghhh!!!

On the plus side...Logan is so sweet on their first date. And I do love how Logan jumps right in there, as do Gwen's friends.

The Story
Blind prejudice sets a series of catastrophic events in motion.

As Gwen says: "I should have known that my first official date with Logan Quinn was destined to end in disaster. If we'd gotten into a swordfight or been ambushed by Reapers, I'd have been more prepared. But getting arrested mid-sip at the local coffee hangout? I didn't see that one coming. I've been accused of purposely helping the Reapers free Loki from his prison---and the person leading the charge against me is Linus Quinn, Logan's dad. the worst part is that pretty much everyone at Mythos Academy thinks I'm guilty. If I'm going to get out of this mess alive, I'll have to do it myself..."

The Characters
Gwen Frost is Nike's Champion with the power of psychometry, the magic of touch; she carries a magic sword named Vic, and is a student at Mythos Academy. And she's Logan's Gypsy girl. Nyx is Nott's newborn cub which Gwen is caring for in her dorm at school. Grandma Frost is a former Nike champion and can see into the future.

Logan Quinn is a Spartan and fellow student, who finally came clean with his deep, dark secret. Oliver Hector and Kenzie Tanaka are fellow Spartans and Logan's best friends. The one difference is that Oliver is gay, and while secretly in love with Kenzie, has found a new romance. Kenzie is dating Talia Pizarro, an the store.

Daphne Cruz is a Valkyrie with newly discovered healing power, Gwen's best friend, and carries Sigyn's onyx bow and single arrow. She and Carson Callahan, a Celtic band geek who uses the Horn of Roland, are still together. Morgan McDougall, a Valkyrie, appears to be on Gwen's side as well along with Talia.

The teachers at Mythos Academy
Nickamedes, the head librarian at the Library of Antiquities at the school, is Logan's uncle, Gwen's tough and touchy boss, and Gwen's mother's best friend until they fought. He, along with Professor Aurora Metes (wisdom), who was her mom's best friend, Coach Ajax, and Raven, who sells coffee at the library, make up Mythos Academy's security council.

Helena Paxton is a bitchy the store student---the new mean-girl---who will stop at nothing to hurt Gwen.

The Protectorate
The Protectorate is the police force for the mythological world.
Linus Quinn is the head of the Protectorate and Logan's dad. Never satisfied with his son. Agrona is Logan's stepmother and Linus' right hand in the Protectorate and on the academy board. Sergei Sokolov, a Bogatyr, and Inari Sato, a ninja, are fellow agents. Alexei Sokolov is Sergei's son, and a Bogatyr as well, and has been pulled in to play Gwen's guard while they investigate her.

Reapers of Chaos are the followers of Loki, the Norse god of mischief and chaos. Gwen was compelled to free him in Dark Frost (Mythos Academy, #3).

Vivian Holler was the student in Dark Frost (Mythos Academy, #3), who turned out to be Loki's Champion and forced Gwen to free him. Lucretia is Vivian's sword and an old enemy of Vic's.

Mythos Academy is a boarding school for the children of the Pantheon. Vikings, Valkyrie, the stores, Romans, ninjas, Bogatyrs, all the mythological warriors of the world send their children to Mythos and other similar schools to learn about their world and how to protect it and themselves against their enemies. Nike is the Greek goddess of victory.

The Cover
The cover has a softness to it. All browns and pinks with a softly determined, violet-eyed Gwen staring out at us wearing the snowflake necklace given her by Logan, and one of the gryphon statues that helped her, standing a fearsome guard behind her left shoulder.

The title is the blood drawn, physically and metaphysically from young Gwen, the Crimson Frost that will see her life change dramatically.

