All of Keri Arthur books are excellent and a must read. I would start with the first book if you are starting this series about Riley. This book is intense in action and the romance between her and her reaper is nail bitting and keeps you reading faster. I loved this book and cant wait for the next one this summer.

When I first started reading this series, I was disappointed that it was with a "new" of characters with the prior series characters having a peripheral role. Now, though, can't wait for the next book in the series.

Keri Arthur has woven another compelling web of action, intrigue, mystery and suspense with Darkness Unmasked!

Being a chronic reader, it is my personal opinion that one of the highest compliments a book can receive is when it doesn't matter what you should be doing, you'd rather be reading. And an even greater testament to the utter captivating nature of the tale when that statement is turned to action, wherein everything in 'real life' is pushed aside for the opportunity to be totally immersed in the magic of the story. This series has done that to me 5 times over now - the outside world simply disappears when I have a DARK ANGELS book in hand, and I don't move until that last incredible page is turned...

This release is slightly darker and grittier than the previous installments. There's just as much action, but the violence is more intense, the villainy more sinister, and the emotions more raw. The romance is slightly different as well. It was simply written, leaving much to the imagination.

With the journey this series has taken it is almost impossible to write a plot driven review without spoilers, and because I don't do that, I will simply tell you that while a lot of series start to lag at the 5 book mark, somehow I feel like this thrill-ride is just getting started. There was a quote that about sums things up: Risa is at the climax of the story and is told, "Be careful, Risa Jones, there are more games being played than you realize." :). I'll also say that the twists that were introduced in this part of the story arc were diabolical in their brilliance & served to just further the emotional bond that Keri has been able to forge between her characters and the reader, as well as the characters themselves. No other books elicit the type of emotional response that these do for me; I always feel like I'm right there with them, and every single book has become a new favorite, leaving me emotionally spent and yet only wanting more.

Darkness Unmasked easily scored another 5 Skull rating from me. I highly recommend it, and the entire DARK ANGELS series - to everyone. These books have everything you want in a perfectly written Urban Fantasy - strong and well developed characters, superb world building, suspense and mystery with plenty of surprises, heart pumping action and intrigue, and just enough romance and witty dialogue to smooth out the edges.

I thoroughly enjoyed the fourth installment in Keri Arthur’s Dark Angels series. The fact that Risa’s in a race against time for most of this book definitely amps up the intensity level. Plus, her love life undergoes quite the upheaval; Lucian’s real motives are finally revealed (I never liked him) and Azriel throws caution into the wind (about time!). As a stand alone story this novel delivers on all fronts but as part of this series’ bigger picture it falls short. Again. For the second book in a row I’m left speculating where the main plot line went. I love these books and Keri Arthur’s writing but I’m beginning to wonder when the Dark Angel novels are going to get back on track.

As I mentioned, I enjoyed the story line of this installment because it forced me to think outside the box. The clues cross multiple plains of existence and as a result, Risa has no choice but to get a little creative in order to catch the killer. No stone is left unturned and no contact is left unexplored. Thanks to Arthur’s layer upon layer of cleverness, Darkness Hunts kept me guessing up until the very end. I was surprised to see Jak in this story. I’d originally thought that he’d served his purpose in Darkness Devours and that that was the last we were going to see of him. However, now I’m thinking he’s a replacement for Lucian in Risa’s love triangle after the Aedh showed his true colours.

Azriel has caused me endless amounts of frustration in this series and continued to do so for the greater part of Darkness Hunts. He’s been my pick for Risa since the get-go and after that jaw dropping ending I think that he may have finally seen the light. YES!! The reaper reveals quite a bit in this installment but there are still several unanswered questions. At least we’re making some progress! I hope this forward momentum continues because I am sick and tired of his indecisiveness. I don’t know how Risa puts up with it.

