Such a enjoyable book to read. A unique setting with a different take on magic and a sorcery world that is believable. I like the characters and how they interacted. Worthy of a few reads. I recommend Ursula Le Guin as superb writer.

Better than Harry Potter. Young readers may not like it as well as Harry Potter books because the level of writing is deeper, the characters have more maturity and depth. Not quite as exciting or fast-paced. LeGuin's books have a moral, ethical message which a more mature reader will appreciate. I had a hard time putting down the book once I started reading.

This has always been one of my favorties. Le Guin creates an independant world where magic is truly real. The characters are well written and believeable and the plot depth is excellent. There is enough action and adventure to satisfy everyone, yet Le Guin weaves an environment complex enough for hard-line fantasy fans. Don't forget the follow up books, The Tombs of Atuin and The Farthest Shore. If you love Tolkein, you will enjoy these too.
A Book about the Way and the Power of the Way - Tao Te Ching :: Parable of the Sower :: An Ambiguous Utopia (Hainish Cycle Book 5) - The Dispossessed :: All About Our Solar System (Cat in the Hat's Learning Library) :: Good Intentions

This was an original, inspiring story to read. It was encouraging and creative. It was an early sort of prototype of Harry P. (and perhaps others), without the violence (tho, without the humor as well). It was fun to read, with a well-paced narrative of adventure and fantasy. It was a grounded story with enough fantasy to provide escape and entertainment.
I really appreciated the deeper meaning underlying the tale (first in series), which was psychological/New Age in nature, and was personally relevant for me.
The writing was engaging and gentle, with likable characters and delightfully unpredictable.
Good for fastasy-wizard-Middle-Earth -type-fiction -lovers.

One of the best fantasy worlds created. Not on the level of detail or scope as Tolkien but very engaging. Difficult to put down. I read this as a young adult and now again an adult because the story was so entertaining.

We had dogeared paper backs of the first three books in LeGuin's Earthsea Cycle and had never read the later books in the series so this new printing is a wonderful opportunity to renew acquaintance with old favorites and complete the series. Plus it is durable enough to share with a host of new readers!

First a thank you to Margaret Atwood, who chose this book for the WSJ book club, that's how I learned of it.

I loved the story and have gone on to read the next books in the series. Somehow I missed this as a teenager and maybe that's better because now, as an adult and author I can appreciate her work much more. In fact, I recently wrote a blog post about it, which you can read here: http://bit.ly/1uBWyfm.

Ursula Le Guin is just, plain, marvelous to read. Her prose is beautiful, colorful and poetic. The Earthsea series is a wonderful look at an alternative world with multiple lead characters and the intersection of their lives. I've read them twice myself, once to my daughter, and have just bought the entire new paperback series and reading them again. Loving them as much as the first time.

I may be oversimplifying by saying there is no violence or sexual content, as there are marriages and earthquakes and a warring people in some of this series, but there is nothing I would make note of, and I'm picky about those things. I'd rather read a great story than be given a description of what others are doing in bed or on the battlefield. I've been reading Ursula Le Guin since "The EarthSea Trilogy" a very long time ago, when it was a tiny little paper back with the cover illustration of Ged in a small boat with a young woman seated on the bench and a "mage wind" billowing the sails. I love this expansion of EarthSea into six volumes and all the notes the author includes in describing her work since 1969. What a truly amazing woman! What a wondrous imagination. I recommend her work with all my heart.

Appealing to all ages sending you on a voyage, and adventure far from the realms of normalcy and reality yet bringing you to a place of simple distraction and completeness at the journey's end yet hinting of something more

This is a classic fantasy, complete with dragons, magic, and of course the proud and gifted wizard-in-training, Ged. Le Guin's style, which appeals to me more the older I become, is simple, spare, yet colorfully descriptive. It's amazing how much she can cram into a mere 182 pages. I lost a copy of this book when I was a teenager, and was very pleased to discover I could purchase a similar copy, with the original cover artwork, on the store.

Inspirational! While the Lord of the Rings is a longer and more detailed story, this is the book i'd take to the top of Meditation Mountain. Totally accessible by a YA audience, it has important messages for all of us.

A wonderful telling of a classic here's journey, this book builds a beautiful fantasy world. The author weaves into the story themes of good and evil, light and dark, without them being corny or heavy handed, like in so many other stories.

Started reading this series last summer just as something to do. I am sure that theses books are meant for a younger demographic but that did not stop me from taking something away from it. I would recommend anyone to read them and enjoy.