In this fourth installment in the Mythos Academy Series we once again accompany Gwen Frost into the world at Mythos Academy. If you aren't familiar with the series, Mythos Academy is a boarding school and college for the descendants of ancient warriors like Spartans, Valkyries, Romans, Vikings, Bogatyrs, and other magically gifted people, such as Gwen Frost, who is a Gypsy. Basically, it is a school for warrior whiz kids. Mythos Academy is located in North Carolina, Cypress Mountain to be exact, high above the city of Asheville. The story is highly rooted in Greek Mythology with a modern day twist. Gwen Frost is the main character, and as stated above, she is a Gypsy. Gypsies are those who have been gifted with magic by the gods. Gwen has been chosen by the Greek goddess, Nike, who is the goddess of victory, and Nike is where Gwen's magic comes from. Gwen has the gift of psychometry magic, the ability to know an object's history just by touching it. Gwen is also Nike's Champion. A Champion is the one who a god or goddess chooses in the mortal realm to represent them, and act on their behalf. Gwen's mom and grandmother were Nike's Champions before her. As Nike's Champion, Gwen has been chosen to battle the Reapers, who serve the evil god Loki.
In the previous installment, the evil god Loki, who is the Norse god of chaos, had been freed, and Gwen finds herself being blamed for what happened. After finally getting the guy she has crushed on forever, Logan Quinn, she now she finds herself unjustly accused of this heinous crime. What is even worse is that everyone believes she did it, all but a few of her closest friends, who know the real truth. With the help of Logan, her friends, some of her trusted instructors at the school, and eventually the new student who is assigned to protect her, they embark upon the quest to find out the truth behind what is going on and try to clear Gwen's name, which isn't an easy task, especially when you have a whole evil army against you.

Crimson Frost is filled with excitement, mystery, Greek mythology, kick-butt battle scenes, and yes, it even has some romance. Gwen's love interest, Logan Quinn, is a Spartan, and Spartans happen to be the fiercest of the warriors, and believe me, Logan is one hot warrior. I was impressed with the way he stood up and fought for Gwen, especially since her main accuser is his father. We also get to find out what is going on with all of Gwen's old friends, and get to know Alexei, The Bogatyr who is her guard, and who also becomes a good friend to her. The book is jam-packed with action. There are some intense battles with the Reapers, and even Gwen's arch nemesis. There are twists and turns at ever corner that keep you guessing, and just when you think you have it figured out, the author takes you somewhere you weren't expecting. I loved the story line, the pace was fast and kept your attention from beginning to end, and the characters are great. I loved them, and I even loved to hate the evil ones. The ending is intense, and leaves you looking forward to the next book in the series, which I can't wait to read. If you love Greek mythology and YA urban fantasy with some romance mixed in, then you are in for a treat with Crimson Frost.

I read the last book Dark Frost and was excited when I was sent the fourth book in this series, Crimson Frost. First off, the covers for this series are very cool and definitely make you want to read them. In this book, Gwen is accused of killing a bunch of people, but she is innocent. However, nobody believes her and everyone at school is bullying her. Even her protector, Alexei, is standing around letting it happen. Logan, her Spartan boyfriend, seems to be the only who cares, besides the grumpy librarian, Nickamedes, who wrote the report saying Gwen was innocent.
"'I have a name,' I snapped. `It's Gwen, Gwen Frost. Obviously, you know it since you announces it to the whole coffee shop.'"
There is so much action in this book with Gwen, Logan, Oliver, and Daphne back in action, using their special gifts to save Gwen from being blamed for something she didn't do. This book was so exciting with constant action and drama that it was hard to stop reading. It's hard to not like Gwen and feel sorry for her at the same time. Finally, anyone who can talk to statues and have them respond back is pretty cool.

*******Spoilers for previous books in the Mythos Academy series*****Do not read if you haven't read the others********

I've had some lukewarm reactions to previous Mythos Academy books, the first two, to be honest. The repetitions of what happened in the first book I got tired of. And the repetitions are still in this book but I've learned when they are coming and skip right over them. Only because I know what they are saying. Probably because the books are meant to be able to be stand alones, but you'd do a disservice to yourself if you didn't read the books in order. They build on each story, the mysteries, the romantic tension, the threat of the Reapers. The books, to me, get deeper and richer as they go. By book three, Dark Frost, I am a total convert to this series and stayed up really late into Christmas Eve to finish it so I could start this one. Now I am waiting with baited breath for it's sequel! This series could go on forever and I'd be happy!

As it says in the summary the worst has happened and Gwen was there. But if you've read the books you know she did everything she could to stop if from happening. However, on her first real date with Logan, she is arrested by none other than Logan's father, a member of the Protectorate, a group she's never even heard of and what they do to her is unspeakable! It is really bad.