My biggest complaint with this novel is that it didn’t really further the keys / gates of hell story line. There is some mention of them which is something at least because they weren’t even a blip on the radar in Darkness Devours. Risa finally gets the clue she needs to start looking for the next key but this didn’t happen until the very end of the book. In my opinion, she should have gotten this lead in the previous book and spent this installment looking for it but that’s just me. Ooh, and one other thing, Risa is once again kidnapped and held underground where her reaper can’t track her. This has happened in every single installment so far. I think that it’s time to come up with some new material because this one’s getting rather redundant.

I’ve been a fan of Keri Arthur’s for years now; she’s one of my top three favourite authors and Darkness Hunts proves once again why she more than deserves her spot on my list. You can’t go wrong with the Dark Angels books; the pacing is relentless, the story is top notch and the ending will leave you begging for more.

Amaya is totally freaking awesome! What a cool demon sword! Yes, I have enough experience with demon swords to know when an amazing one is introduced. The connection Risa and Amaya have is awesome. And as the two get more acquainted I love it!! If the other “romances” were dropped and the story was about Amaya and Risa it would be perfect.

Sadly it's not. The truth about Lucian is out. It's just what I thought he was doing and I am so annoyed how unworried Risa seems. She's not worried that Lucian is spying, not really, it's that he physically attacks. Might even have accidently killed her when she confronts Lucian and doesn't fall into line. The only thing saving her was Azriel.

But don't get all chocked up that Azriel is standing up for his woman. Katy Perry's Hot'n Cold song is pretty much Azriel to a T, except he’s worse. And man is he on his Reaper menstrual cycle of mood swings. Firstly he seduced Risa in the last book. He opened that can of worms that Risa was fine to ignore. Now he's talking about all of these horrible things of what could happen by them being together, all these dangers. When he was the one that couldn't keep it in his pants.

Of course now that he broke through Risa's ignore barrier she can't say no any more. She has to have him. Despite all those dangerous reasons, and the huge fact that he's withholding information. Information that I know is going to seriously affect her. Probably information that is super important and will basically be a betrayal.

But she can't seek love/sex else where. No she doesn't do random casual, and if she did she could put that lover at risk. Not to mention that she was fine with Lucian screwing her for information, no really he was reading her mind. Oh, and all of the amazing characters that made the first book good still get benched. There's development but it's all behind the scenes. It's basically second hand information.

This book was too much. Riley's books were always a rush and somehow managed to combine the overall arc with the latest mystery/mission. Risa's books are not doing it. It's actually exhausting, and this time when Risa is pulled into a Directorate case it felt so sloppy. And I feel like Arthur is trying to take back her “gene” altering. You know Riley was experimented on and got tons of powers, well Risa was remade with more Aedh parts in the last book. Now I feel like Risa is too dumb to explore those new powers. Or . . .

I don't know. The romance feels super stupid. Especially since this, and the previous, book Riley's Ex has been back. It's three stupid male love interests in one go. Risa constantly talking about how she shouldn't be attracted but is. With Risa's involvement in this sloppy plot it feels like the search for the Keys and the impending terror of the gates of hell being opened/or closed forever don't seem like a real threat. I've hit a point of exhaustion with this series. Too much of the bad and not enough good. I really enjoy Risa's character. I love that she's got differences from Riley, enough anyway to feel like a different person. It feels like Arthur is trying to make the story so action packed that she forgot secondary characters are a good thing. That they are key to a story. Risa being unwilling to let people help her is passed as her protecting everyone. This is the most tiring book of the series. I'll keep going. But mainly because I want those cameos of the past faves. Oh, and Amaya.

Sexual Content: Wow, if there were sex scenes I can’t remember. I don’t think there were. Strange.

2/5- Average/disappointing, library check-out.

I've become really hooked on this series over the last few weeks so it'll be no surprise if I tell you that I absolutely devoured Darkness Hunts. Poor Risa seems to go from one fight for her life straight into the next one without a moment to even breathe let alone sleep or eat. Now she has managed to capture the attention of a murderer, one who is attacking his victims on the astral plane, somewhere that even Azriel can't help her so this time she really is on her own.

