Mike Cernovich says there is useful advice in this book and I believe him because (a) Mike is trustworthy and (b) the author has clearly achieved amazing results (see book cover). The issue for me is that I am now about 20% into the book and have yet to read one actionable piece of advice that I didn't already know.
A book should be like a machine, with no unnecessary parts. The Reader should be enticed to read more with actionable guidance on every new page. This book, however, repeats itself, uses ALL CAPS and excessive exclamation points and generally does not treat every sentence as precious or give respect to the Reader's time. It is like an uncut gem, in dire need of a serious edit. I will get around to reading the rest of this book when I have the time but for now it's at the back of the queue.

A few good pieces of info where physical performance is concerned. A lot of this book is about physiological functions that most people don't know anything about, but for the serious trainer, could be good to know; definitely not novice-level material.
On the down-side, the author seems like the kinda guy who reads every one of these reviews so I'll sat this straight to him: hey man, you're a brain surgeon in good shape, but including shirt-off pix of you posing with your car and your sport bike makes you look like a YMCA shower-stalker...get it together, shorty.

Dr. Osborn makes several excellent points based upon solid scientific research but his approach to the solution to better health is to recommend taking several over the counter supplements and prescription medications that would have one taking more pills in a day than most elderly patients. I don't know about anyone else but my intent is to have good heath and not have to take pills.

Too blabby and wordy. This has good information in it but the blabbiness of it makes it a struggle to read. I wish he had put the information in bullet format and had less blabbiness. I gleaned a few good items from it but for the most part, it wasn't for me.

I was hoping this book would have some advice for anti-aging but its old hat and confusing. I appreciate his earnest attempt to publish good information about an anti-aging diet and supplementation but its information that has been out there for awhile by Dr Oz, Dr. Mercola, Dr. Weil, Ray Kurzweil etc. etc etc. The anti inflammatory diet is nothing new and his information is not as consisce as it should be (you're better off buying a real anti inflammatory diet book, like whole30, Aip protocol, Against all grain, etc) What was confusing was the "get off your ass" Hulkinator approach to weightlifting. I'm completely not dismissing the merits of strength training, however I don't think cardio, yoga, walking etc. should be dismissed. For example it was pointed out several times that the Japanese have better overall health due to diet but the Japanese do not weight lift (like he demands you do) in fact they have no "planned" form of exercise... they eat less than Americans and they walk everywhere. Additionally the book has no real exercise guide, it's a bunch of wordy paragraphs and a few crappy pixelated photos. Lastly I wasn't into the chapter on testosterone and hormones and by the looks of this guy he definitely is and it makes me think he's trying to hock them. Overall it's a half of a star and you're best looking elsewhere for better info.

Not easy to understand his big words or medical terms! It made the book frustrating and boring.I wasted my money for sure! And the exercises were too hard to even try at 64,even though it says his book is for any age!

Get Serious Book, first printed in 2014, and in order to write a professional review I had to reread it again, which was worth it and I’m glad to have this amazing book in my collections.
The Appearance:
I didn’t like the cover design, but this book has a great quality of paper and colorful printing.
Content:
In this book you will learn about the multitude of disease risk factors such as insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, obesity, hypertension (cumulatively known as Metabolic Syndrome), hormonal imbalance, and the role of chronic inflammation in the genesis of disease.
Dr. Osborn described aging as a desease and he says It is the disease of aging. You may be thinking, “aging is not a disease.” Well, if it’s not, why does this non-disease kill 100,000 people per day? that’s really interesting to me and maybe it’s new to you too but remember he’s Anti-Aging Medicine Doctor.
This book also included a lot of information about Cancers, DNA, and as he said: The goal of this book is to educate you the consumer, the patient, and allow you to assume care of your own health. but it has been writen with a lot of specefic and Medical Scientific vocabulary which made it difficualt to understand.
I also have learned about type 3 diabetes which is Alzheimer’s disease, and how to prevent diabetes. this book has 11 chapters and the chapter 8th which is about supplemets is the most informitive part as I’ve read other reader’s reviews in different websites.
Dr. Osborn’s Top Ten Nutritional Supplements: OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS, RESVERATROL, GREEN TEA EXTRACT, VITAMIN D3, CURCUMIN, B-COMPLEX, VITAMIN C, VITAMIN E, MAGNESIUM, PROBIOTICS, ASPIRIN, BETA-BLOCKER AND/OR ACE INHIBITOR, STATINS, METFORMIN. he explaines about the history behind each and dosage of supplemnts and the benefits of each of them.
there is money in disease not health.
IT’S ALL ABOUT TESTOSTERONE but how? which supplement?
Doctor Osborn in this book explains about many of daily problems that we all are dealing with, he wrote that one of the reasons that we cannot build muscle is low level of TESTOSTERONE. he explaines the natural way to increase your TESTOSTERONE is resistance training like: the five basic compound movements:
Squat, Bench press, Deadlift, Overhead press and a chin/pull-up or rowing movement.
one the hardest workout that probobly many of us are skipping, is squats and One of the greatest benefits of squat is increasing testosterone level in our body. Dr.Osborn explains each exercise with the correct way of performing.
He explains about TRT and HRT and how sugar is aging us: Consumption of refined sugars not only fosters the genesis of free radicals but also fuels the fire of inflammation. And chronic exposure to excess free radicals (oxidation) and inflammation causes agerelated disease, period.
Overal I personally give 4 star to this book but I still beleive if a book teaches me something new, it deserves 5 star review. I also wrote my review on the store, 3ee, Goodreads, LibraryThing and Social Medias such as: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Linkedin, Telegram and Google+.