And things only get worse. The whole book is filled with Gwen trying to prove her innocence with her friends supporting her. She only has a few days to figure out what her arch nemesis is up to and to foil her plans, the Reapers plans. But she really seems like she might be over her head in this one. I'd never count the ever resourceful Gwen out, despite her rather extreme tactics to save her friends and defeat the Reapers. But there is a little heartbreak at the end. It doesn't spoil the ending. Grandma Frost knows how to heal the heart with yummy desserts and heaps of love. But Gwen may not heal from this broken heart right away.

This is the strongest novel in the series so far and I highly recommend the series for all lovers of mythologies of all kinds. Gwen is a gypsy but her boyfriend is a Spartan, her best friend is a Valkyrie and the God let loose is a Norse God-Loki. So it's an incredibly well told story with a mix of adults and students battling the bad guys using their special skills that vary greatly. There's a bit of romance, lots of mystery, battles, betrayals, loyal friendships. Read the series!!

"Crimson Frost" by Jennifer Estep is part of her wonderful young adult fantasy series featuring the Mythos Academy, a very different educational institution located in North Carolina. I always admire the author's facility to juxtapose normal teen concerns with the arcane occurrences that accompany life when one is Nike's Champion interacting with very active gods and goddesses. I enjoyed the introduction to the other important people in Logan's life and the subtle inclusion of elements from the author's exciting adult paranormal series featuring Gin Blanco. The sweet romances that are developing between the various classmates provide a warm backdrop for the exciting fight scenes and other unexpected developments in Gwen's life. The author always deftly weaves an impressive world that is believable even though it is peopled with mythological beings engaged in a frighteningly realistic struggle for power. The intense combat scenes are combined with unexpected developments to make this an emotional read that will keep the reader enthralled until the last heart-wrenching and exciting page. This book can be read as a stand alone but is better enjoyed if one has read the rest of the series but be forewarned, once you start, the story is difficult to set aside so make sure you have plenty of time to savor these delightful tales. It is always frustrating to reach the end of the book because I am anxious to read more about the fascinating life of this remarkable teen and her friends. I can't wait to read the sequel, "Midnight Frost", although it looks like I will have to wait until next summer!

Gwendolyn (Gwen) Frost is not a typical teen. Very few teens have their own Fenrir wolf pup, a sentient sword named Vic or the gift of psychometry which allows them to obtain information just by touching objects. Nor have they inadvertently released the god Loki and made it just a bit easier for Reapers to destroy society but is that any reason that she should be ostracized by her entire school? Then, there's her flourishing romance with the Spartan, Logan Quinn...which never seems destined to go smoothly. Oh well, some teens' lives are a little more complicated than others but the fate of the world does not usually rest upon their actions. Fortunately, Gwen has a few allies on her side, including the goddess who has chosen her as Champion. Hopefully, her heart and her life will survive the struggle against the agents who promote chaos.

This is the fourth book in the Mythos Academy series. The fifth book will be titled, Midnight Frost, and is scheduled for an August 2013 release. I believe Estep is contracted for 6 books in this series. I really enjoyed this addition to the series. The book starts a bit slow, but really gained momentum by the end.

Gwen is accused of helping the Reapers by the Protectorate. She is forced to go on trial to defend against these allegations. Her friends know that the charges are bogus, but the Protectorate is certain that she is the one who freed Loki. Strangely enough the statues around campus seem to be on Gwen's side.

This was a very good installment in this series, although not the best of the series. Right away Gwen is accused by the Protectorate of being a Reaper and releasing Loki. She spends a good portion of the book being bullied, ostracized, and basically just made to feel totally awful. As a result in the first half of the book there is very little action and a lot of Gwen trying to figure out how to clear her name.

The second half of the book is non-stop action and impossible to put down. This book really put Gwen through a lot; she's already gone through so much that my heart just broke for her in this book. The best thing is that now she has her friends and Logan to support and back her up.

Gwen does grow as a character. She's learned to contain her temper and work through her problems. She acts very maturely throughout the book, at times I thought she was a bit too compassionate and forgiving given what she is being forced to go through. I enjoyed watching her learn more about her powers and watching her accept the support and love of those around her.

We see a lot more of Vic in this book, he is the most awesome talking sword ever. We also see all of the Gwen's steadfast friends, although they are in the background for this book. There is a new addition to the cast of characters in a love interest for Oliver/guard for Gwen. He made a great addition to the series as well.