I absolutely love seeing how far Risa has come in this series, she has gone from strength to strength and although she makes mistakes she always comes back fighting. I think one of the things I love most about her is that she isn't invulnerable, she has impressive abilities but she still gets injured and she feels the after effects of a battle just like anyone else would. I can't even tell you how much I've been enjoying the relationship development between her and Azriel. I've been crazy about his character since the very beginning and desperately want to see the two of them work things out but it isn't easy for them when they are both so different. There are obviously deep feelings there though and I have high hopes that they'll work things out.

Another thing I'm really enjoying is seeing her connection with her sword Amaya, I have a feeling that this is only going to grow stronger with time and it will probably be the thing that saves Risa in the long run. I'm also glad we finally have some kind of resolution to things with Lucian. I've had a bad feeling about his character from the beginning and some of his actions in this book are despicable. I have to say the one thing that stopped this from being a five star read was Risa's reaction when she finds out what Lucian has been up to. I expected her to be outraged by the things he did and she seemed to take them far to calmly and in her stride. I would have been much happier if she had given him a piece of her mind and kicked him into touch.

Like all of the previous books Darkness Hunts has plenty of action, Risa is dealing with the aftermath of her attack by her father's enemies and at the same time trying to juggle the wishes of the vampire council and the Directorate who both need her help, she is having to keep secrets from the people she loves in the hope of protecting them from a madman all while she struggles to deal with her feelings for Azriel and the way he keeps blowing hot and cold with her. I just can't wait to see what happens in Darkness Unmasked!

Fifth in the Dark Angels urban fantasy melodrama series and revolving around Risa Jones, drama queen.

My Take
The usual melodrama and whining about she wants him, she can't have him, as she constantly pushes at him for more, Gimme, gimme, gimme. All this horrible stuff keeps happening. Oh, woe is me… *MAJOR eye roll*

(view spoiler) *Arm across the brow* It's all her fault.

Risa finally learns the truth of her mother's murder, sees the truly dark side of Hunter and Lucian, and well, her entire world simply falls apart. Mostly because she's such an impetuous, histrionic idiot, who isn't capable of stopping to think or consider the ramifications of anything.

Jesus, for all the excess of melodrama, which I think Arthur has intended as forcing the pace so we're caught up in all the action, she misses the boat of emotion. Especially in the sex scene between Lucian and Risa. There is such an opportunity for emotional upheaval, and we simply get the mechanics of it. It was more of a yeah, yeah, let me get this read so I can get on to the next bit.

On the plus side, we do make progress in the story. Some is positive — positively lethal anyway — and some is negative.

Blah, blah, blah…

The Story
Just a typical day in Risa Jones' life, a wake-up call from that bitch Madeline Hunter sending her out with a task. Only this case involves Hunter emotionally and it ramps up the threat-level from the leader of the Directorate of Other Races.

It cannot distract, however, from her main task: finding that second key lest more Gates of Hell be opened.

The Characters
The waffly Risa Jones is a wolf shifter and an orphan since her mother's murder, who carries the bloodthirsty sword, Amaya. We do learn she's terrified of spiders, and she has great roommates and business partners: Tao is another wolf shifter, who has been affected by a fire elemental, and Ilianna is a gay horse shifter, who's in love with Mirri. Carwyn is a stallion Ilianna's parents want her to hook up with; she hasn't come out to them yet. RYT is the name of the café that Risa, Ilianna, and Tao own.

Azriel is a Mijai, a reaper, assigned to follow Risa and aid her in finding, and then taking, the keys to prevent the Gates of Hell from being opened. His true name is Rephael. Valdis is his sword.

