This was the first Lord Peter Wimsey story I read and I truly enjoyed it enough that I went and bought a collection of 7 stories. I admit that I didn't much like Harriet Vane in this story though.

It is a good old story, clearly a little more modern than Holmes (more cars and telephones) being written later - in fact, Ms Sayers often references Holmes - as a fan of Sherlock, it made me smile. I think that if you enjoy Holmes and Christie, you will also like Sayers - though Lord Peter is more humorous than Holmes or Poirot and acts a bit like an upper class Columbo (TV character). His PTSD and war history with his butler, Bunter, also add an interesting dimension to the story though they are by no means a significant part of the narrative. I personally wish I hadn't accidentally started reading the preface and I would advise you to avoid it!

I love the 1930's, British Royalty, and mysteries. Dorothy Sayers used these ideas in her Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries. Lord Peter is a great detective, rich, an aristocrat and meets such interesting people. It's a great read.

Unlike the usual detective story & unlike the regular portrait of Lord Peter, all the usual conventions are turned upside down. The Almighty Lord Peter is losing some of his superiority as he falls in love and becomes human. The "dame in distress" is not willing to play the part of an obliging Cinderella. The book is funny and touching at the same time. I was sorry to finish it.
and Unnatural Death - Clouds of Witness :: Gaudy Night (Lord Peter Wimsey Mystery Book 12) :: Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane Investigate (Lord Peter Wimsey/Harriet Vane Mysteries Book 4) :: A Presumption of Death (Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane) :: Busman's Honeymoon (The Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane Mysteries)

I need to read more Dorothy L. Sayers mysteries. This was my first and I fell in love with Lord Peter and his friends. I'm not sure I've ever laughed out loud reading a mystery but this book was funny.

This is the first novel in which Harriet Vane appears with Lord Peter Wimsey. I enjoyed it. It was well written and well plotted. To learn the culmination of their relationship, read Gaudy Night next, even though Have His Carcase is actually next in the sequence.