I continue to enjoy how mythology is woven into this world. Mythology really comes to the forefront with Loki free and Gwen continuing as Nike's champion. We delve deeper into mythology in this book than in any other in the series and I really loved it.

The book ends at a bit of a cliffhanger and I am dying to know what will happen in the next book.

Overall this is a very well written installment in the series. The characters are excellent and we delve deeper than ever into the mythology that makes up Gwen's world. My only complaint is that the pace of the first half of this book was slower than other books in the series. The book was still engaging and hard to put down. I can't wait to see what happens in Midnight Frost. This whole series is highly recommended to fans of urban fantasy, especially fans of YA urban fantasy.

I was a few pages into Crimson Frost and realized that as I owned First Frost and Touch of Frost (Mythos Academy), it would be smarter to read these first. In pursuit of the Mythos Academy story,I jumped online and obtained Kiss of Frost (Mythos Academy) and Dark Frost (Mythos Academy), and settled in for a two day marathon to come up to speed.
I'm glad I did because I just don't think I would have appreciated Gwen 'gypsy girl' and the Crimson Frost episode as much without having the back story. Maybe like me, future fellow readers will also zip online and beg, borrow or buy the previous titles.
Just a long hand way of saying I am really glad I started the life of Gwen from the beginning and that I definitely enjoyed this series!
Crimson Frost maintains the integrity of the previous books where Gwen, the flawed, feisty yet sensitive lead character, chooses her destiny despite the odds. She gains new friends at Mythos Academy, (a school for students from mythological warrior casts including Spartans and Valkyries).
The students at Mythos are wealthy and indulged for reasons Gwen occasionally comments upon. Gwen's magical gift is that of psychometry, of touching people and objects and knowing their full story, a mostly harrowing experience. Of course she is at odds with the hierarchy, various groups of fellow students, and is mostly always blamed for problems not of her doing. Gwen and her friends including the lovely Logan brutally clash with the reapers of the god Loki in this age old fight of good against evil. But the unassuming Champion of Nike battles through at great personal cost balanced by friendship and love. The girl without friends wins them the hard way. I enjoy the backchat that happens between her and her sword Vic, her relationships and her commentaries on the staff and students of Mythos. Her more insightful comments on the meaning and use of 'free will' give an added depth to her personality. This series is a marvelous read. Crimson Frost certainly continues the tradition. And yes I cried too!

I have now joined the plethora of fans waiting for Midnight Frost to be released.

I adore this series. It has a witty, feisty heroine, a brooding loveable hero and secondary characters that have become close book friends. The characters have matured throughout the series, and I love how they merge with new characters to make a solid formidable team against the bad guys. Mythos Academy is one of those places that just comes alive and becomes a secondary character. It's one school that I wish I had gone to!

Aside from the first book, this one is probably my favorite of the series. Gwen faces some major trouble, and past events come back to haunt her. I loved that she had to face what happened in past books. Everything she did was in good faith, but not everyone sees it that way. I love how Gwen's friends stand by her, and that not everyone in the school thought that she was innocent. She had a super hard time dealing with everyone but her friends being against her, even though she new she wasn't exactly the most popular girl before everything that happened in this book did.

There were some twists and turns in this book that I didn't see coming though I should have and the ending had me wanting the next book now! It's rare that the fourth book in a series is still as good as the first one, but this one This series has lots of action, romance, unforgettable characters and endings that make you wonder how on earth Gwen will get through things. I so can't wait for the next book!!! (book was provided by the author for a fair and honest review.)

Wow. Crimson Frost is my favorite book in the series, so far. This novel is action-packed and full of romance and nonstop suspense. I could not put it down! Gwen grew a ton as a character over the arc of this story, and some new characters (and mythological types) were introduced. This is one book that will not disappoint!

Gwen was fantastic in this book. The poor girl can't catch a break, and this time she's facing the death penalty. Thankfully, she was much smarter in this book than she was the last one. She really stood on her own and took care of herself (and everyone else) in this installment. I really like how her character is progressing, and I can't wait to see how much stronger she gets in the next book. Logan was super sweet in this novel. I now love him even more, if that's possible. Daphne, Carson, Oliver, Grandma Frost, Vic, Metis, Nickamedes, and Coach Ajaxx were also great additions to the story, as usual. I also really liked the new characters we got introduced to... even the bad guys. They were interesting. No cookie-cutter characters from Estep, that's for sure.