Madeline Hunter is a vampire in charge of the Directorate of Other Races as well as a leading member of the vampire council. It doesn't do to anger her. At all. And Risa was stupid enough to make that deal with her. Cazadors are the high council's elite killing force. Markel Sanchez is one of the Cazador vampires assigned to spy on Risa, one of their most dangerous. And it seems he enjoys his assignment. Nick Krogan and Janice Myer are others. Jack is Hunter's brother and in charge of the Guardian Division. Wolfgang Schmidt was a vampire and Hunter's lover.

Uncle Rhoan is a gay werewolf who works for the Guardian Division. His sister, Aunt Riley, another werewolf, is married to Quinn, a half-Aedh, half-vampire, and a former Cazador (their story is in the Riley Jenson, Guardian series, a MUCH better written series).

Stane is a computer geek friend of Risa's and Tao's cousin who can find anything and is being forced on a date. To be accompanied by both mothers, lol. Jak Talbott is a reporter who betrayed Risa, but he's angling to get back in her bed. Danny, Rachel, Jacques, and Frank are employees at RYT. Maggie is the lady at the desk of the storage space.

Lucian Dupont is Risa's former, and wingless, Aedh lover who put a spell on her to encourage her to sleep with him. Lauren McIntyre, a black sorcerer, is his current lover and partner. John Nadler is a faceshifter and possibly a sorcerer, but certainly the man behind the consortium trying to buy up land over a ley line intersection. Supposedly he's died. But Risa thinks he may be Genevieve Sands, one of the heirs listed in his will. The Jorōgumo are spider demons who entrap and lull their prey with lutes. Dark Soul is one of the music clubs while Hallowed Ground is another where Risa meets a rival of Hunter's: Harry Stanford, who makes Risa an offer. Classique Entertainers is a booking agency and James Parred is one of their agents. Jodie Summer and Di Shard are two of their performers.

The Brindle is the witch depository in Melbourne. Custodian Zaira is a witch horseshifter and Ilianna's mother. Kiandra is the leader of the Brindle and a very powerful witch with a terrifying message for Risa!

Aedh are energy beings who live on the gray fields while the Raziq are rogue Aedh priests who had created the keys and then lost them. Her father, Hieu, was one of them until he went renegade and arranged for the keys to be stolen. Now he requires that Risa find them. Or watch her friends die. Malin is in charge of the Raziq, and Hieu's former lover, who hates Risa for being the child of her father. She has altered Risa by inserting a device into her heart which notifies the Raziq when her father is around her. Razan are humans changed by the Raziq. Henry Mack, just one of his aliases, is also Mark Jackson, and a Razan.

Reapers, soul guides, are beings of energy who live on the gray fields, an area that divided earth from heaven and hell, a.k.a., the light and the dark portals. A Dušan looks like a tattoo, but is a protective shield on the gray fields. The Mijai are dark angels who hunt and kill the things that break free from hell. A Caomh is a life mate for a Reaper, someone who is in perfect harmony with his or her partner energy-wise.

The Cover
The cover seems a rainbow of green to orange of smoke to spiderwebs to a grate in the wall with a very cocky Risa off-center, her wings unfurled and sword in hand.

The title is all about Lucian, for his Darkness Unmasked. Both shocking and so very not.

For the most part, Risa Jones' mixed werewolf and Aedh heritage gives her a large advantage over most of her opponents. However, even her ability to see the dead and turn into a being of pure energy can't seem to help her stop a malicious killer that is preying on women. Even worse, he knows who she is, and has turned his attentions to ensnaring Risa into a nasty game of a race between life and death. Meanwhile she's still being targeted from all sides to find the keys to the gates, and even with the help of the Reaper Azriel at her side it may just prove to be an impossible task. Speaking of Azriel, the attraction between them is only growing stronger, but succumbing could lead to an unimaginable fate that neither of them wants.