Zig Ziglar always repeated two phrases, "you are what you put into your brain," and "you can have everything in life you want, if you will just help enough other people get what they want." Dr. Osborn gets it; he gets life, and he walks the talk. I wish you could meet him and stand and give him a bear hug like my son-in-law was able to, just nine short weeks after his eminent paralysis was avoided on Dr. Osborn's surgical table.
Over the last year, this book led Greg down a path of mindful total-body health and recovery from an incredibly rare lumbar disc and sciatic nerve root ailment. Now he is able to take long daily walks with my daughter and Grandson Levi. He has even begun minimal weight training when a year ago he could not lift his legs while laying in bed. God bless this man. I hope he blesses and encourages you through his wisdom, should you buy his book. I'm purchasing his book as a Christmas gift for another loved one.

I enjoy reading this straightforward book on getting serious about exercise. Dr. Osborn gives us reasons with back up on the importance of weight lifting exercise and keeping our bodies in top shape to live a quality life not just living. I have been exercising my whole life but I wouldn't say I'm super serious like Dr. Osborn, but after reading his book I have committed more of my workout time to weight training instead of cardio where I spent more of my time at. I am in my mid 40's and have found that I am suffering from some overuse injuries due to doing cardio. I have spent more time on free weights for the last month and have found that my muscles are getting challenged more and I feel stronger, it has gotten me out of the exercise rut I was in. I love that the doctor is up front and back to the basics, working major muscle groups and healthy eating. If you need a lift out of your current workout and don't' want a new gadget but concrete reasons to why weight training is important as we age then this is the book for you.

Not a serious book for real training application. Some might disagree with this statement. As a competitive athlete, veteran, strength coach, trainer, college professor with over 30 years experience I stand by my review.

Live longer and enjoy the process of your results with the opposite sex in the process. Unleash the animal inside you to become the Ape you where born to be. While keeping gentle and familiarity in the background of your brain. The book is an excellent reference in ways we can become are better selfs

Bravo Brett. Your book is amazing. Get Serious is packed with all the information you need to get healthy. The book is clear, concise, and in your face. It is the perfect "coffee table" health book.
A couple of my favorite chapters include Don't Forget Your Brain and Stop Blaming Your Genes. Dr. Osborn is very clear on what is causing health problems and how to correct them.
Of course, anyone in this good of shape can be trusted when it comes to exercise and physical activity. The book gets 5 stars just for that.
Brett was my classmate at Midwestern University and is now a practicing neurosurgeon. The guy is brilliant.
Trust him to recover your health. But only if you are serious about it.

I would strongly recommend this book for anyone who is serious about their health and wants to understand how exercise and nutrition affects the human body. Dr. Osborn explains how and why serious heavy resistance exercise has positive effects on one's health. I have been exercising vigorously for several years with some improvement but am now implementing his workout protocols as my exercise routine. Instead of wandering around the gym trying different equipment, I have a definitve plan to improve my health and strength. This book is written by a brain surgeon and he fully documents medically why his program works. Look at his photos: he is living what he writes.
Yes, the book is written by a brain surgeon but you don't have to be one to understand

Possibly one of the worst training/dietary books written. While Dr. Osborn may be a fine neurosurgeon, he's definitely not a prolific author. His premise is erred, his advice incomplete, outdated and even dangerous. In his attempt to be "cool" or "one of the guys" he uses profanity, making him sound much less intelligent that he probably is and puts him in the category of any gym rat with access to a word processor. This program may have worked for him, but for most people it would probably lead to severe over-training. He also fails to reveal that he has or continues to use performance enhancing substances, i.e., steroids. One cannot achieve a physique like his without them. It is physiologically impossible. There are much better guides to optimal health and fitness.

The most complete accumulation of knowledge about health and fitness that I've ever read. If you only ever read one more book, let this be the book. It will change your life if you apply the information.

Great book. Lots of information. Keeps things simple but additional information there if you really want to "geek out" too.
Really enjoyed this and have gone back and read chapters over again and still learning more.

When the cover shows a man who obviously uses steroids.
That isn't bad, by the way. In fact, it is the point. Anti-aging medicine is a euphemism for treating hormonal loss and imbalance with hormone supplementation.....gasp...with the roids!
The problem is twofold. One, all the nonsense that you will ever be able to do anything at all ever without the hormones...that is just flat out lies. Don't waste your time. Or maybe you should. After a year of hardcore workouts and ZERO to show for it, you might learn the most important lesson.
The other is not getting to the point.
What you need.....the right doctor. One with half a clue. I recommend someone who has been trained by a company called BodyLogic. What does the right doctor do....medical tests. And knows what they mean (something 99.9% of doctors do not despite having the books right up there on their shelf....gathering dust). Most supplements are worthless. Those that are not worthless are IMPORTANT. Your doctor must know which are which and which are needed by you. If you are a man, let's get to the point. The point are testosterone seeds injected in your ass, every three months or so.
Go back to the gym. See if your workouts are so unproductive now. By the way, you are not going to look anything like Osborn without massive abuse of steroids (not recommended) and a lot of airbrushing.
Six months in, it's time for the correct diet. This is something your average neurosurgeon dies from long before they learn enough to contribute much to their field. If you have a ripped six pack abs, guess what...your diet is very unhealthy. But you will leave a pretty, and young corpse. A woman with a similar body flat out stops menstruating. Both men and women like this are pretty....and sterile. This has been known and written about for a very long time. The ancient texts would say you are burning your body out. They aren't far from the truth.
What type of body do you want? Google George Atlas....that's what a healthy, superior powerful man looks like. Notice the distinct absence of freakishly large muscles. None of the strongest men in human history look other than like atlas. There are reasons for that.