Crimson Frost was fast-paced, but nothing felt rushed. The plot was extremely intense. The problems started within the first few pages and continued until the end of the novel. Some of the issues were solved during the course of the book, but others got added. It didn't really end on a cliffhanger, but the ending left an opening for Midnight Frost, which comes out in August of 2013 (I can't wait!). I would go into more detail here, but I don't want to spoil it for anyone. Let me just say that you will not be able to put this book down.

Overall, I'd recommend this series to anyone who loves YA mythology-inspired/supernatural books. For those of you who have already read the previous books in the series, you cannot miss this novel. It's the best one yet. I, personally, can't wait to see what Gwen and co. get into next.

The Mythos Academy Series is one of my favorites. I just know picking it up that I will get something action packed, full of mystery, humor and just some really fabulous characters that I have come to love over the course of the series.

And of course this latest book is no different. I love that as soon as I pick up a new installment I feel like I am going back to visit some old friends that I have really missed seeing and talking to. I love being immersed in Gwen's world.

Just when I think this series couldn't get better Jennifer proves me wrong. This book was by far the best yet. I have a hard time putting them all down but this one, especially, made it not just hard but down right painful to put down.

I love all the Logan Gwen time we get even though there is so much happening in Gwen's life right now. I love how Logan stands up for her and how he really starts to show his feelings to her. If I didn't already like him from the previous books, this one would have clinched the deal. The Spartan is definitely swoon worthy but in a total kick butt kind of way.

Sometimes it seems like the motives of the bad guy and what is going on is totally predictable and then Jennifer will throw in a new twist and you are back at square one trying to figure it all out. There is a lot going on in this with Loki and Vivian free and out for revenge and there is a lot more at stake than ever before.

I love the direction the series is headed. I love how much Gwen has grown. I love her fierceness and her goodness. I love that only only Gwen but all the characters are growing, even Grandma Frost. I loved seeing her jump into the battle and have Gwen's back. She is one tough cookie!

Really this whole series is just fantastic and I absolutely can not wait for the next book. With some things ending like they did, I want more. I want to see more of everyone, but especially of a certain fierce kick butt Spartan.

Oh, how happy I was while reading this book...but it didn't last! I've been reading this series since it was first published and waiting for the main characters, Gwen and Logan, to get together and it finally happened..sort of.

Gwen has been an interesting character from the very first book. As she matures and grows more and more comfortable with her role as Nike's Champion, I find myself rooting for her to the point that I'm tense when she's involved in a fight and I hurt when she hurts. The world building that Estep has created in so rich in details and her writing draws you in from the first page. Besides characters that you really care about, the pacing of the books is perfect and never lags. There is always something going on, either solving mysteries or fighting battles.

Logan, hot spartan boy, defends Gwen when she is arrested, going so far as to rally her friends to protect her around the campus. I totally love Logan. He's still warring with his feelings regarding his mom and sister's death and his dad's indifference to him yet he never stops trying to be a better person. After waiting for him to make the moves on Gwen in the last three books, I felt the tenderness of their romance and it was sweet.

Then, I promptly had my heart ripped out which is exactly what the author intended. These characters are so loyal that they always do what is RIGHT to the hurting each other if it's required. Sigh.

Besides the main characters, Estep has also created secondary characters that you know and love such as Gwen's steadfast friends, her Grandmother, her talking sword, Vic, and a playful wolfpup, Nyx.

Warning: Mature references, fighting scenes

Interesting turn with the romance in the end, just my kind of book.
Also not too much romance, good fight scenes, as with the other books.
The developing character of Gwen, the MC, is believable, not too whiney and not too unsure, at least not the whole time, although she tends to struggle with her decisions - making her more humane in my eyes. She does not kill easily and is not easily killed, but if need be she does not shy away from self-sacrifice.
Highly recommended and for me the best yet in the series, which I will certainly read till it ends.

Review: "No matter what happens, I'll always come back to you."

"Promise?" I asked in a shaky voice.

Logan's eyes burned with icy determination. "Promise."