I really love how these books not only follow a strong overall arc theme, but each one also has its own individual plot. This is my favorite type of series as it keeps things fresh by adding a whole new threat element with each installment, but it also strongly ties things together by adding developments to the overall series threat, this case being the Gate Key Quest. Although, these books take that intertwining aspect a step even further by not only having the in your face new threat, but also having several different factions going after the "prize", with Risa stuck right in the middle. There is just so much going on that there isn't a single opportunity to get bored, and that's my kind of book!

Not since Mac and Barrons from the Fever series have I been this strung out from the sexual tension between two characters. Sure, there have been plenty of other books where I really want the characters to "get together," but all of those pale in comparison to how I feel about Risa and Azriel. I had thought some of the unrelenting pressure would have been lessened due to them succumbing in the last installment. Unfortunately, it seems to only have brought things to an even higher fever pitch. I realize that this is a series, and Keri can't really have them get their happy ever after yet, but that doesn't mean I don't want to see some kind of promise or hope, or really anything at all between them other than this miserable stasis they are in. Granted, Risa seemed much more willing to give into her emotions, making me really feel for her as she was having a very hard time dealing with the distance forced upon them. I will say that even though Azriel's resistance and emotional armor only slips a few brief times, it is rather obvious that he is suffering from the distance as well. I just cannot wait until they both finally crack, because I think there will be some major fireworks flying. Hopefully that will be in the next book, otherwise I myself might just crack under the pressure.

Although the ending left me needing more, I absolutely loved this book! It really amazes me just how much further I get sucked into this series with each new installment released. The only problem with that high level of enjoyment is that it makes the wait between books even harder. That being said, I can easily see myself re-reading this series several times, as it has earned itself a solid place on my all time favorites list. Fans of this series, cannot possibly be disappointed in this latest installment as Darkness Hunts is an absolute thrilling ride from start to finish!

DARKNESS UNMASKED, the fifth book in the Dark Angels series, hits hard with the force of a Mack truck. Keri Arthur spares no emotions in this novel. There is a ton to keep readers happy and looking for more in this instalment.

Major changes happen to Risa that are startling and totally blindsided me. I didn't think Arthur would go through this route, but she did and wow, I was very surprised by the turn of events. After this, there is no way you can say Arthur is afraid of taking chances. As the tension between Risa and her lover Azriel bursts into flames, other major developments in terms of allocating the keys happen as well.

I don't think I was quite ready for the level of suspense in this novel. Arthur always has great action scenes but I really felt that the pacing and the suspense was taken up a notch, making this novel feel larger than life. If you're new to this series, I highly recommend reading the books in order. While Arthur does take the time to recap past events, it's always nice to experience them yourselves.

One of the things I love about this series and this book in particular is the fact that Risa, the heroine makes mistakes and has her vulnerabilities. As a UF heroine, she is tough and kicks some major ass, but this novel really showcased her feelings in a way that made her admirable. Suddenly, things are so out of hand that Risa must look into herself to determine the next course of action. For me, that's more interesting than someone who doesn't react at all to life-altering events.

Make no mistake, Keri Arthur has still got it! Thrilling action scenes, unsuspecting twists and a myriad of emotions make this novel one you have to read!

Beware of possible spoilers

I should probably begin this review with the admission that this is my first book in the Dark Angels Series (Darkness Unmasked is book five). I will say that although I came into this series blind, I was pleasantly surprised by not only its entertaining storyline but my ability to get up to speed on the action. Yes, there was a lot (and I do mean a lot) I didn't fully grasp immediately, but after a few chapters I was mostly into the swing of things. I really enjoyed Risa as a character. Ye,s she seemed to get in her own way when it came to love and honesty, but she was strong and determined and I couldn't help but admire her. Plus, she has some of the best inner dialogue I've read in a long time!

This series definitely had a strong, well developed plot that was both intriguing and entertaining. Like most books in this genre, this particular book had its own unique sub-plot, while a much larger plot continuing to develop in the background. There was a lot of backstory that I clearly had missed out on but that didn't minimize my enjoyment, if anything my interest was piqued as to what had occurred in previous books.

