love this book, one of my favorite detective novels by my favorite detective writer hammett uses his own experience to really sell a story and this one just takes the cake

once you've read it seek out the film of the same name if you haven't already seen it

Sensational. Gritty, witty dialogue and indelible characters. Great twists and clever plotting. Fabulous vignettes into the very turbulent time of Roaring 20's USA. A must read of the detective / crime genre.

A great story fantastic characters, more developed in the book than in the movie in my opinion. The only problem was the kindle version I was reading had errors - grammar, spelling and gaps in the text.
A Philip Marlowe Novel by Benjamin Black (2015-03-02) :: A Philip Marlowe Novel (Philip Marlowe Series) - The Black-Eyed Blonde :: Overcome Resistance and Get Out of Your Own Way - Do the Work :: How Positive Thinking Is Undermining America :: The Lady in the Lake

The Holy Grail of detective stories. Immaculately crafted, terrific characters, an insidious and beautiful sense of location... if you want to understand the genre, read (and study, if you have the time) the Maltese Falcon.

This is a fast-paced read, with great plot twists throughout, keeping the reader intrigued. While it was set in a simpler time socially, the stereotype of the male detective as a lady's man and a player added an element of fun. If you like James Bond, then Sam's your man!

The classic hard nose detective, Sam Spade, shows his toughness in this cleverly crafted plot. Besides Spade, Hammett created enduring characters, including Fat Man, the homosexual Cairo, and the beautiful and vicious Bridgid O'Shaughnessy.

A lovely edition of the classic book made into an even more famous movie. Reading this it is clear no screenwriter was needed. The director is said to have just ripped pages from the books to give to the actors for their lines. Masterful prose.

Greatest movie ever made and now that I have read the book I know why. Wasn't sure if I would enjoy reading about the Falcon. I was pleasantly surpised. The book was as good as the movie. I love my Kindle!

I barely remember the movie, but the book was dramatic and of its genre. The characters seem almost cartoonish to me, but perhaps that was the style, the era. I'm looking forward to watching the movie again.

Very nice edition! The three novels speak for themselves, and the introduction is excellent, giving a lot of insight into Hammett's life and how he worked. As usual with Everyman's Library, the printing quality is excellent.