Woo! I think this quote gives you a good idea of the tone of this latest entry into the Mythos Academy series. Crimson Frost is the 4th book in Jennifer Estep's Mythos Academy series. This series takes place in a private academy where the students have special abilities within the Greek mythology realm. Gwen is a bit of an outcast with her gypsy powers and modest background. Many of the other students have benefited from parents with deep pockets. Gwen's boyfriend Logan has Spartan abilities which make him lethal in a fight. The story in Crimson Frost centers around Gwen being held on trial for acts committed in book 3. New characters are introduced like Logan's father and his military like squad. We also get a closer look into the purpose the goddess Nike has for champion, Gwen.

I previously read the first book in this series, Touch of Frost, earlier in 2012. I enjoyed the book but, got distracted by other books and never read much further into the series. Even if you haven't read any of the previous books, Crimson Frost is a great place to start in this series. The author does enough back story to catch the reader up but, doesn't get bogged down in it either. It's a great YA series with it's roots in mythology but, also has a very interesting dynamic group of characters. Even if you're on the fence about reading this series, I would recommend this book because it's just. that. good!

There is a pretty big cliff hanger at the end of this book so watch out! You'll be wanting the next book in the series Midnight Frost that much faster. No worries... it comes out in July this year!

I enjoyed reading about Gwen's job and could relate with her about working in a library. I also juggled school and a part time library job in college. Good times... :)

"What was it with people always trying to kill me in the library? Nickamedes so needed to put up warning signs. Danger: Working here could be hazardous to your health."

CRIMSON FROST is book 4 in the Mythos Academy series by one of my favorite Authors Jennifer Estep. Gwen has done a lot and come a long way from book 1 so I would definitely suggest starting the series from A TOUCH OF FROST so you can get the full effects of Gwen and the world in which she lives in.

The reapers are once again causing trouble for Gwen and her allies, they somehow convinced everyone that Gwen is Loki's champion and working for them and she is now under arrest and awaiting trial. Gwen continues to grow in her role as Nike's Champion. She has a way of figuring out just about every obstacle that is thrown at her even if its after trouble has gone on a little to long. She is always the first to fight for those she sees the need to protect and is very easy to relate to. Even with the troubles she faces in book 4 she is still fiercely worried about other. I continue to love all the characters in the series. Gwen's Grandma as always continues to surprise me and I enjoyed the addition of Alexei to the series. The love story that is Gwen and Quinn just cant seem to catch a break, it makes me sad and I'm not sure what could possibly happen to them next.

The ending left a lot open and a lot to consider for multiple characters. CRIMSON FROST was a great addition to the series and as always I'm excited to continue the story. Book 5 MIDNIGHT FROST is set to release in July 2013 and I will be one of the first to try and get my hands on it.

I absolutely LOVED this book! From book one I have loved this series, and it just keeps getting better and better!

Logan had me swooning from page one...I seriously LOVE that guy! He's gorgeous, very protective, and all around sweet! He's a bad boy and a total sweetheart all wrapped up in a gorgeous package! How can you not love him?

Gwen is awesome too...very smart and brave. She was able to handle the insane situation she was in. I mean, she's on trial because they think she set Loki free...on PURPOSE! Can you believe the absurdity?! Gwen's powers are amazing...growing and helping her out when she's in serious trouble (which is almost all the time lol). Seriously one of the best heroines ever!

The story itself had me hooked right from the start and all the way through! It was very, very action-y and had a lot of emotion...I love a book with emotion! It made me almost cry, made me laugh, swoon, and everything in between. The ending had me practically hyperventilating! It wasn't a cliffhanger, per se, but its just the events and everything that happened that makes me want to know what will happen next.

I was also glad to see new characters/new friends of Gwen. Especially toward the end when they kicked butt together! Yeah!

My final words: It was AMAZING! If you have not read this series yet, get to it ASAP!

I am extremely glad that I continued reading this series as it has only continued to get better! I admit when I first started reading this series I was not a fan, but I'm not the type to judge all books by their predecessors so I kept reading and this author made me a believer! These last two novels have been extremely well written and exciting. Even though Gwen isn't the best fighter she is still an amazing heroine who fearlessly takes on those who threaten her family and friends. There is a lot of drama as usual between Gwen and Logan which keeps the romantic aspect of the book interesting. This novel was full of turmoil and danger since Gwen finds herself being blamed for something she didn't do. It's interesting to see the way Gwen's friends react to her newfound situation, and not everyone is who they seem to be. The one thing I love about this novel is how it finds a way to incorporate different types of mythology into one story. It makes things more interesting instead of just focusing on one type. This novel builds into a climatic ending that left me hungry to see what happens next to Gwen and her friends. I definitely recommend reading this novel if you love mythology, magic, and action, but first check out the other three books in this series.