When it comes to the major plot development, I don't want to give too much away since this is an ongoing series. With that in mind, I will say that this book definitely hits warp speed about three-quarters of the way through and doesn't let up. Risa is happy and broken all at once and there are several major questions that get answered. The ending left us with a major cliffhanger that is sure to drive fans of this series crazy! A great deal of things happened that I didn't expect and there was a lot of painful moments that really showed the range of Keri Arthur as an author. There were a few things that could/should have gone down differently in my opinion, especially when it came to a very serious and devastating scene. I found myself laughing, blushing, getting irritated and cringing throughout this book. Any story that can pull that range of emotions out of the reader is definitely worth looking into!

My biggest complaint was in regards to the romance between Azriel and Risa, it just fell flat to me. Although they had chemistry (along with several sweet moments), there wasn't a big explosive come together. I guess my expectations were higher and overall I just wasn't impressed by the heat (or lack thereof). When these two characters (who are five books in the making) finally sleep together, I found myself thoroughly disappointed.

I had two major problems with how the author delivered this long awaited event: One, it wasn't like anything I had expected. Risa and Azriel "finally" sleep together, but it wasn't packed with intense heat or passion. They had "Reaper Sex" which was basically their energies coming together. Not a whole lot of heat for me as I was more focused on trying to understand what exactly Reaper sex involved more so than enjoying the act itself. Two, when they have actual sex we don't get to have any part in it. The author simply fades away from the scene. This is a huge pet peeve of mine with authors! Don't make us anticipate this moment for several books only to deny us a front row seat when it finally happens!

As a fan of romance I have certain expectations when two characters (who have long been in the making) finally come together. I didn't need some pornographic, long winded description but I was sorely disappointed by the love scenes in Darkness Unmasked. And don't even get me started on their emotional relationship! These two need to sit down and have some serious, open discussions. They are both hard headed, emotionally scarred individuals. But with that said, I was (and am) still rooting for them. Overall this book is absolutely worth the read and I would definitely recommend it. My advice? Start with book one! This way you can experience the entire journey as a whole.

**Review courtesy of All Things Urban Fantasy**

Keri Arthur's DARKNESS UNMASKED, the fifth book in the Dark Angels series, is a well written, thrilling urban fantasy, likely to be enjoyed most by readers already familiar with the series. A little confusing to those just jumping in, it was still a fun read, with sleuthing, sexy moments and lots of spiders!

I first want to caution those of you who may be arachnophobes- this book is not for you. The main villain of the book is a spider spirit, who happens to be a giant spider lying hundreds of tiny spider babies all over. I got the willies, and I'm not even particularly scared of spiders. It was very creative though, not like anything I'd ever heard before. Doesn't make it any less creepy, but it's always fun to encounter something new. In fact, DARKNESS UNMASKED never felt cliched or overdone. The world was original, and I wish we had seen a bit more of the werewolves and witches mentioned in the book description.

DARKNESS UNMASKED basically had two story arcs. I would liken it to a TV show in that there is the "mini mystery" within the episode, and then there is the bigger plot arc that encompasses the entire series. Since I was not familiar with the greater storyline of the Dark Angels series, it didn't make a ton of sense to me. For example, I kept getting the Razan and Raziq confused and I'm not entirely sure what either of them is to begin with, actually. This made it a bit hard to be really invested in the last quarter of the book, since once the spider spirit mystery was over, the book finished up with an event that was more relevant to the greater plot line of the series. It started getting hard to keep characters and all the details straight since I'm not familiar with the back story, but up until that point, it was a pretty good stand alone book.

Not being a fan of the series already, this wasn't the best read for me. However, I can see how those already acquainted with Risa would get really into it, and I enjoyed the glimpses I got at the other characters and into the world of the Dark Angels series. I'm curious enough that I would consider going back and starting the series with DARKNESS UNBOUND since DARKNESS UNMASKED was done so well.
