This book is absolutely AMAZING!!! Honestly I can't wait to use it in the fall! I am reading it cover to cover to get an idea of what all is in here and have already added a bunch of sticky notes for ideas on how & when to teach the different strategies. Love how the book is organized and the example anchor charts are awesome!! This is going to be my go to resource next school year for guiding my small group and mini lessons! Thank you so much Jennifer for writing this book!!!!

This book has a comprehensive array of reading strategies. I appreciated the arrangement of strategies by reading component, which makes it an easy-to-use, go-to resource. I also really liked the author's arrangement of information within each strategy write up. The layout is appealing, too, and adds to the book's ease of use.

Excellent book. Not the kind of book that you read from cover to cover, but indexed very well so you can find the strategy that you need relatively quickly. Even though I have been a teacher for years, there were still lots of new ideas.

Seriously. If you teach, this book is amazing! It's easy to use and geared towards a vast array of reading levels. My school bought one for me to read as a book study. It is a blessing to educator who wants to improve his/her practice.

If you teach reading, you NEED to have this book! This is not a "read it cover to cover" book, but an essential tool to keep handy whenever you are planning. It has chapter after chapter organized beautifully and full of lessons that are ready to roll with: suggested reading levels for that skill, suggestions for the type of book to use, sample anchor charts, and question stems. This is well worth the price tag, and I won't show up to team planning without my copy.

Jennifer Serravallo is an amazing teacher and author! I've attended many of her professional development sessions, and she is truly an expert in her field. She takes main reading skills and matches appropriate strategies in an easy to use manner. She helps teachers figure out how to teach kids to transfer reading skills for independence.
The organization and visuals in her book make it so easy to use in a real classroom setting. I often find myself knowing what skill to teach, but struggling for HOW to teach it depending on the student's grade level and/or reading level. Her book provides tried and true strategies that are detailed, yet simplified enough for on-the-spot classroom use.
The charts and artifacts pictured, information in the margins, and brief text on each page make this book the solution that all reading teachers have been looking for.
Thank you so much for your book!

This book is a must have for all literacy teachers and literacy leaders!! Jennifer shares her thinking in concise, clear, incredibly organized, and thoughtful ways. The visuals that accompany each strategy in this book truly help to give a solid foundation for me to teach mini-lessons to either small or whole groups. Each strategy is listed with teacher prompts, anchor chart examples, level suggestions, resources and MORE! Each section is beautifully laid out and organized so that the reader can identify where the strategy lies in the continuum of literacy skills. There is even a section that lays out the hierarchy of goals so that you can address each skill with a variety of strategies to deepen that skill for students. Jennifer lays out the structure of how to meet your reader's needs so thoughtfully and I highly encourage you to attend her workshops! This book is also such an incredible follow up to her other books like The Literacy Teacher's Playbook. I will not be without this resource in my classroom in the future!! Don't miss out!

As a literacy specialist, I was a little leery to purchase this book thinking that everything I needed was in my college textbooks. I LOVE the strategies & the way they are organized in this book. This will definitely be a go-to book for all reading issues in my classroom!

This book is amazing! If you are an elementary educator who teaches reading, you need this book! It is one of those books that will not just 'sit on the shelf,' but will instead be torn and tattered from constant use!!! A true gem for those of us who teach reading.

WOW! Thank you Jennifer Serravallo for writing such a visual and purposeful reading instruction manual for teachers! I read LOADS of textbooks on reading instruction and this is by far one of the easiest to use and yet most comprehensive ones I have encountered. Could not recommend it more!

This book by Jennifer Serravallo is perfect for anyone who teaches reading, from classroom teachers to literacy coaches to interventionists, student teachers to tutors. It is packed with explicit, easy-to-follow reading strategies, organized into 13 reading goals. These strategies will help readers develop skills they need to read, comprehend, analyze, and discuss both fiction and non-fiction. Each page contains a teaching point, possible trajectories for strategy instruction, prompts, tips, examples of charts to use, and guidance for which readers will benefit most from the identified strategy. Not a book you will read and leave on your shelf, Serravallo provides teachers with a "cookbook" for their instruction. I found myself thinking of particular students or groups of students as I perused its pages with tabs and highlighter in hand. It filled me with anticipation for the new school year!
Depending on the readers you work with, you will find yourself drawn to different reading goals, whether it be reading engagement, fluency, fiction comprehension (plot, setting, characters, theme), nonfiction comprehension (text features, main ideas, details), speaking and listening, writing about reading, vocabulary and figurative language, and more. This isn't a book you have to read from cover to cover; the easy-to-use table of contents invites you to target specific goals and find the strategies that are just-right for your readers. Concise, student-friendly, and purposeful, the teaching points and instruction framework are ready to put into practice immediately. You will keep this book at your fingertips as you move through the year.
Once again, Jennifer Serravallo delivers a text that will benefit all who encounter its pages, and I highly recommend this "everything guide" for anyone who teaches reading!