Finally, the author has allowed Gwen to show some growth, wisdom and maturity. I have B#$@!ed & moaned about authors of YA novels depicting their heroine as immature, overly implusive, nauseaingly preoccupied with teenage angst and sometimes down right stupid. However, this book exemplifies why this series is one of the few YA Series that I can stomach reading. Not only do we finally get to see Gwen mature a bit but she demonstrates some wisdom and intelligence.

Moreover, the action and suspense in this one is riveting. I can hardly wait to read Spartan Frost and Midnight Frost. Which I will be doing as soon as I finish this review. Buy it, Read it; Enjoy!

p.s. I still think that individually the books in the series, except the first on which is still .99, are quite overpriced. I think that 3.99 to 5.00 would be more equitable & appropriate especially considering the genre.

My Thoughts: I really like this series. Whenever its time to pick up the newest one, I always get excited. I love Gwen and how tough she is. I always love all of her friends. And Logan, oh sweet Logan.

We are back with Gwen and her friends and her complicated life. She has freed Loki and some people think she did it on purpose. Of course, we all know the truth.

But this doesn’t help Gwen. She gets arrested and put on trial. If she’s convicted she can be executed! Ick! And on top of that, one of the people in charge in Logan’s dad. Talk about awkward. Gwen and Logan just can’t get a break.

I loved the new character Alexie. Is that how you spell that? Well, he was a delight. At first I thought love triangle?? Uh no.. Was quite surprised by how that went down.

And on top of all this, Loki and his champion are trying to find a new body for Loki and the guy they picked, yep that made things even more complicated.

I don’t want to say too much about this one, if you haven’t read the series it will give too much away and if you have, I don’t want to ruin this one for you either.

I still love Mythos Academy. I love Gwen and Logan. Gwen has came a long way and grew up quite a bit. And Logan is just as yummy as ever. And the plot of this one was quite good. And the ending, now I need the next book in my life. Soon, Cindy, Soon!

If you haven’t started this series, please do it asap!

Overall: There is always something going on at Mythos! Always something lurking on the horizon and its up to Gwen to fix it. She has some of the worst luck, but hey she gets to hang out with Logan so its good, right?

Another addition to this series that I enjoyed! Will continue reading them!

Cover: Like it! I always like them!

Just when things seem to be going well with Logan, Gwen is arrested. The Protectorate are supposed to be their protectors from the evil Reapers, but instead they whole-heartedly believe Gwen is guilty. As frustrating as it is to see Gwen bullied by her classmates after the Protectorate announces her trial, it’s more confusing as to why she has been accused.

Fourth in the Mythos Academy series, this latest installment is an emotional roller coaster. Packed with danger, suspense, drama, sword-play, and magic – this series continues to impress and entertain. Crimson Frost is a fast-paced, thrilling adventure that I didn’t want to end. Climactic events lead to a mild cliffhanger ending that left me eager for the next in this amazing series. Thankfully, it looks like Gwen’s adventures have just begun.

Personally, I love it when Gwen trashes libraries and she gets to do that a lot in Crimson Frost. It's not really her fault. After all, denial and personal agendas are clouding the judgment of the Powers That Were, so much so that they focus all their attention on Gwen instead of on the Reapers. It's quite a metaphor for a lot of things happening in real life politics, and I think it's a valuable point of view to have in YA literature. Once Gwen is able to accept what is, rather than what should be, she is able to step up and set things right. Good ending that gave a sense of closure, yet left something open-ended so I was glad I had already pre-ordered the next book. Keep 'em coming, Jennifer!

Another great edition to the Mythos Academy series and probably the best one so far. What I like about this series is that they are always quick, fun reads, able to be devoured in a matter of hours. The content was slightly heavier, the stakes slightly higher but still it kept me engrossed from start to finish.

The story line was quite cleverly done and advanced the major plot crossing the books. I did pick a bit of it well before the conclusion but still found the conclusion a satisfying ending even if my heart had trouble with the cliff hanger at the end.

As usual, the characters were engaging and I liked the new characters that were introduced. We got to find out a little more about some of the peripheral characters which adds further depth to this already great series.

