I loved this book. The plot was very interesting & the characters were extremely likable. I was very exited to discover that there were 3 more books in the series. I have finished them all & just wish there were more. I highly recommend this series.

An engaging, trickster antihero, a quest for a powerful talisman, and intrigue across kingdoms with deft pacing and a twist I didn't see coming. I'm way past my YA years, but I thoroughly enjoyed this tale.

Has a humorous tone that makes the read enjoyable in the moment, but I really have a problem when a story is told in the first person, and yet, there are out of nowhere, surprise revelations toward the end about that person that weren't foreshadowed at all. I know this book is part of a series, but taken on its own, it just doesn't stand alone as a good story. The first two thirds of the book are mostly a journey that gets a bit monotonous, then in the third act, we're introduced to hugely important characters and plot developments that we're barely foreshadowed.

It also has a problem of not really having a formidable villain. There are some stakes, as our traveling characters have to sneak through unfriendly territory, but there's no sense of menace in the story.

Gen is one of those unusual characters that stay with you long after the book is done. In addition to creating fantastic characters, the author creates a richly detailed world. After finishing The Thief, I quickly read all the other books in the series.

This book was very good, the characters were interesting. I will not give away the story, but I must warn those of you who may be tempted to skip ahead...RESIST the temptation. I speak from experience, I wish I had patiently waited for the end instead as the ending is suprising. However, when you do finish it, I highly recomend rereading it as it will give you the opportunity to see how everything really happened...

Not going to give anything away but there are some very well written twists to this tale. Loved it the first time and even more the second time. This is a Newberry award winning book but adults will enjoy it also. Well drawn characters and an interesting world.

A pretty good read, there were some things that felt slightly under developed and seemed to come out of nowhere but, all in all this book had my attention from start to finish and I wasn't disappointed or bored once.

A very interesting read, sometimes relaxing behind a fantasy book is all we need. The writing was ok, but the whole story by itself is not very original, and is filled with made-up mythology that takes a lot of cues from Greek and Roman ideas.
Recommended for an easy and fast read.

I came to this book while waiting patiently for the next installment of game of thrones. I always struggle with getting into new fantasy coming off of a great series I love, but with the reviews this book got I was excited to give it a try.

This book had a slow start and I struggled continue on but the last 20% of this book made everything worth it. I feel I should read it again to catch more details. And I definitely plan to - a good read - i would suggest it to others.

I checked this book out from the local library. I'm not sure what prompted me to try it (maybe it was on the "staff picks" table), but I'm glad I did.

While they're written for children and young adults, this grandma enjoyed the books so much that I bought the series (4 books). I only buy books that I know I'll read repeatedly (and/or encourage friends and family to read). When the grandkids are a little older, I'll definitely bring out this book when they visit.

Note: Book 3 is more for teens than children (IMO).

One other note: The book titles are spoilers, so try to read each book before looking up the next in the series.

This story is as almost as strange, exciting, scary, funny, and happy as life is.
There is nothing offensive in the book and my son has loved it since he was about 10. Nevertheless, adults who re-read it will enjoy it the most.

This book is a great story, well written, with fascinating characters, enormous suspense, a vivid setting and high stakes -- but what I enjoyed even more is that it makes you re-examine prejudices and preconceptions. A book in which the characters develop in their thinking and attitudes is a fine thing. One which makes you do that yourself is more than fine.

This has been one of my favorite books for years. I can't say how many times I've read it, no matter the number, every time is an enchanting experience that always leaves me wanting more. And thank the gods, there are more. Wonderful imagery, character development and a surprise ending that always makes me smile. Truly a great read.

I'm satisfied with the condition of the book. The plot, characters, and setting is great and you can't simply put the book down...Its my favorite book and I've read it more than five times. The book is appropriate for all ages to read (despite a few curse words).

This is an awesome book. For seventh to eighth graders that is. I chose this book for my summer reading project for my language arts class and I am so glad I picked it. This is a real page turner!!! :)