I am really enjoying this series and this instalment in particular. It's just a shame i now have to wait till August 2013 for the next instalment: Midnight Frost.

I give this 3 1/2 stars

Crimson Frost in the fourth book in the Mythos Academy series. Gwen Frost attended regular high school until her mother died and she was thrown into the magical world that is Mythos Academy. Isolated at first, she soon makes friends with Daphne, Carson, Oliver and Logan. At the beginning of this book, Gwen is on her first official date with Logan, the hot spartan, when the Protectorate enter the coffee shop and she's arrested for freeing Loki from prison.

For some reason, I found myself not enjoying Gwen's character in this book, and even Logan's presence couldn't seem to ignite this for me. Disappointly, having enjoyed the first three books in the series immensely, I was bored and had to force myself to continue.

We meet Logan's dad Linus, who is head of the Protectorate and Gwen's main accuser. He seems dead set on taking Gwen from Logan's life and won't listen to reason. He makes no secret of the fact that he isn't happy with Logan's choice of girlfriend.

Another new character, Alexei, is assigned to be Gwen's guard while she's awaiting trial. He takes his position very seriously, shadowing Gwen but not interacting with her at all, so we get to see very little of his personality, but from the little we do see at the end of the book, I think he'll be an enjoyable character in the future and I look forward to getting to know him better in the next book, Midnight Frost.

My main solace in this book came from the mystery of the reaper in the midst of the Protectorate. Other than this suspense keeping me going, I'm not sure I would have found it in me to continue.

I didn't find Gwen to be the brightest spark and in this one, and the last book, Dark Frost, I felt she did some stupid things. While I can't dis her bravery or how much she cares for her friends, she's starting to wear on me.

While this has been my least favourite of the Mythos books, the ending did provide some light at the end of the tunnel so I will still be picking up the next book in this series.

This series is enticing with it's mythological world. I found some of the things to be easy to predict such as who the Reaper Girl was in the last book and who Her inside man is in this book. It could be because I read a lot and watch shows based on finding who it is. Logan and Gwen kinda were thrown together in the first book with not much more than sarcasm and mural attraction. Finally they are getting together and... Then not so much. While it isn't unexpected from TEENAGERS I do expect more of a substantial relationship when they are together. So far there hasn't been much reason or moment between them. However I enjoyed the book and plot as well as the use of all mythology blended into one culture.

I'm really growing fond of these books despite some of their flaws. I like the increase in action that started with the last book and continues in this one. Some of the storyline in Crimson Frost was just annoying (Gwen on trial and everyone hates her) but she also got a little smarter which made up for the annoyances. Probably going to dive right in to the next one since I find these go quickly and are fun and entertaining.

The Mythos Academy series is one that capitalizes on the formula that made the Harry Potter books so successful. Take an orphan (a girl this time), reveal a magical heritage that is responsible for the death of her parent, ship her off to a magical boarding school, give her an inexplicably hostile teacher as well as a sage and cryptic headmaster, and make her integral to plot to return an evil power to the world. There are even Death Eater equivalents known as Reapers. As this series has progressed, the Potter similarities have become more and more transparent. But try as it might, Mythos Academy is no Harry Potter.

Initially, Gwen's touch magic and her ingenious way of using her ability to make a few bucks and solve a few mysteries was intriguing. But since the strong debut, the books have shifted further away from that Gwen to one who spends the entire beginning of the book degrading and criticizing every single thing about herself from her appearance, her shabby clothes, her personality, her intelligence, her physical capabilities, and on and on. After reading about what a worthless moron she claimed to be, it was hard not to agree with her.

As far as the actual plot goes, Gwen gets put on trial for her past `crimes' and ends up recounting all the major events from the series. It's basically the equivalent of a clip-show until the end. My overall enjoyment of the Mythos Academy series has declined steadily since the debut, but after CRIMSON FROST, I'm going to request a transfer to another school and take a pass on MIDNIGHT FROST when it releases in August 2013.

Series of books have 3 stages a beginning a middle and an end. The development of the characters in this book tell us we are in the beginning while the plot development tells us we are in the middle. Gwen is simply not developed enough for this stage in the book. I lay this issue at the authors feet. There needs to be more thought given into keeping the character in conflict without using poor plot devices like she has been. Oh well maybe it will get better.
